00:00okay good morning it's a fabulous Friday I say fabulous because it's last day of
00:10the month last day of the pay period and all my guys are humping and going this
00:14is the truck guy brought to me and it came to me this way he says rebuilt this
00:18engine I'm gonna assume it was done it it's got some paint on here maybe it's
00:22been sitting for a while but he wants it sim tested that's why he brought it to
00:27me like this we we have done nothing to the truck except push it in here he
00:31wants a bid for me to remove the engine and run it in our sim test I don't have
00:36a problem with doing that but we will have to keep itself contained which means
00:40I won't do them when you bring me an engine like this with the oil pan off of
00:45it and circulate my oil through it because I don't know what's going on inside this
00:49motor he's got the oil pan on it so we'll leave that on there and and run his oil
00:55through the system but this is also will have to come off and he's got his
01:00injectors so he's got the fuel system kind of covered up but I'll have to take
01:03off this high pressure pump because I don't want to run this dry in my sim test
01:08machine he's got this coolant bypass here I want to show you this we've had
01:13problems with these I know I want to talk about this cylinder number six in this
01:17Cummins if you don't have enough cylinder wall clearance in the piston you can
01:22have a problem with it this is the temporary fix okay so they say I have
01:28actually had to remove these customers and brought cars to me or trucks and I've
01:34had to remove this in order for the engine not to overheat pulling parties
01:39Canyon which is the Canyon that goes up to Park City Utah it's a steep incline
01:43it'll it'll burn up a truck especially if you're pulling a trailer and the guy
01:47kept complaining that one at one of these jobs I did he kept complaining you know
01:52he had three thermostats put in it new fan clutch water pump you know been
01:57everywhere trying to get it fixed and we noticed that he had one of these on here
02:00so we thought what the heck let's just see because what this is doing is this is
02:05bypassing the the water not to go through the head up through the thermostat it's
02:10just drawing water out of the back of the block and I believe it's leaving too
02:14much hot water in the head the fix for this is when you get your motor rebuilt I
02:19know it's a temporary fix but I'm not convinced that it's the best one let me
02:23know what you think I'm sure I'm sure I'll hear from plenty of you but I wanted
02:28to let you know that what we're going to do with this is we're going to pull it
02:32out with sim test and with that sim test we can do a running compression test make
02:36sure all our cylinders are got good compression we'll pull the valve cover off
02:39we'll look at his valve adjustment and and the valve train we'll check for oil
02:43pressure and we can also vacuum check the motor the cooling system to make sure
02:47that we've got no leaks like in his head gasket or something like that so let's
02:53get it out test so we pulled off the high pressure pump we don't want to run
02:58that so the high pressure fuel pump has been removed do you know anything about
03:02this motor nothing it looks like that it's been sitting for a while Dylan what do
03:07you know about this motor is it used is a remand is it whatever I noticed how long
03:15ago that I didn't ask him okay that would have been a good question because how
03:18long is this motor been sitting before I start rotating it that's real important
03:22to me okay has he done the core because the core bolts were loose on that they
03:25weren't it sure doesn't look like it's been replaced and this head looks like it's
03:28been sitting around a long time with this flash rust on it the block has been
03:32painted but you know that's all I know about get him on the phone and tell him I
03:35want to talk to get some more answers oh Dave hey thanks for taking my call
03:40listen we're just loading this engine that you brought to us I get you know
03:46already installed in your truck we're loading this into our sim test machine
03:50before we turn that over and start doing our work I want to ask you a few
03:54questions about this come here Matt so Matt's your service rider and I asked him
04:00and he told me that you told him that you rebuilt this motor yes okay they did the
04:05machine work and you did the build is that correct yes sir okay how long ago
04:10was that done only about July August of last year so we're eight months something
04:16like that yeah did you put a new oil cooler in the engine oil cooler yes you
04:22did put a new oil cooler behind that oil cooler cover there's a brand new one not
04:25not your old one yes sir okay it's just got some flash rust on it has the car just
04:30been out in the weather is that why it's kind of got that flash rust on the
04:33cylinder head the block looks like it's painted but the that's why I'm asking
04:37this thing's only been sitting outside since July August yeah it didn't get
04:41like exposed the rain or anything like that the hood was over here okay all
04:46right well I will go ahead and we'll spin this motor up do a running
04:49compression test on before you give you those readings we'll also check the oil
04:54pressure at like 450 rpm that'll tell us if you got good oil and we'll watch the
05:00valve train we pulled the valve cover off of it so we can watch the valve train
