00:00so you've been arrested on suspicion of threats to kill it's alleged that you have twice held a
00:10kitchen knife to the neck of your wife is that the knife that you picked up I just picked it up
00:15right okay and I just said if you had an affair yeah you know yeah this interest there's no
00:27malice in it whatsoever it's a bit so I'm sorry to say this but it's a bit of a waste of your time
00:45once a suspect is in custody the police have just 24 hours to find out what really happened
01:03the time is really ticking who's innocent who's guilty we're good to go this is your opportunity
01:14to talk to me there's two sides to every single story
01:44there's no one else waiting is there no I don't believe so all right I think you're next come
01:59up time for rest please the interesting thing about being a police officer is that you see
02:15you see the different side of society that the general members of the public don't see
02:20over a weekend probably roughly 75% of people that come into custody will be there for some sort of
02:40domestic incident obviously man look it's just an allegation all right we're obviously duty bound
02:57to investigate these matters yeah all right we do completely understand that there are always two
03:01sides to every story all right so no one here is saying you're guilty of it we basically need to
03:05interview you it's not going to be right now to be obviously spoken to probably at some point later
03:08on why is that football training or I doubt it I'll be honest with you yeah
03:17now I've got you down it's about five for eight is that right for you if not going to go stand there
03:3410 you're hopeful five I mean you look on there I'll give you five seven but that's pushing
03:42any alcohol to see them yeah how much you add them up you've been drinking all day have you yes like
03:58alcohol lager spirits
03:59what's with this come from is that what recently are today yeah during this incident or is it no no no this is
04:13early on today yeah all right straight watch your him at you do have certain rights um first one being
04:20if you want to you can speak to a solicitor all right they are free of charge mate they don't cost you
04:24money money you sure they're obviously there to help and guide you mate okay if you want one
04:29who do you need to speak to I'd like to speak to my mum I don't have to call her right now yeah I mean
04:40at some point you can just um later on when you get up um just ask your officers I don't want that
04:47what from your mum awesome okay uh for the popping down please grab him a drink or anything if he wants
04:57cheers lads thanks thanks mate cheers
04:59we get lots of um cases in custody where there are verbal threats made it doesn't necessarily have to
05:09be physical contact and that is a very difficult incident for the police to to deal with because
05:15it's very hard to to prove what one person has said to another but then it's vital for the police
05:22to take it seriously because we don't know whether it is just a one-off which is fueled by just an
05:29alcohol rage or something or there is an ongoing underlying domestic issue this could have been going
05:37on for years hello there it's a PC hall from Luton police station it is a domestic incident yeah we
05:58need to take a statement from her potentially in relation to those offenses Bedfordshire police receive
06:03200 reports of domestic abuse every week the most serious incidents are referred to a team of
06:10specialist officers yeah so it could be a while I might have to do a full file because I might be
06:16keeping him in court for tomorrow it shows what a big problem it is in the UK when two women a week
06:22are dying as a result of domestic abuse and violence our primary concern at this moment is safeguarding
06:28her and carry out that initial investigation abuse unit was set up about a year ago and there's a lot
06:34of high-risk domestics were coming in and there was no unit to deal with them volunteers were asked
06:40for and I jumped in there and said yeah I'd like to be a part of that quarter past no worries okay speak
06:46to you soon bye bye we are very very busy a lot of jobs coming in all the time it's constant
06:56that's our wedding one of my good pals one of my good pals wedding it's a good day actually
07:07I was drinking vodka lemonade I was drinking lager you know I was drinking it it's a session
07:17I left early to go home went home wife come home had an argument here I am
07:27she happens how long have the two been together seven years seven years we met in a nightclub
07:42in Luton she looked absolutely stunning I just been asked her sometimes do you know what I mean
07:49ruin things don't get me wrong I wouldn't be in here if I weren't an idiot one silly night of being an
07:59idiot here I am you know drink too much and all of a sudden next thing you know why five hours eight
08:09at your door knock knock wife rung them an hour later they turned up why are you an hour late the
08:17argument's done and dusted now but I'm still here now
