24 Hours in Police Custody S03E02
Transcript
00:00I can't explain how life-changing it is when we knock on that door. It's literally
00:17like walking into a house and throwing a hand grenade in there and letting it
00:21explode. Your life is about to take a completely different path. Indecent
00:26images of children have been downloaded at this address. I'm going to place you all under
00:32arrest now on suspicion of possessing, making and distributing indecent images of children.
00:38To a shake in a bit. Life ruined pretty much, isn't it?
00:43Once a suspect is in custody, the police have 24 hours to investigate and interview.
01:05After that, it's either charge or release.
01:08You have been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, on suspicion of stalking,
01:14on suspicion of GBH, position and making of indecent images of children,
01:19on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. Start explaining.
01:25It's the police's job to ask what really happened. Where were you on the 28th of March?
01:31It was not me. I was not there. That could have been a hundred and one people. There's nothing to do
01:36with me. Who's innocent? Who's guilty?
01:49Why would Pete say that he'd assaulted him? Because he's deluded. He's a drunk.
01:53Well, that's nonsense.
01:54Oh, please, stop me your hand. From the street to the interrogation rooms.
02:00Where's the knife? Did you have a knife?
02:02He makes a specific threat that he is going to kill her.
02:06From the suspects to the head of CID. That's one hell of a shirt, David. I'm loving it.
02:15These are the men and women who have just 24 hours to find the evidence.
02:19I'm not letting him get away with it. I want him nicked and charged.
02:24If he kicks off, I'm out of the door. I'm a lover, not a fighter.
02:27Will they discover it before time runs out?
02:34Good news. Yeah. Got him.
02:38This is a Beverly Street Operation Ops salute. We believe someone at the address has been file
02:56sharing indecent images of children. Myself and Emma, maybe one other, just go to the door. There's a
03:02child at the location so we don't need to go in too heavy-handed. Explain the reason for the warrant.
03:08We'll get arrested and out of the house and then you guys can come in and conduct the search.
03:16That's how it's going to pan out.
03:20Detective Constable Paul Fitzharris is part of a Bedfordshire Police Task Force.
03:25They're involved in a UK-wide operation to tackle a surge in online child pornography.
03:36Tired and just tired.
03:40I do not like half past four starts, I have to say.
03:44It's never something I'd ever thought of doing to catch paedophiles for a living. All my friends and
03:50family say to me, why on earth do you want to do that job? But it's good to lock these people up and
03:55get them away from children.
04:01Before I joined this unit, I was quite sheltered from this. And looking at these poor children
04:07being sexually abused, it made me angry. I remember going home thinking, just wow,
04:16and I kept on going over my head, over my head. That did scar me because I do have a little girl
04:22myself. The team act on intelligence they receive from the National Crime Agency.
04:29This allows them to trace computers accessing illegal material.
04:37Hello, good morning. My name's Detective Paul Fitzharris from the Public Protection Unit
04:41at Bevershire Police. Myself and my colleagues need to come in and have a chat.
04:52Who else is in the house for sleep? Yeah, okay. Well, let's leave it like that.
04:57Basically, we have a search warrant given to us by the Magistrates Court. Now, this is based on
05:02intelligence we've been received about the illegal downloading and sharing of indecent images of
05:08children. Okay, now, of children. That's right. Okay, based on that information, I'm going to place
05:15yourself under arrest. Okay, on suspicion of possession making and distribution of indecent images
05:21of children. We're obviously mindful you've got a child here. Okay, so that'll be done tactfully.
05:27Don't want to upset. Okay. Okay. I'll give you a call that he wants to let you know what's going on, okay?
05:57Good morning.
06:13Good morning. Time of arrest. It was 0645. And arrested for offence.
06:19The possession making and distribution of indecent images of children.
06:27And your occupation. Do you want to take a seat on the bench for a moment?
06:33I'll talk to you later. Yeah, of course.
06:39What are we doing with him today?
06:40He's a gynaecologist. So by the end of the day, play today will be suspended. Yeah, so yeah, it's a bit of a
06:49that's why it was a high risk one. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, what his job is, he's not only a doctor,
06:54he's a gynaecologist. I'm going to sort that thing out. Yeah.
06:59Always rings alarm bells when you get. Yeah, absolutely.
