00:00Hello, another largely dry week with plenty of sunshine, but changes are happening initially slowly,
00:08but quite big changes by the time we get to the weekend, which is of course a bank holiday.
00:13Here's the bigger picture. High pressure has been sitting to the north of us for a very long time.
00:18It's provided very dry and sunny conditions through most of May.
00:21But if we fast forward to Saturday, that high pressure across Iceland has turned into low pressure systems
00:28and these dangling weather fronts will be moving across the UK providing cloud and outbreaks of rain
00:33and the wind as a result switching direction now coming in from the west or the southwest.
00:37So yes, big changes for the weekend.
00:40But before we get there, we've got plenty to get through day by day.
00:44If we come back to the start of the week with the high pressure sitting across Iceland,
00:48the winds are coming down from the north or the northeast providing quite a bit of cloud again overnight.
00:54Not quite as grey as it was on Monday morning for parts of Wales and southwest England.
00:58The cloud won't get as far inland because the winds are lighter and it should retreat again to these coasts.
01:04So yeah, parts of the Norfolk coast may stay a bit grey and we could always see some ha around the northern parts of Scotland.
01:11But for most, it's a sunny Tuesday.
01:14However, the clouds will be bubbling up.
01:16We are going to see a few showers during Tuesday, perhaps across Wales, northwest England, southwest Scotland.
01:21But in this zone, they'll be very well scattered.
01:23Northern Ireland, I think the main focus for showers on Tuesday afternoon, particularly across the south and the west of Northern Ireland,
01:30where heavy, slow-moving thunderstorms are possible.
01:33So that's something we need to watch.
01:35We'll be keeping an eye on the temperatures as well as they tick up.
01:38Probably Tuesday is the warmest day of this week, as has been the case for a while now.
01:42With the winds coming down from the north, that'll keep things a little cooler on the north seacoast.
01:48But as the sun comes out, we should see those temperatures again getting up into the high teens.
01:52And with some sunniest skies further south, a warmer day for the Midlands, South Wales, southwest England,
01:57compared to Monday, up to 23, maybe 24, perhaps even 25 Celsius.
02:02A change, though, for Wednesday.
02:04More cloud for Wales and southwest England.
02:06Increasing chance of some showery rain.
02:08Potential for some of those showers across the southeast.
02:11Maybe even one or two heavy, slow-moving thundery showers possible over the Midlands.
02:16But again, for much of northern England, most of Scotland, looking dry enough.
02:20Certainly a drier day for Northern Ireland on Wednesday with some good spells of sunshine.
02:24Still the breeze coming down from the north.
02:26So still some of those north seacoasts will certainly be cooler and potentially staying cloudy.
02:31And it will be cooler than Tuesday across the southwest with more cloud here.
02:36Temperatures back much closer to average.
02:38Those showers are going to be hit and miss.
02:39Still a bit of a question mark about how much rain we see on Wednesday across the southwest.
02:44By the time we get to Thursday, high pressure still in control to the north.
02:47But we've got another weather front sinking its way southwards.
02:51Now, this is a cold front.
02:52Not much on it in terms of rain.
02:55But it is introducing colder air behind it as it sinks southwards.
03:00And will probably bring quite a lot of cloud on Thursday over northern England, southern Scotland.
03:05And that will sink south over the Midlands, east Anglia and the south.
03:08A little bit of showery rain on it as it drifts southwards.
03:11Generally a brighter, sunnier day for South Wales and southwest England.
03:15And much of northern Britain set fair on Thursday.
03:18But notice that dip in temperatures.
03:20That cold front moving through.
03:22So it is going to be turning quite a bit fresher.
03:24Certainly by night.
03:25These are the overnight temperatures Thursday night into Friday morning.
03:28Yes, towns and cities holding up in the mid-single figures.
03:31But that is quite a bit chillier than it has been.
03:33Cold for the time of year really.
03:35And with these temperatures in towns and cities, rural spots where the winds are light may well dip down to freezing.
03:42So something for gardeners to be aware of.
03:45Something for gardeners to be aware of as well and will be welcome is the sign of a bit of rain.
03:50A few showers.
03:51That's all we'll see on Friday across parts of the east.
03:54Most places having another fine and sunny day.
03:56But behind me there is some rain.
03:58Some useful rain for the gardens.
04:00It doesn't arrive on Friday.
04:02As I said, most places fine and dry.
04:04Feeling pleasant in the sunshine.
04:06But temperatures much closer to average because that colder air is in place.
04:10And again, quite a bit cooler on those North Sea coasts.
04:12But this is those weather fronts that we saw earlier attached to that area of low pressure heading its way across Iceland.
04:19And they will be chugging their way in.
04:21Finally, ousting the area of high pressure and bringing in quite a significant change for the weekend.
04:28The wind switching direction.
04:29These weather fronts will bring thicker cloud.
04:32Some outbreaks of rain at times.
04:33It looks pretty changeable even as we head into the following week, which is half term for many schools.
04:39For the bank holiday weekend, we are expecting rain at times in all areas.
04:44Often quite cloudy and breezy.
04:46But it's not a write-off.
04:49Three-day weekends seldom are.
04:51There will still be fine spells with some dry and sunny weather at times.
04:55Just a question of getting your timings right.
04:58And we'll firm up on the details for this long weekend as we get closer to it.
05:02So the message at the moment, yes, a change is on the way.
05:05But keep up to date with the forecast as we go through the rest of this week.
