Today, Rupert tries to be of some help in Rupert and the Light Situation.
00:30
There's a million stories to be told, all the things that he's done, and he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:43
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.
00:50
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:57
In all of his name.
01:05
What do you think I heard at school today? exclaims Rupert, hurrying into the living room.
01:11
I've no idea, but I'm sure you're going to tell us, says Mrs Bear, smiling.
01:17
Well, last night all the lights went out in the next village.
01:23
Perhaps a wire broke, says Mr Bear.
01:26
Oh yes, I didn't think of that.
01:30
If all the lights go out in Nutwood, whatever will we do?
01:34
Don't worry Mummy, I'll go and see the inventor.
01:38
I'll give you some cakes for him, says Mrs Bear.
01:42
Rupert seeks the inventor's aid, because his mother is afraid.
01:48
For if the lights go out at night, he thinks she'll have an awful fright.
01:52
Rupert arrives at the inventor's house, and knocks on the front door several times.
02:00
Eventually, the door is opened.
02:02
I hope I haven't disturbed you, sir, but I...
02:06
Why, Rupert Bear, it's you, interrupts the inventor.
02:10
Oh, sorry, sir.
02:12
I thought perhaps you might be asleep, says Rupert, holding up the bag of cakes for him to see.
02:18
Mummy asked me to give you these.
02:20
Shall I come in?
02:22
I suppose so, now that you're here.
02:24
Did you want me for anything?
02:26
Yes, sir.
02:28
Mummy's rather worried in case the lights go out in Nutwood, explains Rupert.
02:33
Oh, you'd better follow me.
02:35
At the moment, I am trying to produce light without electricity, says the inventor.
02:41
In the laboratory, there are flashing lights and crackling noises going on.
02:47
Sir, what are these worm-like creatures in this plastic box for?
02:52
Asks Rupert eagerly.
02:54
Oh, don't touch them, Rupert.
02:56
It's taken me ages to get the number I need for my experiment.
02:59
They really are a kind of beetle, but funnily enough, they are called glow worms, explains the inventor.
03:08
I know why they get that name.
03:10
Because they glow, replies Rupert, laughing.
03:13
But why have you got them for an experiment, sir?
03:16
Well, you see, when it is dark, they give off light.
03:20
I am trying to discover how they make it.
03:24
What a splendid idea, sir.
03:26
You might become famous if you get that problem solved.
03:30
You're right when you call it a problem, Rupert.
03:33
That's exactly what it is.
03:35
I must go now.
03:37
I'll tell Mummy that you're working on the light situation.
03:40
That's right.
03:41
Please thank her for the cakes that she kindly sent me.
03:44
Go along, Rupert, or I'll never get started.
03:48
Rupert flies off.
03:52
On his way back home, he flies over Tiger Lily's house.
03:56
Oh, there's Tiger Lily in the garden.
03:59
Her father is a Chinese magician.
04:02
And he might have some idea about lights.
04:06
Hello, Tiger Lily, calls Rupert as he lands his chariot.
04:10
Is your father at home?
04:12
Yes, he is.
04:14
Do you want to speak to him?
04:16
The Chinese magician is busy playing tricks with a table.
04:20
Hello, Rupert.
04:22
What can I do for you?
04:24
Asks the Chinese magician.
04:26
Do you know what?
04:28
The inventor is trying to produce light without electricity, says Rupert.
04:32
That is very interesting, replies the magician.
04:36
But we Chinese have our own lights.
04:39
I know what we'll do.
04:41
Have you got your chariot with you, Rupert?
04:44
Yes, it's outside.
04:46
Very good.
04:47
Come, let us go.
04:49
I hope you're not too squashed, sir, says Rupert.
04:53
I'm afraid there's not much room.
04:57
Very soon you will know, Rupert.
05:00
But not everyone depends upon electricity for light, explains the magician.
05:05
The chariot starts its journey east.
05:08
The magician knows the way at least.
05:10
He's off to see his native land.
05:13
And soon in China they will land.
05:16
Where are we?
05:19
He asks, looking round.
05:21
I have brought us to my homeland, replies the magician.
05:25
We are going to meet my sister.
05:28
Aunt Fulong, father.
05:30
Oh, Rupert, you are like her.
05:33
It's all rather confusing to me at the moment.
05:36
Ah, it soon won't be.
05:39
Leave everything to me, laughs the magician.
05:42
Ah, here comes my aunt.
05:45
She must have been shopping.
05:47
What a pleasant surprise.
05:49
I have been to buy some new lanterns and I meet you, says Aunt Fulong.
