Hello.
00:01
Welcome to your weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03
Bit of a roller coaster this week.
00:05
We're going to see big changes.
00:06
We start blustery, a windy start,
00:08
particularly in northern Scotland,
00:10
where there's a warning in force.
00:12
And everywhere will experience a cold wind on Tuesday.
00:15
Then things calm down.
00:17
High pressure moves in.
00:18
The winds turn a lot lighter, which
00:20
means we'll see a return of frost and some fog.
00:23
But then at the end of the week, we
00:25
could see things flipping back and the wind
00:27
starting to pick up, potentially getting
00:29
very windy during the second half of the weekend.
00:32
Let's take a look day by day and take a look
00:34
at the big picture first of all.
00:36
It's this area of high pressure which
00:38
will dominate through the middle of the week.
00:40
But it's not here yet.
00:41
It's this low pressure to the north of Scotland.
00:44
Look at those isobars really nipping together
00:46
across northern Scotland.
00:47
Very strong winds on Monday night.
00:50
There is that warning in force, gusts of 60, 70,
00:53
possibly, around exposed coasts 80 miles an hour.
00:56
That low pressure will also be throwing a lot of showers
00:58
across the country on Tuesday morning.
01:00
Some sleet and snow over the hills in northern Scotland,
01:03
even to lower levels for a time.
01:05
The showers drift southwards.
01:07
And the winds will bring a chilly feel,
01:09
even though we do see things turning drier by the afternoon.
01:13
And we should see some sunny spells.
01:15
Temperature-wise, well, actually,
01:16
the numbers on the thermometer will read a roundabout
01:19
or maybe even a touch above average, 8, 9, 10 Celsius.
01:22
But add on that wind, and particularly
01:25
down the east coast, it is going to feel cold temperatures
01:28
here, feeling more like 2 or 3 Celsius at best.
01:32
So a cold wind blowing on Tuesday,
01:34
but things calming down on Tuesday night.
01:37
As the high pressure moves in, the isobars space out.
01:40
The winds fall light.
01:42
And that will allow things to turn quite cold
01:44
for Wednesday morning.
01:45
A frost is likely in some spots.
01:47
And we could see some fog around as well.
01:50
Overall, though, it's a dry day.
01:52
We'll see some bright or sunny spells coming through.
01:55
If we do get some thick fog, though,
01:57
it could take a while to clear.
01:59
Maybe some drizzly rain at times across the far north
02:01
of Scotland.
02:02
Temperature-wise, well, again, 7, 8, 9 Celsius.
02:04
But the winds won't be as strong.
02:07
However, just bear in mind, if we
02:08
do see some stubborn fog patches,
02:10
temperatures won't be this high.
02:12
They'll struggle to get much above freezing.
02:15
Again, fog likely on Wednesday night,
02:17
as the winds are light across England and Wales.
02:18
Not many isobars here.
02:20
That high is just starting to wobble away.
02:23
A bit more in the way of breeze across northern Scotland
02:25
and Northern Ireland means here it won't be too foggy.
02:28
And again, bar a bit of drizzle across the far northwest,
02:31
it's a largely dry day on Thursday.
02:33
A fair bit of cloud around, but we
02:35
should see some sunny spells coming through
02:36
at times, providing that fog shifts.
02:39
And temperatures, again, single figures for the most part,
02:43
and lower than these numbers if that fog doesn't clear away.
02:47
Could, again, be some fog around on Friday morning
02:49
as the high continues to dominate
02:51
across England and Wales.
02:53
But by this stage, just notice those isobars
02:55
just huddling together a little bit more.
02:57
The breeze started to pick up, and there
02:58
are a couple of weather fronts on the chart.
03:00
One could bring some patchy rain.
03:02
Again, across the western coast, it
03:03
might just be a bit damp and a bit drizzly.
03:05
But for most areas, it's a dry day, predominantly cloudy.
03:09
The winds are coming up from the south,
03:11
which means if we see some breaks in the cloud,
03:13
temperatures could get up to double digits.
03:15
But it's going to be a cold start across the east,
03:17
so temperatures here will struggle a little bit,
03:19
six or seven degrees Celsius.
03:21
I mentioned those weather fronts starting to approach.
03:24
And this one looks like getting on the scene during Friday
03:27
night and into the weekend.
03:29
Still a bit of uncertainty about that, of course.
03:31
But the bigger picture reveals quite a dramatic change
03:34
taking place out in the Atlantic as we go into the weekend.
03:38
Looking high up in the atmosphere,
03:39
this is the jet stream.
03:41
And we could see a really powerful jet stream
03:43
starting to develop at the end of the week
03:45
across the Atlantic.
03:46
And that will then drive areas of low pressure our way.
03:50
Now, this is a few days off, of course.
03:52
So it's difficult to say what exact details of the weather
03:54
into the weekend.
03:55
But it could be quite a big change
03:57
as we see initially some rain arriving in the west
04:00
and then the winds picking up and the possibility
04:02
of some very windy conditions.
04:04
So the message at the moment is stay tuned to the forecast
04:07
day by day variations.
04:09
Best way to stay up to date with those
04:10
is to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
