00:01Previously on Project Runway.
00:04You will be creating a look out of potato sacks.
00:08Why is this navy blue?
00:10It's all one piece.
00:11Should it be one piece?
00:13I can't wipe that away.
00:18The dress is too tight on your model.
00:20A plain potato sack would be more flattering.
00:23If you turn around, we see a butt.
00:25Yeah, it does.
00:26They'll notice you.
00:27I feel like I don't see enough of the challenge in a way.
00:30Jay, you're the winner of this challenge.
00:32Thank you so much.
00:33Pamela, that means you're out.
00:36Seth Aaron, which one will be out?
00:38I would like to work with Sarah.
00:42I'm sorry, Elisabetta, that means you're out.
00:44This is Project Runway.
00:46Yes!
00:47I am fashion. Look at me.
00:48The search for the next big fashion designer.
00:51It's cut or be cut.
00:53Just make it work.
00:5516 designers.
00:56Great clothes.
00:57Great style.
00:58I've got it all.
00:59I've got it all.
01:00Three finalists will make it to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
01:03Well, I won't do anything to win.
01:05I will.
01:06But only one can be the winner.
01:08My weapon of choice.
01:10For these 16 designers, Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.
01:15The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
01:19An opportunity to sell their line on bluefly.com.
01:22A $50,000 technology suite to create, design and run their business from HP and Intel.
01:27And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch their line.
01:31In order for me to go forward in this competition, I need to be me and I need to decide what Jesus Estrada designed.
01:44He'll just surprise us each time.
01:45He'll do like the pink.
01:46Don't bring her name up.
01:47It's too early.
01:48I think Ping should have gone home.
01:49I'm completely shocked that she's still here.
01:53She's putting her contacts in.
01:54Uh-oh.
01:55I can only see through one eye.
01:56Maybe that'll help your design.
01:57All right, fellas, let's try it out.
01:58Oh, shoes!
01:59Got your cane.
02:00In order for me to go forward in this competition, I need to be me and I need to decide what Jesus Estrada designed.
02:07He'll just surprise us each time.
02:08Don't do like the pink.
02:09toilet.
02:10I think Ping should have gone home.
02:11I'm completely shocked that she's still here.
02:14She's putting her contacts in.
02:15Uh-oh.
02:16I can only see through one eye.
02:17Get your cane.
02:27Hello.
02:30It's time for your next challenge.
02:33Would you like to meet some of the most iconic fashion designers of all time?
02:38Mm-hmm.
02:39Tim is ready to introduce you to them,
02:41as well as fill you in on all the details for your next challenge.
02:45Good luck, and I'll see you on the runway.
02:48Bye, everybody.
02:49Bye.
02:52I've never met top designers before.
02:54Of course, it's Project Runway, so who knows?
02:57I know exactly where we're going.
02:59I know that that's the Met in front of us,
03:01and I'm super excited because the Met is one of the most inspiring places in the world.
03:06Good morning, designers, and welcome to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
03:18We are standing in the newly reopened American Wing's Charles Englehard Court.
03:24Surrounding us are ten iconic looks from the curatorial department of the Custom Institute,
03:29and as a fashion designer, the ultimate achievement is to be part of this collection.
03:35For this challenge, you will be working in teams of two
03:38to create a high-end signature look,
03:42a look, frankly, that could fit in with this company.
03:45And in order to ensure your success,
03:47we are giving you $500,
03:49the highest in the history of Project Runway.
03:53We'll have two days for this look.
03:57Yes!
03:58Jay, as the winner of the last challenge,
04:01you were automatically a team leader.
04:04Next is...
04:07Jesus.
04:09Anthony.
04:13Janine.
04:16Mila.
04:20Ping.
04:20I am very excited to be a leader
04:23because I'm very good at delegating responsibilities
04:26and giving clear instructions.
04:28And our last team leader is Emilio.
04:33Beginning with Jay,
04:34you will each select your other team member.
04:38Maya.
04:40Will you work with me?
04:43Jesus, who are you choosing?
04:44Amy.
04:45Anthony.
04:46I choose this day,
04:48Seth Aaron.
04:49Where's my brown sugar?
04:50Oh, my God!
04:52Ben, will you be my buddy?
04:54Yeah.
04:54Okay.
04:56Jonathan has excellent construction skills,
04:58so...
04:58Let's win it.
04:59Anna and I are the only ones left,
05:01and Ping has the decision to make,
05:03and I don't know how to play it
05:04because ultimately,
05:05I really don't want Ping to pick me.
05:06I would choose...
05:08JC.
05:12Ah.
05:13I don't know how the hell this is going to work.
05:16So, Emilio...
05:17We're going to do it.
05:18You're the classic American girl.
