00:01Previously on Project Runway, this is an avant-garde challenge.
00:05And there is a twist. Your models will be walking a RAINWAY.
00:09My garment, when she gets wet, the dye's gonna start running out of it.
00:13It's spectacular. It just has to work.
00:15I feel stuck. It's not coming.
00:18The pressure is getting strong.
00:20Welcome to the RAINWAY.
00:23Wow!
00:30What a spectacular RAINWAY today.
00:36So well done.
00:37Sean, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:39Thank you so much.
00:40I love it.
00:41You brought it today, big time.
00:43Heaney, congratulations. You're also the winner of this challenge.
00:47It doesn't feel electric.
00:49Faith, I'm sorry, you're out.
01:00Another challenge down. No immunities anymore, which is very stressful.
01:16We won, Sean.
01:17And we won.
01:18I know.
01:19Two winners this time.
01:20Okay.
01:21We are meeting Tim at the American Girl store, and it's really cool.
01:40Hello.
01:41I had an American Girl doll.
01:43I had Samantha.
01:44They were really cool dolls, so I'm really excited about this challenge.
01:50Good morning, designers.
01:51Good morning, Tim.
01:52Welcome to American Girl Place, New York.
01:55I am delighted to introduce you to Heather Northrup.
01:58Heather is Senior Design Manager at American Girl, and she's been with the brand for 22 years.
02:04Wow.
02:05So she knows everything there is to know about American Girl intimately.
02:08Heather, thank you so much for letting us come.
02:11It's great to have you guys here.
02:12In 1986, we launched the American Girl's collection, a line of historical characters and inspirational stories,
02:17which really come to life through our dolls.
02:20It's through the stories that girls really connect with our characters while learning about history all through a girl's perspective.
02:26So after 28 years, we've freshened the line, and what better way to do that than through fashion.
02:31Agreed.
02:32And now I'm excited to introduce our line, Be Forever.
02:36We have a new line of clothing for girls that takes inspiration from each character's signature looks and weaves them into modern styles for girls today.
02:49So designers, for this challenge, you will each be paired with a Be Forever character, and your model is the young lady who's carrying your character.
03:01Aww.
03:02Your character's time period, style, and story are the point of departure for your inspiration.
03:10You're to create a modern and fashionable look for a young woman.
03:14We are providing you with fabrics that match these doll outfits for you to use, as well as some information on the character along with their books.
03:21And designers, it's completely up to you whether you use the provided fabric or not.
03:25We are going shopping at Mood, where you will have a budget of $150 there.
03:29Okay.
03:30So let's get on with your pairing.
03:32Keeney, you are paired with the doll Samantha, and the model Anita.
03:37Hello.
03:38Amanda, your doll is Addie, and your model is Diabana.
03:44Very nice to meet you.
03:45Alexander, your doll is Kit, and your model is Emma.
03:50Karina, your doll is Josefina, and your model is Mavis.
03:55It's your twin.
03:56Mini me.
03:57Sandia, your doll is Caroline, and your model is Jessica.
04:02Sharkita, your doll is Kaya, and your model is Faith.
04:06Hi.
04:07Sean, your doll is Julie, and your model is Katie.
04:10Little 70s child.
04:12I am excited for this challenge.
04:15It's always interesting doing something completely new and different.
04:18But there's a whole new set of variables coming into play with these kids.
04:23Emily is our last designer.
04:25Your doll is Rebecca, and your model is Caitlin.
04:28Oh.
04:29Sweetie.
04:30All right, designers.
04:31Now that you have your models and your Be Forever character,
04:34it's important for you to get to know your character.
04:36Feel free to look around the store and see what American Girl is all about.
04:40And designers, this is a one-day challenge,
04:42and you will have 30 minutes here to take your model's measurements
04:46and to sketch in the store, all right?
04:48I've never made kids clothes before.
04:50This is going to be interesting.
04:53Head off, everyone.
04:54Let's go.
04:55Dun-da-da.
04:56Do you know the story about Rebecca?
04:57I'm on the last one.
04:58Yeah.
04:59Oh.
05:0021.
05:01Tell me as much as you can tell me about her.
05:03Because she doesn't respect the fact that she lives in a big house with servants.
05:07Well, she pretty much has everything for her, right?
05:10Yeah.
05:11Oh, it's like a story.
05:131970s San Francisco.
05:15I definitely have a nice time period, a colorful time.
05:19It's really great to kind of incorporate these things into a children's wear challenge.
05:22She does, like, a lot of sentimental things because she lost her mother.
