02:22International Concepts is this huge brand that is sold all over the United States.
02:27So this is such an important challenge.
02:30I was immediately thinking about some ready-to-wear,
02:33you know, like jackets, pants, dresses.
02:35Tim will fill you in on all the details in the workroom.
02:40You've seen your models walk in three challenges.
02:43So we're going to mix it up a little bit and let you pick again.

02:54Models, this is a competition for you as well.
02:57The model paired with a winning designer will get a fashion spread in Elle Magazine.

05:02As Heidi said, you will be designing an outfit for ink.
05:05I am delighted to introduce Mehmet Tangoran, Vice President of Contemporary Sportswear for Macy's, who will tell you about your next challenge.
05:13Your next challenge will be to design a three-piece look for our ink brand at Macy's.
05:20Let me give you a little background about the ink customer.
05:23She's really ageless.
05:25She's fashion-forward.
05:26She reads all the magazines and wants the hot new looks.
05:31Now, just bear in mind, ink is our new largest brand nationally.
05:35It is the biggest business for us in ready-to-wear.
05:38There's more.
05:40For this challenge, you will be working in teams of three.
05:43When I found out it was going to be another team challenge, I was like, you know what?
05:49I get a chance to redeem myself.
05:52We want to put you inside a real-world industry experience, so each of you will be pitching your ideas to Mehmet.
05:59Mehmet, in turn, will be choosing four team leaders who will move forward with their designs.
06:04My experience with Barbie is really good preparation for things like this because you have to be able to come up with some pretty strong ideas to go into a presentation with a big customer.
06:15You will have 30 minutes to sketch, and we have a dossier on ink for each of you.

06:28I've worked in the industry briefly doing menswear because I think I understand what needs to be done to win.
06:41I definitely feel like because I worked at Nike that I had an edge above some of the other designers who only have worked for themselves.
06:48I'm used to designing for, like, the masses and millions of people.
06:51I don't really sketch as part of my process, so it's hard for me to do this particular challenge.

07:05We're going off to Macy's.
07:08What I have for you is sort of a deep V, side-length knit dress.
07:14I based my design on what I think is the holy grail.

07:20I love the idea of skinny jeans.
07:23The main piece is going to be a coat.
07:25I have a convertible paint top, which you can pull down and use as a dress.
07:31My three pieces would be a lightweight tunic, the man-cut trouser, with a jacket.
07:37Okay, terrific.
07:39My idea was to use the cardigan and kind of just modify it.
07:44A great piece to start with would be like a trench coat.
07:46Colors, I was looking at the nut, I thought was really nice.
07:50I love color.
07:51I'm from the South.
07:52I like the idea of doing some fun color combinations.
07:55Now, the little cardigan, I was thinking of gray.
07:57Gray, I feel, is very important right here.
07:59It's going to take the place of brown.
08:00I was inspired by the Empire State Building.
08:03It was gray and black and it was magnificent and so I would like to translate it into this outfit.
08:12Designers, Mehmet has chosen the four team leaders.

08:17The first team leader is Robert.
08:21Robert, I chose you because I thought your sketches were outstanding.
08:26The second team leader is Bonnie.
08:28Bonnie, I thought you really understood the customer who's shopping in our ink department.

08:38I liked your colors.
08:39The whole presentation was very well done.

08:43And the final team leader is Angela.
08:50I was so thrilled.
08:52It meant the world to me to be chosen as the team leader.
08:56Angela, I loved your inspiration in terms of the Empire State Building, in terms of your color.

11:12And accordingly, the design of the winning team will be put into production and sold at Macy's largest stores nationwide.
11:20That's a big deal.
11:23And very, very thrilling.
11:24I think that the idea of having my clothes in a Macy's is kind of great because it reaches such a wide audience.
11:31You have two days for this challenge.
11:33Each team has a budget of $100.
11:36Ooh.
11:37You will have 15 minutes to caucus as a team.
11:40And then we're going shopping.