05:20Designers, before we go back to Parsons to sketch,
05:23I want you to take some time
05:24and really get inspired
05:26by these incredible, iconic pieces.
05:32I'm standing, like, this close to a classic Dior.
05:35There's no glass,
05:37there's no security guards,
05:38no pit bulls.
05:39And it's just...
05:42Ah.
05:43You see how Madame Greg has done this?
05:45These little pieces.
05:46Yeah.
05:46I've never been this close to couture before.
05:49Isn't it thrilling?
05:49I feel like I'm going to cry.
05:50I know.
05:51I feel the same way.
05:52I know.
05:52Like, I want our look to be really bold.
05:54I love all the...
05:55applique work.
05:57We're talking...
05:57The stuff I'm looking at,
05:58it's just awe-inspiring.
06:00Balenciaga and Dior both were designers
06:02that I very much looked up to.
06:03So, just to sit there
06:04and see that in front of me
06:06is absolutely amazing.
06:07Oh, Ben, give me a hug.
06:09I'm so excited.
06:10All right, designers,
06:11let's go back to Parsons and sketch.
06:13I was thinking I'm very drapey
06:23and three-dimensional,
06:24soft and organic and floaty kind of thing.
06:26And you are very tailored and precise.
06:28So, I was thinking combine these two.
06:31But this will be black on top.
06:32Okay, the jacket.
06:33Yeah.
06:34So, the surprise element will be the yellow.
06:36The yellow.
06:37Tim definitely made sure to tell us
06:39that in the end,
06:40the team lead had the final decision.
06:43And I tell you,
06:43Mila has no problem making decisions.
06:46Too risky.
06:47Like a jacket or a bolero or something?
06:49I think it's probably like a bolero, I think.
06:50Janine and I want to do two pieces
06:52because we want a look
06:54that is going to be multifunctional.
06:56Is there a way we could cheat around here?
06:59No, I think we should really focus on that boat neck.
07:03I really felt like I wanted to take the lead on this one
07:06because if we get in the bottom,
07:09since he has immunity,
07:10I would be the one to go home.
07:11So, I have to be the one to defend this.
07:14All right, design teams.
07:16We're going to Mood.
07:22Designers, welcome to Mood.
07:23You have 45 minutes.
07:26And your time starts now.
07:28Hello, Pink.
07:29Hello.
07:30Jesus and I are going to do
07:33kind of a dramatic dress
07:35with a large vest over it.
07:36I like this one.
07:37I'm just excited
07:38to get a lot of expensive fabrics.
07:39Yeah, that's the closest.
07:40Pink, make sure you know what you're grabbing.
07:42Oh, this side is beautiful.
07:43Gosh, it's all for physical work.
07:45Are you planning on being able to do this?
07:47No, you do it.
07:48That's going to with my pattern.
07:50We want to cut it all together.
07:51I don't want to have a yard
07:52and a half a yard extra.
07:54Give me that.
07:55Let's see the colors.
07:57I like this.
07:57I like the fact that it's hard and soft.
07:59Hard, soft.
08:00You want this one yard, right?
08:01Yeah.
08:02Where is my sketchbook?
08:03We found something.
08:05Okay, can we just keep this here for a minute
08:06and keep looking?
08:07This is a good possibility.
08:08I want to take a nod to the 60s.
08:12Just something kind of stunning
08:14and fashion forward at the same time.
08:16You want to see my sketchbook?
08:19Okay.
08:20Designers, you have five minutes remaining.
08:23You know what?
08:24It's not important.
08:25Forget it.
08:26Let's take this
08:26and let's go back downstairs.
08:28Jessie, Jessie.
08:31Hold on to that.
08:31That's $500 just sitting around.
08:34I just lost my sketchbook.
08:36I'm going to win the last of 500.
08:38Wait, did you get everything?
08:40Yeah.
08:41Ping, Jessie.
08:42You have two minutes remaining.
08:45There you go.
08:47Woo!
08:47483.
08:50Thank you for that.
08:58You start drawing.
09:00Mark your center back, first of all.
09:02Emilio and I are paired up together
09:04and it's a little bit intimidating for me
09:06that he really is established as a designer
09:08versus my relative newness.
09:12Emilio, are you some kind of secret genius?
09:14He has more of a bold design sense
09:16and in a way I have sort of a softness
09:18and a certain adaptiveness.
09:20Let's get on to the coat as soon as we can.
09:22Bear with me because I tend to like
09:24really need to like digest things.
09:27Mila is a very meticulous worker,
09:29very planned.
09:30She spends a lot of time pattern making
09:31so we work a little bit differently.
09:33She's doing a lot of thinking
09:35and I'm doing a lot of executing.
09:37We were always told that this should be a team effort.