08:22hello you're through to Bevershire police I am I'm calling but I want to call an anomaly for yourself
08:44okay okay right what's it regarding I've just seen this woman she was outside of that one
08:50like he was kicking off you know
08:53and he's attacked her taking her in the house and she was very very scared
09:01the majority of jobs we attend now are some way domestic related
09:15each case is different because domestic violence can happen in any household
09:23never make assumptions is what experiences has taught me because you cannot just assume things so it's
09:35important to get the full facts yeah come in what's your name Jamie Matthews yeah what's going on today
09:45nothing we've had a drink okay my girlfriend's had an argument yep all right shall we go inside and find out what's going on
09:53you said you were drinking yeah and then what's happened it just got a bit out of hand we've had a little bit of a
10:01disagreement you said it you said it went out of hand no I've never hit her or nothing you know what I mean
10:09I've never hit her okay and I would never hit a woman all right you know what I mean never
10:14something's gone on here today hasn't it we had a bit of a disagree no no if you just I'm talking to
10:20Rebecca now if me and you go over there keep an eye on him I just want to speak to her when you're not around
10:29so what's happened then we had a few drinks I'm not going to lie I'm not pissed but I've had a few drinks
10:36okay you know he in there got a bit
10:40nasty and he had my front door keys and my back door keys and he locked me prisoner in my own home
10:50all right if you could stay here give me a second Jamie basically what's going to happen now is um
10:56I'm going to arrest you okay on suspicion of an assault
10:59on your girlfriend okay she said that no it doesn't matter who said anything okay just relax
11:06can you just wait inside for me okay just relax all right you just stand up put your hands out for
11:15me Jamie come and pull up we're gonna have to go to the neck
11:18we do see the cycle of domestic violence often um people call the police they just want the
11:45immediate threat gone allegations is bullshit once that immediate threats gone um and then and then
11:52they've had time to think about it they generally then just go back with the offender
11:58I mean the obvious thing you hear is well I love them
12:05but nobody should be in a relationship where they're actually being abused
12:11you
12:22okay
12:37Nicky for no fucking reason.
12:40Hello, babe. Do you want a shag?
12:42Do you want a quick shag, babe?
12:44Behave.
12:45I'm talking to the mate. What's your name?
12:48Jamie.
12:49Right, Jamie.
12:52Okay, what's your surname, please?
12:54Matthew.
12:55Hello there, ladies and friends.
12:57Come inside, please.
12:58Never hit a woman, never will me.
13:01What's the point? That's pussy, does it do with that?
13:04What?
13:05That hit a woman.
13:07I'd rather hit men.
13:09It's more fun.
13:11It's five past five now.
13:14You won't be interviewed until you've sobered up a little.
13:18Fine, I'm sober.
13:20You're not sober.
13:21I am. I know what I'm talking about, mate.
13:23I never hit no woman.
13:24Approximately how much alcohol have you consumed in the last 24 hours?
13:28Well, 14 bottles of blood and about four vodka and alcohol.
13:34No.
13:35You've obviously got quarters in your, erm, you know...
13:37I don't have a top.
13:39God, they're wanked, Jamie.
13:44I trust you are.
13:47I can do it with Hank, I saw my number pro.
13:50I think you've checked me in before, Sarge.
13:55Well, I might well have done.
13:58Remember their face.
14:00I think he's arrested me before as well.
14:05No harm, Danny.
14:08Maybe being criminal, but a little woman would be, yeah.
14:13That's right.
14:14OK.
14:15Mr. Mack.
14:16Dead this way, mate.
14:17No, there was one girl in there.
14:18Oh, shit.
14:19Do you want to go in the yard or in the cell?
14:21Yeah, yard first.
14:22Yeah.
14:23You got that?
14:24Cheers.
14:25The button's there, OK?
14:26When you get too cold.
14:27The button's there, OK?
14:28When you get too cold.
14:51It's gonna be here.
14:56Jamie's partner is unwilling to give a statement.
15:02Police want to speak to the woman who made the 999 call.
15:09How you doing?
15:10You all right?
15:11Can I, can I come in?
15:21He's now being arrested, OK?
15:23So we're gonna need some sort of paperwork from you.
15:26They both knocked on my door and argued at my front door, but he punched her in the face
15:30at my front door.
15:31What time?
15:32Was it just before you called the police?
15:33It was way before that.
15:35The fights went on a couple of hours before that.
15:38And I told him to move from my door.
15:40I said, look, I've got the children in my house.
15:42Do not bring trouble to my door.
15:44Move from my door.
15:45And he started shouting at me, calling me all the names under the sun and moved away.
15:50Yeah.
15:51And then he dived on me.
15:52That's when I fell on the floor and he fell on top of me.
