00:01Previously on Project Runway...
00:03Fashion is news. This is the fabric for your challenge.
00:07Our materials is newspaper. Yeah.
00:10It's definitely risky doing a coat because I don't know if the sleeves are going to happen or not.
00:15What's going to happen is the birds are actually going to look like they're holding the dress up.
00:18It may look like the birds attacked the dress.
00:25Irina, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:30It was a red mess.
00:31Thanks, Nicholas. That's really nice. Throw me right under the bus.
00:34Jerk.
00:35That means, Johnny, you're out.
00:38This is Project Runway.
00:39Of course I'm the best.
00:41Let's do this.
00:42The search for the next big fashion designer.
00:44I have to win.
00:46You better watch out.
00:4716 designers.
00:48Ivan, you're out.
00:50Don't get cut.
00:51Three finalists will make it to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
00:54I'm the best designer here.
00:56I have no fear.
00:57Make it work.
00:58That's my one.
00:59But only one can be the winner.
01:01This is my dream.
01:02For these 16 designers, Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.
01:07The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie-Claire magazine, a Paris vacation courtesy of Avian, and $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to start their own life.
01:20Here we go again.
01:21I know.
01:22It's kind of weird waking up and there's like two empty beds.
01:25Oh, Malvin.
01:26Oh, Johnny.
01:27You know, I wish Johnny luck, but I'm kind of glad that he's gone because I think it makes the competition a little more serious for everyone.
01:38I think it's going to be a lot quieter now.
01:39I think it's going to be a lot quieter now.
01:41You can focus on sign.
01:42Not on comforting Johnny.
01:43Yeah.
01:44I'm sorry.
01:45I'm not here to make real good friends.
01:47I mean, I love all the people that I'm with, but when it comes down to it, I want to be in Pride Park.
01:51Are you ready, Irvina?
01:53The competition is definitely getting stiffer.
01:56Of course, I'd like to win again, but in the next two or three challenges, it's going to get real tough.
02:01I don't even know what to think about the next challenge.
02:05I was in the bottom tree on the West challenge.
02:07I was shocked to tell you the truth.
02:09Is it time to go?
02:10Let's go.
02:11I'm terrified of you.
02:19Hello.
02:20Hi.
02:21How are you all doing?
02:22Irvina, you won the last challenge.
02:24You have immunity this week, and you cannot be eliminated.
02:27I'm sure that you're ready to hear about your next challenge.
02:30Yes.
02:31Well, we are in Los Angeles, and it's about time to get you out of that sewing room to see what this town is most known for.
02:38Movie making.
02:39I am so excited.
02:41I've done a lot of costumes for film.
02:43This might be very, very interesting for me.
02:46Tim is waiting for you at stage six to tell you about your next challenge.
02:49Good luck, and I'll see you on the runway.
02:51Bye.
02:52Designers, welcome to a real Hollywood soundstage.
03:04It's pretty surreal to be at this soundstage.
03:06It's kind of cool.
03:07Please welcome Collier Strong, consulting makeup artist for L'Oreal Paris.
03:11Collier is my partner in presenting you with today's challenge.
03:14Tim has a velvet bag with him.
03:16So we're wondering, is this a team challenge?
03:18What the hell's going on here?
03:20We are in Los Angeles, the heart of the movie making industry.
03:24This is where films and their characters come to life.
03:26So for this challenge, you will select a film genre and invent a character who lives in that genre.
03:33Yes.
03:34Whoa.
03:35I have five cinematic genres from which you are to choose.
03:39They are action-adventure, film noir, science fiction, period piece, and Western.
03:45Oh God, what if I get stuck with Western?
03:47Please, please, please don't get stuck with Western.
03:49Western would be a little bit tough for me because I'm not really American.
03:54L'Oreal Paris and I have a long-standing history with Project Runway.
03:57And we also have a long relationship with award-winning actresses who have all played characters in every one of these genres.
04:04So I'm here to help you bring these characters to life through makeup.
04:08Irina, since you were the winner of the last challenge, you get to choose first.
04:11Okay.
04:12You may choose any of these.
04:13I think I'll go with film noir.
04:15Excellent.
04:16So for the remaining ten of you, we have two cards for each.
04:20So as I call your name, come forward and please select one from Collier.
04:24All right.
04:25Logan.
04:26Action-adventure.
04:29Carol Hanna.
04:30Action-adventure.
04:31All right.
04:32Action-adventure is now gone, guys.
