A week of blustery autumnal weather. Often windy and showery with some longer spells of rain later. Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern has the week ahead forecast.

00:00Hello and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the week ahead. A week of

00:04classic autumnal weather and by that I mean it's going to be often blustery.

00:08There'll be some heavy showers over the next few days and then by the end of the

00:11week perhaps some more prolonged spells of rain. Leaves will be blown off trees,

00:16there'll be puddles around. Nothing says autumn more than a deep low to the

00:20northwest of the UK. That's sent some weather fronts across the country on

00:23Monday, more prolonged rainfall. That clears through for Tuesday and then with

00:27that low pressure staying close by over the next few days essentially it's going

00:30to drive more and more showers our way. Virtually anywhere could see a shower

00:33first thing Tuesday. But the heaviest and most prolonged showers likely northern

00:38and western Scotland. Coastal gales here as well, some very lively conditions.

00:41Eastern Scotland, southern Scotland, Northern Ireland relatively unscathed

00:44but showers possible here as well and then we come further south. By the

00:48afternoon into England and Wales and some heavy rain clears through along

00:52with a gusty wind. In fact the wind gusts around the Pennines in particular,

00:55something to keep an eye on through Tuesday. 40-50 mile per hour gusts

00:59possible in places. Cool with that blustery wind as well but still high

01:04teens possible in the southeast. Now the jet stream at the moment is wriggling

01:09its way across the North Atlantic and pointed in our general direction but

01:13subtle changes in the shape of that jet stream over the next few days make a

01:17difference in terms of shower distribution. A subtle dip in the jet

01:21stream crossing the country through Wednesday, you can see it there, crossing

01:25the UK means an increase in showers for the middle part of the week and in fact

01:29I think that many areas will be very lively on Wednesday. Some particularly

01:34potent downpours coming through as that dip in the jet stream crosses west to

01:39east. Especially west-southwest Britain, hail and thunder possible in some of the

01:43heavier downpours and those showers crossing all parts through the day along

01:47with a blustery breeze and it will feel cool. But still some sunshine away from

01:51the showers, umbrellas going up and down I suspect through the day. Now that jet

01:55stream dip moves away and then a brief bump edges north helping to kill off

02:01some of the showers through Thursday but you'll notice the jet stream also en

02:06route to the UK collects a couple of weather fronts and sends them to

02:10southern portions of Britain and that means that south and southwest England

02:15as well as South Wales could see some more prolonged rainfall for a time on

02:19Thursday and some thicker cloud. Further north fewer showers compared to Wednesday

02:23an increase in sunshine particularly in the east but it's still going to be cool

02:28it's still going to be essentially a showery changeable kind of day. After a

02:34few days of showers the weather turns a little bit more unsettled as it heading

02:38into Thursday night and Friday. This low pressure starts to move in and there's

02:43some uncertainty about the track and depth of this but it could lead to some

02:47very windy weather for southern parts of Britain especially south and

02:51southwest England, Wales and those winds and outbreaks of rain crossing many

02:56parts of the UK through the day on Friday but it's a little uncertain at the

03:00moment in terms of the depth and the track of that low and therefore the

03:03strongest of the winds and so on so certainly something we'll keep an eye on

03:06over the next few days. Another question mark is about how quickly the rain

03:11clears from the south you can see the front there just lingers into the first

03:14part of the weekend whilst another low develops to the west of the country so

03:20low pressure never too far away into the weekend but it could be a wet start in

03:25the south we'll keep an eye on that over the next few days and keep you updated

03:28of course. Now once that rain gets out of the way well back into those blustery

03:34showers but also some sunshine in between along with the keen breeze. In

03:38other words well it stays autumnal into the weekend as well nothing unusual for