07:08The police must now link the doctor to the illegal activity traced to his address.
07:12Who's with this laptop? All of yours.
07:19All right, I'm going to sit down with you and explain.
07:23Okay.
07:27When you know that you've got a husband and a wife and family and children there,
07:31it's heartbreaking to do that warrant for me. I want to be in there seizing items and getting
07:38myself straight back out again because of the upset and how much we have just turned that family's
07:44life around is unbelievable. Okay, is there anything you want to ask before we leave? No? No? Okay.
07:56Shall we get going? Nine seized computers and storage devices will be sent for forensic examination.
08:05It will take several months to get the results.
08:09What have we got?
08:10In the time they are allowed to hold the suspect, the team can conduct an initial search of just one laptop.
08:25All right, sir.
08:30We have the right to speak to an independent solicitor. That's free of charge
08:33and that could be in person or on the telephone.
08:35It is frightening how many people are actively involved. It starts with the actual abuse,
08:49but it goes right down to the people that are looking at it in their homes and they just think
08:55that it's not real. It's, you know, like an act, like a scene and then everybody goes home happy.
08:59They don't realize that that is actual sexual abuse they're watching, that is rape they're watching.
09:05You're part of the problem, so although you're not there, you're contributing it by wanting to see it.
09:12Some polo mints, hospital ID card.
09:18While we're waiting for you to be interviewed, I'll need to keep you in one of our detention rooms,
09:22one of the cells. Do you want a tea or coffee or anything now?
09:25Um, just M2 with a blanket then, please.
09:29Please, okay.
09:30Okay.
09:30Just follow me.
09:31No problem.
09:34Um, do you want a blanket? You should be okay if you need one.
09:39M2 is a doctor arrested for indecent images, so it's quite a sensitive job and
09:56just keeping an eye on him for the first hour.
09:57It's very embarrassing, because his world is about to fall apart.
10:10Hello.
10:11Hello.
10:12Are you all right? How are you doing, honey?
10:16A gynaecologist has been arrested on suspicion of downloading child pornography.
10:21I'm intrigued to see what story he's going to come up with. He'll come up with some excuse.
10:29And did you see, um,
10:31Yeah.
10:32If that was me, I'd be like, off you go. Not a chance.
10:38So if you came home and you found him doing it on the computer, you'd be like,
10:40get the hell out of my house.
10:41Get out. Especially because I've got my little one.
10:45But would it be in the back of your mind that he touched her up?
10:47Yeah.
10:49Would she tell you?
10:50Yeah.
10:53Definitely.
10:53That's good.
10:54Definitely.
10:58But, like, how many people, partners, stay with their partners that have been,
11:03like, even convicted?
11:05Oh, loads of them.
11:05Loads of them.
11:08It's how much you accept, I suppose, at the end of the day, where your boundaries lie.
11:14I think it's different if you have children, though, isn't it?
11:16Yeah.
11:17Because you're always going to be thinking.
11:21Well, they'll be affected as well.
11:22It's not just him.
11:24Nine times out of ten, the solicitor will advise them to say nothing.
11:44They will be advised that, okay, you've been arrested, but the police haven't actually got
11:48the physical evidence yet. They've taken, they've seized your computer, for instance.
11:52That needs to be examined. What if they don't find anything? Don't sort of admit to anything they
11:58haven't got yet. Let them prove it before you admit it.
12:04That one.
12:08And that one.
12:12Okay, the first thing I'm going to ask you is, are you responsible for the offence which
12:16you've been arrested? No comment.
12:19No comment, okay. What I'm going to do is just go through a series of questions,
12:24background questions, that you may feel you want to answer. Okay, so first of all,
12:29I'm going to ask you, you've already given me your address at the start of the event,
12:32you. Can you tell me who else lives there? My wife, D-A-I. I'll send your comments. Okay.
12:43I think this is a good point for me to go through some of the files that were downloaded, okay? So,
12:51we're going to go back to the 23rd of the 2nd, 2013, and the first title that was downloaded was
12:5812-year-old girls flashing tits and kissing each other. What can you tell me about that download?
13:06Although the police will not have conclusive proof until the computers are examined,
13:10they do have a list of file names that were downloaded from the doctor's home.
