00:00Our planet is under threat like never before.
00:11This shouldn't happen.
00:12It breaks my heart.
00:14We lose up to 150 different species every single day.
00:19Oh my God.
00:20That's actually crazy.
00:22And a million more are threatened with extinction.
00:25But we're on a mission to try and change that.
00:31That is a big drop off.
00:33Look your eyes forward, mate.
00:34You know what I mean?
00:36This is going to be sunrise.
00:38We're entering the unknown.
00:40Our job?
00:42To find and film some of the rarest animals on the planet.
00:46Oh, I mean, I can't believe it.
00:49Show me.
00:50And help scientists to save them.
00:52That's the last one.
00:53That's the last one.
00:54Yeah.
00:54This is beautiful.
00:56Before it's too late.
00:59That is destroying the entire ecosystem.
01:02Look at that.
01:03I'm dead.
01:04And I specialize in getting cameras into places where no one else can.
01:09Oh, that's pretty tight, isn't it?
01:10If a bear comes now, I'm a goner.
01:14I'm Dianne.
01:16I connect to these animals through my camera lens.
01:19This is extraordinary.
01:21It's looking straight at me.
01:22And I'm Aldo, a former Royal Marines commando and team leader.
01:28All right, big man.
01:29I'm doing good.
01:30It's my job to keep V&A and deck safe.
01:34You think this will take my way?
01:35This might be my toughest challenge yet.
01:43This might be my toughest challenge yet.
01:47We're in Mongolia, a vast, rugged, landlocked country.
02:07Sandwiched between Russia in the north and China in the south.
02:12There won't be any rush hour around here.
02:16Nor a traffic jam.
02:17Nah.
02:17This landscape is absolutely insane.
02:21And we're looking for bears.
02:24It's like we're driving on the surface of the moon.
02:26But not just any bears.
02:30The rarest on the planet.
02:33The Gobi bear.
02:35Epic.
02:35This, believe it or not, is its home.
02:41Half a million square miles of desert and rock that shares its name, the Gobi.
02:49Are you guys holding up back there in that old van?
02:52Over.
02:52Something's gone badly wrong with the carpooling.
02:58We've ended up in this.
03:01A Soviet-style bus.
03:05But it is the workhorse of Mongolia.
03:08Perfect for these roads.
03:11This tin box is kicking off some heat.
03:14I was going to say you can stick on your AC, but you don't have any.
03:17I've cranked mine down to a nice, comfortable 13 degrees.
03:20Which is just as well.
03:24We've still got more than 500 miles to go to reach the area the bears live in.
03:30It's a cluster of oases.
03:32And our best bet for finding them.
03:35Yeah, it's a pretty bonkers place to be a bear, isn't it?
03:38Yeah, I kind of feel like they've got the short straw in the bear world, you know?
03:43It's going to be tough living out here, I'll tell you that.
03:44How does a bear survive here, you know?
03:52It is one of the harshest places for any animal to survive.
03:57You get two to four inches of rain each year.
04:00You can get that in the morning back home.
04:02Which is why the first animals we meet are these guys, Bactrian camels, native to Central
04:14and Northern Asia, with two humps, not one.
04:17Some guys need the bike.
04:32Hello.
04:33These are their camels.
04:48Ah, they have a little over 50 camels total.
04:5250 camels?
04:53Yeah.
04:54Here, have you ever seen any bears?
04:57Okay, man.
04:59How much further on?
05:03Do you think we need to go before we can find the bears?
05:12Cheers, thank you.
05:14But we already know for a fact it's further than that.
05:19Much further.
05:21Well, it's a harsh life living out here.
05:25It's not just harsh for the camels, it's harsh for them.
05:29Not to mention the bears.
05:31And even when we do finally get to where they live, they could be anywhere within an area
05:39of 18,000 square miles.
05:43Love this.
05:47This is so cool.
