00:01Previously on Project Runway...
00:03For this challenge, the inspiration for your design will come from one of the four natural elements.
00:08Earth, air, fire, or water.
00:11Full speed ahead.
00:12It'll be a little bit 80s little Blade Runner.
00:14I identify with pale people.
00:16I'm worried about your work in particular.
00:19Ben's trousers are just awful.
00:22I couldn't even start over if I wanted to.
00:27It looks like a cat in a baby sling.
00:29This is a perfectly beautiful dress.
00:32Come on, Ben.
00:33A jockstrap pant?
00:34It's wacky.
00:35It's bizarre.
00:37Jonathan, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:41I'm sorry, Ben, that meets your route.
00:42Oh, no.
00:44Anthony, which model will be in?
00:47I'm gonna have to take a chance to Monique.
00:49I'm sorry, Alison, that meets your route.
00:52This is Project Runway.
00:54Yes!
00:55I am fashion.
00:56Look at me.
00:57It's cut or be cut.
00:58Just make it work.
01:00Great clothes.
01:01Great style.
01:02Three finalists will make it to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
01:05Well, they won't do anything to win.
01:06I will.
01:07But only one can be the winner.
01:10My weapon of choice.
01:11For these 16 designers, Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.
01:16The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie-Claire magazine.
01:20An opportunity to sell their line on bluefly.com.
01:23A $50,000 technology suite to create, design and run their business from HP and Intel.
01:29And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch their line.
01:33I was in the bottom three.
01:34And it definitely means that I have to step it up for this next challenge and prove myself
01:45again.
01:46I feel like I've kind of lost myself a little bit.
01:48I'm ready to redeem myself today.
01:51Do something, kick ass again.
01:53I'm ready to win.
01:56I'm a little jealous that I haven't won a challenge yet.
01:59And it is at the point now where everybody's won a challenge except for me.
02:03Yeah, it's frustrating for sure.
02:12It's down to only eight of you.
02:15Half of you are gone.
02:17For your next challenge, we want you to get into a New York state of mind.
02:22Tim will meet you in the designer's lounge to fill you in on all of the details.
02:26Good luck.
02:27And I'll see you on the runway.
02:29Bye.
02:30Bye.
02:31I'm not exactly sure what that hint means, so I'm going to wait till I have all of the
02:36details of this particular challenge before I go trying to flood my mind with unnecessary
02:41thoughts.
02:42Designers, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Collier Strong, a consulting makeup artist
02:47for L'Oreal Paris.
02:48Yay.
02:49Designers, for this challenge, you will be using New York City as the point of departure
02:53for your design.
02:54Yes.
02:55Yes.
02:56Yes.
02:57And we're sending you out into the city.
02:59Nice.
03:00You will be going to one of four very distinctive neighborhoods.
03:04These neighborhoods have been selected because of their history, their cultural significance,
03:08and frankly, for their impact on fashion.
03:10And they are Chinatown, the East Village, the Upper East Side, and Harlem.
03:17Woo-hoo!
03:18I feel that I have to win this challenge because I am from New York, and if I don't win this
03:22one, it would be a real disappointment for me and for my people.
03:26And I have more exciting news.
03:28You will be working in teams of two.
03:34Please, God Almighty, don't let me be stuck with Mila.
03:37Please.
03:38I'm not a huge fan of teams.
03:40You never know who you're going to get.
03:42Each team will create two looks, a look for day and a look for evening.
03:47And each team will have a budget of $300.
03:50And I will determine the team leaders by selecting your names from our velvet bag.
03:55Oh.
03:56Anthony.
03:58Amy.
04:01Emilio.
04:02Oh, good.
04:03Jay.
04:04Being the last leader to get picked, I know that I'm going to get stuck with whoever's
04:08not going to get picked, and I'm scared to death.
04:11So, Anthony, you're first.
04:14Maya.
04:17Amy.
04:18I choose Jonathan.
04:19Yay!
04:21I really wanted to work with her, and I was hoping she wanted to work with me.
04:24Emilio.
04:25I'm going to choose...
04:28Beth.
04:29Yay!
04:30The whole team dynamic is about strategizing.
04:33Jay and Mila don't get along, so it's a win-win situation.
04:38I can't breathe.
04:39My heart's pounding.
04:41Oh.
04:43So, Jay, you're working with Mila.
04:45Wow.
04:46Great.
04:47The guy that I never talked to, and the guy that I don't really like, he and I have to
04:52work together now.
04:54My God, I'm stuck with Mila.
04:56All right, now in reverse order, you're going to choose one of the four neighborhoods.
05:00We've decided the East Village.
05:01The East Village?
05:02Yes.
05:03So, Emilio and Seth Aaron.
05:04We choose Harlem.
05:05Harlem?
05:06It's a no-brainer, and I spent a lot of time in Harlem.
05:09So, Amy, you and Jonathan have Chinatown or the Upper East Side?
05:13Upper East Side.
05:14That means that Anthony and Maya have Chinatown.
05:17Collier.
