00:00The following program contains strong language and descriptions of real-life violence that some viewers may find distressing.
00:30I looked up at the door and I see somebody trying to ring the bell.
00:35I looked right at him. He was wearing a clown outfit.
00:39You can't help but wonder what would drive a person that dresses a clown and ring somebody's doorbell and hand them some flowers and a balloon and then shoot that person in the face.
00:53I was on the corner of the couch, which faces the front door, and I said, Marlene, somebody's at the front door.
01:00Love is one of the strongest motives for homicide. Love gone bad.
01:05The brutality of it is horrifying.
01:08My girlfriend was sitting right next to me.
01:12When a murder of a beloved mother happens just randomly, the first place you look is to the spouse.
01:18He was in a clown outfit.
01:20It's like something a movie's made of.
01:23It's almost like fiction, but it really happened.
01:27She opened the door and he handed her a small bouquet of flowers and two balloons.
01:33And all I heard were two shots.
01:38We thought she fainted.
01:42She looked at me and she shaked her head.
01:50We had all been riding in tears on my backside.
01:55Yay!
02:00She may haveku, but she fainted.
02:05I heard her!
02:11She was bearded.
02:12She's that skalimpo.
02:15She500 dive.
03:16So you live in Wellington next to the swamp, but it's really a pristine part of the world.
03:21I feel like I'm living in dreamland.
03:29Wellington is 18 miles west of West Palm Beach.
03:37There were houses, but in the middle, they built a private airstrip for airplanes to land and then taxi to your back door.
03:50In the 90s, it was peaceful.
03:55We felt very safe.
03:56And all of a sudden, the Aero Club was on the news.
04:00And it wasn't for good reasons.
04:02When people think of South Florida in the early 90s, you're thinking of waves and the ocean and the sand and flip-flops and sunshine.
04:21In the 90s, oh, shoot, I was crazy.
04:25Hang out, drink beer, go to the beach, play quarters, have a good time.
04:30Florida is a wacky, wacky area.
04:32We might be the sunniest state, but we have the shadiest people.
04:36I was the new reporter back in 1990.
04:51And each of the police departments had signals that we could use to find out what was going on in the field through the 911 calls that were coming in through dispatch.
05:00There used to be a saying back then, if it bleeds, it leads.
05:06Whatever the most salacious thing is that you can find, give me that.
05:11The call came in pretty early in the morning, right when I started my shift.
05:16And we heard over the police scanners that somebody had been shot at the Aero Club.
05:22We raced out here right away.
05:24As a crime reporter in Florida, you just didn't know what you were covering in the early 1990s.
05:36This is where it all happened.
05:38Takeoff plays.
05:44When I got here, this whole circular driveway and street was filled with police cars.
05:48And then all the media was parked all along down the street the whole way.
05:54And my photographer pulled me aside and said,
05:56Hey, Jim, I heard a rumor that the person that shot the victim was dressed as a clown.
06:04There was an individual standing at the door dressed in a clown suit, holding some balloons and flowers.
06:10And he came up with the gun and shot it twice.
06:12We knew it was going to be a very big story.
06:15It isn't every day that somebody gets shot by a person disguised as a clown.
06:20There were so many questions.
06:22We needed to find out who the victim Marlene Warren was.
06:26We needed to find out who the witnesses was.
06:41We needed to find out who the victim or someone who was warned or killed themselves.
06:45And we need to find out who the victim is.
06:47We needed to find out who the victim was an thief inição,
06:47who he is a liar now.
06:48I think he was a liar now.
06:50I didn't know what he's saying.
06:51Oh, God.
06:52I think he would like me.
06:53These pictures are a part of my life
07:01that I miss very dearly.
07:06This is my brother, John.
07:10That's me, Joe.
07:13That's my mother, Marlene.
07:16And my stepfather, Mike Warren.
07:23Beautiful blue eyes, beautiful smile.
07:35She taught me how to be strong.
07:40I was just 21 years old when my mother died.
07:46I was just starting my life.
07:48I will always keep her close to my heart.
07:58My mother was my angel in my life, you know?
08:01If I didn't have her, I would have been lost for my whole life.
08:08I miss you, Mama.
08:09Mama.
08:18I first started working hands-on in the investigation of the killing of Marlene Warren
08:25in the early 90s when I first came to homicide.
08:30Marlene Warren was a woman, at the time of her death, she was 40.
08:36And she had fallen in love when she was quite young with Michael Warren.
08:42She had two children from a prior marriage, and they had a good partnership.
08:49Quite a few people described Michael Warren as a charming fellow,
08:52and apparently, by all accounts, gregarious.
08:55He wasn't the wallflower, that's for sure.
08:58Michael Warren was a go-getter.
09:00You know, he knew he wanted big things in life,
09:02and he knew he had to go out and get them.
09:04I believe that was a big part of my mother being attracted to him.
09:08In their marriage, Michael Warren basically ran the car business, Bargain Motors,
09:15and together they had purchased rental properties.
09:20They owned several properties in 1990 that totaled over a million dollars,
09:25which was a significant amount of real estate back then.
09:29But their rental properties were in one of the roughest areas for crime in Palm Beach County.
09:38I worked for Marlene, though, for four or five years.
09:42I used to help her clean her apartments and get them ready for the next tenant.
