00:01Previously on Project Runway...
00:03Welcome to Lincoln Center,
00:05the new home of New York Fashion Week.
00:07Whoo!
00:08Your first challenge,
00:09it's actually the last phase of the audition process.
00:12To only have five hours was like, ah!
00:19Is the transformation putting the kimono on backwards?
00:22It could be because of time restrictions.
00:24Is it sexy or is it vulgar?
00:26It's insanity.
00:30It looks very hick outfit night at the bar.
00:33She's a pole dancer in Dubai.
00:36I think it is quite ugly.
00:38The styling, it's a train wreck.
00:40For this challenge, we had a rare unanimous decision.
00:43Gretchen, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:46Congratulations.
00:47Mikael, I'm sorry, you're out.
00:50Moving into Atlas is so surreal.
00:52We made you here.
00:53Okay, so now I'm finally on the show.
00:55Like, what's next?
00:56This is Project Runway.
00:58Yes!
00:59Let's go!
01:00The search for the next big fashion designer.
01:02I was born ready.
01:04You know you love this.
01:06You're either in or you're out.
01:08It's about fashion.
01:09Who will be the next great fashion designer?
01:11I'm the best there is.
01:12Seventeen designers.
01:14Better watch your ass.
01:15Three finalists.
01:16But only one can be the winner.
01:18It's Fashion Week or go home.
01:20I've come way too far to lose.
01:22For these seventeen designers, Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.
01:27The winner of Project Runway will receive $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to start their own line.
01:32A fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
01:34$50,000 technology suite from HP and Intel to create their vision and run their business.
01:39And the opportunity to design and sell an exclusive collection on PiperLime.com.
01:44The model paired with the winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
01:48And $25,000 from L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional.
01:52Good morning ladies.
01:57Wake up.
01:59Oh.
02:04So I wake up this morning and I am dead.
02:07Like literally dead.
02:08Like take my pulse it's not there zombie sort of thing.
02:10I'm pretty sure this show is not about fashion design.
02:13It's about public torture of designers on television.
02:18Moving into Atlas was such a good experience because it meant that I made it.
02:21It meant that I was in it and we're ready to go.
02:24Just blow this door.
02:25The hell how to wait?
02:27Yeah.
02:28I don't want to waste any time.
02:40Hello everybody.
02:41Hi.
02:42Congratulations.
02:43You made it through the final audition of Project Runway.
02:46And you are officially on the show.
02:51Furthermore, you should all be very proud of what you achieved in the last challenge.
02:55Especially given the time frame.
02:58We're thrilled to have Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire magazine with us today.
03:04She's going to tell you all about your next challenge.
03:07For this challenge, Marie Claire wants you to design a look that tells the audience in a single brief glance who the Marie Claire woman is.
03:15She's intelligent, she's practical, she's fashion-forward, confident and sexy.
03:21The winner of this challenge will have their look featured in the Marie Claire billboard campaign running in New York's Times Square.
03:29That is super exciting.
03:30I mean that is huge.
03:31Wow.
03:32It's like it's on a billboard unless you're like a Calvin Klein model or you too.
03:39It's going to appear 40 feet tall so bad workmanship will show up and the billboard image will be photographed by one of the hottest fashion photographers around, James Macari, who shoots Victoria's Secret campaign and does many fashion shoots for Marie Claire.
03:54You have one day for this challenge which compared to what you just went through is a luxury.
03:59Say goodbye to Heidi and Joanna.
04:01We're headed off to the work room at Parsons.
04:03Come with me.
04:04Good luck.
04:05Bye everybody.
04:06I see you on the runway.
04:16All right designers, you have 30 minutes to sketch.
04:19All right?
04:20All right.
04:21And I will return.
04:23Work hard.
04:26So what I decided to do is something that I haven't done yet and I threw myself a curveball and decided to do pants.
04:34It's all about shape and it's going to be very Marie Claire.
04:40My design is the infinity dress.
04:42It was a concept I had in my mind for a long time.
