01:40Aw, look how cute.
01:52When we step into Juliet, it's literally a table set for just us.
01:55It's so pretty.
01:56So, I'm still expecting someone else to walk in with like bolts of fabric and say design.
02:02Design there's croissants and coffee. It's just really relaxing. It's the ninth challenge
02:08Number nine, I barely made the cake
02:15Yeah, I spoke with New Balance their design directors there
02:18I just told them I wanted to be like the versatile sweater
02:22They love it. They love the top. They were like it's so clever
02:25I mean essentially if the jacket was amazing the pants had a bit of work in that the top was like
02:32Quite horrible. Okay, so this is completely throwing me about today's challenge. Yeah, me too. No idea
02:37Well, it doesn't seem like there's a catch right now. Not yet. Not yet. It's probably everywhere. We know it's a catch somewhere
02:46Good morning everyone
02:50Game's up brunch is over. It's time to work
02:54Well, you know, we didn't just send you here for a delicious brunch
02:58I hope that this experience has been lovely
03:02and
03:03Civilized relaxed because those qualities describe the woman you're going to be designing for
03:09She is a modern southern woman and more specifically. She is the Belk customer
03:21This challenge is ideal for me being a resident of the South
03:25I see this woman every day every moment
03:29Well, I want you to know some things about her that will be very essential to your success with this challenge
03:36She dresses vibrantly and expressively and she's always fashionably put together
03:42She knows how to use accessories and she loves color and anything with feminine details
03:48You may create a day look or an evening look and you have one day for this challenge
03:53Of course
03:54Of course
03:55Of course
03:56You will have 30 minutes to sketch here and then we're going shopping at mood where you have suggested spending of
04:02200 to 250 dollars and your sketching time is going to start right now
04:18Coming from a family that's from New Orleans. I'm very inspired by the environment and water
04:22So I immediately started thinking that I want to do something that's blue
04:25And I want the print to be the focal point in the front of the dress because I feel prints on my strong suit
04:34I am sketching various options in tailored jackets, and I'm thinking a lot about color
04:40But I'm also really thinking about how not to make this look mother of the bride
04:45Designers time is up. All right. Let's head off to mood
04:52There is a southern department store out of all of the remainder designers
04:58I actually still live in the heart of the south half of them probably never even been to the salad
05:04Designers you will have 30 minutes here at mood. You know your suggested spending is 200 to 250 dollars on your go bank debit card
05:11And remember it's the modern southern woman. So your time starts now
05:16I
05:21Like I like these but they look like cows
05:23I immediately go to the silk section because I know I want to work in that fabric that drapes really well
05:29I see this black and white graphic print. It looks great. It looks so beautiful. I'm really happy that I find it
05:40Designers you have five minutes remaining five minutes everyone I
05:45I couldn't find the right fabrics for the suit. I wanted to do and I completely redesigned my modern southern woman
05:51I just went towards a dress that'll look modern and southern with the plaid
05:57Designers time is up
05:59Time's up everyone you need to be at the register, please
06:04Thank you
06:06Thank you at checkout. I look around and so many of us have the same colors
06:12But he else has plaid the same colors, too
06:15Yeah, Alexander had picked out this great plaid fabric that
06:21Could be too similar to my dress
06:24This is a real problem. I'm absolutely petrified because I have no idea if this is gonna work or not
06:32This week our challenge is to design for the modern southern woman being the belk girl
06:42All right designers
06:44I want you to welcome belk's executive vice president of private brands John Thomas
06:50Welcome to the workroom. Thank you very much. John has a little bit of extra dazzle for this challenge
06:56At belk we've been very happy to be a part of your runway looks each week
07:00What we're really excited about is that the winning look will be produced and sold at belk and at belk.com
07:06Oh my god
07:07What an opportunity for each of you. I would love to have my dress sold and built at home. Are you excited about this?
07:14Very. I would really kill to have that chance. Best of luck. I can't wait to see what you create. What a great opportunity
07:19Designers get to work and make it work. See you later everyone
07:22Bye
07:26What are you making?
