Today, Rupert helps to get spring started at Nutwood, in Rupert and the Late Winter.
00:16
There's a little bear, which has never seen before, who's a lot of fun.
00:23
Children everywhere, go to love him more and more, who's the number one.
00:30
There's a million stories to be told, of the things that he's done.
00:37
And he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:44
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.
00:51
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:57
In all of his games.
01:06
Something seems to have gone wrong with the weather at Nutwood.
01:10
It's springtime, but the snow is still thick on the ground, and it's as cold as ever.
01:16
That's the last of the coal on the fire now.
01:20
I don't know what we'll do this evening to keep warm.
01:23
That coal should have easily lasted the winter.
01:26
But it looks as though it's going to stay cold forever.
01:29
Maybe we can borrow some from somebody.
01:33
Yes, I was just thinking that.
01:35
I know the inventor has plenty, because he never thinks of lighting a fire.
01:40
He doesn't seem to feel the cold.
01:42
Be a dear, Rupert, and pop over there in your chariot.
01:45
It seems even colder at the inventor's.
01:49
And Rupert is surprised to see so many icicles.
01:52
They seem to be everywhere.
01:54
Gosh, look at all that ice.
01:57
I think it's colder here.
01:59
Must be because he never thinks of lighting his fire.
02:02
I hope the door isn't frozen up.
02:05
Ah, Rupert Bear.
02:07
Isn't it a lovely day?
02:09
And you're just the person I want to see.
02:12
Oh, good morning, sir.
02:14
Mommy said, yes, yes, tell your mother that the jam she sent me was very nice.
02:19
Yes, very nice.
02:20
Now, but sir.
02:22
Eh, what?
02:23
Now, it won't take you long in your chariot.
02:25
All I want you to do is to go to the station and collect my new evaporator.
02:30
It's for my latest invention.
02:32
The station master has phoned to say it's all ready for collection.
02:35
Well, um, I really...
02:38
Off you go now.
02:39
And when you bring my evaporator, I'll give you a lovely ice lolly.
02:44
Oh, well.
02:46
I suppose I'd better go to the station first and ask for some coal when I get back.
02:53
The high street looks quite a picture in its mantle of snow.
02:57
And he's just admiring it when Rupert spies an old friend.
03:01
Hello, Drizzle.
03:03
When is it going to get warmer?
03:04
Hello, Rupert Bear.
03:06
I don't know when it's going to get warmer.
03:09
Drizzle works for the Wizard of the Wind, who controls the weather.
03:13
You don't know?
03:14
Well, if you don't know, there must be something wrong.
03:17
That's just it, Rupert.
03:18
There is something wrong.
03:20
Spring should be here.
03:21
The Wizard had it on the cards a fortnight ago.
03:24
The Crocus and Daff should be up now.
03:26
And look at it.
03:27
Colder than ever.
03:28
And he's blaming me.
03:30
Horrible temper he's in.
03:31
Get down there, he says, and find out what's happening in Nutwood, he says.
03:36
Well, I'd like to help you, Drizzle, but I've got to go to the station and collect an evaporator.
03:40
And then I've got to borrow...
03:42
You've got to get a what?
03:44
Some coal.
03:45
No, no, no, from Nutwood Station.
03:47
You said you've got to collect something.
03:49
Oh, yes, an evaporator.
03:51
Hmm, that's what I thought you said, an evaporator.
03:53
What are you going to do with an evaporator, Rupert Bear?
03:57
I'm not going to do anything with it.
03:58
I'm just collecting it for the inventor.
04:00
It's for his latest invention.
04:03
That's the answer.
04:04
All my troubles are over.
04:05
You see, that evaporator is used on things like refrigerators.
04:09
The inventor is working on a cold-making machine.
04:12
If he's not careful, he'll freeze all of Nutwood to a block of ice.
04:16
Oh, dear.
04:17
What can we do?
04:19
Simple, isn't it?
04:21
All you do is leave that evaporator at the station where it can't do any harm.
04:25
Then go back to the inventor man and tell him to switch his machine off.
04:29
I'll go back to the Wizard of the Wind and tell him everything's all right now.
04:32
Cheerio.
04:35
I can't just stop my work like that, Rupert Bear.
04:39
It's revolutionary.
04:40
I shall be acclaimed all the world over.
04:44
I'll be called a genius.
04:47
Well, Drizzle says you'll have everybody in Nutwood frozen to a block of ice if you don't switch the machine off.
04:54
Hmm, yes.
04:55
I hadn't thought of that.
04:57
I thought the snow was hanging about rather a long time this year.
05:02
Shall I turn it off, sir?
05:04
Yes, please.
05:04
I must think of some way.
05:08
I can't go over the switch, sir.
05:10
I think it's frozen.
05:12
Oh, all right.
05:13
Here, let me.
05:15
Ah.
05:16
Ah.
05:17
Oh.
05:17
Oh, my goodness.
05:19
Look.
05:19
It came away in my hand.
05:21
Now we can't switch it off.
05:23
What will happen now?
