02:09So head up to the workroom and Tim will explain the rest.
02:12good luck and I see you back here on the runway good morning designers well I'm
02:23certain that you recognize Mondo Guerra finalist in season 8 and the winner of
02:27last year's project runway all-stars and congratulations again and welcome thank
02:32you I'm excited to be here it's great to have you now you may have deduced by
02:36virtue of the fact that there are HP touch smart desktops around the room
02:39that this is the HP and Intel challenge we're very excited about it you will be
02:45creating a textile design and a modern runway look inspired by your cultural
02:51heritage sounds good and Mondo won this challenge in season 8 and I wanted you
02:57to share with the designers what your experience was like this particular
03:01challenge changed my lifetime yes that day was magical for me these pluses are
03:09positive signs and I've been HIV positive for ten years and so I wanted to pull
03:18from the past but I also wanted to give something back of who I am now thank you
03:27for sharing that with us wonder you know I feel a lot better I feel free I think we do best work as
03:39designers when we show truth I think it's really important to dig deep and really make it matter
03:46this is the time to do it you're going to have an hour to create your textile designs on the HP touch
03:51smart desktop and your designs that you create today will be sent to dynamics to manufacture your fabrics
03:58and you're going to receive an HP ultra book inspired by Intel and on that ultra book will be a cultural
04:06heritage dossier for each of you and it's going to arrive via special delivery also you designed an
04:12accessory for the HP I have it's a bag for the HP ultra book they asked me to design a new pattern so
04:18it's kind of about breaking away it's available on hp.com oh that's wonderful your hour designing on the
04:26HP touch smart desktop begins right now look guys the door opens and women start coming in
04:47I think my boyfriend here it was like a volcano just erupt inside of my chest
05:15oh my god I'm so happy my mom is here I needed this more than anything
05:22I start crying I mean happy tears I'm so happy to see my sister who I missed and haven't seen in a long
05:30time oh my god you look so good you put a dress on for today my mom just moved to Florida and I had
05:38kind of come to terms with the fact that I wouldn't get to see her for a little while and here she walks in
05:43all tan and smiles and is beautiful beautiful my mom brings a slideshow of photographs from my
05:52childhood until today and it is really inspiring and it was supposed to inspire me and also you know
05:58make me think about who I am and where I came from oh oh my oldest and dearest friend Irene we've been
06:08best friends for over 15 years she comes with a surprise video from my dad it makes me even more
06:23emotional my dad is an artist and my grandfather was a big artist and he would teach me things talk to me
06:30about art shapes and forms and I still have his hand in everything what I do wow he was so good oh my god oh
06:44oh my god oh oh I know do you remember doing that with Kinley teaching her to sell yes and one of my favorites of you
07:03I was really happy when I was younger when I was with my family my family quickly became my everything
07:10because they were the few people I knew that wouldn't judge me
07:13growing up I had troubles with like bullying I remember days just going home and just like cry
07:28to my mom completely torn up about why I was being bullied so bad I didn't mean to make you cry
07:35that's okay that's okay I'm just really happy it's really emotional for me because all the times
07:45in my childhood in Ukraine were the happiest times of my life they gave me a lot of flashbacks to
07:52those happy and joyful times and how much I appreciated them and even though crying right now it's it's a
08:01really happy moment for me you can do it you can do it oh my sisters seeing my mom is great but it kind of
08:17slightly puts me off my game because I don't want to be thinking about my mom when I'm sewing I'm just
08:23trying to like keep my eye on the prize it's so hard coming up on project runway help me help me
08:30maybe this one's too heavy too shiny I don't even know what I'm doing right now I hate prints
08:34you have to make this work Christopher's a hot mess
08:36we have to make our own textiles this is the HP textile oh god I love that one
08:47no but like you know you whatever and then generate it to the fabric this is amazing I mean if you think
08:56of the colors that just like of Belarus in general for this challenge we have to use HP technology to
09:03create our own print based on our heritage and background I'm thinking about my grandfather's
09:10aesthetics my father's aesthetic my textile is inspired by traditional ornament used in
09:17traditional costumes and I'm taking it to the next level it's simple but it's intricate
09:23it's beautiful help me help okay let me help you I was gonna do churches I definitely want something
