Today, Rupert meets Sonny Spells for the first time in Rupert and the Old Mill.
00:16
There's a little bear that you've never seen before, who's a lot of fun.
00:23
Children everywhere, go to love him more and more, he's the number one.
00:30
There's a million stories to be told of the things that he's done.
00:36
And he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:44
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.
00:50
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:57
In all of his days.
00:59
Mrs. Bear is washing up the lunch things, whilst Rupert is telling her about school.
01:12
Rupert, dear, while you're talking, perhaps you could wipe the dishes for me, says Mrs. Bear.
01:16
Yes, Mummy.
01:19
Did I tell you that our teacher has given the class the afternoon off, says Rupert.
01:23
Well, you did mention it this morning before you went out, but you didn't tell me why.
01:28
We're studying old buildings, and the teacher wants us to go out and look for some.
01:34
I'll go.
01:35
I expect that's Edward.
01:36
Hello, Rupert, are you ready yet? asks Edward.
01:43
Well, I've just got to finish.
01:45
You can leave the wiping up, dear, and I'll see you at tea time, says Mrs. Bear.
01:49
I hope we can find some kind of old building, says Edward as they go down the lane.
01:56
I don't know where to look.
01:58
Wait for me, you too, puffs Bill Badger, hurrying to catch them up.
02:02
Come on, slow coach.
02:04
Where are we going to find this old place?
02:07
Well, over by the woods is a lane we've never been down before.
02:11
Let's try that.
02:13
Rupert Bear, Edward Trunk, and Bill Badger, too, follow one behind the other to a place that's new.
02:19
Isn't it exciting?
02:21
I like exploring.
02:24
Why are you spying on me? demands Raggedy, popping out from behind a tree.
02:29
Raggedy, what are you doing here?
02:32
We're not spying on you.
02:34
We're out looking for old buildings.
02:36
What have you got in your hand? asks Bill, looking at a piece of wood Raggedy is holding.
02:43
It's a horrible old piece of wood.
02:45
They got it from that old building over there, but it tastes awful.
02:48
There!
02:50
And he hurries away.
02:52
Come on, we're wasting too much time.
02:56
Rupert and his chums find an opening from the lane into a field and squeeze through the bushes.
03:01
I wonder where this leads to.
03:05
Edward sees a path.
03:06
Come on, let's follow it.
03:11
Soon they see part of a building through the trees.
03:14
Let's go and see what it is.
03:16
It looks like a very old building to me, exclaims Bill.
03:24
Perhaps it's too old to study, suggests Edward.
03:28
Oh no, the older the better.
03:30
Come on.
03:31
It's got a funny big wheel thing on the side.
03:36
And I can hear water.
03:39
Oh, I know what it is.
03:40
It's a mill.
03:41
I've seen pictures of them.
03:43
Rupert explains how a mill is always by a stream, so that the water can turn the big wheel to grind the corn.
03:52
Well, this wheel isn't turning, exclaims Edward.
03:57
Oh dear, oh dear, whatever shall I do?
04:00
A man is standing in the doorway.
04:03
Oh, I beg your pardon, I didn't see you.
04:06
Have you brought me some corn?
04:08
No, no, I'm afraid not.
04:11
Oh dear, I'm the miller, you see, but because of this newfangled machinery I haven't any corn to grind.
04:19
Why's that, sir?
04:20
inquires Rupert.
04:21
You see, these machines are so big, and with all the rain that we've had lately, the ground's too soft for them, and they get stuck in the mud.
04:32
What will you do then, sir?
04:35
I just hope some grain will turn up soon.
04:38
Now, what was it you wanted?
04:40
Rupert explains about them studying old buildings for school.
04:44
So, we'd like to study yours, if that's all right, he finishes.
04:47
Yes, of course, the mill might as well be of some use.
04:52
Bill and Edward decide to go inside first to have a look, but Rupert goes to examine the wheel.
04:59
It's very big when you get close to it, he thinks.
05:03
Ha, ha, ha, he, he, he, he.
05:05
Me name's Sunny Spells.
05:07
Oh, are you to do with the weather?
05:10
Yes, when Sunny Spells is on the way, you'll be happy, bright and gay, he chants.
05:15
Yes. Do you know Drizzle? He's to do with the weather as well.
05:19
Drizzle? Oh, yes, he's me first cousin.
05:23
Rupert's thrill.
05:24
I didn't know Drizzle had any relations.
05:28
But his name makes people miserable.
