00:00You
00:20Looks like they're nowhere near us
00:24This is probably too optimistic, but maybe that weather was too much for the seventh
00:28I can't see them giving up and going home though. Can you?
00:32No, they're expecting us. They think we'll head down the mountains towards Abashiri
00:37So we'll do the unexpected and head towards Tokuchi to shake them off. Let's go
00:42The others know what to do if separated we meet up in Abashiri I
00:51Sent Huchi a telegram. I wanted to check in with her and make sure everything there was all right
00:56There should be an answer waiting for us at this post office
01:00Who from?
01:02From a Sherpa's uncle. He used to work with the Japanese for a time, so he knows how to read and write a little
01:11What does it say
01:13Huchi making Raikuru Shiyuku?
01:16What's Raikuru Shiyuku?
01:20Raikuru Shiyuk. It's a burial shroud
01:25When an elderly Ainu knows that death is drawing near they prepare their own burial shroud in secret
01:34Why did you have to say what you did?
01:36I had no choice, but to tell her what the spirits told me there is a traitor close to a shirpa
01:47I don't want Huchi to die
01:49She took me in and fed me when I needed it
01:52She said the Ainu always care for children
01:55She says that without them you can't move on to the next world
01:59Because when an Ainu dies those left behind perform a ritual for their souls
02:04Otherwise, they can't enter the afterlife
02:09So they'll take in and raise any child even if they aren't their own
02:17Chikapashi don't worry
02:20I'm gonna bring a shirpa back safe and sound that'll raise Huchi spirits, so I won't rest until it's done
02:27She took me in same as you
02:31So I'm one of her kids too. No way. You're her gigolo Tanagaki Nishpa
02:37He sure is
02:50Maybe this is what I've been looking for
02:57I'm one of her kids too. No way. You're so happy.
02:59Maybe this is how I get ready. You're so happy.
03:01Why would you always be thinking?
03:06Why would you do this?
03:11I'd be here for you and have a while and have a little spot
03:14Go ahead.
03:15I'm going to watch a dream
03:18If anything else is going to be
03:20I'm going to be
03:23See you next time.
03:53See you next time.
04:23See you next time.
04:53No, I can't say I've heard of it.
04:55How's it taste like any other mochi?
04:58We add water to rice powder, then mix in miso or salt.
05:03Knead thoroughly, wrap it up in a leaf, then bake it in a covered pan.
05:08Tozawa matsugi, however, are forbidden from adding miso to their kanemochi.
05:12So, each village has its own particular rules, then?
05:17My father was incredibly stern, so I never told anybody about this.
05:22But I didn't actually follow the rules.
05:26I did something special to my kanemochi.
05:29Then one day, another matsugi discovered my secret.
05:32How'd he do that?
05:35That's kind of a story.
05:37We were hunting a wild goat that we call an Aoshish.
05:42Mataki travel in small groups, and each member has a specific role to play in the hunt.
05:46There's a scout, a mukai-mate, who gives orders to the group.
05:53Then two riflemen called Matsumai, and two Sekko who aren't allowed to use guns.
06:00The Sekko's main job is to be loud and drive the prey into the riflemen's sights.
06:03The bears the Mataki call Itazu have a tendency to run uphill into the mountains.
06:13So the Sekko drive them toward the peak.
06:16The Aoshish are the opposite, so we drive them away from the peaks.
06:19I was a Sekko, out with a boy a year older than me named Kenkichi Aoyama.
06:25When we got up to the peak, the weather suddenly changed.
06:28We sought refuge in a cave, but the blizzard kept raging.
06:35We were trapped there for days.
06:37The beans and rice we'd brought weren't enough.
06:39They ran out fast.
06:43Kenemochi was created to keep you alive in situations like that.
06:47No matter how cold it gets, it doesn't freeze, and it never spoils.
06:51And nibbling on just a little of it is enough to fill you up.
06:58Here.
07:02What's wrong?
07:04I was just thinking that if this blizzard doesn't stop, this could be our last meal.
07:08Huh.
07:09Speak for yourself.
07:10I'm surviving this even if it means I have to eat you.
07:18Hey.
07:19What's that taste?
07:20Did you mix something in?
07:21The flavor's familiar.
07:25Wait.
07:26Don't tell me.
07:27I'll guess it.
07:29Let's see.
07:33I know.
