00:01We are in tough economic times, and in this climate you need to stand out from the crowd.
00:08From across the country, 16 of Britain's brightest business prospects have come to London.
00:15I'm not interested in any steady eddies or cautious carols. I'm looking for someone who's exceptional.
00:23They're here to compete for a job with a six-figure salary, working for Britain's most belligerent boss.
00:30Where's all your brains, then? You, purported as useless. You, purported as doing naffle.
00:37Serial entrepreneur and multi-millionaire, Lord Sugar is once again on the hunt for an apprentice.
00:44Some of the stuff I've heard coming out your mouth is a lot of hot air, so in the interest of climate change, I don't want to hear any more crap.
00:50Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:52To land their dream job.
00:54Time is ticking.
00:55The candidates need to work as teams.
00:58I thought that you would have known how to nail this.
01:01I think that's a bit unfair.
01:02No, I'm not being unfair.
01:03I cannot work with them anymore. I can't do it.
01:05But shine as individuals.
01:07Do you like this dress?
01:09Oh, this is a dumbass thing.
01:11It's absolutely outrageous.
01:12Because in the end, there's just one job.
01:15You're fired. You're fired.
01:17Bunch of bloody amateurs. You are fired.
01:23Outro
01:26sunset
01:28Previously on the apprentice.
01:31Your task today is to create a new brand of household cleaner.
01:36Marketing man, Alex, took the lead.
01:38How would you explain our product in just a few words?
01:41Back in Chris's vision.
01:42Looks like you need the Germinator.
01:46Oh, no, it's the Germinator.
01:49On the other team, Christopher got a grip.
01:52Eight arms are better than two will be the strap line.
01:55And was seduced by OctiClean.
01:57Wow, that was quick.
01:59Pretend it's Brad Pitt you sat next to.
02:02Both teams pitched to industry experts.
02:06Eight hands are definitely better than two.
02:08Just to be clear on whether you're selling marital harmony
02:11or a cleaning product.
02:13Move over, big guys!
02:15Wow!
02:16Like E. coli and Influenza, this brand is going viral.
02:20And in the boardroom, Christopher squeaked home.
02:23I wouldn't say you've won.
02:25Technically, you haven't lost.
02:27Sandish was taken to the cleaners.
02:30Don't get carried away.
02:31Because you've got a good pitch,
02:33you were still not doing much at all.
02:35And some of the shine came off Chris.
02:37This task, it's an example of someone
02:40getting a little bit too cocky.
02:42But it was Alex who was terminated.
02:45In what you do for a day job, it's gone wrong.
02:49To become the sixth casualty of the boardroom.
02:52You're fired.
02:53Nice to meet you, Lord Sugar.
02:54Thank you very much indeed.
02:57Now nine remain to fight for the chance
02:59to become The Apprentice.
03:02Six a.m.
03:15Hello?
03:15Hello, this is Lord Sugar's office calling.
03:20Lord Sugar would like you to meet him at Pinewood Studios.
03:23The cars will be there in 30 minutes.
03:25Half an hour at Pinewood Studios.
03:26Half an hour at Pinewood Studios.
03:27I have absolutely no idea what Pinewood is, eh?
03:28Pinewood Studios is a...
03:29I'm sure it's a furniture store.
03:30Do you think we're making furniture?
03:31No idea.
03:32How many tasks have you got, Chris?
03:33Two.
03:34This looked great.
03:35I spent a whole time in the boardroom to unload sugar, this one.
03:37Ha ha ha.
03:38Did you see that?
03:39I was going to W intravenous.
03:40And you don't want to collect some food?
03:41You know, these were motions and things.
03:43How many tasks have you got, Chris?
03:45I've got two.
03:46That's all right.
03:47Right there.
03:48Chef.
03:49Meow.
03:50Wow!
03:51Oh my god, that's all right.
03:52Yeah.
03:53So, I'm doing some stuff.
03:54Yeah.
03:55How many tasks have you got, Chris?
03:57How many tasks have you got?
03:58Yeah, guys.