09:30that's bold this is definitely used in religious functions a lot this whole thing also relates to
09:36my aesthetic I love your story in our religion one thing that's used are flowers specifically hibiscus
09:42flowers and if you look at a lot of the the Indian gods you'll see that they're actually holding one
09:48in their hand I want rhythm I want movement and I want a little bit of conflict too can you hold your
09:53hands so I can see that yeah we decide to go with my growing up the troubles with like bullying in
10:03school that was my heritage because that's what's made me who I am today I'm starting out my sketch
10:10today with these abstract skeleton hands coming in and it's just the bird breaking free of them love
10:16that I love it that's perfect that is perfect all right designers this is for notions and supplemental
10:26textiles to what will be the star of your look your printed textile design which is very exciting and
10:31your time starts right now let's head back to Parsons okay
10:52look ladybugs and then I feel like hearts ladybugs it's crazy so weird when my grandma passed away there
11:01were ladybugs everywhere every family has you know that little thing that clicks them all together my
11:08family it's ladybugs but I don't want it to be like oh nice ladybug costume it's very abstract ladybug
11:15you're making a dress or separates all separates I can't do any another dress I've done plenty of
11:25dresses but I have to move on because otherwise I'll be in trouble I need that fabric immediately I can't
11:31just do this I don't have everyone's doing this right now all right your loved ones are back at the
11:43atlas apartments making dinner for you so you're gonna have a nice fun evening
11:49what are you gonna do with the jacket again like the tuxedo be a challenge after challenge you kind
12:13to lose your creativity a little bit because you're getting tired I'm definitely like trying to soak this
12:17up because I know that it's not much time left do you find it hard choosing the fabric oh my god
12:23oh my god feels weird we definitely needed this today so yeah pleasure now parties over tomorrow
12:37tomorrow back to work back to work back to hard work I love you this strong here is thrown ukrainian woman
12:47okay oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god I feel like it's like a gift it's like wrapped up
13:15wow it is like Christmas it's exactly what I wanted it to be are you so excited I'm really I really
13:23am it's a nice car yeah it's traditional oh it does look good okay Fabio can I see it now
13:33I'm feeling confident this is the right challenge I don't want to just make something that's cut and
13:46sew and it's a beautiful print it's very subtle yeah I like it I'm getting dizzy wow this is a lot of luck
13:57right now
14:03my pattern is so hard to match up because there's so many birds let's make this as hard to match up
14:13as we can I have never had this much trouble designing something before I don't know which direction
14:20it needs to go in I've been having separation anxiety myself but I'm here now and I'm gonna
14:30check in with each of you okay okay two looks yeah cuz I can't decide what does your heart tell you I do
14:37love this I love this all right my models love is a good gorgeous in this but there's something here
14:43that I love my feeling about this I'll be blunt is that it's more expected okay that's perfect you're
14:49feeling better yes I'm feeling so much better good I decided to use the print on the pant the challenge
14:55for you is going to be the fit of this pan yeah because if this isn't great it's gonna be it's gonna
15:01show yeah well you've been ambitious I decided to make my own kind of textile but the illusion so
15:08you're extracting these shapes yeah I think it's looking very prim I would use the top to sex it up
15:17I totally agree with you thanks Dimitri thank you thank you how's Van hey Tim so talk to me about your
15:23inspiration as you know in our culture the clothes are extremely colorful and vibrant and a lot of draping
15:29fleeting and the whole feeling of it is very organic I don't know what I'm seeing that you're not
15:38seeing but I look at this and I'll be blunt I see an homage to a menstrual cycle I am absolute I don't
15:47understand I mean it looks like cloths that have soaked up blood do you see it not really designers am I
15:59crazy does anyone else see it as you mentioned it yes I just hope no one's offended by it as they look
16:07like maxi pads all right fun all right thank you I did not expect him to say what he did and to
16:16really think so negatively of it this challenge that flower of you know it just means a lot coming up on
16:24project runway I just don't think this is enough I know I'm gonna be fed to the wolves now I have to
16:30redo this entire jacket I just am freaking out I'm eager to hear all about what you're creating so this
16:45is the actual fabric it has a bit of a red so what I did I put it organs over it just like tone it down
