00:01Hi everyone, it's season 14 and boy is it an exciting one. Oh, there's a lot of action
00:12We have a lot of drama you don't get it. No, I don't you have to talk to me shut up
00:17I do not want to bring this team down if one of us is gonna go home
00:20It's gonna be you this just seems like a bit of a bitch fest. Wow. This just got real. It's been real honey, okay?
00:26And tears it's not my day cuz I'm so disappointed over myself
00:33I'd be there for him. I'm so done with this
00:41This group of designers nearly had me pulling my hair out. I'm absolutely incredulous. How can this be?
00:47Oh, and I'm tired of hearing us Tim even dropped the f-bomb. What is the point?
00:54I love it when you say that
00:56I
00:58Have so much fun this season you're going to have a dumpster dive welcome aboard the celebrity summit
01:05We even get a little crazy at times. Good morning designers make it work. It's my art
01:12See this doesn't cover the caslapis
01:16Most importantly we have fashion that inspires us
01:23And fashion that excites us
01:26Feliz Cima wow
01:28This is my favorite brilliant what you've done who in some fashion that scares us
01:36She looks very monthly so
01:39Unflattering I wanted to take the pinata stick and start hitting it
01:43It's an amazing roller coaster ride
01:48So hop on board and let's get started
01:50My name is Edmund Newton. I am from Atlanta, Georgia
02:06It's been a long journey for me getting here. It's been a dream of mine since the very first episode
02:13I
02:15I can't believe that I am on project runway
02:17I am project runway. I'm here. Yep
02:19My name is Ashley Neal Tipton. I'm fun funky and fat
02:28Fashion is everything to me growing up as a big girl
02:32I didn't get those choices of wearing all the fun clothing and now that I am able to create things
02:40I finally get to wear the clothing that I've always wanted to wear
02:45I'm Amanda Perna. I'm 28 years old. I'm from Delray Beach, Florida
02:48Last time on season nine when I was here. I got cut early. I didn't even get to compete
02:52Amanda
02:53I'm sorry. You're out. I will do something with myself. This just wasn't my time
02:58In season nine, I wasn't completely sure of myself. I've grown a lot since I was here last
03:04And I really want to prove that in life when you fall you need to get back up
03:09My name is Meli Labissia and my family's from Haiti
03:12I'm really really proud about being Haitian. Oh lord
03:15I did architecture for a very long time when I really wanted to do fashion and so my aesthetic is
03:21Merge this idea of architecture and fashion provoking old thinking into new perspective
03:28You excited? Yeah, I'm excited. Yes
03:34I'm walking up to Madison Square Garden and it's almost surreal to be here coming all the way from New Zealand
03:40I graduated in November. I've been working in industry for four months. I just want to make it through first episode
03:48Some people find me charming some people find me intimidating some people just don't really like me at all
03:54I don't work well with others, but I'm here to work six weeks boot camp hundred grand go home
04:04My home is few blocks away from Madison square garden, but today is my first time
04:10So just make me feel so famous or something awesome
04:14I'm excited to see what this challenge is going to be about. I want to know why we're at Madison square garden
04:18I think there's sports that play there baseball or something. I don't know
04:21What the hell is this?
04:31Hi, hi, come on down here designers. It's great to see you. What the hell is going on here?