05:30
Mine makes people happy.
05:32
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
05:34
What do you do then?
05:36
Ah, my job is to look after the sun and make sure it's available when it's needed.
05:41
Oh, that sounds very important.
05:44
Um, I wonder whether you could help me then.
05:47
How?
05:49
Well, the miller's worried because he has no corn or wheat.
05:53
It's been too wet lately.
05:55
Oh, I'll try and help, says the little man, taking off his straw hat.
05:59
He throws it on the ground, just like Drizzle does.
06:02
And it grows, just like Drizzle's.
06:11
Rupert is amazed.
06:13
Come on, get in.
06:14
Then we'll be back for the next sunny spell.
06:18
Where are we going?
06:20
To the land of harvest.
06:22
The people are friendly and very helpful there.
06:29
Oh, it sounds great.
06:30
You'll meet the emperor of corn.
06:33
I'm sure he can do something for you.
06:39
A straw boater comes down on sandy ground.
06:43
Everything is yellow and bleached by the sun, which is always shiny.
06:47
Everyone lives outside here, explains Sunny Spells, getting out of the hat.
06:54
It's so warm.
06:57
He leads Rupert along bright corridors between the gold and corn, until they come to a gate.
07:05
It swings open as they approach, and a voice addresses them.
07:09
Welcome to the land of harvest.
07:12
Oh, how do you do, sir?
07:16
I'm Rupert Bear.
07:17
And I'm the emperor of corn.
07:21
What can I do for you?
07:24
Well, you see, the miller has no corn to grind this year, because it's been so wet, and the
07:30
big machines get stuck in the mud.
07:32
And I asked Sunny Spells to help me.
07:35
I see.
07:36
I didn't think you'd mind, sir.
07:39
Of course I don't mind.
07:40
I'm just wondering how I can help.
07:45
Rupert waits while the emperor thinks.
07:48
Sunny Spells, please bring me two bags of my very special grain.
07:55
I'll get them from the harvest cabinet.
07:57
I won't be long, he says as he leaves them.
08:00
I do hope I'm not putting you to a lot of trouble, sir, exclaims Rupert.
08:04
Why, of course not.
08:06
It's our pleasure to help people, especially with the harvest crops.
08:12
I have the two bags, emperor, says Sunny Spells.
08:16
Please give these to the miller, and tell him that neither of the bags will ever empty.
08:22
They are both extra special ones of corn and wheat, says the emperor.
08:28
Perhaps I'll see you again.
08:30
Goodbye for now.
08:31
The hat lands them once more by the mill.
08:37
Thank you, Sunny Spells.
08:39
The miller should be pleased with these, says Rupert as they unload the sacks.
08:43
Right, that's it then.
08:45
I must away.
08:46
And Rupert can still hear his laughter as he flies off.
08:55
Rupert, calls Bill.
08:57
Where have you been?
08:58
And where did you get those sacks from?
09:01
Oh, um, I've been to the land of harvest.
09:05
Here you are, sir.
09:06
You'll never, ever be without corn or wheat again.
09:11
What a wonderful surprise.
09:13
I shan't have to worry about the machines.
09:14
But I've got another problem now.
09:18
Oh, what's that, Mr. Miller?
09:20
Asks Rupert.
09:21
If only I could find the wooden pin for the mill wheel, I could start grinding again.
09:26
I'm sure I was here this morning lying beside the wheel.
09:30
Oh, I wonder.
09:33
It's an horrible old piece of wood.
09:35
I got it from that old building over there.
09:37
But it tastes awful.
09:39
There.
09:40
And Rupert remembers the piece of wood that Raggedy threw away.
09:43
Yes, I'm sure it's the bit.
09:46
Edward, you and Bill help the miller take the sacks inside.
09:49
I'll be back in a minute.
09:53
Yes, it's still here.
09:54
It must be the one.
09:57
Soon the pin that Rupert's found makes the wheel go round and round.
10:02
The miller's glad, no longer sad.
10:05
And soon the wheat and corn is ground.
10:09
Later, as Mrs. Bear is laying for tea, Rupert tells her all about the old mill.
10:15
And he showed us how it all worked.
10:16
So we'll have plenty to write about at school tomorrow.
10:19
Rupert, Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:35
Everyone's in his name.
10:39
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:42
Everyone come and join
10:46
In all of his games
10:48
Rupert, Rupert the Bell
10:52
Everyone come and join
10:56
In all of his games