05:48Very few people venture this deep into the Gobi, and this is only the end of day one.
05:58It's my first time thinking in the desert, not just any desert, but the Gobi desert.
06:07The first night in the tent, I basically got a sleeping bag and a pillow, which I got from the hotel.
06:17Don't tell nobody.
06:18And it's my first time thinking in the desert, and it's going to be a beautiful night in the desert.
06:29The Gobi bear already exists at the edge of what's possible, but that could get even harder.
06:46A proposal for a new highway.
06:51Can you see that?
06:52Just like this one.
06:54Wow.
06:54That looks like a train track.
06:56Oh, my word.
06:56Could encroach on their precious territory.
06:59That is nose-to-tail coal lorries for miles, miles and miles and miles, that are bringing coal from Mongolia into China.
07:12Better roads and more coal mines could add millions of dollars to the Mongolian economy, but there would be a cost, too.
07:23That is basically destroying the entire ecosystem.
07:26Look at that.
07:26There are roads like this 100 miles to the east from here, so it's not even that far.
07:31Wow.
07:32So they want to build another one.
07:35I'm not a bear expert, but I'm guessing that a bear wouldn't cross that.
07:38No, they can't cross that.
07:40No.
07:40No way.
07:41No.
07:42No way.
07:43And these animals can roam over 100 miles to find food and a mate.
07:50So that is essentially what we're up against here.
07:56Some protection for the bears is already in place, but the Mongolian Ministry of the Environment is also applying for the Gobi Desert to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
08:15If that status was granted, any road construction anywhere near the bears could risk international outcry.
08:22So all we have to do is get fantastic shots of the rarest bear on earth to show UNESCO there's something here worth saving.
08:34No pressure, then.
08:35How's it going, boys?
08:40All good?
08:41Easy now.
08:42Yeah, yeah, we're good.
08:43V's loving it.
08:44He's loving this road, and I'm enjoying the view.
08:47How are you?
08:47What was that?
08:52I can't understand the Scottish accent, mate.
08:56I don't.
08:57For some reason, your Scottish accent is getting thicker and thicker.
09:01No sure what's going on.
09:03Over.
09:05I'm sorry, mate.
09:06I don't understand French.
09:07What did you say?
09:08It's going to be a long day.
09:14Day two starts well enough.
09:17It just feels like a never-ending journey, isn't it?
09:21But there's a problem.
09:24Hey, what's going on?
09:27We've got a flat tyre.
09:29So, when some of us are out in the scorching heat, changing punctured tyres, Declan's taking a load off and snoozing.
09:46Yeah, let's load back up.
09:55Only another 300 miles to go.
09:59And day three, quite like day two.
10:04Have you seen any bears?
10:06In fact, very like day two.
10:11Except it is getting hotter.
10:15Much hotter.
10:18So, you've always got to watch yourself when you're walking anywhere.
10:21There's me and my sandals.
10:22We've got ourselves a little camel spider.
10:24These things, they're not venomous, but if they bite you, it's nasty.
10:29And what they do, they chase your shadow.
10:33Look, look, it's coming down.
10:36But, yeah, it's so hot out here, so that's why this little thing is trying to find some shade.
10:44Climate change is pushing temperatures ever higher for the bears, too.
10:48Which makes them even harder to spot, as they hide in whatever shade they can find.
10:56Woo-hoo!
10:56Yeah, I can't believe we made it.
10:58Crazy.
10:58100 miles further into the desert, two days' drive from the nearest city, there isn't an animal or a drop of water in sight.
11:09All right, this looks as good a place as any.
11:12This bone-dry desert plateau will be our base for the next three weeks, as long as our supplies and water last that long.
11:28You know it's a race. It's always a race, Derek.
11:30Nah, I'm not racing.
11:36Whatever we do, I know I'm going to be the last one to get my tent out.
11:40I just can't wait to get behind the camera and start filming.
11:47Come on!