04:37I grew up playing sports like I played basketball like I didn't know if I was gonna have to play Heidi in some one-on-one like
04:42I'm ready to go if I were to arrive at the gates of heaven
04:46This is exactly what it would feel like
04:48I'm on project runway
04:51Hello designers welcome to new york city and to season 14 of project runway
04:58Welcome everyone we're thrilled to get to know each and every one of you you are standing in the world's most famous arena
05:04Madison square garden and this is where the best of the best in sports music and entertainment come together
05:10And you are here because you are the best of the best in fashion and one of you will win project runway season 14
05:19Yeah, one of you designers as you can see their fabrics scattered around the arena
05:25And we have moved to thank for that fabric and as you probably already guessed this fabric is the material for your challenge
05:32Look at them very thoughtfully and strategically because you will have three minutes to metaphorically shop and grab
05:40But you can only take four
05:43Textiles each your challenge will be to show us who you are as designers
05:48You may design whatever you want
05:50But you have to represent you and you will have one day to complete this challenge. I wish you all good luck
05:57Let's get this started on your marks. I have crazy long legs and I used to play a track. So let's do it. That's it. I'm not a runner like
06:09Go
06:12Everyone's just running around like they're getting free food
06:16All the good ones kept getting snatched before me and I was like there's another one. Oh, there's another one
06:22Oh
06:28People are passing up fabric, so I end up taking it. I don't know what kind of fabric it is. I just try to grab anything that I can
06:40All right, okay designers remember this is your first challenge and your first chance to impress the judges
06:47I wish you all good luck and I see you on the runway
06:49All right designers follow me or off to the work room
07:08I started designing when I was about seven eight years old
07:12We didn't have a lot of money
07:13We would shop for our thrift store clothes and I would realize when I would wear some of the stuff
07:18People would notice that there that was their clothes from the years before so I cut up all my thrift store clothes
07:25And I made my own clothes and I was like you can't make fun of me now
07:30Designers welcome to your work room
07:32It's pretty fabulous, isn't it?
07:34Yeah, and speaking of we have the just fab accessories wall
07:39This is what you'll be using to style your looks for the runway and next door
07:44We have the brother sewing room and you have access to a brother garment printer will be with us all season
07:51So it's your first challenge. It's very exciting
07:54The judges don't know anything about you at all
07:57So this is your opportunity to have them want to know more about you and to see more of your work
08:02All right. Have a good day. See you later. Thank you
08:05What's your special thing dresses presses I would describe my design aesthetic as being a fashion rebel
08:17I'm making a cocktail dress. My girl is very unique. She's eclectic
08:22I think it really will represent me well of who I am as a designer. Everyone's all try this on for me. That's good
08:29Never recall me because I made you
08:32My name is i'm now young. I'm from new york city
08:35But originally i'm made in china so i'm gonna use two fabrics to do some oversized one long vest and one dress inside
08:48Blake you look halfway done ah thank you wham bam thank you ma'am look i got a garment
08:54I love when you give me so many compliments that looks really good
08:56I guess i'm in the first place right now i'm like the only one who has actually something almost completely done
09:01So i guess i'm winning
09:03My design for social life people who are important people who can afford me when she walks into the room all eyes are on her like she is a center of attention
09:16I'm making a floor-length dress that's super pleated and asymmetrical
09:21I've only done menswear up until this point but i'm really interested in
09:25Trying to push my boundaries and draping and volume with women's wear looks like it's going to be done
09:30Yeah
09:31Gotta make it work gotta make it work gotta make it work gotta make i think the song is helping me
09:36I couldn't sing if my life depended on it
09:38I didn't even try to become one of those moms that you know try and sing to their kids
09:42I have two kids my son's three and my daughter's nine both blonde
09:48I'm the incubator
09:53There's a two paper baggie
09:55I think the color would be otherwise i say go for it
09:58My vision is doing a button-down crop top with an open back
10:03with a very over flowy skirt with box plates
10:07My biggest concern is how much they're going to like the print and the color combination
10:14I totally feel like i'm still in the process of finding who i am
10:20Okay
10:21Because i'm still trying to build my confidence
10:24Ashley how you doing?
10:26Okay
10:28What happened?
10:28I'm a little scared
10:30So am I
10:32Like a group are you okay?
10:34Oh
10:39Hi
10:40Hello
10:41Hi
10:42How is everyone?
10:45Good
10:46Well i'm here to check in with you
10:48I want him to see who i am and i want to impress him he's the man
10:54Duncan how are you?
10:55I'm doing uh one dress trying to do like something
10:59that looks kind of simple and just easy but then you understand how
11:02You know it just sits on the body
11:06I have a very positive response to what you've done so far
11:09Yeah
11:10There's a harmony there's a balance there's visual interest
11:13And i think you have the potential here for a serious wow moment
11:16Okay
11:17Thank you
11:18Ashley talk to me
11:19So my original idea was to do these box pleats
11:23Or my other thoughts was to go with this fabric for the whole skirt and then doing this print as the top
11:30I'd follow the lead of what you're how you've styled yourself
11:34Yeah
11:35And go with the big print on the bottom
11:36Okay
11:37I just think it's more interesting
11:38And then what do you think about the back should it almost be backless like just to give some more skin
11:44I'm with you about having skin in the back
11:46Yeah
11:47How much is up to you?
