There's lots going on with the weather over the next few days, whatever your
00:03
plans are for Christmas. Please do keep up to date with the latest forecast and
00:07
warnings because there's a few of those around. Here's the bigger picture. High
00:11
pressure is kind of controlling our weather but from a distance. These
00:15
weather fronts draped across the country and plenty of isobars as well. Still
00:20
quite windy, although not as windy as when Storm Pierre crossed during Thursday
00:25
and into Friday. That weather front marks the boundary between the milder air
00:28
toppling in around the high pressure and the colder air in place across the
00:31
far northeast of Scotland, where snow showers will continue through Friday
00:34
over Shetland. And as the rain from this weather front peps up and hits that
00:39
colder air, we could well see some heavy snow through the night across the
00:42
northeast of mainland Scotland. So we have a Met Office warning in place for
00:46
that, likely to continue into Saturday morning. For the west across Scotland,
00:50
it's the rain that's likely to cause some disruption as it sets in through
00:55
the early hours and then lasts for most of Saturday. A little bit of showery rain
00:59
possible in southern Scotland over the hills of Wales. But for the bulk of
01:03
England, Wales and Northern Ireland, just a cloudy but dry and breezy night. And that
01:07
combination of cloud and breeze keeps the temperatures right up as well. Not a
01:11
cold start to Saturday morning, except in that northeastern corner where the snow
01:15
will continue to fall. Not a great day on the roads generally across Scotland
01:19
with some snow through the morning. It could really build up in a few places,
01:24
particularly on some of those higher routes. And then in the west, that rain
01:28
continuing to fall. Heavy rain as well. A lot of spray and surface water on the
01:32
roads. Not a day to be heading into the Scottish Highlands. Some of that rain
01:36
will spread into the central belt across southern Scotland and maybe parts of
01:40
northern England too. But again, for the bulk of England, Wales, bar some rain over
01:45
the Welsh mountains, it's generally dry but predominantly cloudy. Another grey
01:49
day. Some breaks in the cloud over eastern England. A hint of brightness
01:53
here. Not that there's much power in the sun at this time of year, but it could
01:56
lift the temperatures into the teens, even where it's cloudy. It is mild, 11 or
02:01
12 degrees Celsius, but perhaps feeling cooler than that with the brisk wind,
02:06
particularly with the rain and strong winds across the far northwest. That rain
02:10
though will head south during Saturday evening. It turns down for a time across
02:14
Northern Ireland. Then the rain sets in across Wales. And so here we also have a
02:18
Met Office yellow warning in place. That rain potentially causing some disruption,
02:23
a possibility of flooding as it lasts into Christmas Eve. Elsewhere, the rain
02:27
should slip away, generally turning a little bit dry, staying quite breezy and
02:30
staying very mild. Temperatures overnight into Christmas Eve may well stay in
02:37
double digits. What about Christmas Eve? Well, we've got low pressure between
02:41
Scotland and Iceland. Plenty of isobars on the charts. It's likely to stay pretty
02:45
windy, but it does start pretty mild as well. The warmer air is tucked into here.
02:50
This is a warm sect. So what happens is the low tracks to the north of Scotland.
02:55
That weather front tries to slip southwards, but it kind of ripples and
02:59
wiggles. And if anything, then pushes back further north into Christmas Day
03:03
and taking the milder air back with it. So it is a bit of a mishmash. There'll be
03:07
some rain lingering across Christmas Eve through Wales. Some gusty winds picking
03:13
up as that front tries to push south over northeast England and then across
03:17
parts of northern Scotland, close to that low. So we have warnings in place
03:21
for the winds on Christmas Eve, again, potentially causing some disruption.
03:25
Could be pretty damp through the day across South Wales and southwest England
03:29
too. It stays windy. It stays mild for most places as well. Temperatures, if it
03:33
brightens up to the east of the Pennines, could get into the teens, 13, 14
03:38
degrees possible. And even where it's cloudy, temperatures significantly above
03:42
average. It will be windy, though, on Christmas Eve across northern Scotland,
03:46
something to bear in mind if you're out on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
03:50
itself. Again, a bit of a mishmash. Rain likely in the south, some uncertainty
03:53
about how far north this rain gets. And then this rain bad hitting the colder
03:58
air across Scotland. Well, that could make for a white Christmas, mostly over
04:01
hills, but even at lower levels on Christmas Day, the potential for a few
04:05
snow flurries. Further south, though, it isn't going to be a white one for many, a
04:09
damp one, but it will be pretty mild with temperatures, again, well above
04:13
average for the time of year. But the colder air in places across Scotland, as
04:17
I said, does give the chance of some snow, at least for a time here. Plenty going on,
04:22
as I said. Even by Boxing Day, it does look a little calmer and bright. So that
04:27
might be your best bet for a Christmas walk. So do please keep up to date. The
04:31
best way to do that is to download our app, visit our website or subscribe to