07:32Straight jacket for myself make two of them that play it look like they need cowboy boots to go with it
07:38That's how I feel. I feel like a woman in my family. They're not gonna throw some polyester plaid dress
07:43I don't see anybody in Alabama walking around in plaid dresses. These are not farm boys. They're people that live in cities
07:49This is horrible this stereotypical southern woman that people up north have in their mind
07:54It'd be nice to be in the top. I've been safe four times now
07:58Having been safe so many times maybe I should not use a print and show the judges that hey
08:03I am NOT just a print girl color is something that I love too
08:07Maybe I should just do a really minimal dress and just move forward like that
08:11I'm gonna check in with each of you
08:19Well, this isn't a shrinking violet. No, it's not
08:25So talk to me basically building a bodice first, okay, and then I'm gonna drape all this over it and we're talking evening
08:34Day go for it. Thanks. I love this textile
08:41I think some knockout is it gonna knock me out or the judges?
08:46Why are you so filled with self-doubt? It's very very stressful if you try something new if you take a risk
08:52You don't know what it's gonna look like all that you can do is do something that you absolutely believe in
08:57Thank you. Thank you Braden. How are you Justin? Good. Good. I'm making a two-piece
09:02Grammar. Can I just tell you one concern that I have? Yes
09:06This color combination. Mm-hmm. Is it too much like Halloween?
09:10If you use this fabric alone, yes, the color is going to read as coral which is a very sophisticated color
09:18I only have two yards of the material. I need to make it work. Otherwise, I may be going home
09:27How's Kate you always tell me let the fabric tell you what it wants to do you have to listen to it
09:32Yeah, this is like I feel like the first time where I've actually just meditated on the fabric and been like what do you want to do?
09:38I'm crazy about this color great. Glad you like it. What are you creating?
09:43My initial idea was to create something that could go from day to night
09:47But when I saw this fabric it screams night more than this day is night, right? I'm just inclined to say
09:54Carry on with it. Hey Jeremy. Hey Tim. So how are you feeling about this challenge?
09:58Excited to be working on a tailored jacket to be honest a little confused about what I'm going to put under it
10:04If you can be as fresh and inventive with this dress as you are being with this jacket, it's going to be smashing
10:16My inspiration was like fresh outdoors at a dinner party
10:20So I just really love that the pop is just enough through the lace
10:24Helen's gown is like the 60s through up
10:27I just designed a very basic maxi. Do you think this is under-designed? I
10:35Intentionally made it very minimal that way the judges can see that I can design with a simple silhouette and not have something that's too busy
10:44You'll work it out. Yeah, I'll figure. You're well. Thank you, Dawn. Thank you, Tim
10:48How are you? Well, Alexandria what's going on? I had a design I changed it had another one change it
10:53And then I saw the way this draped and I loved it and I thought it's cool. It's reading very
10:59Bohemian like
11:01Okay, is that a bad thing?
11:03I don't know that it's the modern southern woman
11:05So, okay, so I didn't hit the mark. Okay option. No wait a minute. I'm not saying you didn't hit the mark
11:11That's not at all what I'm saying. I'm just saying an editing. I
11:15Would be useful believe you do you need a hug? I need prayers
11:18designers
11:20Designers you have until midnight tonight and your models will be coming in soon. Okay. I'll see you in the morning
11:26Thank you everyone
11:31Zach may not be into floral, but he better hold this
11:37How are you?
11:40Great, that's where I am
11:42When the model comes in I have a half muslin for a jacket
11:46That's it
11:48See you later
11:53This challenge has really got me thinking about home. I'm not quite homesick. I do miss my mom
12:03Working hard. It's really long days. Yeah, you're going crazy. Yeah
12:08Have that other side came out yet a few times here and there so you need to come to
12:13reality
12:15I said don't go there
12:19I'm speaking so I need you to be quiet
12:23I'm not faking because I'm on TV that does not know I know that I was just wondering if you went in the bathroom and came back out somebody else
12:30Yeah, that has happened. It's normal. Yeah, I know it's normal. I'm like boiling water
12:35I can only take so much before I actually boil over and this is something that I'm working on
12:41Remember your own words that you can believe in yourself. Well, thanks mother. I'm taking my experience here moment by moment
12:49My only focus right now is completing my garment
13:00At the end of the day Jeremy's kind of far behind don't think I'm going to be able to line this jacket
13:06Justin completely redraped different new look
13:09I still have so much work to do because I'm hand draping the whole skirt and I haven't even stitched it yet
13:15Alright guys, it's midnight. Let's go
13:28This morning I feel fantastic with my design
13:31The only thing is we have no idea who's gonna be safe who's gonna win this challenge and who's going home
13:38Good morning everyone
13:40You have two hours to send your models to the L'Oreal Paris hair and makeup rooms. This is the Belk challenge
13:47Please use the Belk wall
13:49Appropriately your models will come in soon. Thank you everyone
13:58Oh my gosh, this color's so cute on you. When Cameron comes into the workroom
14:02I put the dress on her and she looks too cute for words a little Southern Belle
14:11Southern Belle man
14:13Well, I do declare. Yes, thank you
