00:01Previously on Project Runway.
00:03For this challenge, you will use the Getty Center
00:06as a source of inspiration for a design of your choice.
00:10Althea is sort of like King Kong with the table space.
00:12I think she's just out for a lot of this.
00:14Oh, yeah.
00:15People are starting to pick at each other.
00:17I just think it's silly.
00:18Three of you will be going to Fashion Week,
00:20and two of you will be out.
00:23Christopher, you're out.
00:27Irina, you're going to Fashion Week.
00:30Carole Hannah, you're going to Fashion Week.
00:34Althea, we do appreciate that you take risks.
00:38You're going to Fashion Week.
00:40Jordana, I'm sorry.
00:42That means you're out.
00:44This is Project Runway.
00:47The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread
00:50in Marie Claire magazine,
00:52a Paris vacation courtesy of Avian,
00:54and $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to start it online.
00:59Congratulations.
01:02The three of you are going to New York Fashion Week.
01:15You have quite a challenge ahead of you.
01:17You have to create a 12-piece collection to show at Bryant Park.
01:21And I'm going to give each of you $9,000 in the next few months
01:27to design your collection at home.
01:29Now, let's bring someone out that you have all grown very close to.
01:33It's a familiar face.
01:38Designers, I am more proud of you than I can adequately express.
01:42I mean, you're going to Bryant Park.
01:45It's fashion's biggest stage.
01:47And I will be checking in on you and the development of your collections
01:50within the next couple of months, all right?
01:52I wish all of you good luck, and I see you at Bryant Park.
01:55Bye.
01:56What are we going to do tonight?
01:58I don't know.
01:59What do you think?
02:00I think we should go party, party.
02:03Come, Tim, let's go!
02:08How's it going, Irina?
02:18Good.
02:19There's definitely been this tension between Irina and I.
02:21Ever since Irina called out on the runway
02:24that I was, like, copying her without ever talking to me about it.
02:28Who had the first idea of these big...
02:30These big...
02:31There has been a little bit of, you know,
02:34resemblance of things in the workroom.
02:36I'm not going to forgive and forget.
02:38I forgive, but I'm not going to forget.
02:40Good.
02:41Have a safe trip.
02:42You too.
02:43You too.
02:44I think Carole Hanna and Althea, they are intimidated.
02:46They know I've done well.
02:47So they are expecting me to take the big guns to Bryant Park,
02:51but I'm bringing a tank.
02:52I'm taking the whole army with me if I have to.
03:01I'm traveling to check on the collections of our three finalists.
03:05First, I'm visiting Carole Hannah Whitfield,
03:08who recently moved to the suburbs of New York City
03:10to work on her collection.
03:17Carole Hannah.
03:18Hi.
03:19How are you?
03:20What a day.
03:21Come inside.
03:22How are you?
03:23What a white knuckle trip.
03:24I know.
03:25For the past couple of months, I actually moved from Charleston,
03:29South Carolina up to Huntington, New York into my friend Ellen's house.
03:34I feel like I can be a lot more creative and productive up here
03:37than I can be in Charleston.
03:39Look at this collection.
03:40Wow.
03:41Let's go.
03:42On my move up here, I drove for about a week.
03:45And my friend who works at Duke University gave me a tour of their campus.
03:49Uh-huh.
03:50It's beautiful.
03:51And it's gorgeous.
03:52I love the architecture.
03:53And it was the middle of the night, and the lights were...
03:55It was just so ethereal and beautiful and...
03:59So it just hit you.
04:00Yeah.
04:01One of the things that I liked about what I was inspired by,
04:04it had this very kind of whimsical, almost fairytale feel to it.
04:08Mm-hmm.
04:09It's fun.
04:10It's feminine, but it's not like so frou-frou.
04:12No, it's not.
04:13I agree with you.
04:14The sophistication here.
04:15Yeah.
04:16I'm gonna do a simple band.
04:17Can I be blunt?
04:18Yes, please.
04:19I'm not in favor of it.
04:20Okay.
04:21You're losing the sophistication with that?
04:22Yeah.
04:23Yeah.
04:24And it's becoming a little like an ice skater.
04:25You know me.
04:26I like things.
04:27I like to add things, so...
04:28I know you do.
04:29That's why I'm telling you, don't do that.
04:30It's good to...
04:31Yeah.
04:32We've gotta talk about this.
04:33Okay.
04:34What is that?
04:35It's a little...
04:36And why?
04:37It's a little cave.
04:38I like it.
04:39Can you put it back on?
04:40Um, yes.
04:41And it's not finished either.
04:42I just think it looks so matronly.
04:44Really?
04:45I think you just aged her 30 years.
04:47Oh.
04:48So tell me about this piece.
04:49This is...
04:50It's basically a simple tank.
04:52And it's over a pant?
04:53It is over a pant.
04:54I have made pants.
04:55That's great.
04:56On Project Runway, most of my designs were dresses or evening wear.
05:00But I really wanted to show a little more versatility.
05:03Doing some separates and pants and shorts and jackets.
05:07With a little bit of evening flair.
05:10No, I think you've done a lot of pushing.
05:12Okay.
05:13And a lot of...
05:14You've done a lot of risk taking.
05:15Good.
05:16There is so much work left to do.
05:17It's somewhat overwhelming.
05:19This is going to be...
