00:00Today, Rupert helps the Scarecrow in Rupert and the Old Coat.

00:30There's a million stories to be told, all the things that he's done, and he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.

00:43Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name. Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.

01:06Mrs. Bear has decided it's time she cleared out some of the old clothes in the wardrobes.

01:11And Rupert enjoys helping her. Oh, Rupert, you do look funny. But it's time for school.

01:19Yes, I can see Bill and Edward at the gate. I'd better be off.

01:24That's right, dear. On your way out, would you throw me Daddy's old coat off the hall stand? It's time that went into the rubbish bag.

01:33Here you are, Mummy. But I don't think you'll be very popular when Daddy hears that you've thrown out his old coat. Bye.

01:40Oh well. He'll have to find something else to wear in the garden.

01:45Shoo! Shoo! Ratted birds. There won't be any seeds left in the ground if they keep on eating them. Shoo! Shoo!

01:54Good afternoon, Farmer Talmud. What a lot of birds in your field. Isn't the scarecrow working today?

02:01Hello. I don't know what's happened to old scarecrow. He was here yesterday. Gave him a new coat I did.

02:08And what thanks do I get? Why, none at all. Just leaves me with a field full of birds and not much seeds left.

02:15If we hadn't got to go to school this afternoon, we'd love to keep them away, wouldn't we?

02:20Yes. Father. Shoo! Shoo! Shoo!

02:28And the chums leave the poor farmer shooing and flapping his arms to scare the birds.

02:34Right. It's a lovely afternoon. Shall we take advantage of the weather and go on a nature ramble?

02:40Oh yes, sir. Oh yes, sir. Good. We'll see how many different leaves we can collect.

02:47Oh, and one other thing. I accidentally left my coat on the common yesterday.

02:54And when I remembered it, I went back there, but it was gone.

02:58So perhaps you'll all keep an eye open for it while we're collecting our leaves.

03:02Now, off we go.

03:04Out on the common, it really is a lovely day.

03:08Rupert, with his friends Bill Badger, Poggy Pig and Edward Trunk, are trying to get some leaves from a tree.

03:14But Rupert has heard something from some nearby bushes.

03:19He wanders off on his own to investigate.

03:22What's that?

03:26It must be some...

03:28Oh, it's you! Mr. Scarecrow!

03:31Whatever's the matter, you sound very unhappy.

03:33That's because I am unhappy, Rupert Bear.

03:39Why? And why are you wrapped in that blanket? Are you cold?

03:45No, I don't feel the cold any time, but I've got nothing else to wear.

03:51Leastways, I have got a horrible new coat that no self-respecting Scarecrow would think of wearing.

03:59What do you mean?

04:01Well, this morning, Rupert, old farmer Turmert came over and put a smart new coat on me.

04:08Ugh! Then he took the old one, Rupert, and he burned it on his bonfire.

04:15But why are you sitting here?

04:17Because I couldn't wear a new coat, could I?

04:22So I went home, when the old farmer had gone away, and I took the thing off and I put this blanket round me because I had to come out for food.

04:30Well, I wonder if one of my friends could help with some of his old clothes.

04:35Let's go and see Mr. Grimnasty.

04:37Mr. Grimnasty has just got up. He sleeps at very odd hours, because he's a very odd man.

04:45Hello, Rupert Bear. What do you want? I'm not in a very good mood today. Raggedy kept me awake all night.

04:51Hello, Rupert Bear. He's not in a very good mood today. I've kept him awake all night. Who's your friend?

04:57This is Scarecrow. And he's come to see if Mr. Grimnasty has got an old coat for him to wear.

05:04You see, Farmer Turmott burned the coat he had.

05:07Well, if you know, I don't have any old clothes. All my clothes are new and clean and respectable.

05:13Go on. Give him your best coat. It's the only thing you've got that's good enough for a Scarecrow.

05:19Well, if you know, Raggedy, that all my clothes are fit for a king.

05:23All my clothes are fit for a king.

05:29Now, what is it you want of me? Be quick. My time is valuable.

05:34Oh, yes. Now, I remember, you have come to beg a coat for this miserable subject of mine.