11:48Okay
11:49Yay i'm excited
11:50It should be
11:50Okay awesome
11:52We're done for this skirt which is like slightly asymmetrical
11:55It's just straight on the side curved on this
11:57I just feel as though we can already go out and get this
12:01Why didn't you run panels vertically rather than cutting her here because we're gonna see all this
12:07Yeah that is what i usually do with my sheath dresses
12:11Why
12:14The way that this drapes on its own really disturbs me it looks like a receptacle like she puts her lunch in it
12:23Having the critique with tim it can be bittersweet
12:25Talk to me
12:27The sweet part is if he gets it
12:31I feel good about where you're going
12:32But the bitter part is just anticipating his response to your ideal
12:37My feeling is that you're trying to gild the lily
12:40It's a streamlined dress streamline it
12:44Your vision
12:45The word nina uses is mumsy
12:47Oh yeah i don't want that word
12:48You don't want that word
12:49Or the direction that you're kind of just going in with what you're creating
12:52Edmund hello tim how are you feeling about this challenge with the fabric that i was you know
13:00Pretty much i grabbed i kind of constructed them to at least bring out who i am somewhat as a designer
13:05How would you describe that verbally my person uh she's i call her a fashion rebel chic she kind of goes against the grain she does her own thing
13:14Well when i listen to you describe who your customer is and i look at this dress i see a total disconnect
13:21I don't see someone who isn't following trends it's a pretty basic looking dress to me
13:27And not well done
13:29It makes me question your conceptual abilities and your construction it's the antithesis of joy
13:36it's just dreary
13:38i hate some gun hi so talk to me okay so this is my muslim i started i draped then i went to patterns
13:54i'm thinking of adding sleeves but i'm not sure yet listen this time frame i don't think we're gonna see sleeves
14:00okay thank you this seam right here is sewn into this um into the muslin yeah no no not the muslim
14:06this is just the muslin i was just showing you like when i do the muslin okay it's it's muslin with
14:09an n thank you muslin with an n muslin your face tim got no i just want you to have enough together
14:17to be able to put something on your model i feel the alert like ringing in my head now work i need to
14:23make this happen you have a very graphic print how do you feel about the fact that it doesn't match up
14:33well like right here you're saying it doesn't match here it doesn't match here doesn't match where
14:36the darts are doesn't match yeah i've been waiting to talk to tim gun my whole life and i'm looking
14:42at my dress and it sucks and i'm like this is not the situation i want to be in on my first challenge
14:48david how are you i'm really nervous everyone in this room should be nervous
14:53does this represent who you are as a designer
14:55yeah you hesitated it's just that i don't like making clothes in a rush well welcome to project
15:04runway the whole season's going to be a rush the police just look so messy the most interesting thing
15:12about this is the textile i mean where is the innovation i feel that what you're doing with the
15:17back is so forced and contrived it looks as though you're trying to put a square peg into a round hole
15:24right now it droops is that what you intend to have it do um no if this is the material you're
15:31using and you want to create this hard structured long vest it's not going to service you well okay
15:42wow all right designers i'm not going to mince words generally speaking i'm really disappointed
15:49a lot of you have a big lump of coal up your rear ends you either need to get that lump of coal out
15:57or turn it into a diamond so your models are coming in very soon and you have until nine
16:02o'clock tonight and i will see you in the morning thank you wow
16:12so as soon as tim walks away i rip that dress off the mannequin as fast as i can
16:21so i scrap that lindsay gives me a new fabric and i am doing a pretty much the same design
16:28but with a different fabric that i feel way more comfortable working with
16:34and finally that you're going to do the open one yeah i'm going to do the open one with that gabrielle
16:39had this really cool cut out circle fabric if i had white lining i would just make a cute like
16:45sweetheart i'm making another dress the exact same dress but in different materials so i'm taking
16:55tim's advice just committing to this dress that i have i kind of hate it like i really hate it
17:01this looks so frumpy but maybe the judges will see that i do have some design in me and it's not
17:05something so simple because i could go home for that what time is it seven we have two hours two
17:14is that when you fall in the runway wish me luck good luck
17:20i'm a bit worried i was okay earlier but i'm worried now i still have a few things left