12:05My inspiration was the sunrise over the Empire State Building.
12:08You need to bring your color palette into this jacket somehow and you need to do it really fast.
12:13I know that most of the designers in that room think I'm coming from way out of left field.
12:17I just really just want to get past it with everybody and move on.
12:21I think I want to give everybody like what they're best at.

12:27Keith is a menswear designer but he designated pants to Jeffrey.
12:31I want you to bring your expertise into this.
12:33Keith gave me the pants and he wanted them super fitted which is like really hard to do.
12:39And then he gave like a double layered turtleneck thing to Allison.
12:44My expertise is not in Jersey so, and you know what you're doing with Jersey, right?
12:48Yeah.
12:49Keith gave us the most ambitious parts of the outfit.
12:54Designers, we're going shopping, okay?
12:57We need this kind of color.
12:58We couldn't find the material that we wanted or the one we wanted was like a gazillion dollars a yard.
13:08I think that I like that one the best.

16:21Having a pattern making book gives you an advantage because if I had to completely do a two piece notch color perfectly right now, it would take me longer than if I just read up on that chapter real quick.
16:32Keith has kind of gotten special recognition for his work.
16:35And if he's using pattern making books and how to books, then I want to be able to use those things.
16:40He said he was ruthless from the beginning.

30:11Laura, Michael, and I worked really, really well together.
30:25It was a complete dream.
30:28Both of their sewing skills are excellent, and their taste is excellent.
30:31It all just came together really, really well.
30:34I felt great about my design.
30:48I thought it really looked chic and put together.
30:50I felt really confident.
30:51And she took off the coat.
30:54I thought the outfit underneath looked stellar.
30:59The skirt was crazy on her.

31:02I just wanted it to look sexy and sort of a little flash of leg.
31:06When the garment was coming down the runway, you know, I felt pretty good.
31:22I thought it looked like a great outfit for that woman who wants something that's a little
31:25bit fashionable but a little bit safe at the same time.

31:30We're really proud that we were able to get everything done, that it fits so nicely.

33:14Oh, this is my signature rosettes, which I'm obsessed with right now.

33:19I like the matte and shine of the fabric and the mixing.
33:24It looks cool.
33:25I love the pink with the masculine gray suiting.
33:29The color palette was actually inspired by Sunrise over the Empire State Building my second morning here.
33:34We also even thought to align the jacket, too.
33:38The Empire State Building is so great to see.
33:40You can show us the secret surprise.
33:41You know, for $100, this looks very expensive to me.
33:48Allison and Jeffrey, now you lost your leader.
33:52And how did that go, to work without a leader?
33:55Allison and I worked together, I thought, under the circumstances and the pressure, really well.
33:59Mehmet, how do you like this look?
34:01I really love the pant.
34:03I think the pant is dead on.
34:04It's got the groovy factor, which I like.
34:07I think the pants are very sexy.
34:09And the detail down at the bottom, the cut of the vent.
34:12And there's some stretch in them.
34:13When you want a pant that's tight, you can move in.
34:15This look is very, very hip, youthful, and active.

35:17I hate the fabric of the pants.

35:44How did you feel about this outfit?
35:49I think that what we made is very close to the sketch.
35:55I guess maybe it doesn't feel as fun as I might have expected of the three of you.
36:01Robert, did you guys have the same idea that it was going to be for an older customer?
36:06I think I was thinking of a little bit more sophisticated classic customer.
36:10To me, I don't understand how this fits together.
36:12You know, it's sort of like a sportier jacket, and then I see, I don't know what, underneath.
36:18I don't see those two pieces together at all.
36:21Can we take the jacket off?
36:23Can you just turn around for one second?
36:25It's always very tricky with narrow skirts to have back slits.

37:30They had a nice synergy, the two of them together.
37:33The pant was amazing, and it fit well.
