02:23A car has something, but it is something.
02:27I got a good question here.
02:29Do you enjoy mentoring people?
02:31That's the most important thing to me in my life, in the business world.
02:34It isn't social media, it's not running my business anymore.
02:38My sons do a great job of that, so I don't have to worry about that.
02:41My interaction with the young men and women that I get to deal with in this industry,
02:45not only in my shop but people I get to meet at trade shows and things like that.
02:49I love that.
02:50To add to that question, someone asked, do you see yourself ever truly retired?
02:55When they throw dirt in my face.
02:57And since I'm going to be cremated, I guess that's when it'll be.
03:01I got no plans to retire.
03:02I mean, what is retirement?
03:03Really, what is retirement?
03:05We always want you to come in and hang out with us.
03:07I know you do.
03:08I know you do.
03:09That's the best part of it.
03:10I know you do.
03:11But seriously, what am I going to do if I retire?
03:13First off, I think me and your mother will be divorced in a month,
03:16you know, because I'd be home too much.
03:19No, I don't have any plans to retire.
03:20Do I do what I want to do at this point in my life?
03:23Absolutely.
03:23And that's what you always strive for.
03:25I'm going to add this because we just did this thing on the McLaren and, you know, Mercedes
03:29or Ferrari.
03:30People went all over the place with that.
03:32You know, they're like, oh, he's spending too much money and things like that.
03:35Hey, look, man, I've been doing this for a long time.
03:38And I think what I also found out, I like equipment.
03:42If I'm going to spend 400 grand on something, it's going to be for me.
03:46Yeah, it is.
03:47It's going to be for Joey.
03:49To share.
03:50To share.
03:51You know, it's going to be a piece of equipment or a commercial piece of real estate.
03:55It's going to be something to further the legacy that me and my sons are creating here.
04:00They're like, oh, my gosh, all of a sudden these guys popped up.
04:02They're on social media.
04:03Their success is just bam.
04:05It's like a light switch.
04:06It just happened.
04:07I remember, you know, me and Joey growing up and we spent our a lot of our childhood
04:12and a lot of our holidays cleaning the shop and working here.
04:15I mean, the success was not helping me run air pipe.
04:18Yeah, he talked about that the other day.
04:20Joey's like, I ran that air pipe.
04:22And I was like, yeah, now we're going to tear it out 20 years ago.
04:25All of a sudden, here's these people that, you know, he must have that success because
04:29of the social media.
04:30No.
04:31No.
04:32The short answer is no.
04:33Dave drove a minivan for very, very long.
04:35No, tell him.
04:3622 years, dude.
04:37Bought it brand new in 1999.
04:39Yeah.
04:40And I remember when we got that thing, we had a VCR player under the back seat.
04:44And I thought like, dude, this is the Rolls Royce.
04:47I showed it off to my friends.
04:49But you drove that thing for 22 years.
04:5222 years.
04:53Do you have any female mechanics?
04:54I have hired female mechanics in this shop.
04:57They haven't worked out.
05:00It's been at least 15 years since I had one in here.
05:03Would I hire a female mechanic if she was qualified?
05:06Yeah.
05:07I'd hire a male mechanic if he came here in a dress.
05:10I told my sons that.
05:11And we'd respect the guy.
05:12I have no judgment about that kind of stuff.
05:14I hope every man and woman finds peace on this earth.
05:17That's how I feel.
05:18Are you hiring?
05:19Continuously.
05:20Send us your resume if you've got qualifications.
05:23What are we looking for in people?
05:26Qualifications.
05:27Yeah.
05:28You know.
05:29Experience.
05:30Sometimes we hire people.
05:32But this is.
05:33Sometimes we hire people without qualifications.
05:35But they have the knack.
05:38They got the shots.
05:39But we got an 18 year old kid in here right now.
05:42And Joey's like, I like that kid.
05:44Don't say his name because you know he's new.
05:46But.
05:47Smart kid.
05:48Smart kid.
05:49I got my first mechanic job when I was 15 years old.
05:51Walking by Friendly Checker Cabin Limousine Company in Miami, Florida.
05:55I had a garage.
05:56It was under the carport.
05:57Big place.
05:58A lot of cars around as I would call it when I was a little kid.
06:00And I just loved all the crap that was going on in there.