05:04function and all that we'll get back to work on it and that should put call you
05:08by the end of the day and let you know how the results were okay thank you so
05:11much thank you sir appreciate your business okay you too bye-bye okay we're
05:16pulling a vacuum on this cooling system that's the noise you hear but he's missing
05:23some plug it's not leaking from anywhere else so the cooling system is held up now
05:30we're gonna hook up for oil pressure now we're because he built this motor I the
05:35oil pans on his motor normally I would I would use my oil and recirculate the oil
05:39through one of the motors that I built but when I'm sim testing a customer
05:43supplied engine I do it with the oil pan on with oil in it so that I'm not
05:47contaminating my wall if his engine comes apart or something like that
05:53that's good no oil pressure yet we're looking for oil pressure coming out of
06:05here
06:07okay okay no oil pressure and and Joey what does my face look like surprise cool
06:30that's clueless that's clueless so I'm gonna call a customer that I just spoke
06:34to and tell him we've spun this motor up you did fill the oil filter up with the
06:38wall excellent so we we we charge the oil filter everybody out there's gonna want
06:43to know that did he not get his oil cooler you know tight in here so the
06:48first thing we'll do is we'll pull the oil cooler off and we'll take a look and
06:52see what's going on there and then then we'll pull the you know he might not have
06:57put the pickup tube in it too you know I mean I mean it's got the oil pan on it
07:02and maybe he forgot the old pump pickup tube anyway time to make another phone
07:07call this Dave again Dave how's it going well it's good until I spun up your
07:13engine we have it in the sim test we've spun it up we like to spin it about 150
07:18rpm kind of slow at first and we the oil filter we put on it we filled it up with
07:23oil of course and but we spun it for 30 seconds and we don't have any oil
07:29pressure we're tapped in at the top of the oil cooler the oil filter housing
07:33where the oil pressure sending unit goes we've got no oil pressure there so I
07:37want to ask you a few questions okay the oil pump pickup tube you did put it you
07:42know the oil pans on it so I'm assuming you got the pickup tube bolted up in
07:46there and everything yep the oil cooler the o-rings and all that when you
07:50install it on in on the inside of that housing on the block yeah yeah there's
07:54two metal gaskets so think of it like this the two metal gaskets are the bread
07:58and the oil coolers the cheese did you put the yeah yeah okay so you got that
08:03right the motor was machined it and then when you got the block back you're the
08:08one that did the build did they talk to you about the oil galley plugs that were
08:11removed on the block or anything like that because those are behind the front
08:14cover and you could be losing oil pressure they look like freeze plugs almost but
08:18they're a lot of small oil galley plugs and you would have to remove those to
08:22clean the block properly they had never said anything about that now I'm getting
08:27more nervous so now I'm gonna ask you some serious questions when you got this
08:31block back and you said it was bored over 30 right bored and home for 30 over
08:35pistons 40 over yeah okay that's that's fine did they align hone the block or
08:40anything like that do anything else on the mains or all that yeah they aligned the
08:44mains and made sure everything was good there okay and then the crankshaft what
08:49did this motor go down for number five piston burn up okay injectors oh number
08:54six is on its way out yeah okay pretty calm it's okay bearings on the crank you
08:59didn't you didn't ruin a crank no they gave it all back to you did they tell you
09:03how to clean the block or did they have they had they done a final clean on it the
09:08final cleaning process was you taking brushes and washing the cylinders taking
09:13long brushes going through all the oil galleys to make sure there was none of
09:17that steel shot still in those holes yeah did you did you do that no I didn't
09:24personally but they said they cleaned it and got it all ready think that it was
09:29pretty clean I didn't okay we're either concerns about it having anything like
09:33that it's a high probability not not a possibility it's a high very high
09:38probability now let me those little beads those little steel beads right one of
09:43those just one will ruin your motor ruin your motor one of those steel beads on a
09:50bearing will wipe out the journal and it's downhill from there now give them a
09:54call and say guys I built this motor you know I'm having it sim tested but I need
09:59to know because I don't have any oil pressure and my guys wondering if if the
10:03oil galley plugs did you remove them when you oven bacon shot blasted the block
10:07first off did you take those out they would have a standard practice in my
10:11shop they have to come out if we do machine work for a customer like you we
10:16then put a rust penetrant on the cylinder wall the exposed metal and we give the
10:21motor back to them with an understanding all your freeze plugs and
10:25oil galley plugs are out of this motor and every orifice and every every hold the
10:30entire block needs to be washed thoroughly and accurately and we have
10:35videos that kind of show people what that means but I can almost assure you