09:40However, the team leader does take more responsibility
09:44and is at greater risk.
09:46I don't want it to look like a Miss America sash, though.
09:50Are you seeing it right here?
09:51Yeah.
09:51So the necklace will be attached,
09:53but it's not going to be...
09:54It won't be attached to the skirt.
09:56You're going to cover all this?
09:58I'm not going to do all this work
09:59if you're going to cover it.
10:00It's very difficult to work with Jesse.
10:03I do things less by the book.
10:06He may feel insecure with my approach.
10:09I'll build the pants.
10:11Match with that.
10:12Just pants?
10:13Yeah.
10:16With Ping, I'm always worried about time.
10:18She's constantly changing ideas
10:21and things are always evolving.
10:22We've got to pick our ideas.
10:23Okay, don't tell me anything anymore.
10:24Let me...
10:25I'm not used to, you know,
10:28to wonder about my designs.
10:30I feel like I'm just trying to rein in the crazy.
10:33The reason why I keep changing
10:34is because you make me doubt about my design.
10:39It's not that I'm doubting the vision.
10:40I just want to know that there is one.
10:43Coming up on Project Runway.
10:45Wow, that's the fabric?
10:47You're not doing it right.
10:48Get the hell out of my way.
10:49You two look really stressed out, if you ask me.
10:51We don't have time to finish it.
10:56Our challenge is to create a high-end signature look
11:00based on our personal style as designers.
11:03Right on, brother.
11:04Ping and Jesse are fighting the whole time,
11:06so it's really hard to see
11:07if they're going to be able to pull off a cohesive look.
11:10You only worry about this right now,
11:11and I'll continue to think about the entire look.
11:14And I'll tell you exactly.
11:15No, that's a good place to start.
11:19So far, it's been great working with Jonathan.
11:21We're very excited about our look.
11:23These look too wingy to you.
11:25He's given me the lead in the construction of the coat,
11:28and he's making the top and the pants.
11:32Don't screw it up, Jonathan.
11:34Don't try to get in my head, Jesse.
11:35You're just going to punch you in the throat?
11:37Our color palette is bright yellow, red, and black.
11:42So at this point, I think that we are designing a gown
11:46for the vice president of McDonald's.
11:49However, everybody needs a dress.
11:54I'm building a dress that is about 30 different pieces
11:58that will be pieced together sort of like origami.
12:00We've got two days to do it,
12:02and I think we're going to need a lot more time.
12:03Today, we're ready.
12:15We're thanking Anthony and I.
12:16We got all day to finish just this little bit of stitch work,
12:21and Tim walks in.
12:22Good morning, everybody.
12:24Good morning, Mr. Jen.
12:25Gather around, please.
12:26Right over here.
12:27Classic.
12:30I've gathered you together to tell you
12:32that you will be creating an additional look.
12:36You all know that there is a mass market customer
12:39who wants to wear fashionable yet affordable clothes.
12:42So for the second part of this challenge,
12:44you will be creating what I'm calling a look for less
12:46using 10% of the budget you have for your signature look.
12:51I'll go buy some napkins and paper towels and some hot glue.
12:57I mean, what do you do with 50 bucks?
12:59And this look for less will be derived
13:01from the look of another team.
13:06The key word here is derivation.
13:09You are designers.
13:10You are not plagiarists.
13:12As I pull each team from the bag,
13:15that team will declare which team's look
13:18they want to work with.
13:19We have Ping and Jesse.
13:20I would say Emilio.
13:22Janine and Ben.
13:24We'll do Mila and Jonathan.
13:25OK.
13:26Yeah.
13:27Jay and Maya.
13:28We're going to go with Ben and Janine.
13:31Mila and Jonathan.
13:32We're going to do Anthony and Seth.
13:34Yeah.
13:34OK.
13:35Anthony and Seth Aaron.
13:36Jesus and Amy.
13:39And now we have Jesus and Amy.
13:41Ping and Jesse.
13:42Emilio and Anna, you have Maya and Jay.
13:45Great.
13:45We have to make another outfit inspired by another designer's look.
13:50I'm shocked at this point because we're still not done with our other look.
13:54All right.
13:54You will now have 20 minutes.
13:57Then we're going shopping at Mood.
13:58And I only want one team member.
14:01So your 20 minutes begins right now.
14:04Go, go.
14:05Ping's construction is very drapey.
14:08And we can just grab a piece of fabric and drape a pair of beautiful pants.
14:13Jay's and Maya's dress is very sculptural.
14:16So Anna and I decided to design an asymmetrical dress in their colors.
14:22Do the lace at the bottom and do the peach right here.
14:25At this point, my mind's just going peach and lace.
14:28It's like old lady.
14:29Our time frame is horrifying.