05:18I'm here to help you create makeup looks that fully complement and expand on your designs.
05:22We'll be using L'Oreal's new Studio Secret Professional line that enables all women to
05:27get professional results at home.
05:28I'm sending you off to your neighborhoods, where you will have 30 minutes to explore and
05:33sketch, and then I will meet you at Mood.
05:36And later today, you'll have a consultation with Collier.
05:38So, run off to your neighborhoods.
05:40Woo!
05:46I'm just happy to be back in my own neighborhood.
05:48The smells, the people, the color.
05:51I'm home.
05:52The problem is about churches, liquor stores, and fried chicken spots.
05:57Well, I'll do the liquor store and fried chicken.
05:59Our styles are completely different.
06:01This could be a complete disaster, or our two styles could totally just weave together
06:07and make something fantastic.
06:09Look at Grandma.
06:10Look at Grandma.
06:11Look at Grandma.
06:12Look around.
06:13Here.
06:14Yeah.
06:15See, that's hot.
06:16That's hot.
06:17She is hot.
06:18Look at her shoes.
06:19Look at her shoes.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Oh, you look great.
06:22She's probably like 70 years old and look.
06:23She's hot.
06:24Tight denim jeans.
06:25The first thing you see when you go to Harlem is that 99.5 of the people are wearing denim.
06:28The denim.
06:29That's what it is.
06:30The denim's here.
06:31That's where it's at.
06:32This is Harlem.
06:33We should do this for the day and for night.
06:36All that kind of mosaic.
06:38What if we got the pants doing this?
06:40You know, in the color palette we choose, but this effect.
06:43That effect.
06:44Sounds good?
06:45Yeah, I think.
06:46All right.
06:47Well, welcome to Harlem, baby.
06:53When I think of Chinatown, I really think of structure.
06:56Me too.
06:57And, like, the buildings.
06:58There's a lot of red, certainly.
06:59Red.
07:00Okay.
07:01Walking around in Chinatown, there are so many people just moving.
07:06And the streets are really, really narrow.
07:09Everything's very colorful.
07:11I'm really glad that Anthony chose me as a partner.
07:14We're having fun.
07:15He's making me laugh.
07:16And he's bringing the silly into it.
07:18Sometimes I need a little dose of that.
07:20Oh, those pigs in that window.
07:22What is that?
07:23That's stuck.
07:24Ew.
07:25Ew!
07:26What about these ladders here as a detail for a daytime, like on a jacket?
07:31I think this window alone is just a great source of inspiration.
07:34And even if we did something like this with gold on the inside of them, you know?
07:39The perfect head's coming up for me right now.
07:41On the Upper East Side, there is a feeling of high-end or luxury.
07:48The architecture is all very, like, stark and gray.
07:52First thing Amy and I notice is how static of a place it is.
07:56There's almost no movement.
07:58Ah!
08:00Houston, we have a problem.
08:02Her style in Upper East Side might be a little bit of a clash.
08:06See, I feel like it's important to stay true to what type of...
08:10What goes on here?
08:11What type of people are here.
08:12We thought that a shirt dress is something that someone in Upper East Side might wear on a casual day.
08:17I actually really love this, too.
08:19The brick?
08:20Just the texture of that.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Is this a very Upper East Side thing?
08:24Yes.
08:25It is?
08:26And for the evening look, we really wanted to use Jonathan's cutaway technique to represent the wrought iron that we saw on the doors and the gates.
08:33Let's get fabrics that are easy to do techniques on, and then we'll work out what the actual technique is.
08:38I'm really feeling the graffiti, are you?
08:43I love the texture.
08:45I just have to get over the fact that I don't like her.
08:47This challenge is to really test me as a leader to Mila.
08:51I want to do a woman who lives in this neighborhood.
08:53She's modern but appreciates things from the past.
08:56I love the East Village.
08:57I understand the East Village.
08:59The East Village is kind of rock and roll.
09:01It's kind of gritty here.
09:02You know what I mean?
09:03Yeah.
09:04When Jay and I were walking around, we tended to gravitate towards graffiti and industrial textures.
09:09I want to do a look with a jacket and a look with a hot pair of super elaborate pen.
09:15I feel like Jay is a little bit scattered.
09:18I want to use lines to create texture.
09:20I want to do a short jumper.
09:22I guess I'm having a hard time visualizing what goes on top.
09:26I'm just hoping that we can just get through it.
09:32All right, designers.
09:33Each team will design two looks.
09:35So your 30 minutes starts right now.
09:38Just, okay.
09:39These belong.
09:40This gets weird.
09:41Amy and I are a little stumped by fabric shopping at Moons.
09:45There's two of us, which means that we kind of both have to approve on the fabrics.
09:48It sort of, in a way, cuts your time in half.
09:51Let's go darker.
09:52Same, same.
09:53It should be indigo.
09:54We decide that he is going to do the denim day look.
09:56So, of course, the first swatch of denim he has is black.
10:00That's blue?
10:01So I make him change that.
10:03That's blue.