17:26to do i still need to recut the whole front piece attach the peplum sew the zipper in there's still quite a
17:33bit of work but you know nine o'clock time's up everybody drop it
17:42we're going to come back okay buy a work room
17:54oh it's really cute the fact that our beds have ruffles on them i love it i would rather use this for
18:02my uh fabric than my career we're all stressed we're all wanting to win but someone has to go home
18:21good morning designers your models will come in very shortly you will send them to the mary k color
18:28design studio and the sally beauty studio all right use the just fab accessories wall
18:34very thoughtfully it is a big day it's your first runway
18:39thank you thanks tim hello perfect perfect yeah i love the skirt and are we there okay yeah sit so
18:53let's like i want it too i feel like everybody in the workspace is like rushing it working it we're gonna
19:00do it hi how are you how are you i'm louise i'm thinking sultry a little bit of gold on her lid are
19:10you feeling kind of a berry because berry is to me the new red yes natasha's got the lips and the eyes
19:18going on i want something that's like a little beachy kind of natural like maybe like a light colored
19:24lip and some bronzer we have this bronzer here we can use it in the high points so that she looks
19:30sun-kissed perfect mary k you're doing it hi i'm gregory patterson lead stylist for sally beauty studio
19:36i was thinking maybe a ponytail really straight so super sleek and we can add that length to it yeah
19:42we got you beautiful what is her feeling she's fabulous she's fabulous we'll add some beach head
19:48to really help keep those waves like soft and natural in the hair we're gonna make this beautiful
19:53for you i was thinking like a wet shine look and a really low like flip like pull through bun easy if
19:59we got your high shine with our body being gel perfect that's what i want we got you
20:06initially i was really concerned about ashley with the fabrics that she was using
20:10but she decided to mix it up and her look is absolutely beautiful i like that but i don't understand
20:15blake's look it's just really weird she looks like a kite yeah it feels really nicely in the back
20:25designers and models we are going down to the runway all right and we're gonna have an incredible show
20:36that's it
20:36hello everybody and welcome to the runway okay designers as you know in fashion one day you're
20:49in and the next day you're out there's 16 of you here and after tonight there will be 15. your challenge
20:55was simple we asked you to show us who you are as a designer you only have one chance to make a first
21:01impression so i hope that you have a spectacular runway show prepared for us today all right let's
21:06say hello to our judges creative director of brooks brothers women and fashion designer zach posen hi
21:13designers creative director for mericlair magazine nina garcia hi everyone hi and sports illustrated cover
21:22model and host of the upcoming project runway junior hannah davis hello welcome thank you also we love
21:31having tim gun here for the runway show i love being here for the show as you know he will not be judging
21:37as he is your mentor that said he will have one tim gun save that eliminated designer can then return to
21:44the competition we have an anonymous runway show so your work must stand out on its own all right let's start
21:52the show i'm liking how it is moving down with the flow in the back i like the pop of color with the
22:03lining hopefully it goes well with the geometric shapes happening up top that's like pure art right there
22:10my skirt looks so cute it's fun it's playful but it's also wearable and my top that caused me such a
22:25headache is actually looking pretty good also that's cute good job
22:31i'm very excited about the shape the fit the color the style the split is not something i would normally do
22:46but it was just me taking a risk it's sexy
22:51even the fabric i don't like but i think it works out to the color combination and it's really
23:03wearable and fashionable it's cute
23:07the skirt flounced around as much as i wanted it the bodice fit her like a glove
23:24i feel that i'm showing a lot of technique in one look and that i think the judges will appreciate
23:37the pink was the right choice for me i really think it's a statement color the movement of the
23:45silk is really nice the drapes working perfectly i think she looks really lovely congratulations that
23:52looks great
23:58i mean she's killing it she has the ball at this point she strikes a pose i'm like that is it
24:06that's what i wanted
24:17my garment totally to the t is an example of what i envision for the future for this woman and
24:24what kind of woman i want to represent
24:36my look seems to be the most casual look today but i make casual clothing so i'm fine with it
24:47i would still wear that
