00:00our planet is under threat like never before this shouldn't happen it breaks my heart we
00:14lose up to 150 different species every single day oh my word that's actually crazy and a million more
00:23are threatened with extinction but we are on a mission to try and change that that is a big
00:32drop off put your eyes forward mate this is gonna be sunrise we're entering the unknown our job to
00:42find and film some of the rarest animals on the planet and help scientists to save them
00:52that's the last one yeah this is beautiful before it's too late that is destroying the entire
01:01ecosystem look at that I'm dead and I specialize in getting cameras into places where no one else can
01:08well it's pretty tight in it if a bear comes now I'm a goner I'm the enemy I connect to these animals
01:17through my camera lens this is extraordinary it's looking straight at me and I'm Aldo a former Royal
01:25Marines commando and team leader all right big man okay it's my job to keep V&A and deck safe you
01:34think this will take my way this might be my toughest challenge yet
01:47I'm looking forward to getting in there on this expedition we are heading to Java in Indonesia
01:58because we are looking for rhinos right pop quiz which rhino of all of them has the smallest on
02:08obviously the Java and rhinos copy it's like 20 centimeters in there 20 to 27 yeah seven centimeters
02:16means a lot okay in the horn department it's not the size doesn't matter can we just get to the
02:24jungle now yeah and stop this silliness our destination is the far western tip of Java a
02:33place where few people live welcome to the Ujung Kulon National Park that is wicked over there
02:47doesn't it yeah this remote jungle is a last place where you can find the Javan Rhino the rarest on the
02:57planet absolutely picturesque this places there are five species of rhino around the globe and all are under threat
03:09because their horn is a prime target for poachers and so in Java they're under heavy protection
03:18it looks like we've got company boys there's a military boat coming they've got a solar room going this
03:29looks serious we can't get into the Rhino reserve without special permission weapons as well they got guns
03:36so let's hope our papers are in order
03:39what are we doing what are we doing we're going we're going on to handle Liam Island we'll just get our
03:57translator okay they look serious these they all the place you want to mess up manifest yeah yeah yeah
04:08we're doing a patrol thank you we follow you okay you boys looked a bit worried there with those
04:30I'm not gonna lie if I was a poacher and them guys rocked up I'd be like take me away just don't hurt me
04:35man they look serious you would only be armed if you were dealing with people who were armed criminals
04:41and often those guys are heavily harmed well at least we know they're well protected they have to take
04:48this pretty seriously our base for this mission the ranger station is on a tiny island just offshore from the
04:58national park thank you welcome to the national park thank you nice to meet you okay nice to meet you
05:11let's go our host is park director all day and dono this is my team you guys based here permanently yeah
05:22mr. and dono heads up a team of Rangers and scientists collecting the data they need to save and grow the
05:32rhino population here do you know from that data how many Javan rhino you have we have 75 of Java and
05:42rhino that official tally is a tiny number of animals and they're facing a huge problem they're just not
05:54having enough babies an average of three Javan rhinos are born here each year for the species to rebuild they
06:03need at least five using camera traps the park has managed to identify most rhinos now they need detailed
06:16footage of rhino couples to work out which animal is mating with which and help get that birth rate up
06:23the problem is normally we just use camera trap the results sometimes very bad and that's where we can
06:39collaborate so we can learn together I can learn how to move through the forest okay and then I can
06:45teach you how I would pop up cameras and see what results we get I think that is good for yeah
06:53so our mission isn't just spotting rhinos it's helping the park to find and film mating pairs because
07:02there are plans for a revolutionary breeding program if we succeed Javan rhino will survive be careful
07:11Javan rhino can attack you yeah okay good luck I reckon this is probably a good spot to
07:23set up camp it's great the only issue here is going to be actually crocs but there's a nice breeze here
07:35what sort of croc we're talking about here saltwater croc so the biggest crocs which way do you think the
07:41crocs will come in last one to get the hammocks up is getting the tea on yeah all right I would rather
07:55not be the last the last one in the race so yeah my not game is terrible think I've won boys look at that for
08:06but getting detailed images of these animals in that jungle is gonna be tough even though they're the
08:23size of a small car the rhino stay hidden as they move through the jungle
08:29getting the shots we need will mean daily trips into the national park and the quickest way to do
08:43that back on the boat everything we need for filming is in these cases I feel like a little schoolboy
08:56actually like first day of school you know like kind of excited but more like more nervous because
09:02I don't really know what I'm getting myself into I can't believe we're getting wet feet tell me to take
09:07you over as commutes go it's a good one this is my first time in forests like this beautiful but
09:18there are dangers around every bend see that a big cock that was massive that's amazing how we went