16:50because it really has to go with the block of the yeah of the bottom I would never have known that
16:56that's what you did yeah talk to me about your print it represents our bloodlines flowing together
17:02oh veins and arteries in the manner of speaking I have to tell you I think it's beautiful I just
17:06found it really outside my box to work in these colors well it's true for most of you I feel that
17:11you need to be more ambitious with this to really wow the judges I know it kind of looks like a scrub
17:16right now the nurse I'm so happy you said that I know that's what everyone's thinking no it's not
17:22you okay but I feel like if I add I like the high collar because you are working kind of a Marlo Thomas
17:28that girl thing so what's going on with this jacket gunner um it's kind of my take on a riding jacket to
17:42me this looks very don't believe me suit of armor the black yoke is just so heavy looking okay and
17:52this textile is really rather light and buoyant in my view I'll just have to do something yeah unstick
18:00yourself I'll try okay thank you thanks Tim now I have to redo this entire jacket I just am freaking out
18:07all right designers so you have until 11 o'clock tonight your models will be coming in soon you
18:13know what to do we have to make it work thank you Tim
18:15how is everyone great how are you good all right designers you're going to have two hours to send
18:38your models to the L'Oreal Paris hair and makeup room and to prep them for the runway the Lord and
18:43tailor accessory wall use it thoughtfully and your models are coming in momentarily okay thank you
18:48see you later thanks Tim oh I'm not sewing anything I don't have time for this today I mean I've been
18:55nervous before but this is like I think the most nerve-wracking one I agree with him sorry mom and dad
19:01straight sleek and long and you get that volume what we want to do is use the ever style lifting spray
19:17you like it it's kind of Joan Crawford but futuristic version of it I think it's a nod to Joan we'll do a
19:31strong brow and maybe a beautiful red lip you know if you're familiar with the Indian movie stars they do
19:37really strong eyes so I really wanted to use a strong liner oh perfect designers in 10 minutes you and
19:50your models and I are going down to the runway okay and your loved ones are coming in they're going to
19:55see the runway show welcome to the runway everybody designers and loved ones as you know in fashion
20:11one day you're in and the next day you're out for this challenge you had the opportunity to make your
20:18own fabric with the help of HP and Intel and I have to say this is one of my favorite project from my
20:23challenges we asked you to create your own textile design to incorporate into a modern runway look
20:29and you had your loved ones drop by to also help you with your inspiration and I'm very excited to see
20:37your designs okay let's meet the judges first we have CFDA lifetime achievement award winner Michael
20:44course hey everyone welcome fashion director for Mary Clara magazine Nina Garcia hello and our guest
20:53judges for today Mondo Guerra fashion designer and Project Runway all-stars winner and Anya Ayongxi fashion
21:01designer and winner of Project Runway season 9 we will score your designs as they come down the runway one
21:10one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out okay let's start the show
21:28it's just so clean those pants are just moving and I'm just so excited I went with these pants and really
21:34executed them well I think I made something that I feel great about and I think that the judges are
21:46really going to respond well to it this is one of the times where I actually really love the
22:04design I achieved a lot by doing things that I haven't done before like using cotton then feel like I did
22:15that in a very good way it looks the most modern out of everyone
22:34I'm kind of nervous because I'm not in love with it
22:39I know that the judges are going to eat this up because that back zipper I know they're going to go for
22:54that they love the zippers
23:08I definitely see my story within the print it's definitely a reflection of me and my style and my
23:14aesthetic and who I am
23:21looks good it looks very clean and polished and I'm hoping that it at least reads well with the judges
23:30I see that everything is moving perfectly the trousers are slick down but when she walks there's a little
23:45a little bit of a kick to it
23:58I'm aesthetic I am in heaven right now
24:01I really don't know if I have a winning look I know it's quite different from any of the garments in
24:19the entire room
24:29it's a design I really love and I hope it's a winning look
24:33I kind of like it I see where it's going I see what it's about I feel like this garment is saying
24:47a lot and I feel like that ties in with my heritage really well
24:51I for the first time I think can breathe just a little bit knowing that I really like my look
25:12it looks great
