00:00Hi, I've got a 2005 Cummins with a 5.9 in it, 24 valve, and the customer's thrown a bunch of parts at it.
00:07I call that hunting with a shotgun, and it hasn't fixed this problem.
00:11His complaint is the truck gets up over 230 degrees.
00:15He's put a radiator in it, he's put a fan clutch in it, a thermostat, and now he's brought it to us.
00:21So, we're going to kind of show you how we're going to figure this out.
00:25Now, I'm just getting in the middle of this.
00:26So, the customer, I guess, has thrown a bunch of parts at it.
00:29Tell me what he's thrown at it.
00:32Everything. He's done radiator, fan clutch.
00:35Yeah, I was looking at the radiator, it looks brand new.
00:36Temp sensor, he's done several thermostats.
00:40And we don't have any indication of a blown head gasket?
00:42At this time, no.
00:45So, so far, I'm not building up any excessive pressure in the cooling system.
00:49He says the temperature does come down when he comes to a stop or different scenarios.
00:55Comes to a stop? So, that wouldn't be airflow?
00:59So, I wouldn't even be worried about the fan clutch.
01:01So, the temperature comes down when he comes to a stop.
01:04Is that true?
01:05That's what I overheard.
01:06So, I'm just trying to gather what I can.
01:08That's kind of an important point.
01:10Because if it's coming down, if the temperature's cooling down when he comes to a stop,
01:14it's definitely not the fan clutch.
01:15Because fan clutch, it's drawn air.
01:17I would think it's more revs, which would lead me to a blown head gasket.
01:26Okay, take it up to two grand.
01:28What I'm looking for is hot spots where I don't want them.
01:47My fan clutch is starting to work, but not really.
01:54What's your scan tool show, buddy?
02:08What's your scan tool show?
02:10180?
02:11I'm 168.
02:12Okay.
02:13Keep going.
02:14Yeah, we're 167 here.
02:15Depends on where he is.
02:17What's your temperature?
02:18170.
02:19Okay.
02:20Just keep going.
02:21Take it up.
02:22Hold it up at two grand.
02:25Take it up, hold it up at two grand.
02:45If we had a blown head gasket, by now I'd have that creep up that before that we'd be
03:08up around 15-20 PSI if we're not.
03:12Let's just put a radiator cap on it and take it for a ride unless you don't want to make
03:16a mess and we'll just leave this hanging here.
03:17You can't close the hood.
03:18Can't?
03:19No, that's...
03:20Too high?
03:21Yeah.
03:22So, I can spray it with water and cool it off or we'll just make a little mess and rinse
03:31it off real quick.
03:34At this point, everything's functioning correctly.
03:37So the only thing I want to do is load it up.
03:39Let me just take it for a drive.
03:41I know you got stuff to do.
03:43Let me get the data pulled up for you.
03:46So you can compare the coolant reading there to his on the dash and then here's for the
03:52radiator fan.
03:53When it comes on?
03:54Yeah.
03:55It'll be like...
03:56It'll change the percentage or the RPM for the fan will change.
04:00Okay.
04:01Here's ECM RPM so you can see the difference.
04:05Yeah.
04:06Cool.
04:07That's smart.
04:08Hop in here, Tyson.
04:09One of the things we can find out here, our coolant temperature right now is around 170.
04:13See how our fan isn't fully engaged because our engine temperatures... or I'm sorry, our RPM
04:18on the engine...
04:19I'll take it up here to about 1500.
04:22See how the radiator fan clutches at 300?
04:26Which is about right.
04:27I mean, that's correct.
04:29So the fan is basically just kind of like free spinning.
04:32Free spinning.
04:33Yeah, it's not doing much.
04:34Let's go see if we can load it up and see what happens.
04:36Close your door.
04:37It's terrifying that finally by the time he put a third thermostat in it, that the third
04:44one was a charm.
04:45Charm.
04:46And the fact is, how many times do we put thermostats in cars and they're a problem,
04:50dude.
04:51Brand spanking new out of the box.
04:53I mean, it irritates the crap out of you.
04:55This is a pretty good old truck for a 20 year old truck.
04:58It's pretty clean.
05:01Yee-haw.