06:03And you know.
06:04Cars tore down.
06:05Guys working.
06:06It was just looked like, man I need to.
06:08I want to be a part of that.
06:09I went and I started talking to the guy and he was like, yeah kid get out of here.
06:12But I told him one day, I said look, give me a job.
06:15Let me work for a week.
06:16I'll do whatever you want.
06:18I'll work for a week.
06:19And at the end of that week, if you don't want me around here, I'm gone.
06:22I won't bug you again.
06:23After two days, as I recall, I think it was only two days.
06:26He gave me a job.
06:27I think I started out at like $2.25 an hour.
06:31That would have been back in 1975.
06:34And the rest is history.
06:37But that's how bad I wanted the job.
06:39I was willing to work for free.
06:41Show me that you're willing to do whatever it takes.
06:44Because you know what?
06:45You want to be successful?
06:46That's the key to it.
06:47You will do whatever it takes.
06:49A lot of them in here.
06:50Can I ship you my car?
06:51Can I ship you my truck?
06:52I got this vet.
06:53Yes.
06:54We ship vehicles from all over the country here.
06:57So if you need that done, we can certainly help you out with that.
07:00A lot of questions about the cost of Keyway, a Duramax.
07:04Oh, yeah.
07:05What's involved in that.
07:07We've had a lot of videos where we show people where we get rid of the dowel pin.
07:10Some people don't know what's involved to do that.
07:12Some people think, hey, can I bring my truck in, oil change, keyway?
07:16Well, let's tell them also it's not only the keyway, the crank, but it's the camshaft too.
07:20You've got to do both of them.
07:22Right.
07:23So we only do the keys when we're making a motor.
07:25We're not telling you you need to, you know, send us your motor to just get a keyway done in it.
07:29That's probably not a good idea.
07:30You wait until it blows up.
07:31But this is an added benefit.
07:33It's like ARP head studs.
07:35Will the motor run without ARP head studs?
07:37Obviously.
07:38That's how they come from the factory.
07:40Will it last longer with ARP head studs?
07:42Yes.
07:43Same with the keyway and the battery.
07:45So people out there that, you know, are saying, you know, I'm trying to scare people.
07:49I'm not scaring anybody.
07:50I'm an engine builder.
07:51My sons are engine builders.
07:53We've done hundreds of these motors, the Duramaxes, and we have found that we have no warranty claims
08:01with pin shearing up, whether the guy did a water pump or not.
08:04You might as well, you know, if you're going to buy an engine, you might as well get all
08:08the upgrades you can.
08:09It is a concern.
08:10There's flaws.
08:11In every engine.
08:12In every engine.
08:13And that's just a flaw.
08:14But a lot of people are saying, well, it's never happened in my truck and I've worked on
08:18a totally bone stock engine that isn't modified or tuned or souped up in any way.
08:23And never is going to need a water pump.
08:25Right.
08:26And then somebody's not going to bolt the bolt down, right?
08:28That's all speculation.
08:29Right.
08:30There's a guy out there that's saying, this pin is shearing off of the harmonic balancer
08:33because the guy replaced the water pump.
08:35And didn't put the bolt back on tight?
08:37There's no science in that.
08:39That's your speculation.
08:40And by the way, we're seeing pins shear off of the crank gear, the reluctor wheel, the
08:45harmonic balancer, and the camshaft.
08:48And last time I checked, you're not taking the camshaft gear off when you're doing a
08:52water pump
08:53We're dealing with science here, not speculation.
08:55It requires total disassembly of the engine to machine those and then put it back together.
09:00So yeah, when we do an engine build, we'll do it.
09:02If your engine isn't blown up, it's overkill to do that just for that reason.
09:07What got you into building motors?
09:09Ooh, man, I'm going to tell you.
09:12I am a mechanic.
09:13I am not a technician.
09:15You know, you're talking to a mechanic.
09:17And for me, the definition of a mechanic is a guy that can fix things.
09:21I got into machining, building motors, because I couldn't find anyone to do good work.
09:27That's the truth.
09:28All the machine shops that I had to deal with never received the work done in the quality that
09:33I wanted it done in.
09:35And so I started out doing it.
09:36I'm self-trained.
09:37Joey and Miles are kind of self-trained.