14:31We are going to do a really cute cocktail dress.
14:34I mean, we could put straps on it.
14:37This is their stitches.
14:38We're not copying them but making it cheaper.
14:40I'm not copying it.
14:41But what I'm saying is we don't need to do a jacket.
14:43We just sketched together something that's not too difficult.
14:45I'm just a little worried because I won't be going shopping.
14:48So I don't know what Ping is going to come back with.
14:53All right, designers.
14:55Your 20 minutes starts right now.
14:57They're off.
15:00There's nothing like that up here.
15:02Oh, okay, okay.
15:03Yeah.
15:04Black and white.
15:05Mila and Jonathan have been using silk.
15:09Okay, I need it.
15:09But cotton, obviously, is absolutely appropriate for a look for less.
15:14Dark or ribbon?
15:15I know where...
15:16Ping, five minutes.
15:20This is perfect.
15:22Designers, time is up.
15:24I'm done.
15:24Come on, everyone.
15:25Let's go back to Parsons.
15:27Thank you, everybody.
15:28I got a fabulous, fabulous fabric.
15:32Look.
15:33I don't even know the best way to describe it, but it's a nice hooker kind of shiny, synthetic something.
15:39I can just imagine the judges saying, this looks cheap.
15:42I'm a little nervous that we won't be able to finish, but at the same time, I have immunity,
15:47so there really isn't a lot of pressure.
15:49We've cut the patterns, and Maya's responsibility is to sew these pieces together.
15:55Why are you bringing your ass over here?
15:58It's big, Tay.
15:59I'm going to take a break.
16:00Oh.
16:01I secretly wish that I wasn't working with Jay, because if he didn't have immunity, he would
16:05probably be working a little harder.
16:07Oh, my God.
16:08We have the skirt pattern.
16:10At this point, Ben and I have a really solid design, but it's like the first time from
16:15starting a challenge where I feel really good about the work.
16:19That saves us an hour.
16:21That's good.
16:22Yeah.
16:24I'm still cranking out the coat because it really needs to be perfectly sewn together.
16:30I love how, like, we haven't even thought about starting on our second look yet.
16:34If you're not making it, you know it's not getting it done.
16:36At this point, the workload hasn't changed.
16:39I'm still sewing everything, and Mila's still making the coat.
16:42Now I'm making the second look as well, so that is concerning me a little bit.
16:46You better get away with some sewing.
16:49Well, yeah, I'm fine until people bring me the paper and change the game.
16:53Well, this is ugly.
16:54I'm the type that, if you're not doing it right, get the hell out of my way, because
16:57I will keep changing it until I'm happy.
16:59If I don't compromise 100% to what you want, then you can't seem to find a middle ground
17:04with me.
17:05Seth Aaron is not accustomed to working with other individuals, but I knew that slapping the
17:10hell out of Seth Aaron was probably not the best way to get the greatest result.
17:13I'm following you, though.
17:14Mm-mm.
17:15Seth Aaron, I'm going to make you write it in blood, because every time you tell me you
17:18like something, you change it.
17:24Good.
17:25How are you?
17:26We made a beautiful dress for you.
17:28Look.
17:32I'm basically running the fittings now, as well as constructing everything.
17:36Can we look at it just...
17:41No, no.
17:42Wait, wait, wait, wait.
17:42Don't say no.
17:43I don't think Jesse take me seriously as a leader.
17:47He questioned about everything I said to him.
17:50It was a question, because we're experimenting, because I want to see my...
17:53...dress.
17:54And I think it's a very unprofessional behavior.
17:57You guys can trust me to play with it and be dramatic.
18:01Go the other way with it.
18:02No, no, no.
18:02I don't want to start like this.
18:03I want to start with the sleeve on.
18:05You're so damn quiet.
18:07I'm the team leader.
18:08I know you're the team leader.
18:09You're making that clear.
18:10Ping and Jesse are like Lucy and Ricky.
18:13Just shut up and work.
18:15It's time for them to go.
18:17Bye, y'all.
18:19Bye.
18:20I was just saying, Ping, you've been really doing an awesome job.
18:23Your dress is beautiful.
18:26Yes.
18:29Ping.
18:30Hmm?
18:30You didn't have nothing nice to say in return to me.
18:34I think you're very funny, very sweet, very nice.
18:38I like you too, sister.
18:42How is everybody?
18:44Hi.
18:45You two look really stressed out, if you ask me.
18:48Well, we're still constructing a lot.
18:50Do you have a timeline?
18:52We want to build this by midnight tonight.
18:54Yeah.
18:54What's the status of the second look?
18:56We're thinking of doing a long sleeve, but if we don't have time to finish the whole thing,
18:59we'll just do our best.
19:01Keep it simple.