13:15You can see, obviously, I've got quite a lot here and it's my intention to go through every
13:18single one. So, I've just picked out some titles that are quite prominent and have got quite
13:24impactive names, so they might jog your memory, okay? Very young, cocaine addict,
13:30lesbian, teen sluts doing crazy things on sitcom with sound, in brackets, webcam.
13:39What can you tell me about that download? Is it something that you think that your wife
13:45could have downloaded? downloaded? No comment.
13:55Okay, that file was shared a further three times.
14:01Could it be your wife that's downloading?
14:09You keep looking at your sister. If you want to talk to us, talk to us, okay? Because this is your
14:14time. We're trying to prove or disprove your involvement. Right now, you're just saying no
14:20comment. We're getting no information from you. Yeah? So, this is your interview. This is your time
14:26to talk to us. I understand. May I have a quick word with my solicitor before we continue?
14:36Okay. Yep. Okay. Yep.
14:38I'm running a wheel. Okay. Yep.
14:45Push him down. You all right? Push him down.
14:50You've not got a T-shirt on? No.
14:52You hate a T-shirt. I don't.
14:56Oh, I'll give it a hug.
14:57What we will try and do is try and hit on things that are emotive to them.
15:14Let's look at who else is involved. Your children, your wife, your family.
15:18Yeah. Okay. This is what's going to happen if you don't talk. You know, it's going to have
15:24more effect on your family and loved ones. We're going to have to, you know, look at what they're
15:29doing and we're going to have to interview them.
15:30Because of the nature of the offences, and we're talking about offences against children,
15:41and there is a child living here, we do have a duty to safeguard . Okay? And that's what it's
15:49about. It will be some simple questions just to ensure that . Okay? All right? I'm not saying that
15:57anything's happened. Certainly not the case at all. And we certainly haven't got any evidence
16:01to suggest that that's happened.
16:06With paedophiles, we know it goes in a natural progression.
16:09If they're looking at indecent images of children, they may have already committed hands-on offences,
16:15or they may have started looking at these images and got a bit braver and thought,
16:19actually, I might try doing something myself. So there is a natural progression, generally,
16:25to get from them sitting in front of the computer to them actually physically abusing somebody.
16:30You just waking up? Yes.
16:33Need to have a drink or anything? No, you're all right.
16:37What's things like at home? There's just you, Mum and Dad, isn't there? Yeah.
16:42Lives here. Okay? And is everything okay at home? Yes. Yeah? If anything was troubling you at home,
16:50yeah? If you were worried about anything at home, who would you tell?
16:54Well, I'd tell my Mum. Tell your Mum, yeah? Is there anyone else that you could tell?
16:59I would call my Dad on the phone. Oh, wow. Do you know how to do that? Yeah.
17:04Do you? Yeah. Okay.
17:06Okay. Erm... And are you happy at home? Yes.
17:12Yeah? Okay. Okay. Erm...
17:17Is there anything else you want to tell me about?
17:20No.
17:23That makes you unhappy, maybe? No. No?
17:27No. I'd say I do the...
17:28No. No, thank you.
17:37Okay. Erm...
17:40The time on the video recording is...
17:4413.13.
17:46Er, we're still in interview room 6 at Luton Police Station.
17:49Er, you're still under caution.
17:51Can you tell me, um, where you work at the moment?
17:54OK, I'm aware that, um, you're a doctor, OK,
17:59and I think we'd agree that that is in a position of trust.
18:05Um, have you ever abused that position of trust
18:08to sexually assault children?
18:12No comment.
18:15You have a...
18:18No comment.
18:21We spoke to this morning.
18:29Have you sexually assaulted ?
18:32I mean, he's not here in relation to...
18:34I know, it is...
18:35Are you proposing to charge him with a further effect?
18:37No, I'm asking the question.
18:38Well, it's an irrelevant question, isn't it?
18:40Is he in relation to indecent images?
18:41You're using emotive subjects in order to try and provoke a reaction from him,
18:44and I'll ask you to stick to questions involving...
18:47When I'm dealing with indecent images of children,
18:50sexual abuse, I'm going to be asking my question.
18:53So I'll ask you again.
18:56Have you sexually abused ?
18:58OK, you know, I'll say to you, you're being oppressive
19:00in the nature in which you're questioning.
19:02OK, OK.
19:03And I'll ask you to stop.