05:26And those flowers that she's wearing in her hair was her mother's favorite flower.
05:30Hmm.
05:31Probably the most challenging thing about making children's clothing
05:34is that I don't have a relationship with any children.
05:36I don't know what children do.
05:37I can't even tell what people's ages are.
05:39Now, they could be five or fifteen.
05:41I don't know.
05:42So, I don't know what nine-year-olds like to wear.
05:44I just don't.
05:45I'm super excited.
05:46Okay, I'll see you then.
05:48Bye.
05:49Bye.
05:50Kaya is a little horse riding diva.
05:56She pretty much cares for her sister who's blind.
06:00With her having such a large amount of responsibility, I want to make her a little party dress.
06:05And I want to make a French vest to go on top with detailed stitching.
06:12All right, designers.
06:14Time is up.
06:15Follow me to move.
06:20Oh, that's cute.
06:22I think this would be good for kids.
06:24My doll is Rebecca.
06:25She is the daughter of Jewish immigrants from Russia.
06:29Right off the bat, I'm thinking every little girl loves that twirly ballerina skirt.
06:34I also love making sweaters for little girls.
06:36So, I start thinking, oh, that would be cool to pair it with like a shrunken sweater and
06:41like play with the proportions.
06:42Not too young.
06:43Not too old.
06:46Designers, you have 15 minutes.
06:4815 minutes, everyone.
06:55It's too cute.
06:56Gotta funk it up a little.
06:58I'm just choosing a bit more manly colors.
07:01I'm making an overall jumpsuit and then a light blue denim jacket.
07:07I think that the lightness and this airy feel about it is San Francisco in the 70s meets today.
07:13So, I'm happy with it.
07:15So much.
07:16Designers, you have one minute remaining to shop.
07:19One minute, everybody.
07:20Get 147, 76.
07:21At least I can do this help, right?
07:22Thank you so much.
07:23All right, designers, let's head back to the workroom.
07:24Thank you, Lord.
07:25Thank you, Lord.
07:26Thank you, Lord.
07:27Thank you, Lord.
07:28Thank you, Lord.
07:29Thank you, Lord.
07:30Thank you, Lord.
07:31Thank you, Lord.
07:32We get back into the workroom and there are all these dolls staring at us.
07:48And then we need those tiny mannequins right behind them.
07:51It's a little bit different than we're used to.
07:59She's gonna watch me work.
08:09The kids' bodies are so different.
08:10Real different from each other, yeah.
08:12It's so weird that there's not really that many, like, darts or anything either because
08:16it's, like, straight.
08:18The difference in designing for kids opposed to women is their frame is smaller.
08:24You know, it's not as many curves.
08:26So, this is gonna be interesting.
08:28To be honest, I don't know what I'm doing.
08:32We had Cabbage Patch.
08:33That's the generation I'm from.
08:34And my mom would make us Cabbage Patch because we couldn't afford the name brand ones.
08:38So, my mom, like, learned how to make them and painted the faces.
08:41Have you done kids' wear before?
08:43Never.
08:44I'm just, like, shrink everything.
08:45Yeah, just shrink everything.
08:47Have you done kids' wear?
08:48Just once or twice.
08:49Do you make your daughter clothes?
08:50Mm-hmm.
08:51Cool.
08:52I bet she has the coolest wardrobe.
08:54Thanks.
08:56I'm a little worried that Emily has experience making children's clothing.
09:00She has a huge advantage in this and this could be really bad for the rest of us.
09:05Coming up on Project Runway.
09:06I could've bought this at Kids R Us.
09:07It'll look cheap and tawdry.
09:08Oh, my God.
09:09At this point, I don't know what to do.
09:10I fear this will flop.
09:11I could've bought this at Kids R Us.
09:13It'll look cheap and tawdry.
09:15Oh, my God.
09:16At this point, I don't know what to do.
09:18I fear this will flop.
09:20On Project Runway.
09:21Oh, my God.
09:22My pleasure.
09:23The challenge is to design a modern look for a young girl based on one of the American
09:44girl dolls.
09:45And I was pretty skeptical when we first got the challenge.
09:48At this point, I'm really excited.
09:51What I'm going to do is to create my own print
09:55with multiple cottons.
09:58It sounds like a lot, but it's going to look really cool
10:01when it's all put together.
10:05I'm making a houndstooth coat, and I
10:09need a dress to go under it.
10:12I want to create something classy, but flirty, girly,
10:16but with my design aesthetic being really structured.