04:34We do.
04:35Rahman.
04:36Without a doubt, science fiction.
04:37I grew up watching sci-fi.
04:39I know all about Star Trek and Star Wars and everything in between.
04:42So I think it's a good fit for me.
04:44Louise.
04:45I, of course, am going to pick film noir.
04:47That has your name written all over it.
04:49Althea.
04:50I also am going to pick film noir.
04:53Jordana.
04:54I like to take the period piece.
04:56Nicholas.
04:57Science fiction.
04:58Christopher.
04:59There's western and there's period piece.
05:02I don't want to work with denim.
05:04I don't want spurs.
05:06I don't want to do a gingham dress.
05:08Period piece.
05:09We have two designers remaining and we have two westerns.
05:12I have to do western.
05:14Oh.
05:15Cool.
05:16Thanks.
05:17I wanted period.
05:18Oh, no.
05:19But I was last again and I was stuck with western.
05:22All right, designers.
05:23Collier will be consulting with you later.
05:25Yep.
05:26And we're going back to the workroom to sketch.
05:28Come on, everybody.
05:29See you later.
05:30All right, designers.
05:31As I can tell you discovered, there is a dossier for each of you according to your cinematic
05:44genre.
05:45All right.
05:46So you have 30 minutes to sketch.
05:48Then we're going shopping at Mood where you'll have a budget of $150.
05:51And you have until midnight tonight to complete your look.
05:54Come for it!
05:55It's a one-day challenge, which is crazy.
05:57You're inventing a character.
05:59Who is she?
06:00What does she do?
06:01And why is she wearing the clothes that she's wearing?
06:03Okay, everyone.
06:04Your 30 minutes starts now.
06:06I will be back.
06:08See you soon.
06:09At first, I was like, Western.
06:13Hmm.
06:14John Wayne.
06:15It just wasn't flowing.
06:17You know, I just tried to figure out every female actress that was in a Western movie
06:21and how to make her interesting.
06:27Western.
06:28I mean, we don't even have a cowboy hat.
06:31So I decided to go a completely different route and do like a saloon girl.
06:35I'm trying to think, saloon girl, red and black or pink and black.
06:38But I don't want to look like, like she's, who am I kidding?
06:42It is a costume.
06:45I am doing sexy assassin.
06:48I know I can crank out a big, giant dress really quickly, but I really want to stretch
06:52myself in this challenge and do something else.
06:54Do you want to see what I'm doing?
06:56Do you want to just compare notes?
06:57I think it's beneficial for both of us.
06:59No, I do too.
07:00I think that Carole Hannah is the only female that I really connected with.
07:04I don't know.
07:05Mine's almost like military-esque slash like sword fighter.
07:09She's been a lot of fun getting to know.
07:11She's nice to have around.
07:12I like it.
07:13Yeah.
07:14I don't know who decided that Logan and I should have tables next to each other
07:18because it is really distracting.
07:21It was really hot.
07:23I am a die hard Trekkie.
07:29I am like totally fascinated by the idea of like science fiction.
07:34I'm excited.
07:36I am a daydreamer.
07:37I daydream all the time and I'm always in far away lands and fantasies and everything.
07:42I think that's what separates me from the other designers is I can bring in elements from the costume industry and mix them into my ready-to-wear.
07:51When I think film noir, I mean it's specific to the late 30s, early 40s.
07:55I really like the sort of femme fatale woman.
07:58Very sort of like classic, edgy.
08:01From last challenge and coming into this one, it reminded me of how good I am at doing these wow pieces.
08:09Do I really need the immunity?
08:10I have a hunch that I could live without it right now.
08:14A period piece can be some other era or time period where there's an epic drama going on.
08:23I can choose the time period.
08:25That could be the 80s.
08:26It could be the Roman time.
08:28I'm afraid the judges might not get my interpretation of period, but I'm hoping that they're along for the ride.
08:35All right, designers, let's go to mood.
08:40So you have your budget of $150 and you have 30 minutes, okay?
08:45Go, go, go.
08:49I've been to this point in the competition.
08:51I have not been in the top three.
08:53I have been, you know, in the bottom three.
08:55I want to be experimental.
08:57I want to be daring.
08:59I'm going to do it.
09:00Oh, no.
09:01$200 a yard?
09:02That's crazy.
09:04Designers, 15 minutes.
09:06I really want to go with a brocade.
09:08Unfortunately, brocades are $30 a yard and I need seven yards.