04:45It also represents an eight for Project Runway season eight.
04:48I like this idea because infinity is a very positive sign.
04:51People get anxiety and fear when they think about death and infinity is just, you know, it's forever.
04:56What's better than infinity?
04:59Designers, sketching time is up.
05:02Bring with you whatever you need for our shopping exposition at Mood.
05:11It's our first trip to Mood.
05:12Very exciting.
05:13You have your $150 budget.
05:15All right?
05:16You have 30 minutes beginning now.
05:23What I'm looking for is a cotton, Tweety, houndstoothy kind of thing.
05:28Isn't there one more laying down here?
05:30All they have is wool.
05:32And I grab this polka dotted stuff and this brown dupioni and it's bad.
05:39Oh my God.
05:41You have five minutes.
05:43Okay, everybody.
05:47That's it.
05:48Time.
05:49Thank you, Mood.
05:51We'll be back.
05:55All right, designers.
06:03You have until midnight tonight.
06:06So plan on finishing tonight.
06:08And if you have some tweaking to do, you can do that in the morning.
06:14The back shoulder, it should be more up to the front than the front to the back.
06:22Are you asking me?
06:23Yes.
06:24If I, what do I think?
06:26Like this.
06:27Like this.
06:30I mean, no offense.
06:31I'm not going to help you pattern.
06:34Sorry.
06:35I'm sorry.
06:36That's okay.
06:37I'm just not.
06:38I don't know what happened with AJ.
06:40I just asked simple question.
06:42I think he's very into the competition.
06:45I respect that.
06:46Most of the designer, they share the stuff.
06:49They learn.
06:50They make opinion.
06:51I don't, I don't take it personal.
06:53Is this the way he is?
06:55I'm cool.
06:56I'm not going to sew it for you.
06:59Coming up on Project Runway.
07:01What's this?
07:02I think it looks cheap.
07:03They look discordant.
07:05I really don't care about what the other people think.
07:07They don't really interest me.
07:08I'm just baffled.
07:09How is everybody?
07:10Valerie.
07:11Hi, Tim.
07:12I'd love to hear what you're doing.
07:13I was thinking of a classic trench coat dress, but I'm having the skirt be fitted.
07:27I have to say I really respond positively to that.
07:30I think Valerie's work is really incredible.
07:32Where's your zipper?
07:33And I think she's my top competition.
07:36Does it look too brassy?
07:37Yeah.
07:38For me, I think it looks cheap.
07:39Really?
07:40Oh, gosh, Tim, that's a kiss of death.
07:42See?
07:43It is.
07:44So keep it clean.
07:45Okay, I'll keep it clean.
07:46Go, go, go.
07:47Work, work, work.
07:48Okay, I will.
07:49I'm going to cut away and get to sewing.
07:50Jason, gorgeous colors.
07:52Love your palette.
07:53It's going to come down like this, like an eight.
07:56So it's two sides of an eight.
07:59Yeah.
08:00Overlapping each other.
08:01Yeah.
08:02Like a wrap?
08:03Yeah, kind of.
08:04Like it's an infinity dress, like eight.
08:07Like for season eight, Project Runway.
08:10Jason's mysterious.
08:11And he has like the bowler hat all clockwork orange, you know?
08:14But as a designer, I am not a huge fan.
08:17What are those doing?
08:19Like alien, like croppings.
08:21All right, but I'm concerned about you.
08:23I'm going to tell you right now.
08:25Okay.
08:26All right, Jason.
08:28Everything's stacked against me.
08:29I'm a straight guy, a gay man's world, and I'm just trying my best here.
08:32I mean, what the ?
08:33It's like, don't be so hard on me, man.
08:35First of all, congratulations on being the first designer to make the Wall of Fame.
08:41So now you have a tough act to follow.
08:43I know.
08:44I think that Gretchen's talented, but the thing about Gretchen is she's not creative.
08:50And have you started the top?
08:51I know I can bang the top out.
08:53All right.