10:39that that final wash process with the brushes and all that was not done most
10:46machine shops do not do that final wash the assembling technician is responsible
10:51for that now let me tell you why it's like a surgeon okay when a surgeons doing
10:56surgery on you it's his responsibility to scrub his hands and put on gloves because
11:02ultimately he's the final guy to say I was clean that you know that patient got an
11:07infection it didn't come from me I need to call me right back so we can see where
11:12we're gonna go with this because I'm tying up a piece of equipment I need to
11:14hustle circle back bye bye oh my gosh I'm I'm concerned for this gentleman
11:22everybody wants to be an engine builder everybody that you know probably follows
11:26me and comes to me and things like that that's great you know I want to be a
11:29surgeon too I'm sure I could watch a YouTube video and learn how to cut
11:32somebody's appendix out of him and I could probably get away with it I mean I
11:36I'm thinking I got the skill for that you know I might not have a stomach because
11:40I don't like blood but I bet I could probably go in there cut it off snip it off I'm a
11:44fisherman so I could tie a couple knots and be okay but if one thing wasn't
11:50right I wouldn't know what to do so that's why building an engine and if
11:55he's if this step has been overlooked and there's a problem with it oh my
11:59goodness this poor young man is gonna have to tear this engine down to have it
12:03done right because I you know no matter what I still don't have oil pressure so
12:07there's something going on that ain't right
12:09Dave I guess the machine shop didn't shot blast the block no cuz they told me if
12:15they only thing they really shot blast is the head if they had to rebuild it but
12:19you didn't even have the head rebuilt I had them go through it and then they
12:24checked to make sure everything was you know flush and everything was working
12:29right but they did born hone it and all so all that you know when they're honing a
12:33block and born it you got a lot of metal right because okay right who could who
12:40cleaned all that out of the oil galleys so he said that he they brush it out
12:45everything and then make sure totally and what about the oil galley plugs because
12:51if they brush it out they have to remove the oil galley plugs all right the first
12:57let me tell you what we're gonna do next I'm gonna have to pull the oil pan off of it
13:01and then the front cover and find out you know what's going on here I'll have
13:06Matt call you here within the hour to get your approval on that and we'll get
13:09this figured out man all right bye oh this is a problem so he didn't even have
13:15the cylinder head rebuilt he just had a valve replaced do all that work and not
13:19spend the money to you know do the whole job right is I'll never understand that
13:23because now he's paying me more money to do the job then it would have cost him to
13:27have me build the motor that's what we're here on earth doing learning from
13:31our mistakes hopefully this will be one that won't be too painful Matt the plot
13:36gets thicker these are the things as a service right you got to open people up
13:39about so try to do that in the future the more information you can gather
13:42especially on this kind of a job where you know guys built his own motor and
13:46blah blah blah we need to remove the oil pan and the front cover and start
13:51looking into it he's gonna also have to probably pull the oil pump out of it
13:55which is behind the front you know the front covers got to come off I'll get
13:58with Dylan and get it squared away all right everybody we got this Cummins
14:03here out of the sim test machine we're gonna start tearing it down to see what
14:06we can find we think first we're gonna pull the oil pan and the front cover so
14:12that way we can test and verify if the oil pump has been put on the pickup tubes
14:16in right if we don't find anything there then we'll start digging in even more
14:21after that
14:51so we got the rear adapter plate off here and this is the camshaft that's the
15:17crankshaft and you can see we've been getting the engine oil to the camshaft
15:21here so we've torn down this Cummins that were sim testing and my son Joey and
15:27Dylan here found a few things so we just pulled the front cover off of this and
15:31we got a loose bolt here we've had some loose bolts on the pump the pump wasn't
15:35tightened in all the way so it might be sucking air through the side of it oh look
15:40at this there's another loose one here here's the thing it tells me look how
15:45dirty that bolt is and it's on the inside of the engine and if it's hard to
15:50see but every bolt in here I mean look at my finger in the cam gear yeah it's
15:55it's like look
15:58it looks like it's got old diesel oil in it it's not primed whatsoever there's no
16:03way that's gonna suck anything up and if you look it looks like I'm seating
16:07here but not down here this this part of this oil pump is made to press up
16:13against the block here and seal there's a there's a specific torque sequence for
16:17this and if you don't follow it it is not going to seal and all you're gonna do
16:20is suck air out of the crankcase that's not what you want your you know to come
16:25out of an engine that you said hey I just rebuilt this well I found out the
16:31head replaced one valve he said I took it the machine shop they checked it out
16:36look at the back of that valve down there oh gosh it's all right it's all well
