00:00This is not a game. This is a 12-week job interview. It's a dog-eat-dog situation.
00:13Fourteen people have come to London in search of a job.
00:18There is no phone-in here. There is no text number. There is no panel of judges.
00:24I'm the one that decides who gets fired and I'm going to be the one, ultimately, who decides who gets hired.
00:33They've come to battle it out for a job with Sir Alan Sugar.
00:37I am the most belligerent person that you could ever come across.
00:41Tough and straight-talking, Sir Alan's built a business empire worth £800 million.
00:48Business is not about coming, piss my money up the wall.
00:51He's offering one job with a six-figure salary.
00:56To get it, they're going to have to live and work together.
01:00Don't fucking dick me around. I'm getting pissed off with it.
01:03Quite frankly, I'd like to get rid of the bleeding free of you.
01:06This is the ultimate job interview.
01:09You're fired. You're fired. You're a lightweight. You're fired.
01:12Previously on The Apprentice.
01:19Manny was on a high after leading the girls to victory.
01:24For the next task, Sir Alan made Ruth and Paul project managers.
01:29This task is all about advertising. Action.
01:32They're challenged to create an ad campaign for Sir Alan's fleet of aircraft.
01:37Get closer in, boys.
01:39It's not a one video.
01:41What do you want to do then, Joe?
01:43Ruth renewed her feud with Joe.
01:45I don't think a jingle's pitching it at the right level.
01:47I don't want to sleep in a bed of dreams.
01:49But she left Manny and Ansel to develop their big idea.
01:52The ultimate convenience is flagging down your own plane.
01:55Yeah, of course it is.
01:57I think that's a very powerful image.
01:59Both teams made their adverts on Sir Alan's £15 million jet.
02:04Oh, shit.
02:06Ruth was confident she had the winning ad.
02:08I would be absolutely gobsmacked if we didn't win.
02:11She was wrong.
02:14Sir Alan didn't like her ad.
02:17To me, that looks like a 1970s porno movie, Debbie Does Dallas.
02:20Worse still, he didn't like its message.
02:23This is not what Sir Alan wants me to advertise.
02:28Ruth brought Manny and Joe back for a bloody fight in the boardroom.
02:32Joe, I've got a very, very, very serious problem with you.
02:36It was Joe's third time in front of Sir Alan.
02:39But it was Manny that was fighting for his life.
02:42Can I finish?
02:44Just let me finish.
02:46If she's given a deadline, well, look in the dictionary, I've got time for this.
02:49Manny, you're fired.
02:53Manny became the fifth casualty of the boardroom.
02:57Now nine remain to fight for the chance to become the apprentice.
03:02At the house, the candidates wait for the survivors.
03:13Manny doesn't want it enough. Simple as that.
03:18I reckon it'll be one of the hottest boardrooms there's been.
03:24Yeah.
03:25There they are.
03:26No surprise, is it?
03:35Yay!
03:38Right again.
03:40Right again.
03:42Well done.
03:44Woo!
03:46There's Joe again, look.
03:48Sat there again.
03:49Look at that, you've got night and lights.
03:51Manny became very aggressive, started shouting.
03:53I was like, don't shout.
03:55And then he started saying things.
03:56I said, oh, you could put patronising on your list then, Sir Alan.
03:58And he just literally went round and round and round.
04:01And here we are.
04:02So.
04:03Ha!
04:04So close.
04:05Hello.
04:136am.
04:14It's Jenny from Sir Alan's office.
04:16Good morning.
04:17Don't speak in.
04:18Good morning.
04:19Sir Alan would like you to meet him at his house at 9am this morning.
04:23OK.
04:28We're leaving here at 7am to meet Sir Alan at his house at 9am.
04:31But we've got to pick the project managers before and it's the same teams.
04:35We have to move on to see some more.
04:37Man.
04:38Come on.
04:39Come on.
04:41I don't think we've watched it anymore.
04:42Just waiting for us.
04:44Before leaving, the teams meet to select project managers.
04:48Last week's losers, Velocity, choose the only one who hasn't done the job.
04:54Ansel.
04:55Hey!
04:56Job done.
04:57That's good.
04:58Be in without even having to say a word.
05:00Yeah!
05:01Sadly, sadly.
05:02On invictives.
05:03On Invicta no one wants the job between me done and Sharon. I think you mentioned yesterday done. He was quite keen didn't you?
05:14Does that mean dad would do it as well?
05:16I think it should be a girl because we've had a boy. I think it should be a girl. I think it should be a girl.
05:21Well if you want a girl grab Sharon.
05:23I wonder if he's got a big formal thing happening at his house and he's wanting us to organise that.
05:27They were trying to decide exactly who the project manager was going to be and I was actually dreading it to be honest because I did not want it to be Sharon.
05:37If you really want to do it you can do it.
05:42That's done. It's Sharon.
05:44I'm happy now.
05:519am. The teams arrive at Sir Alan's home.
05:55Now that's a house.
05:58That is a house.
06:00Whee! Look at this.
06:02It's almost as nice as my card.
06:04Look at his cards. Look at all those cards packed there.
06:07Wait, wait, wait, wait.
06:08There. Oh my god. Look at them.
06:21Morning.
06:22Now, you might be wondering what we're doing here in front of some of these cars.
06:28Well, in exactly 24 hours time you are going to be on the forecourts selling second hand cars in a real life situation to real customers.
06:39OK, and you'll be paid a commission. The team that comes back with the most amount of commission earned will win. The team that earns the least amount of commission, one of you is going to get fired.
06:53Selling is key to Sir Alan's success and he learned it at an early age.
07:00I remember my early days as a salesman and I used to work as a kid to supplement my income on Saturdays when I was at school. And I would go, I worked in shoe shops, I worked in menswear shops, I worked in greengrocers. And you know, within an hour or so of watching some of the other salespeople at it, you knew what you had to say to sell.
07:22We're into full Vauxhall Peugeot, the mainstream brands Renault. Yeah. Possibly a couple of sub premiums. We need to look at depreciation and that sort of stuff. Yeah, yeah.