19:02Tim is doubting the fact that we can get this finished on time, but I think when you have
19:06some fire under your ass, you sort of, where there's a will, there's a way.
19:10Ping, Jesse, where are you in this process?
19:14For this one, we only need to stitch them together.
19:18How did this fit work?
19:19Shockingly well.
19:20Where do you stand with the second look?
19:22Basically, do a short pleated skirt, and then the top.
19:26Wow.
19:26That's the fabric?
19:27Yeah.
19:28It's like a cheap and cheerful wrapping paper.
19:30But this is very expensive fabric, and it's very...
19:33Looks cheap.
19:34All right.
19:35Don't look at me, Ping.
19:36Make it work.
19:38That's the name, Seth Aaron.
19:40Talk to me.
19:41This dress truly is couture.
19:44It's mostly hand sewing.
19:45This is our other look, and we're going to do a blouse with some pleated detail.
19:51You have so clearly identified that it's coming from Jesus and Amy.
19:55Right.
19:55I say you have the freedom to do whatever you want to the top.
19:58Well, Papa here has already made an asymmetric top, and for whatever reason, he's decided
20:04to abandon it.
20:05I didn't abandon it.
20:06If it's on the floor, you abandon it.
20:09Stop acting up in front of company.
20:11Now, come on.
20:13Hi, Mila.
20:14Hi.
20:14Jonathan.
20:15Hi.
20:16Tell me where you are in this process.
20:18Well, we fit this on our model, and we just need some finishing.
20:24I think it's beautifully done, and I know what this is.
20:26This is Anthony and Seth Aaron.
20:28Yes.
20:28All right.
20:29Well, that's a good thing that I know what it is.
20:30That's a good thing that you knew.
20:31Yeah.
20:32All right, designers.
20:33Work, work, work.
20:34All of you.
20:36Damn.
20:37It's a mess.
20:40I got the dress pretty much together.
20:42I'm just going to let Ping work on these other elements.
20:45To get her out of the way, and I'll just basically, you know, bust my ass to make this happen.
20:50Okay.
20:56Coming up on Project Runway.
20:58This is beautiful, dude.
20:59The Anthony and Seth Aaron dress hideously.
21:01You have ten minutes.
21:03Time is running out.
21:04We're leaving to where?
21:05Ping.
21:06Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
21:11Are you prepared for today?
21:15I'm stack, packed, and ready to attack.
21:19Jonathan is feeling it right now.
21:20Oh, Jonathan's feeling the pain.
21:22Yeah.
21:22Mila's only done the jacket.
21:24Period.
21:24For two days.
21:26Runway day is going to be a busy day.
21:29Mila's time management issues are concerning to me.
21:33I have not had a challenge yet where I've left the room and not had a finished garment.
21:37So, I'm so nervous.
21:41I want a coffee.
21:41It's so nice.
21:43What?
21:43You look so nice together.
21:45You look like we're going to a funeral.
21:48The death of our hopes and dreams.
21:49All right, let's do this.
21:59This is beautiful, dude.
22:01The Anthony and Seth Aaron dress great concept, hideous execution.
22:06Anthony spent too much time decorating and not enough time figuring out proper construction.
22:13I want to do the best that I can do, and I really want to win.
22:21Jay, who's kind of slacking a little bit.
22:23It's making me a little frustrated that he's leaning on his immunity.
22:27I was also thinking we should redo that dress a little bit, maybe.
22:31Do we have time?
22:32I feel Jesse is much more concerned about his own safety during this competition than the teamwork quality.
22:42My insecurity about this is that, you know, if they ask who made everything, it's like, you made everything with a coat pretty much.
22:50Mila took everything that might have been outside of her realm and put it on me just in case it backfired.
22:55I know how badly Mila wants to be here, and I do think she would sell me out on the runway.
22:59I also know that I would sell her own.
23:01Well, honestly, I mean, there are other teams where something similar happened.
23:05Okay.
23:05Do you know what I'm telling you?
23:06Where, like, one person's more in charge of, like, sewing and...
23:10Well, no, I mean, I don't want to seem like a seamstress.
23:12Exactly.
23:13This whole outfit was such a vision of mine.
23:19Good morning, Tim.
23:20Good morning, everybody.
23:21How are you?
23:21Good.
23:22Good.
23:23Designers, it is a big day.
23:26It's your first team challenge judging.
23:28So each team will have an hour to send their models to the Garnier Hair Salon and the L'Oreal Paris Makeup Room, all right?
23:35All right.
23:35I trust that you have studied the bluefly.com wall and that you're using it very thoughtfully.
23:40I'm sending in your models, so let's do it.
23:44Yeah!
23:44All right.
23:45I'll see you a little later.
23:47All right.