10:04How do you feel about that?
10:05I'm good with this.
10:06It is beautiful.
10:07Hearing the word China, you think of red and gold.
10:10However, I think that the greater challenge for us is to look a little deeper.
10:14And not just be so literal.
10:16I'm a little concerned about Anthony's textile choices just because he's had some trouble
10:21in the past.
10:22We just need to be careful about how we use it because it could be really cheesy.
10:25All right, everyone.
10:26Time is up.
10:28That's it.
10:29Thank you, Mood.
10:37Wow.
10:38It's palpable that it's a much smaller group in here.
10:41We have until midnight tonight and precious little time tomorrow for this challenge.
10:45And we have only the creme de la creme here.
10:48Make no assumptions that the team leader will go home.
10:51Thank you very much.
10:52Three of them.
10:54I'm going to kind of slash and spread this.
10:57Maybe spread it to like maybe five inches.
10:59Jay is taking charge of the day look.
11:02These pants are definitely not something I would design.
11:05But I can't really say anything because he's the leader.
11:08He makes the final decisions.
11:09Maybe I can do something like let this come out.
11:11Oh, yeah, yeah.
11:12Make it more like evening evening.
11:13For the evening look, I'm going to do a throwback to the classic Harlem Billie Holiday,
11:18the Cotton Club, that kind of vibe.
11:22Dude, I got to do it.
11:24The main thing that I want to achieve as a designer is to be very current.
11:28You got to stop seeing an eye and say we, because we have to, because it can't be about one person.
11:33I am the leader.
11:34I think that in this particular case, though, Maya has already admitted that she has control issues.
11:40I'm, you know, I'm a subtle, I have a subtle controlling aspect of my personality.
11:45I cannot afford to be scared of anything at this point.
11:48I'm starting to think that this print is, like, not good.
11:54Basically, it would be pleated here, sunburst, cut out.
11:57It would be pleated here, sunburst, cut out.
12:00My dress has a lot of detail. Amy's dress has a lot of detail.
12:03We're just going to dive right in.
12:05I have about a million pleats to make by hand.
12:09Let's just make this idea as complicated as possible.
12:14It's going to be a struggle.
12:16Oh, shoot.
12:19Coming up on Project One Way.
12:21Jay hasn't even started a tank top yet.
12:24I'm literally, at this point, using every technique I know how to do on this one garment.
12:29Whip.
12:35We're going to be creating two looks, a day look and an evening look, based on one of four neighborhoods.
12:44Ooh.
12:45It's like a Chinese dragon.
12:47Maya is working on the day look, and I am working on the evening look.
12:51I was thinking, like, bigger. Like, this big.
12:54In the evening look, we will be creating this three-dimensional diamond inspired by the dragon tissue lantern.
13:02I think that they should just sort of trail off.
13:05She can't seem to focus enough on her own garment.
13:08Once we have all of these, we can be artsy and have some artistic license about where to place them.
13:14She's even gone as far to make a comment that, I'm just concerned about these looks because I'm such an artist.
13:19But it's kind of like, at this point, everybody on this show is an artist.
13:24If I, like, just hand-wrote some, I think we've got enough going on.
13:28Yeah, we should just stick to the details.
13:30Seth Aaron works really, really fast.
13:33He doesn't sketch a lot, so I have to keep a critical eye on what he brings in.
13:38A little of this, like, with this, you know?
13:41Yeah.
13:42I don't know about the solid yellow, though.
13:44If you turn your head for a minute, he would have added stuff that you kind of didn't discuss.
13:49So we just have to find a happy medium.
13:53We don't really say a whole lot to one another.
13:56We're just sort of in the zone.
13:57I mean, that's pretty normal, actually, for both of us.
14:00We're working very professionally.
14:01I just want to put on a really good show and forget about the fact that she doesn't like me or I don't like her.
14:07Yeah.
14:08You're like, looking good, little nugget.
14:11We are both detail people.
14:13We are both texture people, volume people.
14:16Those things take time to do, and I think that by combining those two volcanic forces, you basically end up with two people who probably cannot complete these looks in time.
14:28Designers, I have Collier Strong with me, and he's here for your makeup consultation.
14:33Hello, hello, hello.
14:34Hey, how are you?
14:36She's my evening girl.
14:37Okay, what part of the city were you doing?
14:39Chinatown.
14:40Okay, so let's shop here at the Studio Secrets wall.
14:42You have primer.
14:43These are some colored golds.
14:45Yes, and I want black on the last one.
14:47Okay.
14:48Use a black liner, and then we'll use a dark brown.
14:50Oh, it looks beautiful.
14:51So I think that her lip could be bold, and I think with the color choices that we're using here, it will easily blend with the nighttime version.
15:00I like it.
15:01And we're doing Carla.
15:03She's going to be wearing our evening look.
15:05Okay, the evening look.
15:06And she's going to be wearing the midnight blue.
15:08What about a smoky sensuality?
15:10Yeah.
15:11So that it just kind of brings the eyelid to life.
15:13Yeah, that's beautiful.