09:12So it's out of the question.
09:14A 14, $3 in charge.
09:15Six.
09:16Five minutes.
09:18This is $8 a yard.
09:20Okay.
09:21That's a winner.
09:22Let's do it, but five yards of it.
09:23Oh, I need glue.
09:24I can't reach it.
09:25Somebody help.
09:27That's it, everybody.
09:28Time.
09:29Boom.
09:36We have to complete this challenge in one day.
09:39Do I wish we had two days?
09:40Hell yeah, I do.
09:42I love whoever stole my body.
09:44Everson, what would have been your first genre choice?
09:46Period.
09:47I wanted period, but I figured out a way to design Western as a period, because Western really is a period.
09:55My concept is a beautiful lady and her husband's off to war and she has to take care of the land.
10:02So she has to become a lot tougher.
10:07Has anybody seen my pink and white scissors?
10:10I picked the 20s because that was exactly the time where the woman started getting more emancipated.
10:17Does anybody have any extra bobbins?
10:19Like, I purposely filled the bobbin up with this thread because I need it.
10:24Sabotage.
10:27So guess what, guys?
10:28I'm doing another white outfit.
10:29Tell me your story.
10:30But there's three sort of queens who, like, watch over the universe and they all reside on Orion's belt.
10:37One of them decides that she wants to rule the whole universe.
10:41Is that your girl?
10:42Yeah, that's my girl.
10:43Of course.
10:44That's freaking amazing.
10:45My concept is to design a jumpsuit that depicts a human-alien hybrid.
10:50Green, reptilian.
10:52That's amazing.
10:53I think I'm on a good path with this.
10:56Oh, what the hell?
10:57Somebody took my damn bobbin.
10:59I'm so tired of people doing that.
11:01We've been doing that all day.
11:02Who does this?
11:03I don't know.
11:04The vibe in the workroom is a little bit more competitive than it has been in the past.
11:08You know, that's another factor in this whole competition is there's talent, there's a little bit of luck, and then there's, can you take the pressure?
11:16Who is the evildoer?
11:17I think it's Sharyn.
11:18It was Sharyn.
11:19I am not the bobbin stealer.
11:21I'm using black.
11:22Why would I steal her green?
11:23This is like its own little detective movie.
11:26Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
11:31What's your story, Louise?
11:34I'm not exactly sure yet.
11:36I always think about that, like who I'm designing for, who my client is, and I don't think she's really thought about it.
11:43Still working on her story?
11:44Yeah.
11:45Still working on that.
11:46I am really worried for her because I don't think she really has a concept.
11:49You know, you can't just dilly dally anymore.
11:51Like, you really need to know what your point of view is.
11:56Coming up on Project Runway.
11:58This could be sublime, or it could be a big hot mess.
12:02Are you thinking this is a little too safe?
12:04At the moment, yeah.
12:05Oh my God.
12:06Oh my God.
12:07I want you to look around this room.
12:08Somebody's going home.
12:10Looking around the room, there's a lot of talent still here, so I think what it's going to come down to is who interprets the challenge the best.
12:26I am nervous, nervous, nervous, because I still have a lot of application to do.
12:32You know I still have to stitch all that on.
12:34Right?
12:35Oh, it's nice.
12:36No.
12:37Come on.
12:38I just want to send down the runway everything perfect.
12:41As long as you love it, and you know you did what you wanted to do.
12:45Then it's just a matter of style.
12:47I mean, a matter of taste.
12:48The bottom line is, I have to be confident.
12:51You never know with the judges, so.
12:53Designers, I'm here to check in with you.
12:55I'm going to start with Jordana.
12:57Your genre.
12:58It's period piece.
12:59The 20s.
13:00She discovers oil, and this is the first time that she's coming out in a society.
13:04How old is she?
13:05She's in her 30s.
13:07On that topic?
13:08We need to make it a little bit higher up.
13:10Higher?
13:11Do you think?
13:12I'm thinking lower.
13:13I just don't see Jordana being a bride in park.
13:15The rest of us are on a different sort of level, and I don't think she could compete with that.
13:21Thank you, Jordana.
13:23Okay.
13:24Christopher.
13:25Hey, Tim.
13:26Talk to me.
13:27There's this vampire bride.
13:28Okay.
13:29The 1800s.
13:30It's Paris, France.
13:31The bustle's very Victorian.
13:32Mm-hmm.
13:33I would reference that.
13:34Okay.
13:35The top is going to be this halter.