23:47You're going second, you're going first.
23:49Oh, whoosh the clock.
23:51I'm a little concerned for Jesse and Ping only because they've been bickering a lot.
23:56Ping, what do you think of doing this button right in the center?
23:58Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
24:00I think their look for less doesn't really resemble Emilio and Anna's look.
24:04They kind of missed the mark on that one.
24:05Make sure that this doesn't poof up too much.
24:09Amy and I are really, really happy about what we had created.
24:13I cannot be in the bottom two anymore.
24:17Did you already consult makeup?
24:19It's time for makeup.
24:23Just keep it really fun and really fresh and young.
24:25Smokey eyes.
24:26And a pale skin.
24:27Skin.
24:31We want sort of like a little sleek thing.
24:37Very springy.
24:38Classic.
24:39Three minutes, guys.
24:44Designers and models, you have ten minutes before we go down to the runway, all right?
24:48Do you like it?
24:54Does it feel okay?
24:54Absolutely.
24:55Let's go.
24:57Time is running out, and it's not easy to make a grand dress in a day and a half.
25:02I did the best I could.
25:07When the model put on the signature look, I think it's beautiful.
25:12Designers and models, this is it.
25:17We're going down to the runway right now.
25:20Is there anyone listening to me?
25:22Yes.
25:23Come, come.
25:24Let's go, Ant.
25:26Let's go.
25:27We're leading to where?
25:28Down to the runway show.
25:29Are you sure?
25:30At this point, safe is a victory for me, so that's my goal, and it sucks to shoot that low,
25:35but ultimately, middle, safe is all I want.
25:39Jay, Jonathan, Jessie, Ping.
25:42Ping.
25:43Yes.
25:52Coming up on Project Runway, they're both really ugly.
25:57I'm at the cotillion party from hell.
26:05Welcome to the runway.
26:09As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day, you're out.
26:14For this challenge, you worked in teams.
26:16Your first assignment was to create a high-end signature look.
26:21Then we gave you a little twist.
26:24We asked you to create a second look that was a more affordable design for $50.
26:29You were asked to use another team's signature look for inspiration, but you were not to copy it.
26:35All right, let's meet the judges.
26:37First, we have top American designer, Michael Kors.
26:40Hey, guys.
26:42Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
26:45Hi, everyone.
26:47And acclaimed British designer, Matthew Williamson.
26:50Awesome.
26:52We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
26:56One of you will be named the winner, and one or more of you will be out.
27:03All right, let's start the show.
27:05The gown is everything I needed it to be.
27:10The dress is beautiful, and it speaks greatly to who I am and what I celebrate, and that's classic elegance and beauty.
27:21Amy and I were both really, really happy about what we had created.
27:26It looks really high fashion.
27:28It looks modern, and Holly looks amazing in it.
27:30I feel so confident about the signature look.
27:36I am absolutely thrilled with the way it turned out.
27:39I feel like this was the first challenge in which I could truly express my point of view.
27:44It looked amazing.
27:45As I see my signature look walk down the runway, I am so satisfied.
27:53It's well made, and I think Brittany looks really great up there.
27:57The dress fits like a glove.
28:01We could have been more innovative, but I'm working with someone who has very limited experience, so I had to scale down just to make sure that we had a garment on the runway.
28:10This dress definitely expresses my voice as a designer, because it's a little bit futuristic, but yet it has sort of an old classic Hollywood style to it.
28:21It's kind of one of those dresses where you either think it's really cool or you think it's really weird, so it was a leap of faith for me.
28:28The signature look, it's beautiful.
28:35It's more beautiful than I ever thought.
28:40I think it's very elegant.
28:48So the look for less is a great look.
28:50It's a really good interpretation of paying in Jessie's outfit, so I'm excited to see what the judges think.
28:58Our look for less was well done, you know, 50 bucks in a few hours, we did a pretty good job.
29:03But looking at the judges, I'm not sure if they're liking it, hating it, wanting to burn it, I have no idea.
29:12Our second look is definitely the scaled down version of the signature look that we were inspired by.
29:20We asked Monique to be bouncy and flirty.
29:23That's exactly what she gave us, fun and flirty.
29:28We're both, you know, extremely proud of the look for less.
29:31Even though it's not our particular look, it's still our work and it's very cool.
29:36The look for less, I'm really confident in.
29:39It looks really sellable.
29:40It's youthful.
29:42It's really a reflection of me.
29:44I like the outfit, the skirt fits, the top fits, and the vest is really cute.
29:53I feel like we've both represented our design aesthetic.
29:59I think our second look is not as strong as it could be.
30:02It's not how I would represent myself if I had the choice.
30:04If I call your name, please step forward.
30:13Janine and Ben.
30:16Jesus and Amy.