15:14Good.
15:15My lady's going to be wearing our Harlem day look.
15:18Okay.
15:19So a little eyeliner, just a little smudge right at the base of the lash to add density.
15:23Also, something bright but transparent on the lip.
15:27Perfection.
15:31I'm here to check in with you.
15:33Hi, Tim.
15:34How did you gentlemen like Harlem?
15:35I loved it.
15:36I lived there for a while.
15:37I'm a New Yorker.
15:38And I had never been there.
15:39It's the first time there.
15:40It's colorful.
15:41And a lot of denim.
15:42And we incorporated it into a denim two-piece look for our day look.
15:45I'm crazy about this jacket.
15:47The evening look is going to be a modern day Billie Holiday.
15:50We'll just keep the urban edge going.
15:52Yeah, it's definitely an urban edge.
15:53You two are busy.
15:54All these souvenir shops in Chinatown had all these paper dragons, and we made this thing.
16:00I don't even know what you'd call it on the evening look.
16:03It's the evening look.
16:04I'm working on the day look, so the jacket is going to be for Lorena.
16:07What's the textile?
16:08It's this.
16:09This looks so weak.
16:13Yeah.
16:14Compared to the rest of your palette.
16:16Why did you reject the stripe?
16:18I'm just going to ask perfectly bluntly, why couldn't that be the jacket?
16:22It could.
16:23So how are you two doing?
16:24Moving along.
16:25Good.
16:26Yeah.
16:27So what are the pieces you're making for today?
16:29I'm working on a pair of pants, so you'll see like a form fitting and it'll kind of like
16:34poof out here.
16:35Is it possible that Heidi and Nina are going to say what woman wants to look wider there?
16:40It's going to hit her at the right spot.
16:42You're not going to see much fullness from here up.
16:44And what's on top?
16:45We were going to do some kind of like a striped top using black and the red.
16:50And Mila, what are you doing?
16:51I'm doing this jacket and then we're doing a dress underneath out of this groovy fabric.
16:56What is the general silhouette of the dress like and what's the neckline like?
17:00We're still debating that.
17:01We're still talking at this point.
17:02Someone's going home.
17:03Don't look at me.
17:04I can look at any of you.
17:07All right.
17:09Thanks, Tim.
17:10Amy, Jonathan.
17:11Hi, Tim.
17:12For our day wear, we're doing a kind of spin off of a shirt dress.
17:17And Jonathan's working on the wrought iron influence for the evening look.
17:21Yeah.
17:22This dress will actually have panels of my cut work as well as the arcing pleating panels.
17:27Are you at risk of over-designing?
17:32I'm like, we know that probably.
17:35It's not a matter of how much work did you get done and what amount of time.
17:39It's how good is the look.
17:41Designers, I'm going to leave you for the evening and your models will be coming in a little later for fitting.
17:46All right.
17:47Work hard.
17:48Make it work.
17:51Is it overly designed?
17:52Us?
17:54When?
17:55When Tim said the word over-designed, I was like, oh my God.
17:58I mean, I'm literally at this point using every technique I know how to do on this one garment.
18:03He's right.
18:04This could be a carnival.
18:06Wonder if we have enough solid fiber.
18:08My goal is to have the pants done next and then the hat.
18:12So I'm the one that's behind.
18:14I got to get this together to try on her.
18:16Oh, that's right.
18:17They're coming soon.
18:18The problem that Anthony is running into is that the details on the evening dress are all completely hand-stitched.
18:23And there are a million diamond-shaped designs that have to be tacked on.
18:31Hi.
18:32Oh my God.
18:33Oh my God.
18:34I'm so nervous now.
18:35I want to finish this.
18:37You always finish.
18:38You're a good time to finish.
18:39But I have a partner.
18:41I've been praying not to have teams.
18:43It's ridiculous.
18:45You have to pretend you're nice to each other.
18:48It was so funny.
18:49I saw the friends.
18:50He'll be right in.
18:51He's just putting the last seam on.
18:52I've never put a dress together this freaking fast in my life.
18:55I'm not even ready.
18:56This is the first time ever.
19:00Wow, they actually fit really good.
19:02The pants that I made for Brittany fit her well.
19:04The poof on the side doesn't look as bad as Tim had anticipated.
19:08So I'm really excited.
19:09I can't wait to finish these pants.
19:11So the hem is shorter in the back than it is in the front.
19:16Step.
19:17Oh, is it that part?
19:18I cut it like it had the stretch, and I cut it the wrong way.
19:21The jacket goes on.
19:22She gets right to that point, and it stops.
19:24And I'm all like, well, that's the point.
19:26It needs to be cut.
19:29I was like, what?
19:30So I pull it off her, and I just cut them off.
19:33She freaks out.
19:34Yeah, I see, because I want it to hit here.
19:37It's done, done.
19:38Put it on her.
19:39Fits perfectly.
19:40Puffs on, we're good.
19:41Bye.
19:42Bye.
19:45I'm a little nervous about the time, I have to say.