07:32Project manager Ansell seems to have the perfect team to sell cars. Sam's worked at Ford for seven years. Joe trained managers at MG Rover and Ruth is a sales professional.
07:49I thought it was quite ironic because the previous evening I was talking to somebody and they said what would be the ideal task and I said selling second hand cars. So I was smirking to myself.
08:00Yeah, Tass's going to be fine. On the other team, Sharon's boys love cars.
08:06Oh, I'm going to love it. I'm going to absolutely love this, Tass. It's going to be so much fun.
08:11I've had a lot of people in my life say to me you should be a car salesman. Yeah, I get that a lot as well. Three magnetic cars.
08:16But the project manager hasn't got a clue about them.
08:19When I realised I had to go and sell cars, I was like, Jesus, I don't know nothing about cars. My knowledge of cars is do they look good? Nice colour. They've got a CD player and a convertible. That's it.
08:29Trade sales just outside London, one of Britain's biggest car supermarkets.
08:44Oh my God, bigger than God's earth. It's huge.
08:49Sliced in two by a busy A-Road, over a thousand cars are displayed in a bewildering array of makes, models and specifications.
08:58Oh, this is a little chestnut, isn't it? Yeah, this is it.
09:01Wow, they seem to pile them high and sell them chips.
09:03Wow.
09:04It's a supermarket. It's a supermarket for cars. It's a supermarket for cars.
09:09It's a huge site. But there's only a few hours to learn about it before selling starts tomorrow.
09:25Hello, Velocity Henry. How are you? I'm Neil. How are you?
09:33To help, each team is allocated its own in-house sales manager.
09:37Please don't lose this because if you do, you'll be completely lost and don't bother coming to me because basically you'll be on your own.
09:43If the teams don't sell tomorrow, the company will lose a small fortune.
09:50So it's straight into the classroom to learn how to catch a customer.
09:57In the business, they call it qualifying the sale.
10:00This is the most important thing ever in car sales.
10:04If you don't do this, if you deviate from this, it will end in tears.
10:09Just a quick bit of qualification would be, what's the car you're looking for today?
10:13Because nine times out of ten, they will know what car they want when they come here.
10:16Oh, it's Ford Focus LX.
10:18But as you're walking along with them to the car, just in normal casual conversation, you'll say, okay, what are you driving at the moment?
10:25That is a leading qualifying question.
10:28And then your next answer should be, are you looking to part-exchange that?
10:32So you've gone very, very quickly in two sentences.
10:35Yeah.
10:36Yeah?
10:37You've found out what they want, and they've actually come to buy a Ford Focus, and they've got a Peugeot 306 as a part-exchange.
10:44Yeah.
10:45Just in casual conversation.
10:46So whoever picks it up and does it properly will sell the most cars.
10:49It's as simple as that, okay?
10:50Please.
10:51If anything else, yeah, dream about it tonight.
10:54Qualification.
10:58Outside, watched by Sir Alan's advisors Nick and Margaret, the teams get a chance to inspect the stock.
11:04All these you can sell, yeah?
11:05Every single one of them.
11:06That's got a tape deck in it, you know?
11:07Focus.
11:08Focus, right.
11:09The focuses are down here.
11:10Hey, that is well cheap.
11:11We've got till six, haven't we?
11:12Come on, Deo.
11:13Why does that one look different to that one?
11:14Because it's silver, and that's blue.
11:15No, I know that.
11:16This whole thing lifts up, doesn't it?
11:17Yeah.
11:18Your boot would all go like that?
11:19Yeah.
11:20Or is that?
11:21Just the boot.
11:22Just go like that.
11:23Ah, okay.
11:24So the saloon, just the boot door opens.
11:25Yeah.
11:26Whereas in a hatchback, the boot door on the back window opens.
11:27Yeah, I hope that's right, yeah.
11:28Is that how you differentiate?
11:29The key here is to get as many done as you can.
11:30I'd be surprised if I didn't do well.
11:31What the hell, I'll probably be the best when I...
11:32Oh, good afternoon, sir, how are you?
11:33How are you?
11:34Oh, thanks.
11:35I'm Ansel.
11:36Hello, Ansel, how are you doing?
11:37Okay.
11:38Good, thank you.
11:52Finally, just time for Ansel to show up.
11:53It's a good point.
11:54It's a good point.
11:55I'll have to get a good point.
11:56We're going to have to be a good point.