30:19Emilio and Anna, please step forward.
30:21If I have called your name, congratulations.
30:25Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
30:28You can leave the runway.
30:29The eight of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:36One of you will be named the winner, and one or more of you will be out.
30:43Anthony, Seth Aaron, Ping, and Jesse, your teams have the lowest scores.
30:51We're going to talk with the teams of the highest scores first, and then we bring it back out.
30:57We can leave the runway.
30:58Let's bring out your models.
31:07Jay, you have immunity this week, so did you kind of slack a little bit this week?
31:12The immunity did not mean anything to me.
31:14Good.
31:15Please tell us first about your signature look.
31:17I wanted to make something that looked like it could be in a museum,
31:21something that a collector would want to have.
31:23It's unique, dramatic.
31:25I think it's really striking.
31:26I particularly like this very bare side, where you cut it very thin.
31:32Feels very modern.
31:33Let's bring out the look that inspired your look for less.
31:36We've really just played with a lot of, like, the lines and the curves and just combining those, you know, two things together.
31:42And the whole thing costs $46.
31:45$46.
31:46And that was $500.
31:49Yeah.
31:50This is more interesting, has more work, more dimension in it than that.
31:54Your $46 blows the $500 out of the water.
31:59Mila, Jonathan, please tell us first about your signature look.
32:02Well, the concept here was to create an evening ensemble that was fun, yet still elegant.
32:09For me, you guys sold me absolutely on the signature look.
32:13I think that suit looks amazing.
32:15I would love to have that, and I can see you in it.
32:17Lorena, can we see it from the back?
32:20I think it's kind of a sportswear-inspired.
32:22It's very clean and graphic.
32:24The coat looks fabulous.
32:26I really love this look.
32:29Let's bring out the look that inspired your look for less.
32:32We're inspired by Seth, Aaron, and Anthony.
32:34We took their gown into a junior's kind of place.
32:39First off, any editor would be like a baby doll dress.
32:42Forget it.
32:43It could have been something very, very modern and simple,
32:46and it would have still been your interpretation of that.
32:50And it would have probably been a lot stronger.
32:52We did throw around the idea of a trapeze,
32:54and I think we probably should have gone with our instinct.
32:56The most important thing as a designer is your instinct.
32:59Listen to your gut.
33:00But kudos, I love the coat, and I'm happy to see some separates.
33:03My God, this is how people dress.
33:06There's logic.
33:09Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
33:11Can you leave the runway?
33:15Okay, let's bring out the designers with the lowest scores.
33:20Ping, Jessie, would you please tell us first about your signature look?
33:24When we went to the museum and saw all those very famous clothes,
33:28I'm thinking I need to design something that's basically timeless.
33:32Can I just see what happens when she doesn't hold it?
33:35It's a tail, basically.
33:37I just feel like this is just a bunch of fabric wrapped around a model.
33:43She's got to stand like the Statue of Liberty to wear this dress.
33:46She looks like she had her little lace negligee on,
33:49and you were working on her draping some fabric,
33:53and suddenly a bell went off, and she ran out with the draping fabric.
33:57Let's bring out the look that inspired you.
33:59I designed the top.
34:03Jessie designed the skirt.
34:05I don't think anyone designed anything.
34:07I think the only thing that it has in common with the original outfit
34:11is that it's got some gray in it.
34:14It's just an ill-fitting blah dress.
34:17Who did most of the sewing?
34:19I sewed both of the dresses.
34:20Because I had to teach sewing lessons while we were working.
34:24You had to teach sewing lessons to Ping?
34:27Yes.
34:28That's what he meant.
34:31Megan is dying to say something.
34:33She never fit me in this.
34:35So she never really looked at you in the dress?
34:38Never.
34:38Well, it checks.
34:41Let's move on.
34:43Anthony, Seth Aaron.
34:44We really love the classic Dior silhouette.
34:47So that was our foundation for this gown.
34:51It looks like I'm at the cotillion party in the south from hell.
34:57Because this is so costumey, this gown.
35:02I mean, she's in Gone with the Wind.
35:04What would you have done to have made it more modern and more forward-thinking?
35:10We can't design it for you.
35:11It's how you translate your inspiration into your aesthetic.
35:17Let's bring out the look that inspired you.
35:19Okay, explain your look for less, please.
35:22We were spending too much time trying to figure out how we were going to do the top.
35:25Yeah, we need to simplify and move forward.
35:27That is how much you stand behind your outfit.
35:30We just had to do something because we were running out of time.
35:33It looks like kind of an acetate cocktail dress on the cheap dress floor.
35:39And you look at the inspiration, you know, you could have...
35:41It's beautiful.
35:42So it could have had a little bit more see-throughness, show a little bit more skin maybe.