05:25
Well, it'll just go on getting colder and colder.
05:28
It'll soon be as cold as the North Pole.
05:32
The North Pole.
05:33
Oh, that's where I could take it.
05:36
If we could get it into my chariot, I will take it to the North Pole.
05:40
Nobody will notice the cold up there.
05:42
Oh, what a splendid idea.
05:46
It'll be like sending coal to a coal mine, won't it?
05:51
Oh.
05:52
Oh.
05:55
Oh.
05:57
Oh.
05:58
Oh.
05:59
No.
06:00
It's too heavy.
06:01
Yes, I should have invented a lighter-than-air refrigerator.
06:07
Then it would float it behind the chariot while you towed it along.
06:13
The floating water.
06:14
Of course that's what we want.
06:17
Rupert tells the inventor of a spring of magic water,
06:21
which makes things lighter than air.
06:23
I'm going to see Gypsy Granny.
06:25
She knows where the spring is.
06:26
I hope I shan't be long.
06:27
Well, there's nothing better than a bit of magic when science lets you down.
06:35
Gypsy Granny, who lives in her caravan in the woods,
06:38
listens to Rupert's problem and shakes her head.
06:41
Oh, no, Rupert Bear.
06:44
I can't tell you where the floating water spring is.
06:47
It's magic.
06:49
Magic has to be kept a secret for special occasions.
06:53
But Gypsy Granny, if we don't get rid of this machine,
06:57
the weather will just go on getting colder and colder.
07:00
Well, all right.
07:01
I'll give you a special jug to collect it in.
07:05
When you've been to the spring,
07:07
you'll forget where it is,
07:08
so you won't be able to go back there
07:10
or tell anybody else about it.
07:13
Now come with me,
07:14
and I'll get the jug and tell you the way.
07:17
Meanwhile, Drizzle has run into trouble
07:20
with his master, the Wizard of the Wind.
07:22
What's the meaning of this, Drizzle?
07:25
You come up here telling me that everything is back to normal in Nutwood,
07:28
and, well, so it is, sir.
07:30
Rupert Bear's gone to switch off the machine I was telling you about,
07:33
so it must be getting warmer, mustn't it?
07:35
You shouldn't have left it to a little bear.
07:38
I sent you to do it.
07:40
Well, it was a simple enough job.
07:42
All he had to do was turn a little switch.
07:44
Doesn't need my skill to do that little thing.
07:47
Well, answer this.
07:50
Why is the temperature in Nutwood still going down?
07:54
Look at this chart.
07:58
Cooler.
08:00
Following Gypsy Granny's instructions,
08:03
Rupert has found the spring of magic water
08:05
and filled the special jug she gave him.
08:08
Right.
08:09
Here we go.
08:11
It's a good job it's magic water.
08:13
Otherwise, it would be frozen solid.
08:15
Now to get back to the inventor.
08:19
While Rupert has been getting the floating water from the spring,
08:22
the inventor has thought of a way to get the machine outside.
08:27
Look, Rupert.
08:28
I thought of a way to move the machine.
08:31
I got two broomsticks and put them underneath and rolled it forward.
08:35
Then moved the back roller to the front
08:37
and moved it forward a bit more and so on.
08:41
Do you think I've invented something?
08:44
No, sir.
08:45
Oh, I was afraid somebody had thought of it before.
08:50
I've got the water from the spring.
08:52
Is there a hole somewhere in the machine for me to pour it in?
08:55
Yes, there.
08:57
As Rupert pours the water into the back,
09:00
Drizzle comes floating down to them in his magic hat,
09:03
in which he does all his travelling.
09:05
What's going on here, Rupert Bear?
09:07
I thought I told you to switch that thing off and leave it off.
09:09
Can't trust anybody if you want something done.
09:12
Drizzle stops to watch the machine
09:15
as it slowly lifts off the ground.
09:19
Where's that going now?
09:21
I'm going to take it to the North Pole, Drizzle.
09:23
You see, the switch broke,
09:25
so we can't stop it making everything cold.
09:28
When we get it to the North Pole,
09:30
it can't do any harm, can it?
09:32
Here, give it to me.
09:33
I'm going to take it.
09:35
If I dump it beside the flag at the North Pole myself,
09:37
I'll be able to sleep easy tonight.
09:39
Goodbye, all.
09:41
Well, that's that.
09:43
Now, Rupert, that floating water.
09:46
I'm very interested in it for my next invention.
09:49
Where did you get it?
09:51
I don't remember, sir.
09:55
Mrs. Bear has come out into the garden
09:57
as Rupert arrives with a chariot full of coal.
10:00
Hello, Mummy.
10:01
The inventor's given me lots of coal.
10:03
Look.
10:05
Oh, we don't need that now, Rupert.
10:07
All of a sudden, it's turned nice and warm.
10:10
Look.
10:15
Oh, Drizzle must have reached the North Pole.
10:18
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:35
Everyone's telling his name.
10:39
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:42
Everyone's come and joined in all of his games.
10:49
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
