16 May - outlook presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00This 14-day outlook will take us into what for many parts of the country is the half-term holidays.
00:07And yes, the weather patterns are on the change.
00:09They've not changed for a while. We've had high pressure dominating for the past several days.
00:13It will continue to control our weather through the weekend and into the early part of next week,
00:18still bringing a lot of dry and sunny weather.
00:20But the jet stream is kind of transforming as we head into next week into a more kind of westerly pattern,
00:28a more traditional pattern that often brings us our weather from the Atlantic.
00:31And that's what we are likely to see.
00:33But not in the short term.
00:35High pressure dominating into the early part of next week.
00:38And even Wednesday, the most likely pressure pattern is for high pressure to be dominating up to the north or west of the UK,
00:45bringing Western areas the highest temperatures and similar for Thursday.
00:49By then, the chance has dropped a little bit.
00:52But even the second most likely scenario has high pressure nearby and will still be bringing a lot of dry weather.
00:58So basically, for much of the middle part of next week, we're expecting a lot of dry weather to continue and plenty of sunshine,
01:05particularly so in the west and still feeling quite warm.
01:08But at this time of year, when the breeze is coming in from the relatively chilly sea,
01:13it will always be cooler and potentially cloudy at times on some coasts.
01:18What about beyond that?
01:19Well, that's when we are more likely to see a change as we head towards Friday, the 23rd of May,
01:25and into the bank holiday weekend, Saturday, the 24th, Sunday, the 25th.
01:30By then, low pressure is becoming the more dominant feature.
01:33And the winds now as we head into that bank holiday coming in from the west.
01:38So we'll lose the easterly winds, more likely to get our weather coming in from the Atlantic.
01:43Those westerly winds means Western areas won't be as warm.
01:46But eastern areas will probably be a little bit warmer as we see that switch in wind direction,
01:51because at the moment, the winds are coming in from the cold North Sea.
01:54With that low pressure and the winds coming from the west, rain is much more likely.
01:59So good news.
02:00If you are after some rain, we are likely to see a change as we head towards the following weekend.
02:05But if you do have plans for the bank holiday, I can't stress enough.
02:08Keep up to date for the details.
02:10It's unlikely to be dry and sunny everywhere, but equally, it's unlikely to be raining everywhere all weekend.
02:15There will be some bright and fine weather to be had.
02:18But the detail for that, you need to be keeping across the forecast as we get closer to the time.
02:24This is still over a week away.
02:26So keep up to date with the forecast.
02:27But yes, we are going to see a change.
02:29We're losing the high pressure.
02:30That's shown here.
02:31Dates going along the bottom.
02:32The reds, that blocking area of high pressure that we've had,
02:35and it just shrinks and shrinks and shrinks, and the blue colours take over from that weekend,
02:40from Saturday the 24th onwards, more likely to have low pressure nearby.
02:45And that trend likely to continue as well into that half-term week.
02:50Now, the exact flavour of the low pressure and where we see the wettest weather, as I said,
02:55well, we'll have to firm up on the details closer to the time.
02:57But the most likely scenario is that the winds will be coming in from the northwest,
03:00bringing plenty of showers across the UK, and also with the winds coming from the northwest.
03:04That's likely to bring temperatures around or below average as we go through that week.
03:10But as always, with showers, there will be some sunshine in between.
03:14So, as I said, keep up to date with the forecast.