10:22I'm making a jumpsuit.
10:24It has this ruffle peplum on the side,
10:27and applique of elements that remind me of sailing.
10:33How is everyone?
10:35Good.
10:36Good.
10:36Well, I'm eager to check in with you and see how you're doing.
10:39Hey, Sean.
10:39Hello, Tim.
10:40So how are you doing with this challenge?
10:43I'm doing OK, I think.
10:44I have Julie, who's straight out of the 70s.
10:46She's quite adventurous and sporty.
10:48So I wanted to do a jumpsuit.
10:50OK.
10:51So I have it in this print, and then the denim jacket's
10:55out of this blue.
10:56It's adorable.
10:58It's going to have kind of like a cutoff jacket feel about it.
11:02And the fringe, I'm unsure, but I think it adds a little bit
11:05of playfulness to it.
11:06Remove the fringe.
11:08You've got it.
11:10Emily, I'm so happy that you bought that knit.
11:13It makes me smile.
11:15So who is your doll, and what are you making for her?
11:19My doll is Rebecca.
11:21Her family is super traditional from Russia.
11:23OK.
11:24I have a daughter, and she really loves to play dress up.
11:27So I wanted to make her like a big circle skirt.
11:30And I'm going to do like different layers of tulle.
11:32Fun.
11:33You know, since her parents are very proper,
11:36she would probably need to be more covered up.
11:37So the sweater seemed to make sense with it.
11:40My one note to you for the fitting, look at the scale
11:45and the proportion of the skirt, and see
11:47how it looks on someone her size.
11:49You want her to look like a little girl,
11:51and not like she's playing dress up.
11:53Hi, Keeney.
11:53Hi, Tim.
11:54I'm eager to hear what you're doing.
11:55My doll that I got is Samantha.
11:57She's an orphan child, and got adopted by her grandmother.
12:01What are you creating for her?
12:02I made this jacket ready.
12:12I get rid of the white dress.
12:14This is a make it work moment for you.
12:16Yes.
12:17Hi.
12:18Hi, Tim.
12:18How are you?
12:19I'm good.
12:20My doll's name is Kaya, and she's a horse riding little diva.
12:25Oh.
12:25And she cares for her little sister who's blind.
12:29Oh my god, these stories.
12:30She's definitely the strong person in her family.
12:33And I'm making her a vest, but she's obsessed with her fringe.
12:36There'll be tons and tons of fringe on the vest.
12:40Yeah.
12:41Talk to me more about it.
12:42I'm going to put fringe here.
12:44Like, I'll attach it here, and then cut it,
12:46so it'll kind of cascade down.
12:47Then the back will be fringed, and I made it
12:49a little shorter in the back.
12:54I think it's going to look cheap and tawdry.
12:57OK.
12:58I believe it's not going to be a good look.
13:01I know that Tim's just making sure that I stay in the game.
13:04I'm so appreciative of that.
13:06But you have to leave a little room for magic.
13:08Marina.
13:09Hey, Tim.
13:10How are you?
13:10I really like my ideas, so.
13:12Good.
13:12Excellent.
13:13Who is your doll?
13:14I have Josefina, who's from 1824.
13:18She has a lot of these tiering elements in most of her clothing.
13:21So I'm creating tiering of these.
13:24I'm going to create a bunch of these
13:26and just layer them over the skirt.
13:28Do you think it's going to look too mature?
13:29I mean, kids now are really proud of it.
13:31I know.
13:32If you execute those tiers beautifully,
13:36I think you're going to have a look that you'll be very proud of.
13:39Cool.
13:40Hello, Sandhya.
13:41Hi, Tim.
13:42So my doll is Caroline.
13:44She was born in 1802.
13:46What she wants to be the most is to be captain of her own ship someday.
13:50And I came up with this jumpsuit with elements of sailing to it.
13:55With this pattern, when I look at it from a distance,
13:57it blends in.
13:58And you know, it does not look like a patch or like a spot on top of it.
14:03It doesn't?
14:04When I look at it, it looks like it's meant to be there.
14:08You know, I feel as though I don't do you a service
14:12because, I'll just be blunt, I have serious difficulty
14:16understanding a lot of your color relationships
14:19and your proportions, and the judges keep loving your work.
14:23Do you feel good about and confident about your direction?
14:27I feel really happy.
14:28Carry on with this.
14:32Designers, I am very excited by what's going on in this room.
14:36Models are coming in soon.
14:38I will see you tomorrow.
14:39Thank you, everyone.
14:40Bye-bye.
