The weekend will start cold with a frost for many. As further rain arrives from the west it could turn to snow on some hills, although there’s a fair bit of uncertainty about how much. Alex Deakin has the latest.

Welcome to your weekend weather
00:02
forecast from the Met Office.
00:03
It's going to be cold this weekend.
00:05
And yes, there is more rain to come.
00:08
Cold enough so that that rain actually
00:10
will bring a bit of hill snow in places,
00:12
particularly so on Saturday.
00:14
That's an area we're keeping a close eye on.
00:16
There's quite a bit of uncertainty about that.
00:18
But it does look as if certainly western areas
00:20
should at least be a little bit drier and brighter on Sunday.
00:24
Here's the bigger picture.
00:25
Warm weather system is pulling away.
00:27
A little ridge of high pressure is trying to build in.
00:29
And then there's another weather front out to the west.
00:32
In between those two weather systems,
00:34
colder air will be slipping southwards.
00:36
So Friday night's going to be chilly,
00:38
with a frost in quite a few spots.
00:41
With that cold air in place, as this weather front arrives,
00:43
bringing moisture, bringing rain across Northern Ireland.
00:46
But hitting that colder air could
00:48
start to bring some snow over the hills of Wales,
00:51
especially on Saturday morning.
00:53
And then as that wet weather moves its way further east,
00:56
again, over hills in Northern England,
00:57
possibly even parts of the Midlands,
00:59
over some hills here and southern Scotland,
01:01
we could see a little bit more snow.
01:04
Now, as I said, there's a bit of uncertainty
01:05
about the timing of this band of wet weather moving in.
01:08
And that is crucial as to whether we
01:10
see rain or snow on the hills.
01:13
So, yes, stay tuned for updates about that.
01:15
But certainly many eastern areas should
01:16
have a dry and a bright start to Saturday, but it will be cold.
01:19
Rain, though, does look like edging its way further east.
01:22
Some scattered showers in northeast Scotland,
01:24
but much of Scotland may well be dry and bright
01:27
through the day.
01:27
Northern Ireland staying fairly soggy.
01:29
Showers coming into Wales once that rain band has moved through.
01:32
Southwestern areas may turn a bit brighter with some sunshine,
01:35
but there'll be showers coming in here as well.
01:37
The southwest will likely see the top temperatures 10 or 11
01:40
decrease, but for most we're in single figures.
01:42
And stuck under that rain band, it's
01:44
going to feel cold, five or six Celsius at best.
01:48
That rain band is this weather front,
01:50
which kind of fizzles out a little bit
01:52
as we go through Saturday night and into Sunday.
01:54
But still, it's low pressure dominating into Sunday,
01:57
across the east.
01:58
So there'll still be a lot of cloud here
02:00
with the winds coming in from the North Sea, outbreaks
02:02
of rain across northeast England,
02:03
parts of the Midlands, ebbing away and slipping
02:06
a bit further south.
02:07
Further west, something a bit drier and a bit brighter
02:09
on Sunday.
02:10
We should see some sunshine, but again,
02:12
it is going to feel cold.
02:14
Temperatures struggling in single figures in many areas.
02:17
Notice there's another area of rain
02:18
working into the northwest later on in the day.
02:22
As I said, it is going to feel cold temperatures, many places
02:24
still in single figures.
02:26
And again, we'll see some pockets of frost
02:28
and potentially some pockets of fog in the mornings also.
02:31
So yes, plenty going on.