15:54Yeah.
15:55I had blood on my face and arm, you know, boy, punch me in the face.
15:58OK.
15:59He spit all the inside of my lip.
16:00Yeah, yeah.
16:01I'm not bothered about what he did to me.
16:03OK.
16:04It's just her.
16:05OK.
16:06That's why I called the police.
16:07OK.
16:08I love her to bits, innit?
16:09And I know she might.
16:10I don't know if she's finished with him or not.
16:12But I don't want her thinking I've stabbed her in the back, you know what I mean?
16:18Pardon?
16:23Babe, what's the matter?
16:24What's the matter?
16:25Just calm down on me.
16:26What's the matter?
16:27No.
16:29What's the matter?
16:30I can't fucking deal with this shit right now.
16:33What?
16:34What's the matter?
16:36What's the matter?
16:38No.
16:39I'm not dealing with this shit right now.
16:41What's the matter?
16:42You're not dealing with what?
16:43Babe.
16:44I will speak to you later.
16:45No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
16:46Babe, calm down.
16:47Please be around.
16:48Please be around.
16:49No.
16:50Please be around.
16:51Oh.
16:58I know what's going to happen anyway.
16:59You're going to keep him in tonight.
17:00You're going to do whatever.
17:01And he's going to get out tomorrow with no charges.
17:03But I guarantee you'll be walking by tomorrow.
17:07If she would have said, yeah, we did that, and would have come up front about it, yeah,
17:11we might have done something.
17:12But because she's denying it because she's scared, he's going to get nothing.
17:16He's going to be walking.
17:17Of course he's going to deny it.
17:18Of course he's going to deny it.
17:19She's scared of him.
17:20It was just a little conversation on Facebook, and then we just met up.
17:32Like, we started speaking for a bit.
17:34And we met up, went for a few drinks, and then it just went from there.
17:41We've been together five months, but we've known each other for a year.
17:48She's caring, funny.
17:50She'd do everything for me.
17:53See?
17:55She's just amazing.
17:57That's what I could really say about her.
18:02She's just my world.
18:15All right.
18:16Right hand first mate.
18:17Yeah.
18:18Four fingers together.
18:19Nice and balanced.
18:20And catch up with us.
18:21Nice and balanced.
18:22A man has been arrested after his wife claimed he threatened to kill her.
18:27Okay.
18:28Which side then first?
18:32PC Wes Hall, from the Domestic Abuse Unit, is investigating the case.
18:42A key piece of evidence is footage from cameras worn by the arresting officers.
18:51No, no too.
18:52I don't know if a bee's like a tree knock.
18:53Hello.
18:54Hello.
18:55Hey.
18:56You alright?
18:57How are we doing fella?
18:58Can we come in.
18:59Yeah.
19:00Just a little invite.
19:01Right.
19:02Will you step inside now?
19:03Yep.
19:04Come in.
19:06Is there anyone else in the house?
19:07Is there anyone else in the house?
19:08No.
19:09Just so.
19:10Just you two?
19:11Yeah.
19:12Have you cut your head?
19:13He's just making the drink.
19:14Fair enough.
19:15Here's my set.
19:16So what's going on then fella.
19:17What's going on then fella?
19:20Everything comes last night.
19:22I agree, yeah.
19:23You know what I mean?
19:24Yep.
19:25But it's been argued enough to call us tonight.
19:31It's just got out of hand.
19:33Do you know what I mean?
19:35Yeah, I think so.
19:37Has the ship called the police before?
19:39No.
19:40This is the first time.
19:41This is a waste of time, do you know what I mean?
19:45No.
19:46I know you've got some.
19:47Yeah.
19:48Do you know what I mean?
19:49Did someone have a knife out?
19:51No.
19:54Because that was the information we got, that you were waving a knife around?
20:02No.
20:03You know what I mean?
20:06Yeah.
20:11Body cam has made a big difference in the way we do our job.
20:15It shows the emotion of somebody.
20:18It shows the way, if it's in the home, how the house is.
20:23Might be holes in the wall.
20:25Might be an anger issue going on.
20:27Things that you wouldn't get into a statement.
20:31It's made a very big difference.
20:33Especially if the victim doesn't want to put pen to paper,
20:36doesn't want to make that complaint.
20:38Then it's got that first account of what's happened.
20:41I'm just going to put the light on.
20:43What's been going on?
20:46Pushing.
