00:00So we're on our way over to Sparks Motor.
00:07Hello? Hey Dave. Sure man, I'd love to do that.
00:15Sure, I can come over right now.
00:18Home of the Diesel Brothers, Diesel Dave.
00:21Got an old FJ40, a Land Cruiser over there.
00:25It doesn't run, or if it does run, it runs like crap.
00:30And he asked me to come over and check it out and help him out with it.
00:33It doesn't have the original motor in it, so that's going to be interesting.
00:38Miles!
00:41Miles!
00:44Where you at?
00:47Hey, guess who called?
00:52Dave Sparks.
00:54Oh, yeah? Diesel Dave, yeah, okay.
00:56He wants me to come over and look at an old FJ?
00:59That's right up my alley, man.
01:00I guess he's got an old FJ that's giving me fits.
01:03He can't get as far as a buddy of his or something like that,
01:05and he wants me to go look at it.
01:07I know it's raining outside. Is this thing inside?
01:10Cool.
01:11All right, I'll be over in a minute.
01:12So I'm going to go check it out.
01:14All right, see you, dude.
01:15All right, okay.
01:17Hey, hey, hey.
01:23What a gorgeous crappy day.
01:26Don't do it when it's over.
01:27It's a change scene, not a deep down.
01:30Let each other the change be way.
01:32I'm out of change.
01:38Bye-yi-yi.
01:40What a gorgeous, crappy day.
01:56It's decent as Dave here.
02:26What's up, Dave? Nice to meet you finally, man.
02:30Nice to meet you, man.
02:31Pleasure. I'm excited to work with you today.
02:32Yeah, I've seen you, you know, people, I feel like, now I know what it feels like,
02:36because people come up and they say, you get this feeling like you've known the guy for a long time.
02:41Yeah.
02:41Because you've been looking at him on YouTube and stuff.
02:43Yeah, I feel like I've already met you.
02:44I've already had the feeling, you know.
02:46Yeah.
02:47Well, come on, save the project.
02:51Tell me how you got into motors.
02:54Oh, man.
02:54Or cars, or whatever it was.
02:56You really want to know that?
02:57Yeah.
02:58I started when I was 15 years old.
03:00It's a good story.
03:01I was walking by a taxi cab and limousine company in Miami, Florida.
03:04That's where I'm from.
03:06And I just loved it.
03:07And in Florida back, you know, man, that would have been 1975.
03:12Everything was out in the open.
03:13It was just a shed.
03:15And you guys would work on the cars.
03:16And I'd walk by that, and I'd see these guys, and I'd want to go work.
03:19And the guy kept running me away, running me away.
03:21And I finally said, look, put me to work for one week.
03:24You don't got to pay me if I'm a proper bother.
03:26I worked for two days.
03:27The guy said, I'll pay you.
03:29And that's how I started at 15 years old.
03:31And then, you know, I came out here when I was a little over 20, and, you know, just
03:36started working dealerships and stuff like that.
03:38You've had your shop for 35 years over there in San Diego, right?
03:4034 years.
03:42And now I've got two of my sons.
03:43I had five sons, and two of them worked with me.
03:45And one of my sons runs the machine shop.
03:48And then the other son runs, you know, the whole business and stuff.
03:52That's cool.
03:52You don't know this, but here's why it's a perfect time.
03:55I cut my teeth at a Toyota dealership for about five years in my career.
03:59Really?
03:59And the old FJs, I know this truck.
04:02Well, perfect.
04:02It's right up my alley then.
04:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:04So, I got a call from Caleb.
04:05You've talked to Caleb, right?
04:07Uh-huh.
04:07Caleb said, hey, this guy's got this old 69-line Cruiser.
04:11And it ain't got...
04:13Oh!
04:14It ain't got...
04:15It don't have a Toyota motor in it.
04:17No.
04:18Yeah.
04:18He dumped a lot of money into it.
04:20He's got his son, who's 18.
04:22He's going to be wheeling down the hurricane.
04:23His name's Darren.
04:24Really cool guy, but his son's super excited to have something he can wheel around.
04:29Yeah.
04:29So, he brought it here, and I was like, well, before we even look at it, I'm calling Dave.
04:35Well, the first thing I can tell you is, it's either a 305 or a 350.
04:41It is not an FJ40 motor.
04:45Aftermarket motor.
04:46Yeah, man.
04:47And...
04:48Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
04:50Well, you know, I'll tell you, the motor that came in here, it's a 2F.
04:56I'm trying to think of the code on it, but it's a straight six, carbureted, bulletproof.
05:01And here's why it's bulletproof.