19:05Have you sexually abused your child ?
19:07If it continues, then, you know, the interview will be terminated,
19:10and, you know, I might have to have a conversation with the sergeant
19:14because it's an inappropriate line of question.
19:16It's just a question that I'm asking.
19:18It's an inappropriate question.
19:19So he can ask...
19:20He can say to me if he doesn't want to answer that question.
19:23He's already answered it.
19:24No, he hasn't.
19:25He hasn't.
19:26He looked at you.
19:27So he can answer that question with no comment, yes or no, or if you...
19:31No.
19:32OK.
19:33Do you have a sexual relationship with your wife?
19:39No, I don't.
19:42I think that's all my questions at the minute I want to ask about those.
19:46So before I finish and before I move on to welfare,
19:49I just want you to, you know, take a deep breath,
19:52give yourself a few seconds to have a think about if there's anything,
19:57whether it be about the offence, about something you want to tell us.
20:02Before we finish this interview, is there anything you want to say?
20:06I've got a prepared statement.
20:07I'll read it for the benefit of the table.
20:10Yeah, of course.
20:11So it reads,
20:12OSC's from my home address belong to me.
20:14My wife has access to them but uses them for shopping, emails and Skype.
20:19I've downloaded file sharing software and accept that I have downloaded movies and box sets generally.
20:26I accept that I downloaded the files as suggested during interview.
20:31My wife is not involved in any way.
20:33I was not aware of what I was doing.
20:35That's signed and dated.
20:37Okay.
20:39The terms of the main interview are finished.
20:42I understand that today has probably been extremely stressful for you
20:47and the implications are not just with your home life but with work are huge.
20:53Okay.
20:54So I am, that concerns me.
20:57Do you have sort of much family friends that you can call on for support?
21:00No.
21:01No.
21:02Okay.
21:03But you've got your wife.
21:04Okay.
21:05And there's also, I'll also give you my details because I'm concerned about you as an individual.
21:11Okay.
21:12I've got a duty of care to you as someone who's been arrested in an offence, which is quite emotive,
21:18which can be, you know, can make you think, you know, that your whole world's collapsed.
21:23So I want you to have that support.
21:25No comment all the way to the end until prepared statements say he did it.
21:37Result.
21:38He went out, came back in.
21:40Yeah.
21:41And then a prepared statement say he's done it.
21:44What?
21:45It's not with the kids?
21:46No, he's downloaded.
21:47What are you going to say it's not with the kids?
21:50No, he's responsible for it.
21:52I was like, God, I think I've just done that the first time around.
21:54I wouldn't have to go on my cushions.
21:59That's me done.
22:00I've got a really bad headache now.
22:02I've been up since half past four.
22:08Fifteen years of training.
22:10For what?
22:11For sexual gratification.
22:12How did you...?
22:13When he needs a position of trust, they're never going to trust him again.
22:16He needs to get rid, quick.
22:20Although the doctor has accepted the accusations in interview, the police cannot remand him to prison until they can assess the illegal material.
22:29I've only got eight images.
22:47That's it.
22:48And it's deleted.
22:49It's clear then.
22:51What a day.
22:52What a bloody day.
22:53Because of the potential risk to his child, social services must set the conditions of the suspect's bail.
23:03There you go.
23:04Okay.
23:05Don't go nowhere yet.
23:06Let me just give you an update of what's going on and what's going to happen.
23:10In terms of bail, we can't let you go home tonight.
23:11Okay.
23:12You need to find somewhere else to go.
23:13Okay.
23:14Now, you've just said to me you've got no one, no friends, family you can stay with.
23:15No.
23:16I'll find a family.
23:17So, you're happy to do that.
23:18Okay.
23:19We're allowed home.
23:20We're allowed home.
23:21But it'll have to be supervised access.
23:22Yeah.
23:23You called me.
23:24No.
23:25No.
23:26No.
23:27No.
23:28No.
23:29No.
23:30No.
23:31No.
23:32No.
23:33No.
23:34No.
23:35No.
23:36No.
23:37No.
23:38No.
23:39No.
23:40No.
23:41No.
23:42No.
23:43No.
23:44No.
23:45No.
23:46No.
23:47No.
23:48Also, no.
23:49You can't sleep, so.
23:50Yeah.