16:43let's get a bore scope oh my gosh
16:48better to catch it now before you oh my gosh
16:53my motors don't turn like that oh geez that's a whole lot of resistance on it
17:06it's got a tight spot in it whoa let's take a look there that's nasty go back in
17:12oh yeah there's nothing wrong with that seat
17:14jeez
17:16there
17:18here we go
17:22what's all that

17:29uh-huh uh-huh
17:31oh man it's got a fresh crosshatch
17:34that's dirt look at all that dirt hanging on the wall
17:37what's the deal there there's definitely score marks on that wall
17:41and there's definitely dirt look at that crap sitting there
17:44okay this guy needs a motor I wouldn't stand behind this without
17:48no I'm not even gonna sim test it I'm like
17:51do we want to pull a rod cap off real quick
17:52I don't want to do nothing until the guy decides gonna have us build it I don't
17:56know what to say okay he's been a pretty good guy
17:59and uh let's go see
18:02babe how's it going it's going pretty good on my end I'm hoping that you're gonna have
18:07an okay Easter weekend but because I'm on the phone with you for I think the
18:11fourth or fifth time the news just gets worse and worse did you open that link
18:15yeah yeah I took some pictures of it that one hole I'm looking at is cylinder
18:20number six the other thing is this motor's got dirt everywhere in it I've
18:24you know I'm making a video of it I like I just take my hand on the ins on the cam
18:29gears and things like that you know that weren't clean properly and there's
18:32grit and grime on them there's loose bolts on the front there's loose bolts in the
18:37front cover which is kind of cool that we pulled the front cover off because
18:40they would have vibrated out probably within 50 miles or less and I would have
18:45never caught it on my sim test machine and those little bolts that hold the
18:48back of the front cover on the block that they would have come out and got
18:52locked up in the in the timing gears and man it that would have destroyed this
18:56motor here's the thing man you're spending way too much money for me to tell
19:01you this thing is that you know on fire you need to drop stop and roll away from
19:05this thing so what I what I'm going to propose to you and you're welcome to
19:09come out here and meet me and see the shop or something I think you ought to
19:12just let us build you a motor we can use your core I don't know anything that's
19:16wrong with your core yet but of course and here's what I mean by a core you know
19:19the block can't have any cracks in it the crank can't be damaged the cams got to be
19:23good and the head can't have any cracks in it the reason that we believe that the
19:27engine wasn't producing oil pressure is you didn't have the oil pump in there
19:31correctly and it was sucking air between the housing and the pump it looks to me
19:35since they board and honed this block that they gave it back to you and just
19:40honing oil or something you know because the oil that's in here is dark up in this
19:45engine I can give you a price on our monster engine a long block and I'm
19:51gonna go back to my guy and say you know we still have the labor to pull the
19:54engine out I don't know if you want us to put the engine back in but you know if
19:58you want me to get it running for you I can do that too dude but you know
20:01it'll cost you money and I don't know what your budget is I'm trying to be
20:04kind to you what do you want to do yeah like I said man whatever we need to do
20:09just get it get it running get it on the road and I can get rid of it I want to
20:15do a good job for you know you know and you want that because you're too far
20:19down the the rabbit hole this will be the way to go but now we got to look
20:24over all your other parts like your turbo you know everything that you know
20:28needs to make this thing run that you've got you tore out and it's in a
20:31back of your truck we'll take care of you man we'll put you a great engine one
20:34of our monster engines my son has developed these both my sons and it
20:40will give you a price on one of those and talk to you Monday Tuesday at the
20:43latest okay thank you guys you have a good day you too yeah this is unfortunate but
20:48this happens more often than not you know I know people want to do their jobs and
20:52only you know whether you're capable of it I mean that's that's you might be
20:57very capable of it and I would never want to stop somebody seems like a great
21:00young man it's it'd be a nice end of this week if we can make him happy

21:10he just wants it done in fact that was his word you know I just want to get it
21:13done right yeah so I can get it sold and now we can give him a good thing and if
21:18even if he sells it he'll be giving a good product to the buyer so what I need you to
21:22do is I need you to do a full inventory on this because you're gonna be putting
21:26that motor back together turnkey get it up and running I know it's like I'm
21:30bringing you a bucket of bolts and I want you to put it all together just
21:33right but you've done enough of them comers I mean that's it is what it is
21:36we can figure it out it ain't a problem and for now get that engine kind of just
21:40off on a thing and I want to give him a quote before we tear his core down yeah I
21:43don't want to spend any more of his money until he knows that this is what it's
21:47gonna really cost yeah okay all right peace dude thank you