13:36She has bare arms.
13:37Yeah.
13:38I mean, I love everything about this.
13:41I really do.
13:42But that's not very Victorian.
13:44Very Victorian.
13:45Or 1800s.
13:46Tim is truly a mentor.
13:49He'll try to steer you in the right direction without telling you exactly what you should do.
13:53Thank you, Tim.
13:54Okay.
13:55Epperson, all I can say is, Annie, get your gun.
13:58Great.
13:59Okay, great.
14:00That's it.
14:01You know, I was a little concerned about ruffles being too something else other than western.
14:07The ruffles have such a profound visual impact.
14:10I mean, I'm really seduced by them.
14:12Carry on.
14:13Yes, yes.
14:14I will.
14:16Ramon.
14:17Hello, Tim.
14:18Talk to me.
14:19I'm going to do a jumpsuit.
14:20I want to get it so that the fabric itself almost looks skin-like.
14:23It does.
14:24It could be sublime, or it could be a big hot mess.
14:28I do like to think outside of the box.
14:31It's really costume-based, so why go safe with it?
14:34You have a lot of work ahead of you.
14:35Yes, I do.
14:36I will leave you alone.
14:37Thank you, Ramon.
14:38Thank you so much.
14:39Okay.
14:40Louise.
14:41Hi, Tim.
14:42So talk to me.
14:43This is the underslip of the dress.
14:44Okay.
14:45And the sheath is actually going to look like this, with mitered pieces of this lace.
14:51Beautiful.
14:52What I love most about you is what you can achieve with subtlety and nuance that does
14:58not hold up very well on the runway.
15:00Some of my designs are minimal.
15:03They're not standing out amongst the crowd.
15:05I need to pull out all the stops and make it show-worthy.
15:08Take the DNA that you have as a designer and push it.
15:14Okay.
15:15Thank you, Tim.
15:16Nicholas.
15:17Hi, Tim.
15:18Talk to me.
15:19So I'm obviously doing Western.
15:20Obviously.
15:21Obviously.
15:22Obviously.
15:23No, I'm doing sci-fi fantasy.
15:26You're probably.
15:27My character, she's a villain.
15:29A villain in white.
15:30Yes.
15:31What I love about this piece is mainly the color because the light is going to shine through
15:34it.
15:35I want you to exaggerate what you want to do.
15:38Are you thinking this is a little too safe?
15:40At the moment, yeah.
15:41I totally get it.
15:42I can go much bigger.
15:43Do it.
15:44Okay.
15:45Sounds good.
15:46Thank you, Tim.
15:48Designers, I am enthralled and inspired by what each one of you is doing.
15:53But I'm also reminded somebody is going home.
15:56So I want you to look around this room and assess where your own work is in relation to
16:01other designers and just be as ambitious as you can be.
16:06I'm a little worried about Ramon.
16:08When I think of sci-fi, I think of beautiful queens and really gorgeous women.
16:12You know, not Godzilla.
16:14But I can't wait to see what the results would be.
16:17I am about to send in your models.
16:20They are here for two simultaneous purposes.
16:23L'Oreal Paris makeup consultations with Collier Strong and fittings with you.
16:28I'm sending them in.
16:33Yeah, you're probably like, what the hell is going on?
16:35I don't know.
16:36I'm excited.
16:41Get it, fit it, and then I got all kind of leather.
16:43Ooh.
16:44Hi.
16:45I'm walking into the consultation with Kaelin for her look.
16:48Bless you.
16:49Bless you.
16:50I mean, the makeup is key in this challenge.
16:53We're doing film noir.
16:54Fantastic.
16:55It's a very dark eye and a very high, thin, raised brow.
16:59That's beautiful.
17:02It's very fantasy.
17:03It's a costume challenge, but it's also a L'Oreal challenge.
17:06The whole thing should be just like it just dusted.
17:09She looks like just right out of a fantasy.
17:13I really need your help with 20s era makeup.
17:16It's a classic look.
17:17Very sexy.
17:18Very dark red lip.
17:20That's it.
17:21Thank you so much.
17:22And so what did you have in your mind?
17:24Something harsh.
17:25Yeah.
17:26But sexy, right?
17:27Really dramatic.
17:28Really bold.
17:29Awesome.
17:31Yay!
17:32I'm shaking thoughts all of a sudden.
17:34Oh, I don't know.
17:36This is looking very Kermit the Frog gone wrong.
17:43Oh, I don't think this is going to work out.