08:54It's been four hours.
08:55I know.
08:56Okay, Gretchen.
08:57Okay.
08:58Go, go, go.
09:01Nicholas, talk to me.
09:02What I want to do with this challenge is, number one, how much I can accomplish, and
09:06also how innovative I can be.
09:07Excellent.
09:08The back is my favorite.
09:09I think it's beautiful.
09:10Mm-hmm.
09:11The top that Nicholas made has a striking similarity in the back to what I made yesterday.
09:21And I know that he thinks he made a lovely dress, but he ripped me off.
09:26What's this?
09:27It's this concept of a complete circle.
09:29And I'm able to drape it into, like, this form.
09:32I'm ambivalent.
09:34Only because I think that there's a sexiness to this.
09:37Yeah.
09:38Whereas this, I mean, does she become Little Red Riding Hood?
09:43Keep working.
09:44Thank you, Tim.
09:45Thank you, Nicholas.
09:46How is peach?
09:47Lost.
09:48Absolutely lost.
09:50This and this?
09:51They look discordant.
09:52It seems like I need to start over with something.
09:55Now, do I start over with the skirt, or do I start over with the top?
09:58It's about what you would do and still stay true to who you are as a designer.
10:01The textile alone stays true to who you are as a designer.
10:03Oh, good God.
10:04It was screaming at me from the, you know, wall.
10:06Yeah, see?
10:07Just calling your name.
10:08Go, go, go.
10:09All right, I'm starting over.
10:10What do you say?
10:11What do you say?
10:12The skirt is a disaster.
10:14Ooh.
10:15So, plan B.
10:16Do you think this is chic?
10:19I like the front.
10:20And you don't like the back?
10:21You need to finish that.
10:22How are you holding up?
10:23Me?
10:24I don't know.
10:25I just hope I get done, man, you know?
10:27Designers, as you all know, you're each creating a design that you hope will be photographed,
10:34blown up, and placed on a billboard in New York City.
10:38Needless to say, this reward is huge.
10:41So, with this in mind, there is another element to this challenge.
10:46You know, it's going to be like, make another dress out of your scraps.
10:51Oh, crap.
10:53Coming up on Project Finally.
10:55Gretchen, what do you think with that belt?
10:57What about Mom?
10:58He's having some.
10:59Where is he?
11:00I feel like this gift and talent occurs to me sometimes.
11:09There is another element to this challenge.
11:13Tomorrow morning, you will each have a photo shoot with a Marie Claire photographer.
11:18Each of you.
11:19Yes!
11:20You will work with the photographer and your model to capture the image that you believe
11:27best represents your look and the Marie Claire woman.
11:31Furthermore, your judges will consider the image that you capture along with your runway presentation
11:37when scoring your designs.
11:39So, use the time between now and midnight very thoughtfully and very strategically.
11:43And I am sending in your models soon.
11:46Hi!
11:49I need to do something different, like...
11:56Yeah.
11:57That would be good.
11:58That would be good-er.
12:02I like with the belt.
12:03I like it.
12:04Uh, Gretchen, what do you think with that belt?
12:09No?
12:10I like with the belt.
12:15Casanova could be incredibly annoying if he wasn't so charming.
12:20I need your advice.
12:23That is not happening.
12:25By the time the clock hits midnight, I am completely defeated.
12:29I was a maniac all day.
12:31And it's done.
12:32But I've got something on the dress form.
12:35And I have decided I'm going to get a little sleep and map out a plan to at least send something
12:42down the runway tomorrow.
12:51You know, it is what it is.
12:52I have had the best time.
12:53This has been so surreal for somebody like me.
12:56Stop talking about it like you're gonna leave.
12:58Stop.
12:59My only hope is that they take more Samuel.
13:01Maybe.
13:05What about Mondo?
13:06He's having some.
13:07You don't want.
13:08Where is he?
13:09I'm really lonely.
13:10And I need to connect with somebody.
13:13And there hasn't been a connection with anybody, to tell you the truth.
