Welcome to the 10-day trend that takes us into summer.
00:04
Yes, meteorologically and climatologically,
00:06
summer starts on the 1st of June on Saturday.
00:09
And this year, it could well coincide
00:11
with some summer-like weather.
00:13
We are expecting temperatures to rise.
00:16
And for many of us, we'll see some sunshine on Saturday.
00:19
Now, it is going to be warming up pretty much
00:21
across all parts for the rest of this week.
00:24
It will be turning sunnier for many,
00:26
but not everywhere is going to see blue skies,
00:30
and particularly in parts of the north and the west,
00:32
there will be further outbreaks of rain
00:34
over the next couple of days.
00:35
And then the big question,
00:37
how long is the warmer weather going to last?
00:39
And the short answer is not very,
00:42
because for next week, we're back to low pressure.
00:45
We're back to much cooler conditions,
00:47
and we're back to plenty of showers.
00:49
The really interesting question meteorologically
00:51
is how are we going to change from one to the other?
00:55
And what's the weather going to be like
00:56
as we see that transition during the weekend?
01:00
More on that in a moment.
01:01
Let's get into the detail of how warm
01:03
we're going to see things over the next few days,
01:06
because this is the setup,
01:07
big area of low pressure out in the Atlantic.
01:09
And it's in here where things are warming up.
01:11
This is called a warm sector, quite a broad warm sector.
01:15
And it's in here behind this warm front,
01:17
the warmer air is pushing its way up across the country.
01:21
But notice there are weather fronts just dancing
01:23
and dribbling their way across parts of northern Britain.
01:27
And they will always bring cloud and some outbreaks of rain.
01:29
So as I said at the start,
01:31
it's not turning hot and sunny everywhere.
01:33
On Friday, the warmth really confined
01:35
to central and eastern parts of England.
01:37
And let's run through Thursday and Friday really quickly,
01:40
because this shows you the contrasts,
01:42
bands of cloud and rain coming into Scotland
01:45
and Northern Ireland,
01:46
whereas for much of England and Wales,
01:47
it's dry and a big temperature contrast on Friday.
01:50
If we see some sunshine across the southeast,
01:53
easily into the low 20s,
01:54
whereas it stays cool across the northwest,
01:58
only 12 or 13 here with some outbreaks of rain.
02:01
Now, Saturday is the day where we'll see
02:03
the most widespread heat, if you like.
02:06
But again, it is mostly across England and Wales,
02:09
still across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:11
Temperatures, yes, are rising,
02:13
but nothing spectacular here,
02:15
maybe 18, 19 in the northeast of Scotland.
02:18
But for the bulk of England and Wales,
02:20
Saturday, widespread warmer weather.
02:23
We could get up to 28 or 29 across parts of the southeast.
02:28
The coasts will be cooler
02:29
and the coasts may stay a bit misty and murky.
02:32
But inland, we're looking at 24, 25 degrees Celsius.
02:35
So we're likely to see the warmest day of the year so far,
02:39
probably on Friday and maybe again on Saturday.
02:43
Big question is, as I said,
02:44
how long is that going to last?
02:45
And well, Sunday may well be the day
02:47
when we start to see a change.
02:50
This graphic here shows how widespread
02:52
the warmth is likely to be.
02:54
This is Saturday's chart.
02:55
This isn't the temperatures.
02:56
This is the temperatures compared to average.
02:59
And you can see there, red colours
03:00
for most of England and Wales.
03:02
We are well above average here,
03:04
not so much for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
03:06
Compare that to Friday,
03:08
we're just a few places a little bit above average on Friday.
03:11
That's the day we'll start to see the warmth
03:13
depending on the sunshine.
03:14
Widespread warmth across England and Wales on Saturday.
03:18
How long does it last?
03:19
Well, it looks as if things are turning cooler on Sunday,
03:22
but there's a lot of uncertainty
03:24
about the timing of things turning colder.
03:27
But you can imagine from these graphs,
03:28
actually we've got a cold front swinging across the country
03:31
and that's what we are expecting.
03:33
On Sunday, a cold front swings through
03:35
and introduces cooler air.
03:37
But there is much uncertainty about the position,
03:40
the timing and indeed the intensity of this cold front.
03:44
It could be bringing some thunderstorms
03:47
as it moves across the country.