35:46And that's my fault.
35:48They're both really ugly.
35:51Too much and too much looking back as opposed to looking forward.
35:57And I'm surprised that Seth, you didn't step in.
35:59I did respect, he was the leader, but it was 50-50.
36:03And this is what we ended up with.
36:06And I'm going to stand behind it.
36:08We've heard what you had to say.
36:09We're going to have a little chat.
36:10And then I bring it back out.
36:13You can leave the runway.
36:20Let's start with Jay and Maya.
36:23I love the look for Les.
36:24It was one of the few outfits, I think, that you could take off that runway.
36:28She looked, you know, like lots of girls would want to look like.
36:31They actually, for $46, turned out something that looked chic, had edge to it, and was wearable.
36:38It was all of the above.
36:39And they managed to do it very, very nicely.
36:44Also designers that we did like was Mila and Jonathan.
36:47I thought the coat was really exciting and it had a real signature to it.
36:53It was unique to my eye.
36:55It looked like it stood out from the crowd.
36:56And it was made beautifully.
36:58Well, I like the idea that she didn't make a dress.
37:01And it has Mila's signature on it.
37:03Very her.
37:06Let's talk about Pink's dress.
37:08It was a confusing, labored, cacophony of ideas.
37:12What I don't appreciate is that she did not pay any attention whatsoever to the look for Les.
37:17But she spends more time with the signature piece.
37:20Doesn't even fit the other dress.
37:22Let's talk about Anthony and Seth Aaron.
37:27I feel they were too literal in their inspiration.
37:32I don't know if it was clear in their minds that it was about going to the museum, being inspired, but then making a fashionable dress for today.
37:40It looks costumey.
37:42It needs to go back in the museum.
37:45Okay, so we've made our decision.
37:47All right, let's bring them back out then.
38:01Your teams had the highest and the lowest scores.
38:05One of you will be named the winner.
38:07And one or more of you will be out.
38:11One of you will be named the winner.
38:22And one or more of you will be out.
38:26Jonathan, you're in.
38:29You can leave the runway.
38:34Mila, your signature look was exciting and modern.
38:38We're glad that you thought about something other than a gown.
38:43Congratulations.
38:44You're the winner of this challenge.
38:48Thank you so much.
38:51You also have immunity for the next challenge and cannot be eliminated.
38:55You can leave the runway.
38:57Oh, it feels amazing to win this challenge.
39:01I won!
39:02I won!
39:02I won!
39:03I won!
39:03I won!
39:03This challenge was really important to me because the signature look was so true to who I am as a designer.
39:12It just really means a lot to me.
39:17Maya, you're in.
39:18You can leave the runway.
39:20Jay, you're in.
39:21You can leave the runway.
39:24You have the lowest scores.
39:27And one of you, or maybe two, will be out.
39:29Anthony and Seth Aaron, instead of giving us forward-looking, you gave us costumey, old-fashioned,
39:40ball gown.
39:41And your look for less was poorly made and really unflattering.
39:46Ping and Jesse, your look for less was under-designed, ill-fitting, and a major snooze.
39:53On the other hand, your signature look was overworked and literally had to be held up by your model.
40:00It was a mess.
40:06Seth Aaron, you're in.
40:07You can leave the runway.
40:08Thank you so much.
40:12Jesse, you're in.
40:14You can leave the runway.
40:23Anthony.
40:33You're in.
40:34Yeah.
40:37You can leave the runway.
40:48I'm sorry, Ping.
40:49That means you're out.
40:50I came here to learn and to see what I can do.
41:04And I truly feel that I did an amazing job, even surprised myself.
41:10I would like you to remember everything, not the crying thing, even though I cried a lot.
41:15And whether I win or not, it's really not my priority.
41:22The journey continues.
41:25I have to send you to the workroom to clean up your space.
41:27Okay.
41:27And I cannot imagine that workroom without you.
41:30I'm proud of myself.
41:33This will be unforgettable experience in my entire life.
41:38Next time on Project Runway.
41:42You will be designing for a very inspiring group of women.
41:46That leaves you open for anything.
41:47Go, go, go.
41:48This is honestly the largest challenge that I've ever faced as a designer.
41:54Oh, shoot.
41:56This is definitely a fashion emergency of Chernobyl proportions.
41:59People are kind of freaking out.
42:01Michael, what do you think?
42:03Where do I start?
42:05Shiny, short, tight, tacky.
42:08I'm just not sure about your taste.
42:11Good bosoms.
42:13Yep.
42:13Excellent.
42:14Excellent.
42:31Have a great day.
42:54Bye.
42:54Bye.
42:57Bye.
42:59Bye.
42:59Bye.
42:59Bye.
43:00Bye.
43:00Bye.