23:51You're not going to stop you say f*****.
23:53We're not going to stop you from going there.
23:54You can still see you're wife can't be left alone with them.
23:57Right.
23:58Right.
23:59They're not going there and you can't sleep there, so you're just going there that might
24:02be.
24:03So that's why we're hoping to say about finding some Alberta for you to sleep.
24:08So I doubt that it's alright unless these will be all, too, good.
24:11Yeah, that's pretty much what we've done before.
24:14Yeah.
24:15As long as you've not been left alone with that f*****.
24:16Yes.
24:17And obviously your wife needs to understand that, all right, because you'll just open yourself up to further problems
24:27All right, talk to you in a minute
24:33Okay, I'll make sure that it's clear it's being processed as me. Yeah
24:43Can you make sure no one comes in here, please
24:47Okay, if you just want to stand up here, because the sergeant's going to go through the bail conditions
24:54You must not work as a doctor in any capacity or use your professional qualifications to seek employment
25:01Within the medical field or any field that deals with children
25:05You're to surrender your British passport to officers
25:09Are there any issues I can help you with?
25:13This morning, if I can't work, then what do I do?
25:15Well, you just can't work in the medical field
25:20Okay, well, this is being investigated
25:24Okay, doesn't prevent you from
25:27Doing anything else, okay?
25:31Do you have any family units here, doctor?
25:34Not at all
25:35Nothing, just your wife and your child, okay? Do you have friends here?
25:39Uh, far away
25:41Okay
25:42Hmm
25:43So far away, how far away?
25:45Not close ones either
25:47Not anyone I want to go to
25:51Okay, well
25:52Like I said, like I said earlier
25:54You can still go home in the day
25:56And you can spend some time with your wife and child
25:58Yeah, yeah, yeah
25:59Right, you're free to go
26:00Right, you're free to go
26:08Okay
26:14His whole world has crashed
26:16Massively
26:19And he hasn't made a mission, so
26:20No
26:21What an idiot
26:22What an idiot
26:23What an idiot
26:24Horrible
26:25Horrible
26:26Horrible
26:27Horrible
26:28Lay outside
26:31It's massively impacted on their life
26:33And, which is a good thing
26:35Because, especially if they pose a risk
26:37However, they are very much put into one category
26:41They are a paedophile and that's it
26:44In the 16 months that I've been on the unit
26:46I've only ever had one person say
26:48It was for sexual gratification
26:50I like children sexually
26:52The rest have steered away from that
26:55Because they don't want to be labelled with that sort of stigma
27:04If you saw him in the street, would you think he was a paedophile?
27:07Anyone's capable of that
27:09Half the time you would never know
27:11You don't know what people are doing behind closed doors
27:17Everybody's got a guilty little secret
27:28All the blinds are shut
27:30Across the country, more than 700 people have already been arrested
27:42I like windows open
27:44Intelligence has led the team to another address
27:51Hello, it's Amanda here from Bedfordshire Police
27:53Is there any chance we can come in?
27:55Yeah, we just need to talk to you
27:57Who are you here with at the minute?
27:59My wife
28:00Your wife? Okay, cool
28:01I've got a search warrant for this premises
28:04Because we've had intelligence that somebody at this address
28:08Is using file sharing software
28:11To share indecent images of children on the internet
28:14Okay
28:15You are under arrest on suspicion of making, producing and possessing indecent images of children
28:20I tell you that you do not have to say anything
28:22But it may harm your defence if you do not mention one question
28:24Something which you'll later align in court
28:26And anything you do say may be given in evidence
28:28Okay
28:29Do you understand?
28:30Okay
28:31What we're going to need you to do
28:32Obviously my colleague says we've got a search warrant
28:34So obviously we need to search the premises
28:37I need you to get dressed as well
28:39Because shortly you'll be obviously
28:40Because we need to take you to the station
28:42Okay
28:43I was just explaining to your husband
28:45We're from the online investigation team at Bedfordshire Police
28:48We've got a search warrant for this address
28:50I'm going to sit down please
28:52Come and sit down here
28:53If you want to sit down, that's fine
28:54Everything I say is pretty
28:56Sit on the couch
28:57Okay
28:58Looks like I went to jail for a long time
28:59I don't
29:00It's over there mate
29:01Okay
29:02Listen to me
29:03Do you want to come and sit down
29:05And I can have a chat with you
29:06It's alright mate
29:07You alright?