17:46I think I'm in trouble.
17:49It's just not what I thought it would be.
17:52I think I need to make a dress.
17:53I have to go with it.
17:54I'm going to have to buy the suit.
17:55I'm going to have to buy the suit.
17:56I'm going to have to buy the suit.
17:57I'm going to have to buy the suit.
17:58Or a coat.
17:59Or a vest kind of thing.
18:00Coat.
18:01Yeah.
18:02Yeah, I don't know.
18:05Unfortunately, with two hours left, you need to start from scratch.
18:09I'm going to let you work it out.
18:10Okay.
18:11I trust that it's going to be gorgeous.
18:12Yeah.
18:13I hope so.
18:14It will be.
18:15Thanks, honey.
18:16It's not like there's another option.
18:18I have to do it.
18:29You have something in your mind, and it doesn't come to fruition.
18:36I sure am.
18:37I have no other choice.
18:39I can't send something that's absolutely insanely horrible down the runway.
18:44This is one of the most difficult things I've been through so far in my life.
18:49The challenges are getting more and more difficult, and, you know, I know I've almost lost it a couple of times.
18:55Oh, my God.
18:56Oh, my God.
18:57You know, other designers, you can really tell it's really getting to them also.
19:01I'm a little stressed.
19:02I'm not going to lie.
19:03I just have a lot to do in a short period of time.
19:07I'm just going to make the best darn saloon dress I can and hope that I'm still here tomorrow.
19:16Ow!
19:17Are you okay?
19:18Ow, ow, ow, ow!
19:19When you're rushing around last minute, there are always going to be cuts and scrapes and bruises.
19:23And that went right through my fingernail, but it's all been worth it.
19:26I think I have a really pretty dress.
19:29I really hope that I'm in the top three for this one.
19:32And then this will have, like, pieces that go up.
19:35I like it.
19:36Yeah.
19:37It's cool.
19:38I totally have to save it.
19:39You know you can do it.
19:40If I'm going to go home off of this challenge, I want to give it a fight.
19:44Oh, God.
19:45But I can only do what I have time to do.
19:48We're done.
19:49Let's go home.
19:53Let's go.
19:58Coming up on Project Longway.
20:00Move it.
20:01Workroom is pretty crazy this morning.
20:03There's no turning back at this point.
20:05It's too late.
20:06People are getting really cranky.
20:08Seriously.
20:09Keep talking.
20:10Working.
20:25It's morning on the runway, and I am pretty panicked because my dress is not completed at all.
20:30I will give you my newborn for a hot glue gun right now.
20:32You know who has a hot glue gun?
20:34It's a Donna.
20:36What do you have left to do on your dress?
20:38You have a lot to do.
20:39I was hoping I will be able to make like a cigarette holder.
20:42But I have enough to worry about finishing everything.
20:45I don't want to think about anything else, you know?
20:51So the first thing that Tim Gunn says is this could be sensational or it could be a hot mess.
20:58I changed my design because I feel like I need to take it to the next level as Tim put it.
21:03Ready?
21:05Girls are ready.
21:06Let's go.
21:08All right.
21:19Workroom is pretty crazy this morning.
21:23Just finalizing everything to get my final look finished.
21:28I know that the judges are going to love my design.
21:30I don't think I'm going to be in the top three.
21:35I feel like I'll rank somewhere in the middle, mostly because I chose to take a risk.
21:41I'm happy with the design, but it's not exactly what I envisioned.
21:44But it's too late.
21:45There's no turning back at this point.
21:48Good morning, designers.
21:50As you know, your models are here.
21:51So you have two hours to send them to the Garnier hair studio in the Laurier Paris makeup room.
21:56Use the Macy's accessory wall thoughtfully.
21:59All right.
22:00Work like there's no tomorrow because for one of you there won't be.
22:02All right.
22:03I'll see you later.
22:04Time was not on our side in this challenge.
22:13A lot of dresses are like halfway done.
22:16People are getting really cranky.
22:20Please, Lord, let me not sew my fingers together today.
22:22All right, seriously, no talking, working.
22:25The 20s are very much into accessories.
22:29So that's the huge part of my challenge.
22:32It looks so simple, but it took me forever to make.
22:35Trust me, I've worked with this material before.
22:37I know exactly what you're talking about.
22:42This is really going to be a tough one.
22:43I think this is going to be the toughest for the judges
22:45because everybody really stuck to their movie genres.
22:49I think you could see my signature work in the garment.