03:5920 miles outside london britain's dream factory pinewood film studios
04:21look over there 007 oh yeah this must be quite like a famous studio or something
04:27dominating the backlot the huge blue screen used for adding digital backgrounds to blockbuster movies
04:57good morning good morning lord sugar welcome to the home of british filmmaking some of the
05:14countries most successful films like harry potter and james bond have been made here
05:20now that is the biggest blue screen in europe you could put someone in front of that screen
05:27and transform them to anywhere in the world and your task is to sell the big screen experience
05:34to the general public i'm giving you a stand and all the equipment you need at london's biggest
05:41shopping center westfield and you're going to need to attract customers to your stand film them in front
05:48of your movie screen so that they can see themselves flying to the moon sailing a boat flying an airplane
05:56whatever you choose is your backdrop then sell them a dvd of their own movie experience right i'm going
06:05to mix the teams up a little bit the sandish and chris are going to go over to synergy and stella and
06:11joanna you're going to go over to apollo
06:15stuart your opportunity is here because you're going to be the team leader thank you and sandish
06:23you're going to be team leader for this team okay off you go and i'll see you back in the boardroom
06:29in a few days time from lord sugar an emerging market to tap into selling the general public
06:41the chance to star in their own movie should we watch the dvd get that out of the way it might give
06:46us some ideas tomorrow the teams will need to charm customers into performing on camera look how
06:53excited he is he loves that against all action backgrounds yeah and then sell them keepsake dvds
07:08first from an archive of action scenes the teams can pick two ready-made backgrounds
07:15see this would be good you can scream on it yeah i love roller coasters and you can get the kid going
07:20the sleeves would just be playing as a backdrop and you'd be in front of that yeah is there any
07:26point in us wasting time here and we can watch this is new to me so i need to calm down and i've
07:31seen i've seen these a million times before i appreciate that it's a blue screen and it's
07:35somebody sat in front of a live background and that's him reacting to it i i personally am not
07:39going to glean anything from this fired up and in the director's chair could i reserve some archive
07:45footage please telecom's entrepreneur stewart right can we take a vote on it guys hands up for water
07:52skiing hands up for water laura hands up for water skiing yes or no yes that's half up yes or no
07:59okay i think please chase you think please say that okay i'm saying please please the only place i
08:04fit within a team naturally is the leader yeah i'll work in the ranks if i have to but only to get to the
08:10top i don't sit anywhere but the top i think we made really good decisions there under actually quite a
08:14lot of pressure if we can book aquarium first if everyone likes that one look at this guys you're
08:24ignoring this as well calling the shots for the other team recruitment consultant sandish when lord
08:31sugar said to me you know i don't know whether you just do naff all you know those words resonated with
08:36me and annoyed me because i don't agree at all is everyone happy with book an aquarium so i don't
08:44know i said i i when i'm project manager if i leave my team to a win hopefully that'll prove you wrong
08:50and that's what i'm aiming with this one show hands for motorbike i'm with motorbike yeah so go on then
08:55chris get that booked backgrounds from the archive agreed the teams must now think up and shoot one of
09:05their own there's going to be a very busy shopping center tomorrow there's going to be lots of
09:09families there i can't imagine me and my wife going oh let's do a video together but parents with kids
09:14and experience for the kids so i'm thinking ski slopes girls and boys will love skiing and more
09:21importantly it's dressing up yeah yeah everyone happy with that yeah i've got a vision in my head and
09:26how i want the ski video to look like because what happens you're you're on the button lift and you can see
09:30the pole and the wire and it's dragging you up and there's snow all around you if possible camera
09:35you're going and so three four seconds of that all the way around and ski down
09:41while sandisha's team targets kids stewart is pushing for grown-ups okay i think that westfield
09:48it's affluent people maybe sort of 20 to 30 somethings and my personal opinion is that motor
09:52racing fits the entire demographic so we're going to aim for the adults yeah because it's it's
09:57aspirational it's something that people can't necessarily attain easily i like the fair the
10:02reason being i just think it's easy and people enjoy being at the fair you know adults and children can
10:08go on it and we're limiting it down to children really still you've been a bit quiet what do you
10:11think well there are other things that need to be considered before making decisions we've done that
10:16i just want to know your opinion does anybody have anything or do they agree or disagree because
10:20everyone's being really woolly here
10:22is anybody not happy with motor racing speak now or forever hold your peace
10:29right i'm gonna book it then you've got to be true to yourself in these tasks the call needed to be
10:34made and that's what a good pm is stewart's leadership style leaves me trembling with irritation all right
10:41guys listen i'm really happy with how it's gone this morning it's been a bit hectic but every decision
10:45has panned out to be right who does he think he is
10:5311am the teams divide half to shoot their background action half to a crash course in special effects
11:05so this is our background screen normally it would be blue or green and the way we're going to make
11:10it green is to put this ring of leds on the lens of the camera this is incredibly interactive so the
11:16really important thing is to show the audience that you are enjoying what you're doing this is
11:21great fun and that's what's going to make it good for you to sell the product okay we've got some
11:25demonstration backgrounds for you to play with record and play that's it arms up come on
11:33one bring them together that's it side to side oh yeah that's it shake them hips come on wiggle around
11:40a bit more oh yeah that's it get that jangling going we need a bit more wiggle chris i think
11:46you've got to shake all the way what about the light bulb very good very good you're a natural chris
11:53so i could move okay as soon as you finish press stop on your recorder avin just can i buy my bollywood
11:59movie now how many customers do you realistically think you can process per hour doing this sort
12:06of thing this process is going to take 15 to 20 minutes for each of the filmings
12:12so only realistically three maximum four per hour okay
12:20brands hatch legendary formula one race track
12:23here to film their car racing backdrop project manager stuart with laura