11:58for ansel to show their in-house manager what he's learned any problems with the car uh funny
12:04enough uh yeah about six months ago i spent a grand on it a grand yeah what happened air
12:08conditioning which is probably what it's worth now i should imagine a thousand pounds right okay
12:13is it is it worth a thousand time you think i'm just finishing off if that's okay right i'll be
12:18able to sit sit you down and go through that if that's okay yeah do you ever answer a question
12:22ansel oh yeah absolutely i do yeah but i'll take my time with it i just i just obviously looking
12:27through yeah to be honest it looks a nice car it looks like something we'd definitely like to own
12:37back at the house ansel calls a meeting in the team office
12:44sam's had an idea for a discount voucher and some color branding
12:47for today only 50 pound off purple team yeah delicate messages and let's make the purple team
12:55bolder bigger yeah downstairs sharon's team are mugging up on a 250 pound car protection kit
13:05anyone selling it will earn extra commission
13:11in the case of carpets let me demonstrate with a spot of ribena
13:15just look how the ribena soaks into the untreated one and as if magic look at how the ribena just
13:21floats on the surface that's what our product does for your car if you can't sell that to anyone then
13:26you're a shit salesperson i've got to say the fact of the matter is these services sell themselves if
13:30they didn't then they'd be customers who don't take them out and then just make up some little
13:34bullshit story about well i'm not trying to push you into it mate but the end of the day you know it
13:38might sound like your usual cheesy car salesman pitch but is that not bullshit though of course it is
13:45of course it is going to be a complete whole day of
13:46bullshit
14:01the day of the sale
14:06ansell's rallying his purple team more balloons for that car signs printed overnight draw attention
14:17to three managers specials cars chosen by the team that carry big discounts let's go
14:25if nine o'clock comes you look keep doing cars and what i will do is roof and i will start yeah
14:36it's not anything in particular
14:46the all-important commission is one percent of the sale price
14:50so it's in the team's interest to keep prices as high as possible good absolutely good how are you
14:58getting on so far you're doing all right you need any more help you think today only 50 pound minimum
15:04of certain cars so if you need any help come and speak to the team in the purple sash hello it's a
15:10nice car isn't it that is the ultimate aircon what cars are you looking at in particular convertibles or is
15:17for you within minutes ruth qualifies her first customer but across the road sharon's team are
15:26still looking for one why don't you just go and get the customers i can't run after them you don't run
15:34after customers i'm not asking you to run after them they're crossing the road so why don't you just
15:38go we will do that why don't you just go ahead and do that and we will go ahead and do that you were
15:41wanting to stand in the corner a minute ago and i'm telling you not to can you just go and sell
15:45please please go on watch out we're going to get a lot of this yeah saeed is playing up and i was
15:52told him to shut up what about what's up with him i don't want him standing in the corner i want him
15:55over there selling yeah but he just says start because i know what i'm doing but he's wanting to stand at
16:02the end i've done this before let them do their own thing that's their team that's their responsibility
16:08they should just stop bloody whinging and go and sell some cars you like the look of this car
16:13do you what are you looking for today the in-house managers will report back to sir alan later
16:21have you looked at the purgeos before um i've looked at a few looked at a few different mates
16:25but it's definitely a page i want i've got my heart set my purgeo fantastic price let me jump in the other
16:29side okay right let me explain a few details about this car this is a brand new car hence the reason
16:35it's not plated that offer there is for today only so if you buy today you actually get there
16:40now as you can see on the forecourt and on numerous ones around slow you cannot buy this brand new car
16:45for that the only mileage that you've actually got on it is delivery mileage you've got cd player it's
16:50a good spec it's immaculately clean this car comes with two years warranty um it's but as far as we're
16:57concerned it is the manager special today because this is a pure bargain let me take you inside then and
17:01we'll discuss it even further if i can actually do it at that price are you interested in buying
17:06today yeah great okay thanks a lot cheers seriously thanks in just 15 minutes ruth's got her first sale
17:18still no sales for sharon's team but saeed's got an eye on ansel's purple sashes
17:25he and michelle decide to steal the idea how are you going to kill are you going to tie this around
17:31me and i'll tie one on you this whole thing's in a mess but that's because there's no there's no
17:36organization and there's just no structure to what we're doing we're just everyone's just doing what
17:39they want well the only way out of this is to sell a shit loads of cars that's what we're going to do
17:44we will i just couldn't believe when they had gone across the road to sell cars there was people in
17:49the forecourts and uh they came back with this sash idea just on the basis that the other team had
17:54done it i thought that was disgraceful it's like i'm a fucking nursery i could look after five kids
17:59better i can look after this one
18:04it's the last one that we can secure for you but obviously you said actually if you want it's the
18:09keys here across the road ansel's close to a deal working alongside him is joe oh god what a car
18:17i can put the sticker up so that nobody else because if we walk away then somebody else
18:21yeah thanks very much and it's the last one so we put the sticker up we can go and sit down and
18:26we can talk about your super and see how we can sort that out is that okay yes right fantastic
18:31right let's go so i put natalie on the windscreen what's her name natalie so it's not an issue anyway
18:38should we go through to the office it's another sale but it won't happen unless ansel can agree a part
18:46exchange price come on start it up let's hear the beast what are you looking for if i told you
18:51what i'm looking for you probably run off into the distance i'm looking for well if i was to sell
18:55that privately i would put that up for probably 16. wow um we're really looking between the seven to
19:02eight mark um yeah from my point of view uh is that something we can work with unfortunately not
19:09today you know because i know i can get a lot more for it i'll do this that's all right the deal
19:14collapses the sale won't count
19:25fired up by the loss ansel's team step up a gear big size boot hatchback so you can get loads of stuff in
19:33there how does that sound is that what you're looking for yeah which one are you in now let
19:46it's a browser's paradise you know this
19:52by late morning ansel's team have sold three cars two of them managers specials
19:58like it definitely for you yeah let's go into the deal then fantastic right
20:09sharon's team have sold none the other team are whipping our asses and i so we've got to sell
20:14lots of cars in the next five hours in less than five hours with her manager's specials attracting
20:21zero interest paul suggests slashing prices they've sold their ford car this morning you're
20:27perjotour sick because it was about a grand underneath right let's see your money off that
20:30we've already seen it there which is 1500 yeah no i agree it can be i reckon we bring everything
20:34to the bottom to sell the warranty and guarantee exactly right the scenic needs to be 11 499 that's
20:39taking a grand off it leaves us next 500 to negotiate what does it need to be done paul right so we