20:47It was only when he pulled on my cell.
20:49I thought I was not scared.
20:51What did he do?
20:53Put it to my neck.
20:54He put it to your neck?
20:55What?
20:56Not at all.
20:57Because it's the help I felt.
20:58I wasn't saying he would do it,
21:00but I obviously felt scared of my friend at the time.
21:03That's why I rang you up.
21:04You've got a little mark on your arm.
21:06What's that for?
21:07I don't know.
21:08It might be when he grabbed me.
21:10Did he grab you?
21:11When did he grab you?
21:12Well.
21:13Because she's into me and that's what he does.
21:16When you pull the knife out,
21:17I've been in the knife out there too.
21:19Okay.
21:20Erm.
21:21It's fine.
21:22It's fine.
21:23It's fine.
21:24For fuck's sake.
21:26I was sick.
21:27You didn't ever come in.
21:28You didn't ever come in.
21:29I was fucking phoned him about an hour ago.
21:31We've had an afternoon.
21:32We've had an afternoon, lads.
21:33Alright.
21:34Let's just pop an afternoon, lads.
21:36We've had an afternoon, lads.
21:37Let's pop a user on and we'll go downstairs.
21:40You don't usually pull the knife out of people, do you?
21:42No, it's fine, mate.
21:43It's all right.
21:44Are you pushing?
21:45You don't pull the knife out of people.
21:46So, we're going to nick him.
21:49Because putting a knife to someone's throat isn't the way forward, is it?
21:52What are you willing to do with regards to...
21:55Nothing.
21:56You don't want to make a complaint or anything like that?
21:59Because of the nature of what he's done, we can't leave him here.
22:04If the victim is not willing to assist the police with their inquiries
22:08and they might be too nervous to go to court,
22:11they don't want to go to court in relation to their partner,
22:13then police force, we can do a victim as prosecution
22:19and we will gather all the evidence
22:21and providing the evidence is strong enough,
22:23we can then take that case forward and prosecute that suspect.
22:28If we're resting on suspicion of threats to kill,
22:30you don't have to say any of the mayhem and offensive,
22:31you don't have to mention any of the questions,
22:32something to that and I'm caught,
22:33and then you do say maybe good evidence.
22:35Do you understand the caution?
22:36No worries, Pat. No worries.
22:37All right, you understand the question.
22:38I've dealt with quite a few cases where it starts off with verbal abuse
22:43and then that abuse slowly becomes violent.
22:47It might be a little push to start with and it moves on,
22:51it escalates and then before you know it, it's a punch.
22:55It builds right up and, you know,
22:58we do see some victims come in with some horrendous injuries.
23:02All right, just put the other arm out.
23:04Just down like that, mate. That's it.
23:08If we can nip it in the bud before, then we will do.
23:12No one should have to suffer.
23:38There's some hairstyles going on in this team, isn't there?
23:43No.
23:44You know, Tam's got, you know, he's got acceptable hair,
23:48you know, for a man of his years and stuff.
23:50And then there's you, Johnson,
23:51who's trying to desperately cling on to his hair,
23:54desperately trying to cling on to the fact
23:56that he's youthful and got hair.
23:59And then you've got the boy band over there.
24:01Look at them, look.
24:02Look at them all.
24:03All right, should we hand over?
24:06Ready, steady, go.
24:08Flick the switch.
24:10He's had domestic with his missus.
24:13He's been at a wedding all day,
24:15so he was drinking all through the day yesterday.
24:18He's then gone home and stopped drinking
24:21and then obviously had this domestic and then come here.
24:25He was looking to get out of here by 11
24:27because he's got football training.
24:29I've sort of said to him,
24:30that's probably not going to happen.
24:36The suspect's wife doesn't want to pursue her complaint against him.
24:47Let's go through with him.
24:49But even if she remains reluctant, he could still be charged.
24:54Take yourself a seat around the other side there for us.
24:57Stewart has refused legal advice and will defend himself in interview.
25:02Have they looked after you all right?
25:04Yeah, they'll be fine mate.
25:05Yeah, excellent.
25:06Tea, water.
25:07We want the suspect to give their account of what's happened,
25:12put the facts that we've gathered to them
25:16and get a reaction from them.
25:19And if you don't understand, just say.
25:24Yeah, no worries.
25:25Some people would come in and want to say a word to you.
25:29Other people were very jolly almost down there.