09:40Now we've gone to a lot of schooling and now, you know, we're known in the industry as
09:45leaders in this.
09:46But it was basically, yeah, to do it right.
09:50So that's why we got into that.
09:52A lot of questions about what kind of cars I like, you know.
09:55I basically have driven about everything on the road.
09:57And have I worked on exotics?
09:59Yes.
10:00Do we work on a lot of them?
10:01No.
10:02It's Utah.
10:03There's not a lot of them around.
10:04Do you take days off?
10:05Not really.
10:06Whether you're here or not, we're always working.
10:09I take more days off now than I used to, for sure.
10:12You know, I worked six days a week forever.
10:15And you know, 12, 14 hour days forever.
10:19My first five to eight years.
10:21When I built this shop here in Centerville, I built a house right behind it.
10:24And I lived in that house for about 10 years.
10:27That was one of my keys to success is that I organized my space.
10:31If you drive a half hour to work each way and you work 250 days a year, that's one hour
10:36a day of lost production.
10:38And if you're a mechanic, it's all about what you can produce with this and this.
10:41And so 250 hours a year lost production, sitting in a car traveling.
10:47How many weeks is that?
10:48Four, eight, 12, 16, two.
10:50That's six weeks of lost production.
10:53What is your time worth?
10:54What do you love most when you have time off from work?
10:57Spending time with my family.
10:58What's the best mindset for working on cars and their stupid designs?
11:03Stop thinking it's stupid designs.
11:05How would you tackle any problem in life?
11:07If you think that's freaking stupid right from the get go.
11:10So a change in attitude would be my first suggestion.
11:14Any successful person, if you get to the core of it, is a great problem solver.
11:18And they figured out how to tackle them efficiently.
11:20Let's give it to them.
11:21The four rows.
11:22Four rows.
11:23You knew it was coming.
11:24I knew it was coming.
11:25You knew it was coming.
11:26It's opportunities, man.
11:27Opposition creates opportunities with options.
11:30That's what you're talking about.
11:32To overcome.
11:33That's how a mechanic becomes super good.
11:35Yeah.
11:36If you're intimidated by a problem at the start, it's going to intimidate you throughout
11:39the entire process.
11:40Yeah.
11:41We call it brain screwing.
11:42Yeah.
11:43And it's real.
11:44Yeah.
11:45And it is very real.
11:46Failure is okay.
11:47Figuring things out and stumbling is okay.
11:48Well, what's the true definition of failure?
11:50Give it up.
11:51Yeah.
11:52Give it up.
11:53We fail continually.
11:54We learn.
11:55It's the giving up.
11:56Right.
11:57What tool do you use to fit pistons, sleeve or ring clamp?
11:59I use any tool I can to get a piston in there.
12:03It depends on the piston.
12:04It depends on the ring pack.
12:06But I use total seal sleeves.
12:08I use ring clamps.
12:09I mean, again, I'll use my fingers if I have to.
12:12Yeah.
12:13Sometimes you get studs in the way.
12:14Yeah.
12:15Sometimes, or the deck's not.
12:16There's always a method to the madness.
12:17Any way you do it, just getting it in there right and not messing up the ring.
12:20So again, you're back, you got more than one option.
12:22Right.
12:23You pick the one that works.
12:24How do you know if you're pinching a ring?
12:26You'll feel it catch.
12:28You can hear it.
12:29You know, it's in the machine world and in mechanics world.
12:32It's all about your senses.
12:33You know, use every sense you've got, your eyeballs, your ears.
12:36You know, when you're hammering that in there, if something feels like it's not going
12:39in, there's no reason to force it because you're going to break something.
12:42Yeah.
12:43How do you verify?
12:44So you got the, you got the ring pack in, you got the piston in.
12:46You can rock the piston to kind of make sure you've got nothing binding up.
12:50You're looking at the cylinder walls to make sure you've got no scoring going on in the
12:53cylinder walls
12:54You're looking at your oil film on the wall to make sure your ring gaps are not on the
12:58thrust wall for startup.
12:59You know, you're rotating it.
13:01You're rotating it.
13:02You're feeling, you know, every time you pop a piston in, you're giving it a couple
13:05revolutions to make sure you got nothing binding up.