05:03The motor was made for forklifts.
05:05It was an industrial motor.
05:06And the connecting rod, the width of the connecting rod is about that big.
05:09I mean, it's got so much surface area that it'd be hard-pressed.
05:15The motor, you know, it's a torquey motor like a diesel.
05:17The max rev on it is probably 3, 3,500.
05:19But that thing is a torquey thing.
05:23But, you know, old Chevy's fine.
05:26Let's find out if...
05:27Find out.
05:28Let's find out what's going on.
05:29We all know we need three ingredients, man.
05:32Three ingredients?
05:32Three ingredients, man.
05:33That's all we need.
05:34What are the three ingredients?
05:35Flour, sugar, and salt.
05:37Now, for this, we need oomph or compression, the muscle.
05:43We need spark and fuel.
05:46And usually what I like to do first is before I even look at, you know, we call those vitals in a motor.
05:50You know, you go to a doctor.
05:52The doctor's going to check your blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate.
05:55And if you find a doctor that writes a prescription without checking your vitals, go find another doctor, man.
06:00He's not very good.
06:01So we're going to check the engine's vitals here first.
06:03But what I like to hear is let's just kind of hear what it sounds like cranking on it.
06:07Let me just hear it.
06:10We might want to...
06:11We might want to...
06:12Got a hammer?
06:14Bang on that starter.
06:16It's a stick.
06:18It's got a button.
06:21Maybe it's not...
06:22Here, let me try that.
06:25You hit that.
06:33I'm going to bang on a starter.
06:36I need a hammer.
06:38I got one.
06:41It's homemade, man.
06:50Hit it!
06:55Hit it one more time.
07:00Okay.
07:05You know what?
07:11Since it's an automatic...
07:14And we got the shield over the bell housing.
07:17Have you heard this thing, Crank?
07:19Yeah, Crank's worked there.
07:21But these guys should know that.
07:23I saved it for you.
07:26Could be a battery.
07:27Let's get a jumper.
07:28Yeah.
07:28I mean, I put my hand on the starter and it's engaging.
07:32I see.
07:35Where's the toolboxes around here?
07:39Hmm.
07:39Half inch.
07:43I got it.
07:44I got it.
07:44That's it?
07:45Yeah, yeah.
07:45I see.
07:47It might just be the battery terminal's loose, dude.
07:53I guess I should include that a good connection is important.
07:57Part of the ingredients?
07:58Yeah, man.
08:03Sugar, flour, water.
08:05Let's put a battery charger on it.
08:11You got an extension cord?
08:15Screen camera.
08:15One, two, three.
08:21Let's thing up and see if we can...
08:23Let's see.
08:27Off.
08:27Okay.
08:37All right, we're on 200 amp boost, dude.
08:40All right, here we go.
08:41Let's get another shot.
08:41Okay, let's just let it sit for a minute and get some juice in.
08:48Hey.
08:49This battery is just toast, man.
08:55Let's do this.
08:55If I can get just a crank or two out of it, I'll know whether I got spark.
09:00And I need to know that, too.
09:02It sounds, the way it's cranking slow, it sounds like, you know, you got compression.
09:06Because if you didn't have any compression, because if you didn't have any compression, you just zzz, like that.
09:10So I need to...
09:11I'm going to grab a Phillips screwdriver.
09:13Oh, there, maybe that's it.
09:21Maybe that's it.
09:22Here we go.
09:22I got it.
09:23Okay.
09:23All right.
09:32Okay.
09:33If I jump, if I jump three feet in the air, it means you got spark, bro.
09:37Okay?
09:37Go ahead.
09:40Ah.
09:43Shit.
09:43You got a good battery, man.
09:48You just want to swap a battery, huh?
09:51That battery, actually.
09:52I usually want in the truck.
09:53Yeah, I think I got no needs.
09:54I'll start taking this one out.
09:57Look at him.
09:58Look at him.
09:59Look at his shoulders.
10:00Look at this dude, man.
10:01This is a 40-year-old guy, and he doesn't have the dad vibe.
10:05Let me point that out.
10:06Is that battery there on the shelves?
10:10Or overpriced?
10:10Heist tested it.
10:11It's got truck vibe in it.
10:12What?
10:12Heist tested it.
10:13He's got 12.5.
10:14Uh-oh.
10:15There's another one over there.
10:19All right.
10:20Let's see if we can get some electricity.
10:24Here we go.
10:25Ready?
10:25Uh-huh.
10:29Okay.
10:30Okay.
10:31That's got...
10:32I'm going to check spark now.
10:33That tells me I got compression, but, I mean, is it all equal in the holes?