19:48Out of the corner of my eye, I see that Jay hasn't even started a tank top yet.
19:52I'm just worried that we would end up in the bottom if Jay's look isn't complete.
19:57Jay and Mila?
20:01I don't mean to laugh.
20:02It's not professional.
20:04It's not professional.
20:05Mila and Jay as a team, first of all, was set up by Emilio because he's naughty, naughty,
20:10naughty boy.
20:11I really am a nice guy, really.
20:14If you really get to know me, let's just say it's working as planned.
20:22Is it hot in here or am I just not going to finish?
20:24Yeah, this is the first time I've seen Jonathan struggle with time, so I am a little concerned
20:29because, you know, we were hoping for one of us to finish earlier and possibly help the
20:32other one.
20:33I don't think that's going to happen at this point.
20:35I am cutting this open work cut work until my fingers are bleeding.
20:39It's getting sloppier by the minutes.
20:41I'm just trying to get it done.
20:43It's spiraling out of control at this point.
20:45Did you say one minute?
20:47Maya, watch those five minutes.
20:48That's wrong.
20:49That time up there's wrong.
20:50We're .
20:56Coming up on Project One Life.
20:57What the hell is Amy and Jonathan building in that corner?
21:01There's no way that I can get this done.
21:03Jonathan?
21:04Amy?
21:05This is the most horrifying experience of my life.
21:18Oh, Jonathan, how do you feel this morning?
21:19Disgusting.
21:20I honestly don't know if I can physically so fast enough to do all the things that I need
21:26to do.
21:27I am hurting this morning.
21:29Oh, my God.
21:30I don't know how I'm going to get it done, honestly.
21:33Yeah.
21:34Down to the nitty gritty here.
21:40We shall leave as three and return as three.
21:45I'm so nervous about the runway show because I'm feeling right now like there's no way that
22:00I can get this done.
22:02Do triangles here.
22:04We have a lot to do, and I'm not sure if it's going to get done.
22:08Are you serious?
22:09Yeah.
22:10I think we sort of want to stay away from asymmetrical designs, but...
22:13Right, this is when your control issues are probably to come back and buy.
22:17I'm a little worried about the look being mostly black.
22:21Chinatown is so colorful, but we didn't want to go too literal with it.
22:25Good morning, designers.
22:26Good morning, Sam.
22:27Each design team will have an hour to send their models to the Garnier Hair Salon and
22:32the L'Oreal Paris Makeup Room.
22:34You know the drill on the blue fly wall.
22:37Style these looks so that they are each wow moments.
22:41All right.
22:43Make it work.
22:49I love it.
22:50The daytime looks a little evening.
22:53I'm very concerned about making sure that that comes across as sophisticated and not old
22:59grandmamma.
23:01Cool, eh?
23:02I feel like my outfit is looking great, but I can't believe how ill-fitting this tank top
23:08is that Jay made, and I just know that it's not going to be good on the runway.
23:13What the hell is Amy and Jonathan building in that corner?
23:22And I don't think they're going to have the time to finish this, so I think that's going
23:26to be a little bit of bloodshed there.
23:33So you have the Martin made Billy Holiday, and then the yellow with the sheer.
23:38I do.
23:39Cool.
23:41You know, I really don't want to have to place blame, but when the judges ask who did
23:42what, I'm going to make sure that they know what I'm doing.
23:43I'm going to make sure that they know what I've done.
23:44I'm a little bit worried that Mila is going to throw me under the bus.
23:45Then I'm going to have to do a little bit of a kind of, kind of, a devilman care up to
23:48definitely a big cast.
23:49Yeah.
23:50Yeah.
23:51Good job.
23:53Good job.
23:54Good job.
23:55Good job.
23:56Good job.
23:57Good job.
23:58Good job.
23:59Good job.
24:00Good job.
24:01Good job.
24:02No.
24:03Good job.
24:04You know, I really don't want to have to place blame, but when the judges ask, who did
24:08who did what, I'm gonna make sure
24:09that they know what I've done.
24:11I'm a little bit worried that Mila's gonna
24:13throw me under the bus, then I'm gonna have
24:14to defend myself.
24:17Designers and models, this is it.
24:20Please follow me, we're going down the doorway.
24:26Sit there, you have a thread.
24:27Oh, we'll get it, we'll get it back.
24:31I am on my hands and knees, sewing Holly into her dress.
24:34Amy's trimming things, it's unbelievable.
24:37Jonathan, Amy.
24:39This was the most horrifying experience of my life.
24:43Coming up on Project Runway.
24:45It just doesn't look polished.
24:46I mean, this for me is an eyesore.
24:48I got sidetracked by the ducks.
24:59Welcome to the runway.
25:01As you know in fashion one day you're in,
25:03and the next day you're out.
25:05There are eight of you here, and after tonight
25:07there will be seven.
25:09For this challenge you worked in teams.
25:12We sent you out into the streets of New York City
25:14to find inspiration in one of four very different neighborhoods.
25:19Okay, let's meet the judges.