07:34It's walnuts.
07:35You put walnuts in, didn't you?
07:38Yeah.
07:39But do me a favor.
07:40Don't tell my father, okay?
07:42Okay.
07:46Hey.
07:47Genjiro?
07:48Huh?
07:48We're going to get out of this alive.
08:09Not too long after that, Ken Kichi married my younger sister Fumi, so then we were like real brothers.
08:16Mm-hmm.
08:19Fumi and Ken Kichi lived quietly and happily just a little ways up the mountain on their own, away from the village.
08:30On that day, I'd been making Kanemochi at home as usual.
08:35My brother came in from outside with a look on his face I'd never seen before.
08:40It's Fumi!
08:43When I saw the sheer panic in his eyes, it felt like I'd been stabbed through the chest.
08:51By the time I arrived, the little hut where the two of them lived was already.
08:56I found her body inside.
09:11It was burnt to a crisp.
09:13But why?
09:16What happened here?
09:18What the hell happened here?
09:20Fumi!
09:21That's when I saw the stab wound in her heart.
09:32And next to her, Ken Kichi's maske.
09:37The short blade we call a maske is the soul of a matagi.
09:40But Ken Kichi wasn't there.
09:44He was nowhere to be found.
09:48Where the hell is he?
09:50I swear, our son hasn't been here.
09:52Please don't hurt us.
09:54You're not hiding him, are you?
09:55I searched for him everywhere.
10:02But I never found him.
10:05And then one day, I finally heard a rumor that he'd joined the seventh in Hokkaido.
10:10And I was ready.
10:14Give it up, Genjiro.
10:16Don't abandon Ani simply for revenge.
10:19Do you really want to waste your life like that?
10:21I refuse to let my sister's murderer live!
10:30Forget being a maske then.
10:32I won't be back.
10:36There were a total of 37 Tondene villages in Hokkaido at that point.
10:40Between my training and farm work, it was easy to move around and search for Ken Kichi.
10:46But I had no luck.
10:47Then, just before we left for war, my brother sent me a message saying my mother was dead.
10:57Fumi's brutal death.
10:59Me abandoning my home to go to war.
11:02These things were too much for her frail heart.
11:05She became sick and died.
11:07My hatred grew as I told myself Ken Kichi was responsible for everything.
11:16If I went to Port Arthur, where the Hokkaido soldiers were gathered, I could find him.
11:21Once I had, I'd wait for my chance in battle.
11:24And shoot him from behind.
11:26I saw a haggard-looking man sitting in the corner of one of the trenches.
11:51His face was so covered in blood.
11:56Whether it was his or an enemy's was hard to tell.
11:59A white sash.
12:02This man must be a survivor of last night's suicide charge.
12:07That's impressive.
12:10Hey, man. Any chance you got food?
12:14Um, yeah.
12:16Eat.
12:17I appreciate it.
12:21Thanks a lot.
12:26This firm texture.
12:28Could it be mochi?
12:29Then I taste miso.
12:31So what is this? Some kind of Akita dish?
12:35How did you know that?
12:37Not hard to deduce.
12:38Dead giveaway?
12:40The use of these spices.
12:41It's definitely an Akita thing.
12:43There was a private in the First Division where I'm from who came from a place called Ani in Akita.
12:50He talked about it all the time.
12:52He told me that he had been a hunter back home before he came to Tokyo.
12:57It was Kenkichi.
13:00I'd finally found my sister's killer.
13:05That's what had happened.
13:06He'd gone to Tokyo rather than Hokkaido.
13:09The soldiers at 203 Hill were from everywhere.
13:13Many hailed from the Hokkaido 7th, as well as the Shikoku 11th.
13:18Also the Kanazawa 9th.
13:20And yes, there were many from the Tokyo 1st.
13:23Yes.
13:25And the way I saw it, the gods had finally helped me discover my little sister's killer.
13:30That's how it felt.
13:31I wanted to go and find him immediately.
13:35But I knew that if I saw him, I'd most likely lose control.
13:40I had a good plan.
13:42I knew I could satisfy my need for revenge in the heat of a battle where I wouldn't be caught.
13:47But you were there.
13:49That hill was a nightmare.
13:52No time to look for anybody when it's all you can do just to survive.
13:56The Russians threw grenades at us.
14:08And we threw them right back.
14:13As we began to push them back further and further,
14:16they got desperate and changed tactics.
