Some sunshine and some April showers for the next few days before it turns colder at the end of the week with frosts possible. At the moment the long weekend, although no heatwave, is expected to be largely dry and bright.

00:00Welcome to the weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.

00:03Very typical April fair for the next few days.

00:06Yes, there'll be some warm sunshine in places,

00:09but there'll also be a fair few showers,

00:11particularly through Wednesday and Thursday.

00:13And then, well, things could get quite chilly

00:16towards the end of the week, turning much colder,

00:18particularly so at night as we go towards the weekend.

00:21Bank holiday weekend, of course.

00:23More on that in just a moment.

00:25First of all, as I said, let's get through the rest of this week.

00:28It's looking fairly showery.

00:30Low pressure is in control, but it's not a deep area of low pressure.

00:34Wind's generally wafting up from the south.

00:36So where we see some sunshine through Tuesday,

00:39particularly across the east, well, temperatures could get up to low 20s,

00:43perhaps in a few spots.

00:44It will start quite grey and quite murky,

00:46a lot of mist and fog around,

00:48and some of these eastern coasts will stay rather drab.

00:50And in the west, that weather front will bring cloud and rain at times

00:53to Northern Ireland, western parts of Scotland,

00:56and a few showers for Wales and south-west England too.

00:59With the thicker cloud in the west, temperatures struggling a little bit,

01:03and with some thicker cloud in the east as well,

01:05temperatures say in the northern isles where it's misty and murky 9 or 10.

01:09But elsewhere, a bit of brightness, 19-20 is possible.

01:13High pressure is shrinking away through Tuesday.

01:15The low more in control by the time we get to Wednesday.

01:18But again, looking at the big picture, it's not a vigorous low.

01:21The ice bar's not particularly close together,

01:24which means it's not especially windy.

01:26That means this weather front will be pretty slow-moving

01:29as it crosses the country during Wednesday,

01:31probably a dry start in the east,

01:33but cloud and rain will be working its way westwards,

01:36the next weather front then bringing more rain to Northern Ireland.

01:39But actually, in the west, we should see brighter skies for a time

01:42compared to Tuesday.

01:44Temperatures, again, low teens generally,

01:48but feeling a bit chilly if you're stuck under that area of rain

01:51from that weather front.

01:52That kind of fizzles out, and it's a bit of a messy picture for Thursday.

01:55Another little weather feature kind of joins in,

01:58bringing heavy showers across large parts of the UK during Thursday.

02:03It could be some intense downpours here and there,

02:06but it won't rain all day, I wouldn't have thought.

02:08There'll be some brighter spells in between.

02:11And then notice the change of wind direction across Scotland,

02:14coming down from the north, and temperatures here only in single figures.

02:17That is a sign of things to come.

02:19Elsewhere, well, a lot of showers around, as I said,

02:22and temperatures, well, may for a time struggle into the teens,

02:25but generally, again, feeling a bit colder than that,

02:28and getting colder, because as that system clears away,

02:31we then look at the isobars pointing all the way up to the Arctic.

02:35That is where our air is coming from through Friday

02:38and as we go towards the weekend.

02:40So, yes, it is colder air spreading our way.

02:43Those chilly winds will be pretty noticeable on Friday especially,

02:47with that colder air flooding its way southwards.

02:50Now, because the sun's quite strong at this time of year,

02:53where we see some sunshine by day, temperatures will jump up,

02:56but this colder air, you'll notice that particularly so at night,

02:59especially if you're a gardener, if you just put some tender plants out.

03:02Beware, night-time frosts are likely come the end of the week.

03:06Here's Friday's chart, though, that northerly wind,

03:09springing a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of cloud,

03:11but there will be showers coming in in that northerly.

03:13Those showers, yes, will have some wintry flavour to them

03:16across Scotland.

03:17Some sleet and snow is likely for the south of showers,

03:20some chiefly of rain,

03:22but, again, it will be feeling that much colder by Friday

03:25and staying cold into the first part of the weekend.

03:28As I said, gardeners take note, night frosts are possible,

03:31but at the moment, the long weekend looks largely dry

03:35and there will be sunny spells for many as well.

03:38No heatwave, but temperatures by day will only be a little bit below average.

03:43Now, the weekend is a while off, of course,