12:33what we're trying to film is uh sort of an experience uh stuart's much more knowledgeable
12:37in this than me but we wanted to know which cars you got the formula ford or something what's
12:42no it's the m3 we've only got the m3 solution today yes i've got one of those
12:47uh no oh okay i suppose it's worth asking if i can drive isn't it
12:57really i've got a csl honestly i have to rein in my own extreme masculinity in this task i
13:04absolutely live adrenaline and for me if my heart's not racing there's no point in being alive i mean
13:09why be boring that's for everyone else to do i'm only here on this planet for a certain number of years
13:14i'm going to make sure that every single day of my life is jam-packed with fun i'm going to drive
13:18it off yeah okay so let's go and get druid's bend from a panning shot yeah and as i come back
13:23readjust the camera and wave the chequered flag yeah all right you're going to be i'm guessing
13:29waving it there just don't stand in the way otherwise you'll get 50 grand's worth of sports car
13:33okay in you have fun
13:36yeah okay ready 100 while stewart brings his adrenaline-fuelled movie to life
13:54the other half of his team joe and stella have to work out how to market it we don't have a
14:01a clear theme that's the bit that i'm struggling with ride of your life or you know it's not really
14:08ride of your life do you know what i mean yeah i said you fancy the ride of your life
14:15i don't think that that would come the fuck very well would it stella
14:18do you want to call him or yeah i do yeah
14:36i can't talk right now because i've got to just wait stewart's actually driving
14:55so sorry about this we're trying as hard as we can is he taking the piss
14:59on the other team christopher and jamie hit the snowy slopes of milton keynes i was thinking more
15:14south of france than south milton keynes myself we're creating a video like a simulator i suppose
15:22for children so we need to set the scene for them so it's like click click let's go and we want them to
15:29be oh you know let's just get our ski legs and and start moving that's pretty cool he's a handsome
15:50chap the problem is we it's a bit sort of like adulty orientated at the minute but just to make
15:56a bit more funks absolutely absolutely i've never escaped with a penguin outfit on before
16:16i had the vision and i've been basically making the scene interesting
16:21so it's you know visually for kids it's fantastic you know really really really good fun
16:37fun over that's a wrap stewart performs a u-turn hi stella
16:43we've got loads to talk about we've had a think actually are probably almost all of our customers
16:48are actually going to be kids i think the kids are the ones that are going to bring us this task
16:53to victory and i think if we focus on adults they're actually going to rather spend their
16:56money going out drinking as opposed to spending it on a you know cheesy dvd so i think that's a really
17:01good call on on everyone's part there we have wasted so much time today what did i say at the
17:07brainstorming yeah i think that's really good actually i feel so much more confident now we're
17:11all on the same song sheet we're all going to the kids market to be honest i don't think there's
17:15any point even calling the guy anymore i think we just really need to make the decisions it's that's
17:20how i feel 5 p.m to put customers into character the teams need props definitely get wobbly hats poles
17:33gloves any gloves anything that would show from maybe the knees upwards yeah what about some sweets
17:41for the kiddies yeah that's a good idea after stewart's swerve towards children a toy shop for
17:48stella and joe stella this is awesome the ferrari isn't it the boys would absolutely love this that's
17:56the car scene done thank you very much yeah where's stewart he is at brand touch what's he been doing all
18:07day he's been racing racing what um i don't know actually he hasn't actually told us exactly what he's been
18:14doing last job invest in the raw materials for tomorrow's sales push what they spend now will be
18:25deducted from their final earnings in terms of actual number of dvds we've got 11 hours and you can do a
18:33maximum of eight per hour if we're at full capacity right so the maximum dvds we can actually burn is 88
18:39yeah we do need a bit of wastage but i reckon 100 would cover if it makes a five is worth the difference
18:46you'd rather have that i'd rather have the extra to have too much then to not be able to fulfill demand
18:54how many dvds are we going to buy now then 50 dvds so that's 25 pounds okay hang on let me just
19:01i'm just thinking actually um get 30 so i'd say buy 30 dvds thanks bye bye bye come on then i'm just
19:14going to use my uh psychic instinct here and predict what they are now saying and it's going to be word
19:18for word he can't make a decision i don't know he makes a decision then he changes it and what they
19:24actually mean to say is i can't make a decision i need everything spoon fed to me where's the spoon give me
19:30some spoon back at the house the vision i had has kind of come out on the cd so let's pop it on see
19:38what you think movie time oh i like that watch it's jamie
19:53oh well done all right guys guys guys can i finish this um speaking of tomorrow and sort of
19:59strategy and jobs the way i see it chris liz at the front helping sell out there like you know
20:08enticing the children right we are going to show you chris how to run everything from the back room
20:15and how to burn the dvds and i need somebody to run in between front and back so i know that will be you
20:22jamie really what do you think i think i'll be wasted my neck is online i'm project manager right
20:29now and i need to be in the front all the time so i just your head of sales basically yeah this is the
20:36way that i see it best you actually look like you just see the ghost i'm just telling you you're
20:47a ghost like this you wanted someone to pay 15 pounds to put the child on this and you think this
20:52would be a good memory to have seriously let's just lay all the cards on the table if you look at it from
20:59a logical point of view come on we're not stupid let's just think you'd be happy charging someone 15
21:04pound for that let's watch let's watch this but the funny thing is it's not my responsibility no
21:11i'll pause it then you've got something to say pause it so let let me just get this clear then
21:16let's get something clear on this dvd because that's that's how i felt all day to be honest
21:21i've needed to get things clear yeah because no i'll tell you why because i've got where i am
21:26being impulsive because i'm an entrepreneur so i make decisions based on judgments and the reason
21:30why i'm successful is because i make those judgments correctly whereas other people who don't
21:35generally are unsuccessful so if you probably can't share my vision any other issues niggling things
21:50saturday 6am
21:51location westfield europe's biggest urban retail complex potential customers up to 100 000
22:05guys the whole screen needs to be shifted over yeah that's all we're running on the shop floor the teams