14:16We're using bright colors. It's all about the fearless fuchsia a little bit of liquid liner
14:21You take such good care of me
14:25Night out to dinner or modern Southern woman strengthen the lip pull back everywhere else
14:30It's not a bababoom. Let's go with pretty a pretty lip a little mascara. I love this peach gold cheek. I know what to do
14:38What I was thinking is she's very glamorous
14:42So I think a high ponytail the total repair five dry oil press it out with heat
14:47Oh, that's so cool. It's like you're destined
14:51We actually love the fondant of her hair. I was wondering if it's possible to get more fondant. Yeah, yeah
14:59Can we get some gloss on we'll use a little bit of the precious oils gives in a nice shine
15:04Mm-hmm. It does actually doesn't matter
15:12My focus now is to style this girl and make her as a belt like as possible. I have never access rice tomorrow. I know there's way too many of right now
15:23This is not very well put in but still it looks nice ten minutes before I go down to the runway
15:28I've literally just finished my dress, but it looks stunning. Anyway. Well done. Your fit is always immaculate
15:39Designers and models we're going down to the runway right now clothes unclothed whatever we're going down

17:07Welcome to the runway as you know in fashion one day you're in and the next day you're out
17:15Then I know if you're here and after tonight there will be eight
17:18We asked you to create a look for the Belk customer a modern southern woman
17:24The winning look will be manufactured and sold at Belk
17:29All right, let's say hello to the judges first. We have acclaimed fashion designer Zach Posen
17:33Hi
17:35Creative director for Marie Claire magazine Nina Garcia
17:38Hi there. Hello. Hi Nina
17:41Stacey Keebler host of the new television show
17:44Supermarket Superstar which is currently airing on lifetime. Hi guys
17:49Hi Stacey
17:50And John Thomas the executive vice president of private brands for Belk
17:56Hello to Zars. And this season we're excited to welcome Tim Gunn to the runway show
18:00All right, let's start the show
18:10I absolutely love my look coming down the runway. My dress moves very well. It's wee bone chic
18:17I'm in awe. I think I'm going to be in the top for this one
18:27She's glowing she's radiant. I feel so great with using yellow
18:37That's so out of my comfort zone, but I really nailed it with this one
18:40And I think it's very modern and very fashionable and there's no way I can lose with this look
18:45Whether I've nailed it or not that is my vision of the modern southern fashionable woman
18:52This is the look for the modern southern woman because it is all about keeping it simple but bold in the color
19:06I want to be her when I grow up
19:11I challenged myself. I was able to create something that I haven't seen before
19:16That's a nice drape on the picture
19:27My design is striking vibrant energetic exactly what the Belk woman should be
19:38It's moving exactly the way I wanted it and it's just the right amount of fullness. I hope I'm in the top three
19:46And I hope I win
19:48Now why doesn't my hair look like that when I tried to do it this morning?
19:55I chose some really difficult fabric
19:57I probably should have gone with something less pleated and had less structure and body to it
20:05This is outside my normal safety zone and I think that with the friendlier fabric my design would have been executed much more eloquently
20:16I really pushed myself to find new ways of using the plaid and the grain of the fabric
20:23So it had this image of being really really full and yet it hung closer to the body and didn't look overwhelming
20:31I take risks. That's what my work is about. I don't want to do something that I've seen before or that I've done before
20:37I would never see the modern southern woman and these plaid dresses in my opinion and she'd definitely be worried about this challenge
20:53I'm feeling very good about how fabrics moving she looks very sexy the height of the slit is perfect
21:01Her model really looks like the southern woman that I see in my family every day and they're modern and that's exactly what a modern southern woman should look like
21:17I'm not really sure what a modern southern woman looks like in the judges eyes my look not only looked sudden it looked nationwide and as a designer
21:26I'm thinking about every customer not just one
21:30It would certainly satisfy a large portion of the call Belk
21:45Everything that Belk said they wanted it's modern it's bright. It's exuberant
21:51I
21:53Am really proud of myself because I would never in a million years have chosen that print but she looks like a modern southern woman
22:08If I call your name, please step forward Helen
22:14Alexandria
22:16Justin
22:17If I've called your name congratulations your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round you can leave the runway
22:32The six of you have the highest and the lowest scores one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
22:40Let's bring out your models
22:42Great and tell us about your look I use cotton shirting to create a daydress the top I kept classic style on the bottom
22:56I wanted to take it more modern so it
22:58Literally has a little bit of history and a little bit of edge. I really like it
23:02I do like it that it is super short in the front super short on the side and long in the back
23:07I think it is modern and it has sex appeal to it. I would love to rock this dress. It felt fresh
23:13Modern and very southern and it looks like you could find it in a store which is exciting. Awesome. Thank you
23:20you chose a very
23:23expected fabric and
23:25Made something very unexpected. I think you did a great job. Thank you so much
