A very different week ahead compared to last week. High pressure will keep things largely dry. Fog will become more widespread and frosts will reduce, with a change to wetter weather possible this weekend. Alex Deakin has the details.

00:00Welcome to your weather for the week

00:01ahead from the Met Office, a very

00:04different week this week compared

00:06to last week when it was all about

00:07strong winds and heavy rain.

00:09And most places across the country

00:12are going to have a dry week, an

00:13increasing chance of seeing some

00:15thickening fog patches.

00:17And after a frosty start for many,

00:19the nights will turn a little bit

00:21milder generally as the week goes

00:23on. But yes, dry weather for

00:25the majority, and that's because of

00:27an area of high pressure.

00:28And it's a big boy as well.

00:30This has been dominating the

00:32weather throughout the weekend.

00:33It will still control our weather,

00:35but as we run through the week, it

00:36does slowly start to drift

00:39away to the west.

00:40And as it does so, particularly

00:41through the middle of the week,

00:43weather fronts will start to drift

00:45southwards across the country.

00:46And then we're looking out to the

00:48northwest as this area of low

00:49pressure could be

00:51the start of a more significant

00:53change as we go towards the

00:55weekend.

00:56That's all to come, though.

00:57Let's get back to the nitty gritty,

00:59the details for this week.

01:00With high pressure in control, most

01:02of us having another dry day on

01:03Tuesday. I say most because there

01:05will be some rain at times across

01:07western parts of Scotland, maybe

01:08even Aberdeenshire, seeing a few

01:10spots. But a good chunk of the

01:11country having a dry day on

01:13Tuesday. It's going to start

01:14frosty across the south and

01:16there'll be some stubborn fog

01:18patches around as well.

01:19But once they've cleared, we should

01:21again see some sunshine here in

01:22northeast England, also seeing

01:24some sunny spells.

01:25Fair bit of cloud around, though,

01:26elsewhere with the help of some

01:28sunshine temperatures struggling

01:30up after that frosty start to five,

01:32six, seven Celsius.

01:33Again, it'll be mildest across

01:35Scotland, but it will be quite

01:37grey here with that rain across the

01:39Highlands and the Western Isles.

01:40There's the high pressure still

01:42close by as we go into

01:44Wednesday. This weather front just

01:45trickling southwards, though not

01:47bringing much rain, but certainly

01:49introducing more and more clouds.

01:51So it won't be quite as frosty

01:52on Wednesday morning, although we'll

01:54still see some across the south.

01:55And again, there could be some fog

01:57around. Now on Wednesday, there'll

01:58be holes in the cloud across eastern

02:00Scotland, northeast England

02:02that could allow temperatures to get

02:04up to 11, 12 degrees

02:06Celsius. But again, there'll be

02:07patchy rain across western

02:08Scotland. Most of the parts will

02:10be dry, but not as much

02:12sunshine across the south.

02:14Generally, that cloud increasing as

02:16we go through Wednesday and into

02:17Thursday means the mornings won't

02:19be as frosty, even though the high

02:21pressure is still controlling

02:22things. But it's just slinking

02:24further away by Thursday.

02:25And then this next weather front

02:27just toppling in over the top, that

02:29will bring a bit more cloud and rain

02:30over the Northern Isles, the Western

02:32Isles and western Scotland.

02:34Again, with the winds coming in from

02:35the southwest, we could see some

02:36sunshine across that far

02:38northeastern corner of the mainland

02:39and that could see temperatures

02:41again getting up to 11, maybe

02:4312 Celsius.

02:44For the majority, it's a

02:46grey day on Thursday, a lot of cloud

02:48around and more in the way of mist

02:49and fog, especially over higher

02:52routes. But it is also slowly,

02:53but surely turning a bit milder as

02:55well because we're not having those

02:57frosts overnight.

02:58So we're not starting as low

02:59temperatures by the afternoon,

03:01picking up to 8, 9, maybe 10

03:03Celsius. But of course, it won't be

03:04as sunny, so it won't perhaps feel

03:06as nice.

03:07The high pressure is well and truly

03:08gone by the time we get to Thursday

03:10night and into Friday.

03:11And this weather front will have a

03:12bit more about it as it slinks

03:14southwards during Friday.

03:15Some uncertainty about the position,

03:17but it will probably bring a band of

03:19cloud and rain across Scotland,

03:20Northern Ireland, perhaps into parts

03:22of northern England later.

03:23But again, across the south, it is

03:24looking largely dry on Friday and

03:26further north behind that cold front

03:28may start to brighten up, but

03:30it could also then start to turn

03:32a bit colder with temperatures back

03:33down into the mid-single figures

03:35as they will be quite widely across

03:37the country.

03:38As I said, some uncertainty about

03:39the position of that weather front,

03:40but it slinks southwards, clears

03:42away and then we're looking out to

03:44the west.

03:45Again, the position of this low

03:46opens to some doubt at this stage.

03:48We're talking four or five days

03:50ahead, but that's where the system

03:52is set to bring more of a change.

03:54Notice more ice bars across the

03:55charts on Saturday, while many look

03:57like starting the weekend dry

03:59may not end that way as that low

04:01could just be the first of many.

04:02This daisy chain of weather fronts

04:04and this is the jet stream showing

04:06signs of pepping up and perhaps

04:08turning our weather much more

04:09unsettled as we go into

04:11next week and the changeover

04:13happening this weekend as the breeze

04:14starts to pick up and many of us

04:16will finally see some rain.

04:18Before that, though, many of us will

04:20have a dry week.