29:08It's alright
29:09Do you want to come down and have a chat with you?
29:11Okay
29:12I know it's going to take a little while to sleep again
29:13But just try and relax
29:14Before we do anything
29:15I don't want you collapsing
29:21Okay, come through
29:22Okay
29:23Okay
29:24We've got
29:26Okay
29:27Do you want me to get you a glass of water?
29:30No
29:31Are you sure?
29:32Okay
29:33Are you going to go to jail?
29:34I don't want to cover that bit
29:36I can't sort of give you too much information at the moment
29:40Because we need to start looking at computers and items
29:43And work out what we're dealing with really
29:45Or is there anything else down here?
29:48Okay
29:49Right
29:50Which is your room?
29:51This one here
29:52Okay
29:53He's in your school
29:54Yeah, I know
29:55And that's another reason we're here
29:56And he's been placed under arrest
29:57Because we know he works in a school
29:58Um, have you organized transport?
29:59Yeah, yeah, your colleague's just doing that now
30:00Okay
30:01You can sit there but obviously I can only give you a minute or two and then we need to get you dressed
30:05Okay
30:06And get your police stationed out there
30:07Okay
30:08You've gone very pale
30:09I mean if I can't, I'm going to go to jail
30:10I mean if I can't, I'm going to go to jail
30:12Okay
30:13Okay
30:14Do you need me to get you some medical advice?
30:15Okay
30:16Okay
30:17Um, have you organized transport?
30:18Yeah, yeah, your colleague's just doing that now
30:19Okay
30:20So you can sit there but obviously I can only give you a minute or two and then we need to get you dressed
30:24Okay
30:25And get you
30:26Okay
30:27You've gone very pale
30:28No, I'm not, I mean if I say I'm going to back now
30:30Okay
30:31Okay
30:32Do you need me to get you some medical assistance?
30:35No
30:36Have you got any medical conditions?
30:38No
30:39Is your heart racing?
30:41No
30:42Okay
30:43Just take a few minutes
30:52When they're behind their computers at home, they're in it for the minute that they're doing it
30:57And they're not even thinking about what repercussions it will have on their family with regards to them being on sex offenders for how many years
31:06It's just they don't even think that far down the line
31:09How are you?
31:10How are you?
31:11You all right?
31:12Jeez
31:13I'm all right, I'm all right
31:14Loving, loving life at all ways
31:15Just sit there for a second please man
31:16Living the dream, you know me
31:30Oh
31:31But start getting all this property and all that good stuff out, yeah?
31:34And I'll be with you in a minute
31:35There you know, the inspectors
31:40Hold on one sec
31:42All right, time for rest?
31:43Time for rest is 0705
31:46What's the offence?
31:48The offence is suspicion of making, possessing and distributing decent images of children
31:54All right, do you understand why you've been arrested?
31:56OK
31:57I'm going to authorise your detention, that means you're going to be staying here with us for a while
32:01At some point you'll be interviewed about this matter and there'll be an opportunity for you to give us your side of the story, all right?
32:06Have you ever been arrested before? No?
32:08OK
32:09Do you want me to get you a drink, do you want tea, coffee, water?
32:12Water, yeah
32:13Have a seat on the bench
32:15We'll see you shortly
32:16We'll just get your fingerprints and all that done
32:19And then you'll be interviewed, see what happens after that, all right?
32:22He doesn't want a solicitor or anything
32:27Hold on, hold on, hold on
32:30He was classified on the intel as a high distributor
32:35Nasty man
32:38942 files shared
32:44It's more than...
32:45So 2011 to 2014
32:48And there's a lot of stuff
32:51Five-year-olds, seven-year-olds, babies
32:58Some of these guys that I interview, I feel quite sorry for them
33:03Why?
33:04I don't know, cos I think it's an illness
33:06Are you serious?
33:08Seriously
33:09But most of them, the people that we deal with, have been abused in their time, haven't they?
33:14Yeah, yeah
33:15I just, I don't like the fact that they say, oh, it's because of this
33:21I know people have been abused and they're not committing crime
33:25It's just an excuse
33:28If you go to the nice, softly approach then
33:31I'm not very good at being back up
33:32And then when he's not talking
33:34I'll come in
33:35I'm not good at putting the pressure on
33:37Yeah, I'll come in with a hard approach then
33:40See what he says
33:42There you go
33:44Can I have the keys to get number five up, please?