25:35They thought they'd done nothing wrong.
25:37I've got nothing to hide and ask me anything sort of thing.
25:40So, you've been arrested on suspicion of threats to kill.
25:50Are you responsible for that offence for which you have been arrested?
25:54I don't think I... It's in jest.
25:57When you came to Luton custody, you made a comment.
25:59You said, fucking argument spiralled out of control.
26:02Could you just tell me what you meant by that?
26:04I'd worked myself up.
26:06I'd thought that she'd...
26:08We was at a wedding all day.
26:10A friend's wedding.
26:12Okay.
26:13And I'd worked myself up.
26:14I'd left because I was drunk.
26:15I'd gone home.
26:16I'd been home for over an hour and I'd worked myself up
26:18thinking that she was having an affair.
26:20So that's what you believed?
26:21So that's what I believed and then that's how we started arguing.
26:24Were you angry when she got home?
26:26No.
26:27I was drunk.
26:29How much did you have to drink yesterday?
26:31A fair bit.
26:32Can you remember how much?
26:34Or...
26:35A fair bit to you might be an absolute bucket full to me.
26:3812, 14 pints.
26:39That's a fair bit, isn't it?
26:41Right.
26:42As I say, you've been arrested on suspicion of threats to kill.
26:46It's alleged that you have twice held a kitchen knife to the neck of your wife.
26:50So can you explain to me why you took a knife?
26:53I didn't hold it against either.
26:55I didn't grab her and hold it like that.
26:57I just picked her and I said...
26:59In jest.
27:01Right.
27:02If you had an affair, I would kill her.
27:05So in jest you said if you had an affair, I'd kill you.
27:08Yes, yes.
27:09As you would with your wife.
27:10Well, maybe in different terms, you know?
27:15What was her response to that?
27:17She was distraught, mate.
27:20I'm ashamed that I've done it to my wife.
27:24Do you know what I mean?
27:25Yeah.
27:26It's an absolute embarrassment.
27:27I've got an exhibit here, which is just a photo.
27:30Is that the knife that you picked up?
27:32I just picked it up like that.
27:33Right.
27:34Like that.
27:35Okay.
27:36And I just said, if you had an affair, I would kill her.
27:40Right.
27:41That's where it's come from.
27:42Do you know what I mean?
27:43Yeah.
27:44It's in jest.
27:45There's no malice in it whatsoever.
27:47And how close did that knife get to?
27:50It was this far apart.
27:52So how far did you say that is?
27:53It was talking.
27:54It was talking what?
27:55Okay.
27:56Three, four foot.
27:57Three, four foot.
27:58What made you pick the knife up?
28:00I'm an idiot.
28:01Right.
28:02Was there any thought behind it when you picked it up?
28:04No.
28:05So what was your intention with the knife?
28:06Nothing.
28:07Nothing.
28:08Was it to harm her?
28:09No.
28:10Or was it just to scare her?
28:11I would never harm my wife.
28:12Or did she say, or...?
28:14It's...
28:15I can't really...
28:16It's a bit blurry, to be honest.
28:18Okay.
28:19It's an argument.
28:20Do you know what I mean?
28:24It's a bit...
28:25I'm sorry to say this, but it's a bit of a waste of your time.
28:32Is it a waste of our time, though?
28:33Yes.
28:34Your wife has complained that you've held a knife to her throat,
28:38and if she's in distress about that, then we need to investigate that, don't we?
28:42No, I don't blame you.
28:43I do what you're saying.
28:44So...
28:45It's not...
28:46I don't think it's a waste of time, in that sense, that we've got to investigate that
28:49and carry that on through.
28:50Mate, I've never done anything like this before, and I'll never do anything like this again.
28:55Yeah.
28:56It's an argument that has absolutely spiraled out of control, and it's probably going to ruin
29:02my life.
29:03All I want to do is get out of here now, and go past the nearest garage, get some flowers.
29:10Right.
29:11Box of chocolates.
29:12And a lad of groveling.
29:17I've got no further questions for you.
29:22I'm going to conclude this interview.
29:24The time by this device is 11.22 hours.
29:29What's the crap now, then?
29:33She's not made a complaint against you.
29:36Erm...
29:37She doesn't want to press any charges, but she was scared last night, and...
29:40Mate, mate...
29:41She...
29:42I can't criticise her for putting a call in, because that's...
29:44I can't.
29:45I wouldn't...
29:46I wouldn't...