25:21First, sitting in for Michael Kors, we have Francisco Costa,
25:25women's creative director for Calvin Klein Collection.
25:28Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
25:32Fashionable model and actress, Molly Sims.
25:36We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
25:41One of you will be named the winner.
25:43And one of you will be out.
25:47Let's start the show.
25:48I'm excited about the day look.
25:58I really feel confident in it.
26:00I think it's different, and I think it's unique,
26:03and it'll stand out.
26:04For a team challenge, I think we did great.
26:06I've never seen any detailing like that on a dress,
26:13so the fact that we have come up with this new approach
26:17was very interesting,
26:18and I thought that it was a very avant-garde approach
26:20to the evening look.
26:23The pants are amazing on her.
26:28They just look so great.
26:30I'm so proud of myself.
26:31The top is a little problematic.
26:33That's the only part I'm worried about,
26:35but it looks good on the runway,
26:37so I think we'll be okay.
26:44I'm very happy with the boldness
26:47and the statement that it makes.
26:50She's working it.
26:51She's giving a little edge to her walk,
26:53and I think it looks great.
27:00I think that there are definitely aspects in there
27:02that are specific to my aesthetic.
27:04The pleating, gradating color are very me.
27:08Both the garments are very cohesive in color story,
27:11and I think that's a really strong point.
27:13Seeing my evening look on the runway, I feel a lot better.
27:23I feel like we were better at bringing the evening look
27:27to a good place, and I feel like we kind of took
27:30a really unique spin on the Upper East Side.
27:32In all my design work, one of my key elements is I want to make the wow factor.
27:42I want people to remember it two weeks from now, two months from now.
27:46It's just everything that I want it to be, and Valeria definitely knows how to make it look its best.
27:53She's just gliding.
28:00It just looks amazing, sophisticated, smart, beautifully made.
28:05Our outfits surpassed our vision.
28:09I think we just have a home run.
28:11We hit it out the park on this one.
28:15If I call your name, please step forward.
28:17Jay and Leela.
28:19Amy and Jonathan.
28:21Your teams have the lowest scores.
28:24We're going to talk to the teams with the highest scores first,
28:27and then I'm going to bring you back.
28:29So you can leave the runway. Thank you.
28:35Anthony, Maya, Emilio, Seth Aaron.
28:39Let's bring out your models.
28:45Emilio, you were the team leader.
28:47Well, our experience was Harlem.
28:49And for our day look, we wanted to do a denim look,
28:52and we accented it with the gold stitching.
28:56And for our evening look, we wanted then to represent
28:59the classic old school Harlem of modern day Billie Holiday.
29:04I have to say I'm in love with both pieces.
29:08Thank you. Thank you.
29:09And I love all the details.
29:10It looks impeccable, and they also relate.
29:13Initially, I had a little question,
29:16because I thought the gown perhaps would go a little sexier and shorter,
29:19but it really held up together really well,
29:21because it's rather sophisticated, both outfits.
29:24And if you want to be sexier, you just unzip that zipper a little higher.
29:28Right.
29:29You can make it shorter and shorter.
29:30No, absolutely.
29:31And who did what in terms of the...
29:33I did this, and I did this.
29:35And he did that.
29:36Since we wanted to do a denim look,
29:38I know Seth Aaron is so strong in that area.
29:41What I brought to the table was...
29:43Color.
29:44Color, new for him.
29:45So I wanted to make sure that he was able to work in his element,
29:48but I wanted to bring in a little of my touch, which is color.
29:51I thought it was very smart of you, Emilio, to make her wear a print,
29:56bring this yellow in.
29:58I think sometimes, Seth, you go a little overboard with the detailing.
30:03You know, there's a lot of piping on this, there's the collar,
30:06there's the buttons, there's the tails.
30:09Had you taken some of those elements off, this would have been a more tasteful look.
30:15Okay.
30:16I loved it.
30:17I loved a bit of color.
30:19I love the hardware.
30:20I love a great zipper.
30:21I love the gold.
30:22Having something also a little off, like the one earring with the hat, it's good.
30:26She's our fly girl from Harlem.
30:28So how was it working together?
30:32We had fun.
30:33It was...
30:34I love Seth Aaron.
30:35We were...
30:36We just meshed.
30:37Anthony, you were the team leader.
30:40Tell us about your two looks.
30:41We were allowed to travel to Chinatown, which I had never gone...
30:46Never been there before in my life.
30:48So initially, I got sidetracked by the ducks hanging in the window.
30:51However, one of the first inspirations that...
30:55We don't do that in Georgia, but...
30:58One of the initial inspirations was this tissue lantern,
31:03and they were dragons, and that's what inspired this dress, the evening look.
31:07And as far as the daytime look is concerned,
31:10the one thing that we really collaborated on and celebrated together
31:13was like the lines and the structure of the buildings.
31:16And the pagoda.
31:18Well, I think this was a really great collaboration.
31:22I like the fact that you did those little details in red,
31:25and then it picks up with the red of her lips.