05:40What are you?

05:42I'm a Scarecrow, if it pleases your Majesty.

05:46Yes, it pleases me. We've got to have someone to keep the birds off the scenes.

05:51Now, where were we?

05:54Oh, yes, a coat. Where's that scullion, Raggedy? Raggedy!

05:59Yes, your Majesty. I'm here, your Majesty. What can I do for your Majesty?

06:04Get to my wardrobe and bring me some coats.

06:07At once, your Majesty. At once.

06:08That's not quick enough, you must do better than that.

06:14Now, Crow Scare, try these on.

06:17Oh, your Majesty, they're too good for me. I only wear rags, as you can see.

06:22These beautiful coats have never been worn.

06:25But the one I wear must be old and torn, with a pocket gown and the elbows thin, and a sleeve held on with a safety pin.

06:33What, you ungrateful beanpole! The best clothes in the land, and you refuse them!

06:40Oh, I'm tired of that game. What shall we play now?

06:44Well, I'm glad that's over. You're even worse with a crown on your head.

06:47Are your legs wood? I eat wood. Take your boots off. Let me get at them.

06:55Oh, Raggedy, behave yourself. That's not being helpful.

06:59Oh, right. I'll go and find something else to eat.

07:02And I'm going to bed. Why don't you go round to the rubbish dump?

07:06Someone must have thrown away an old coat this week.

07:09Rupert remembers the old coat that his mother is going to throw out.

07:12It's time that went into the rubbish bag.

07:16I've got an idea. Come home with me. And I think my mother has just the coat for you.

07:22Oh, Rupert, you mean that. An old coat, not a new one.

07:27Well, I suppose it's better than throwing it away. I must say you look a proper scarecrow in it.

07:34But he is a scarecrow, Mummy.

07:37Oh, Rupert, Mrs Bear, I'm so happy.

07:39I can flap my arms and scare the birds now.

07:43When I had the blanket on, I couldn't flap my arms or it fell off.

07:46Now I can go out and get something to eat. I look respectable now.

07:50When Mrs Bear hears that he hasn't eaten today,

07:54she asks the scarecrow to come back later and have some tea with Rupert.

07:58Then Rupert gets his magic chariot and flies the scarecrow back to his home.

08:01Thank you again, Rupert. I feel like going and scaring some crows now. I feel so happy.

08:15Oh, here. Would you take this new coat away? I don't want ever to see it again.

08:20Don't leave it on the common.

08:21What do you mean, don't leave it on the common?

08:24Well, that's where the farmer found it. He thought somebody had thrown it away, so he brought it and put it on me.

08:30I accidentally left my coat on the common yesterday, and when I remembered it, I went back there, but it was gone.

08:40Yes. Yes, I'll take the coat, and I know where to take it.

08:45The farmer won't get it again, don't worry.

08:48Now, I've just remembered that I should be with my school class on the common.

08:52I'll see you later. Cheerio.

08:53Cheerio.

08:56Rupert leaves his chariot behind the bush and hurries up to the master with the coat still over his arm.

09:05Rupert Bear, where have you been? The whole class has been looking for you.

09:10Why? You've found my coat. How clever of you. Well, I am pleased and no mistake.

09:17All right, everybody. School is finished for today. A very successful afternoon.

09:21Mmm, yes.

09:25Oh, that was scrumptious, Mrs Bear. Thank you very much. I couldn't eat another drop.

09:30Has anyone seen my old garden coat? It's gone from its hook.

09:35Oh, Mummy.

09:37That's it, isn't it?

09:40Oh, do you want it back, Mr Bear?

09:42Well, it's a ragged old coat, and I was going to throw it away this morning.

09:48It's only fit for a scarecrow.

09:50Oh! Oh, I do beg your pardon. I didn't mean...

09:54Don't apologize, Mrs Bear. Of course you're quite right.

09:57And that's why I didn't want that new coat.

10:00This one is just right for a scarecrow.

10:02Well, I expect I can find another old one somewhere, says Mr Bear kindly.

10:09Oh, thank you. I'll come and keep the birds off your seed beds whenever you want me.