33:58Yeah
33:59Erm, when I go down, is it on the left or right? I always go right the way round
34:05Right in the far corner
34:06So I'll go right?
34:07Yep
34:08Thanks
34:09To the suspects, to the paedophiles, they don't look at the face expression
34:19They don't see the innocence of that child, they don't think of anything family background of that child
34:24It is just literally an image for them to get sexual ratification
34:29So, when I interview, I'm thinking, how did you even get to that point?
34:34What makes you think that it's acceptable?
34:37Hello, you alright?
34:39Hello, you alright?
34:41Okay
34:42You ready?
34:47Come on in
34:48Or out, rather
34:57After you
34:59Are you alright for water or do you want me to get you another one?
35:01Are you sure? If you want to sit outside
35:03You were arrested today for the making and possession of indecent images of children
35:27So the first thing I want to ask you, are you responsible for this offence?
35:31I have never made images
35:35Okay
35:36I'll clarify
35:37I would like to state for the record that I have never made
35:40In terms of the law, when we say making an indecent image, I don't mean you standing in front of a camera
35:45Standing with a camera in front of somebody taking that picture
35:48That would be classified as taking indecent images, okay?
35:51When we say by making, it means you've accessed that on the internet, okay?
35:55What can you tell me about them?
35:58I've, over, well, since the internet, I've downloaded child pornographer
36:09Okay, can you give me an idea of how many files containing indecent images?
36:14Yes, probably thousands
36:15Probably thousands
36:16Whether I really look at them or not, I generally don't, I just say one
36:25I could have been clever and just deleted everything and just kept deleting, but there's no point
36:29Well, same as no point, you know, to try and hide it
36:32I wasn't trying to hide it from, obviously, the law of what I mean
36:37Well, obviously, it's hidden from my wife
36:40Which is probably indicative of, dare I say, people like me
36:45Yeah
36:50In terms of downloading, what do you download?
36:53Okay
36:55If you want to hear the life of a paedophile, let's call it what I am
37:02I officially got into it through the internet, you know
37:05You know, you download a pornography movie, you watch it and find that, yeah, I quite like it
37:14Whatever kicks in in the brain, that's for scientists to explain, I don't know
37:19Totally by mistake, whilst I was downloading, it downloaded some images of a child pornographer
37:28It was interesting
37:32From my perspective
37:36And then it becomes
37:40Almost a drug, I suppose
37:42It's a bit like smoking, taking cocaine, heroin
37:44Um
37:49And, you know, you just want to watch more, yeah
37:52It's
37:54A mindset for wanting a better word
37:56I'm not trying to defend it
37:58You know, I say, I did 22 years in the end, they're all right from wrong
38:00Hence why
38:02You know, hands up
38:06And, yeah, you
38:09Can't live in denial
38:10As much as you want people to sit here and say, you know
38:13I'm sorry for what I did
38:15Yes, I'm sorry that I downloaded it
38:17But, like most people, I'm probably sorry that I've been caught
38:23Explain to me what you look at
38:28Anything to do with child pornography, basically
38:30Do you want me to be descriptive, or do you want me...
38:33Always give me an example
38:35You know, children basically being raped, if you want to, in cold description
38:42OK
38:44That's the only way that you can be described, I'm not saying
38:46That's fine, do you get sexually aroused by looking at them?
38:49Yes
38:53What sort of ages are we looking at?
38:56Unfortunately, everything from
38:591 through to 16, 18, 20
39:02Say you're in the street, and you see a child, any age, under the age of 17
39:09Erm, are you sexually attracted to them?
39:12No
39:14Are you only sexually attracted to children when they're naked?
39:19Yes
39:21OK
39:23So, you wouldn't find any of the school children that you teach
39:27From the ages of 11 to 18?
39:29Eight
39:31You don't find any of those sexually, you don't get sexually...
39:34No
39:36When you look at my camera, you'll see hundreds of images of school
39:40Ironically, I do all the school photography for events and things like that, and gym displays
39:51OK
39:53And do you find those students at school sexually attractive?
