The weekend will start cold with a frost for many. As further rain arrives from the west it could turn to snow on some hills, although there’s a fair bit of uncertainty about how much. Alex Deakin has the latest.

00:00Welcome to your weekend weather

00:02forecast from the Met Office.

00:03It's going to be cold this weekend.

00:05And yes, there is more rain to come.

00:08Cold enough so that that rain actually

00:10will bring a bit of hill snow in places,

00:12particularly so on Saturday.

00:14That's an area we're keeping a close eye on.

00:16There's quite a bit of uncertainty about that.

00:18But it does look as if certainly western areas

00:20should at least be a little bit drier and brighter on Sunday.

00:24Here's the bigger picture.

00:25Warm weather system is pulling away.

00:27A little ridge of high pressure is trying to build in.

00:29And then there's another weather front out to the west.

00:32In between those two weather systems,

00:34colder air will be slipping southwards.

00:36So Friday night's going to be chilly,

00:38with a frost in quite a few spots.

00:41With that cold air in place, as this weather front arrives,

00:43bringing moisture, bringing rain across Northern Ireland.

00:46But hitting that colder air could

00:48start to bring some snow over the hills of Wales,

00:51especially on Saturday morning.

00:53And then as that wet weather moves its way further east,

00:56again, over hills in Northern England,

00:57possibly even parts of the Midlands,

00:59over some hills here and southern Scotland,

01:01we could see a little bit more snow.

01:04Now, as I said, there's a bit of uncertainty

01:05about the timing of this band of wet weather moving in.

01:08And that is crucial as to whether we

01:10see rain or snow on the hills.

01:13So, yes, stay tuned for updates about that.

01:15But certainly many eastern areas should

01:16have a dry and a bright start to Saturday, but it will be cold.

01:19Rain, though, does look like edging its way further east.

01:22Some scattered showers in northeast Scotland,

01:24but much of Scotland may well be dry and bright

01:27through the day.

01:27Northern Ireland staying fairly soggy.

01:29Showers coming into Wales once that rain band has moved through.

01:32Southwestern areas may turn a bit brighter with some sunshine,

01:35but there'll be showers coming in here as well.

01:37The southwest will likely see the top temperatures 10 or 11

01:40decrease, but for most we're in single figures.

01:42And stuck under that rain band, it's

01:44going to feel cold, five or six Celsius at best.

01:48That rain band is this weather front,

01:50which kind of fizzles out a little bit

01:52as we go through Saturday night and into Sunday.

01:54But still, it's low pressure dominating into Sunday,

01:57across the east.

01:58So there'll still be a lot of cloud here

02:00with the winds coming in from the North Sea, outbreaks

02:02of rain across northeast England,

02:03parts of the Midlands, ebbing away and slipping

02:06a bit further south.

02:07Further west, something a bit drier and a bit brighter

02:09on Sunday.

02:10We should see some sunshine, but again,

02:12it is going to feel cold.

02:14Temperatures struggling in single figures in many areas.

02:17Notice there's another area of rain

02:18working into the northwest later on in the day.

02:22As I said, it is going to feel cold temperatures, many places

02:24still in single figures.

02:26And again, we'll see some pockets of frost

02:28and potentially some pockets of fog in the mornings also.

02:31So yes, plenty going on.
