00:00Hey everybody, I want to introduce you to somebody new. It's Kian, and Kian, we're going to ask you real quickly to tell us a little bit, not quickly, take as much time as you want.
00:09Tell us a little about it. He just started, let me say this. We don't hire a lot of mechanics because we're freaking picky as crap, but we're always looking for good mechanics, but it takes a long time to work yourself in here.
00:22Sometimes, though, we hire guys and they don't work out, and that's okay. They've got some experience here, but Kian, I know you've got a lot of experience. Why don't you tell me about where your experience is? You've been working with your dad for a long time.
00:36Yeah. So I worked with my dad. That was the last shop I worked at. Worked with him for, oh man, that's the only job I ever had. Just left only because I just felt I needed a change.
00:48You know, he's still my dad. I still love him. I would go. If he called me with help, I'd still go help him. There was no bridges burnt coming up here, but wanted a little more experience, something different that Dave and the crew can offer me that I couldn't get with my dad.
01:01Yeah. So what we do is first day on the job is today. Welcome, by the way.
01:07And we threw him in the deep end. We just tossed him right in the pool, and we gave him a no start on a sprinter, and I said, have you seen many sprinters?
01:15And he's like, a little bit, and we work on a ton of these old sprinters, and why don't you walk me through kind of what you found on this and how you diagnosed the no start?
01:25Was it intermittent? Tell me what the customer complaint was first.
01:27The customer complaint was that the vehicle would not start unless they jumped it.
01:32I walked out in the parking lot, the vehicle started up, and came in the shop.
01:36Without jumping it?
01:37Without jumping it.
01:37Okay.
01:38Yeah. Got it in here, so I started testing the battery.
01:40Great.
01:41And battery tested great, so I went to start it to check the charging system, and then it wouldn't start.
01:46Okay. Slow down here, because I'm going to ask some questions.
01:49Remember, everybody, and Kian will learn this, and I'm sure his dad's probably explained it to him this way.
01:54We have condition, cause, correction, confirm. In fact, it's on my shirt today. Look at that.
01:58I'm flexing. Condition, cause, correction, confirm.
02:01So the condition is basically intermittent, no start, or had to be started.
02:06So the first thing, now you're going, condition, what's the cause?
02:10Checking the battery is great.
02:12So you load tested it, and it passed the load test.
02:15Absolutely.
02:15Okay. And then check for voltage drop. Your terminals look good, your grounds look good, so that's good.
02:21And then, so then you check the charging system.
02:24Well, I actually couldn't even start to check the charging system, cause I went to start it, and then it wouldn't start.
02:29But it's got a good battery in it. Okay, good.
02:31Yep. So I did put a jumper pack on there, just like the customer said, when you do that, then it would start, and it still wouldn't start.
02:37Okay. That's a wonderful thing, isn't it?
02:40Oh, yeah.
02:41No, I mean, actually, that is a wonderful thing, cause you're like, please stay broke till I figure out what's wrong.
02:46Well, and actually have the concern here.
02:48Yeah.
02:48While it's at the shop.
02:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:50Yep. So then, Tyson helped me. We checked for power at the starter while cranking.
02:57Okay.
02:57We had no power.
02:58Okay, when you say it had no power, so the crank signal wasn't getting, you had battery voltage to the starter.
03:04No voltage drop at the heavy terminal, but your crank wire, nothing.
03:11Nope, nothing.
03:12Okay, that would be the best way to check it.
03:14So then it goes through a prindle switch, right?
03:17Yep.
03:18And then, and a relay.
03:20Mm-hmm.
03:20I'm guessing, go ahead.
03:22Yeah, so I checked everything at the relay.
03:23Okay.
03:24I would check the prindle switch and all that.
03:26Okay.
03:26Everything at the relay works good.
03:28Okay.
03:28So then, tested everything, everything's good.
03:31It can bypass the relay with the jumper.
03:34Uh-huh.
03:35And the vehicle will crank.
03:36Okay.
03:37So we'll take the power probe and actuate the starter manually.
03:41So we know the starter itself is good, and the problem is in the wiring or the relay.
03:59Okay.
04:00But, so we need to get a new relay for it to just try that and then retest everything from there.
04:06So you think it's a bad relay.
04:07You jump the relay and it works.
04:09Mm-hmm.
04:09So the relay and your ground and your power, your relay, did you check?
04:12Yep.
04:13Is it a five pin or a four pin relay?
04:14Four pin.
04:15Four pin relay.
04:15You checked your power and your ground.
04:17And all four pins.
04:18Okay.
04:19Probably got a bad relay.
04:20Let's, let's, where is the relay?
04:23It's right here under the seat.
04:24Let me, now, before I look at this relay, in my brain I'm thinking, remember, God gave us
04:31five senses.
04:32One of them is smell.
04:34And you can, there you go.
04:35Look at this seat.
04:36Did you see what he just did?
04:38His daddy taught him good.
04:39Doesn't really smell that burn, doesn't it?
04:44No, it doesn't.