29:47I'd do the same as well, do you know what I mean?
29:49I...
29:50We might have to go to Crown Prosecution Service.
29:52They're either going to say, no further action, because there's no complaint from her,
29:56or they're going to say, we need to put a charge in.
29:58Even though she's made no complaint, we can do what we call a victimless prosecution.
30:02I just want to get out of here.
30:15Back to the room.
30:16Back to the room, yeah.
30:17Right, if she's...
30:18Keep your shoes off for us.
30:20No worries, I'll speak to you as soon as I can.
30:21Alright.
30:22Hi.
30:23Hi.
30:24Basically, he said...
30:25It was done in jest.
30:26I was drunk.
30:27I had evil thoughts in my head that she was having an affair.
30:28So, I picked the kitchen knife up from the side.
30:29I held it, I was about three foot away, and I said I'd fucking kill you if you had an
30:36affair.
30:37You guys have been an absolute idiot.
30:38I wish I'd never said anything.
30:39I would have said anything about it.
30:40No worries.
30:41I'm sorry.
30:42I'll speak to you as soon as I can.
30:43Alright.
30:44Hi.
30:45Hi.
30:46Hi.
30:47Hi.
30:48Hi.
30:49Hi.
30:50Basically, he said, it was done in jest.
30:51I was drunk.
30:52I had evil thoughts in my head that she was having an affair.
30:55So, I picked the kitchen knife up from the side, I held it.
30:56I wish I'd never said it. I was like, ooh, okay.
30:59It's going to be CPS, because he's admitted to holding a knife there.
31:03And she was scared by it.
31:06It's taking a little twist now. I didn't think he was saying anything.
31:11You guys have ruined my life.
31:13You know, ruined my marriage.
31:15You guys have got a lot of groveling to do.
31:17I didn't tell him that if he is charged, he can't speak to her or anything until court,
31:20because he'll have conditions not to contact or not to go to the address.
31:26I'm not a career criminal.
31:35What do you do you want to join?
31:39I'm a male gigolo.
31:42Nah, I'm a carpenter.
31:43I'm a carpenter. I'm just a clown, isn't I?
31:46Nah, I'm a carpenter.
31:47I've been enjoying it.
31:49I've been for 17 years now, since I left school.
31:54Keeps me on the straight and narrow.
31:56I just want to get out of this. I'll come and play football.
32:11Come through.
32:13Jamie Matthews is suspected of an assault on his partner Rebecca and her friend Donna.
32:19It's been a long day.
32:21Yeah.
32:22Awesome.
32:25You all good?
32:26Yeah.
32:27Can you tell me what happened yesterday?
32:30We went around Donald's.
32:31We had a few drinks.
32:33And then her ex-boyfriend rang her, rang Rebecca.
32:37And then that's what started the argument between me and Rebecca.
32:40Yeah.
32:41Um, did you push Rebecca?
32:43No.
32:44I don't remember pushing her.
32:48I've never laid one hand on her before, you know what I mean?
32:51Why would I start now?
32:54Did you hit Donna at all?
32:56No.
32:56She's told us, okay, that you have lunged towards her when she's opened the door.
33:03She's obviously fallen backwards.
33:05You've fallen on top of her.
33:07And out of self-defense, she's punched you.
33:09And then you've then punched her in the face.
33:12No, that ain't true.
33:14Not true?
33:14No.
33:15No.
33:21Okay.
33:21Um, for the tape, I'm going to produce exhibit, um, DG1, uh, which is the photographs of injuries.
33:28Um, first of all, describe who this is in the picture.
33:31She had them bruises when we got there.
33:33Okay, I'm going to produce exhibit AM1.
33:38Can you just describe to the tape who this is?
33:42Rebecca.
33:43Okay, um, and Rebecca's also your partner.
33:45Yeah.
33:45Okay.
33:48What can you see from this picture?
33:50A mark on her arm.
33:51Okay.
33:51Um, and what, anything else other than a mark?
33:54A bit of bruising.
33:55Okay.
33:56How did she get that injury?
33:57Well, I don't know.
33:58Did you cause that injury?
33:59No.
34:01Could you have caused that injury?
34:03No.
34:04No three times.
34:06When you say you don't think so, so that's the possibility that you could have done something?
34:09Right, maybe.
34:10Maybe, okay.
34:13So, what could have happened last night?
34:15Obviously, I could have pushed her without knowing, but I'm sure I know.