05:21Tough.
05:22We have a little surprise for you.
05:23Yeah?
05:24Um, my family has flown in.
05:26Oh!
05:27And we're going to treat you to a traditional Southern meal.
05:29Oh, that's great.
05:30And first you actually have to lend a little hand in the kitchen.
05:33I want...
05:34I'd love to.
05:35I love a kitchen.
05:36Okay, good.
05:38Hi, Mama.
05:39Hi.
05:40Hi.
05:41Hi.
05:42My parents and my sister flew in from South Carolina to come visit and to meet Tim.
05:47We're going to make biscuits?
05:48You are.
05:49You're going to make Southern biscuits.
05:50How exciting.
05:51And if they bomb, they're going to be your fault.
05:52It's our fault, so we can't let that happen.
05:53Oh!
05:54My family is extremely understanding and supportive and encouraging and I'm just really grateful
05:59to have that.
06:00This is such a wild journey.
06:02It's kind of interesting to see Carol going through this process.
06:05My mother was a wonderful seamstress.
06:07I used to watch her.
06:08Oh!
06:09For hours.
06:10And then I made little doll clothes and she would tell me how to make them.
06:14That's how I learned construction pretty much.
06:16Tiny.
06:17Yeah.
06:18Tiny.
06:19It's the same principle.
06:21I was a really awkward kid.
06:24I had like long monkey arms and braces and big ugly glasses.
06:29Okay, lunch is ready.
06:30I gained a lot of confidence through making things for myself and then making things for
06:34other people and that's really one of the things I love about fashion is that it changes
06:39the way you see yourself and the way that other people see you and I love it.
06:44When Carol Handler was a little bitty thing, I would have been very determined.
06:48She goes out to accomplish what she looks for.
06:52I just, I love that for her.
06:54Thanks, Daddy.
06:55I'm not a fashion school graduate.
06:57I'm a self-taught designer.
06:59Sometimes it's a little intimidating to think about the fact that everyone else has been
07:03formally trained, but at the same time when you're just doing it and figuring it out yourself,
07:10I think you learn a lot more.
07:12And you cooked up a great collection.
07:13Well, thank you.
07:14Thank you for the help.
07:15So work hard.
07:16Don't think too much.
07:17Okay.
07:18All right.
07:19Love you.
07:20Love you too.
07:21Get back in.
07:22Get warm.
07:23Be safe.
07:35Next, I'm visiting Irina Shabayeva who's working on her collection right here on the Upper East
07:39side of Manhattan.
07:40Irina?
07:41It's Tim Gunn.
07:42Hi.
07:43Hi, baby.
07:44How are you?
07:45Thanks.
07:46Tim's coming to visit today and I'm super excited.
07:51His opinion means a lot to me.
07:53Irina?
07:54How are you?
07:55Hi, Tim.
07:56How are you?
07:57Hi, sweetheart.
07:58I'm great.
07:59Welcome.
08:00I'm thrilled to be here with you.
08:02Who's this?
08:03This is Princess.
08:04Say hi.
08:05Princess.
08:06Hi.
08:07Princess is talking.
08:08I don't know.
08:09She's saying hello.
08:10Hi, Princess.
08:11Great.
08:12I can't wait to see the collection.
08:13I'm a little bit nervous about Tim's visit, but I have to say I'm confident because I'm
08:17really saying what I want to say with this collection.
08:20I really wanted to do something that was a little bit more personal to who I am and where
08:24I'm from and I automatically thought of Coney Island because I grew up near there.
08:30Like that's what we did for fun, my sister and I.
08:32So it's sort of a celebration of growing up in New York and more specifically Coney Island.
08:36It is.
08:37It's sort of my like thank you to New York for being so good to me.
08:40My family's from the Republic of Georgia.
08:43My parents moved my sister and I to Brooklyn, to New York really, to achieve the New York
08:50dream.
08:51So I had this idea of to do it like under these sort of really elegant looks.
08:56I really wanted to do these very special t-shirts, almost like a postcard wish you were
09:01there.
09:02So tell me about how you're going to use these.
09:03I was thinking of having almost like a sort of a boyfriend t-shirt where it's a little
09:09bit looser.
09:10This is what I love about the fact that you're a risk taker.
09:12It could go either way.
09:13Right.
09:14And I don't think you want to play it safe.
09:15And look at this knit.
09:16The knit, I'm doing a few knits.
09:19Obviously these are hand knits.
09:21Obviously.
09:22I'm excited about that.
09:23They're not cut and sew.
09:24No.
09:25I don't know.
09:26I don't know.
09:27I don't know.
09:28I don't know.
09:29I don't know.
09:30What are you wearing this with?
09:31This is key.
09:32I don't really like the knit.
09:33I don't either.
09:34It reminds me of a sisal rug.
09:35I know.
09:36Tim's not liking the fur I picked out.
09:39And I'm like, well, the edges are going to be clean and finished.
09:41I'm just sort of like tacking it on to get a gist of the shape.
09:44Each of these is a separate panel.
09:46How do you get the body?
09:47How do you get the shape?
09:48I'm going to do some Corsair in it and then just pleat every piece.
09:52Here's the challenge for you.
09:54And it's just something for you to just have bracket in your head.
09:58That it just not look forced.
10:01That it just look as though it's an easy, natural flow.