11:48Come on, mate!
11:50I guess this was going to happen!
11:52Wow, it's literally just not stopping.
11:54Come on, baby, come on!
11:57The evening winds that whip through here can reach over 100 miles per hour.
12:03Your tent was on the way to China there.
12:06Exactly.
12:06Your sun has just gone down just about an hour ago, and already it's bitterly, bitterly cold.
12:15Did you hear that?
12:16Yeah, that's the wind.
12:18I'm going to have to part with that all night.
12:19We're trying to find one of fewer than 50 bears in an area the size of Switzerland.
12:34And it's never been more important.
12:38Morning, mate.
12:39You sleep well.
12:40Declaring this area a UNESCO World Heritage Site could help keep any new road well away from where the bears live.
12:50Guys, I will not sleep trying to get something.
12:53I don't want these bears to lose their habitat because of this, if UNESCO can help.
12:59It sounds like what we need to do is divide and conquer.
13:02Because the distances are so vast here that we are going to be split up and operating in,
13:08I'm going to try and get a radio repeater mast somewhere up on the high ground here so that we can stay in touch.
13:15So I'm going to do what I do.
13:16I'm going to work my magic in these mountains and try to get as many remote cameras out as I can.
13:21For me, if you could get like a mother and a cop, I just think that's the symbol of hope, right?
13:28What I might do is just sit in my hide with less impact.
13:34Just trying to get as much as I can by the oasis because I know that's going to be active.
13:41So you guys are happy with what you're doing then?
13:43I'll be out of your hair as well shortly.
13:46Pretty much.
13:46As long as the big bear stays away from me.
13:49I might scare the bears to you.
13:51You never know.
13:52I could scare the bears to be your way.
13:53I don't want you to scare them at all.
13:55You just, you stay away from them.
13:57Never be relaxed with me.
14:06Mongolia has the sparsest population density on the planet and you can really feel it up here.
14:19If anything goes wrong, we're a long way from hell.
14:29It's a little bit more involved than I was expecting it.
14:33The whole mountain is falling apart.
14:37This is the highest point around and we just have to hope that the bears are out there somewhere.
14:56It's pretty simple, really.
14:59All I'm trying to do is raise this repeater antenna up.
15:04Declan, Declan, this is Aldo.
15:06Radio check, over.
15:08Aldo, this is Declan, over.
15:10Yeah, just to let you know, that's the radio repeater in location at the summit.
15:15I'm coming back down now.
15:16Over.
15:17Just watch yourself, mate.
15:19I don't want you to be a bear dinner.
15:23But bear dinner is exactly what I'm looking for.
15:28If I can find the animals and plants that bears like to eat, maybe I can find the bears.
15:36So I'm looking for an oasis because water means life.
15:41It's a tricky one.
15:43It's a tricky one.
15:47It's a tricky one.
15:49The location is massive.
15:58I decided to come here because it's wide open.
16:02I can get a lot if I choose the best vantage point.
16:08On top of that, finally, away from Declan Alto.
16:13Even the rarest animals on earth need to drink.
16:33There's an oasis just on my right, about 200 meters.
16:39There's another one here.
16:47Et voilà.
16:48I just have to pray that I have picked the right place.
16:58Oh, God.
17:02It's time to get off this mountain.
17:06Luckily, I know a shortcut.
17:09Go.
17:09And I can check for bears as I go.
17:30That was a nice little rappel.
17:33You will not believe this.
17:38Look at this.
17:40Well dug out.
17:45This has definitely been used more than once.
17:48And there's poo everywhere.
17:51So it's...
17:52I'm not sure if it's a den, but that's so cool.
17:56This is only about a mile and a half max from base camp.
18:03So this is good news.
18:07Declan, this is Aldo.
18:08Over.
18:09Aldo, this is Declan.
18:10Over.
18:11I've found evidence of quite a well-used long-term area that bears.
18:17It's been using the scat everywhere.