14:43I think I might use this red.
14:45I like that fabric.
14:46Yeah.
14:46I want to play with this print, that's what.
14:48I'm feeling a little on and off about this checker fabric.
14:51I don't want to use it because it's going
14:53to look like a little doll dress.
14:55But then again, that's all I have to work with.
15:03Yay!
15:04Hey, girls.
15:06Aw, that looks cute.
15:08Cute.
15:09That's really, I like that.
15:17Let me see what it looks like if I do it higher.
15:20I'm feeling really happy and confident about what I'm doing.
15:23So this is going to be like a dressy jumpsuit.
15:25Instead of doing the appliques, I'm just doing the buttons now.
15:29Just be careful.
15:29There are pins in there, OK?
15:30Yeah.
15:31OK.
15:32You want to go in the room and try it on?
15:33Sure.
15:34I put the dress on her.
15:35When she comes out, I feel like it needs more pizzazz.
15:39I'm trying to think, am I going to put the jacket on?
15:40Am I going to leave it off?
15:42I just want to see the difference between a more poofy silhouette.
15:45I like it.
15:46And I need to figure something out fast.
15:48See, I made a vest because Kaya loves her French.
15:51To see something I made on this little body is just, it's so cute.
15:55High five.
15:56I think we're all set.
15:57All righty.
15:58I will see you tomorrow.
16:01Have a good night's rest now.
16:03Think winner.
16:04Yes.
16:11Shari, it's so quiet today.
16:14Want me to talk?
16:15No.
16:16I'm kind of enjoying it.
16:17It's like a vacation.
16:18Oh, you're so shady.
16:21Initially, I came in thinking I'm going to make friends with everyone.
16:24I have a sense that a few of them don't like me much.
16:28I do feel bad, and it hurts.
16:30But I will just try and make it work.
16:39That's beautiful.
16:41My jacket is complete, but my dress needs more pizzazz.
16:49So I decide to make a skirt.
16:51It's real flirty, real fun, girly.
16:53And I feel like that's more of a wow piece, and more me.
17:00As each hour passes, I'm starting to realize
17:03I have a lot of work to do, and my eyes are bigger
17:07than my hands can sew.
17:10An hour.
17:10I'm just worried at this point, you know,
17:13that I might not finish it.
17:15Somebody remind me why am I doing this.
17:18I am in a good place with my design.
17:21And I've almost sewn the entire jumpsuit.
17:24But I can feel that my look is missing something.
17:27All right, guys.
17:28It's time to go.
17:29But I don't know what to do to kind of change it at this point.
17:34Let's go.
17:35Let's get some sleep, Sandhya.
17:40You'll feel better in the morning.
17:42We get home, and Sandhya is really, really upset.
17:46She's trying to be nice to everybody,
17:47and she's just not getting it back.
17:49Maybe a little compassion would help.
17:52Just a little compassion would help.
17:54Just a little compassion would help.
17:56Good morning.
18:23Good morning.
18:24Morning. How are you?
18:26I'm good.
18:28To show my weakness, that's not me.
18:31I am someone who cries in the night
18:34and then wakes up next morning with a smile.
18:38Every day is a new opportunity,
18:40and I will make the most of it today.
18:49Go ahead.
18:51Wow.
18:52I desperately need to finish my dress.
18:54There is no time to breathe, think, do anything but work.
19:01How does it look?
19:02It looked good.
19:02With the vest.
19:03Yeah, I'm putting this paste sign on the back
19:06to kind of...
19:07Good morning, designers.
19:12Good morning.
19:13It's a big day.
19:14Your models will come in soon.
19:15You will have an hour to send them
19:17to the Philip B. Hair Studio
19:19and the Mary Kay Color Design Studio, all right?
19:23Use the Aldo Styling Wall very strategically.
19:27All right, good.
19:28I'll be back.
19:30Here comes our dolls.
19:33Good morning.
19:34Hello.
19:35Hello.
19:36What's the song you wrote?
19:37So many shoes.
19:39Oh, those are so cute.
19:40Let me do one more of these
19:42and then we'll put you in your dress.
19:44Okay.
19:45Are you excited?
19:46Yeah, I am.
19:47It's so stressful.
19:48I have one hour to finish
19:51and then when you have little kids in the workroom,
19:54you have to remember that you still need to be nice.
19:56You can step into it
19:57and then I'll sew the rest of it.
19:59You did it, Karina?
19:59No, no, I didn't.
20:01It's not even near done.
20:02There's huge gaps in the back.