14:19Strapped grenades to their bodies and jumped in our trenches.
14:21It was hell, I remember.
14:25Blood and body parts everywhere.
14:27Just one of them could take out ten of us.
14:29And then another came.
14:32Bring that man down!
14:34Two hits from a Type 30 right to the chest.
14:37Didn't even slow him down.
14:41Suddenly, a lone man emerged.
14:44Running out of one of the trenches.
14:46It was bad.
15:05Ken Kichi just barely survived.
15:07At last, the moment I'd been waiting for had arrived.
15:15Or so I thought.
15:17Ken Kichi!
15:19I finally found you!
15:21I'm gonna stab you straight through your heart!
15:24Just like you did to Fumi!
15:28Tanagaki!
15:29Come on, he's done for!
15:30He can't even hear you!
15:32His eardrums are probably destroyed!
15:33The battle seemed to reach some kind of stalemate.
16:00And the whole place became strangely quiet.
16:03Why?
16:07Tell me!
16:09Why did you kill Fumi?
16:11Who are you?
16:14What's that voice?
16:18I don't know who you are.
16:21But can you take a message?
16:23Can you do that for me?
16:25A man named Tanagaki and Ani?
16:31My brother, I buried the Tanagaki family's daughter Fumi.
16:35She was so beautiful.
16:36She was so beautiful.
16:38She was so beautiful.
16:39Such a warm ward.
16:41Far too good for me.
16:43The two of us lived quietly together in the mountains.
16:47Then one day, she became sick with Apox.
16:55My parents, don't tell them.
16:58I'm begging you.
17:00Fool me.
17:01If you do, they'll just worry.
17:04And then they'll try to come here.
17:06If it spreads to them.
17:09I know.
17:10And you, you can't stay here either.
17:15What?
17:15What are you trying to say?
17:17We'll tie together, I swear.
17:19When a member of a mountain family catches smallpox, we abandon that loved one so it won't spread.
17:29But I couldn't, I couldn't do it.
17:32I heard an awful story about animals finding their way into an abandoned home and killing the sick who were left inside.
17:41I knew there was no way I'd let her die alone in that house, but she refused to let me stay with her.
17:51If it was known that Tanagaki had gotten smallpox, the rest of the village would shun them.
18:00The other Matagi would refuse to hunt with the rest of her family.
18:04She wanted me to kill her, then leave without telling anyone in the village.
18:12So, she covered her beautiful face with a cloth.
18:19And then she said, if it doesn't spread to you, then you must decide how to spend the rest of your life.
18:32Find your role.
18:34Love.
18:36I'll try.
18:40At last, I finally did it.
18:46We decided on a way for her to suffer as little as possible.
18:52I am a hunter, so I used the method I knew best.
18:57I did what she said, burnt down our home, and left the village without telling her family about her death.
19:13My actions have caused great pain to her family and to the village.
19:27If I can heal those wounds in any way, please, sir, please, tell this story to Tanagaki and Ani.
19:40Please.
19:41Please.
19:41Please.
19:43Kanemoji with walnuts.
19:57Kenjiro
20:01And then
20:07He passed from this life before my eyes
20:10He had found his role in life
20:15And spent the rest of his days carrying it out
20:19Every day since I ask myself the same question
20:23What is my role in life?
20:25I can't go back to Ani now
20:28I couldn't bear to face my father or brother
20:31Tanigaki
20:34Perhaps I can help you answer your question
20:38Hey, I know what you can do for a start
20:44How about some of those kanamochi with walnuts?
20:53At your service, sir
20:55Hey, look at that
21:11Somebody's dancing all the way out there
21:14Doesn't it look like a sherpa?
21:16Hey
21:17Nice
21:26This is a dance from kushiro, right?
21:29The sarorum rimse, the crane dance
21:32Look, someone's coming
21:42You see, I knew it, it's a sherpa
21:52Chikapashi, and chirona, and tanigaki
21:57How in the world?
22:12Take care
22:13This is a dance from kushiro, right?
22:14I cannot wait
22:15You see, I know what I'm talking about
22:16I know you can do it
22:17We are talking about
22:18I know you can do it
22:19I know you can do it
22:20You can do it
22:21You can do it
22:22You can do it
22:23You can do it
22:24You can do it
22:25You can do it
22:26You can do it