23:30This dress just makes me happy and I loved how it moved great job. Thank you so much
23:36It's this modern version of country club, and I think that really came across job. Well done. Thank you so much
23:41Jeremy tell us about your look. I wanted to do a rework on a tailored jacket. I teamed this with an abstract
23:50geometric print
23:53I think we all kind of agree that this does not look very modern
23:58Again very madame. It's not madame
24:01That would be positive to this. Sorry, sweetie
24:03I'm also not very happy about the silhouette when she takes a jacket off. She's just a lady
24:10She's not very sexy. Well, it's colorful. I do have to agree
24:15It doesn't seem very hip and the length is a bit weird for me as well
24:21Somewhere it has to be a little sexy here. I can't get past the print
24:25Nothing about the dress or jacket look modern to me. I'm afraid this look just missed the mark
24:32Ken tell us about your look with this challenge. I wanted to go with the color that was vibrant, but also rich
24:39This particular dress is age-less. I absolutely love my look. I think you chose a great color
24:45That being said I'm not that interested in the dress. It's not a wow piece to me
24:53Where is she going? I thought about formal weddings wedding she's going to a wedding formal wedding
24:59I mean regardless of where she's going to is very unflattering
25:02It's a very safe design Ken where I live they are not walking around in these extravagant wow pieces
25:12I'm just not
25:14Excited by the dress the thing that jumps out as me is I've seen this before it wasn't a new a newer silhouette
25:20It read a little bridesmaid to me candidly, so
25:24How are you feeling Ken?
25:26It's not important right now. You look like you want to roll your eyes into your head right now. I
25:31I expected the judging panel to want plaid and that's not what I see at home
25:37Thank you Ken
25:39Kate tell us about your look when I went shopping at mood I went straight for the prints this one just jumped out at me
25:45Just the colors reminded me so much of this house. I think this was a really fun use of color
25:51You nailed it on that. It's very sellable. I really liked it. Thank you
25:54You picked a wonderful print this dress would have hanger appeal
26:01Kate I was not a fan of this dress. She looks pregnant in this dress especially from the side. How tall are you?
26:08She's 5'11 I mean who's 5'11 you know she's a gorgeous tall model, so imagine this on someone who's shorter. Sorry. Yeah, it's okay. Thank you
26:17I'd be happy if I saw a woman wearing this I think you know your customer you know how you'd like to dress
26:24I thought the execution this dress was great. Could you turn around real quick? I could see that on a rack
26:30It looked like something we could sell thank you
26:32Dom tell us about your look I grew up with a very southern upbringing so I decided to do a special occasion evening gown
26:39I love color. I love my dress. I love this coastal vibe
26:43I think the only thing I wrestled with is kind of the evening gown function of it
26:47This looks like a dress that I can see somewhere in a mall, but it's not fashion forward
26:53I thought about a woman who did buy a dress in the store. I didn't want to scale back and do something more minimal
26:58Maybe you scale back a little too much. There's so much that you could have done. You didn't do it
27:03I'm so surprised you went so safe. This was your challenge
27:07I need to see what umph you have as a designer. I have umph. Well, then bring it
27:13Alexander tell us about your look
27:16I found this print that is plaid which is kind of southern to me
27:19But then it also is actually painted strokes, which I thought was expressive and just did all these little tucks that stick out
27:25I think the dress looks beautifully made. I commend you in the time frame that is the fabric of stretch in it
27:31No, no. Well done. Thank you. I
27:35Think she looks sexy. I think she looks sophisticated. I think it's a fun dress. I would wear that dress, too
27:42You picked a beautiful pattern and then the silhouette I mean it is sexy it had great movement on the runway
27:47It looks like something I haven't necessarily seen it was fun. Thank you
27:51I think that the volume on the bottom is a good balance for the fit of the top the way that it moved down the runway was beautiful
27:58Thank you. The bodice is very beautiful. It has very nice movement to it
28:05Okay, we've heard what you had to say. We're going to take a closer look at the clothes
28:10Then I have a little chat and then we'll call you back in a little bit. You can leave the runway
28:14It was a challenging challenge I have to say. Yeah, I've never seen that the designer struggles so much with who the customer is
28:28The whole modern aspect of it is kind of missing in most of them
28:32But in Dawn's case that is her forte
28:36Color and print it looks very pageant. Yeah
28:40Jeremy's dress I mean this looks like a college fashion show in a non-metropolitan city the textile design is not good
28:50It's just not it's not a good print. It's sad because he's very talented
28:57Let's look at Ken's again. I mean, I just thought it looked a little pedestrian. Yeah, it's just not flattering. I think this is a dress that
29:05blends in
29:08You loved Kate, but I mean the execution the print and the color really beautiful. It is so unflattering this dress
29:14But she picked the right fabric
29:16I like it
29:17You can see a lot of girls wearing this and John you think that this would be sellable just in your store. Yeah love it
29:27To me it seems fun, you know, it's well-made she looks sexy
29:31I think he accomplished something really cool. It's a modern interpretation of an old dress. Oh, what right?
