Welcome to the weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03
Very typical April fair for the next few days.
00:06
Yes, there'll be some warm sunshine in places,
00:09
but there'll also be a fair few showers,
00:11
particularly through Wednesday and Thursday.
00:13
And then, well, things could get quite chilly
00:16
towards the end of the week, turning much colder,
00:18
particularly so at night as we go towards the weekend.
00:21
Bank holiday weekend, of course.
00:23
More on that in just a moment.
00:25
First of all, as I said, let's get through the rest of this week.
00:28
It's looking fairly showery.
00:30
Low pressure is in control, but it's not a deep area of low pressure.
00:34
Wind's generally wafting up from the south.
00:36
So where we see some sunshine through Tuesday,
00:39
particularly across the east, well, temperatures could get up to low 20s,
00:43
perhaps in a few spots.
00:44
It will start quite grey and quite murky,
00:46
a lot of mist and fog around,
00:48
and some of these eastern coasts will stay rather drab.
00:50
And in the west, that weather front will bring cloud and rain at times
00:53
to Northern Ireland, western parts of Scotland,
00:56
and a few showers for Wales and south-west England too.
00:59
With the thicker cloud in the west, temperatures struggling a little bit,
01:03
and with some thicker cloud in the east as well,
01:05
temperatures say in the northern isles where it's misty and murky 9 or 10.
01:09
But elsewhere, a bit of brightness, 19-20 is possible.
01:13
High pressure is shrinking away through Tuesday.
01:15
The low more in control by the time we get to Wednesday.
01:18
But again, looking at the big picture, it's not a vigorous low.
01:21
The ice bar's not particularly close together,
01:24
which means it's not especially windy.
01:26
That means this weather front will be pretty slow-moving
01:29
as it crosses the country during Wednesday,
01:31
probably a dry start in the east,
01:33
but cloud and rain will be working its way westwards,
01:36
the next weather front then bringing more rain to Northern Ireland.
01:39
But actually, in the west, we should see brighter skies for a time
01:42
compared to Tuesday.
01:44
Temperatures, again, low teens generally,
01:48
but feeling a bit chilly if you're stuck under that area of rain
01:51
from that weather front.
01:52
That kind of fizzles out, and it's a bit of a messy picture for Thursday.
01:55
Another little weather feature kind of joins in,
01:58
bringing heavy showers across large parts of the UK during Thursday.
02:03
It could be some intense downpours here and there,
02:06
but it won't rain all day, I wouldn't have thought.
02:08
There'll be some brighter spells in between.
02:11
And then notice the change of wind direction across Scotland,
02:14
coming down from the north, and temperatures here only in single figures.
02:17
That is a sign of things to come.
02:19
Elsewhere, well, a lot of showers around, as I said,
02:22
and temperatures, well, may for a time struggle into the teens,
02:25
but generally, again, feeling a bit colder than that,
02:28
and getting colder, because as that system clears away,
02:31
we then look at the isobars pointing all the way up to the Arctic.
02:35
That is where our air is coming from through Friday
02:38
and as we go towards the weekend.
02:40
So, yes, it is colder air spreading our way.
02:43
Those chilly winds will be pretty noticeable on Friday especially,
02:47
with that colder air flooding its way southwards.
02:50
Now, because the sun's quite strong at this time of year,
02:53
where we see some sunshine by day, temperatures will jump up,
02:56
but this colder air, you'll notice that particularly so at night,
02:59
especially if you're a gardener, if you just put some tender plants out.
03:02
Beware, night-time frosts are likely come the end of the week.
03:06
Here's Friday's chart, though, that northerly wind,
03:09
springing a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of cloud,
03:11
but there will be showers coming in in that northerly.
03:13
Those showers, yes, will have some wintry flavour to them
03:16
across Scotland.
03:17
Some sleet and snow is likely for the south of showers,
03:20
some chiefly of rain,
03:22
but, again, it will be feeling that much colder by Friday
03:25
and staying cold into the first part of the weekend.
03:28
As I said, gardeners take note, night frosts are possible,
03:31
but at the moment, the long weekend looks largely dry
03:35
and there will be sunny spells for many as well.
03:38
No heatwave, but temperatures by day will only be a little bit below average.
03:43
Now, the weekend is a while off, of course,
03:45
so make sure you keep up to date with the latest forecasts.
03:48
You can do that through the Met Office website
03:50
by following us on social media.
