Week Ahead β More rain, but then a change
Met Office
Follow
14/10/2024
After a couple of increasingly windy and wet days (with further rain warnings in force) the weather looks like shifting as we head into December. Colder air heading south will bring drier and sunnier and frostier weather at the end of the week.

Hello. Welcome to your forecast for the rest of November from the Met Office.
00:04
The end of the week should see something drier and a little bit colder, but for
00:09
the next few days we do have to deal with further rain and there are warnings
00:12
in force. It's also going to turn pretty gusty, especially through Tuesday and
00:16
Wednesday and for a time on Thursday. But then, after that, it should be turning
00:22
drier and brighter with some sunshine, but it will also be turning colder once
00:26
more with the return of nighttime frosts. So that's how the week shapes up
00:30
in summary. Let's put some detail on, take a look at the bigger picture. Why more
00:34
rain over the next couple of days? Well, here's your answer. This area of low
00:38
pressure, quite intense out in the Atlantic, a lot of isobars attached to
00:42
that, so that will be bringing some stronger winds. But it's the rain
00:44
initially that we're concerned about in the southwest, but the rain doesn't stop
00:48
there. It then spreads across most of England, Wales, Northern Ireland by
00:52
lunchtime on Tuesday and then into central and southern Scotland. Following
00:56
on behind, it should brighten up a little on Tuesday afternoon. There'll be
00:59
some bright or sunny spells, but there'll also be a whole host of showers coming
01:03
into the south. Heavy, blustery, maybe even thundery showers at times. With the
01:08
winds coming up from the south, though, it will be relatively mild, certainly
01:11
compared to this time last week. Temperatures getting into the teens,
01:13
still feeling pretty chilly under that rain band through central and southern
01:17
Scotland. That low pressure then controls the weather through the middle of the
01:21
week. It tends to weaken a little bit. It's not as intense, but could bring some
01:24
very wet and windy weather to parts of Ireland. And on its southern flank, we'll
01:29
see some gusty winds during Wednesday, so it could get very blustery along the
01:32
south coast. Again, we have that rain warning in force over southwest England
01:36
and South Wales. More rain falling onto very soggy ground. And also for Wednesday
01:41
into Thursday, there's a warning in force over parts of northeast England. Again,
01:45
more rain falling to areas that have seen a lot of rain recently. Won't rain
01:50
everywhere all day around that area of low pressure. There'll be some brighter
01:54
spells spiralling in as well. Temperatures, again, single figures. Most
01:58
of Scotland's and the far north of England, further south, 11 or 12, but
02:02
feeling colder because of the gusty winds, especially along the south coast
02:05
and because of the rain as well. That low pressure is trying to pull away, though,
02:10
on Wednesday night and into Thursday. Follow the ice bars, though, they point up
02:14
to the north. That's why we're seeing the change to colder weather. Northern
02:19
Ireland, Scotland's, we'll see that first on Thursday. But the rain should be
02:22
pulling away. So it turns drier and brighter. That rain's still in evidence
02:26
across a good part of England and Wales through the day. And temperatures will
02:30
be just starting to fall away, eight, nine at best across the north and
02:34
feeling colder because of the strength of the wind. The low continues to pull
02:38
away. High pressure building in from Iceland. And between the two, the winds
02:41
coming down from the north, bringing that colder air to all areas by the time
02:46
we get to Friday and into the start of the weekend. So we'll see a return of
02:50
widespread nighttime frosts by the end of the week. But we should also see the
02:55
return of generally dry and bright weather. Now, those northerly winds will
02:59
bring showers down the North Sea coast and particularly across northeast
03:02
Scotland, where there'll be some snow on the hills. Nothing unusual about that.
03:06
But for most, it's just a dry, bright, but cold feeling day with temperatures.
03:09
Look at that. Six, seven degrees at best. Add that wind on, it'll feel a lot
03:13
colder on the east coast. It stays cold into the start of the weekend. But will
03:19
it last? An air of low pressure is trying to push in. This is a few days
03:22
away, so it's quite uncertain about the track of this low. But it could bring a
03:26
bit more wet weather across the south into Saturday. Just a possibility at
03:30
this stage. But for many, the moment the weekend looks like certainly starting
03:35
cold and frosty, but much of the weekend will be dry. As I said, that rain in
03:38
the south is something we'll be keeping a close eye on, keeping you updated
03:42
through the rest of this week. There are warnings in force. Make sure you stay
03:45
up to date with those. Best way to do that, follow us on social media.
