Lots going on with the weather this week. We start with further rain, then turn cold and bright before the remnants of a hurricane bring uncertainty to the forecast at the end of the working week. Alex Deakin has more.

Hello, welcome to your weather for the
00:02
week ahead from the Met Office.
00:04
There's an awful lot going on over
00:06
the next five to seven days.
00:07
It kind of breaks down into three
00:09
with more wet weather to come over
00:11
the next day or two.
00:13
There are warnings in force.
00:15
If you're after some sunshine this
00:16
week, then Wednesday is your best
00:18
bet, generally looking dry and
00:20
bright. But it is going to be
00:22
quite a cold start to the day
00:24
with some places seeing a touch
00:26
of frost.
00:27
And then at the end of the week,
00:28
well, there's a lot of uncertainty
00:30
thanks to what is currently
00:32
a hurricane, Hurricane Lorenzo.
00:35
Now, this storm is a long,
00:37
long way from the UK at the moment.
00:39
It is a pretty powerful storm.
00:41
Nonetheless, it will be drifting its
00:42
way northwards as it does so
00:44
as it approaches the UK.
00:46
It will no longer be a hurricane,
00:48
but it could throw some wet and
00:49
windy weather our way.
00:51
Even before that, we do have plenty
00:53
of wet and windy weather over the
00:54
next couple of days.
00:55
As I mentioned, an area of low
00:56
pressure bringing rain across the
00:58
country during Monday and Tuesday.
01:00
And there are warnings in force
01:02
really reaching northern Scotland.
01:04
Here, it'll be a bright but cold
01:06
start to Tuesday, some heavy
01:08
showers in the far north, a dull
01:10
damp day over parts of northern
01:11
England, particularly east of the
01:12
Pennines in the south.
01:14
It's all about heavy showers
01:15
breaking out and
01:17
they could cause some problems.
01:19
We've had a lot of rain recently.
01:21
There'll be a lot of spray and
01:22
surface water on the roads where
01:23
those showers break out,
01:24
particularly through the evening
01:26
rush hour. So there may be some
01:28
travel disruption.
01:29
We do have a yellow warning in
01:30
force for that.
01:31
Should brighten up in southern
01:32
Scotland and Northern Ireland
01:33
through the day, get some afternoon
01:35
sunshine here, but it won't be warm
01:37
temperatures struggling to get into
01:38
the teens, particularly chilly
01:40
in northern Scotland.
01:41
Whereas in the south, if we get a
01:42
bit of brightness, actually we could
01:44
see highs of 18 or 19
01:46
Celsius, but there will be heavy
01:48
showers never too far
01:50
away.
01:51
Now, that low pressure bringing the
01:52
showery rain does ebb away on
01:54
Tuesday evening and then the winds
01:55
start to come down from the north.
01:56
That's going to bring a real chill
01:58
right across the country on
02:00
Wednesday morning.
02:01
We will see some pockets of frost
02:03
in rural areas anywhere from
02:05
northern England northwards.
02:06
But even in the south, it's going to
02:07
be a lot colder on Wednesday morning
02:09
than recent mornings.
02:10
Still quite blustery across the
02:12
northeast and down the east coast
02:13
generally.
02:14
A small chance of one or two
02:15
showers, but for most places
02:17
looking dry and fine on Wednesday,
02:19
we should see a fair bit of
02:20
sunshine and
02:22
yes, as I say, the best chance of
02:24
some sunshine through the course of
02:25
this week. But look at the
02:26
temperatures.
02:27
We're only struggling into the
02:28
teens in many places.
02:29
So that's going to feel quite a lot
02:31
fresher on Wednesday.
02:33
Then what happens after that?
02:35
Well, as I say, there's still quite
02:36
a bit of uncertainty about exactly
02:38
how Lorenzo changes from
02:40
a hurricane into a normal area of
02:42
low pressure.
02:43
That'll probably happen during
02:44
Wednesday or into Thursday.
02:46
But even though it's not a
02:47
hurricane anymore, you can still
02:49
see there's a lot of isobars of
02:50
that chart. It could be very windy
02:51
and it will be bringing a lot of
02:53
moisture and a lot of rain.
02:54
But where exactly?
02:56
That is still open to some doubt.
02:59
At the moment, it looks like
03:00
Western areas will see a bit of
03:01
that rain coming in on Thursday
03:03
and we could also start to see the
03:04
winds picking up as well.
03:06
But for many, Thursday, again,
03:07
looking dry and bright, certainly
03:08
to start with, just a question of
03:10
how quickly this rain spreads in
03:12
associated with that
03:14
old storm.
03:15
Now, it's not unusual for there to
03:17
be this much uncertainty about the
03:18
position of something like this
03:20
at this stage because it's
03:22
highly energetic.
03:23
It affects the atmosphere and it
03:25
does create more uncertainty.
03:26
But this low could drift to the
03:28
north and maybe even bend back
03:30
round towards Greenland.
03:31
It could move more across central
03:33
parts of the UK or it could drive
03:35
down to the southwest.
03:37
And the exact position intensity
03:39
of the low will really have enough
03:41
impact and effect on the exact
03:43
weather that we see across the UK.
03:45
It is uncertain at this stage.
03:47
So the best thing to do is to keep
03:48
up to date. Stay tuned to the
03:50
forecast. There is the potential
03:52
for a wet and windy spell.
03:53
But details will be uncertain
03:55
for the next couple of days, at
03:57
least. But as I say, keep up to
03:58
date. That's the best message at
04:00
this stage.
04:01