04:45You got a pocket screwdriver?
04:47And guys, the wiring schematic on all these, this is pretty, right there's your schematic
04:51of how that relay works.
04:53Mm-hmm.
04:53So that, that is what's energizing and going down to the crank wire.
04:58So sometimes what I like to do, and I think I got a bad relay, is I like to, you know,
05:02I like to know why things don't work.
05:06Did you, do we have another four prong relay in there?
05:08There isn't.
05:09There's only five prongs.
05:10Ah!
05:11That's always nice.
05:12If you get another relay, just swap them out.
05:15Absolutely.
05:15You know?
05:16So, you already know all these tricks, don't you?
05:18Mm-hmm.
05:19Your dad, I'm so happy, dude.
05:20I'm so happy that all these tricks you already know.
05:23We don't have to teach you anything.
05:24Why don't you grab that so I don't, see if I can get this last one here and get it out
05:28of there for you.
05:29There you go.
05:31Okay.
05:32Yeah, there's nothing.
05:38Well, it's not burning shut.
05:40The one thing I have seen when they look good, because they have the little electromagnet
05:45that moves the contact.
05:46Yes.
05:46Because that'll go bad and you won't see anything.
05:49So.
05:50And the contact in here looks pretty charred, actually.
05:54There's a pretty good burn spot.
05:56Oh, there is?
05:56Yeah.
05:57The contact in here.
05:58If you've got a good power in the ground and then your crank signal and it's not coming
06:02through there and then it doesn't crank, I'd hold the key in the position and then do that.
06:07And then see if it cranks.
06:09Okay.
06:09You know, just to, I would physically operate the relay.
06:14Okay.
06:14And just, you know, with it apart like that.
06:16And then see if that, that's kind of another way you could confirm, yeah, I got a bad relay.
06:20Okay.
06:20Well, let's do that right now.
06:21Yeah, let's do it.
06:23Can you actually get your fingers on that relay?
06:25I can.
06:25Oh, it's easy to.
06:26It's right here.
06:27Okay, I'm holding.
06:28You're holding?
06:29Yep.
06:29Cool.
06:29See that?
06:33Mm-hmm.
06:37A lot of times, so the relay is burned.
06:40You won't be able to see it in the video, but the contacts are burned on that relay.
06:44So again, just a little trick.
06:46We'll get a new relay and we'll see if that takes care of it.
06:49A little longer than a few minutes later.
06:52Well, I heard we got you a second relay.
06:54Yep.
06:55So this relay actually tests good this time.
06:57Okay.
06:57With that, I got it to crank for about 30 seconds, but it wouldn't start, and then it just stopped cranking altogether.
07:04So it's still intermittent and acting funny.
07:06Exactly.
07:07So I would tell you, have you checked your powers and your grounds yet at that relay?
07:12Yes.
07:13And are you losing them or something?
07:15Because that's weird.
07:16So intermittently, we're losing power at one of those pins.
07:19Which pin is it?
07:21Pin 86 right here.
07:23Okay, cool.
07:24So you pulled your die.
07:25And where does that pin go to?
07:26So this one goes to the fuel pump relay, which took me a while to find out what it is.
07:32So that relay's not down on this fuse box?
07:34It's actually that yellow one right next to it.
07:36Oh, okay.
07:36So 86 here doesn't have power, and go up here to 85 on that one, and it doesn't have power, which comes over here from the ECM.
07:46So then I grabbed the scan tool.
07:48I was like, well, maybe we got codes.
07:50Maybe there's something freaked out.
07:51Right.
07:52Maybe we got a bad ECU or something.
07:53Yeah, exactly.
07:54So I connected the scan tool, and there was no communication.
08:00Whoa.
08:00Yeah, so that's when I was...
08:03So now you do have a power ground problem, but it's not there.
08:06It's somewhere up the line.
08:07And I'm honestly...
08:08It's up the river, so to speak.
08:10Yeah, well, and we could still have a bad computer.
08:12And I'm over here trying to find that out.
08:14Okay.
08:14There's a relay right here in this...
08:16Yeah, everybody, look, I want to show you.
08:18This is a...
08:19And now you don't know this, because I know you haven't worked on many of these.
08:23Mm-hmm.
08:23That's a problem, bro.
08:25That's a problem on the sprinters.
08:29These go bad.
08:30These main fuse blocks here.
08:32So you might find the problem in there, but I mean, so is that where you're headed?
08:36Is that why you got this all tore down?
08:37Exactly.
08:38That's where I'm headed.
08:39So there's this relay right there.
08:41You can see the gray one right there.
08:42Uh-huh.
08:42And it is this relay right here that turns onto these...
08:48All those fuses.
08:49Yeah, to all these different...
08:50All those...
08:50Yeah, okay.
08:51To turn on the ECM, which is what supplies the power.
08:54Okay.
08:55And it runs over here to fuse 16 and 17.
08:59It's two right here.
09:00Okay.
09:00They don't have power either.
09:03So now I'm trying to figure out what's going on with that relay.