20:45need another 150 off this one so we need yeah yeah let's say not some more yeah we need to leave
20:49ourselves at least 100 quid right where do we get the numbers from
20:57teams have been told they can only deal with two customers at one time
21:03on the red team sharon and paul negotiating one sale
21:10but saeed wants to go it alone on another
21:12okay um i can do dun and michelle have no choice but to wait while saeed talks
21:22i can guarantee you i'll do the best possible and talks okay and second you're spending 10 000
21:27pounds i come from a very very hard working background i've worked all my life for everything
21:32okay no handout so i understand the value of money i guarantee you okay should we walk around so
21:39where are you where are you from which country you're from i'm kenyan asian kenyan asian okay i'm
21:44from bangladesh myself i was born in bangladesh she came over here early early early age and i've been
21:50here since your wife from the same country as well no okay
21:55okay we've been waiting for an hour and ten minutes and he doesn't look like it's quite
22:04close to finishing the deal yet so it means it's quite frustrating for dun and i because we're just
22:08sitting around we can see the cow park filling up with people but yet we're stuck with the same
22:11customer 25 minutes over now what should we do well we just need to tell him that we're washing out
22:16for time we're getting a bit fidgety if we do it as a package okay i can knock this by 200
22:26an hour and 25 minutes now one year one 13 000 miles okay so this is the biggest deal you're
22:30going to get today okay again so if you're thinking of selling your car in two three years
22:35with the the car protection system and the guarantee you can sell this back at a profit in two years
22:42so saeed's casual promise doesn't go unnoticed john right hello just sit down yeah you've been
22:51heard to say to the people that she'd buy a car from us at price house in two years time you could
22:57you'd be in a position to sell it at profit i mean hello you know no no no no that's the price
23:02that you're paying for it now in hindsight if you want to sell it in a couple of years okay this will
23:05hold its value as much as possible now yeah just look you don't need to say that you know the car's
23:10cheap kind of right fine okay any sort of outlandish statements like that you just can't do it yeah
23:18outside paul's next customer wants to trade in his gas guzzling four by four for a new mini
23:25electric windows it's not leather is it oh it is yeah aircon look uh sunroof electric sunroof cd cd
23:35you've got abs i presume abs electric windows electric hood electric seats climate control
23:42yes and you've got power assisted steering yeah yeah okay have you got any idea of what you're
23:47expecting for yours i haven't got a clue i mean i've had it four years and i've paid 13 and a half so i
23:52mean god knows what what the depreciation is on it well it's quite hard to be honest um the main the
23:58reason being it's a v6 it's four liters petrol for the exact same reason that you now don't want it
24:03um so the price that we can get is three thousand pounds flat that is going to be the price and that's
24:10the best price we can do really i mean although you've got the full service history we've had
24:13we have had them come in a lot lower than that three yeah it's unfortunately kevin it's just the kind
24:20of car that it is god that's a hell of a lot of a drop i mean that's 10 grand i've lost in four years
24:28yeah unfortunately that's that's the case they can't do any better than that
24:32than three i mean just looking on on what we've got on the mini at the moment um you know nine four
24:39nine nine that i mean i mean to tell the truth i was i was i was thinking more like five i'll get
24:44five or six for mine really yeah i mean that's a little shock that is that's that's half of what i'm
24:48expecting on that yeah i just don't think well i know you won't sell it for more than three thousand
24:54pounds no well i'd have to disagree with you there but i know i will well that's that's your opinion
24:59obviously oh yeah i don't i don't believe you will but then again there's no point in me telling you
25:02if you if you believe that well i really appreciate your time okay see you later all right thank you
25:08you've done well okay faster just make sure you know it was just that you know the party changed but
25:14it won't stop but you're not gonna get an item on that okay finally after a two and a half hour
25:22negotiation saeed secures the first sale of the day for sharon's team included in the deal two company
25:31extras to bump up the commission i think that's a that's the deal all right thank you very much thank
25:37you thank you very much thanks
25:52ruth has spent 45 minutes watching sam trying to sell his first car
25:59one of you must have a bottom line that you can give that to me for we have and it's not a lot the
26:03market as you know this the way it's a car supermarket so we if you try and get this car
26:07anywhere else you know you it's going to be more expensive so this is cut to the bone anyway right
26:12we've given you 50 pounds the most we can go to is another 50 pounds on that so we can drop it 100
26:17to 8 499. that's a pretty competitive price if you think it's you know it's it's a car supermarket
26:23we really can't uh drop below that with the customer wavering ruth moves in for the kill
26:30i mean you haven't got to have it done for three years how much warranty has it gone on it samuel
26:33well it'll have it'll have three years it's got three years warranty so it's clean as a whistle
26:39yeah yeah it includes what engine gearbox it's a manufacturer's warranty i'll tell you we'll even
26:43close the ear in for free yeah yeah you're gonna go for it yeah i think i am all right okay do you
26:49want me to write sold on there to make sure nobody comes and buys it right what's your name
26:53sadler you said i'm sadler across the lot project manager ansell's got a problem
27:04it's the sale he and joe agreed earlier then lost over the part exchange
27:10volking come in the car is still how they left it four hours ago can anyone tell me how's this car is
27:17please please well no because the sign is obviously not in it and we've left it so what chance has
27:24the customer got of buying this car well none in that situation yeah absolutely look at the screen
27:31yeah it's been me i would think okay what time yeah very early on today i don't know about 11 20 past
27:4211. can you tell me why it's not back in this yeah yeah it's an excuse i'm just number time yeah i know
27:47it's my i know it's my fault i just haven't had time to come back to it yeah i know it's now 20 past
27:51three in my book yeah how many hours is that no no it's four hours four hours and you haven't that
27:55time yeah what you've been doing for four hours i'll sell some cars yeah bullshit yeah i know i accept
28:01can't stand bullshit okay in the story yeah please yeah do not i want honestly i won't have the
28:07conversation again i will not have the conversation again yeah i'll just turn it in i want that screen
28:12cleared and back up for sale as soon as possible yeah unacceptable i knew that i was in the wrong
28:19but there was two people involved in the sale of that car and what pissed me off is that people
28:23don't stand up for it you know i took stood up took that on the chin but i wasn't the only person
28:28involved in that sale and that annoyed me a little bit i'm full
28:41ansel's team gets straight back to work but project manager sharon pulls her team off the lot
28:47she wants to discuss poor sales figures but dun is missing three which is who did you get it then
28:59unaware of sharon's meeting he's on the verge of closing a deal now with the class of numbers i'm
29:04not even going to mess about with your my best present i'm just going to give you what i can do