13:19And, uh, I keep so many thoughts in my own head.
13:22And they're starting to eat me up.
13:25I hope Mondo has earplugs, dude.
13:28We'll see him tomorrow.
13:29Right.
13:30But are you guys...
13:31I feel like I've never been loved for just who I am and what I can give back.
13:36It's just always what I can create.
13:38As an artist, I feel like this gift and talent is a curse to me sometimes.
13:44Congratulations on everything else.
13:46Thanks.
13:47Live.
13:48Cheers.
13:49Coming up on Project Runway.
13:50Wing it.
13:51Yeah.
13:52Looks like she's got stomachache.
13:53The photo shoot is a little intimidating.
13:54It's feeling a bit weird to me.
13:55What did you tell her to do?
13:56Ah!
13:57Lighten it up a bit.
13:58So what do you think about finishing and then going to the runway?
14:13I just hope we'll have enough time to finish.
14:15Clearly, I don't think I'm going home.
14:17My bed looks like a disaster.
14:18I've moved it.
14:19I'm not ready to go home, but I'm not ready for the runway either.
14:23Yesterday was such a stressful day.
14:25Coming into this, I always told myself that I would roll with the punches.
14:29This morning when I woke up, it was a clean slate and I'm going to continue to do my best and stay true to myself.
14:35Come on, you guys.
14:36Let's go.
14:37Here we come, Parsons.
14:38Here we come.
14:45Good morning, designers.
14:47Good morning.
14:48How is everyone?
14:49Great.
14:50You should be great.
14:51I am about to send in your models.
14:53You will have two hours to send them to the L'Oreal Paris makeup room and the Garnier hair salon.
14:58Remember, this is the Marie Claire photo shoot.
15:01Woo!
15:02This is your opportunity to show the judges an enhanced view of what they see on the runway.
15:07Think about that when you're using the Piper Lime accessory wall.
15:10It's about attitude.
15:12It's about your point of view as a designer.
15:14It's about the attitude of the whole look.
15:16All right?
15:17Editorial, everyone.
15:19Got it?
15:20Okay.
15:21I think maybe the bangles are a bit much, dude.
15:25I think so.
15:26Yeah, because she's already looking a little punk, you know?
15:28And it's Marie Claire.
15:30Hello.
15:31Hi.
15:32Hi, tell me.
15:33Hi, so this is the dress.
15:34Gorgeous.
15:35Since the dress is pretty strong and bold, neutral lip, maybe a little matte.
15:40Maybe just darken the eyebrows so that they're, like, strong.
15:46So what are we doing?
15:47So I want to do, like, a fishtail up in the back, and then I want to do a bun on top of her head about the same area where mine is.
16:00We have, what, five minutes?
16:02The only redeeming thing I have right now is the fact that, you know, Ify is covered.
16:07And covered is good, but she's covered with Barbie's sofa.
16:13Designers and models, time is up.
16:17You're going to the photo shoot.
16:19So follow me.
16:21The doll face.
16:22The doll face.
16:28Okay, Jay's dress is ridiculous.
16:30Yeah.
16:32It's not perfect.
16:33What does this piece do?
16:34Is it a pocket?
16:35Oh.
16:36It's the infinity.
16:37It's the eight.
16:38If you look at the dress, it's an eight.
16:39I see it.
16:40Yeah.
16:41Jason's kind of creepy.
16:42So you never know if he's going to come behind you with the scissors and just, like, boom.
16:46I try to be friends with him.
16:47I'm like, yeah, I love what you're doing.
16:49Oh, I get the whole infinity thing.
16:51Yeah.
16:52It's a part of my process.
16:53It looks like the infinity symbol.
16:55It's the infinity symbol.
16:56Come on in.
17:06Hi, AJ.
17:07Hi.
17:08I'm Zanna from Marie Claire.
17:09Zanna, nice to meet you.
17:10Nice to see you.
17:11How are you?
17:12Our photographer.
17:13How are you?
