00:00Today, Rupert tries to be of some help in Rupert and the Light Situation.

00:30There's a million stories to be told, all the things that he's done, and he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.

00:43Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.

01:05What do you think I heard at school today? exclaims Rupert, hurrying into the living room.

01:11I've no idea, but I'm sure you're going to tell us, says Mrs Bear, smiling.

01:17Well, last night all the lights went out in the next village.

01:23Perhaps a wire broke, says Mr Bear.

01:26Oh yes, I didn't think of that.

01:30If all the lights go out in Nutwood, whatever will we do?

01:34Don't worry Mummy, I'll go and see the inventor.

01:38I'll give you some cakes for him, says Mrs Bear.

01:42Rupert seeks the inventor's aid, because his mother is afraid.

01:48For if the lights go out at night, he thinks she'll have an awful fright.

01:52Rupert arrives at the inventor's house, and knocks on the front door several times.

02:00Eventually, the door is opened.

02:02I hope I haven't disturbed you, sir, but I...

02:06Why, Rupert Bear, it's you, interrupts the inventor.

02:10Oh, sorry, sir.

02:12I thought perhaps you might be asleep, says Rupert, holding up the bag of cakes for him to see.

02:18Mummy asked me to give you these.

02:20Shall I come in?

02:22I suppose so, now that you're here.

02:24Did you want me for anything?

02:26Yes, sir.

02:28Mummy's rather worried in case the lights go out in Nutwood, explains Rupert.

02:33Oh, you'd better follow me.

02:35At the moment, I am trying to produce light without electricity, says the inventor.

02:41In the laboratory, there are flashing lights and crackling noises going on.

02:47Sir, what are these worm-like creatures in this plastic box for?

02:52Asks Rupert eagerly.

02:54Oh, don't touch them, Rupert.

02:56It's taken me ages to get the number I need for my experiment.

02:59They really are a kind of beetle, but funnily enough, they are called glow worms, explains the inventor.

03:08I know why they get that name.

03:10Because they glow, replies Rupert, laughing.

03:13But why have you got them for an experiment, sir?

03:16Well, you see, when it is dark, they give off light.

03:20I am trying to discover how they make it.

03:24What a splendid idea, sir.

03:26You might become famous if you get that problem solved.

03:30You're right when you call it a problem, Rupert.

03:33That's exactly what it is.

03:35I must go now.

03:37I'll tell Mummy that you're working on the light situation.

03:41Please thank her for the cakes that she kindly sent me.

03:52On his way back home, he flies over Tiger Lily's house.

03:56Oh, there's Tiger Lily in the garden.

04:06Hello, Tiger Lily, calls Rupert as he lands his chariot.

04:16The Chinese magician is busy playing tricks with a table.

04:24Asks the Chinese magician.

04:28The inventor is trying to produce light without electricity, says Rupert.

04:32That is very interesting, replies the magician.

04:36But we Chinese have our own lights.

04:39I know what we'll do.

04:41Have you got your chariot with you, Rupert?

04:44Yes, it's outside.

04:47Come, let us go.

04:49I hope you're not too squashed, sir, says Rupert.

04:53I'm afraid there's not much room.

05:21I have brought us to my homeland, replies the magician.

05:33It's all rather confusing to me at the moment.

05:36Ah, it soon won't be.

05:39Leave everything to me, laughs the magician.

05:42Ah, here comes my aunt.

05:45She must have been shopping.

05:47What a pleasant surprise.

05:49I have been to buy some new lanterns and I meet you, says Aunt Fulong.

05:55That is the reason we are here, remarks the magician.

05:59Why not come and have tea with me and explain everything, says Aunt Fulong.

06:04In the room there are several lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

06:11What beautiful lights they have here, says Rupert looking up.

06:16You see, Robert, light without electricity.

06:20Don't quite understand.

06:22Oh, yes.

06:23I think I know now, Rupert pauses.

06:28Yes, I have it.

06:29The lanterns have candles inside.

06:32Therefore, no need for electricity.

06:35Here comes tea, exclaims Tiger Lily.

06:38I hope you like china tea, Robert, says Aunt Fulong.

06:43Yes, thank you.

06:45I am very pleased that you brought me here, says Rupert looking around.

06:50There, everyone is happy.

06:53I think that we had better go now, remarks the magician.

06:56There you are, Rupert.

06:58Take these back to your mummy.

07:00You'll never know.

07:01She might need them one day, says Aunt Fulong, bringing two lovely Chinese lanterns.

07:08Oh, thank you.

07:10She'll be so pleased.

07:12Mummy was wondering what she would do without any electric light.

07:15Now there's no problem.

07:17Rupert, Tiger Lily and her father say goodbye to Aunt Fulong.

07:22To return to Rupert's chariot.

07:25You're right about your aunt, Tiger Lily.

07:28I do like her.

07:30He looks at the lanterns.

07:32Not because she gave me these.

07:34She's just nice.

07:36After dropping Tiger Lily and her father, Rupert goes straight home.

07:40I bet mummy will be surprised when I give her the Chinese lanterns.

07:45Rupert sees his mother watering the flowers.

07:49He's carrying the lanterns carefully.

07:52You'll never guess what I've got for you, mummy.

07:55They're very extra special, cries Rupert eagerly.

07:59Whatever are they, dear?

08:01They look beautiful.

08:03And you say they're for me?

08:05Asks Mrs. Bear.

08:06Yes, they're lanterns.

08:08All the way from China, says Rupert proudly.

08:12From China?

08:13Whatever next, dear.

08:15You won't have to worry about the lights anymore now.

08:18No, I won't.

08:20Did you go and see the inventor?

08:22Asks Mrs. Bear.

08:23Oh, yes.

08:24He thanks you for your cakes, says Rupert.

08:27What about me sending him one of these lanterns, in case his lights fail?

08:32I don't really need two.

08:34Yes, I'll take it to him right away.

08:37Be sure to tell him that when he wants it alight, he has to light the candle inside, explains Mrs. Bear.

08:44I will.

08:46I can just see him putting his glow worms inside the lantern and waiting for the light to show through, laughs Rupert.

08:52The inventor is still busy in his laboratory.

08:55You haven't made your discovery yet, have you, sir?

08:58If I had, I would probably have sent for you, Rupert.

09:02What do you want this time?

09:04I don't want anything.

09:06I've brought you something, says Rupert, trying hard not to let the inventor see the lantern.

09:11Oh, come along.

09:12I haven't all day to play games, you know, urges the inventor.

09:15You're hiding something.

09:16What is it?

09:17As you've not made your light discovery yet, I've brought you something that might solve everything.

09:23Everything?

09:24Asks the inventor, surprised.

09:26Yes, sir.

09:28Here you are.

09:29That's for you.

09:30How can I thank you?

09:33Ah, perhaps a few glow worms.

09:36Would you like some?

09:38Yes, I would.

09:40Thanks, says Rupert, holding out his hand.

09:43Here you are.

09:45Put them in a box with air holes and don't forget to feed them.

09:49The inventor gives the glow worms to Rupert.

09:52Oh, they tickle.

09:54I'm off home now, says Rupert, leaving the inventor looking at his lantern.

10:01Oh, Mummy, doesn't the lantern look great, exclaims Rupert, seeing it alight.

10:08But have the lights gone wrong?

10:11No, dear.

10:12But I think it looks more cosy.

10:14Don't you?