29:08see see the best price of the car first you can do for me and then at the end of the day i will decide
29:12i'll just begin yeah can i get out of your wardrobe for two minutes please excuse me guys just two
29:18seconds all right right we've got to have a 10-minute meeting right we're all waiting on you
29:27we can't leave at all this has been two hours and 15 minutes for this and how long because the rest
29:32just can't make i've got i've done it now i'm done i'm just going to see if we just need to say yes
29:36he's called his daughters he's called his family i've got five minutes and then i'm going to have to
29:39cancel the sale and go out right five minutes as soon as he's finished we'll come out and i'll have
29:45the sales picture so we're just sat in that room for 20 minutes waiting for someone now that he's
29:50ready we're walking out because they're having the meeting they didn't want to stay there yeah we're
29:55having the meeting but i'm saying let's just get out because everybody's getting grumpy let's get out
30:00you're right let's get out let's get get some fresh air right we can't have sales going on for two
30:07hours at all we're having two hours and an hour i know it's difficult that's an awful long time to
30:12be selling a car can you make sure you're asking the right questions initially okay first question
30:19is are you looking to buy today second one what's your budget how much you got to pay it spent right
30:28the saturday afternoon rush is in full swing it's uh 1.9 well focus
30:34despite her advice to others project manager sharon hasn't sold a single car
30:52the rest of sharon's team suddenly go into overdrive your mum's paying get in
30:57and they're not just selling cars they're doubling their commission by selling company extras
31:06just to show you the sort of effects again this is a treated fabric this is untreated this is
31:11ribena and let's do the untreated first as you can see that's completely absorbed and when we do it
31:20here that stays on top sharon's team is on a roll yeah okay cheers but the other team's in trouble
31:28again sales manager neil collars ansel two of your team we've shown some customers around yeah yeah so
31:35masters yeah the customer asked on several occasions as the car get air conditioning no no no no no no
31:42right no one asks anyone any technical questions as to whether the car has got air conditioning
31:46the customer's pissed off right the car has got air conditioning they've got hold of one of my
31:51salesmen and they yeah they want to buy the car they've got a voucher but everyone's left them
31:56you haven't lost them yeah go and deal with them right yeah end off i'm really sorry i understand that
32:03you basically you wanted air conditioning and we didn't find out whether a car had air conditioning
32:08and it's a bit of a alarm because i've been looking at right okay and it's which which car is it this car
32:22ansel keeps the customer who finally gets his air con and ansel gets his sale
32:29joe is still struggling she hasn't sold a car and can't seem to attract a buyer
32:40hello this is your local friendly uh salesperson that's me and my mobile number we'll be rounding
32:45about so save your legs we can get the keys and sort you out just give support now that looks like two
32:50people that never think of two about cars am i right hello beautiful day for buying a car don't
32:58you think i bought all my like woolly jumpers and everything with me this morning what are you
33:04looking all suspicious for like the big guy in the glasses or the girl with the hair okay no problem
33:10nice to meet you enjoy the rest of your day no problem all the best result no sale give us a shout yeah
33:16yeah joe's style um that we just experienced with the corsair um the customers almost running away
33:22from her uh and i told her that i said look you know they were literally just they weren't happy as
33:27they were leaving and wanted to get away from you could you just check that across the road
33:32sharon's team continue to clock up sales that's a balance of six thousand seven hundred and ninety eight
33:38pounds here yeah yeah but out on the lot she still hasn't closed a deal herself
33:46she's tagged on to dun a car bath i think cleaner than that one so what is it
33:55foxhole well to be honest it would if you're thinking about this type of stuff what we do is
33:59the the car protection uh all right yeah the car care system
34:04sharon just put me to one side and just clarified to me that this was her sale regardless of what happens
34:08so um which is it's fine i just i just found it a little bit petty that that you know we're squabbling
34:15over who gets credit for it now i mean let's concentrate and get this help first and then
34:18worry about who gets credit for it i'm not interested in that type of stuff right now
34:22today has been very frustrating really from a project management point of me it's been a disaster
34:28there's been no vision uh no structure no strategy uh it's just do what you want to be honest
34:34um and i think everyone in the team feels feels like this
34:37done inside you think they know everything about cars um and are eager to get on but i know nothing
34:45about cars the boys aren't listening to me because they don't they know i don't know anything about
34:49cars so it's been really difficult um project managing this one i'm going to be cutting with the 7pm
34:55deadline minutes away ansell's salesforce go hunting for one last deal sharon's team are hunting for their
35:04project manager in the failing light ruth sees her chance what sort of car are you looking for
35:14a merc or a lexus oh i'll tell you what we have got what i'm gonna look
35:20you gotta see me play front loading the car is locked ruth sends her project manager to get the keys
35:26all right you can run to roof dead i can't run that quick
35:34okay let's just have a look over here you have got retractable so you can put it in and out
35:40so that's all electric yeah so we just side angles are electric your front your back you can see this
35:45is a clean car
35:46beat you by five quid sharon's team have called it a day but she's not with them it was hard work
35:56hard days work it was where's our project manager anywhere it's an absolute joke
36:05don't worry about it we don't we we
36:06oh no i don't think the team worked very well today and and they never gave me the support so
36:15i'm a bit annoyed about it and i really do think that we've lost
36:21sharon was upset i don't know why um and it's going to sound particularly quite harsh but i'm not
36:27particularly i don't particularly care because i think business is business if you're upset with the
36:32way that somebody's behaving then you should come over and speak to them and resolve it
36:36sharon just disappeared i'm going to give these fluffy dice to um that customer
36:41said i would i think the way that the team reacted to sharon was an absolute disgrace
36:46i felt really really sorry for her and then sharon was just maybe a bit weak um but in a defense you
36:53know she was overpowered by people not giving her respect the idea is you support your project manager
36:58whatever decision they make
36:59with seconds to spare ruth closes the last deal of the day for ansel's team
37:06i must admit you've made my day today
37:10i've missed count but that's irrelevant it's the fact that i actually love and the same as
37:14cars so thank you very much okay i'll go next year in just 10 hours the teams have sold cars worth 170 000
37:23pounds
37:36next day in the boardroom the teams wait to discover which of them has earned the most commission
37:53so
38:05Morning. Morning, Sharon.
38:17Ansel, Sharon, you were the team leaders, yeah?
38:20Yes.
38:21Good team manager, Ansel?
38:23Yeah, I thought he was very good.
38:24Good team manager? Yeah?
38:26Yeah.
38:27Happy? No bickering? No undermining from anybody, Ansel?
38:30No.
38:31You're happy? Adam under control, yeah?
38:33Yeah, yeah, I feel so, yeah.
38:35Good team leader?
38:37I think Sharon did a good job.