13:07If you do snag a ring, it's usually going to be your oil ring.
13:10In the first couple of strokes, it's going to give you a nice, big, deep gouge in there.
13:13And you're going to feel it.
13:14Yeah.
13:15It's using your senses.
13:16You don't put in all four pistons and then go, okay, now let me rotate it a bunch of
13:21times.
13:22Right.
13:23Every, every piston that goes in, rotate it a bunch of times.
13:25By the time you've gotten eight pistons in an engine, you're going to have a hard time
13:29feeling, you know, where you've got a bind or if you've got an issue.
13:32So it's, it's nice and easy to do it after every time, you know, you tighten a bolt down,
13:36rotate it
13:37You put a piston in, rotate it.
13:38Yeah.
13:39Yeah.
13:40What is your favorite engine that you guys offer through monster engines?
13:43Oh, the juggernaut.
13:44The juggernaut.
13:45I was going to say the same thing.
13:47We came up with that because we were in a formula one.
13:50They kept calling me jiggling Joe.
13:52Cause, cause it works kind of monster miles that works.
13:55And we were trying to figure out something that would jive with the name Joe.
13:59I like dynamo Dave.
14:00Oh, there you go.
14:01Dynamo Dave.
14:02But I was like, Oh, he was so excited.
14:04The juggernaut, freaking juggernaut Joey.
14:07So tell us what does the juggernaut have in our builds?
14:10So we've actually listed it on our monster engines.com website.
14:14It really is.
14:15We'll geek out for a second.
14:16Uh, comics.
14:17If anyone knows the juggernaut, this guy is an unstoppable force.
14:22And really that's what the engine concept is.
14:24Oh, we're going to X-Man stuff right now, right?
14:26Well, the juggernaut definition is unstoppable force.
14:29That's the definition of a juggernaut.
14:30The juggernaut.
14:31It's unstoppable.
14:32It's an engine that has premium everything.
14:35Speed of air.
14:36ARP.
14:37Billet caps.
14:38Billet cap.
14:39O-girdle.
14:40Balance.
14:41Balance.
14:42Performance balance.
14:43Jessel valve train.
14:44Whoa.
14:45Yeah.
14:46I mean.
14:47Whoa.
14:48Yeah.
14:49It's got everything that's premium, heavy duty, race ready.
14:51We're eliminating all the faults of these engines, you know, and making them just more
14:55sturdy and able to handle that power.
14:57The juggernaut.
14:58The juggernaut.
14:59Dude, it's perfect.
15:00We offer it in our Duramax line.
15:02Power strobe.
15:036.0, 6.4, and 6.7 power strobe.
15:05We're still working on the Cummins.
15:06Okay.
15:07But we'll get there.
15:08We'll get there.
15:09The Cummins factory.
15:10Yeah.
15:11In Indiana.
15:12Yeah.
15:13We're getting a personal tour.
15:14Taking the film crew.
15:15I don't know that they're going to let us film at all, but we're going to get to have one
15:18inside look at how these engines are made from all the way from like, what, the 3 liter
15:22all the way to 15 liters or something like that.
15:24Yeah.
15:25There's different facilities.
15:26Yeah.
15:27So it depends on which one we choose, but they'll allow us to go through the facility.
15:31Yeah.
15:32We'll make sure we get a couple of long videos on there.
15:34Here's some trivia.
15:35Do you know how many engines they produce a day?
15:38Three.
15:39Nailed it.
15:40Two Cummins?
15:41Yeah.
15:42Like in one factory?
15:43The whole thing?
15:44Well, I'll have to double check my facts here, but I think in one facility.
15:47In one facility.
15:48A thousand.
15:49I'm going to say 150.
15:51Up to 600.
15:52A day.
15:53Wow.
15:54That's a lot of Cummins.
15:55That's a lot of Cummins.
15:56Holy cow.
15:57We had a question about the 6.0 power stroke and how we make them better.
16:01Yes.
16:02With the 6.0 and 6.4 power stroke, they really struggled with the head bolt design on there,
16:06having a four head bolt design.
16:07The 6.0, they used a smaller head bolt and the 6.4, they tried to fix that on just putting
16:12a beefier head bolt in there.
16:14Doesn't work.