10:08Tim's reaction wasn't quite what I'd hoped for.
10:10You always hope for it all to be positive.
10:13So I still have some thinking to do about my whole collection.
10:16Bye, princess.
10:17Say bye, baby.
10:18See you later, Irina.
10:19Bye, Tim.
10:20I don't know what Althea's collection is going to look like.
10:22I don't know what Carol Hahn's collection is going to look like.
10:24I know I have a major challenge ahead of me.
10:31Tim's meeting my friends and my family for lunch at one of my favorite restaurants in New York.
10:36I'm especially excited for him to meet my parents who mean the world to me.
10:44How is everybody?
10:45Hi.
10:46Hi.
10:47My parents moved here so I and my sister, of course, could be a success.
10:52So their opinion really means everything.
10:54In a way, I feel like the dreams that they didn't achieve because of, like, the whole move and culture shock.
11:00And they're really sort of counting on my sister and I to do what they didn't have a chance to do.
11:05So you must be very proud parents.
11:07Yes.
11:08I am very proud of her and I always believe that she will become somebody.
11:12My mom has always been very supportive of anything I do.
11:16She actually just gave me free reign to do anything I wanted.
11:20She was always sort of go for your dreams.
11:22She was just like, you know, I know you could do it.
11:24You're hard working and there's no reason why you can't achieve what you want.
11:28She called me a few days ago and she said, Mom, you know, I'm so stressed out.
11:32I'm thinking so much.
11:33I cannot sleep.
11:34I said, you worked so hard so many years, not just one or two years, many years.
11:38I said, you have to win it.
11:40You have no choice.
11:41And Julia, that's what I see it.
11:43I want to assure you, no matter what the outcome of all this will be, Irina's already a winner.
11:48Yeah.
11:49She already is.
11:50And as a mother, I'm a winner too, to have a daughter like her.
11:53Aw.
11:54Really, I am.
11:55Fashion has always been my dream, but my dad hasn't always supported me in it.
11:59And he's very old school.
12:01Like, you know, he doesn't think I could have a real future as a fashion designer.
12:05What about?
12:08Oh, you too.
12:09Aw.
12:10Wow, now I'm thinking favorite.
12:12Winning Project Runway could prove to him that I could do this and be successful at it.
12:16And that would be the greatest feeling to get that approval from my father.
12:21Good luck for you.
12:23Like, father to Laura, good luck today.
12:26Cheers.
12:28Cheers.
12:29To Irina and to the American dream.
12:32Cheers to that.
12:33Cheers to that.
12:34Coming up on Project Runway.
12:36It's too old looking.
12:37Yeah.
12:38She's visiting the Wild West.
12:39Irina, we have an issue.
12:42Finally, I'm visiting Althea Harper, who's working on her collection in Dayton, Ohio.
12:51Yikes.
12:52You gads.
12:53The past couple months, I've decided to stay in Dayton, Ohio.
13:08Although Dayton's not exactly the fashion capital of the world, you know, I thought it's my hometown.
13:14I've got a support system and I can just really focus on this collection and then, you know, I've got plenty of time to get to New York afterwards.
13:23Althea.
13:24Hey.
13:25How are you?
13:26You look fabulous.
13:27Oh, thank you.
13:28So do you.
13:29So much.
13:30I'm so, so happy you're here because, like, I feel like I've just been stuck in this bubble and I need, like, outside opinion.
13:37That's why I'm here.
13:38Okay.
13:39So we'll go through the whole thing, okay?
13:40Cool.
13:41Great.
13:42When I came back, I started watching a lot of, like, sci-fi movies.
13:45I was really inspired by just women in these movies and I just want to take sort of that strong woman and put it into a collection that I could really see a woman today wearing.
13:55The costumes, I think, are really cool, how they're experimenting with shape and things like that and that's sort of where I took off from.
14:01All right.
14:02I'm intrigued.
14:03I want to see more.
14:04Yeah.
14:05Yeah.
14:06So I see the model sort of walking with the pocket.
14:08This is a strong piece.
14:09Yeah.
14:10And seeing what you do with knits, it makes me want to see more.
14:13Okay.
14:14Let's see where this takes us.
14:15I've always wanted to just do, like, a really powerful jacket.
14:18So it's not one piece.
14:19It's not a full length coat.
14:20Right.
14:21Exactly.
14:22So this is a coat.
14:23Like, this is the coat and then...
14:24How long is it?
14:25Is it just to here?
14:26Yeah.
14:27Yeah.
14:28You can't have this whole thing.
14:29It's too old looking.
14:30Yeah.
14:31Yeah.
14:32I mean, it looks really costuming.
14:33I mean, it's either, well, it's Edwardian era, but she's visiting the Wild West.
14:36This can't walk down that Bryant Park runway like this.
14:39Yeah.
14:40Some of the things that he was concerned about were making sure that it's not going to cost you.
14:43You know, you're always just wanting to show everything that you can do, but editing is
14:48definitely a very important step.
14:50You have a lot of thinking to do, but you have a lot of really great work behind you.
14:57But you need to recalibrate your thinking about some of these pieces.
15:00Just don't lose sight of who you are and edit, edit, edit.
15:06I'm thinking, you know, I can really create something that's a lot more unique and make
15:10a bigger statement than I really could have just with like some dress that wasn't really
15:14turned out too well.