10:38I don't know that yet.
10:39But let's do it again.
10:40Let's see if I can spark.
10:41Ready?
10:41Okay.
10:42Oh, yeah, baby.
10:43Oh, yeah, baby.
10:45Oh, yeah, baby.
10:47That's it, man.
10:50That's it, man.
10:55Dang, I was going to give a full carburetor seminar here, man.
10:59Ready?
11:00Let's go.
11:00Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:04Okay.
11:05Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:06Okay.
11:14If you got oil pressure, I don't...
11:18It sounds okay, but I was...
11:21The gauge ain't working or there's no oil pressure.
11:23Yeah, I mean, it sounds okay.
11:24But none of the gauge has really moved.
11:26I don't know what's working, what's not.
11:27He's got a...
11:28We got oil.
11:29...on his dash.
11:30We got oil in it.
11:31Okay.
11:32Oh, he's got a...
11:32Yeah, that's for the Phytec.
11:34It won't have the oil pressure reading on it, but this old hydraulic lifters, you'd hear
11:41them clattering if it didn't have oil pressure.
11:43Yeah, it sounded like it was doing all right.
11:45Well, magic, bro.
11:48It starts and runs.
11:49All I had to do was see your face.
11:50No, it's the power of the Dave's.
11:53There it is.
11:56I think that's it.
11:58Now, let's listen to it again.
12:00I want to see if it's hitting on all eight.
12:01Okay.
12:13So that'll tell you a few things.
12:25That popping is either you've got a flat cam, which this motor fame's for, or your ignition
12:35timing's off.
12:36Okay.
12:38So that's what we hope for?
12:39Yeah, but my old, my wisdom tells me it's probably not, because if your timing was off
12:47when I'm accelerating, it would be really laggy or something like that, or you'd hear
12:50it like pinging, like marbles in a tin can, and I'm not getting that.
12:57Usually, that's a flat cam when it's back running like that.
13:02Now, in layman's terms, for those people watching, when you say flat cam, what does
13:06that mean?
13:06One of the lobes where the lifter pushes up on the pushrods and opens the valves goes
13:11flat, so what happens is you don't evacuate or inject all the air.
13:18I mean, when I say evacuate, maybe if it's an exhaust lobe that's flat, all that pressure
13:23can't get out, and so on your next intake stroke, you've still got air-fuel mixture in
13:27there, and it's pushing out, and it's backfiring and blows up in the carb.
13:31Gotcha.
13:32Or, in this case, what's making a fire.
13:37Another way to keep your hands warm.
13:38Yeah.
13:39So, my next thing would be a timing light.
13:42Double check my timing, make sure my ignition timing is correct, and if it is, I'd pull the
13:51valve covers off.
13:53This is so easy.
13:54We'd whip the valve covers off on this thing, and we'd bump start it, and we'd basically
13:58look at each rock arm and the pushrod coming up, and we'd kind of visually look at it, and
14:04you're going to probably find the one, and that's part of the disassemble on it.
14:09You've got to get the valve covers off, the intake off.
14:12On this one, you know, we'd pull the motor, but you could, you know, because the cam is
14:19this long.
14:20So, you're going to have to get all this stuff out of the way, come through the front timing
14:23cover, get that cam out of there.
14:24In order to do that, you've got to have the valve covers off, the intake off, get the pushrods
14:29out in the rock arms, but the next step would be a new cam and lifters.
14:36But now, since you're talking to a motor guy, before I'd spend all that money to put a band-aid
14:43on a motor, like a good doctor, I'd want to make sure that the patient is solid, and what
14:48I would do is, it must have good oil pressure, I'd want to check that, but if it's got good
14:52oil pressure, again, we're back to the vitals, I've got eight cylinders here, I would want
14:58to run a compression test.
15:00That would be another way you could find a flat cam.
15:03You could run, in fact, now that I'm kind of talking out loud, I'd probably do that next.
15:07I'd run a compression test, and the hole that's got a flat cam, after I check my timing, check
15:13my timing if that's right.
15:15If it's not right, I'll set the timing right, fire it up, and try it again.
15:19But I bet almost lunch that it's the cam.
15:28So I'd run a compression test, and if I had, like, let's say the compression was low on
15:33this side, number one, one, two.
15:36So this firing order's one, three, six, one, eight, four, three, six, five, seven, two.
15:41So this is cylinder number one, two, three, seven, so let's say it was on one of this
15:48side, the odd side of this motor, the firing order of this motor, and I had low compression
15:52on this hole, number five.
15:54I'd pull the valve cover off, check to make sure that the pushrod's, you know, going up
15:59as much as they should, that I didn't have a flat lobe on the cam.