17:14Obviously, feel free to direct.
17:15Yeah.
17:16Make it work.
17:17Great.
17:19It seems like her hands are coming a little close together almost.
17:21It's like she's got stomachache.
17:22Maybe, like, with one leg up or something.
17:24I'm feeling really confident and comfortable.
17:26Now I'm just nervous of capturing the right shot.
17:29You can see the silhouette in her side and the back of it.
17:32I'm going with 173.
17:33Tell me a little bit about this dress.
17:35It could be styled in so many different ways, and that's why I have the user-friendly safety pins.
17:40It's not working.
17:41It looks like a mistake or a hole in the dress.
17:44Jason's dress didn't really make a lot of sense to me.
17:48The entire look seemed so far away from Marie Claire.
17:51What kind of, like, feeling are we trying to get here?
17:53Tough.
17:54Okay.
17:55Marie Claire isn't so much of a tough magazine.
17:57It's feeling a bit weird to me.
17:59Absolutely, yeah.
18:00Lighten it up a bit.
18:04Let's see what you think.
18:06I'm liking this.
18:07This one.
18:08So, Jason, 307.
18:11Any tiny floor is magnified by hundreds on a screen like that, but then imagine it being on a billboard as well.
18:18It's just, like, glaring.
18:20The judges have to look past these little closures because I'm not prototype Jack.
18:25I can't pop things out.
18:26It's emotionally draining and physically draining.
18:29Coming up on Project Runway.
18:30Is that a walk of shame dress?
18:31Desperate housewives.
18:32Ugh.
18:33What are you doing now?
18:34Are you showing us her underwear?
18:35Welcome to the runway.
18:36As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day, you're out.
18:42There are 16 of you here, and after tonight, there will be 15.
18:46Or less.
18:47Your challenge was to create a look that defines the Marie Claire woman.
18:51The winning look will be featured on a billboard campaign in New York's Times Square.
18:56You also had the opportunity to work with your model on a photo shoot.
18:57And since this challenge has such a big payoff, no one will receive immunity.
19:03You had $150 and $1.50.
19:06You had $150 and $1.50.
19:09You had $150 and $1.50.
19:12You had $150 and $1.50.
19:15You had $150.
19:18You had $150 and $1.50.
19:25And one day to put it together.
19:27All right.
19:28Let's meet the judges.
19:29First, we have CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Michael Kors.
19:33Hey, guys.
19:34Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
19:37Hi, everyone.
19:38And our guest judge today, editor-in-chief for Marie Claire Magazine, Joanna Coles.
19:43Hi, everyone.
19:44Hi, Joanna.
19:45We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
19:48And we will also take your photos into account.
19:51One of you will be named the winner.
19:53And one of you will be out.
19:56All right.
19:57Let's start the show.
20:00I am so confident in this look right now.
20:07I think she looks amazing.
20:09And she pulls off the cloak, and it's like, bam, there's the look.
20:16But I noticed that, you know, the judges don't really look as impressed as I look.
20:24I'm really happy with how my piece turned out.
20:27I think it's so beautiful.
20:31I definitely think they're going to see that I know what I'm doing.
20:35I think I stumbled upon something.
20:50It was impeccable the way it was sewn.
20:54She looks really badass.
20:57She's rocking out the look.
20:59I'm happy with what I've created.
21:13I love the whole look together.
21:17I think it's working.
21:18I think the judges are going to like it.
21:20And I feel confident about it.
21:22When I see my dress put on the runway, my immediate thought is that it looks like Amare was impregnated by some weird alien creature.
21:37And it really, really worries me.
21:47Two hours ago, I was done.
21:49I was standing there with a naked model.
21:51Right now, I'm very pleased with what I made.
21:54A tailored to perfection little dress.
21:57I'm thinking I can hold my own here for a while.
22:09When I see my dress, I think I'm going to die because I just can't believe it is so short.
22:16It should be a wrap video.
22:19I'm just going to use my poker face.