15:15There it is.
15:16Here, don't slip.
15:17Oh, yeah.
15:18Don't slip.
15:19Here.
15:20This is adorable.
15:21Here we are.
15:22The Harpers.
15:23Yep.
15:24Hi.
15:25Hi.
15:26Hi.
15:27It's been really great to have such a supportive family and friends because in fashion, everything
15:45can get really catty and it is such a competitive field that to be able to have friends outside
15:51of that has definitely made me a lot stronger and more confident as a designer.
15:55Stuart.
15:56Hi, Stuart.
15:57Oh, you're the boyfriend.
15:58Yeah.
15:59I've heard of that too.
16:00Okay.
16:01So when did you first get interested in fashion?
16:03I don't even know this.
16:04Well, I actually, I mean, I wanted to be an artist when I was younger.
16:08I always drew and everything and then I used to like drawing people, so I was like,
16:12well, I guess drawing clothes on them was the next step.
16:15I remember when Althea was in fifth grade and she said that she wanted to have a sewing
16:20machine for Christmas and we were surprised because we didn't really know where that came
16:24from and so we got her a sewing machine.
16:25I remember like in high school, like we couldn't find anything to wear and she would just like
16:28whip up a top like, well, I'll just sew one, you know.
16:31So.
16:32That's where it begins.
16:33That's true.
16:34Yeah.
16:35No, we knew that Althea would be, her future was in New York, certainly not in Ohio.
16:40Dayton, Ohio to Bryant Park is a really big step, but I am ready to take it.
16:45Very proud of you.
16:46Thank you so much.
16:47You've done an incredible job.
16:48That was one of my big ultimate goals.
16:50So the fact that I'm already here makes the future seem limitless.
16:54Take care.
16:55Work hard.
16:56I know you will.
16:57Oh yeah.
16:58Bye bye.
16:59Bye.
17:00Thanks again.
17:01Hello.
17:02Irina, it's Tim Gunn.
17:03How are you?
17:04Good.
17:05How are you, Tim?
17:06Great, thank you.
17:07However, we have an issue.
17:08I've just learned from the producers and their attorney that the Coney Island images that
17:22are trademarked Brooklyn icons that are designed by someone else, not you.
17:27Therefore, you just don't have the right to incorporate them into your clothing collection.
17:31Okay.
17:32I don't want this to adversely impact your incredible collection in any way.
17:37At the same time, I want you to use it, but with images that are your own.
17:42I have all the fabric, it's just a matter of time at this point.
17:47All right, listen.
17:48Get back to work, and I will see you in a couple of weeks.
17:51Take care, Irina.
17:52Bye bye.
17:53I've been seriously busting my ass for a long time, and I'm tired.
17:56So maybe I'll just do one with the birds.
17:59This is seriously the worst thing that could happen right now.
18:02And I've got 10 days to redo this whole look.
18:05I'll figure something out, see if I could hand paint a Ferris wheel or something.
18:11Or maybe I'll just come up with something completely different.
18:21I'm so excited to be in New York City.
18:23I feel like New York just gives you that pump of energy to keep you motivated, keep you going.
18:28And it's definitely what I needed to get back in to do these final last days before I show my collection.
18:35Showing a collection at Fashion Week is such a huge deal to me because it's really my introduction.
18:40as a designer to the world.
18:47We're showing at Fashion Week what's bigger and better than that.
18:50It's sort of, you know, like the Olympics of fashion.
18:54I'm very confident, but at the same time very nervous.
18:57I feel like my head's going to explode.
18:59Being in Fashion Week is great, but let's face it, what's the point of a competition to win?
19:06Hello.
19:08Hey, lady.
19:09How are you?
19:10I was just looking for people. I'm like, where is everyone?
19:14I didn't even hear you come in. You're like, I guess this is so cute.
19:17Thank you. How are you?
19:19Good, good.
19:20Irene and I left on a little bit of, well, I kind of lost a little bit of respect for her from the whole accusing me of copying her.
19:28And things were a little tense between us.
19:30Have you seen, is Carol here?
19:32Mm-mm. She hasn't come yet.
19:34Okay.
19:39So what else is new?
19:41Um, not much.
19:46I don't trust Irina any farther than I can throw her.
19:49I'm definitely not putting my guard down, and I'm always prepared for her to sort of snap back into how she was.
19:56When we left L.A., I kind of distanced myself from her a little bit, to be quite frank.
20:02It was definitely hard to sort of be in a room with the same people all the time for weeks on end.
20:08I've still managed to sort of pull it together, and I still sort of like them all at the end, which is pretty cool.
20:17I don't know. I'm just, like, anxious to get working.
20:20Oh, yeah.
20:21Like, where's Carol? Bring her in. Let's go.
20:23I know.
20:24I don't know what's going on, but I know something is up, because it's been hours and Carol Hanna hasn't arrived.
20:32Coming up on Project Runway.
20:34You're probably wondering, where is Carol Hanna?
20:36Yeah, we've been waiting for her.
20:37Well, she can't be here today.
20:38Oh, no.
20:39Really?
20:45I don't know. I'm just, like, anxious to get working.
20:47Oh, yeah. Like, where's Carol? Bring her in.
20:49I know.
20:52Who is it?
20:53I'm gone.
20:54Ah!
20:56Look at you two. You're a sight for sore eyes.
