Met Office

14/10/2024
A very different week ahead compared to last week. High pressure will keep things largely dry. Fog will become more widespread and frosts will reduce, with a change to wetter weather possible this weekend. Alex Deakin has the details.

Welcome to your weather for the week
00:01
ahead from the Met Office, a very
00:04
different week this week compared
00:06
to last week when it was all about
00:07
strong winds and heavy rain.
00:09
And most places across the country
00:12
are going to have a dry week, an
00:13
increasing chance of seeing some
00:15
thickening fog patches.
00:17
And after a frosty start for many,
00:19
the nights will turn a little bit
00:21
milder generally as the week goes
00:23
on. But yes, dry weather for
00:25
the majority, and that's because of
00:27
an area of high pressure.
00:28
And it's a big boy as well.
00:30
This has been dominating the
00:32
weather throughout the weekend.
00:33
It will still control our weather,
00:35
but as we run through the week, it
00:36
does slowly start to drift
00:39
away to the west.
00:40
And as it does so, particularly
00:41
through the middle of the week,
00:43
weather fronts will start to drift
00:45
southwards across the country.
00:46
And then we're looking out to the
00:48
northwest as this area of low
00:49
pressure could be
00:51
the start of a more significant
00:53
change as we go towards the
00:55
weekend.
00:56
That's all to come, though.
00:57
Let's get back to the nitty gritty,
00:59
the details for this week.
01:00
With high pressure in control, most
01:02
of us having another dry day on
01:03
Tuesday. I say most because there
01:05
will be some rain at times across
01:07
western parts of Scotland, maybe
01:08
even Aberdeenshire, seeing a few
01:10
spots. But a good chunk of the
01:11
country having a dry day on
01:13
Tuesday. It's going to start
01:14
frosty across the south and
01:16
there'll be some stubborn fog
01:18
patches around as well.
01:19
But once they've cleared, we should
01:21
again see some sunshine here in
01:22
northeast England, also seeing
01:24
some sunny spells.
01:25
Fair bit of cloud around, though,
01:26
elsewhere with the help of some
01:28
sunshine temperatures struggling
01:30
up after that frosty start to five,
01:32
six, seven Celsius.
01:33
Again, it'll be mildest across
01:35
Scotland, but it will be quite
01:37
grey here with that rain across the
01:39
Highlands and the Western Isles.
01:40
There's the high pressure still
01:42
close by as we go into
01:44
Wednesday. This weather front just
01:45
trickling southwards, though not
01:47
bringing much rain, but certainly
01:49
introducing more and more clouds.
01:51
So it won't be quite as frosty
01:52
on Wednesday morning, although we'll
01:54
still see some across the south.
01:55
And again, there could be some fog
01:57
around. Now on Wednesday, there'll
01:58
be holes in the cloud across eastern
02:00
Scotland, northeast England
02:02
that could allow temperatures to get
02:04
up to 11, 12 degrees
02:06
Celsius. But again, there'll be
02:07
patchy rain across western
02:08
Scotland. Most of the parts will
02:10
be dry, but not as much
02:12
sunshine across the south.
02:14
Generally, that cloud increasing as
02:16
we go through Wednesday and into
02:17
Thursday means the mornings won't
02:19
be as frosty, even though the high
02:21
pressure is still controlling
02:22
things. But it's just slinking
02:24
further away by Thursday.
02:25
And then this next weather front
02:27
just toppling in over the top, that
02:29
will bring a bit more cloud and rain
02:30
over the Northern Isles, the Western
02:32
Isles and western Scotland.
02:34
Again, with the winds coming in from
02:35
the southwest, we could see some
02:36
sunshine across that far
02:38
northeastern corner of the mainland
02:39
and that could see temperatures
02:41
again getting up to 11, maybe
02:43
12 Celsius.
02:44
For the majority, it's a
02:46
grey day on Thursday, a lot of cloud
02:48
around and more in the way of mist
02:49
and fog, especially over higher
02:52
routes. But it is also slowly,
02:53
but surely turning a bit milder as
02:55
well because we're not having those
02:57
frosts overnight.
02:58
So we're not starting as low
02:59
temperatures by the afternoon,
03:01
picking up to 8, 9, maybe 10
03:03
Celsius. But of course, it won't be
03:04
as sunny, so it won't perhaps feel
03:06
as nice.
03:07
The high pressure is well and truly
03:08
gone by the time we get to Thursday
03:10
night and into Friday.
03:11
And this weather front will have a
03:12
bit more about it as it slinks
03:14
southwards during Friday.
03:15
Some uncertainty about the position,
03:17
but it will probably bring a band of
03:19
cloud and rain across Scotland,
03:20
Northern Ireland, perhaps into parts
03:22
of northern England later.
03:23
But again, across the south, it is
03:24
looking largely dry on Friday and
03:26
further north behind that cold front
03:28
may start to brighten up, but
03:30
it could also then start to turn
03:32
a bit colder with temperatures back
03:33
down into the mid-single figures
03:35
as they will be quite widely across
03:37
the country.
03:38
As I said, some uncertainty about
03:39
the position of that weather front,
03:40
but it slinks southwards, clears
03:42
away and then we're looking out to
03:44
the west.
03:45
Again, the position of this low
03:46
opens to some doubt at this stage.
03:48
We're talking four or five days
03:50
ahead, but that's where the system
03:52
is set to bring more of a change.
03:54
Notice more ice bars across the
03:55
charts on Saturday, while many look
03:57
like starting the weekend dry
03:59
may not end that way as that low
04:01
could just be the first of many.
04:02
This daisy chain of weather fronts
04:04
and this is the jet stream showing
04:06
signs of pepping up and perhaps
04:08
turning our weather much more
04:09
unsettled as we go into
04:11
next week and the changeover
04:13
happening this weekend as the breeze
04:14
starts to pick up and many of us
04:16
will finally see some rain.
04:18
Before that, though, many of us will
04:20
have a dry week.