16:15So the things we start out with is we'll O ring the cylinder heads to give it a little
16:19bit extra clamping and then throw the ARP head studs on there, which helps a ton with
16:24the head gaskets.
16:25They've also got oil cooler problems.
16:27The orifices inside the oil cooler are so small that the smallest little bit of debris will
16:31clog that up and then you're just getting problems with your oil cooler.
16:34So we do the bulletproof oil cooler.
16:36Torque plate hone.
16:37Oh, we torque plate hone all our blocks.
16:38We align ourselves.
16:39Yeah.
16:40Line hone every block.
16:41That's a separate.
16:42Yeah.
16:43The big problem with the girdles on those is just their alignment.
16:45So yeah, we go through every housing bore on those blocks, torque plate hone them with
16:49the studs.
16:50Yeah.
16:51I mean, there's, there's nothing we don't really look at on those blocks.
16:53So by O ring them and everything helps eliminate that head gasket failure.
16:57The injection system with the Huey injection is all oil controlled.
17:02And so baking that oil affects your EGR cooler, your injectors, your high pressure oil pump,
17:07all the stuff like that
17:08So yeah.
17:09Bulletproof makes a great oil cooler.
17:10You know, that external oil cooler.
17:11The air cooled one.
17:12Yeah.
17:13Both those motors are designed to cool their oil with engine coolant.
17:17So you're basically the coolest you're ever going to hope to get that oil cooled off
17:22tube is whatever your coolant is, is 220.
17:25Well, then our, our six fours talking about some upgrades.
17:28We also do the max force pistons, which is a different, uh, I believe they're D-lip.
17:33It's a D-lip piston, which helps, you know, if you ever see a piston crack, the area it's
17:37usually going to crack is on the combustion bowl because it's got sharp edges on it.
17:41So what they're doing is they're curling that bowl out a little bit to relieve that and
17:45it helps reduce the cracks on pistons.
17:47And that's what we do on crankships.
17:48It's the same principle on any edge, any edge like that is a prone spot.
17:54So you'll, you'll put a radius on it.
17:56Yeah.
17:57Well, then, uh, a lot of times on our, our six O and six four heads, because those are
18:01the, the seats are part of the casting, right?
18:03Right.
18:04So we replace those with a hardened valve seat, put hardened seats in them, bronze guides,
18:07you run a little tighter clearance on them, um, hardened valves in there.
18:12Uh, usually we'll upgrade the springs.
18:14So yeah, there's, there's a lot in there.
18:16The bridges in the rocker arms are another problem with those.
18:19Yeah.
18:20Yeah.
18:21So those are all replaced.
18:22All right.
18:23One more question.
18:24Last one is the banks monster Ram.
18:25People are saying, is it worth it?
18:27Intake?
18:28A hundred percent.
18:29No, not a hundred percent.
18:30Eighty five percent increase.
18:32Oh, well, a hundred percent is better.
18:35It is better.
18:36That's what I meant.
18:37But it gives you an 85% increase in air flow and air flow.
18:39And let me tell you, there's two things an engine needs.
18:42Well, above compression, which, you know, diesel is twice what a gas is.
18:47It's got to have good air coming in and fuel.
18:51I think a lot of people have a misconception with the diesel.
18:53They're like, oh, let's just throw a bunch of fuel at it.
18:55Yeah.
18:56Fuel it.
18:57And let's blow some black smoke.
18:58Smoke.
18:59Mike does a better job explaining why that's just a waste of money and harmful to your
19:04engine
19:05Builds up soot, degrades the oil.
19:08And since I'm a six, seven owner myself, that heater grid, that bolt and the stud that
19:15come off, we've seen it destroy engines.
19:18So the monster Ram eliminates that, increases your air flow.
19:22You still keep an intake air heater, which you need on the Cummins, and it's just a different
19:26design
19:27In 50 states and still not mess with your emissions.
19:30Yeah.
19:31All right, everybody, man.
19:32This has been fun.
19:33Appreciate your questions.
19:34And we'll do this again sometime, eh?
19:36Yeah.
19:37So send some more questions.
19:38Send some difficult ones.
19:39Take some technical ones.
19:40Yeah.
19:41Some big technical ones.
19:42We'd like to keep this up and make this valuable to anyone that's watching.
19:46Thanks.
19:47Thanks.