22:21I'm not going to have any expression because I know Nina is watching me right now.
22:33I'm happy with the entire look.
22:36However, in the back of my mind, I'm still thinking you just never know who could get sent home no matter how good you think you are.
22:42Everything always translates differently on the runway.
22:53And my dress on the runway really looks fantastic.
22:55I mean, I really like my dress on the model and in person.
22:59But on the runway, it's a magnified times ten.
23:01It just beams.
23:08I felt pretty confident.
23:13The main thing that I worry about as far as the judges are concerned was my color choices.
23:20I feel like it came across pretty well on the runway.
23:35I am looking at the judges' faces.
23:37They're hard to read, but I feel really good.
23:39I feel really confident that I could be in the top three on this challenge.
23:43When she does her little fanning out of the sleeves, that was so fun.
23:47And I think it was really interesting for the judges to see because I don't think they were expecting it.
23:52And I think that's what will keep me in the top, is being unexpected and being interesting.
23:58I think my model looks awesome.
24:10Stunning on the runway.
24:12Like the sleeve, amazing.
24:14She handled like everything very nice.
24:17But I'm a little bit concerned about the color of the top.
24:23I really don't like navy.
24:25I don't know why I decide that disturbing color.
24:39At first, I was nervous about the fit on my model,
24:42because I could not work that fabric the way I wanted to work it.
24:45But when she walked down that runway, she sold it.
25:03I felt so good looking at my piece coming down the runway.
25:08Alessandra is my dream girl.
25:10And seeing how the styling all came together.
25:15And getting to look over at the judges and how they were looking at it, it was like magic.
25:22When I see the dress walk down the runway, I wasn't as nervous.
25:33I see my skirt as this fun, flirty garment.
25:37And Ian is doing a great job walking down the runway and showing the judges the bounce and the energy that it has.
25:42As I watch my garment go down the runway on Milana, I think that it looks great.
25:49I'm super confident.
25:51And it's really who I am as a designer, but still keeping the challenge into consideration.
25:58Overall, I'm not worried.
25:59There's definitely a few people that deserve to be in the bottom tonight, and it's definitely not me.
26:05If I call your name, please step forward.
26:12Mondo.
26:13Peach.
26:14Nicolas, please step forward.
26:15Jason.
26:16Valerie.
26:17Valerie.
26:18Gretchen.
26:19If I have not called your name, congratulations.
26:20There's definitely a few people that deserve to be in the bottom tonight, and it's definitely not me.
26:24If I call your name, please step forward.
26:29Mondo.
26:30Peach.
26:31Nicolas.
26:32Please step forward.
26:33Jason.
26:34Valerie.
26:35Gretchen.
26:36If I have not called your name, congratulations.
26:38Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
26:39You can leave the runway.
26:41The rest of you represent the highest, and the lowest of your goals are the highest.
26:44One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
26:45Okay, let's bring out your models.
26:46Peach.
26:47Peach.
26:48Peach, tell us about your
26:58life.
27:00Peach.
27:01The rest of you represent the highest, and the lowest scores.
27:02One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
27:05Okay, let's bring out your models.
27:08Peach, tell us about your life.
27:15Peach, tell us about your look.
27:16I think polka dots are youthful and happy,
27:19and I was thinking polka dots for the billboard
27:22because I thought it would be eye-catching.
27:23When I think about Marie Claire,
27:25I think about a woman that is strong,
27:27powerful, fashion-forward, hip.
27:30When I look at this, I don't see any of those things.
27:33This looks like ladies at lunch.
27:36There is no sex appeal.
27:37It's like an Amish cocktail dress.
27:41Oh, no.
27:41Very matronly, very cliche.
27:45Valerie, tell us about your look.
27:46I was very inspired by the Marie Claire woman,
27:49and I wanted to really embody
27:50the spirit of New York as well.
27:52So I wanted to create something that was innovative,
27:55but still simple and elegant,
27:57kind of Carrie Bradshaw meets Samantha Jones.
28:01I think it will be beautiful in the picture.