18:19Wow.
18:20That is absolutely incredible.
18:21I'd love to see it.
18:25Roger, over, over.
18:25Roger, roger.
18:26Roger, roger.
18:27Goodbye.
18:29I can't work like this.
18:31Amateur.
18:43At least those two have each other.
18:46Radio noise could scare the bears.
18:49So I am keeping quiet.
18:51I'd like to introduce you to my hide
18:56and sort of having a tiny little space
19:01for me to just have enough leg room to sleep in.
19:08And the most important thing is to have a portable gas stove.
19:14This will save your life.
19:16Boiling water for some ready-made meals.
19:19Making coffees here in the morning.
19:26All I need to do now is wait.
19:29The trail that Aldo found was promising.
19:42But I'm after the kind of cave a bear might use to escape the midday heat.
19:47And this piece of tech just made that a whole lot easier.
19:50I can't believe Dex let me in charge of his big drone.
19:55Wow, look at all those trails.
20:05So many trails.
20:06What is that?
20:08It's nothing.
20:09I'm just getting excited.
20:12It's just a boulder.
20:14A bear boulder.
20:14so we'll have a little look there might be a cave in here you see these caves is that a cave
20:21that's just a cliff that's a cave oh imagine you know what that's not that far away we
20:30can go and check that out when I checked on the binoculars from back there it didn't look like
20:46there was anything in there but I obviously can't tell how far in it goes so yeah just make a bit of
20:52deliberate noise yeah go for it trust me you do not want to catch a sleeping bear off-guard
21:04the thing is there's no there's no bear prints anywhere there's no scat anywhere
21:13yes true although it is not facing and out of the Sun
21:17looks like a bit of a dead end next time what I'll do I'll get the drone and just flying a bit
21:24closer I'll zoom right in and we won't have to bother walking up here you know what I'm saying
21:27I still haven't got anything yet and of course it's painful but it's only the early days right
21:43so I'm doing evenings as well just in case
21:49and the night vision camera is working well
21:56in fact it's a Mongolian to lie hair and definitely not a Mongolian goby bear it's very
22:26challenging to film this bear but it is a special place to be
22:31stars are believably mesmerizing to watch
22:39these are some of the darkest skies and brightest stars on earth
22:48I've been making only one wish to get to film this bear
22:57we've been here for five days now with no luck scouting for bears
23:08we need help luckily batoktok nasambak is a goby bear expert who works here in the middle of the desert
23:18hello mate hello you batoktok yeah yeah good to meet you man you in my head I'm just thinking
23:24where do you how do you find bears in this landscape when I first time come in the desert 12 years ago
23:31it I was also thinking like that it's crazy looks like empty yeah so how many bears do you think are in
23:40this area then around 30 up 50 but still nobody know that's crazy I literally had
23:51more people in my school class than there are bears here
23:57it's starting to feel like an almost impossible task we can't give up on the
24:03bears but tok tok has a hunch where to find it sometimes there goby bear there's a scratching
24:10on the rock and making a making a marking the good news these scratches have been found right where
24:20he's taking me but bad news the road is rubbish okay oh god oh jesus
24:32it's all right it's all right such a hard road yeah but then suddenly every single bumpy dusty mile to get
24:44here is totally worth it
25:02there's just a certain vibe here I can't really explain it but there's definitely like an eeriness
25:20there's just this tall towers of rocks I kind of like making it almost claustrophobic
25:29this is just I know there's something quite special about this place already
25:36what a beautiful beautiful place
25:41and hidden here somewhere is the animal that is an essential part of this unique ecosystem
25:54and they've left us a little something fresh bear shite every scientist loves this stuff
26:02it's very useful and important for the study you know yeah that means we're definitely in the right
26:10area for bears so this is really good news it's great start to the day honestly but this is what