22:11get prime sites that's it upstairs back rooms to burn dvds okay well i've made the decision joe is on
22:24the selling floor i've made the decision that stella is staying in the back office now laura
22:30where would you like to go my my strengths do not lie in technology they would lie in sales so if you go
22:35if you go on the front line then our sales are entirely dependent on you and uh joe it's your
22:40course i've told you i'm happy you understand without a shadow of a doubt that if you go out
22:44there under the sales force and we lose this task because of insufficient sales that you and joanna
22:48will bear the brunt of that if you're fully aware of that then i'm more than happy to give you the
22:54opportunity to sell okay are you happy with that i'm i'm really happy doing that okay okay all right
23:00guys that's fine if somebody says where they want to be within reason i'll put them there because if they
23:04they cock up they've got nobody else to blame because i don't want anybody ass covering i hate
23:09that as a practice no ass covering clearly defined roles happy days 10 a.m 10 hours to turn shoppers
23:21into stars and make lots of money what do you think of the car do you want to come and have a ride
23:30what you can do we put a background on on there so it's like they're driving around a racing car
23:35circuit it's ten pound it takes three minutes and you're getting something that you can take
23:39home show your family and it's something that the kids will remember as well what do you think boys
23:43you like the car ready and you really have to steer around the corners he's going to catch you up
23:51well done toy car center stage you have to swerve the other way that's it it's catching up it's
23:59catching up stuart's sales team starts to pull in the crowds abigail are you driving the car abigail are you
24:08driving so we should have that ready for you in about an hour's time and so if you just come
24:20down down here and collect it and just give this receipt to somebody
24:25with the movie on tape brilliant two tapes two orders it's off to the back room to be burned onto dvd
24:32i'm keeping this now so that i can advise your production times okay stuart takes charge of quality
24:42control poor little kid looks so confused while stella tracks orders notes you know it's just you are
24:53completely the opposite to me i remember everything in my head and you write everything down i find it
25:00interesting it's good to get a different perspective on things actually well although my bosses have
25:05been drumming into me for years to write things down on sandisha's team
25:18the shopping mall has opened it's quite busy but there's nobody at the stall and the reason there's
25:22nobody at the stall is they're busy training the other team who didn't go on the workshop how to use the
25:29equipment where is the logic in that this is why i employed you for this job chris military precision
25:40hi sandish obviously that now it's time to start selling we're literally coming downstairs right now
25:48we've just had to show chris how to use the computer sandish if someone who knew how to use the technology
25:54was using the technology you wouldn't have had to take half an hour to show chris how to use the technology
25:58look that doesn't really matter at this point jamie i'm coming downstairs i'm going to start selling
26:03all right yeah it matters when there's kids walking past potential sales okay we're coming down now
26:08trying to raise points for no flipping reason
26:1150 minutes late i'm going to have a notice you're looking at our dvd experience and you're right it is
26:18that damn good sandisha's team finally opens for business if you pop around there you'll be able
26:24to see what we're doing on the screen but selling downhill ski movies are you interested in being in our
26:30movie no is proving to be an uphill struggle how about your minute of your time we're doing an interactive dvd
26:39no we're good thanks okay nobody's buying it
26:44it's all about taking the most amount of money in this task and if the sales people aren't selling then
26:51we ain't gonna win jamie you're not gonna be standing here selling right now later the strategy
26:57might change okay right now you're just running back and forth okay okay no i'm just i'm just uh i feel
27:05like a bit of a spare part every single task i've been the best performer in sales james
27:13other people have been really good sellers too yeah i know but i just saw a bit of a spare part
27:17but someone's got to do this job so i've given it to you that's that's just what what i'm deciding
27:23you've got it you've got it
27:24it's 11.99 and it's good fun as well for them we dress them up and they can uh enjoy the experience
27:37look at you driving the car like a big boy on stewart stand customers come back to check their dvds
27:45before parting with their cash thank you very much it was great the sales force is performing
27:53very well notably joanna a mother who knows how to talk to children you want but you're a proper
27:59proud and they're giving little medals to the kids if they beat the car well of course every child
28:05beats the car because it's a it's a fixed dvd and the kids love their medals they go off showing them
28:11all oh look he's won the race well done that's a brilliant turn okay guys guys have you got a queue
28:2015 quid up the price right yeah dad are we happy with that are we having really in that
28:26thanks very much it's 15 pounds each for the dvds i'm afraid yeah sorry it's 30 pounds apologies
28:32unfortunately we don't have it we can't change the prices downstairs i'd love to sell it you for 10
28:35but i saw the bits in paper it was 10. we would change the prices but you know our manager said
28:40it's 15 so okay i'm sorry if you saw that written somewhere it's all written on the receipts
28:50okay no all right then yeah if someone told you 10 we'll keep with that thank you
28:56i think we should have pushed it he'd have paid you can't do that you know it
29:00we're reflecting badly you can't rip people up next time i'm not gonna we need to this is like
29:05this is the revenue thing he would have paid it he was a bit pissed off but not that much
29:122 p.m sandisha's dvd production room honestly i'm gonna go mud by the end of the day unless we get
29:20busy i mean i'm sort of stepping back looking how the stand is being run and they're all there in
29:26suits i said you all look far too corporate surely they should know that's big enough and old enough
29:31to know sandish we've had eight customers i really really think you need to get into some kind of
29:38costume all of you suits for me from an external point of view to be honest i don't actually think
29:44it is the costumes is the reason why i'm not selling them it's the price which is the reason

34:43You can go through to the boardroom now.
35:10Good afternoon.
35:12Well, very interesting task.
35:15Some creativity, a lot of technical facets also.
35:19So, Stuart, you were appointed by me as Apollo's team leader.
35:22I was.
35:23How was your team leader then, ladies?
