07 January - 14 day outlook presented by Aidan McGivern

00:00Hi there, and welcome to the Met Office 14-day outlook. Plenty of weather happening during
00:05the next few days with snow, ice and frost in places. But in this forecast, I'm going
00:11to be focusing on days 6 to 14. You can find more details about the weather over the next
00:16few days, of course, on the shorter-range forecasts in our app and on our YouTube channel.
00:22The overall theme over the next few days, of course, is that it's staying cold with
00:25low pressure to the east. Another low turning up at the start of Wednesday and that's likely
00:31to bring some rain, sleet and snow to southern counties of England before it scoots away
00:34into the continent. High pressure then transits across the country in the cold air, so staying
00:39cold but mostly settled Thursday, Friday, before another low in the Atlantic introduces
00:44again milder air into the weekend and also a transient spell of rain, sleet and snow.
00:50But by the start of next week, we've got high pressure setting up to the south or southeast
00:55of the UK, milder weather across many parts of the country. And in fact, it's that high
01:01that is likely to become dominant into next week and beyond. This, for days 6 to 14, is
01:08the overwhelming consensus in terms of where the high pressure is likely to mostly sit
01:16for days 6 to 14. In other words, high pressure over the south bringing for southern parts
01:22of the UK, some frosty nights, perhaps some fog patches, mostly dry weather by day, light
01:26winds and below average or average temperatures. Further north, around the north periphery of
01:33that high, we've got a stronger breeze, that breeze coming from the west or southwest with
01:38some outbreaks of rain for the west of Scotland, for example, and milder weather for northern
01:43parts of the UK. Another scenario that's coming out in the computer model output is for that
01:49high to sit a bit further south. That would lead more widely to westerly or southwesterly
01:54winds, which would, of course, mean above average temperatures, fewer frost and fog
01:58patches in the south, but mostly dry in the south, whilst again, the more changeable,
02:04more unsettled weather would be towards the north and northwest. Overall, though, high
02:09pressure is likely to stay nearby for days 7 to 14, mostly settled, particularly in the
02:15south, with some rain towards the north and northwest and breezier conditions as well
02:21as milder weather at the same time. Of course, for the day-to-day detail, we'll keep you