39:56No
39:58Have you ever thought about touching a child?
40:01No
40:03Have you ever wanted to?
40:04No
40:08Do you want to ask anything?
40:11Explain to me why you like seeing children being raped?
40:15I can't
40:17I know it sounds...
40:21It's...
40:25Something in my brain that I find attractive
40:29Or, I wouldn't say attractive is possibly not the right word
40:34Exciting, stimulating, I don't know
40:37And that's from the ages of one years old?
40:39Yes
40:41You don't have to emphasise it, I totally understand
40:44So when a, let's say for example, one year old, who can't talk
40:49No
40:51Is laying there, being raped
40:53No
40:55You get a kick out of that?
40:57To be honest, I suppose I do, yeah
40:59I don't know why
41:01And, yeah, you know, please judge me
41:04I'm not here to judge
41:06No
41:07I'm here to prove or disprove that you've done this offence
41:09Yes, I have
41:10You've been open to me with regards to what we're talking about
41:14And I appreciate that
41:16All I want to know is why you would find a one year old child being raped
41:20I could break down here and start sobbing and saying other words
41:23Yeah
41:24But I honestly don't know
41:26I honestly, you know, you're asking me, I'm being totally honest
41:30I don't know, it's, you know, why, you know, if I was to turn the tables
41:35If you don't mind, you're asking my understanding
41:37Yeah
41:38You know, why do you find whatever you do sexually with your partner arousing?
41:45I don't know, I don't know why I find it
41:48I just think, to be fair, it's a little different when it's sensual
41:52Yes, it is
41:53When there's a one year old who cannot defend themselves, they're on their back, they can't talk
41:58Yeah, I totally agree
41:59They're being raped
42:00I totally agree
42:01I know it's wrong
42:03I know, I know it's wrong, I know it shouldn't, you know
42:07But, I don't know, and that is the honest truth, you know
42:13What would your wife think if she knew that you were watching children at the ages of one year old?
42:20Well, I would hope she'd leave me
42:22You know, she'd find it totally, same as you do, same as most normal people probably do, they'd find it disgusting
42:26She has no idea
42:27She has no idea
42:28She has no idea
42:31Okay, is there anything else you want to say to me before I turn the tapes off?
42:35No?
42:36I think of
42:39Yeah, I hope they are
42:40Yeah, if you find the stress is nice and noisy, so I thank you very much for that
42:45And then we'll have a chat outside
42:46Okay, so I'm turning the tapes off, it is 11.33
43:06He's just horrid
43:07I can't believe he was so open about everything
43:10Yeah, that was good though
43:13People that say, hands up, yeah, my secret's out now, I'm addicted to looking at this kind of material
43:20Those are the people that I actually think, you know, instead of a prison sentence, you need help for that
43:27And I've got more feelings towards those people of wanting to help them rather than the ones that are lying
43:33Despite his admission, it will take months of investigation to assess the full extent of the evidence and build the case
43:44It's good, bad idea
43:54Until then, the suspect is released on bail
43:57On the condition, he has no unsupervised contact with children and doesn't return to work at the school
44:06How are you feeling now?
44:12I don't know, Tom
44:14Is your wife going to be at home when we get back?
44:17Yes
44:18Yeah
44:20Is she a lady that's quite understanding?
44:24I don't know
44:25How long have you been married to her for?
44:28Er, ten years
44:32How do you think she's going to be with you?
44:35Well, hopefully initially she'll start hitting me
44:39Then she might calm down
44:42Do you talk to anybody else about this stuff?
44:45No
44:47My little dirty secret if you want to put it that way
44:50But we'll just take it one step at a time, okay?
44:53Okay, thank you
44:59You need to come into the house and speak to the only secret you want to be left on your own
45:03No
45:05If she opens the door then that's a good sign
45:08I'm sure she will
45:10I'm sure she will
45:12There you go
45:14Then we'll have to let open the door
45:16Oh, come in
45:18Okay, sure you don't want us to come in or anything?
45:23Make sure she's home
45:25Erm, I'll be in touch with you soon though, let you know what's going on
45:28Okay, so I'll give you a call
45:29Oh, there she's in
45:30Can I see you in the window?
45:38Oh, there she's in
45:39Can I see you in the window?
45:51A little thumbs up
45:52Bye