31:28I like the subtle detail of the pagoda shape on the jacket,
31:33without screaming, this is China.
31:35Here, it looks beautiful.
31:38I love the origami.
31:39I love that three-dimensional effect that it has.
31:42But I wish that I would have seen a little more color in the detail.
31:46I can see a dragon in this kind of work that you've done here,
31:51but it's more subtle.
31:52I love the day look more.
31:54I love the sleeve.
31:56The hair and the makeup is right on.
31:58I think you explore that in the best way.
32:00You made it also very urban.
32:02The work is really beautiful, and it's really well made.
32:05What was it like working together?
32:07I thought, like, I was going to drive her crazy because she's so quiet,
32:10but the one good thing about Maya, don't let that pretty face fool you.
32:13If she doesn't like something or she wants to change something,
32:15she will surely let you know.
32:17Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
32:20You can leave the runway.
32:26Okay, let's bring out the designers with the lowest scores.
32:35Amy, you were the team leader.
32:36Please tell us about your inspiration.
32:38Our neighborhood was the Upper East Side.
32:40There was a beautiful brick building that had very peachy tones
32:44and a very repetitive pattern, and that's where we drew the color palette
32:48for the day wear look and the lines of pleating.
32:51And for our evening wear look, we were inspired by the raw iron gates and doors,
32:56and Jonathan did his beautiful cut work.
32:58How is it working together?
33:00We love working together.
33:01Yeah.
33:02I have a great respect for Amy's design sensibility,
33:05and she the same way for me.
33:08Yeah.
33:09The problem that I have with this day wear look,
33:13it just doesn't look polished.
33:16I agree.
33:17I, um, the day look, that is a really hard color to wear.
33:21I didn't really get the inspiration of the Upper East Side with the day look.
33:24Perhaps it was a white shirt, you know, and flat, and a great narrow straight leg.
33:30This, for me, is an eyesore.
33:32I think it is quite ugly, to be honest.
33:35The nighttime look, I don't find as bad as the daytime look,
33:39but it's also, it's very, very busy.
33:42Nighttime look is a little more sophisticated.
33:44You see more of a workmanship, and it's more successful.
33:47I love the work in front, but I think the panels really killed it,
33:52because all of a sudden it looks...
33:53Heavy.
33:54Heavy, and it makes it look cheap.
33:57Jay, you were the team leader.
33:59Tell us about your two designs.
34:01We have the Lower East Side as our, um, neighborhood.
34:04We both just kind of gravitated to the boldness of the graffitis
34:08and the texture, um, that they're on.
34:12This is the daytime look, and this is the nighttime look.
34:15I love this nighttime look.
34:17I, I particularly like that you did the red hose and boots.
34:21It looks fantastic, styling-wise.
34:23And I can see the lines of that inspiration,
34:26but I am very disappointed with the day look.
34:29I think the top looks like a leotard.
34:32It's a tank top, but it's not even a tank top that is well made.
34:38And I also have a problem with the fit on the top.
34:40I mean, her boobs are just kind of sort of floating around in there.
34:43The pants, I get the fact that you were going for a really cool pant,
34:47but I don't think that was successful either.
34:50It's interesting, because I see more of a synergy.
34:52I think the pants and the top are very much each side,
34:55and, you know, there's something quite cool about it,
34:57being, not being perfect.
34:58But that tank is, no.
35:00It tanked.
35:01It tanked, tanked.
35:03What was it like working together?
35:05We worked, I think, professionally.
35:10Like, things just kind of, like, organically came together,
35:13and this is what we've achieved.
35:17Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
35:19I'm going to have a little chat, and then I call you back.
35:22You can leave the runway.
35:32Okay, let's talk about the designers with the lower scores.
35:35Let's talk about Amy and Jonathan.
35:37You know, I had high hopes for Amy,
35:39but she gets too caught up in the technical
35:41and doesn't see the big picture.
35:43The vibe of the Upper East Side did not come across.
35:46No.
35:47It looked very vintage.
35:48It looked Lower East Side.
35:49Yeah.
35:50In the 50s.
35:51It really would have been better if it actually was a dress,
35:54because it was too tight in the waist.
35:56That's what makes her look like an umbrella.
35:58The night look.
35:59Definitely better than the daytime look,
36:01but I still thought that it was a bit overworked.
36:03There was a simplicity to it.
36:05It obviously needed to be reworked.
36:07Without the panels.
36:08Yeah.
36:11Let's move on to Jay and Mila.
36:13I had a problem with the day look.
36:16It was a tank, and it looked ill-fitting,
36:20badly made.
36:21The pant was overworked.
36:23I was really surprised to see this from Jay.
36:26It almost seems as if Mila was the team leader,
36:31instead of Jay.
36:32You know, Mila is all about structure, lines.
36:36She loves black and white.
36:37The executioner was impeccable.
36:39Okay, let's move on to the designers with the highest scores.
36:46Should we start with Anthony and Maia?
36:48This was a very subtle and gentle inspiration on China.
36:52Subtle, but with a lot of great design in it.