05:55
That is the reason we are here, remarks the magician.
05:59
Why not come and have tea with me and explain everything, says Aunt Fulong.
06:04
In the room there are several lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
06:11
What beautiful lights they have here, says Rupert looking up.
06:16
You see, Robert, light without electricity.
06:20
Don't quite understand.
06:22
Oh, yes.
06:23
I think I know now, Rupert pauses.
06:28
Yes, I have it.
06:29
The lanterns have candles inside.
06:32
Therefore, no need for electricity.
06:35
Here comes tea, exclaims Tiger Lily.
06:38
I hope you like china tea, Robert, says Aunt Fulong.
06:43
Yes, thank you.
06:45
I am very pleased that you brought me here, says Rupert looking around.
06:50
There, everyone is happy.
06:53
I think that we had better go now, remarks the magician.
06:56
There you are, Rupert.
06:58
Take these back to your mummy.
07:00
You'll never know.
07:01
She might need them one day, says Aunt Fulong, bringing two lovely Chinese lanterns.
07:08
Oh, thank you.
07:10
She'll be so pleased.
07:12
Mummy was wondering what she would do without any electric light.
07:15
Now there's no problem.
07:17
Rupert, Tiger Lily and her father say goodbye to Aunt Fulong.
07:22
To return to Rupert's chariot.
07:25
You're right about your aunt, Tiger Lily.
07:28
I do like her.
07:30
He looks at the lanterns.
07:32
Not because she gave me these.
07:34
She's just nice.
07:36
After dropping Tiger Lily and her father, Rupert goes straight home.
07:40
I bet mummy will be surprised when I give her the Chinese lanterns.
07:45
Rupert sees his mother watering the flowers.
07:49
He's carrying the lanterns carefully.
07:52
You'll never guess what I've got for you, mummy.
07:55
They're very extra special, cries Rupert eagerly.
07:59
Whatever are they, dear?
08:01
They look beautiful.
08:03
And you say they're for me?
08:05
Asks Mrs. Bear.
08:06
Yes, they're lanterns.
08:08
All the way from China, says Rupert proudly.
08:12
From China?
08:13
Whatever next, dear.
08:15
You won't have to worry about the lights anymore now.
08:18
No, I won't.
08:20
Did you go and see the inventor?
08:22
Asks Mrs. Bear.
08:23
Oh, yes.
08:24
He thanks you for your cakes, says Rupert.
08:27
What about me sending him one of these lanterns, in case his lights fail?
08:32
I don't really need two.
08:34
Yes, I'll take it to him right away.
08:37
Be sure to tell him that when he wants it alight, he has to light the candle inside, explains Mrs. Bear.
08:44
I will.
08:46
I can just see him putting his glow worms inside the lantern and waiting for the light to show through, laughs Rupert.
08:52
The inventor is still busy in his laboratory.
08:55
You haven't made your discovery yet, have you, sir?
08:58
If I had, I would probably have sent for you, Rupert.
09:02
What do you want this time?
09:04
I don't want anything.
09:06
I've brought you something, says Rupert, trying hard not to let the inventor see the lantern.
09:11
Oh, come along.
09:12
I haven't all day to play games, you know, urges the inventor.
09:15
You're hiding something.
09:16
What is it?
09:17
As you've not made your light discovery yet, I've brought you something that might solve everything.
09:23
Everything?
09:24
Asks the inventor, surprised.
09:26
Yes, sir.
09:28
Here you are.
09:29
That's for you.
09:30
How can I thank you?
09:33
Ah, perhaps a few glow worms.
09:36
Would you like some?
09:38
Yes, I would.
09:40
Thanks, says Rupert, holding out his hand.
09:43
Here you are.
09:45
Put them in a box with air holes and don't forget to feed them.
09:49
The inventor gives the glow worms to Rupert.
09:52
Oh, they tickle.
09:54
I'm off home now, says Rupert, leaving the inventor looking at his lantern.
10:01
Oh, Mummy, doesn't the lantern look great, exclaims Rupert, seeing it alight.
10:08
But have the lights gone wrong?
10:11
No, dear.
10:12
But I think it looks more cosy.
10:14
Don't you?
10:15
Rupert, Rupert the Bell
10:18
Every one come and join,
10:19
Do you, do you love you?
10:20
Things like it, is something true.
10:24
You come on, then…
10:25
There you are!
10:26
You come on, but you're trying to catch me out!
10:30
Can't take me out, but you're right.
10:31
You're right!
10:33
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.
10:39
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join in all of his games.
10:50
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join in all of his games.