28:02There's enough detail to make it interesting.
28:05It's sexy, yet conservative, which is hard to do.
28:09The collar is very beautiful,
28:10and it will frame a shot very nicely.
28:14Jason.
28:15I wanted to make a look that transcended from night to day,
28:18and what I started with was infinity.
28:21It's an eight here.
28:22And I think it's edgy and youthful,
28:24and I'm really happy with it.
28:26I don't know how interesting this would be on a billboard.
28:30Are the closures safety pins?
28:33Yes.
28:34And that was intentional, obviously.
28:35That was intentional.
28:36I don't think that the Marie Claire girl
28:39would wear it for day or night.
28:41At night, she would feel like she was wearing a satin bedspread.
28:46For day, everyone in the office would say, is that a walk of shame dress?
28:51Did you just come in?
28:53I think she looks furious that she's being put up in Times Square, and I can't believe that you would pick a photo where it's very clear that the hole in the middle is not supposed to be there.
29:04We can't see it now, so it's clearly not part of the design.
29:06After you even heard of all of that, do you still think that this is Marie Claire?
29:12I think it's me for Marie Claire.
29:13If I had the snaps and everything, all different ways that you'd be able to wear this.
29:18What are you doing now?
29:19Are you showing us her underwear?
29:20No, no.
29:21I'm showing you what could be done, what options could be done with this.
29:24But that's the problem.
29:25It's like how it should have, could have, would have been that we can't see, you know?
29:29I understand.
29:30Gretchen, tell us about your look.
29:32I felt like it was really important to create something that would fill the page, because it's a billboard, it's advertising.
29:40A woman that's as young as 22 would want to be this woman, as well as somebody way into their 40s and 50s.
29:49I'm not sure if you guys noticed my day to evening look.
29:54She looks like a cool girl.
29:56I also love this photo.
29:57It's really simple, sophisticated.
29:59And I love that you can open the front and kind of reveal a little bit more, if you like.
30:06The Marie Claire woman is smart, she's confident, she's modern, and she likes to have fun.
30:11These are all things that I get out of this outfit.
30:15Okay, Nicholas.
30:16The idea was to take this 27-inch diameter circle and create, like, this really nice shape around her.
30:24There's too many details, the seams of the skirt, plus the cape, then the asymmetry of the blouse.
30:30This is a billboard.
30:32It's supposed to be arresting, simple, but beautiful.
30:36This is very complicated.
30:38You do not really think about the big picture, and I mean literally the big picture of this challenge.
30:43Maybe we should just get rid of this cape for a second and have a look at what was pretty.
30:48With the blouse, you did a nice job.
30:49Can we see the back?
30:50Oof.
30:52The back without the cape is a little bit strange, yeah.
30:55It was my idea of, like, the daytime to, like, evening.
30:58So she has to wear the cape all day?
31:01I guess not all day.
31:02That's a rough one.
31:04Because she takes the cape off, she's naked.
31:07And if she keeps the cape on, she might be joining a religious sect.
31:13Mondo, tell us about your look.
31:14I wanted to create something that was young and flirty, with a touch of whimsy, but still practical.
31:21It's really cool, and I think that this would stop you in your tracks.
31:24Also, you know, in the picture, I think it has something.
31:26I was kind of thinking about the opening credits for Marilee Tyler Moore and just how cute she was.
31:31So I just wanted her to, like, go on lunch and be noticed walking down the street.
31:35Well, I love that you said Mary Tyler Moore inspired you,
31:38because, actually, Mary Tyler Moore is why I moved to America.
31:42In the picture, it has energy, it has bounce, it has confidence,
31:46it feels professional, but not corporate.
31:48Thank you so much.
31:50Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
31:51We're gonna have a little chat, and then we call you back.
31:54You can leave the runway.
32:01All right, let's talk about the designs that we did like.
32:04Mondo tells the story.
32:05It's definitely a different kind of eye-catcher.
32:08For a poster, I think it would be also cool.
