Ten Day Trend - Spring sunshine on the way but how warm will it get?
Met Office

14/10/2024
A shift in the jet stream will allow the pressure pattern to change this weekend. High pressure will bring drier and sunnier weather that could last most of next week and it should get a bit warmer, but just how warm? Alex Deakin has the latest.

Hello, welcome to the Met Office
00:01
10-day trend.
00:03
We're going to see some big changes
00:04
with the weather over the next 10
00:06
days.
00:07
Good news if you don't like the
00:08
rain.
00:09
This is a fairly typical scene on
00:11
Wednesday, but the change isn't
00:13
happening immediately.
00:13
So for the next few days, we can
00:15
expect more showers and the
00:17
weather to remain on the cool side.
00:19
But then, especially through
00:21
the weekend, we are expecting
00:22
things to turn a lot drier,
00:24
sunnier, and
00:26
eventually things warming up a
00:28
little bit. We're not promising
00:29
much heat at this stage, just
00:30
temperatures getting back closer
00:32
to or a bit above average
00:34
as we go through next week.
00:35
But it will be significant because
00:36
it has been on the chilly side
00:38
for a while now.
00:40
What's going on?
00:41
Well, simply, we're shifting
00:42
pressure patterns, low pressure
00:43
dominating through Wednesday.
00:45
Fast forward to Monday and
00:47
it's high pressure sitting across
00:49
the UK.
00:50
Show you those again.
00:51
Low pressure on Wednesday.
00:52
Weather front's bringing rain
00:53
isobars close together.
00:55
It's blustery, it's gusty, and
00:57
it's cool by the time we get to
00:58
Monday. High pressure, not as
01:00
many isobars.
01:01
The winds will be lighter, high
01:02
pressure bringing dry weather and
01:04
probably a fair bit of sunshine
01:06
too.
01:07
That's next week.
01:09
Before then, we've still got low
01:10
pressure dominating on Thursday,
01:12
bringing cool and showery
01:13
conditions across the East Coast,
01:15
particularly across Northern
01:16
England early on.
01:17
But it should dry up a little bit
01:19
here. Heavy showers from Northern
01:20
Ireland through Wales, the
01:21
Midlands, across Southern England
01:23
too. Some sunny spells,
01:25
but no great warmth.
01:27
We might get into the teens across
01:29
the South. Temperatures again
01:30
across much of Scotland, despite
01:31
some dry and bright weather, only
01:33
nine or 10 Celsius.
01:34
So it's still on the cool side.
01:37
The low pressure does ebb away
01:38
during Thursday, but it's not
01:40
immediately replaced by that
01:41
high. We've got another low to
01:43
contend with drifting across the
01:44
South during Friday night.
01:46
That could bring some heavy rain.
01:48
Notice it's not a particularly
01:49
intense low.
01:50
There's not a lot of isobars with
01:51
it. And that's because it's not
01:53
really developing much.
01:55
We're not calling it an
01:56
intensifying area of low pressure.
01:58
And the reason for that, well, we
01:59
have to look high up in the
02:00
atmosphere at the jet stream.
02:02
Now, this is the picture for the
02:04
next couple of days.
02:05
We're on the northern side
02:06
of the jet stream, the cooler
02:08
side. Here's that low that's moving
02:10
in for Friday and Saturday.
02:12
And notice the jet's not
02:13
particularly strong.
02:15
The pink colour is the core of the
02:17
jet, not especially
02:19
dominant. So that's why that low
02:20
isn't really intensifying as it
02:22
moves across the UK.
02:23
Where the jet does get really
02:25
lively through the next few days is
02:27
out in the Atlantic.
02:29
And this is kind of triggered by
02:30
the severe storms that's going on
02:32
across the US at the moment.
02:33
But look at the jet stream by
02:34
Saturday. It's really driving south
02:36
and some brighter pinky purpley
02:38
colours there, the core of the jet
02:39
intensifying.
02:41
And what happens is the jet dives
02:42
south and that amplifies,
02:45
as we say, the jet and pushes it
02:46
northwards to the west
02:48
of the UK and eventually then
02:50
arches over the UK.
02:52
And we're in an upper ridge
02:54
where on the warmer side of the jet
02:56
by Sunday and it's in this
02:58
upper ridge area, whereas at the
03:00
surface we're going to see that high
03:01
pressure starting to move
03:03
in. So the high pressure taking
03:05
control through the weekend.
03:07
So we're really expecting this
03:08
changeover during the weekend.
03:09
Saturday, still a fair few showers
03:11
around some sunshine.
03:12
The showers fading through the day
03:14
and generally most places
03:16
set for a fine day on Sunday with
03:18
some sunshine, but it doesn't warm
03:20
up immediately. It takes a while.
03:21
So gardeners, well, still take note.
03:23
Frost's possible, especially so on
03:25
Sunday morning.
03:26
Yes, that warming process is going
03:28
to take a while. The cold air still
03:29
in place during Saturday.
03:31
But let's build the high pressure
03:32
in through Sunday and Monday and
03:34
notice how those blue colours
03:36
disappear.
03:37
But the yellow and orange colours
03:39
don't really swamp the UK.
03:41
Still some tinges of green there by
03:42
Monday. So we're only really at this
03:44
stage looking at temperatures
03:45
getting back closer to
03:47
average, especially so in the
03:49
east.
03:50
Then what happens next week?
03:51
Well, that high pressure should
03:53
stick around.
03:54
It looks like it's going to
03:55
dominate.
03:56
There are weather fronts out in the
03:57
Atlantic and some uncertainty about
03:59
how far they will push in the
04:00
threat of some bringing some rain
04:02
across the northwest.
04:03
But for most places, that high
04:05
pressure promises a lot of dry
04:07
weather next week.
04:08
Many places seeing sunny spells
04:10
by day.
04:11
Big question mark, how much will we
04:13
warm up?
04:14
And for that, well, day by day
04:15
variations on the position
04:17
of the high and the exact
04:20
direction of the wind.
04:21
Well, that will have a big impact
04:23
on what we see temperature wise.
04:25
Will it really warm up that much?
04:26
Well, the continent at this stage
04:28
hasn't warmed up.
04:29
So even if we get the winds from
04:30
the continent, not necessarily
04:32
looking at temperatures rocketing,
04:33
but it should certainly feel quite
04:36
a bit warmer than it has done for
04:37
the past few days.
04:39
And how long will the high pressure
04:40
last? Well, it looks like most of
04:42
next week. This graphic
04:44
telling us that the high pressure
04:45
will dominate for a while.
04:47
Now, don't worry too much about the
04:49
numbers. It's mostly about the
04:50
colours.
04:51
These are the computer runs over
04:53
recent days and these are the
04:54
forecast days going along
04:56
the top. So the weekend is here
04:59
and you can see the blue colours
05:00
dominating for the next two or
05:02
three days. Blue means low
05:04
pressure. And as we've seen, that's
05:05
what we're expecting low to stick
05:07
around. But then the high pressure
05:09
builds in and it probably will
05:10
last. It looks like well into
05:12
next week and
05:14
only some uncertainty as we get
05:15
towards right towards the end of
05:17
next week, as you'd expect.
05:19
That is eight or nine days
05:21
away. So for the majority,
05:23
dry weather will dominate
05:24
throughout next week.
05:25
We should see some sunshine and
05:26
we'll probably see those
05:27
temperatures rising a little bit
05:30
at this stage.
05:31
As always, with the 10 day trend,
05:33
things can vary day on day.
05:35