34:19You could have pushed her for that injury to be caused?
34:22Well, I just said that to you.
34:22You didn't know.
34:23Okay, so did you cause that injury?
34:26No.
34:26I don't know.
34:27You don't know?
34:29So you could have done?
34:30Because I think you did.
34:35I brought a hand on someone that I love and a woman as well.
34:39You know what I mean?
34:42Never hit a woman.
34:43It's called respect.
34:44But you mentioned in here, again, when you came into custody yesterday, that you don't
34:48hit women.
34:49But I've got a couple of statements to say that you have struck and assaulted.
34:53Yeah, statements and words.
34:55You have struck and assaulted two females.
34:57How do you explain the difference between those?
35:02I explain the difference by saying that I don't hit women, as I've told you time and
35:06time again.
35:07I think you did.
35:08I think I didn't.
35:09I think I know.
35:10Is there anyone else that could obviously back you up and say that you didn't hit them?
35:15Well, there was no one else there.
35:16Yeah, but if you ring my dad, my dad would tell you that I'd only hit women.
35:19Obviously, no, if it's your dad wasn't there.
35:21Yeah, but my dad knows no matter how, if I get agitated or whatnot, I've never hit a
35:26woman.
35:26In that case, then, the time by my watch is 12.46, and I will continue to interview.
35:56I thought I'd really love someone, innit?
36:16Police must now refer both cases to the Crown Prosecution Service.
36:22Unfortunately, all prosecutors are still busy servicing other calls.
36:26Please continue to hold.
36:28But with the victims unwilling to press charges, the chance of gaining convictions is significantly
36:33reduced.
36:35We take domestic abuse very seriously.
36:39We don't want to see any escalation.
36:41We don't want to see it get worse.
36:43You just don't want to see the victim in the hospital because they've had another argument.
36:49And sometimes you only get that one chance to prosecute those offenders.
36:58Please continue to hold or press one if you wish to receive an automatic callback.
37:03A man has been arrested after his wife claimed he held a knife to her throat and threatened
37:23to kill her.
37:23She doesn't want to press charges against her husband, but the severity of her allegations
37:30mean that the police will still try to charge him.
37:32Yeah, he's in custody now.
37:44PC Wes Hall must present his case to the CPS.
37:47Well, in the interview, he said basically he's reached for a kitchen knife as the exhibit
37:56DMB1.
37:58He grabbed that knife and he held it towards her.
38:02He said he was three to four foot away.
38:04She said it was held to her neck.
38:06And at the same time, he said it was in jest, but he said, I would kill you if you had an
38:12affair.
38:14But she's not assisting police.
38:17She's basically said in a signed statement that she doesn't want to push you in a complaint
38:22that it's her husband and she believes it's a one-off incident.
38:26Yeah, it was an argument that escalated and it got out of hand.
38:31What's your feeling towards this?
38:33Do you think we'll get a charge out of it?
38:36No.
38:40Even though the officers have seen her distressed state, would that count?
38:45And we've got it on body worn.
38:49The fact that he's admitted to the holding and pointing of the knife during interviews
38:56has gone.
39:02Okay.
39:05Okay.
39:06Eight, eight, zero, zero, one, sir, assault.
39:13That's great.
39:13Thank you very much for your time.
39:15Cheers, then.
39:16Bye-bye now.
39:19Charge for that assault.
39:21That's not a bad result.
39:23End of the day.
39:24Excellent.
39:24Knife on, well done, then.
39:25Potentially, this could have been a murder.
39:29If he's held the knife that closely, he's that drunk.
39:32Only takes one slip.
39:35That knife could have been in her throat.
39:38And I think CPS saw the seriousness of that as well.
39:41She was scared on that body worn cam.
39:47It's PC Hall, Luton Police Station.
39:51I know you've been waiting around all day.
39:53Just come off the phone to Crown Prosecution Service.
39:56I know you didn't want him charged with anything.
39:58But they are charging him with common assault.
40:02The fact is that all the evidence is there to say you were in fear.
40:09You put your 999 call in, in fear of what he was doing.
40:14And I understand what you're saying.
40:17And I hear what you're saying.
40:18But at the end of the day, that's the charge they're going with.
40:23All right.
40:24I know it's a bit of a shock to you, after what you said.
40:30Okay, then.
40:31I'll get that sorted out.
40:31So I'll get you the court date.
