Following another wet and windy week for the UK, a big change in fortunes arrives this weekend. Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern has the forecast.

00:00Hello and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the weekend. It's been another week of

00:05wind and rain for most of us and we started the week with Storm Brendan followed by numerous

00:10other lows. You might be thinking, when will this weather ever change? The answer is, this

00:15weekend. Bang on cue, we're going to see sunny days and frosty nights for virtually the whole

00:21country. Great news if that is your sort of thing. Low pressure still with us on Friday,

00:27still bringing a few showers. But look at this, it's subtle at first, it's a ridge of

00:32high pressure, but this ridge is going to transform through the weekend into an enormous

00:36high across the whole of the UK. Under high pressure in the winter, sometimes you get

00:42cold, frosty nights and that's how we'll start off the weekend. Temperatures in towns and

00:47cities at or just below freezing. In the countryside, a few degrees below freezing. So a chill in

00:52the air, a widespread frost and of course where we see any showers continuing through

00:57the night and into Saturday morning across northern parts of Scotland, watch out for

01:01some slippery surfaces because the roads will be below freezing. Seething hail to lower

01:05levels at first, a blustery day to come in the far north of Scotland and some cloud and

01:10a few showers into the far southwest of Cornwall. But these are the exceptions for the vast

01:15majority after that frosty start. It's simply a sunny Saturday, five to nine degrees on

01:20the thermometer. But watch this high on Saturday night, it becomes even higher, isobars appearing

01:25there and centred over the UK. Because of the winds coming around the high like that,

01:31there'll be one or two further showers in the far north of Scotland and perhaps the

01:34odd shower into East Anglia and that means that a frosty start on Sunday could again

01:39bring some slippery surfaces in this part of the world. Once more, a widespread frost.

01:44Temperatures even lower on Sunday morning compared to Saturday morning. We're looking

01:47at minus two to minus four degrees widely, even lower in some sheltered spots. The blue

01:52hues there, not rainfall. They are illustrating the widespread frost there to wake up to

01:57on Sunday. But essentially, it's another sparkling sunny day, a crisp winter day for the vast

02:05majority. The winds easing for the north of Scotland, showers disappearing, further wind

02:09and cloud into the far northwest later in the day. But elsewhere, unbroken blue skies

02:14essentially, five to eight degrees. A cracking weekend to come. There are signs of a bit

02:20more cloud and higher temperatures for next week. But high pressure building through the

02:25weekend will finally bring a return to something more settled and that surely is welcome news