20:08So you ladies excited?
20:10Yes.
20:11I can tell.
20:12Good morning.
20:13Welcome to Philip B. Salon.
20:14Thanks.
20:15She's got some gorgeous curls going on.
20:17I think if we just complete them.
20:19I have the perfect product for that, the Maui Waui,
20:21to keep her curl also a little bouncier and good looking.
20:24I want it to look like a side bang
20:28and then maybe like a braid.
20:30I like the idea with the bangs to the side
20:32and then we cool very soft polinter
20:34with the jet set spray.
20:35Oh my God, that looks so cute.
20:39Ha.
20:41Smiling makes you pretty.
20:42I guess we'll just make her a little bit fresher,
20:45do like a little bit gloss.
20:46Pretty as a picture.
20:48Perfect.
20:49Tell me.
20:50It's going to go really clean coverage
20:52and rolls and sheets.
20:53We could always use a little bit of moisturizer.
20:56Okay.
20:56Give a little sunshine on your cheeks.
20:58How about that?
20:59Yeah.
21:00Okay.
21:03Okay, smile.
21:04Okay.
21:07So pretty.
21:09Hold the skirt up for me.
21:10I cannot wait to see her walking on the runway.
21:14I think with the whole look put together,
21:17she'll do great.
21:18Perfect.
21:21No way.
21:22Designers, in ten minutes,
21:25you and your models and I
21:26are going down to the runway.
21:28Yay!
21:29All right, ten minutes, everyone.
21:31Perfect.
21:34In our last looks,
21:36I have one panel to sew onto the back
21:38so Mavis doesn't have a huge gap in her dress.
21:40and then let me go get some bread really quick.
21:43I'm nervous going to the runway.
21:45I'm really nervous.
21:47Designers and models,
21:48this is it.
21:49We're going down to the runway.
21:51Yay!
21:52Follow me, everybody.
21:53Everyone's looks at this point
21:55are so different.
21:57And as always,
21:58you never know what the judges are looking for.
22:00Anybody could be going home.
22:01That was the fastest runway exit ever.
22:14Hello, designers.
22:16Hi.
22:16Welcome to the runway.
22:18As you know, in fashion,
22:19one day you're in,
22:20and the next day,
22:21you're out.
22:22There are eight of you here,
22:22and after tonight,
22:23there will be seven.
22:24For this challenge,
22:25each of you were paired
22:26with an American Girl doll.
22:28You were to create
22:29a modern young girl's look
22:30inspired by your American Girl character.
22:33You were to use her story
22:35and her history
22:35as your inspiration.
22:37All right,
22:38let's say hello to our judges.
22:40First, we have
22:40acclaimed fashion designer,
22:41Zach Posen.
22:42Hello, designers.
22:43Hi, Zach.
22:45Creative director
22:46for Mericlare magazine,
22:47Nina Garcia.
22:48Hi, everyone.
22:49And star of Mad Men,
22:51Elizabeth Moss.
22:53Welcome.
22:53Hi.
22:54Hello, designers.
22:55And senior design manager
22:57at American Girl,
22:58Heather Northrop.
23:00Welcome.
23:00Good to see you again.
23:02And of course,
23:02we have Tim Gunn here
23:03for the Runway Show.
23:04And as you know,
23:05he is your mentor
23:06and will not be judging your looks.
23:08It is an anonymous runway show,
23:09which means we, the judges,
23:10do not know which designer
23:12created which look.
23:13All right,
23:14let's start the show.
23:22She has all the energy
23:24in the world,
23:25and she just makes
23:26the dress look
23:27perfect and amazing.
23:33She sells it,
23:35and I'm just really happy.
23:39Saved by the model.
23:45It looks polished.
23:47It looks clean.
23:48It looks like
23:48that this could be sold
23:50in the store today.
23:51My technique and construction
24:00are 100% in this garment,
24:02and I feel confident
24:04that I'm not going home.
24:12She looks super happy,
24:14super comfortable.
24:14She just sticks that pose
24:17at the end of the runway,
24:18and it's awesome.
24:20Those fabrics just mix perfect.
24:24I can imagine my nieces wearing that.
24:27I think it looks great.
24:29I'm super confident.
24:30Emma is absolutely adorable.
24:42She's that, like,
24:43quirkiness that the outfit needs.
24:48Those prints look cute to get.
24:50I feel like they're really cute.
24:51I could totally see a girl like Emma
24:55wearing that quirky, printed outfit.
25:05I'm actually loving the vest.