35:26Is there something down on the floor there, Joanna?
35:30There was no structure.
35:31I just think maybe you could have gave us as a team a bit more direction.
35:35Great.
35:36Any more feedback, guys?
35:37Stella?
35:38Sorry.
35:39I'll ask the questions.
35:40Is that okay?
35:42Thank you so much.
35:43It's very kind of you.
35:44Who's gone off to make the film?
35:46So me and Laura went off to the racetrack to make the film.
35:48Okay.
35:49I drove one of the cars round.
35:50Trying to have a treat before you've even won the task.
35:53It was a hard job.
35:54It needed to be done.
35:56How did you define your selling prices?
35:58We started the day selling for £10 a DVD, but very quickly up that to £15.
36:03The only slight pricing issue was people that had obviously seen the price at the start
36:07of the day and come back at the end and said, well, it was £10 earlier.
36:10Sounds like a bunch of flyboys.
36:11Oh, no.
36:12When a couple of people did say that, we did as a gesture of goodwill offer them for £10.
36:15A gesture of goodwill?
36:16It was something that needed to be done.
36:18I wouldn't call that goodwill.
36:19I'll call that being caught out.
36:21How about you, Stella, up in the back room?
36:25Did you feel that that was a good place for you to be?
36:28Yeah, I think it's a very good job that I was there because at least somebody knew what
36:32they were actually doing, and I think it would have been quite disastrous had I not been there.
36:36Why's that?
36:37Well, basically, he said he's an entrepreneur with a mind that is such he doesn't need to
36:42write things down, and my taking note of all the costs and things was a complete waste
36:46of time, and I found it very, very taxing.
36:49Stella is 31.
36:51She's a lot older than me.
36:52I'm 30, actually.
36:53Not that that's got anything to do with it.
36:54Sorry, I think that she found it incredibly difficult to take direction from somebody
36:58ten years younger than herself.
36:59They can't offer direction.
37:00Stella's very corporate.
37:01She likes to write everything down, take meticulous notes, and I do all that in my head.
37:06Let me ask you something.
37:07If he was working for me, and you've got all this stuff in your head, and I'm relying
37:13and trusting upon you, and unfortunately you got run over by a number six bus, where does
37:18that leave me?
37:19Yeah.
37:20Now, let's move on to the other team synergy.
37:24Sandish, I made you the team leader.
37:26Yeah.
37:27So, how was your team leader?
37:29Looks good.
37:30Yeah, yeah.
37:31Okay.
37:32That's what I call a fair nod, that is.
37:34Yeah.
37:35Well, basically, because Jamie and Chris were quite keen on the skiing, and they said they
37:40were good skiers, I sent them off to film the skiing.
37:43I champion skiing purely because I just wanted something a bit more exotic, you know.
37:49You wanted.
37:50Well, that was my thought process behind it, and why I sort of champion skiing.
37:56Right.
37:57On day two, who did you decide was going to be front of house, and who was going to be
38:01in the back room?
38:02Well, the way I decided that was that I've worked with Liz and Chris before, and I think
38:07they're really strong sellers, and interact with kids very well.
38:11I thought Chris Farrell would be good in back of house, organised, and spot on, and I sort
38:18of led Jamie to be liaison between front and back of house.
38:21Do you not think that was a bit flawed, in the sense that you, Chris, and Liz, the three
38:26of you, were trained technically, and then flipping that at the last moment, and then these
38:31people would be clueless as to how to execute?
38:34I didn't think of it that way, because it was pretty simple.
38:37I thought we could relay that in five minutes.
38:39With the exception that you opened late, because you had to explain to Chris how to
38:43use the technology, so you could start selling at ten, but in fact, you couldn't get going
38:48until eleven.
38:50And then, Jamie, you're kind of hovering between the back room and the front of house.
38:55Was you happy taking on that task?
38:57Initially, I wasn't, because a courier I'd absolutely wasted on, but actually, it turned
39:03out to be probably the most crucial role, because I saw exactly what was going on with
39:08the three salespeople, and I could give excellent feedback to whoever needed it.
39:15OK.
39:17Let's get down to the financial side of things.
39:21Nick, perhaps you'll start me off with Apollo's sales, yeah?
39:26Yep.
39:27Apollo's sales came in at £347.50, but they spent £85, which generated a profit of £262.50.
39:38OK.
39:39And, Karen, how did Synergy sales go?
39:43Synergy sales, £372.97.
39:49Costs, £150.
39:52Profit, £222.97.
39:55Ah-ha.
39:56Well, Stuart, your team won.
39:57I'm so proud of everyone.
39:58Well done.
39:59I've laid on a masterclass of champagne tasting at one of London's oldest champagne bars.
40:12Wow.
40:13Are you old enough to drink?
40:15I'm not sure, yeah.
40:16Legal almost everywhere.
40:17OK.
40:19So, have a good time, and I'll see you on the next task.
40:21I'll keep some of my lines for you guys.
40:22Sorry.
40:34Well, you lost by £39.00.
40:40Mm-hmm.
40:41I'll see you back in this boardroom here where at least one of you will be leaving the process.
40:47Off you go.
40:57I'm used to drinking a pint.
40:59Do we spit or swallow then?
41:00I think that's the question.
41:01We're spitting, sniffing, all the things your mother told you not to do.
41:04Sniffing.
41:05It smells like antifreeze, for honest.
41:08Rates.
41:09And...