09:29past that didn't even see it was about two meters long a good start blood pumping keep our eyes out now
09:36we might see another one we're getting off here guys that's as far as the boat can go oh great
09:45here we go this is how you get hurt just got to trust your boots in you if this is where I wouldn't
09:51be doing this luckily for us we're working alongside expert local rangers always love being in the forest
10:00with people that know the forest so well because you can learn so much without these people I won't
10:06be able to do my job at all even though each ranger can spend up to 20 days a month in the jungle it's
10:14so vast and dense most have never seen a rhino in the flesh can easily get lost here and now I'll just
10:23show you how easy it is Aldo just keep walking he's walking he's walking he's gone he's literally just
10:32walking a straight line and he's already disappeared it's just so easy to go missing in a place like this
10:36just keep your eyes open for ground sign as well when we come into these places ground sign just means
10:46any evidence left behind by animals I've got piss and there's loads of it here that section there is
10:53it's really interesting but it looks like it's some it's a very active area there's fresh rhino tracks
11:01but as fresh as they can get that is like the highway it looks like they've been crossing here
11:09streaming around here a lot that section there if you look at the color of the water it's slightly
11:14quite um murky if I can say and that indicates that they've been pouring around here quite a lot
11:21this murky puddle is known as a wallow and rhino couples they love them a lot of rhinos they like to
11:29poo while they wash so um it's quite a lifestyle they lead you know I don't think I want to bath in there
11:35myself it's like a rhino spa isn't it yeah this is a this would definitely be a good good place to start
11:41our strategy isn't just choosing the right rhino rendezvous it's about how we rig these hot spots with cameras
11:54until now the national park has used a grid of evenly spaced cameras
11:59to keep tabs on the wildlife a standard scientific method
12:03but I want to try something a little different I call it the cluster method
12:13let's get rigging you know let's get these cameras up as quick as we can
12:17just one location at a time rigged with multiple cameras just finding the perfect spots for our traps
12:25because more cameras in one place means less chance of missing the action down there would look cool
12:34reckon that looks about all right and more detail to identify which animals are coupling up
12:42cluster location one rigged and rolling
12:46but that setup will only give us daytime shots java and rhinos are known to be just as active
12:58after dark we know they move around a lot at night i reckon that's going to be key getting
13:04lights in trees and stuff so we can light up the forest i see you're messing around with your ropes
13:09i've got enough kit that i can get me and potentially you up a tree if we need to
13:13so there you go i'd rather you go up
13:22pretty grimy in here
13:24check out if you see any crops yeah we're using special infrared lights invisible to rhinos
13:32and perfect for our second filming location jump up here
13:38rigged high in the trees they'll light up this dating hot spot
13:43without killing the mood
13:45all right good time but we can only test them after dark
13:50some big spider's eyes up there oh yeah he's coming towards you as well
13:55he's flying up there look at him there's a spider right
14:04where i want to get to
14:06boy
14:11holy that was a big spider
14:15did you hear that come down i think it made it far as it fell that's how big it was
14:19let's get the shit out of me then so you don't mind being up there a little longer no
14:24no i'm all right good because you might have to be
14:28all right deck so i've got the light it's off yeah well i'm gonna plug it in
14:32yeah i'll see what it looks like on camera roger
14:38did you hear that what
14:42i don't know man it sounded like a sort of squeak coming from across the river
14:46sure it wasn't your backside no no no no too many beans at lunch
14:50i'll tell you what mate it was 100 definitely worth you going up there this could be love lagoon
14:56mate when them rhinos come in it's going to be a wicked shot man yeah
15:02safe man thank you mate that was awesome you think it makes a difference it was totally worth
15:07it because now it's like shining all over the river and i think we'll get some sweet shots of
15:11them rhinos when they go for a bath
15:17with our first cameras rigged
15:19over the next few nights and days we start to capture rare footage of the secretive animals
15:27that live here a shy sunder leopard cat
15:35an endangered green pea fowl
15:39and a pack of jungle dogs known as dolls
15:42it's a promising start now we just need some rhinos
15:52right oi lads lads lads whatever you're doing you've got to see this
15:57it's awesome so we've got a little buff in a waterhole yeah oh wow that's a panther right
16:04it's a vampire yeah look at that but there's more what oh wow
16:16that's it no horns so it's a female female whoa that lip is mental
16:23it's our first shot of a rhino and it's a beauty oh doesn't she look prehistoric
16:29it's a lone female oh oh man or so we think it looks like that look at look at the uh oh
16:40oh cheers man that done the husband and wife up here that is mental you got the female and the male in the same place
16:53if this is a mating pair it could be a massive result
17:05but something doesn't look right