09:06And when it cranks, you do have power.
09:09When it cranks, I do.
09:10You have power everywhere you need it.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Okay.
09:13All right.
09:13I'm going to let you finish up, but my history, you know, the old hard drive here, is telling
09:18me you're going to have a bad fuse box here.
09:20Okay.
09:20That's not an uncommon thing, but verify that because that's what good mechanics do.
09:24We don't hunt with the shotgun.
09:25We hunt with the rifle.
09:26Mm-hmm.
09:27Verify that and then let me know.
09:29Okay.
09:29Thanks, dude.
09:30Many, many minutes later...
09:32Dude, I'm getting ready to go home and I was hoping I'd get some good news.
09:37The guys told me that they ordered a part for you on this.
09:39Did you get this thing fixed?
09:40I did.
09:41Oh, my gosh.
09:43And what did it end up being?
09:45It was just like you thought.
09:46That fuse box right there was bad.
09:48It was...
09:48Where's the old one?
09:49The old one's right here in the box.
09:50OE part, Mercedes-Benz.
09:55Mm-hmm.
09:56And it was this.
09:57It's working great now?
09:58Yes.
09:59As soon as I put that in and put the...
10:02So this is the old one?
10:03All together.
10:04Yeah, that's the old one.
10:05Fired right up.
10:06So you had to take all the fuses and all the relays?
10:09It came like this?
10:10Mm-hmm.
10:10And that's the new one in there?
10:11Yep.
10:12Prove to me this thing starts, bro.
10:14Every time.
10:16Without fail.
10:18Oh, yeah, baby.
10:19I love it.
10:20Mm-hmm.
10:20Okay, cool.
10:21You know what I want to do real quick?
10:23I want to open this up.
10:24I've never opened one up since it's fixed and everything.
10:27I want to open one up and see if we can find out, like, what is causing it.
10:30Because it's in a spot.
10:31It's not got water issues.
10:33No.
10:33You know?
10:34And I don't smell anything burned up.
10:37But I'm going to just take it apart for just because I love to know.
10:40Yeah.
10:41Let's see what we got.
10:44There's that.
10:45You know?
10:45And I also got this that's even better.
10:47They're little pocket pry bars if you want.
10:49This is like...
10:51People want to know, why do you do this?
10:55Because this reminds me of when I was a little boy and I wanted to know why my digital clock
11:00didn't work.
11:00I wanted to know why my radio didn't work.
11:04I was never able to fix them.
11:07But I always like to tear them apart.
11:09You ever tear your toys apart to figure out how they work?
11:12Heck yeah, dude.
11:12Even when they were fully functional and then they weren't after?
11:15Oh, yeah.
11:15Didn't you do that?
11:16Oh, yeah.
11:17Drive your parents nuts.
11:18Exactly.
11:20But my parents, God rest their souls, both said, you know, years ago before they passed away
11:26that they had forgiven me because they saw that it actually was a good thing.
11:31That, you know, all that curiosity gave me a life.
11:38So that was good.
11:39I think almost anyone that fixes things later in their life, that's where it started.
11:44Yeah.
11:45Okay.
11:46Let's keep going here.
11:47Yeah.
11:48I just wanted to know how things worked.
11:49You know, I did one time, dude, me and my dad.
11:53My dad was an electronics technician in the Navy.
11:57Mm-hmm.
11:58And so he was a radar technician, you know.
12:00He was on ship a lot, but when he would come home, we'd do things.
12:03But there was a company called Tandy Leather Company, and it was Radio Shack.
12:08It was also on Tandy.
12:09And back in the day, this was way before you were born, you could buy a kit and build, like,
12:15a TV or a shortwave radio, you know, and me and my dad built a TV together.
12:22Wow.
12:22Yeah.
12:23And it worked.
12:25That's cool.
12:25Yeah, it was cool.
12:26I enjoyed that with my dad.
12:28I'm a little impatient here.
12:29I don't care that I'm breaking things because I just want to get it open.
12:32But, you know, this isn't allowing me.
12:35Oh, we've got to slide that out of there.
12:39We're going to use that guy instead?
12:40Yeah, pry that out of there.
12:46There you go.
12:46Good.
12:52So how are we going to get the rest of this out of there?
12:54Let's undo that stud right there.
13:06Oh, wow.
13:07It's kind of crazy looking.
13:09It's probably, look at how they build this in layers.
13:20Anyway, I don't, I don't see anything obvious.
13:24Mercedes-Benz Electrical Engineers or whoever's building these.
13:28What's the problem with them?
13:29Anybody ever actually taken one of these apart and figured out?
13:32There's a big old IC printed circuit board.
13:35You can see some of the circuitry in there.
13:38But I don't really see or smell an issue.
13:42But anyway, be aware of that on these sprinters.
13:44These do go bad.
13:45Well, yeah.
13:46Yeah.
13:47Okay.
13:47So,
13:49yeah.
13:49Okay.
13:50Yeah?
13:52That's good.
13:53Yeah.
13:53start.
