Welcome to your latest national weather update from the Met Office.
00:03
It's a mixed picture this weekend. Broadly speaking sunshine and showers
00:07
but for some there'll be heavy downpours, there'll be strong winds as well but
00:12
when the sun is out it'll still feel quite warm. Here's the reason for this
00:15
mixed weather low pressure system just churning away out to the west of Ireland
00:21
and around that it'll throw weather fronts our way. This low won't just
00:24
dominate our weather through the weekend but well into next week as well.
00:29
Let's rewind the clock however and go through the weekend with some details
00:34
starting on Friday night with these bands of rain coming into the Northwest
00:37
heavy downpours in places since big showers through the day across Wales and
00:41
southwest England staying fairly wet on the west coast of Scotland and more rain
00:47
joining in for Northern Ireland as another band of wet weather moves in
00:51
here but many central and eastern parts staying dry one or two showers across
00:55
the far northeast on Friday evening but they tend to fade away. Tending quite
00:58
windy here however and that breeze coupled with warmer air making for a
01:03
much milder night across Scotland compared to recent nights and again
01:07
further south like recent nights it will be quite warm here with temperatures in
01:10
towns and cities staying in the mid-teens in places. So not a cold start
01:15
to Saturday and for some it'll be a fine and a sunny start as well
01:20
particularly central and eastern parts of England but it will be a wet start
01:23
for much of Northern Ireland south of Scotland and not just a wet start
01:27
because where this rain lies it's going to be a very soggy day that rain
01:32
persistence and at times heavy and it could cause some problems so we do have
01:36
a Met Office yellow warning in place more on that in a second. May well see
01:40
another band of rain coming into West Wales and southwest England through the
01:43
day with the wind starting to strengthen here. Elsewhere there'll be some heavy
01:47
showers with the likelihood of a rumble of thunder or two but they're going to
01:51
be hit-and-miss so it's no guarantee that you're going to see rain across
01:54
parts of the east and certainly many parts of the south will stay dry and
01:58
fine along with the far northeast of Scotland putting a sunny spells across
02:02
the northern isles albeit with a fairly brisk wind. Let's zoom in now and talk
02:07
about that warning. Met Office yellow warning in place covering all of
02:10
Saturday we could see 30 to 40 millimetres of rain falling in just a
02:14
few hours by the end of the day and those rainfall totals across parts of
02:17
Western Scotland may tot up close to 100 millimetres of rain that kind of
02:21
rainfall could cause a few issues certainly a lot of spray and surface
02:25
water on the roads if you're traveling in this part of the world during
02:28
Saturday just bear that in mind allow a bit of extra time for your journey. Stuck
02:32
under that rain band it'll struggle to get a much above 16, 17, 18 degrees but
02:38
it is quite warm and humid air so still feeling quite sticking in the sunny
02:42
spells across eastern areas of England temperatures again getting into the mid
02:46
or even high 20s in places feeling cooler with that brisk wind across the
02:50
far northeast. During Saturday evening we'll see further pulses of rain coming
02:55
up from the southwest and spreading across Scotland as well could turn quite
03:00
heavy this rain as we head into Sunday once more for Northern Ireland's but it
03:04
should clear through during Sunday so a bit brighter come Sunday afternoon same
03:09
goes for Wales brightening up here through the day further outbreaks of
03:12
rain likely across much of Scotland although again the Northern Isles likely
03:16
to stay dry with sunny spells and again of course eastern parts of England
03:20
showers here few and far between could see some heavy ones certainly late in
03:24
the day but most of the day will be dry and of course it's these eastern areas
03:28
where we haven't seen much rain through the summer we could do with a downpour
03:32
or two. The breeze again noticeable across the southwest and across the far
03:36
northeast again temperatures generally a little bit above average particularly
03:40
where we see some sunshine we'll see temperatures maybe getting into the mid
03:44
20s say across East Anglia. So as I said plenty going on as we go through this
03:49
weekend keep up to date with the latest forecasts those warnings are on the app
03:54
and of course on our website and even into next week more heavy downpours to
03:59
come so make sure you're following us right across social media.