25:13just enough of a print showing and the jacket those geometrical forms it feels like they're floating
25:22over the print and I love it
25:43if I call your name please step forward
25:48Elena please step forward
25:51Fabio
25:55congratulations your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round you can eat the runway
26:05the rest of you have the highest and the lowest scores one of you will be named the winner
26:10and one of you will be out
26:25one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
26:32Melissa tell us about your print and your design polish flag is red and white and I grew up in a very
26:36large Polish family and my older brother always told me to remember that blood is thicker than water
26:42and so this is what I created who would have ever thought that Melissa was going to go to Park Avenue
26:50and give us this uptown girl and to execute it well it fits perfectly the print is great I mean this
26:58is a whole different girl I just think the front it looks too much like wings I like it a little edgier
27:03I wish you would have injected a little bit more of your coolness into that somehow
27:09I think it looks chic and smart and a little sexy it's a dress that I think would appeal to a lot of
27:18girls and I liked that you tried something else I really appreciate that thank you
27:25Anya what do you think about this it could have pushed it a little bit further
27:29just a little bit but it's a it's a really good job thank you Ben tell us about your print and your
27:37design originally I'm from Guyana which is located in South America but of Indian heritage the feeling
27:43of the hibiscus flower is very evident in my work I figured I'll pick one color that's very popular in
27:48the culture and then keep the white to really make the color pop to me she looks like a Hawaiian airline
27:55hostess it's not good the flower on the bottom which we've seen many times looks like a rose with
28:00the hibiscus together it doesn't flow I mean there's so many things wrong with it it's really
28:07one of the worst ones today Ben we know you can do this you got to get to the next thing I mean does
28:13no one else tell you hey Ben by the way are you sure you want to do this again the judges have seen this
28:19already five times I mean your fabric florist at this point Tim nobody does no one ever say hint
28:24hint no don't do this again nobody well Ashley's had a first dress there was just a negative critique
28:29and I just wanted to make a second garment and just move forward with the time that I had left
28:35what I really would like to see from you is how you incorporate the prints into that fabric
28:42manipulation what this says to me is that you didn't know what to do with prints I think that
28:50that print is very simplistic and it also feels like it's three dresses in one well then I know you
28:59have a major skill set like you're really really good but there's such a disconnection whether it's
29:04the print or the three dresses meshed up together I mean you're giving me a lot of information in one
29:10dress and visually it confuses me Dimitri tell us about your print and your looks I was born in
29:19Belarus and my whole family are artists and I try to put all these emotions and memories and feelings
29:29together to create this two-dimensional illusion you did what we're looking for so you have design concept
29:40execution wearability all of that combined I think you stepped out of your dress comfort zone it's
29:49really really well done thank you you know the takeaway piece is this jacket this is like the
29:55showstopper here you know everything else could kind of just go away and this is a print challenge we
30:00can't see the print it's covered with the jacket I think it's a nice print but this entire look I think
30:07is great I mean look at the back I mean that is stunning what you've done I love how you made this
30:14illusion that these pieces are just floating I love it I would buy that that is crazy good
30:23I really really love how you took the print challenge a step further and I think it's super
30:29smart really really really powerful I love it thank you the jacket is phenomenal but what I think is
30:39most interesting is that the jacket is phenomenal because of the print and that is a print challenge
30:47makes me smile thank you
30:50Connor tell us about your print and your look I was a victim to really harsh bullying in school
30:57and I kind of wanted to like encompass these hands coming around and this bird like flying away and I
31:03wanted to end like kind of mesh the two together in an outfit and that's how I got this I don't
31:09understand this at all I mean it is not cool it is not edgy it is not modern I mean it's bizarre
31:15the whole point of this is that it's supposed to be something personal right but the print itself
31:21quite frankly is not compelling looks like a sheet of bird postage stamps but is the thought behind
31:27what you were trying to say you know something great absolutely I mean what I get from this print