20:58You're probably wondering, where is Carol Hanna?
21:00Yeah.
21:01I've been waiting for her.
21:02Poor thing is sick.
21:03Oh, no.
21:04She has a terrible stomach virus, and it's so terrible she can't be here today.
21:09It's contagious.
21:10Oh, no.
21:11Really?
21:12Yeah.
21:13We want her to heal and repair before she's here with you.
21:16Yeah, definitely.
21:17It would have to be, like, death that would keep me back from being here right now, so I can only imagine how bad it is.
21:24Hey, I heard someone sent you some champagne. Who was it?
21:26We're not sure.
21:27All right.
21:28Hello, designers.
21:29Welcome to the Grand Hyatt New York and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
21:33I can't wait to see your collections.
21:35Good luck over the next few days, and I will see you at Bryant Park.
21:38Heidi.
21:39Heidi.
21:40To Fashion Week.
21:41To Fashion Week, to you, and to Carol Hanna getting better.
21:44Yes, definitely.
21:45Cheers.
21:47Oh, my God.
21:48That's horrible.
21:49I feel, I truly feel bad for her.
21:52That's just, like...
21:53Can you imagine?
21:54Like, anyone's worst nightmare.
21:56That's the worst thing that I could think of happening, is to be sick at this time.
22:01But, to be honest, everyone kind of wants you gone in a weird way.
22:05It's a competition, first and foremost.
22:08Why are we telling two people?
22:09If it's just the two of us?
22:11Either we're going to become best friends, or the worst enemy is ever in this thing.
22:17I don't even know where to start.
22:31Okay, the selling room's back here.
22:34It's real exciting getting to the work room, which is amazing.
22:37It's blue, so it's kind of got like a calming color, and it's definitely a lot of space.
22:42Aw, it's so weird seeing Carol Hanna's stuff and not seeing her.
22:46It's so silent.
22:47I know.
22:48Talk, Althea.
22:49Nothing to say.
22:50Aw.
22:51You're the designated talker.
22:52Carol Hanna's here.
22:53Hi.
22:54Oh, my God.
22:55How are you?
22:56Oh, I'm alive.
22:57Wait, are we allowed to hug you?
22:58I wouldn't.
22:59Oh, okay.
23:00Yeah, but it's really good to see you.
23:01How are you feeling?
23:02How are you?
23:03How are you?
23:04Oh, I'm alive.
23:05Wait, are we allowed to hug you?
23:06I wouldn't.
23:07Oh, okay.
23:08Yeah, but it's really good to see you.
23:09How are you feeling?
23:10How are you?
23:11When I first come in, I think there was a little bit of, oh, she made it.
23:15Well, I woke up yesterday at five o'clock in the morning and threw up until eight o'clock
23:22last night.
23:23What exactly did you have?
23:24There's like a stomach virus going around.
23:27Althea said it to you.
23:28Maybe it's just luck, bad luck.
23:30Whatever.
23:31It's just not very good timing.
23:32This is not the ideal situation.
23:35You know, you want to jump into this gung ho and well rested and instead I'm tired and
23:40I don't feel well and I want to go to sleep.
23:43No, it's like the three musketeers.
23:45Just don't get, don't get too close.
23:47Keep your cooties.
23:48I really feel for Carol Hannah.
23:50I mean, if you don't have your health, you have nothing and like all of a sudden nothing
23:54matters.
23:55Good morning, designers.
23:56Hi.
23:57Hi, Carol Hannah.
23:59Welcome.
24:00You feeling better?
24:01A little bit.
24:02Good.
24:03When we were last together as a group, we were in Los Angeles at the Fashion Institute
24:07of Design and Merchandising.
24:09And now here we are in New York and not only in New York, we're just a block from Bryant
24:13Park.
24:14Well, guess what?
24:15I'm going to make a little tour of your collections.
24:17Althea, I'll start with you.
24:18Okay.
24:19You've done a lot of work.
24:21Yeah, no kidding.
24:22Because I worked completely nonstop.
24:25I mean, I will tell you about this.
24:27As an item with these other pieces, this just looks so matron-like.
24:32Yeah.
24:33I mean, if her grandmother were here, maybe the grandmother could wear it.
24:36Take that away.
24:37Right now, I'm just starting to question myself a little bit.
24:40Obviously, there's going to be a little self-doubt at some point and it just seems to be hitting
24:45me right now.
24:46I mean, here's what you have to be mindful of, Althea.
24:49Mm-hmm.
24:50I look at this.
24:51Is this the same customer who's wearing this look?
24:55I made a belt for this.
24:57I mean, if you...
24:58Oh, I wouldn't do that with this.
25:00Yeah, I mean...
25:01No.
25:02Knits, Althea, knits.
25:03Yeah, I took your advice and I just spent a lot of time knitting.
25:07I can tell.
25:08Yeah.
25:09I mean, my intention is not to derail you.
25:11Yeah.
25:12My intention is to get you thinking about cohesion.
25:15Yeah.
25:16This is so fashion-forward and hip, in my thinking, at least.
25:20Yeah.
25:21And this just looks like borderline Hillary Clinton.
25:24Really?
25:25I want to encourage you to rethink that.
25:26Well, your advice, as always, has been fabulous.
25:30Thank you, Althea.
25:31Thank you very much.