05:08Watch our temp and then see if that fan clutch starts to engage.
05:15What do you got?
05:16I mean, we haven't even crested 190.
05:19It's not going to start engaging until well, until 200 plus.
05:22With that thermostat in, it's going to have to work hard for it.
05:30190.
05:31You see, as soon as you start accelerating, it drops the coolant temp.
05:52Peaked at 195 and now it's on its way back down.
05:57Is the RPMs, is the fan clutch engaged at all?
05:59Nope.
06:00It'll get up to 600 RPM when you're romping on it.
06:10Then that causes the coolant temperature to drop.
06:14So it's functioning.
06:16It's functioning just the way it ought to.
06:19It's just, he's got that lower high flow thermostat.
06:22So it's harder for it to get up to a higher temp.
06:26Yeah.
06:27You know what?
06:28He probably, you know, this is what I want to find out now.
06:31I want to find out.
06:32Okay.
06:33Would you replace first?
06:34Yep.
06:35And it might've been a thermostat.
06:36And so is a bad thermostat.
06:37Then he's like, ah, that didn't fix it.
06:38Let's put a fan clutch on it.
06:39Yep.
06:40And it probably never needed it.
06:41Chasing a bad part, dude.
06:43I'll bet that's what's going on here.
06:46Things functioning perfectly right now.
06:48It's working, keeping the temp under control.
06:51The only thing we could do different is hook a 20,000 pound trailer on the back end of this thing and pull the crap out of it.
06:59I would suspect it's not going to be any different.
07:02Let me call the guy and see what he replaced first.
07:04But my guess is before I even call him, I'm going to bet you at lunch.
07:08All right.
07:09That it's, that it's, he replaced the thermostat first and got a bad thermostat.
07:14Yeah.
07:15He says he replaced it three times.
07:16Because of all the parts that we replace on a vehicle that has a problem and it's like a pain in the butt is a thermostat.
07:22Yep.
07:23They sometimes right out of the box, they don't work great.
07:25Okay.
07:26Hi, this is Dave at Dave's Auto.
07:27How are you?
07:28Dave, how are you doing?
07:29I'm doing good.
07:30Do you have a moment to talk to me about your truck?
07:32I'm going to ask you a question and I'm going to try to get the timeline of this.
07:36What was the very first part you replaced trying to fix this overheat problem?
07:40The thermostat.
07:43I knew it.
07:44Okay.
07:45So now take, go from there.
07:46You replaced the thermostat, didn't fix your problem then.
07:49What did you do?
07:50What caused me to replace the thermostat in the first place was I wasn't getting heat.
07:54I went through three of them.
07:56Stock thermostats trying to rectify the problem and I was getting one.
08:01When you say stock, when you say stock thermostats, the first thermostat you replaced was, where did you purchase it?
08:07All righties.
08:08That didn't fix the problem.
08:10And then what, you went and got another thermostat?
08:12Or did you, when did you replace the radiator and the fan clutch?
08:15After the third thermostat didn't work.
08:18Maybe it's the radiator, maybe it's this.
08:20And I had actually taken it to the dealer to try and chase the problem as well.
08:25And they, I thought maybe it was even a computer problem, not registering the right temperature.
08:31They said that they did not have the ability to test the ECM or the PCM or whatever they call it.
08:39Well, when you say tested, I mean, you know, you can check your interpreted data is what's on your scan screen.
08:45And right now, our interpretive data is correct.
08:49It is showing that, you know, the truck's 170.
08:52And then I verified that with my infrared gun where the temperature sensor is and it's within a degree or two.
08:59So it is correct.
09:00Now, does it glitch intermittently and, you know, showing correct?
09:05Possibly, but highly unlikely.
09:08You know, I think what you've had here, I think you've got the truck fixed.
09:13I mean, why don't you go ahead and tell me the rest of your story so that I get it correctly.
09:17By the third thermostat, and these are all at O'Reilly?
09:20O'Reilly's and AutoZone between both of them.
09:23Okay, because you thought I can't get a good thermostat at O'Reilly, I'll try somebody else.
09:27So after three thermostats, if I've got that right, then you decided to do the fan clutch and the radiator at the same time?
09:33I did the radiator first.
09:35I thought, okay, maybe it's a flow problem.