16:03And if I didn't, I had low compression, then the head's got to come off.
16:08What I'm saying is I wouldn't tear into the motor to do a cam until I knew that I had
16:11good, equal oomph compression.
16:13First step would be compression test.
16:15Yeah, I think so, because then you could ensure the customer, hey, I know I got a solid, you
16:22know, inside the cylinders, the rings are good, the valves are good, but you got a flat cam.
16:26Now, let's make, let's just, since we're talking, and I'm telling you, when you get a flat cam,
16:32a cam's made out of metal.
16:34The lifter's made out of metal.
16:36And when it goes flat, it's basically metal grinding itself apart inside the motor.
16:42And so, and so you just really have to go to your customer and say, you know, this is
16:51the problem.
16:52This is the things that can be caused when that problem happens.
16:56And as long as they want to take responsibility for it, you can put a bandaid on it, so to
17:01speak.
17:02If the press was off and it was the timing, you'd check that first.
17:05I will check, right now I'd check the timing.
17:08The timing light on this, I can do that if you got one.
17:11And if you don't, I can get, I'll come back with one.
17:15I'll do a two-part video and I'll come to your shop next.
17:19The lesson I learned from your video, though, that I need to start applying is, is your table
17:23here, where you put your parts, it's clean, and your tool box within one step of your tire
17:27right there.
17:28Have you heard?
17:29I'm always, always running around the shop looking for a tool.
17:33That principle came from a song by the police, Sting.
17:38Every move you make, every step you take, is costing you.
17:44I got a tow truck.
17:45I got a flatbed.
17:46I'll just come over here and grab it.
17:47We'll take it over to the shop.
17:49You want to do that?
17:50Do it right now?
17:52What time is somebody in here if I want to get up Monday morning, have it ready for
17:56you by the time you're here by like 7.30 or 8.00 in the morning?
17:59Hello?
18:00Hey, son.
18:01Yeah?
18:02Uh, are you busy right now?
18:04And if you are, just tell me yes.
18:06And if you're not, tell me the truth.
18:08Uh, no, not really that busy.
18:11I didn't...
18:12What the crap, man?
18:13You're working for me.
18:14You better get busy.
18:15Well, to answer your question, I'm currently running to the gas station.
18:18So no, I'm not busy, but yes, I am busy.
18:21Are you running to the gas station because you ran out of gas and that's why you're running?
18:25Anyways, what's up?
18:27I need a flatbed tow truck over here at Sparks Motors.
18:31I'll be right over.
18:33Sweet.
18:34Okay.
18:35Leave this.
18:36Just leave it like this.
18:37I'll open the door when he gets here.
18:38I'll have to go around back and we'll push it out.
18:39I'll put his screwdriver back.
18:42And I had a, uh, I'll put this stuff inside.
18:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:48And then, uh, my son, Joe, and do we need to push it out or you got guys who can help
18:54you do it?
18:55I got guys.
18:56Is he in the flatbed right now?
18:57No, no, no, no, no.
18:58I'll probably get a half an hour before he gets there.
18:59I don't know what he's doing.
19:00He should be in the machine shop.
19:01He's running.
19:02He ran out of gas.
19:03He's running to the gas station.
19:04That's what I say.
19:05My kids, I, I do that all the time to them.
19:08And they go, oh, dad, get alive.
19:10Okay.
19:11Okay.
19:12This is great.
19:13Sounds good.
19:14I guess we're done.
19:15Thanks.
19:16We'll see you over the shop in a little bit.
19:17It's been a real, been a real pleasure meeting you.
19:19Pleasure's all mine.
19:20I'm excited to do it again Monday.
19:21Yeah.
19:22Hey, are you in the truck?
19:40Yeah, I just started it up.
19:42I'm getting ready to leave.
19:43Okay.
19:44Hey, when you pull in, just pull into the front.
19:46But they're going to let you in their yard to go around back.
19:49Diesel Dave is there.
19:54And he'll help you with it and his other guys getting it loaded up.
19:58And then just, just leave it on the flatbed when you pull into the shop and we'll figure out a place to put it.
20:03I think it's, I.
20:04Is it like a finished truck or?
20:06No, no, no, no.
20:07It's, it's a buddy's old FJ.
20:09It's a 69 FJ 40 cruiser.
20:12That's guys dropped to 350 in it.
20:16Okay.
20:17And anyway, go get it.
20:22And you can meet Dave and bring it to the shop.
20:26And I'll talk to you soon, son.
20:27All right, bud.
20:28All right, cool.
20:29You got it, grab it?