25:33Bingo.
25:34It's the same piece.
25:35What?
25:36My navy and your tan?
25:37Yeah, because you copied me.
25:38Yeah.
25:39Mentally?
25:40Althea?
25:41Yeah?
25:42Seriously, what would you do without me?
25:44You're a good memory.
25:45The last thing I want to do is copy from her.
25:48It's kind of like an eye-roller.
25:50You know what I mean?
25:51Just like, shut up.
25:52How are you feeling?
25:53I'm here.
25:54Yeah?
25:55Come see, come saw.
25:56You know, I'm here.
25:57I'm kicking.
25:58So, take me on a tour.
25:59Okay.
26:00There's a couple of things that I have issues with.
26:02One of which is this guy.
26:04I don't like it at all.
26:05Can you take the jacket off?
26:07Yeah.
26:08It's just so simple.
26:10I don't disagree.
26:11I don't think you need that piece either.
26:13I don't hate this thing.
26:14Well, then get rid of it.
26:15Okay, goodbye.
26:16And frankly, given all the detailing in some of these pieces.
26:19Something simple might not hurt.
26:20You need some relief.
26:21Yeah.
26:22Yeah, that's true.
26:23Okay.
26:24And then, by comparison, this is looking like maybe it's not the same customer.
26:28You know what I mean?
26:29Yeah.
26:30So, you have to keep that in mind.
26:31Yeah, that's true.
26:32You don't like that.
26:33No, it's not that I don't like it.
26:35It's more that I'm just thinking about how you could work with this and style it and give
26:38it some youth.
26:39Mm-hmm.
26:40Looking at Carol Hannah's collection, I see that, you know, she's really focused on evening
26:45wear, and she's kind of stepped out the box a little bit with creating some volume and
26:49whatnot into her dresses, but it's still very Carol Hannah.
26:52It's nothing that I'm intimidated by.
26:54So, Irina, talk to me.
26:57Gosh.
26:58Do you...
26:59I can't even begin to tell you how much heartache I gave myself over this collection.
27:03It's so time consuming.
27:04No.
27:05It comes to a point where you just, you know, you kind of...
27:08You're numb.
27:09Exactly.
27:10Yeah.
27:11Oh, which brings me to the t-shirt...
27:12Yeah, what did you do?
27:13Dilemma.
27:14I sort of put down my thoughts about New York.
27:17Okay.
27:18And did the same technique with the burnout and the silk screening.
27:22Reasons to love New York because Madonna's back?
27:24I do like Madonna a lot.
27:27So, color-wise, we're looking at black, black, black.
27:31Irina's collection is black.
27:33There's a lot of black.
27:34It's black, but I sort of mixed materials.
27:37Tim's concerned about not using enough color.
27:40I feel like I still have a lot of, like, thinking to do, which I'll probably be up all night doing.
27:45And the other thing is I really wanted to come up with, like, a new leather pant.
27:49Interesting.
27:50So, where you still have the look, but you also have the comfort.
27:53It's going to be a question of the proportion for me.
27:55Right.
27:56I'm going to need to see them on because right now this is looking a little bit like chaps, you know?
28:01All right.
28:02How are you feeling about time?
28:03I'm just kind of worried about my finale dress.
28:07And then, I don't know, I started working on it.
28:08It just looked, I don't know, just something wasn't working.
28:12Up here with the sequins, it feels very precious.
28:16Yeah.
28:17And very worked.
28:18Right.
28:19Down here, this is feeling very modern.
28:22It just seems like there still is a lot to do.
28:25There's a lot of pieces in my collection that need a lot of work, but nothing that really sticks out to me as much as Irina's dress that's lying on the floor.
28:33There's pins everywhere, and there's probably about 20 yards of hemming.
28:38Does she want to get to that soon?
28:40I don't know.
28:41I really sort of got into this wrapping, braiding, just got a little bit insane with it.
28:47Good God.
28:48You got to go, go, go.
28:50I'm going to leave you alone.
28:51All right, everybody, you have a lot of work to do this week.
28:54You have model casting, you have model fittings, you have a hair and makeup consultation, so use your time here as well as you can.
29:02Okay?
29:03Bye.
29:04I just want to make sure everything looks the way I want it to look, so I can't think back and say, well, I should have done this, or I should have thought harder.
29:15Coming up on Project Runway, think about color.
29:17If it feels like something that you've seen before, take it out.
29:21I disagree with Nina, and I think I'm going to keep it the way it is.
29:25What kind of models are y'all looking for?
29:32There's different dresses that I know I need a certain body type for, you know what I mean?
29:35Different looks.
29:36The pretty kind.
29:37Yeah.
29:38Today we're going to have to pick 11 girls that go with the theme of our collection.
29:43Good.
29:44How are you?
29:45I'm John.
29:46We're going to see a lot of girls just so you have more to choose from.
29:49Yes.
29:50All right, let's do it.
29:51Let's do it.
29:56I liked her.
29:57I did too.
29:58She was actually really interesting.
29:59Where are you from?
30:00I'm from Norway.
30:01I want her.
30:05I liked her a lot.
30:06I'm looking for girls who are definitely young, fresh, confident, have an edge to them.
30:13Let's just go through and start to eliminate.
30:16Nope.
30:17She's a yes for me, for sure.
30:19I did like her.
30:20Monique?