40:34And we'll go from there.
40:36All right, then.
40:38I'll speak to you soon, then.
40:40Bye-bye now.
40:41We do step into people's personal relationships.
40:48You know, we're putting orders on where we're taking one member of that family away from a home sometimes.
40:55It can be tough.
40:56Especially when you get a victim saying,
40:59my children are missing their dad.
41:03But we have to do what's best for that family.
41:11You ready to come up to the sergeant's desk?
41:17The CPS have also come to a decision about Jamie Matthews.
41:22Rough.
41:24Let's go.
41:31Okay, Mr. Matthews.
41:32So you're going to be charged with three offenses.
41:35If you listen to this officer, she will formally charge you.
41:38The first one is assault by beating.
41:42You assaulted Rebecca by beating her, contrary to section 39, the Criminal Justice Act, 1988.
41:48The second one is also assault by beating.
41:50You've assaulted Donna by beating her.
41:52And the third one is criminal damage to property under the value of £5,000.
41:57Do you have any reply to those?
42:00No?
42:02Okay, you're going to be bound to attend Luton Magistrates Court on the second of next month.
42:08There are conditions attached to this bail.
42:10Not to contact or communicate in any way, directly or indirectly, with Donna or Rebecca,
42:15including via social media.
42:18Do you understand that?
42:19Okay, so make sure you...
42:20Okay.
42:29I don't know how I could get down for a beat.
42:31I don't know.
42:33I'm going to fucking lay down.
42:35It's all right.
42:35We're finally getting there.
42:51Right, they're going to go over charge of common assault.
42:55Wife's not happy about that because she didn't want that, but at the end of the day it's
42:59a police thing rather than her.
43:01That charge means you're going to go to court and they will see if you plead guilty or not
43:05guilty, so I'd suggest you get a solicitor after this and let them know what's going
43:09on.
43:10You're going to go to a different address.
43:11You're going to go to your mum's address, and that will be your bail conditions to go
43:15to that address.
43:16I know you will need to get stuff from your house, and we're going to have to arrange through
43:21a third party to get that initially.
43:23But can I speak to that?
43:26Officially it is not to contact her and not to go to the home address, but if you do contact
43:31her and she makes any complaint because you've made any threats or anything like that,
43:34and you would then breach in court bail.
43:36As soon as we can get to the desk, then we'll get you up there, do charge and get you out
43:40of here.
43:41Alright.
43:42Alright.
43:43let's go.
43:44Sorry.
43:45No.
43:46No.
43:47Let me go.
43:48No.
43:49I'm sorry, yeah, yeah.
43:50No.
43:51Ah, yeah.
43:52No.
43:52Okay.
43:53No.
43:54It's gone.
43:55It's gone.
43:56I can't hold, no.
43:57No.
43:58Not, it's gone.
43:59No.
44:00No.
44:01That is gone.
44:02No.
44:03No.
44:04No.
44:05No.
44:06No.
44:07No.
44:08No.
44:09No.
44:10No.
44:11I don't normally trust me with the keys.
44:33I've asked if you can just grab your blanket and your rubbish there.
44:36Your mum's actually in the front waiting for you, and she's turned up.
44:44OK mate, do you have to explain what's going to happen to you?
44:50OK, you're going to be charged with conditions.
44:52Being charged with common assault on the 9th of the 8th of 2015 at Luton in the county of
44:58Bedfordshire, contrary to section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act of 1988.
45:02It is what it is. It's not your wife. I know she made the phone call, she was in fear at the time, but the decision at the end of the day is down to us as a force on where we go and how we deal with that.
45:17The question is how does society perceive domestic abuse? Do they see it as just a person with two black eyes, broken jaw?
45:24Is she mum? She's down there.
45:26She's down there, is she?
45:27Yeah.
45:28A person suffering emotional abuse? You wouldn't know if you just passed them in the street.
45:31You don't see what goes on behind closed doors, that threat, the harassment that's been going on.
45:38And if we can make a difference to that person and deal with that suspect, then we're going to take that seriously and we'll deal with that.
45:45And if we can make a difference to that person and deal with that suspect, then we're going to take that seriously and we'll deal with that.
45:52And if we can make a difference, we can make a difference, we can make a difference to that person and deal with that suspect, then we're going to take that seriously and we'll deal with that.
46:05We'll deal with that.
46:35We'll deal with that.
47:03We'll deal with that.