41:10Oh!
41:11Oh!
41:12Oh!
41:13Oh!
41:14Vintage champagne, been matured for five years.
41:18Very creamy, erm...
41:19Sorry.
41:20No.
41:21No.
41:22It literally is like drinking paint stripper.
41:23Have you ever had champagne before?
41:24Yeah, it's what you get when you come into a nightclub, they give it to you free, don't
41:28they?
41:29We hate it because it's more mature.
41:30I think it's an acquired taste.
41:31Yes.
41:32You prefer the...
41:33The young, fresh.
41:34The champagne tassinger.
41:35Yeah.
41:36Like yourself, Stuart, young and fresh.
41:38Young and fresh.
41:39Yeah.
41:40You don't like mature, complex characters, do you?
41:42No, exactly.
41:43Well, listen guys, you might not have agreed all day, but I think you'll say that we had
41:48a sparkling victory.
41:49Yes.
41:50Cheers guys.
41:51Cheers.
41:59Back off this side.
42:01Zero errors.
42:02I counted 57 and it was 57 sales.
42:05So this is flawless, this ends.
42:08I think Jamie to some extent has something to answer for because in the morning it was
42:12rather negative.
42:13You know, sometimes negativity can slow things down.
42:15Threw my life and soul into that, that day's work.
42:19So it just, it really hurts and just gutted, absolutely gutted.
42:24Yeah.
42:25Yeah.
42:27I took good strategic decisions to do with things like prices and where people go, that
42:32kind of thing, but we've lost and someone's going to have to go home.
42:45Hello?
42:46Yeah.
42:47Could you send them in please?
42:48Yes, I want you to know.
42:49You can go through to the boardroom now.
42:52So.
42:53Yeah.
42:54Yeah.
42:55Could you send them in please?
42:56Yes, I want you to know.
42:57You can go through to the boardroom now.
42:59So.
43:00Sandish, do you think you ran the team well enough?
43:04Erm, I think the positions I put everybody in were good positions and I think my strategy
43:20behind that was, was good.
43:21You're in the recruitment business, so putting people into good roles should come natural to
43:25you.
43:26Yeah.
43:27Yeah?
43:28Yeah.
43:29And you still feel that having gone off the three of you to do the technical work, then flipping
43:31that at the last moment was a great thing.
43:32Yeah.
43:33Yeah.
43:34Yeah.
43:35Yeah.
43:36Yeah.
43:37Yeah.
43:38Yeah.
43:39Yeah.
43:40Yeah.
43:41Yeah.
43:42Yeah.
43:43Yeah.
43:44Yeah.
43:45Yeah.
43:46Yeah.
43:47Yeah.
43:48And flipping that at the last moment was, was a good idea.
43:51I do stand by that decision.
43:53It didn't take long for us to explain to Chris how to run the technology.
43:58The bottom line is you didn't kick off till 11 o'clock.
44:01Yeah.
44:02Right?
44:03Okay.
44:04And then you lost by 39 pounds.
44:05If you'd have got off to a flying start, you most probably would have sailed home.
44:11Erm, you spent 35 pounds more than the other team on DVDs.
44:15Mm-hmm.
44:16Um, you spent 20 pound more on marketing posters and all that stuff.
44:20Yeah.
44:21So, who was working on the costs?
44:23Erm, I'd say Liz really pretty much took a hand on the cost really.
44:26I wouldn't say I was in charge of the costings.
44:28I mean, it was a team decision.
44:29All pricing costs were team decisions.
44:30I was just the one keeping a note of all the figures and doing the figures.
44:33Okay, well, let me ask you another question then because someone should be on the money here when I ask them this.
44:38Right?
44:39The 55 pounds that you spent on DVDs, how many DVDs was that?
44:43110.
44:44110.
44:45And you sold 55?
44:47Mm-hmm.
44:48So, you're near enough bought double what you required.
44:51A massive overbuy.
44:52It was a big mistake.
44:54And then we've got this pricing strategy.
44:56I think it was about three o'clock, you dropped the prices.
44:59Yeah.
45:00What was the rationale behind dropping the prices?
45:02I just made the decision at that point, no, it's three o'clock, we need to get these things shifted.
45:07So, I dropped the price to eight pounds.
45:09But, I think Karen told me that you ended up with a car.
45:12Yeah.
45:13At four o'clock.
45:14And that was quite successful, wasn't it?
45:16Yeah.
45:17Yeah.
45:18And it was great because it looked good, it did attract attention.
45:20Wouldn't it have been a good idea to wait and see what the reaction was?
45:23But we had already dropped the price an hour or so before that car came.
45:27So, what I'm saying is the dropping of the price came first and then some of the ideas
45:32how to boost sales came afterwards.
45:35Hmm.
45:36And then Jamie, I think you said that you ended up as the most important element of the team.
45:42I didn't say I did.
45:43I thought my position was...
45:44Did I hear that correctly?
45:45Excellent feedback, I think you told Lawship.
45:48No, I could just give good feedback.
45:50You know, because I was, I was standing from afar seeing how the sales team was doing
45:55and making sure that everything was running smoothly.
45:58I get the feeling that you were showing a bit of disregard for the team leader.
46:03Absolutely, categorically not.
46:05I was only pointing out things that I would think would help the team win.
46:11So, you know, I wasn't bulldozing my way whatsoever.