31:35is not the flight or the freedom but on the contrary it's it's the struggle it's a sadness and the yeah
31:44but is that what we want to buy and wear no struggle I mean this is my hair this is my heritage you know
31:49what I'm saying and that was the most influential part of that heritage so I wanted to portray that
31:54part of that unfortunately it doesn't read in the garment and when it walked down the runway I kept
31:58thinking like is it old is it young where would you buy it is it tj maxx I can't tell but most of all
32:05it's just sort of like non-fashion it's just sort of in every way
32:13Sanji I wanted to print that kind of red tribal-esque and then I chose red white and blue because I'm
32:22American which is a little literal um and black as well because I'm black and it's hard to make a
32:29gigantic print for pants and make them work and I think you succeeded really oh my god I mean and
32:34the fit of these pants is very good thank you it's great when I walked down I was like wow and then I
32:42was surprised with the draped back I think it's young it's cool it's chic thank you well I think this
32:50is one of the most successful garments up there I think the pants are cut beautifully it's very
32:55elegant I mean it's it's it's really good thank you with that print if it wasn't right it would
33:01have looked like pac-man is eating her crush but in fact it's kind of perfect uh I think your attention
33:09to detail is really fantastic thank you
33:13Christopher for my fabric me and my mother had designed this ladybug print it's like our family
33:23mascot so I think it's really pretty I think it's okay and it's just a very simple dress and I feel
33:29like right now you guys have to really show what you've got like I always say wow show us something
33:35different like I think it's perfectly fine but fine you're not gonna win a challenge with a fine dress
33:42until you took out that piece um you couldn't see how beautiful the print was and I also don't really
33:47love the the silhouette I think it's a little like prom dress it's very expected and it is prom dressy
33:55but I do think the print is beautiful thank you this is the most disappointing execution that I have yet
34:02to see from you so when I saw it I was like what happened I mean it's very scrambled you can tell
34:10right it being you know the print challenge I would have really embraced that and not put that
34:16organza over it I think it gets a little messy I think it's a little over designed
34:23would I expect more from you certainly but you know she went to a party now I'd be like you know you
34:30could have made a sophisticated print with the ladybug so to create that print which in fact does look like
34:35upholstery like I could see curtains and a little you know it's very kitcheny I mean it's very blasé
34:43okay we've heard what you had to say we're gonna have a little chat and then I call you back out
34:48you can leave the runway
34:56let's talk about the designers that we did like Melissa did a good job today it was nice to see
35:02a real bright color from her it was nice to see something different polished colorful yeah this was
35:07a real transformation for her totally it was nice to see her stretch herself as a designer right but really
35:14the two people who stood out the most today were Dimitri and Sanji for me today Dimitri gave us this
35:21beautifully tailored jacket but I like that he thought about using the print in a different way
35:27with the peekaboo effect and I think it was beautifully crafted he clearly is very architectural clearly does
35:35phenomenal tailoring but this being the print challenge I felt like he kind of hit it I mean I
35:41feel the opposite to you I really thought that the jacket was amazing you would think that that suit
35:46was probably fifteen hundred dollars are you kidding for sure absolutely yes let's talk about Sanji
35:53those pants were spot-on and she made those pants look expensive the jersey top was great both garments
36:00were perfect yep when the girl walks in the back with that drape cowl yeah see that's the thing about
36:06Sanji's from head to toe it's pretty impeccable let's talk about the designers that we didn't like
36:12so much christopher he wasn't good and he wasn't bad christopher realized he had a bad print he tried to
36:20hide it great i think he was kind of clever right exactly i think he kind of scrambled but he made it
36:27happen yeah i don't like the design of gunners and i don't like the design events i don't like either one
36:31i want to send them both home you know at least i look at the proportion of ven's dress at least i
36:38know that he can get the garment finished polished done so i'm curious to see what it could be if it's
36:45another flower i'll scream he shouldn't be doing the same design over and over again and maybe tim has
36:51told yeah but we've told him i think gunner is more successful in his pattern over van the details on gunner
36:58for me killed it look at the proportion of it too the dress isn't long enough to be chic or short