30:21Yeah, I liked her.
30:22She's a beautiful girl.
30:23I found some great girls.
30:24I'm really excited about the models, actually.
30:27I think I'm happy.
30:29I think I'm set.
30:31Okay.
30:32Thank you so much for having us.
30:33Thank you so much.
30:34Yeah, thank you.
30:48Surprise.
30:49Surprise.
30:50Oh, wow.
30:51Hello.
30:52Hey, guys.
30:53I did not expect them to be here.
30:56Not ever.
30:57Part of me was like, oh, no, don't look at anything.
30:59It's not done.
31:00How's it going?
31:01Pretty good.
31:02You excited?
31:03Nervous.
31:04Are you getting nervous or what you're supposed to be?
31:05And that's good, right?
31:06Those are good things.
31:07The two of us just wanted to give you a few tips, a few pointers, if we could.
31:11Advice is always great, especially when it's from Nina and Michael.
31:15What an opportunity to talk to them when they're not grilling us on the runway.
31:19I think it's so important that you make sure that what you show us so exemplifies who you
31:26are as a designer.
31:27If it feels like something else, if it feels like something that you've seen before, take
31:32it out.
31:33Because this show is about you guys.
31:36It's really nice to sit down with them and talk and just really get such honest advice
31:41and feedback.
31:42I have a question.
31:43How about order?
31:44In a weird way, think of it as taking us on a ride.
31:47First look out has to wow us, wake me up, but then let us take a breath.
31:53Down, up, down, up.
31:56Think about color.
31:57An all black collection is a difficult collection to get editorial on.
32:02Self doubt is unfortunately part of the design process and you can keep tweaking it until
32:10the last minute.
32:11I do.
32:12That's good to hear.
32:13The most important thing that all of you have, in addition to talent and brains, is
32:19gut.
32:20So go with your gut.
32:21Good luck ladies.
32:23I disagree with Nina about having an all black collection.
32:26I know she's a judge, but color just doesn't really fit into with what I'm doing in this
32:30collection.
32:31And I think I'm going to keep it the way it is.
32:32I kind of like it.
32:33Good luck.
32:37Oh, that's nice.
32:42Look what you did, Karahana.
32:44I know.
32:45Breaking mannequins already.
32:46You must have your strength back.
32:48I guess so.
32:49I know I'm running out of adrenaline right now and I hope that being sick doesn't interfere
32:55with the work that I have left to do.
32:57I'm a tough person and I can push through pretty much anything, but it's definitely hanging
33:02over my head.
33:17Back to work.
33:18Yeah.
33:19I'm just feeling really stressed today.
33:21We still have to have our fittings, which can create a lot of work.
33:26I don't feel great.
33:29I'm pretty tired.
33:30I'm trying not to think about it.
33:32Just keep plugging away.
33:34Good morning, designers.
33:36Morning.
33:37How is everybody?
33:38Good.
33:39I just want to underscore whichever look your muse model is wearing is the look that will
33:46go back before the judges for the whole question and answer session.
33:50Okay?
33:51And on that note, I am sending in Lisa, Tanisha, and Caleb.
33:55Okay?
33:56I want to put you in like five different things.
34:00Choosing the dress for Lisa to wear is a really important decision.
34:04Let's try something else.
34:05Some of the stuff looks great on Lisa.
34:07Some of the stuff is not made for her.
34:12It's key.
34:13What I'm going to put Kaylin in.
34:15I tried a few things on her and I think I'm going to sort of think it over and try a few
34:19more things.
34:20I'm not sure yet.
34:21Wow.
34:22Really?
34:23That's what I was looking for.
34:24Yeah.
34:25I want to be wow.
34:26So your figure is stunning in that.
34:28It is rippling, but that's just a fit because it's not time enough.
34:31I'm really loving the way that everything's looking on Tanisha.
34:34The only thing I'm a little uncertain about is the leather.
34:37It's a tad big on Tanisha, so it's a question of do I want to mess with trying to take the leather
34:43in.
34:44Love you, babe.
34:53Hey.
34:54Hi.
34:55Hello.
34:56Look who's here.
34:57Come gather round.
34:58I did not expect Heidi to be here today.
34:59You know, on one hand, you're like, oh, exciting.
35:00On the other hand, you're like, something bad is coming.
35:01It is so nice to see you guys again.
35:02Welcome to New York and welcome to New York Fashion Week.
35:03You have demonstrated that you have the ability to perform well under pressure.
35:08I realized, oh, God.
35:09It's taking a turn for the worst.
35:10And you need to harness that ability now, because we have one final surprise.
35:14Oh, crap.
35:15You need to harness that ability now because we have one final surprise.
35:19Oh, crap.
35:39You have one more look to create.
35:54Making a 13th look could become a problem.
35:57So that 13th look has to be cohesive.
35:59It has to fit in with the other 12 looks in the collection, and it has to be as well executed.
36:04Things are going to get a little more hectic probably than I want.
36:08So your muse model will be casting the model for the 13th look.
36:13So a lot's on you right now.
36:15Yeah.
36:16But we do have help for you guys.
36:19Hmm.
36:22Look who's here.
36:23And in walks, Logan, Christopher, and Jordana.
36:29She brought back some of our friends, which is really great.
36:33Now we have help, which is much needed and is way more fun.
36:38Hmm.