38:40Saeed, what do you reckon?
38:41I think Sharon did an OK job, sir.
38:44Done?
38:45Could be better, could be worse.
38:46Michelle?
38:47Could be better.
38:49What do you think? How do you think you did?
38:51I did the best I could with the...
38:55Out of depth or what?
38:56Well, I think that the lack of support from my team
38:58was the biggest obstacle for me.
39:01Lack of support?
39:02Yes.
39:02You didn't have any backing from it?
39:03No backing except from Paul.
39:05Michelle, what do you think?
39:07Do you think he was undermining the manager
39:08because she wanted to get home and doing your job?
39:10In terms of Sharon saying that we wasn't backing her,
39:13I would probably question what there was to back
39:15because there didn't seem to be a plan.
39:18We didn't really know what we were doing.
39:19So it's very difficult, therefore,
39:21to say that we didn't follow what we should have been
39:22because we weren't really clear what we should have been doing.
39:25Said, would I buy a second-hand car off of you?
39:34No.
39:35Do you know John, who I spoke to,
39:38told me that he would have sent you home?
39:42You know why?
39:44Porky's.
39:44We all made mistakes.
39:48I learned and I did not repeat what I said
39:49in the first sale throughout the years.
39:51You got bollocking, didn't you, from John?
39:53I wouldn't say it was bollocking.
39:54I would say he educated me.
39:55He consulted you, did he?
39:56I see.
39:56He educated me.
39:57Fair enough.
39:57Not to say six months.
39:58It was a consultation.
39:59Fair enough.
40:00It was a matter.
40:00Right.
40:01OK.
40:02Margaret, would you read out the figures for your team, please?
40:05Velocity sold 10 cars.
40:07Their commission on car sales was £851.40.
40:11And they also sold two professional car care products, £20.
40:16So their total, £871.40.
40:20£871.40.
40:22Right.
40:22OK, Nick?
40:23Victor also sold 10 cars,
40:26generating a commission of £867.40,
40:30plus extra guarantees, four off,
40:33and the pro car care, five off,
40:37giving a total of £1.077.40.
40:43OK, so the extras won it for you.
40:46Yeah?
40:46These extras come with big commission.
40:49And it seems to me that you lot
40:51must have hung on to that and recognised that
40:54because that's what won the day for you.
40:56I've got a great treat for you.
40:58It's a black tie night.
41:00I've hired a boat for you down the Thames.
41:04It's called a casino night out.
41:05There's a full gourmet dinner, champagne, the works.
41:10You've got the boat to yourself.
41:11Have a great time.
41:14You lot, off you go.
41:17You'll come back in the boardroom.
41:19One of you will get fired.
41:21They're not a happy team, are they?
41:38No, no.
41:39I don't like each other.
41:40I don't like each other, really.
41:41No, not at all.
41:42On the Thames, Sir Alan's treat gets off to a good start.
41:58After cocktails, it's below decks for dinner.
42:06Guys, can we have a toast?
42:07Yes, let's have a toast.
42:09To winning.
42:10To winning.
42:10And whatever's happened has happened.
42:12And can we just enjoy tonight, please?
42:14Cheers.
42:15But after the meal, a row.
42:24Why does he care?
42:25Why can I not say it?
42:27Paul is accused of attacking project manager Sharon behind her back.
42:31Apparently, last night, I was slagging Sharon's management style outside.
42:36Now, that is bullshit.
42:37You can't believe she did say that.
42:39Right, well, do you not think...
42:41Why is she so bothered about what we're doing?
42:43Who's she?
42:44Would that be me that stood here?
42:45That would be you, yeah.
42:46Because you two are having a conversation, and you're acting like I'm not here.
42:48It's Chinese whispers.
42:50By the time it gets to Sharon, it's completely different.
42:51It's completely different, right?
42:52And that's my fault, then?
42:53Basically.
42:53It makes it out that we went outside last night and had a chat about Sharon.
42:56Well, that's not what I said.
42:56Sharon and the task wasn't even mentioned.
42:58We were talking about other...
42:59It's not an ideal world.
42:59But you're not listening to me.
43:01Because you're talking shit.
43:02I don't think so, Paul.
43:03You are.
43:04You're talking absolute shit.
43:05You're up.
43:06Fuck off.
43:06You're not even listening to me, Paul.
43:07Because you're not making sense.
43:09You're not making sense.
43:10Ask me a question.
43:11You don't even let me answer it.
43:12Justify yourself, then.
43:12You tell me one thing that I've said.
43:14I don't want to justify myself to you.
43:15Because you're talking shit.
43:16I don't think so.
43:17Well, tell me one thing that I said about Sharon, and I'll back off, like I've said.
43:20Tell me now.
43:21I repeat it.
43:21Right.
43:21What I've done in all of this is I made a mistake, and I apologise to you,
43:25because I repeated something that you told me to Sharon, which did centre around you.
43:29Right, which you didn't even hear from my mouth.
43:31No.
43:32That's your mistake.
43:33You passed on something that you didn't even hear me say.
43:36Yeah, I did.
43:36Secondly, secondly.
43:37Well, that's your...
43:38What more can I say?
43:47After almost coming to blows, they decide to blow some money.
43:51I just asked for five thousand.
43:53I just asked for, like, a couple of quid.
43:55Oh, probably.
43:56But Michelle stays away.
43:59I think as a team, I think we're pretty much finished, because, you know, there is a lot
44:06of angry feelings, and I feel kind of quite ground up on, I guess, by the rest of the team.
44:14Oh, Jesus, I'll put five hundred on five.
44:16Back in the boardroom, the losers return to face Sir Alan.
44:45Hi Jenny, will you send them in please? Yes, sir. So I'll see you
44:53I
45:09Well, and so I spoke to
45:12Neil who was the professional with you, right?
45:15He went too impressed about you as a team leader. What you got to say about that?
45:19Sir, Alan as far as I was concerned the two teams that we had are equally split the talents that we had available
45:26Ruth was very strong salesperson, so I asked Ruth to take one team
45:30I had the other team, but I knew on the day when it came down to it
45:34There was only the two of us that were going to be the key salespeople and that was really how we focused our day
45:39I wouldn't have known to look at the four of you that you were actually in charge of the team on Saturday. Ruth
45:45Did you take over?