24:50i feel like what i made is safe so i'll end up being safe
24:52i really want to make oversized maxi but still sexy a touch of couture and glam
25:03and you did pockets yeah wow
25:16my favorite thing about this look is the skirt the intricate seeming and then just the overall fit
25:21i think she's a modern interpretation of my classic style and i'm really happy
25:38i think the way i designed my top is so different than something you would normally see the pattern
25:43wasn't my first choice so i would understand if i was just safe i don't see myself being in the bottom
25:48now
25:56i don't know if this is really my look i mean the one that really represents me
26:01i got a bit of time with a bit of fabric and i had to make it work and you know what i feel good that i did
26:15watching my design come down the runway i'm not proud of it
26:19this design is not me i got lost and i hopefully will not go home but i feel as though i should
26:26like i'm not proud of it it it moves really well it's holding its shape
26:42it's a really strong confident look and that's what i'm all about women with strength
26:46i definitely feel like my design shows my point of view and it really tells a story of
27:01who my customer is and how she likes to dress and really shows personality actually that's amazing wow
27:09i have to say this was a great first runway show thank you okay we have just learned which designer
27:20created which look if i call your name please step forward ashley come me up edmund
27:29blake
27:33duncan merlene
27:37if i have not called your name congratulations your scores have qualified you to move on to the
27:42next round you can leave the runway
27:49the six of you have the highest and the lowest scores one of you will be named the winner and one of you
27:55will be out
28:03the six of you have the highest and the lowest scores one of you will be named the winner and one of you
28:08will be out edmund tell us a little bit about you i have been designing for a few years now and i've
28:14been auditioning for project runway since the very first season so since the very first season yes every
28:20single year 2004 every single year so i'm so excited to be here well welcome to project runway
28:27thank you nina the first thing that i thought was polished and dramatic that means so much i appreciate
28:33it i think it looks really beautifully made i don't think it's revolutionary as a design yet i mean it's a
28:39tube dress with a train on the skirt but i think it's a good start and it had good movement to it okay
28:45hannah what do you think it is sexy it fits well the only thing i'm unsure about is the neon underneath
28:54i'm not always a huge fan of the lining being a different color i thought this was a brilliant
29:00way to incorporate something else you know to this look she looks great in it thank you thank you edmund
29:07blake tell us about your look and how it represents you as a designer my woman likes to feel empowered
29:15memorable she wants all eyes beyond her so i combined two different fabrics this print and then another
29:20print as the lining so once you walk down you just got a little peekaboo of the yellow so blake do you
29:24think you are a high score or a low score i'm always a high score unfortunately you're not oh it's a lot of
29:32print and then there's a lot of funny draping going on and to boot you add some more yellow there's too much
29:41i have to agree with nina my eye doesn't really know where to go it's a lot of color and kind of
29:48clownish you know if you want to be a theatrical designer then go there fully okay but the in between
29:55just gets left behind i cannot tell if you can actually sew or not the seams they're all curly
30:02on the side they're all waving yeah it's hand-tacked so it's a little messy i'm gonna have to see it up
30:07close though oh great thank you blake thank you guys hi my personal aesthetic is oversight so i try
30:15to do something like a color block to create more volume i really appreciate the volume play and the
30:21asymmetry here but the first thing when it came out i thought sally draper and a picnic tablecloth it
30:28just didn't really work for me today it almost looks a little maternity i just feel like she's
30:33drowning a little bit in the clothes i think i get your aesthetic it's oversized it's a little modern i
30:40think the problem here is that the fabric that you chose it is the opposite of that she looks a little
30:47bit like a monk with the shape and the color and the jesus sandals it's a it's a fail thank you hanyo
30:55thank you marlene my background is in architecture when i look through the world i constantly see
31:00shapes line shadow 3d and so i really wanted to put that into fashion my girl she was powerful when
31:07she walked into her room she grabbed attention she's this young professional girl you know part of this