22:52So I totally doubt if I'm going home today.
22:58I think you could get some of this with a little bit of sheen there.
23:01Okay.
23:02Is there any way that you could, like, trim the back of that?
23:04That's a great idea.
23:05I just want volume.
23:06Oh, you're beautiful.
23:08Damn.
23:09That's cool.
23:11Designers, ten minutes.
23:12We are walking to the runway.
23:13All right?
23:14All right.
23:15All right.
23:21Looking around the room, it looks like Roman is really stressed out
23:25because I know he started his outfit two hours before we left
23:28the night before.
23:29And Irina was also really hurrying to get her dress together.
23:34Move it.
23:37Damn.
23:38You're, like, accident-prone.
23:39Designers and models, the time has come.
23:43We've got to go, Irina.
23:44I'd finish it in the final seconds, but I could have, of course, worked on it for another five hours if I could.
23:52Coming up on Project Runway.
23:53I really don't like the dress.
23:54It's too safe.
23:55It's not special enough.
23:56I'm bored.
23:57It looks like a snooze fest.
23:58Hello.
23:59Hi.
24:00Welcome to the runway.
24:01As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.
24:02There are 11 of you here, and after tonight there will be 10.
24:04This week you chose a movie genre and were asked to create a character and their look from that genre.
24:25You had $150 in one day to put it together.
24:28I look forward to seeing what you've done.
24:31and what you've done all right let's meet the judges first we have american designer john
24:36vavados editor for mary claire magazine zoe glasner and oscar nominated costume designer
24:46arian phillips welcome we will score your designs as they come down the runway
24:52one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out let's start the show
25:01kaylin looks like a film noir actress she looks like she just stepped off a set i am so happy that
25:08she's able to do that because it needs that it's a costume and i just want to run up and give her a
25:12big kiss as my garment is coming down the runway it hits serious wow as soon as she takes the jacket
25:21off it just looks really good it's really hot this is a pretty big stretch for me so i'm happy that i
25:27was able to pull it off i'm watching my model evany walk down the runway and i told her to give it a
25:35little dance she goes all out it looks really good everything seems to just pop and just look amazing
25:46my garment really created this pride and katie was able to put forth what this woman would look like
25:53on the runway i've really taken something that could still stand as a piece in my own runway show
26:01watching celine walking down the runway it definitely is me and it did tell a story
26:05but i really pushed the envelope and i'm nervous because it could go either way i could completely
26:11bomb or i could actually win this
26:13i definitely feel like i've created a film noir outfit and stayed true to that sort of feeling
26:22the era the 40s tanisha is playing the role so well it really seems like a movie instead of a catwalk
26:31as she's walking down the runway there's this feeling of joy the placement of certain things
26:36isn't exactly what i wanted so i just have to be able to convey my story to the judges
26:46i think it's a really pretty dress but it's just not as show-stopping as some of the others
26:51i wanted to do 40s and mix little 20s in with it but it just didn't come across
26:56well as either one of the time periods
26:58i'm totally excited my talk she was like amazing such a nice connection and we both just ran with
27:07it you could see that she was a tattered western lady from that time i'm proud of what i put out there
27:18i definitely have created the character that i wanted to create
27:21i am very confident and i'm very happy with the outcome but you never know with the judges
27:31i love how powerful the look is and you really know that she's been in battle
27:35but i was going for something that was going to be dramatic on the runway and i feel like i did that
27:44if i call your name please step forward logan
27:49carol hannah
27:52shiren irena
27:56althea
27:59if i have called your name congratulations your scores have qualified you to move on
28:04to the next challenge you can leave the runway
28:11the remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores
28:15one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
28:18let's bring out your models
28:28okay i would like to start with jordana my challenge was to do a time period obviously i
28:35choose the flapper style the 20s you can see there's a lot of work and a lot of detail put into
28:39it i don't know that it's a signature piece of her own i too question the specialness i'm just not sure
28:50that it's as memorable as maybe it could have been okay there's no doubt jordana of your skill as a
28:57dressmaker the one thing that i don't see from that is how that differs from my great-grandmother's
29:01dress i don't feel that you brought anything new to the table what i don't see is your eyes your point
29:08of view i see your hands but not your eyes okay nicholas your genre was science fiction
29:15tell us about your character she is one of the three sister queens who control the universe and is
29:21thinking about overthrowing the other two sisters unfortunately the other two sisters find out and
29:26they banish her to a crypt where she's frozen for eternity well i love your story i think you really
29:33got into the character you did a great job of taking this evil queen and making her beautiful