03:48
So as I said, some uncertainty.
03:50
Let's rewind the clock
03:52
and show you why there's a bit of uncertainty
03:54
and trace this area of low pressure going back in time
03:57
all the way to the eastern seaboard of the United States.
04:02
As I speak, it's forming out across the eastern seaboard
04:05
and there's a lot of activity in the US at the moment.
04:07
Again, another day with severe thunderstorms across the US
04:11
and potential tornadoes breaking out.
04:14
And that kind of severe weather can then impact
04:18
on things high up in the atmosphere.
04:20
This is the jet stream coming out of the United States.
04:24
And as I say, things really could develop
04:26
over the next couple of days
04:27
with that area of low pressure,
04:29
depending on the intensity,
04:30
depending on the number of thunderstorms we see in the US,
04:33
how that then interacts with the jet stream.
04:35
You can almost see the jet almost kind of splitting there
04:38
with two arms to it.
04:39
So it gets very complicated through Thursday
04:42
and then the next few days, the jet tends to drive.
04:45
And it's this little trough
04:47
which then develops the low pressure,
04:48
which becomes the cold front
04:50
that swings across the country on Sunday.
04:52
It's pretty complicated.
04:54
And that's why I'm showing you this
04:56
just to show there's a lot going to happen
04:58
in the next few days, high up in the atmosphere,
05:01
thousands of miles away across the Atlantic
05:03
that will determine the position of this cold front
05:06
on Sunday.
05:08
What does that mean?
05:09
Well, it means that Sunday is the day
05:10
we're likely to see the change.
05:12
We are likely to see some thunderstorms
05:14
triggered by the heat and humidity,
05:16
but there's big question marks
05:18
about exactly where and when.
05:19
So stay tuned for updates
05:21
because Sunday could be a very lively day.
05:23
It may be one more hot day across the East,
05:26
just depends on the timing
05:28
of that cold front swinging through.
05:31
Beyond Sunday, well, actually the weather
05:33
becomes a little bit more straightforward.
05:35
It's one of those slightly counterintuitive scenarios
05:37
where there's a lot of uncertainty about Sunday,
05:40
but beyond Sunday, we're reasonably confident
05:42
in the forecast because the jet stream
05:44
becomes not standard,
05:46
but back to a more typical scenario
05:49
coming out of the Atlantic
05:51
and taking low pressure systems
05:53
just to the north.
05:54
So the most likely scenario
05:55
for the early part of next week
05:56
is that low pressure will dominate
05:58
to the northwest.
05:59
And of course, with the jet slipping back
06:00
further south, we will chiefly be
06:03
on the cold side of the jet.
06:05
So for the first half of next week,
06:07
certainly it looks as if it will be
06:09
on the cool side and we'll see showers
06:11
or longer spells of rain.
06:13
And this graph shows that quite nicely.
06:15
Two graphs here.
06:16
The one on the top is for Reading
06:18
and the one further down
06:20
to the bottom there is Edinburgh.
06:22
Now, I just really want you to focus
06:23
on the red blobs.
06:25
That's the most likely maximum temperatures
06:27
as we go through the next few days
06:29
and into next week.
06:30
The dates there along the bottom,
06:31
this red line is the average temperature
06:34
for the time of year and the red nodules
06:36
suggesting the temperature spread
06:38
for the next few days.
06:40
So we can see here for Reading,
06:41
the temperatures are expected to rise,
06:43
probably peaking on Sunday
06:45
before we see a drop in temperatures.
06:46
And for much of next week,
06:47
temperatures are expected to be below
06:50
or at or below average.
06:51
And the same goes for Edinburgh.
06:53
You can see that trend here,
06:54
the rising and the dropping
06:56
of those temperatures.
06:56
So the scenario is warmer weather,
06:59
yes, for the next few days,
07:00
peaking probably on Saturday
07:03
and then turning cooler
07:04
next week with showers.
07:06
May turn a bit warmer, a bit drier
07:08
towards the back end of next week.
07:10
But I think you'll agree there's plenty
07:12
to get through before we get there.
07:14
The best thing for you to do is to stay
07:16
tuned to the updates

07:20
or follow us on social media
07:21
to see just how hot you could get
07:23
on Saturday and to see if there will
07:25
be some big thunderstorms around
07:28
on Sunday.
07:29
Thanks for watching.