45:46Not to my knowledge. No, I mean no, I mean I'm quite strong as it was but um
45:51Sales is I'd say my key strength, but I don't think I took over. Did you? No, I didn't think Ruth took over
45:59No, because my concern Ruth is is that yeah, you know
46:02Being overpowering perhaps sometimes is a sign to me that you can't work with a little bit of authority and that you'd perhaps don't respect your team leader
46:11No, that's not the case at all. I could certainly work with anybody
46:14Every team leader that I've worked with has never had a problem with me voice in my opinion
46:18I know when to stop which is what I did that day
46:21But the major difference between you and the other team was the extras now
46:26Let's talk about these extras a little bit because I don't think you signed on to this here
46:30So Alan we'd absolutely did when we had we didn't because you didn't sell any when we had our plan in the evening
46:36We absolutely expressed it was so important that we do sell extras and we also said that we think that might be
46:41Why didn't you then? I mean during the course of the day we weren't able to
46:46Samuel can I ask you a a a direct question? Yes, of course, sir
46:51Do you think if you weren't there it would have made any difference well, sir, Alan? I think I've already declared that I'm not the strongest salesman
46:58Yeah, I don't want to hear that song any more because yeah
47:00I recognize that but I was the only one that identified on the team that in fact we were both going to ask you a question
47:07Do you think if you weren't there would have made any difference? Yes, and I think it made a difference that I was there
47:14How many did you sell then Samuel? I mean, I think there was two there was the manager special focus
47:19Um, and then also the Astra with the tool chat, but you actually sold them you reckon yeah? Yeah, I mean I took the lead
47:25Do you sell any cars Joe? Did you sell any cars?
47:28Um, answer and I were working as a team
47:29Uh, I didn't ask that question. Did you sell a car? Yes or no?
47:34Um, it'd be difficult to say because we were working as a team. Did you sell a car? Yes or no?
47:39I don't as a team we sold 10 so I'm not
47:41I'm talking about the team. I know I can see that in writing. Did you sell a car? Yes or no? Did I close one? Probably not
47:49You basically didn't sell any cars
47:50Someone in the car?
47:52It's given an answer when I did sell cars there because my my approach
47:54Did you, as far as I'm concerned in our team
47:57I closed the deals
47:58We can all talk to customers initially in rapport but at the end of the day
48:02It's getting a customer to say yes and I think on our sales it was me
48:05Will you close them? Yes
48:06I'm getting a bit mixed up with the maths here at the moment
48:11You sold six, you sold four, he sold two
48:14Well, I know that I had four customers that said yes in terms of me filling out paperwork and agreeing a deal
48:21Were they part of her sales then?
48:23No, Samuel took an active part
48:25The two cars that Samuel's actually describing were part of the deals that I closed
48:28But we did work very well
48:29So you didn't sell them then?
48:31He had an active part in negotiation
48:33One of you sold them, you either sold them or he sold them
48:35I state that I sold six, I closed six sales that day
48:38Right, so the two car experts sold nothing
48:40That's what you're basically telling me
48:42I'll close six
48:43Joe, all over the place I heard
48:50Would you say that?
48:52Yeah, absolutely
48:52Out of control, someone might have said to me
48:54I will say that
48:55Out of control?
48:58That surprised me, yeah
48:59Because I think on the day I was like
49:00Keep watching everybody and watching what was going on and stuff like that
49:03So, you know, to my mind you put the energy in when you need it
49:06And then you reserve it for when you don't
49:08When you need it is when you should have sold a car
49:09Which you didn't sell any
49:10Yeah
49:11Samuel, is she up and down all over the place?
49:14Yes, she was, Sir Alan
49:15She was erratic
49:17Joe tends to panic when the pressure's on
49:19And then makes mistakes
49:21And that's why a car that was initially sold
49:24That turned out not to be sold
49:25Wasn't refreshed with the price
49:27The car was that then?
49:28That was a Corsa
49:28Was that only Joe's fault?
49:31Yeah, I really want to make a point about that
49:33Because
49:33This is the car you left the sold label in?
49:35Absolutely, absolutely
49:35It was two of us involved in that car
49:38And I was the only one that stood up and took it on the chin
49:40Did you work with Joe at all on this task, Ruth?
49:43No, I didn't
49:43Why is that?
49:44You kept away from her, did you?
49:45No, not at all
49:46Did you keep her away from her?
49:47No
49:47No
49:47Have you noticed a bit of altercation between these two here?
49:51No, no, no
49:52Not at all
49:52Really?
49:52No, no, no
49:53Oh, right
49:53So the main thing I had to do
49:55As soon as the task started
49:56Was put Joe to me
49:58Because Joe is erratic
49:59And she does need to be told to calm down
50:01Joe even admitted as much
50:02So all through the day
50:04I spent time with Joe
50:05It's like the Joe fan club here, isn't it?
50:07You know
50:07Ansel, name two people
50:12That are going to come back in this boardroom with you today
50:14Two people are Joe and Samuel
50:20Okay
50:23All right
50:24If you all step outside
50:25Ruth, you go back to the house
50:27Thank you
50:27And we'll call you back in later
50:29I love to
50:40I didn't take over, did you, mate?
50:43No, see you later, mate
50:44See you later
50:45They've got it in for her, haven't they?
50:58She's controlling all of them
50:59I mean, she's got MG Rover
51:01Okay
51:02Training directors, if you don't mind
51:05About how to make a profit
51:07Okay
51:07No wonder they went bloody skin
51:09All right
51:12Let's, um, call them back in then
51:14Hello?
51:22Yes, Jenny
51:22Can you send the Throven back in place?
51:24Thank you, sir
51:24You can go through to the boardroom now
51:27Jo
51:48This is what?
51:50Fourth time out of six
51:51Yeah
51:52Is there a message here somewhere?