25:06It actually turned out better
25:07than I thought.
25:08She looks so cute.
25:10I mean, she is working it.
25:15Shari, you did such a good job.
25:16She looks rad.
25:20So far, it's looking pretty good,
25:22and I'm proud of myself.
25:24Yay!
25:25She's making my look look even better.
25:36She's having fun.
25:38She looks like a doll.
25:39She's so cute.
25:45She is the American girl,
25:47and she's working it.
25:55She's giving that sass.
25:59She's strutting her stuff.
26:01You could tell she felt like
26:02a million bucks on that stage.
26:06I want that jacket.
26:10She could be an American girl doll,
26:12and, of course, her dress looks like
26:14it could be an American girl dress.
26:16I think my look is really polished.
26:29It's different, I feel like,
26:31than everybody else's.
26:32I was a little bit nervous about the taffeta being really wrinkly,
26:40but it doesn't look bad, so I'm fine.
26:42If I call your name, please step forward.
26:52Amanda, please step forward.
26:54Alexander, please step forward.
26:57Congratulations.
26:58Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round.
27:01You can leave the runway.
27:01Thank you very much, guys.
27:09The six of you have the highest
27:11and the lowest scores.
27:13One of you will be named the winner,
27:15and one of you will be out.
27:24All right, let's bring out your models.
27:25Hi, girls.
27:32Hi.
27:33Hi.
27:34All of you did a fantastic job today.
27:37Sean, tell us about your doll and your look.
27:39Julia is a doll from the 70s.
27:42Her mom owns a thrift store,
27:43so I kind of imagine that her mom
27:45kind of just cut her a little vest,
27:46and she's got a little jumpsuit underneath,
27:48which is in this almost Liberty 70s print.
27:52It ain't groovy, baby.
27:53I don't think this look is okay at all,
27:56to be honest with you.
27:57To me, it looks like a McCall's pattern book,
28:00sew-it-yourself kind of thing.
28:02Not for a project runway designer.
28:04I didn't hate it, really,
28:06but the thing about the 70s,
28:07it was so gray was the crazy colors they had,
28:11colors no one should ever wear,
28:12and they looked amazing,
28:14and so I feel like maybe if it had
28:16a little bit more fun there.
28:17I like the use of the silhouette,
28:19which is a popular silhouette from the 70s,
28:21the jumpsuit,
28:22but with Bohemian chic,
28:23such an influence with girls right now,
28:25there would have been so many other places
28:27that you could have gone
28:27that would have been a lot more fun.
28:30Karina, tell us about your doll inspiration
28:32and your look.
28:34We had Josefina,
28:35who's from New Mexico in the 1800s.
28:38When we were looking at all the clothing,
28:40I noticed that she wears a lot of tiered skirts,
28:43so I wanted to bring that inspiration.
28:45Mavis, can you do a spin for us?
28:47There's a surprise under these flaps,
28:49because I saw it.
28:50When you walked, they were yellow.
28:52I thought the inspiration from the outfit
28:54was a really great update.
28:56The little red hat,
28:56it sort of reminded me of Annie Oakley,
28:58and it was really fun.
29:00I really love this outfit.
29:02I love the graphic element of the dress
29:05and the colors that you chose.
29:09Sandhya, tell us about your American Girl doll
29:11and your look.
29:12My American Girl doll is Caroline.
29:15She was born in 1802.
29:18Her father is a shipmaker,
29:20and her secret dream
29:23is to be the captain of her own ship.
29:25She's going on a yacht,
29:26and it's like a sailing jumpsuit.
29:29Jessica, what do you think about this look?
29:30I think this is very cute.
29:32It's nice and comfortable.
29:34You know, I think for, like, a one-year-old,
29:36that would be great,
29:37but not this age range that we have,
29:39which is 8 to 12 years old.
29:41Imagine a 12-year-old in that.
29:43Oh, no.
29:44How do you get into that?
29:45Is there a zipper in the back?
29:46Can we have a look at the back?
29:46Yes, there's, like, a snap.
29:48I mean, even there,
29:49it looks like a onesie for a baby.
29:51You know, where you change the diaper,
29:53you just open the back.
29:54It doesn't look age-appropriate.
29:56Um, I beg to defer,
29:59but I appreciate your feedback.
30:02She looks like a circus flamingo.
30:05In the world we're living in,
30:06a 9-year-old wearing this
30:07would feel a little uncomfortable.
30:09It's just not really mature enough
30:12or cool enough or modern enough.
30:14He needs...