29:37That's what I think too. I think it's a blast. It's very cute
29:41I love the versatility of this dress. There's something very cool about it and very fresh because it's very traditional fabric
29:48And it's a very traditional silhouette. It's fabulous. It's great as is, but you can see this in other patterns
29:54We shall leave you to your deliberation
29:59I would really love to see what the bottom three would do if they really understood the challenge and who they were designing for because clearly they
30:09They didn't there's so many things you can do to change it and I wonder if we should take the time and have them just do that
30:21Designers your challenge was to create a look for the modern southern woman and
30:27For the most part we were underwhelmed
30:30We think that some of you really didn't understand the challenge
30:33Braden you were the exception you are the clear winner of this challenge
30:41Thank you very much your dress will be produced and sold at belk stores and on belk.com
30:48amazing
30:49Braden we loved your modern interpretation of a shirt dress and I cannot wait to see it in the stores. Congratulations. Wow. Thank you so much

31:41For the first time in project runway history
31:45I'm going to send you back to the workroom
31:48Right now
31:49You will have one hour to work on your look and to give you a little help each of you can choose one fellow designer
31:57You have access to all of the fabrics that are still in the workroom give us more modern fashion redo your silhouettes
32:04or start over whatever you can think of to save your looks do it it's a second chance
32:09It's a second chance
32:11Go go go
32:16What happened they're giving us an hour to redo everything you know shut up can we help you?
32:22We get to take one personally
32:24I decided to choose Helen because she is really good and I realized that someone's gonna go home
32:29Alexander do you mind giving me a little hand?
32:32Okay, I choose Alexander immediately because I think he's talented his construction is great
32:37But the thought of going back into the workroom is a traumatic as everyone has so much to do
32:44I chose Kate for this hour because Kate sells very fast and she knows how to play the game
32:51So what are they just hated about it? They did like the color a lot. So let's stick with the fabric
32:56I don't think we need to make a new dress within an hour's time frame
33:00I'm just gonna stick to my good and just remake this dress a really minimal like maybe
33:05Some kind of like great thing right there in the bus
33:08I'm very excited that I get a second chance for me to show these judges what I can do
33:12I had two ideas and I went with my second so now I get to show them what I originally had in mind for this challenge
33:18Let's do a quick version of that bias dress they love just shorter. Yeah the big thing with Jeremy the judges always call this stuff
33:24Madame the goal is keeping it a little bit more young and playful this aging it keep it clean and simple clean and simple
33:32We need to just take these out
33:35We are
33:37Panicking and I'm just hoping and praying that we can make something that keeps them safe
33:44I'm gonna pass out
33:46Designers thank your assistance. They are staying you and your models are going down to the runway right now
33:54Go to heavens be careful with those scissors. That was purgatory
34:02I keep everything clean simple and tailored
34:10I'm grateful at the fact that the judges are giving us a second chance
34:13However, it's been a rollercoaster ride for myself and the judges and this competition, so I hope that I don't get sent home
34:20I
34:27Am so proud of how well the dress moves and the fact that I made it in 60 minutes is an awesome thing
34:50I
34:52Took all of the accessories off
34:54Restyled the girls makeup and hair and we swapped the shoes to be a much younger more contemporary shoes
