Hello and welcome to the weekend forecast from the Met Office. Following what has been
00:04
a relatively calm week so far across many parts of the country, the weather is now turning
00:09
much more changeable, more buoyant, more unsettled from the north. Having said that, this weekend
00:15
starts off relatively dry in many areas and that continues for most of the day on Saturday
00:21
before an area of wind and rain sweeps across the country later Saturday and into the start
00:26
of Sunday followed by some very lively downpours on Sunday itself along with an increasingly
00:32
strong wind. We've got that sort of thing actually on Friday afternoon into the evening
00:37
in the south east with some lively downpours, strong winds pushing through quite quickly.
00:43
The weather then calms down a little into Friday night, further showers into the north
00:47
and the west of Scotland and Northern Ireland, perhaps some sleet and snow mixed in with
00:51
these showers in the north of Scotland but elsewhere clear spells. Although under those
00:56
clear skies because we've still got a bit of a breeze, we're not going to see temperatures
01:00
fall especially far. We're not going to have a frosty foggy start to Saturday like we have
01:04
seen during many of the mornings during the week so far. We are going to see a largely
01:09
settled start because we've got a brief weather window, a breather in between weather systems
01:15
either side of the UK, this very subtle ridge of high pressure affecting many places. So
01:22
a lot of brightness, north east Scotland a few more wintry showers to come, sleet and
01:26
snow perhaps but otherwise it's sunny spells and in the south and the east it's largely
01:31
bright and dry throughout Saturday. Meanwhile for the higher ground of Wales, Northern England,
01:36
Scotland and Northern Ireland, the cloud thickens, we're going to see some damp weather pushing
01:40
back in and then the rain turns more persistent and heavy later Saturday into the north and
01:45
west of Scotland as well as Northern Ireland because of this weather front. The wind picks
01:49
up here as well so that's not going to make it feel particularly pleasant but technically
01:52
temperatures while they're not going to be on the chilly side, we're looking at double
01:56
figures for most places. You can see this weather system pushing through most places
02:01
during the hours of darkness on Saturday night so a spell of two to three hours of wet and
02:06
windy weather before it is out of the way as most people are up on Sunday. Having said
02:13
that there's further rain on the way in the form of showers for Sunday, mainly as we begin
02:19
the day for northern and western Britain but virtually everyone's seeing a heavy downpour
02:23
or two or several by the end of the afternoon on Sunday. All of that accompanied by an increasingly
02:30
strong wind, gusts of around 50 miles an hour surrounding the showers during the daytime
02:35
on Sunday and you wouldn't rule out hail and thunder combined with the showers as well
02:40
and also some sleet and snow affecting say northern hills. But with all of that going
02:47
on of course it's not going to feel very pleasant whatever the temperatures, 11 or 12 in the
02:51
south, colder further north. And then the winds of particular concern heading into Sunday
02:57
night because you can see this tightening of the ice bars to the west of the UK and
03:03
that tends to spread its way into southwestern parts of the country for Sunday evening and
03:10
later on in the night as well. And that at the moment, we're keeping an eye on it but
03:14
that could bring the potential of more than 60 mile per hour gusts for say parts of Cornwall,
03:20
northern parts of Devon. So we'll keep our eye on that over the next few days, we'll
03:24
keep you updated as well on the forecast heading into the weekend and the best way to follow
03:29
those updates is to follow us on social media. Bye bye.