36:54Great design.
36:55Not boring.
36:56I could see their vision.
36:57Yes.
36:58Both looks are definitely sophisticated.
36:59The daytime is also sophisticated.
37:01The daytime I would wear the jacket?
37:03Yes.
37:04I love the little touch of red,
37:06the little detail of the pagoda shape on the jacket.
37:09And the sleeve was great.
37:11It was great.
37:12It was really well thought of,
37:14really very nice and very subtle.
37:20Let's move on to Emilio and Seth Aaron.
37:22Great pieces.
37:23It has a great attitude.
37:25It's got a great vibe.
37:26I love the injection of color,
37:28the injection of print,
37:30the bag.
37:31Everything worked.
37:32But they really tried to make it work together as a team.
37:35And there is this zippers you just get.
37:38It's one story.
37:39So it's very mature, I find.
37:41You know, I think they're very sophisticated.
37:43And I think they really balanced each other here.
37:46Yeah, no, they did.
37:47In the best way.
37:48They seem very strong individuals,
37:50but they worked very well together.
37:52You know, the evening dress was really,
37:54that's what disappointed me.
37:55Yes, it was well made,
37:56but I know that Emilio can do more.
37:59I know it.
38:04Are we confident that we made the right decision?
38:06Yes.
38:07Okay, let's bring them back up.
38:14The eight of you represent the best and the worst.
38:17One of you will be named the winner,
38:19and one of you will be out.
38:29The eight of you represent the best and the worst.
38:32One of you will be named the winner,
38:34and one of you will be out.
38:36Emilio, congratulations.
38:37You are the winner of this challenge.
38:39Seth Aaron, you are also the winner of this challenge.
38:43We appreciate the maturity of design and the way you translated your inspirations.
38:46It was clear also that you worked well together to show off both of your talents.
38:48You're both in and can leave the runway.
38:49Wow, thank you so much.
38:53A double win.
38:54It was a project runway first time, so not only did we both get a win under our belt,
39:00but we also made a little project runway history.
39:01Woo!
39:02I'm happy.
39:03There's more designing to be done.
39:04Double win.
39:05Anthony and Maya, well done.
39:06You're in.
39:07You can leave the runway.
39:14A double win.
39:15It was a project runway first time, so not only did we both get a win under our belt,
39:19but we also made a little project runway history.
39:22Woo!
39:23I'm happy.
39:24There's more designing to be done.
39:26Double win.
39:27Anthony and Maya, well done.
39:32You're in.
39:33You can leave the runway.
39:40Mila.
39:41Jonathan.
39:42You're in.
39:43You can leave the runway.
39:51Jay.
39:52Your tank top was ill-fitting and mismatched with those pants, which were also questionable
39:57in terms of color, construction, and fabric choice.
40:01Amy, your strange shirt dress was a disappointment.
40:05From the color to the dowdy cut, it was bad retro.
40:09You got lost in a concept without executing it well.
40:14Amy.
40:15Amy.
40:16You're out.
40:17That means, Jay, you're in.
40:18You can leave the runway.
40:19Okay.
40:20Thank you for the opportunity.
40:26That means, Jay, you're in.
40:27You can leave the runway.
40:28Okay.
40:33Thank you for the opportunity.
40:42I'm absolutely proud of myself for how far I've come.
40:45I wish I could jam-pack all of my life with these kinds of experiences and this kind of
40:50quick growth.
40:51Such a good fit.
40:52Oh, I'm not going to miss you.
40:54Hey, lady.
40:56Amy.
40:57It's really hard to watch Amy go home.
40:59The only thing that's saving me from being completely overwhelmed by this is that she's so strong.
41:05She's just a wonderful person.
41:09You are an incredibly talented designer.
41:11Thank you, Tim.
41:13You're all right.
41:14We love you.
41:15Okay.
41:16Bye, you guys.
41:17Bye, girl.
41:18So, Emilio, Seth Aaron, congratulations to you.
41:24As a designer, I really like to try new things and I don't want to change my perspective
41:28because somebody, you know, doesn't like something.
41:30I want to stay true to myself.
41:32I wasn't ever scared to make something even though I knew it was a huge risk and I'm proud
41:37of that quality.
41:39Next time on Project Runway.
41:41You will be doing something that every fashion designer dreams about but seldom realizes.
41:47Wow.
41:48I see looks of fear.
41:49Here we go.
41:50Ah!
41:51I love it!
41:52Oh, my God.
41:53Oh, my God.
41:54It's now or never.
41:55I'm not going to have a second chance.
41:57Think, think, think, think, think, think.
41:59I feel like his taste is questionable.
42:01It's a pretty basic silhouette.
42:03I do not listen to Tim whether he likes it or not.
42:06It's too conceptual.
42:07It's too weird.
42:08It's like a disco straitjacket.
42:10Full on catastrophe.
42:12It's probably a fantastic one.
42:13You don't want to be silly.
42:14It's definitely a fantastic one.
42:15It's fantastic, I love it.
42:16You're fantastic.