17:09what is that these are claw marks the battle scars but what has she been attacked by to scratch like
17:17yeah look at it they might he's got wound there they are both covered in lacerations tough life in
17:25the jungle isn't it brutal
17:30so it's been pretty successful so far but the female has quite a few big deep scratches quite
17:38interesting to find out what that's from it's just um it's a bit of a mystery for us
17:47it's a bit of a mystery for us but it's a bit of a mystery for us but it's a bit of a mystery for us
17:57rhino scientists near karani and royce mahmood have been studying these animals for over 15 years
18:06maybe they can explain why the rhinos were wounded hi how's it going good busy so i've got some clips let's see
18:17nice nice they recognize the female right away it's
18:25denok and they've also identified the male and it's it's aria
18:34but what we were wondering what are these scars down the side and there's a big cut on her back
18:39they are together male and female it's the sign from their mapping oh wow
18:49but looking closer there's a problem yeah yeah we see that the defect right the shape of the ear is not
18:58normal oh yeah there yeah so it's like that one's up and this one's sort of yeah yeah
19:04the gene pool here is so limited that inbreeding has become a serious issue
19:12unfortunately i can't uh it's it's happened a lot in javan rhino so maybe they will like produce
19:20a baby with some defect at this
19:22that wonky ear is a telltale sign that denok the female is inbred
19:32i guess we were all quite excited by this because we yeah expect you know we we caught behavior of a
19:38breeding couple there and that's not all inbreeding may also have made denok infertile
19:46this might be why javan rhinos aren't producing enough babies and the clock is ticking is that the
19:55biggest threat then to the javan rhino for the longer term yeah yeah yeah for the longer term
20:00because uh inbreeding tend to reduce fitness of the of the animal to survive in the in the environment so
20:07without aggressive human intervention yeah the population will become extinct if nothing is done
20:13yeah less than 50 years wow but there is some good news
20:21the mating wounds we spotted in our footage show that aria the male is sexually active
20:29he looks healthy and strong and could be the perfect rhino romeo if we can help him find a suitable
20:38juliet do you think there is hope for the javan rhino definitely we still have that faith that's why we
20:48yeah we keep doing this we're pretty sure that uh we can save these species keep the faith yeah keep the
20:56you know that fresh air it's a hammer good stuffy every nine again you just need to do a bit of stretch
21:21i'm down here sneaking in an extra sharpening session i'm heading out with the trackers
21:31the main tool in the jungle is a machete and you kind of get judged on one how you use it and two how
21:38sharp it is
21:42while deck and v continue rigging cameras to find mating pairs
21:45i'm heading back into the jungle to help the scientists with a new task we definitely need to
21:53change our strategy pretty fast we are now conducting a dna study the dna profiling that we are doing now
22:04is we want to know the the genetic profile from each individual
22:11once they have these profiles nia can then identify the most suitable rhinos for the breeding program
22:22we don't want to just randomly choose the jeff and rhino we want to choose the best
22:28individuals and best means rhinos that are not too closely related to breed safely
22:34but there's a catch how do you collect the dna from the rhino by collecting the fecal samples
22:44so we're looking for poo i was born for this
22:49javan rhino poo
22:52and as much of it as we can find
22:55tracking is such a subtle it's an art form not really a science not only can they tell a rhino has
23:06been here but they can also tell which direction it was going in
23:12time to dust off my military tracking skills that mud doesn't belong there scuff marks here
23:20on the edge there's a very fine mark this is rotan it's obviously been pushed which means that the
23:27animal was moving this way
23:31but i'm no match for local expertise can you tell how old these prints are six seven a.m
23:38pretty close to them
23:46smell of rhino
23:50being this close to rhinos
23:55is as dangerous as it gets
23:57this is just told us to be quiet and stop us um he thinks there's a rhino or bad
24:08if it is then we need to work out what we're going to do from my point of view if we do need to
24:12run then all of us just sling your camera sling it okay and we just back up that way we'll follow
24:17back around that way back the hunter with the river back down no rhinos oh yes oh that's whoop
24:35but we have found what we're looking for not too much of it in the water so yeah
24:41the dna is still intact yep yep this is beautiful
24:48every dollop is packed with the genetic code of the animal that left it
24:54the section you're collecting is the outside of the bowl yeah the the the oily uh and shiny like
25:04this so that's the part of the poo that's actually touched the animal on the inside and
25:09and take some of those cells with it by matching dna like this to our shots of the rhino that deposited it
25:20nia and the team can check for genetic compatibility
25:25this is so cool
25:31we found one healthy male
25:33but now we need shots of a healthy female
25:39oh choc i'm coming over there do you think this will take my weight yeah yeah yeah so i'm back
25:46at love lagoon the wallow where we rigged the lights oh no let me try again yeah it will definitely
25:54take my weight
25:57that was good enough
26:02careful mate i almost made it we better have a rhino i'll tell you