51:54Um, yeah
51:56The message for me is that
51:57I've been in here three times
51:58Three times I've come out
51:59No, no, four times now
52:01Sorry, four times
52:01What I've summed it up as
52:03Is competition
52:04So that is why
52:05Some people seem to think
52:07That I might be stronger than them
52:09And they simply want to get rid of it
52:10Well, I'll go along with that
52:11If you'd sold anything
52:12Yeah
52:12Or done anything, you know
52:13Samuel
52:15Were your hands in your pockets?
52:19Not a salesman
52:20What did you do?
52:22I contributed with the idea
52:25That
52:25Yeah, I'll tell you what
52:26Tell me you can do me a favour
52:27Shut that book at the moment
52:29I wonder what you can do
52:29Without your notes, alright
52:31Shut the book
52:32Put your pen down
52:33And talk to me
52:34Stop looking at notes, okay
52:35What did you do?
52:36I proposed an idea
52:37Which was the £50 voucher
52:39To actually get people
52:40To come back to us
52:41No one else proposed an idea
52:42I proposed it
52:44And we used
52:44It's one idea
52:45And by the way
52:46It's one idea
52:47And Sir Alan, it worked
52:48I also had a part in choosing
52:49The vehicles that we put on
52:51As manager specials
52:52So what's the special
52:52About your specials?
52:53Well, no
52:54Just in terms of the selection
52:55Of the vehicles
52:56I knew that
52:57The highest selling B car
52:58Was a 206
52:59The highest selling C car
53:01Was a Focus
53:01And the next best selling
53:03B car was a Corsa
53:04And those were the vehicles
53:05That we ultimately chose
53:06Samuel, this is the sixth task
53:09All I hear from you is
53:10You've got ideas
53:11But, you know
53:13Ideas is all one thing
53:14But execution
53:15Did you sell any cars?
53:17No
53:17Right?
53:19On this particular car?
53:20No
53:20Ansel, why shouldn't I fire you?
53:26Sir Alan, this task was about sales
53:28And I closed four sales on the day
53:30And also, in terms of the team
53:32I let everybody have their say
53:33But the final decisions were down to me
53:35The professional there tells me
53:37That if he
53:37I said to him point blank this morning
53:39If you had to pick one of those people to go
53:42You know who he said?
53:43You
53:43That's what he told me
53:49Jo
53:50What's wrong?
53:51What is wrong?
53:53Why is it you're here four times out of six?
53:55Like I say, Sir Alan
53:56It must be competition
53:58You know
53:58What competition?
54:00You haven't done anything
54:00Because people want to get rid of me
54:02For some reason, don't they?
54:03What, do you think they're a terrific threat?
54:04Do you think they're a terrific threat?
54:06I don't know
54:06People are deliberately looking for each other's mistakes now
54:08And competing, you know
54:10By making other people look bad
54:11I don't compete with anybody
54:12I'm in here
54:13Just do the best I possibly can
54:14Playing by a fair game
54:16But the best don't seem to be good enough
54:18Jo
54:18That's the bottom line
54:19The best don't seem to be good enough
54:21Samuel, I've got to say
54:26I'm sorry to say this
54:28But
54:28You have not shown me
54:31You have not excelled
54:33In any way or form
54:34So
54:36As far as I'm concerned
54:38You need to do that
54:43And I will
54:45Then
54:46You need to do that
54:47Okay
54:47I understand
54:48Ansel
54:48You have got a most terrible
54:50Terrible, terrible reference
54:53From the salesman
54:54When they tell me
54:55That you was a bad team leader
54:56I've got to point the finger at you
54:58And Ansel
54:59He told me
55:00That you were the worst
55:01And on that basis
55:05I have to take notice of it
55:08But on the other hand
55:11I've sat here
55:12Four times
55:13In this room
55:14And there is a message
55:16Coming from above
55:17Not that I'm a believer
55:18In the Lord or anything
55:19But I have to listen
55:20To other people
55:22Jo
55:23You've been here too many times
55:24It's a shame
55:26I thought you had more potential
55:28But Jo
55:28I'm sorry to say
55:29This time
55:30You are fired
55:31I'm sort of expecting this
55:37Because I accept the fact
55:38That I've been here four times
55:39But I think what that demonstrates
55:40Is that I've got resilience
55:42I'm a survivor
55:42I'm happy to go out here
55:44On the basis
55:45Of like being crap
55:46But I don't believe
55:47That I am
55:47To be leaving here
55:48Jo
55:48There comes a time
55:50When everybody
55:51Everybody is saying
55:52The same thing
55:53And even me
55:53I will say
55:55You know what
55:56Give it up Alan
55:57Enough's enough
55:58Jo
55:59You're fired
56:01Just that's one more time
56:02Just to give you
56:03The one more last chance
56:04I'm afraid not
56:04No I'm afraid not
56:06That's it
56:06Back to the house now
56:08Enjoy the party
56:25See you guys
56:27Want a shake?
56:28Yeah
56:28It's fine Samuel
56:29It's fine
56:29No problem
56:30Enjoy the rest of the ride
56:31No problem
56:32Too many people
56:58Too many big egos
56:59That are going to all start
57:00To clash now
57:01I think now I'm out of it
57:02This is going to get really raw
57:04I'm upset because
57:09The strategy was just
57:11To be a good person
57:12I'm not going to stop
57:18Being a good person
57:19One job
57:20One job
57:27Now only eight remain
57:30Sir Alan's search for his apprentice
57:34Continues
57:36Next week
57:39You couldn't get a better place for retailing in the whole of this country
57:44Top shop Oxford Street
57:46The candidates get to grips with the glamorous world of high street fashion
57:51That is definitely the way forward
57:52Because I think again it shows off your
57:54If any fucker wants to go head to head
57:58I'll go head to head with them
57:59Do you know why
58:00Because I've got shit on everybody
58:01Who will survive the shop floor
58:04There is only one job going here you know
58:08I'll promise you this
58:09As sure as I've got a hole in my bloody arse
58:11When it gets down to two of you
58:13All these people that are saying nice things about you
58:16Will not
58:16You're fired
