11th May - National weather forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good afternoon.
00:02We've not seen that many spring showers around so far this season, but that will be changing
00:07over the next few days.
00:08We've already seen some heavy showers across the Channel Islands spreading up to parts
00:12of the West Country.
00:13These were initially thundery but have tended to ease before they reached our mainland shores.
00:17Still there are some heavy pulses moving in for parts of Devon and Cornwall.
00:20Once the sunshine really gets going into the afternoon though, we could see some heavy
00:24thundery showers developing once again, primarily for parts of Gloucestershire up into the West
00:28Midlands and southern areas of Wales as well.
00:30A few lighter showers for Northern Ireland, northern and western Scotland.
00:34Out towards the east, it is a drier day to come, fairly fine and sunny, and temperatures responding
00:39to that sun time with highs of 24 to 26 degrees Celsius, very warm for the time of year.
00:45The sunshine is also going to be strong with high UV levels for much of England and Wales
00:50where we've got those sixes and sevens and orange colours.
00:53Out towards the west and the north where there's a touch more cloud in play, UV levels will be
00:56moderate, but skin protection is still advised if you're going to be outside for prolonged
01:00periods of time, UV can still penetrate through the cloud.
01:04As we head into this evening and overnight, some of those heavy showers will rumble on
01:08a little bit for parts of Wales in particular, eventually easing off later on in the night.
01:13The rain will turn heavier for parts of Northern Ireland before it eventually spreads up into
01:17western Scotland as well.
01:19Always drier out towards the east with some clearer spells for the bulk of England and Wales.
01:24Still, it's going to be a mild night for most of us.
01:26Some of us could see temperatures holding up around 14 to 13 degrees Celsius.
01:31A little cooler out towards the north and east, and there will be some low cloud lingering
01:35along coastal districts here first thing, quite misty and murky in places.
01:39It will burn back during the day, but the Northern Isles could see it persisting throughout
01:42a good portion of Monday.
01:44The rain across parts of western Scotland will eventually ease, but some showery outbreaks
01:47are possible for County Antrim, County Down of Northern Ireland.
01:51And we will eventually start to see the showers developing more widely on Monday for England
01:54and Wales.
01:55The focus for some of the heaviest ones, particularly from areas around London, stretching through
02:00the Midlands and up towards Wales around the Cheshire region as well.
02:05These will be hit and miss.
02:06By nature, thunderstorms are scattered, but where they do occur, they will provide some
02:09torrential downpours of rain.
02:12Yes, rain certainly is needed after a dry spring so far, but the torrential downpours could well
02:17provide some localised flooding that it's worth taking care of.
02:21As we head into the evening, we'll continue to see those showers just spread their way
02:24up a little bit further northwards into other areas of north-western England, maybe south-west
02:28Scotland as well.
02:30Nevertheless, that warm air is still in play, and those temperatures will be climbing to
02:34highs at 25 degrees Celsius once again.
02:37Because of the extra cloud that these showers are providing, the highest temperature is probably
02:41stretching a little bit further eastwards now.
02:43So parts of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, down towards East Anglia, seeing those mid-20 degrees Celsius
02:48values.
02:49During the evening period, we will continue to see those thunderstorms rumbling on, but
02:53eventually they will begin to ease their way off.
02:55And into Tuesday, we'll continue to see that general decline in the number of thunderstorms
03:00and showers that we're seeing.
03:02And during the middle part of next week, high pressure will be returning to allow a more
03:06widespread sunny picture to develop once again.
03:09temperatures though remaining into the low mid-20s, so still very warm in that sunshine
03:13when you are out and about.
03:15Do subscribe to the YouTube channel for all the latest updates of how we head over the
03:18next few days, and how those thunderstorms may progress for regions near you as well.
03:23And we'll see you again very soon.
03:25Bye bye.