26:11i'm hoping we've captured a healthy looking female for our male
26:15oh look at that amazing
26:24oh that's so good to see
26:26our lights have worked perfectly and we've got ourselves another pair wow that's cool
26:33but it's not quite what it seems neither of them has a visible horn
26:42because both are female
26:47capturing social interaction between females is extremely rare
26:54obviously when you see a male and female you know what's going on but
26:57with two females it's quite nice that they're just hanging out together
27:00and thanks to the cluster method we can see it all
27:07but to find out if either of them could be a good candidate for the breeding program
27:13we need to ask the experts i've got shots of these two individuals and i'm really not sure
27:19what they're doing yeah yeah look how they're like playing and relaxing they like siblings look
27:27how they're just resting together oh yeah yeah cute
27:31nia and royce recognize one of the rhinos immediately in this video you know it's like
27:37denok see the ears wow denok is the female we catch it before the one with the wonky ear
27:44but there's another surprise this female also exactly have the same exactly so and it's definitely
27:53two different individuals this footage appears to show two denoks one female it's it's denok the other
28:01one is completely new i think this is a new individual that we haven't found before really such a long
28:09time yeah yeah that's actually crazy yeah look at that the number's gone up by one yeah
28:17but this one's been hiding even we put many and many camera traps we just learned from today that we
28:24have a new individual this is big every new rhino is precious but their similarity to each other
28:33is a problem looks like the same right yeah they look like they could be twins or something
28:41with its same wonky ear the new rhino shows the exact sign of inbreeding
28:46that nia and the team are trying to avoid
28:54neither of these females are candidates for the breeding program
29:03we all packed up ready to rock up let's do it let's go find his rhino then
29:10if we're going to find our healthy male a mate we need to expand our search
29:16that's hot isn't it the horse slides are out as well our cluster technique has been so successful
29:23we're going bigger much bigger 100 cameras in over 20 hot spots running for over a year
29:35it's a massive operation because every new hot spot means miles of bushwhacking
29:44i'm just following the leader like a sheep early starts getting up every morning at four
29:50so we're going to be able to get a little bit more sweaty gear pretty grim and broken kit
29:55it looks like a spider decided to like make a a nest like on the lens
30:04last camera rigged
30:07we just got to hope our strategy pays off
30:14i think we're ready to rock happy yeah sweet let's do it
30:17bye bye camera
30:21and while we're gone our cameras will film every animal that enters a hot spot
30:29a family of banded pigs
30:34a critically endangered jungle ox called a bangtan
30:40and incredibly a javan leopard one of only 300 left
30:47and we're going to be able to do it
30:53but the question is have we filmed any female rhinos
31:01what are you expecting what am i expecting i'll never expect too much
31:09i'm looking forward to getting back into the forest
31:11let's hope that we've got something to show for all the hard work we've all put in
31:22come on let's have a look yeah yeah let's do it can't wait to see this
31:25so it looks like we've got loads of clips
31:35it's another female
31:37look at the hammer oh my god it's a full set of armor yeah they look like dinosaurs
31:45and there are no obvious signs of deformity you probably it's just crazy
31:52dude we're done and we've not only filmed one
31:56we've got loads of females and by cross-referencing our footage with dna samples from those areas
32:06the scientists should be able to see if any are a match for our male
32:14let me know when this is straight i reckon a bit lower that's perfect
32:19it's time to share the fruits of a genuine team effort
32:30and our guest of honor looking forward to seeing this park director are the and dono
32:39and all the rangers and scientists
32:41the rangers who rarely if ever get to see the rhinos they work so hard to protect
33:01and all our cluster method captured over a thousand hours of footage
33:12i saw in this video we can see the other side of the javan rhino using the cluster method your method
33:20is very very helpful for us i will adopt this method probably that
33:26and it's helped us to identify a rare female calf
33:37this is the new one and for aria the healthy male
33:45how strong you are a positive match with a healthy 10 year old female
33:51and dna checks on her droppings confirm they're not too closely related
34:00she's a potentially perfect partner
34:05over the next few years the scientists will begin the process of encouraging these rhinos together
34:12to breed the next generation of healthy javan rhinos
34:17so beautiful
34:29so
34:30so
34:36so
34:38so
34:40so
34:40so
34:42Next time, Armenia.
34:58Look at this!
34:59Just absolutely mind-blowing.
35:01Where Asia meets Europe, head off.
35:03I don't know how you're going to find leopards in this, though.
35:05It's pretty vast.
35:07Searching for just nine leopards.
35:10Hidden in remote mountains.
35:12This is no-go zone.
35:14And deep, inaccessible canyons.
35:16Oi, oi, oi. That's some drop, isn't it?
35:19It's only enough.
35:21Oh, yeah.
35:23Oh, my God! Show me!
35:40Oh, my god.
35:41Let's go.
35:43Oh, my gosh!
35:45Yeah.
35:51Oh, my God!
35:53Oh, my God!
35:54Oh, my God!
35:57Oh, my God!
35:58Oh, my God!
36:00Oh, man!
36:02Oh, my God!