30:15My model is Anita,
30:16and we got Samantha.
30:19Basically, her story is set in 1904.
30:23She's an orphan child
30:24that gets adopted by her grandmother,
30:26and she basically has all this money,
30:30free time, with no one to play with.
30:32I kind of took that inspiration
30:34and wanted to make it now.
30:35I'm thinking,
30:36a little girl with a credit card,
30:37what can she do?
30:38She's gonna go and find herself a tailor
30:40to make things that she wants.
30:43I'm in love with this.
30:44I think it's fantastic.
30:46You said that she probably
30:47has a credit card,
30:48and I know where she went,
30:49straight to Chanel for kids.
30:50Yeah.
30:51When she took the jacket off,
30:53that dress,
30:54will you just take this jacket off for us?
30:57Ooh, I love the cutouts on the neck.
30:59What a stunning dress.
31:00Beautiful.
31:00So she went to Chanel,
31:01then she went to Westwood.
31:04I love how it connects to the character,
31:06and I think that mismatched plaid is perfect.
31:09It's a party dress.
31:10It's fun,
31:11but it's also super modern and cool
31:13with the cutouts in the back.
31:15Again, I would wear,
31:16are you gonna be making these
31:17in 31-year-old friends now?
31:19Oh, no.
31:20Only Samantha would have
31:22a couturier working for her.
31:27Thank you, Keeney.
31:28Thank you, Anita.
31:30Shakira.
31:30Okay, my doll's name is Kaya.
31:32My model is Faith.
31:34I would say she's like
31:35a really, really strong little girl,
31:36so I wanted to take her
31:38from having so much responsibility
31:40to like a little party
31:41with her girlfriend.
31:42She loves fringe,
31:43so I had to make her a vest
31:44that has fringe.
31:45Faith, what do you think of your look?
31:47I actually love the fringe,
31:49and I'll definitely wear this
31:50to like going out with my friends.
31:52So cute.
31:53If I saw Faith on the street,
31:55I would ask her where she got this.
31:56I think it's fantastic.
31:59Listen, I don't know of a little girl
32:01or a little boy
32:02that don't love fringe.
32:04It's just universal.
32:06I think this really is
32:08one of the most updated looks,
32:11and I do think this particular look
32:14is very youthful,
32:16and it's very age-appropriate.
32:19Emily, tell us about your doll
32:20inspiration and your look.
32:22My doll was Rebecca.
32:23My little girl loves to wear twirly skirts,
32:25so I knew I wanted to make one of those.
32:27There is no joy in this outfit.
32:30Really?
32:31The crochet top is very sweet,
32:34but the colors are very dark,
32:37and overall she looks very sad.
32:40Zach, what about you?
32:42Oy vey.
32:43Oy vey!
32:44You know, it still feels like
32:45it might be stuck
32:46in the shuttle in Russia.
32:47I wanted to see a little bit
32:49of Rebecca's magic.
32:50I mean, Rebecca's one of my favorite
32:52American girl characters.
32:53I wish it was almost more
32:54just the sweater all the way down
32:56as like a little dress
32:57or just the fun tulle.
33:00I think together maybe
33:01is a little bit confusing for me.
33:03And what was that sort of
33:04supposed to be?
33:06She's playing dress up.
33:07She's an aspiring actress, so.
33:09Do you love wearing that on your face?
33:11I can tell she's kind of over it, huh?
33:13Thank you, Emily.
33:16Thank you, Caitlin.
33:18Designers, we've heard what you had to say.
33:20Now we're going to take a closer look
33:22at the garments,
33:24and then we're going to have a little chat,
33:25and then I'm going to call you back
33:26to the runway.
33:27Now you can leave the runway.

34:24Hi, Tim.
34:25Hi, girls.
34:28Let's talk about the top three.
34:29Faith, we'll have you come forward
34:31wearing Sharquita.
34:33It's great,
34:33and I love that she used
34:35the fabric provided.
34:36I love it, too.
34:37I like the fringe
34:38and the cut of the back
34:39of that vest.
34:40It's just great.
34:40Mm-hmm.
34:41Gorgeous.
34:43Mavis, you can come forward
34:44wearing Karina.
34:46This is so fabulous.
34:47So cool.
34:48Is this one piece or two?
34:49It's one piece.
34:50It is a one-piece dress.
34:51So cool.
34:52So cute.
34:53It's also nice to see
34:54something graphic
34:55that has movement to it.
34:58Anita,
34:59you want to come forward now
35:00wearing Keeney?