31:13challenge was to give you guys fabric but also how does that fabric help communicate your aesthetic
31:19and i think in this case it really did i was most impressed with this look i love how it kind of dips
31:25up so it's sophisticated but it still gives you a little bit of sexy i love the back can she turn around
31:33i love that it sort of has that tuxedo sort of menswear feel to the back you just did a great job
31:39all right i think you're playing with interesting construction i like that you think about creative
31:44ideas of architecture and then how is it wearable it's good the construction of this it looks very
31:51difficult and it's different and we like different around here oh we do i want to know i want to know
31:58what else you can do okay me too thank you marlene thank you ashley please tell us about your look and
32:04how it represents you as a designer i love pushing the boundaries with different prints and textures
32:10together so i decided to go with a box pleat skirt with pockets inside and this print with an open back
32:18so ashley i wrote for your notes ambitious and bold you created something that all of the other
32:26contestants here today did not do something that had texture i love the colors i love the design
32:36i really love this thank you this was my favorite look i especially love the waist the only thing i
32:43would do is maybe crop the top a little bit more but it's just something i would wear so it's so well
32:49done and beautiful first start i guess thank you well i thought it was playful i thought it was chic
32:55i thought it looked feminine but it doesn't feel girly yeah you know it still feels appropriate for
33:01a woman yes it is new it is unexpected i mean you can tell already first challenge you know what you're
33:07doing thank you thank you ashley thank you duncan um this came when i first got into the arena and i
33:14saw this piece of fabric i've only done menswear before this is my first attempt ever at draping and
33:20i really managed to make it work and get the desired effect i want that kind of madame grey era but
33:25keep it modern i think draping can be really sexy but in this case there was just too much fabric okay
33:34and you don't see her sexy body i mean i think if you had a whole open back on that yeah it would have
33:40given that breath and sexiness to it but with the bun and the severe thing i sort of got like
33:45charmeuse obi-wan kenobi i'm more forgiving with the fabric but i do believe any of the fabrics it
33:51would still look the same because it's the way you constructed this dress to make this into a madame
33:57grey dress is very ambitious to say the least yeah on a time constraint yeah it feels unfinished it feels
34:05like a toga like a salmon toga okay thank you you seem pretty laid back are you excited to be here i am
34:11excited to be here and seeing it come to life and being when we're sitting and seeing it come down
34:15the runway that's when it became exciting for me so you totally stand behind what you did which is
34:20a little bit frightening thank you duncan hey thank you hardy okay we've heard what you had to say

35:33looks on the bottom yes all right hannah is wearing duncan to me this looks like i made it it looks like
35:39a toga and he does not know how to do a hem look at this he's relatively inexperienced
35:44i mean that is troubling to me as well it just looks really messy the necklace the rings the bracelet
35:53wow this yellow has a print too yes i do like somebody that has more ideas than has no idea 100
36:01because you can always reign the ideas in whereas if you have a designer that really has no ideas
36:06there's something you can do whoa it's not that flattering i mean well that's for sure yeah that's
36:16what i was asking her i'm like who is this girl and where is she going no bueno no
36:24all right now for the looks you did like we have zorana wearing merlene i think she did great in one
36:31you can see her architecture background for sure with all these lines yeah well look guys there's
36:37a beautiful curve she understands the body this curve from here going into there and then picking
36:42up in a nice loop i don't know there's sophistication here of cut in form i do think that i can see who
36:48she is as a designer agreed she has something to say
36:51it is sophisticated she's fun she used texture there's different elements she's engineered her
37:02pleats and even her waistband is lined it's a great look that could have gone awry yes easily i think
37:08this is somebody when we push them a little bit further i think we're going to see great work out
37:12of her yeah i think so too
37:13you guys love this you know i think it looks well made and i thought it was clever i just feel like
37:24it's club dress and then a train it's two separate things you know i'm not wowed by it i don't know who
37:30he is as an original designer here i don't know this kind of tells me who he is he likes a sexy girl yes