29:39i think it's fabulous i knew exactly who she was i said oh there's the ice queen working on a film you
29:44need to work closely with the makeup people so obviously you did and you really thought about it
29:49i'm sure this will photograph beautifully so well done so cool nicholas i really really like it i wrote
29:56clever bold and risky thank you so much thank you okay louise tell us about your character
30:03your genre was film noir i wanted to make her an aspiring film actress she's going to an industry
30:10party where it was expected that they were to dress in costume as another decade so she's going
30:16as like a 40s version of a flapper i think it's interesting that you have a decade within a decade
30:22and for me that's what this looks like a little bit of a convoluted mess i just think it looks a
30:26little cheap and this is going to sound harsh but it looks a little like a french made uniform or
30:30something like in a plastic bag at the store the fabric doesn't look luxe to me it looks like a
30:34snooze fest i'm bored i just am not in love with this look it doesn't come across special at all i'm
30:41sure you put a lot of work into it but if it was supposed to be something for a film there's nothing
30:46strong about it and the detail doesn't read and it doesn't seem to have a style to me well i appreciate
30:52your criticism because i've been wanting to get on stage whether or not i was in the top or bottom just
30:56so i could hear like i just i just think those kind of challenges where you can be more innovative
31:01you know it's for a movie and you have the freedom of thinking about the most craziest character
31:07as you please okay christopher your genre was a period piece first of all i'm not a history major
31:15so get ready for the historical inaccuracies um all right she's at her wedding day and she has to
31:22make a big decision at that moment she has a secret and that's she's a vampire she could get
31:27married and curse her husband by turning him into a vampire or she could run away and never see him
31:34again and therefore hurt him as well well first of all i really like the way you think because when
31:39you're starting off a collection you want to kind of create your own story your own muse and you did
31:43that very well here very very strong thank you i think it's really well done that neck is so elegant i
31:49love the gems i think it's so exquisite and i love that you made it modern in a way like something
31:55that i haven't seen before there's wow factor with this piece and that detail in the back for me is
32:00fabulous because we can't forget the over the shoulder shots and that would just be a fabulous exiting out
32:06of the church it's definitely worthy of being photographed for film thank you roman your genre was
32:14science fiction yes her name is lola she has left her home planet where all of her people are reptiles
32:21to come to earth and is going to this fabulous party to quench her insatiable desire for men
32:29i like the story i like that you really thought about it but i really don't like the dress
32:35okay it looks to me a little like swamp thing b movie or something i wrote down shoddily made okay
32:42well i give you credit you took sci-fi it's not an easy area to design for but after that you missed
32:47the hallmark it looks a little bit like a school project hot green mess that was definitely not what
32:53i was going after you're a good designer i mean we've seen some great things from you it's just really
32:58hard to see that you can actually sew in this outfit yeah roman i sympathize with you you chose one of the
33:04hardest materials to work with leather you sabotage yourself a little bit with biting off such a big
33:10project i will be honest i did have a design before and it failed me so i decided to change my design
33:18you know i really want to like it because i think that you thought perhaps in a more ambitious way
33:24than other people did in this challenge so i appreciate that thank you
33:27that's interesting emerson your genre was western tell us about your character this character her
33:34husband went up to fight like for the war since he went away she's taking care of the cattle the land
33:42her children there's a gun under here somewhere just in case and she's just really like in charge
33:48and just like naturally beauty and tattered at the same time i think it's just fabulous it's very
33:55creative i really appreciated that you thought outside the box obviously women didn't wear denim
34:00dresses at that time right but it works this certainly has bravado and she's not to be messed
34:06with i i appreciate that can i see the back sure this is great this feels like it has a real
34:13contemporary value i mean i could put her on a runway and it would be something that people would want
34:18to wear thank you so much when you get something like western like maybe that feels like the short end
34:23you know it feels like the small straw to me i didn't even get to choose it and you're thinking
34:27oh no what am i gonna do how am i gonna make this work i love the layers i love the fabric choices
34:33and i love the styling i think they both nailed it the minute you walked out matar you can manage my
34:39farm anytime what is nice about it really is you created something new and i think that is what is
34:45important about a designer is that you do something that you have not seen before very good job thank you
34:51okay we've heard what you had to say we're gonna have a little chat and then we're gonna call you
34:55back you can leave the runway let's talk first about the ones that we didn't like so much yeah jordana
