Met Office

14/10/2024
High pressure means this week will be dry for most of the UK with plenty of sunshine. The mornings will be cool and misty and it may warm up once more at the end of the week. Alex Deakin has the details.

Welcome to your weather for the
00:02
week ahead from the Met Office, a
00:03
week ahead that promises plenty of
00:05
blue sky, lots of September
00:07
sunshine on offer and not
00:09
much rain.
00:10
Most places will be dry through
00:12
much of this week.
00:13
This time of year, though, the
00:14
nights are long enough for things
00:15
to turn a bit misty overnight.
00:17
So maybe a few fog patches here
00:19
and there, especially later on in
00:21
the week. When we're talking dry
00:22
and sunny weather, we're usually
00:24
talking high pressure.
00:25
And that's what we've got this
00:27
week, a big area of high pressure
00:29
ambling in across the country
00:31
and sticking around through
00:32
Wednesday, through Thursday.
00:34
By Friday, it just starts to
00:35
wobble its way a little bit
00:37
further eastwards.
00:38
And that might allow us
00:40
to draw up some warm air from
00:42
the near continent with southerly
00:44
winds pushing in.
00:45
So temperatures could be rising by
00:47
Friday and maybe for the first
00:49
part of the weekend.
00:51
Let's rewind the clock, though,
00:52
and break down the weather
00:54
day by day.
00:55
We're not completely cloud and
00:57
rain free.
00:58
There is this weather front across
00:59
the far south initially on
01:01
Tuesday, bringing maybe some patchy
01:03
rain across Cornwall and the
01:04
Channel Islands.
01:05
But it is shrinking away to
01:06
the south and there will be showers
01:08
at the opposite end of the country
01:09
as well over the Northern Isles,
01:11
possibly Aberdeenshire.
01:12
One or two scattered showers on
01:14
Tuesday.
01:14
But for most, it's dry, it's fine,
01:16
it's sunny. It'll be a chilly start
01:18
on Tuesday.
01:19
By the afternoon in the sunshine,
01:20
temperatures getting into the mid
01:22
to high teens, maybe 20 degrees
01:24
across the south with light winds.
01:25
That should feel fairly pleasant.
01:27
It will cloud over in the far
01:29
northwest.
01:29
Here we have a weather front just
01:32
trying to trickle its way into
01:34
the north of Scotland on Tuesday
01:36
night and into Wednesday.
01:37
A bit of uncertainty about the
01:38
timing of that weather front,
01:40
but it does look like bringing a
01:42
fair bit of clouds and some rain at
01:43
times over the Highlands, the
01:45
Northern and Western Isles during
01:47
Wednesday.
01:47
The central belt southwards, though,
01:49
it is a dry and a fine day.
01:50
Could start a bit misty, maybe the
01:52
old fog patch here and there, but
01:53
it should clear away quite quickly.
01:56
A fair bit of cloud at times across
01:57
northern England, southern Scotland,
01:59
but generally dry and bright.
02:00
And with some sunshine in the south,
02:02
temperatures again getting up to 20
02:03
degrees. Spot the difference on
02:05
Thursday.
02:06
Maybe a bit more mist and fog,
02:07
particularly Northern Ireland, parts
02:08
of northern England, maybe Wales.
02:10
Still some patchy rain in northern
02:12
Scotland, but probably not
02:14
as wet here as it will
02:16
be on Wednesday.
02:17
Just a few showers, really.
02:18
Again, for the majority, it's
02:20
dry, it's bright and temperatures
02:22
just creeping up a little bit by
02:23
Thursday, particularly across the
02:25
south. We could be more
02:27
likely into the low 20s.
02:29
Typically, though, we're into the
02:30
high teens, feeling fairly
02:32
pleasant in that afternoon sunshine
02:34
after a chilly old morning.
02:36
Now it's Thursday and into Friday
02:37
that the high pressure itself just
02:39
starts to push a little bit further
02:41
eastward. Signs of change as
02:43
weather fronts are gathering
02:45
out in the Atlantic.
02:46
But for most places, still
02:48
high pressure in control.
02:49
It could make for a bit more fog
02:52
in the morning on Friday morning.
02:54
Just bear that in mind for Friday
02:55
morning's commute.
02:56
But overall, it's looking dry again
02:58
on Friday and with the wind starting
03:00
to pick up from the south
03:02
across particularly western areas.
03:04
Well, it could feel a bit warmer on
03:05
Friday too.
03:06
Again, there'll be some cloud
03:07
milling around here and there across
03:09
parts of the east, but generally
03:11
expect plenty of sunshine and those
03:12
temperatures responding to a bit
03:14
more sunshine as warmer air starts
03:16
to waft its way further north.
03:18
More likely to see temperatures up
03:19
to 20 degrees more widely,
03:21
perhaps up into the mid 20s in
03:23
one or two spots.
03:24
That sunshine should hang on
03:26
into the first part of the weekend.
03:28
But it has to be said, there's a lot
03:30
of uncertainty about how things
03:32
change through the weekend.
03:33
We are expecting it to turn windier
03:35
and possibly wetter during the
03:37
weekend too.
03:38
That's a long way off and it's
03:40
fairly typical to be a bit
03:42
uncertain about the weekend at this
03:44
stage. So the message is stay tuned
03:46
if you have plans for the weekend,
03:48
but also make the most of the fine
03:49
weather for much of this week.
03:51
All the very latest details will be
03:53
across our channels on social media
03:55
and YouTube.