09:38I started the truck and I couldn't see the flow going on inside the radiator, you know, shining light down in it.
09:44Sure.
09:45And looking for it and I couldn't see it.
09:47So I said, well, maybe it's a plugged radiator.
09:50Just so you know, if the coolant's cold, you know, and it was if you got the radiator cap off, your thermostat would be closed and so you wouldn't have any flow through the radiator.
10:00You'd have to have the thermostat out to be able to circulate the water in that condition.
10:04But anyway, I got you.
10:07So then that didn't do it and then you put a fan clutch on it?
10:10Yeah.
10:11And the dealer said, okay, you got a bad fan clutch.
10:15And I said, okay, replace it.
10:17And they replaced it.
10:18That helped a little bit on the temperature control, but it didn't do much.
10:22So you did the three thermostats and the radiator.
10:25Finally, you kind of threw your hands in the air and said, I'm taking it to the dealer and they're the ones who diagnosed the fan clutch.
10:30Correct.
10:31Okay.
10:32I was looking at 230, 236 is where I've got the alarm set, I believe.
10:38Uh-huh.
10:39And I was hitting that alarm.
10:41Yeah, that's a little, that's a little warm for coolant.
10:44Oil, that's fine, but coolant, that's, that's a little, that's a little warm.
10:48I agree.
10:49You know, you might have had, it sounds like maybe you did have a, a weak fan clutch.
10:53I mean, you know, the truck's 20 years old, 200,000 miles.
10:57That, that would not be unusual.
10:59I think you fell into the trap that a lot of mechanics, and I mean that, it's a trap and it's a terrible trap to be in.
11:05The thermostat is one of the number one we have found here in our store.
11:09One of the number one faulty components that are brand new.
11:13Okay.
11:14Of all the nightmares.
11:15I did three.
11:16Huh?
11:17I did three.
11:18I did test the last two before I put them in the truck.
11:21Of all the nightmares that we suffer around here with, you know, getting bad parts that are brand new.
11:26Thermostat and oxygen sensors are at the top of the list, honestly.
11:29As best as I can tell, I think you've, you've fixed the truck.
11:33You know, I think that you, between you and the dealer, you've got the truck fixed.
11:38Whether you needed a radiator or not, you've got a nice new one in there, and that's never a bad thing.
11:43I think you probably did need a fan clutch, and I think you probably did need a good thermostat, and you finally got one in there.
11:49I don't have any hydrocarbons in it.
11:51I don't have any hydrocarbons in it.
11:52You know, it's not building pressure under a load in the cooling system, which, you know, like a blown head gasket.
11:56Now, let me finish up with this.
11:59Could you have damaged the head gasket to a point that it's, like, fragile right now and, you know, waiting to burn up?
12:07Possibly, maybe 200,000 miles, but, you know, that's speculation, but right now, it's fine.
12:13Well, that's awesome news, and I just needed somebody that knew what the heck they were talking about to confirm what I thought had happened.
12:20Yeah.
12:21Nice truck.
12:22I think you're, I think you're fine.
12:24I'll, I'll put my notes in here, and you can come back and get it here as soon as you'd like.
12:28I'm just around the corner.
12:29I'll walk down there, but, hey, I appreciate it.
12:31I, you know, enjoyed all your videos you got up there, and that's why I decided to bring the truck to you.
12:36Well, thank, thank you very much.
12:38Appreciate your business.
12:39Have a good day.
12:40You, too.
12:41Have a good one.
12:42Bye-bye.
12:43That's a shame.
12:44The way you could have verified, here's how you can verify when you've got a bad thermostat that's new.
12:47You'll need a temp gun, and you'll want to measure the, the, the hot side of the thermostat, which will be the block side,
12:54and then the, the other side of the thermostat, and you want to see, is it opening and closing?
12:59And you can tell that with a, a good thermal temp gun.
13:01You can tell the, the difference, the differences in the temperature.
13:05And you can say, hey, my brand new thermostat is either stuck open or it's stuck closed,
13:10and I'm getting all this heat down on this side, and it's not opening to let the water flow through it.
13:14That's how you check.
13:16That's how you check.
13:17That's how you check.
13:18That's how you check.