35:08flapper flapper i thought it was thoughtful i just didn't think it was special enough
35:13if you think about a period piece i mean you could have made some amazing other choices than a flapper
35:19but i think the things that stood out today were the people who were dreamers when they really
35:23looked at who their character was going to be that's what was lacking in the flapper dress no surprises
35:33let's talk about louise i was really disappointed with louise's dress i just felt like it didn't say
35:39anything and i thought that she missed the challenge yeah i just i think you're right it wasn't memorable it
35:44really missed it for me it wasn't really i'm standing out here on the runway and i'm going to
35:49show you my best and i think every time everybody stands up here it should be putting their best foot
35:53forward exactly okay let's talk about roman it was a shambles really i mean i hate to say it it looked
36:03like staple glued together it sounds like he had scrapped an initial idea and done this in a haste you
36:09know i'm sympathetic to him because i felt like i saw some creativity there and some ideas he had a
36:16really good story roman definitely had more of a vision than louise and it was a risky idea yes really
36:22but i really do think it was like a little swamp thing risky and ambitious but unfortunately no banana
36:29let's talk about the designers that we did like let's talk about nicholas he loves white and lace and
36:41it has not really worked in other challenges but today it worked fabric looked cheap with the naked eye
36:47but i think that that fabric would photograph much more expensive than it looks there's a lot of things
36:52when you actually see costumes they just don't look expensive but on the camera they look great the detail
36:59on that garment was spectacular yeah he really got to do what he loves today and it's show us
37:05something we haven't seen if you would watch that movie you would go home and be like wow that was
37:09such a beautiful dress that the evil queen was wearing let's talk about epperson he's very interesting
37:18and very creative his story was good yeah and she was great with it too yeah she's amazing the whole
37:25combination was it was pretty terrific and the belt and the holster and all those little details
37:31i thought it was really cool he didn't actually pick west the genre western and he's like okay this
37:36is what i have to do now even though i might not like it i'm really going to give it some and he
37:41really did he did a great job yeah okay let's talk about christopher perfect it looked as beautiful
37:51in back as it did in front perfection it was and for a costume it needs to look great from every angle
37:56yeah and it really did he made this costume for 150 wow that's amazing that's that's impressive
38:03i was pretty blown away with his eye to pull those pieces together christopher made something really
38:08spectacular okay so we've made our decision yeah let's bring them back out
38:18one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
38:39one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
38:43jordana you're in you can leave the runway thank you very much
38:56epperson you're in you can leave the runway
39:06nicholas
39:09you are the winner of this challenge
39:10thank you your ice queen blew us away you really used your time to produce something memorable
39:19and exquisite your fantasy outfit also matched your story and both were equally impressive thank you
39:26you also have immunity for the next challenge and cannot be eliminated you can leave the runway thank
39:31you oh my god it is absolutely amazing the judges loved it somebody even called me an artist if i say so
39:38myself
39:42i'm only seeing right now brian park and a hundred thousand dollars i'm here to win this competition and
39:48nothing's going to stop me christopher good job you're in you can leave the runway
39:54i'm here to win this one of you will be out
40:09roman this dress missed the mark this garment was a home sewn mess your character may have been out of
40:17this world but what planet was she from there were some glimmers of creativity in your story but your
40:23execution was unacceptable louise a lot of times we say too costumy as a criticism but in your case you
40:33could have used more drama this dress didn't give us any sense of who your film character was
40:39it was unfortunately a snooze fest
40:45roman yes
40:52you're out
40:52that means louise you're in you can leave the runway
41:11thank you so much this has been an absolute honor thank you
41:22i was given an opportunity that a lot of people would kill for and i'm really grateful for that
41:27roman you're a fabulous designer and a fabulous person i hate telling you that you have to go to
41:33the work room to clean up your space but you do i came here to be a strong designer with a point of
41:39view and also to be a competitor and so i can leave with a smile on my face and a genuine one at that
41:49next week on project runway all i can tell you is that your next challenge will be quite colorful
41:54for this challenge you will be working in teams of two
41:57you don't want to overdo it team challenges are a pain in the neck i'd rather just do it myself
42:03you know it's too like plain she doesn't give me any direction she just says i don't like it
42:08bricks up oh my god so much stress one or more of you will be out no modern girl wants to wear
42:15that dress i don't know what is worse the pumpkin disco ball over shower curtain nighty did you really
42:20think they went together they don't