46:16But actually, I felt quite sorry for Sandy at times because you were constantly pulling her to one side saying pricing, costumes.
46:24Even at points, Jamie, you came down and you were trying to sell.
46:27Yeah, I mean, the thing is, it can be quite irritating when...
46:30Because, I mean, it stuck in my head when you said in the morning,
46:32I think I'm really wasted, I'm one of the top salespeople, I don't think I should be doing this go-between thing.
46:37And if you have somebody coming down every hour, standing there for five minutes and then saying,
46:41you should be doing this, you should be doing that, you should be doing that.
46:43I'm being made out to be some kind of bulldozer here.
46:46It's feedback.
46:47It does come across as quite negative and it seems a bit sulky because you're not actually doing it yourself.
46:52Well, so was I a hindrance or...?
46:55Well, I wouldn't say it was helpful.
46:57Well, everyone said, that's good feedback, thanks for that.
47:00Well, look at the main points, why we boosted our sales.
47:02I wouldn't say it was a response to this feedback.
47:05What was it then?
47:06We dropped the prize and we went and got the car and none of them were a result of that feedback, were they?
47:11No, they weren't, no.
47:12Alright, listen, Sandy, which two people are you bringing back into this boardroom?
47:17Um, I think at the end of the day, from my point of view, the responsibility or, sorry, the error in this task, because...
47:30Names?
47:31Yeah, sorry, the error in this task has been with keeping costs down and sales.
47:36I'd have to bring in Chris and Liz because they were on my side on costings.
47:42Okay, well, you two gentlemen, go back to the house.
47:51Right, would you three step outside for a while?
47:58I'll call you back in shortly and decide which of you are leaving at this stage in the process, okay?
48:05That they got the pricing wrong.
48:13We were selling at 15 quid, right?
48:16How come they couldn't sell at 10 or 15 pounds?
48:19Why do they have to keep dropping the price?
48:21It must be down to salesmanship and I think that Chris and, sadly, Liz have got something to answer for.
48:26Stuart bags the brand, sold less but at a higher price.
48:30Exactly.
48:31Yeah, and that's when we made the profit.
48:33Sandish, she has been in the losing team five times.
48:37She's been in the last three, four times.
48:39But then she works very, very hard.
48:47Could you send the three of them in, please?
48:49Yes, we should go.
48:50You can go through to the boardroom now.
48:52Um, Chris and Liz, are you surprised to be back in here as Sandish's choice?
49:19Very surprised.
49:20Absolutely, yeah.
49:21Why?
49:22Well, I think at the end of the day, if you break down the task in terms of contribution,
49:25I think everything that we did to try and win this task has fundamentally come from me and Liz.
49:29And the other two, frankly, have done hardly a fraction of what we've done over the last couple of days.
49:33Basically, the way that I see it, it didn't logically have anything to do with Jamie and Christopher,
49:38because they did their jobs well.
49:40They could have messed up in the back room.
49:41They didn't.
49:42The orders came out.
49:43So I had to bring in the two people that were with me when we decided on prices, usage of DVDs, processing times.
49:50We were all responsible for that side of the task.
49:53That's why I brought them in.
49:54I don't understand why we were, though.
49:56We were never specifically put down, I want you to also do our costings, work out a pricing strategy, a sales strategy.
50:01We just started doing it.
50:02Yeah, we did it because it made sense.
50:04Yeah, we started doing it without you asking to do it.
50:06We started doing it because nobody else was doing it.
50:08Don't you think you could have spread the workload a bit more evenly, though, rather than asking me and Liz to do marketing, buying products, see the demonstration, do the costings, and then also sell it?
50:20Because it seems like we're being penalised for ultimately doing about 80% of the work on this task, because a couple of mistakes were made along the way.
50:27Well, fundamentally, I was project manager. I had a lot resting on my shoulders.
50:32I think my strategy of placing people was good. We didn't have any problems there.
50:36And I think that I was with, you know, Liz is good at numbers, and I would have expected that her projections of things would have been a bit better, to be honest.
50:45Sandish, I don't know how you can say that. I projected you the numbers that we were given, and then we sat collectively.
50:51We all overthought the DVDs. We all sort of projected too high.
50:57What do you say about the fact that Stuart's team was selling at £15, and in some cases, 20-odd quid, and they were just a little way away from you?
51:07Yeah, but, I mean, to answer that question, the other team sold at a higher price, but obviously sold less units, so therefore, you know, I think as a sales team, we did still sell more units.
51:17No, but if you're great sellers, I mean, you know, the easiest thing I've always found in the 40 years of business, you know, I haven't been blessed with actually working in an investment banking environment where there's no actual real product to be sold.
51:30I've actually toughed it out, you know, the hard way. I've had to make something, you know, and had to get someone to sell it and get someone to buy it.
51:38And I've come across loads of excuses from salespeople in my time. Normally, what they want is to be able to sell it for less. The easy sell.
51:48So, it seems to me that someone somewhere amongst the three of you has too easily capitulated to, oh, blimey, can't hard sell, £11.99, no-one's buying them, let's drop the price.
52:00I personally never really raised the issue of price, honestly, hand on heart.
52:04Well, Chris did.
52:05I was pretty much completely preoccupied on trying to get people in business-wise.
52:09No, hold on, let me just finish. I think the decision was made far too quickly. There's no opportunity to take a step back and just analyse what was happening and take a better strategy.
52:18And I think that's where the faults lie.