36:39So who is going to get who is the big question.
36:43Althea.
36:44I'm going to choose Logan because I worked with you before and I thought it went well.
36:50Hey!
36:55Hi Weena.
36:56Come to Mama.
36:57Well this is easy.
36:58This is very easy.
36:59I'm glad you're here.
37:00You have 30 minutes to sketch, then we're going shopping at Mood where you'll have a budget
37:12of $250.
37:13All right.
37:14Work hard.
37:15Work thoughtfully.
37:16It's a 13th look everybody.
37:18And I'll see you guys at Bryant Park.
37:19Mwah!
37:21Bye.
37:22Go, go, go.
37:24Oh, oh.
37:25I think we definitely need a jacket because just keep it wintery.
37:26Yeah.
37:27For the 13th look, I really want to bring in another jacket with strong shoulders to reinforce
37:40the knitwear jacket.
37:41I don't think that you should show the lining.
37:44I wouldn't have it like exposed.
37:47I mean everything's done but it's not, you know what I mean?
37:51I'm good in like finishing.
37:53I'm focused.
37:54I know.
37:55Irina definitely needs help.
37:57The only thing that I can do is give her the confidence that she needs.
38:02We all need that little positive input.
38:05You think it's cohesive?
38:06It is.
38:07Yeah.
38:08Definitely.
38:09Okay.
38:10You can have whatever you want.
38:11I thought you had it.
38:12All right.
38:13I'm playing a lot with different shapes and kind of variations on volume.
38:18You know how I really like fairy tales and magical things?
38:21Yeah, yeah.
38:22This is kind of where it went.
38:23There's a whimsy.
38:24Yes.
38:25A lot of whimsy.
38:26I don't want to make decisions for her.
38:28I really can just kind of bandy around ideas with her.
38:31Do you want another dress?
38:32Do you want a skirt and top?
38:34Do you want a gown?
38:35I almost feel like I need one more like wow piece.
38:38Mm-hmm.
38:39My 13th look is another gown.
38:41I've been trying to push myself to do things that aren't so expected of me, but gowns are
38:49what I love to do, so that's what I'm going to do.
38:52All right, designers, grab your coats and follow me.
38:56We're walking to Mood.
38:58We're using our feet.
38:59It's New York.
39:03Designers, welcome to the original Mood.
39:05Mood New York.
39:06You can do your work.
39:07Your 30 minutes starts now.
39:09Knitting or crochet needles.
39:16You're going to knit and crochet for a minute?
39:19Yeah.
39:20Do you have time to do that?
39:21Yes, of course.
39:22You all right?
39:23Yeah, it's run out of money.
39:25I was thinking jacket before and now I'm just like not feeling it.
39:28Say no.
39:29All right.
39:30No.
39:31Designers, whatever you need, you have 30 seconds to get it.
39:36All right.
39:37Althea, Logan.
39:38Oh, my God.
39:39To the counter.
39:40And you're all here.
39:42Good.
39:43All right, designers, let's head back to the work room.
39:46Okay.
39:47Thank you, Mood.
39:49Thank you, Swatch.
39:50I think it's almost better if it's a little different, you know?
40:00Okay.
40:01I think it'll walk pretty.
40:02Yeah, for sure it will.
40:03Right now, I'm draping a pair of pants for the 13th look.
40:06There's still a lot of work to do.
40:08I'll do the pocket because I did this one.
40:11You finished with the gray one?
40:12Yeah.
40:13Wow.
40:14You're awesome, Giordana.
40:15I know I am.
40:17So Giordana's role is like key now.
40:20I have a lot of sort of fine tuning and cleaning up to do, and she's like the best person for
40:26it.
40:27My girlfriend tonight is to get pretty far on the 13th look.
40:33I want to have the foundation finished to where it's just sewing and finishing tomorrow
40:39with all the fittings.
40:40There's not going to be a whole lot of time to work.
40:42Just meditate on it tonight.
40:44All right.
40:45Just meditate on it.
40:46Play and meditate.
40:49If I finish everything new today, tomorrow there's obviously going to be a lot of work
40:54with fitting because taking things in, all that sort of stuff.
40:57Like, I'm just getting stressed, obviously.
40:59Just relax.
41:00You'll be fine.
41:01Yeah.
41:02See, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
41:03I need to shut up.
41:05So we get back to the hotel, and all of a sudden I just feel horrible.
41:22I thought I was done being sick, but it is not so.
41:27You okay?
41:28I just feel really horrible.
41:30Can I do anything?
41:31Mm-mm.
41:32Too much movement.
41:33The cab and then the elevator is like, ugh.
41:38I just feel horrible.
41:39I just want to like crawl into the corner and die.
41:48I don't know.
41:49I don't know.
41:50Next week on Project Runway.
41:51For the makeup, it's going to be a bit messy.
41:53It sounds like what Irina was telling me.
41:54I was getting overwhelmed.
41:55I just really have to work extremely fast.
41:59You done?
42:00No.
42:01Here.
42:02I'll do this.
42:03I'll do this.
42:04Go.
42:05I feel awful.
42:06I didn't know how this was supposed to go.
42:08It finally hits me that I'm showing at Bryant Park.
42:13Designers.
42:14Yes?
42:15I am about to lose it.
42:18We should be lining up.
42:19Hello, everybody.