26:18the tok tok has really brought me all this way to see and smell so this is the scratch rock so this is the the the rock where the bears come and leave their scent to just tell other bears that they're in the area
26:30and to do that they just rub up against the rock so they're doing the goby bear it's like a new dance move scratching at that getting down on saturday night
26:39it's almost like facebook for bears I would just love if we could get like a female maybe checking out for a mate and mating season starts pretty soon
26:49just think if we can just get that shot of the mid of the bear just a bit tighter on its face and features we can really bring its character to life
26:59and we need to to help win over the unesco decision makers
27:06because world heritage status for the area could help make sure the bears have a future
27:14but right now the threat to them is real so I want to see what we're dealing with up close
27:23it is absolutely massive
27:26coal millions of tons of coal from mines just like this
27:35and mines need roads
27:38major roads
27:41I think there's 18 and 19 coal lorries there
27:46this coal that's being
27:48taken out the ground now is destined to be going south
27:52we don't want that to potentially encroach on the bears habitat
27:56is that car coming
27:59we're going to have to move that could be a patrol vehicle
28:03okay vehicle coming
28:04camera's down let's get moving
28:06our only chance of helping the bears is to get really great shots of them wherever they are
28:20but they are living up to their reputation for being the revest bear on the planet
28:29still nothing
28:32not a sound or eclipse of anything
28:37it feels so lonely
28:40suddenly
28:41I've never felt this lonely
28:45you don't see anything moving at all
28:56and two weeks in we still don't have anything on camera
29:04either
29:05just woken up and still no sightings of bears they really are rare and very very difficult to
29:13film
29:14trouble is we only have a week's water left
29:18and while the nights may be freezing
29:21it's 90 degrees by noon
29:23I know we're in a desert so this sounds so obvious but it's unbelievably dry here
29:28like my nose is constantly crushing over
29:32you know my lips are cracking
29:35like it's just like mental how dry it is
29:38at least my remote cameras won't get wet
29:42I've still got more than 50 to rig
29:46and it takes me and the team hours to set each one up
29:50it would look really cool if we could get the bear shot walking up and stepping over camera
30:02but after two weeks alone in the wild
30:05all I've filmed is a few grainy shots of bats
30:09ruts
30:11and yet
30:13hairs
30:14it's not enough
30:16it's been really difficult to sleep
30:19I'm on the edge of the cliff
30:22I'm feeling anxious all the time
30:26it's mentally and physically difficult to handle
30:38I love to make a very important decision whether I should go somewhere else
30:45I'm on the edge of my ass
30:53but our remote cameras are starting finally to get results
30:59so not a bear
31:01but a koolang
31:02a wild ass
31:06three rare agali rams play fighting with each other
31:09and incredibly
31:12a snow leopard
31:14we weren't even looking for one of these beauties
31:17they're so rare that scientists can spend their whole life studying them
31:22and never see one in the wild
31:24we just have to be patient
31:28and wait a little longer
31:30but I've had enough
31:37but I've had enough
31:40hey lads
31:45what's going down
31:48I haven't filmed a bear yet
31:50how are you feeling?
31:57how do I feel?
31:59well I'm
32:01do you want to know?
32:03yeah
32:05I think I am struggling a bit
32:08yeah
32:09but this is the rarest bear on the planet
32:12like it was never going to be a cakewalk
32:15yeah
32:16it's almost
32:17an impossible task
32:19I'm not going to give up
32:26I'm going to try another one
32:28a spot
32:29six hours from here
32:30I think could be
32:32a possible
32:33a potential
32:35good spot
32:39six hours from here
32:40is well outside radio range
32:44V&A will be even more isolated
32:47but he's made up his mind
32:50I haven't gone many days
32:51you know
32:52I
32:54I really don't want to fail on this
32:59there's nothing else we can do
33:02except keep checking the camera traps
33:05oh there's a trigger there
33:10yeah
33:11and they're not looking too good
33:13they all look like they've been bashed, moved