52:20But I still think that, Sandish, as manager, you could have been thinking through these things a little bit more and making some more decisive action.
52:26Chris, this is the fifth time you have been on a losing team. Mm-hmm. Say anything?
52:38First of all, I think it's a bit of a joke that I'm here today, but if you look at the teams which I've lost in, I'm still pretty confident in my performance, bar one, the last one, which I was in the bottom 3-4, which I still think, you know, at least I've lost.
52:49I came up with an idea. I've sold a dress for £300. I've also project managed and I project managed and we ended up breaking a record that week.
52:58The thing is about this whole process is that whereas, Chris, you know, you may have enjoyed things in the selling to trade tasks and may have thought that, you know, you've cracked it,
53:08it's tasks like this that take people out of their comfort zone that tells me whether they're able to operate in all types of situations, you know?
53:18You know, I am massively throwing myself out of my comfort zone. When I think, by and large, I've come through most of them pretty well.
53:24Hmm. Sandish, this is the fourth time you're in the final three.
53:29Yeah, I understand that, but I have always given it everything I could and it always has been with a view to the team winning. I haven't been trying to shine just myself and that I will maintain that and stand by that.
53:42Everything I've told you in this boardroom is the truth. I don't lie. I don't, I'm an honest person and that to me is important, having integrity.
53:49Well, I accept you're an honest person and I appreciate that, but what has that got to do with being in the losing team 5-7?
53:56Well, I don't know. I don't consider myself to be the reason that we lost those tasks. I want to win. I want the job with you.
54:03But I think I've got the right attitude for it and I think that I come across well to clients and I do get on with, you know, the majority of people as well, which I think is important.
54:12Hmm. And Liz, why shouldn't I fire you today?
54:21I think from day one I've been one of the key contributors to every team that I've worked with. On this task, you know, I've absolutely worked my guts out.
54:30I couldn't have done any more. When I thought there was a problem, I rose it and I tried to find a solution and did find a solution.
54:35I supported you, Sandish, and I was, I was making sure that things were getting done and looking at what needed to be done.
54:41And I really think I'm an important team member. I'm not an ego, but I do think I take the lead naturally and I'm a positive person. I get things done.
54:48OK, look, regretfully, someone's going today.
54:52Liz, the big error in my opinion here is the costings. Yeah, there's no question of it because it wasn't thought out and someone as meticulous as you should have picked it up.
55:11Chris have seen over the years in this boardroom, people sometimes think that they've, they're at the finishing line.
55:23Yeah, they think, oh, I was, you know, I was the greatest salesman in that. I broke the record in this. I did that and I did this and all that stuff.
55:30Don't work with me. I can assure you.
55:33Sandish, he was appointed by me as team leader. We've talked many times about planning. Clearly on this particular task, there was no planning.
55:50It's fair to say that, Liz, you have been a good candidate in the past seven weeks, but I think on this particular task, you slipped back a little bit, you know.
56:02But, um, Sandish, you're up against two very strong contenders here, so I'm going to have to let you go. You're fired.
56:14Right, thank you anyway, all of you.
56:26Go back to the house. Thanks very much.
56:29Too little, too late, I think, is, is, is really explains it about her.
56:36She lacks that bit of ruthlessness and killer instinct.
56:41I think he has made a mistake and let me go, but, um, what is that to say? He's made his decision.
57:02Whatever else I do, um, I know I'll be successful anyway, so.
57:11Whoa!
57:16Well, as soon as we got in there, he was kind of like, are you two surprised you're here, because...
57:25Was he after my blood?
57:27I don't think he was after anyone's blood.
57:29It wasn't after anyone's blood, but, because, obviously, Sandish was project manager, it kind of fell on her shoulders.
57:34Lucky for us that you've made so many screw-ups, because you could have actually won, you should have won.
57:41One job, now eight candidates remain.
57:48Lord Sugar's search for his apprentice continues.
57:53Next time...
57:54The next task is going to take you to Hamburg.
57:59Destination Deutschland.
58:011, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7...
58:03I hate the Germans as well.
58:06Exporting savoury snacks...
58:08Smoked sausage and sauerkraut.
58:13A little bit fat. Fat and strong.
58:15To bring home the bacon.
58:17That is good. That is wunderbar.
58:19Seems to me a little unprofessional, I'm sorry to say that.
58:22There's no luck in business. You're fired.
58:24You're fired.
58:28Now she's had a chance to dry her eyes.
58:30Sandish is over on BBC Two, having her say to Dara as to what went wrong in The Apprentice.
58:35You're fired.
58:36Claudia Winkleman is here on BBC One and BBC One HD with film 2010, later at 10.45.
58:54The Apprentice is over on BBC One and BBC One.
58:57That is not his fault with the film.
58:59I think, once it's OK, you're fired.
59:00I've got ten minutes and a lot of trouble on Twitter.
59:02I can't wait until I get there.
59:03I am a little bit too busy.
59:04I mean, I might have been the opportunity to do this.
59:05A little bit too busy.
59:06Now I'm not happy to enjoy cutting-edge.
59:07But I'm sure that I can't wait until I get there.
59:09I can't wait until I get to see that.
59:11I don't know.
59:12Now we have a lot of trouble.
59:14In The Apprentice.
59:15Respondence, when we are churning I'm trying to do this,
59:16I'll get a different spot to see.
59:17And I can't wait until I get there.
59:18I can't wait until I get there.