32:11I love the exuberance of his look.
32:14You know, it had movement, which, of course, on a billboard is great.
32:18I like the idea that it was tweed handled in a very feminine way.
32:21It had real confidence, which I think is very Mary Claire.
32:25Yeah, and it was whimsical.
32:26It's slightly eccentric in a good way.
32:28It wasn't this posy old...
32:30Yeah, like a bad catalog, right?
32:32Right.
32:36Let's talk about Gretchen.
32:37That would look amazing on a billboard.
32:39There was something about it that I thought was very sophisticated, but it wasn't old.
32:42And that's a really tricky thing to hit.
32:44And it had no season, no age, and the photograph was fantastic.
32:52She really has a modern aesthetic.
32:56We also liked Valerie's dress.
32:59She managed to find a way to do something that was sexy without being vulgar.
33:05It's very much a covered dress.
33:07Right, absolutely.
33:08It frames her face.
33:10All of this.
33:10It's perfect.
33:11She looked fabulous in it.
33:13She looked confident.
33:14She looked sexy.
33:15It's just one of those dresses that you love to go to.
33:17It's like a really good friend.
33:19All right, let's move on to the designers that we didn't like.
33:22Let's start with Jason.
33:24I think that any designer who has to have a disclaimer with everything that they design,
33:30you know, the clothes should really speak for themselves.
33:33The picture was terrible.
33:36We got the peekaboo belly button.
33:38So unflattering.
33:39How could he remotely think it was sexy?
33:41Has he ever spoken to a woman?
33:42I think, honestly, it was only about that figure eight.
33:46Let's talk about Nicolas.
33:48Well, I feel like he was so overly ambitious and each piece had something wrong with it.
33:53You know, I actually thought the blouse was pretty and then she turned around.
33:56Yeah, that scared me too, but I think he really tried.
33:59He just went crazy with the detailing and it didn't work.
34:04It might have been nice if the blouse did not look like the back was eaten.
34:07Well, yes.
34:08Maybe the model's too thin and she just ate her outfit.
34:11I don't know.
34:11But something definitely was a disaster here.
34:14Okay, let's talk about Peach.
34:18Ugh.
34:18Desperate housewives.
34:20Ugh.
34:21No, it's full Stepford Wife.
34:22When you talk about demographics of who reads the magazine, it's either way too young or way too old.
34:28Okay, the question is now, how many people do we want to get rid of today?
34:35Let's bring them back out.
34:36The six of you represent the best and the worst.
34:47One of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out.
34:58One of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out.
35:03Great.
35:05One of you.
35:05Good job.
35:06We loved your Mary Tyler Moore reference.
35:08It made us smile and captured the spirit, the energy and confidence of your design.
35:14Good job.
35:15You're in.
35:16You can lead the runway.
35:16Good job.
35:21Gretchen.
35:22Your design was urban,
35:24seasonless, modern and fun.
35:26Your photograph showed the potential of your design representing Mary Claire on a big billboard.
35:33Valerie your red dress was flirty and fun but yet sophisticated it embodied
35:39the Mary Claire woman the combination of dress styling and photo worked and made
35:44your dress memorable Gretchen congratulations you once again the winner
35:53of this challenge thank you so much thank you very much you can leave the
35:58runway I felt really grateful and really prideful I have won two challenges and
36:11I've set a bar that people maybe weren't expecting everything's gonna be huge I'm
36:18stoked about the billboard I think that's awesome all I know is it's gonna be in
36:24Times Square yeah I think Gretchen is one of the best designers in the room she's

37:00hoping to see something different from you this week something more impressive but
37:05again we got an unfinished mess with lots of excuses from you Peach we were split
37:14whether your dress was to junior or to country club matronly but the bad news is
37:19either way we did not like it Nicholas you tried to do way too many things with
37:25your design unfortunately the blouse skirt and cape failed Peach you're safe for
37:36today you can leave the runway thank you I heard you all Jason

41:02Next time on project runway