35:01Yes.
35:02I love this.
35:03I love this, too.
35:04It feels like something
35:05American Girl would sell.
35:06Well, it's great.
35:07It's aspirational.
35:08Yes.
35:09This is every young girl's dream.
35:11Yeah.
35:13Let's move on
35:14to who's going home today.
35:16Katie, why don't you step forward?
35:17Katie's wearing Sean.
35:19Sean and I had a long discussion
35:20about 70s
35:21and about what to do,
35:22and he was trying
35:23to avoid cliches.
35:24But it is a bit boring,
35:26this.
35:28Caitlin's wearing Emily.
35:29Mm-hmm.
35:30I mean, there are parts
35:31of this that I really like.
35:33The skirt part
35:34is what falls short for me.
35:35I think you need
35:35to define her waist
35:36and get it a little shorter,
35:38make it a little more fun
35:39and party-like.
35:40If this was in a different color,
35:41it would change completely.
35:43I like how she matched
35:44her stripes in the back
35:45of the sweater.
35:46It's really nice.
35:47It's a grown-up sweater.
35:49Yeah.
35:49And it doesn't feel very...
35:51Now.
35:52Now.
35:54Jessica, do you want
35:55to step forward
35:55wearing a slander?
35:57Do you really like this?
35:59I think this spoils it
36:00a little bit.
36:01Why?
36:01Because it feels like
36:02a short little tutu
36:03around your waist?
36:04Yeah.
36:05Because you're out
36:06of the tutu time,
36:07you know?
36:08Right.
36:08When I saw it,
36:09it was yoga-gaba-gaba
36:10for me.
36:11I'm with Nina, though,
36:12and I actually would prefer
36:14this over Emily's.
36:16This looks somewhere
36:17in the realm
36:18of what a kid
36:19might want to buy.
36:20I agree.
36:21For me, the opposite.
36:22I would for sure
36:23rather put my kid
36:24in that than in that.
36:25That just looks silly.
36:29So we've made our decision.
36:33All right.
36:33Let's bring them back out.
36:37Designers,
36:38one of you
36:40will be named the winner,
36:41and one of you
36:42will be out.
36:46and one of you
36:52will be out.
36:58Keeney,
36:59you are the winner
37:01of this challenge.
37:03Congratulations.
37:05Two wins in a row.
37:06I'm in the double-win club.
37:07Keeney,
37:10Sharquita,
37:11Karina,
37:12you're all in.
37:12You can leave the runway.
37:15Yay!
37:18Two in a row.
37:19Eat that.
37:21I'm so excited.
37:23So, so happy.
37:26You won again.
37:27Did you win?
37:29Two in a row.
37:30Sean,
37:35you're in.
37:38You can leave the runway.
37:45Sandhya,
37:47Emily,
37:48one of you
37:48will be out.
37:52Emily,
37:53you're in.
38:00You can leave the runway.
38:11Sandhya,
38:11I'm sorry.
38:12That means you're out.
38:13I'm so proud of coming here.
38:15I lived a dream every day.
38:17I had a lot of fun.
38:19Auf Wiedersehen.
38:22Thank you so much.
38:24I really like what I did today.
38:26I did justice to what was given.
38:28Actually,
38:29I'm happy that I went on something that I believed in.
38:34Awesome.
38:35Yeah.
38:38We know how talented you are.
38:39We're going to hear a lot more from you.
38:43So I have to send you to the work room to clean up your space.
38:45And I have to thank you for all the love that I got from you.
38:49We'll miss you, Sandhya.
38:51Bye.
38:51Bye.
38:51Love you all.
38:53I think all Indians would be rooting for me.
38:55So it is for every girl that has been told that she cannot do something just because she's a girl.
39:03It's for all of us.
39:07Next time on Project Runway.
39:09We're sending you to Washington Square Park to find your client, Model Muse.
39:15Would you be interested in being my model?
39:17No?
39:17Okay.
39:18I'm leaving New York.
39:19No?
39:19Okay.
39:20No, no, no, no.
39:23This challenge has got the best of me.
39:24I'm stuck.
39:25This is one of the most hideous garments I have ever seen.
39:29I don't know why I'm going to get.
39:30I'm actually excited to have a real woman challenge.
39:33Oh, my God.
39:34You bust a zipper.
39:35Can I speak to Tim for a second?
39:37Tim Gunn saved her once.
39:38Does he really need to save her again?
39:40Oh, my God.
39:41Oh, my God.
39:41Oh, my God.
39:47Oh, my God.
