The heatwave continues this weekend but with an increasing chance of seeing
00:05
some thunderstorms. We do have a Met Office yellow warning in place for
00:09
Saturday afternoon and into the evening. Let's get on to that in a moment. Here's
00:13
the bigger picture as has been the case for most of the week. High pressure
00:16
sitting to the north and east of the UK, low pressure down to the southwest and
00:21
that's been allowing the air to waft up from the south hence why we've seen such
00:25
a hot week but signs of a change. Later in the weekend a cold front tries to
00:30
dribble into the northwest and that's where the cooler air is in place that
00:34
will eventually move across the country but it's going to take its time. So while
00:39
things are cooling off in the northwest this weekend the heat will persist
00:43
further south. Let's get back to Friday evening because some mist and low cloud
00:48
may just lap on shore once more on some of these North Sea coasts but actually
00:51
later in the night that should tend to move away again. A bit misty around some
00:55
coasts further west and there is the possibility of one or two thunderstorms
01:00
in western areas as well but they'll be pretty isolated. Most places staying dry
01:04
and fine and it's going to be another tricky night for sleeping. Another balmy
01:09
evening leading to a sticky and humid night with temperatures holding up in
01:13
the high teens in most urban areas. Some spots may not drop below 20 Celsius. So a
01:18
very warm start to Saturday and for most it's going to be a day of hot hazy
01:23
sunshine but there is as I said an increasing chance of seeing some
01:27
showers. Pretty isolated early on we'll see increasing cloud in the northwest
01:31
and certainly here a cooler feel. Parts of the highlands could be 8, 9 maybe 10
01:36
degrees lower on Saturday compared to Friday. Further south in the heat we are
01:41
likely to trigger some scattered showers. Now these could turn into pretty big
01:46
thunderstorms. They're going to be very hit and miss, pretty isolated but where
01:50
they do occur they could drop a lot of rain in a short space of time and
01:54
generate large hailstones and lots of lightning. But I must stress many places
01:58
won't see these downpours at all and in the heat temperatures getting into the
02:02
30s again and the London area could get up to 33 degrees Celsius. But it is
02:08
turning cooler across the northwest with more cloud here and that weather front
02:12
approaching. So as I said parts of the northwest highlands easily 8, 9, 10
02:17
degrees lower than Friday. Increasing chance of those thundery showers then
02:21
through the afternoon and into the evening. This large area not everywhere
02:25
in that warning zone we'll see the thunderstorms but that's the area most
02:29
at risk and as I said where they do occur they could cause some disruption.
02:33
Certainly a lot of spray surface water on the roads as well as the potential
02:36
for the large hailstones and lightning. So just something to be aware of as we go
02:41
through Saturday evening. As we go through the rest of the night we could
02:45
start to see some thundery showers coming up from France as well so that's
02:48
another area we need to watch and there's that weather front across the
02:52
far northwest bringing cloud and outbreaks of rain here. It will also
02:55
introduce cooler conditions across the far north but for many again another
02:59
very warm and humid night and again some parts of the south may not drop much
03:03
below 20 Celsius. Sunday is again a day of watching the skies and seeing if we
03:09
see some thunderstorms develop. A greater risk perhaps across parts of the
03:12
Midlands, Northern England, Wales and maybe southern Scotland as well. In this
03:16
zone perhaps more heavy thundery showers breaking out. Still a potential for more
03:20
to come up from France across the south but again the vast majority won't see
03:25
these thunderstorms and just stay dry with hot hazy sunshine. Although it is
03:30
turning cooler across the northwest and parts of Northern Ireland seeing
03:34
temperatures dipping a little on Sunday still for the bulk of England and Wales
03:36
temperatures well above average and in the east if we see lengthy spells of
03:40
sunshine again over 30 degrees Celsius likely. We will finally start to see the
03:46
cooler air pushing south as we go through Monday and into Tuesday but some
03:50
uncertainty about exactly when the heat will finally clear from the southeastern
03:54
corner. For more updates on that stay tuned throughout the weekend and please
03:57
do keep up to date with the Met Office weather warnings through our app and
04:01
website.