09:47We smoked more cigarettes.
09:49We always found an excuse why we had to extend the coffee period.
09:56Marlene rented to people through Section 8 housing.
10:00She wanted to give these families a better outlook on life.
10:06And she went to her grave with a lot of people owing her money.
10:11But because they had kids, Marlene would not evict them.
10:14She wanted the children to have a roof over their heads.
10:18She was a real good person.
10:20She'd try and take care of people as much as she could.
10:24She was basically more of a friend than she was a landlord.
10:27I used to go to school with Joey.
10:30I think it was fifth grade on up.
10:34Joey and Marlene were very, very close.
10:37I mean, if she ever needed anything, Joey would be right there.
10:42And vice versa.
10:45What was important to her was a family.
10:48You know, sticking together through thick and thin,
10:51going through the mud and pulling each other out.
10:53You know, that was her motto.
10:54Marlene treated everybody in the neighborhood as her own kid.
10:59No matter what, who you was, she didn't care.
11:02As long as you didn't do her wrong, she'll do you right.
11:04She's always been that way.
11:07Or she wouldn't have me around.
11:09I was a bad influence.
11:10One of the more shocking elements of the Marlene Warren case
11:17was the fact that the poor woman was shot in front of her own son
11:23and several of his friends.
11:25That day, Michael Warren had left very early in the morning
11:31to a horse race track in South Florida.
11:37Marlene was enjoying a Saturday morning with kids making breakfast.
11:44Nothing should happen to somebody doing that.
11:46I woke up that morning.
11:51My mom was in the kitchen, and I had a few friends there.
11:55My mom was cooking eggs with toast, and she had the bacon,
11:59and she was asking us what we wanted.
12:02Yeah, we was just there to, you know, have fun
12:05and, you know, rock and roll and watch TV.
12:08We were eating our breakfast,
12:11and one of my friends saw colors at the front door
12:16and said, somebody's at the front door.
12:20We couldn't tell because it was distorted,
12:23but it looked like a clown through the glass.
12:28And she went to go answer the door,
12:31and my mom said, no, sit down, finish your breakfast,
12:34I'll get the door.
12:38As soon as she opened the door,
12:40we were looking, and she said, oh, how pretty.
12:44And we heard a bang.
12:55A woman has been shot on her doorstep
12:57at Wellington's Aero Club
12:59by a person dressed in a clown suit.
13:01Detectives say it's one of the strangest cases
13:03they've ever seen.
13:06It's been 30-something years.
13:08In my memory, I mean, it's still there,
13:12and I start to remember a lot.
13:15It was so quick.
13:18Me and Joey was dumbfounded for a split second,
13:20like, whoa!
13:23And when Mom hit the ground, it's like...
13:27It was devastating.
13:31Wow.
13:32It echoed through the house.
13:39It seemed like slow motion.
13:41It happened so fast.
13:43It was wild.
13:44It was like another world.
13:48After the clowns shot my mother,
13:50they put the flowers down,
13:52and my mom was right there.
13:53Marlene was on her side,
13:57and then she was bleeding out of her mouth.
13:59A lot.
14:01Her teeth were missing,
14:03and I knew something bad had happened.
14:04Blood was coming out of her mouth,
14:06and she was gurgling,
14:08and it was terrible.
14:10It was the worst day of my life.
14:16The clown had thick white paint.
14:19I mean, you couldn't see any skin,
14:21because I tried.
14:22I mean, I tried.
14:24They had, like, a jumpsuit on,
14:27a colorful orange wig
14:29and black boot shoes.
14:32The car was sitting there in idle.
14:35When they got to the car,
14:37they looked around.
14:39I saw some big brown eyes.
14:43Even when the foot went into the car,
14:45I saw it in slow motion.
14:49The clown slid right into the car.
14:52It was a white LeBaron.
14:54And just took off.
14:57They just walked casually.
14:58Like, no running.
14:59Just turned around, walked.
15:01Got in the car and took off.
15:08All I could think of
15:09was chase that vehicle.
15:11He was out the door,
15:13and you could see the two tracks
15:15leaving from the garage into the yard.
15:19I jumped into the car,
15:21just driving like a maniac.
15:24He'd come back a couple minutes later,
15:29said I couldn't find him.
15:30I couldn't find that damn clown.
15:32I just wish Joey would have called him.
15:34There were a lot of police there,
15:50and they were setting up the crime scene tape,
15:52and the paramedics were still there working on Marlene.
15:57At that point, Marlene was still alive.
16:00Everybody was hoping that she was going to make it.
16:03Marlene was shot in the mouth,
16:04and it entered into the back of her throat
16:07and damaged her spinal cord
16:09and immediately dropped her.
16:11One of the things I noticed
16:15is that there were still some remnants on the scene
16:17after the paramedics left,
16:19and you could see some blood on the steps.
16:23But there were also two mylar balloons,
16:25one that said,
16:26you're the greatest,
16:26and another one that was snow white
16:28in the seven drawers
16:29and a bouquet of flowers.
16:33There was very little evidence left at the scene.
16:36This happened so quickly,
16:37and the clown left nothing
16:39except for the basket of flowers and the balloons,
16:44and then the projectile
16:46that was inside Marlene Warren's body.
16:50In this case, much like every homicide case,
16:54when the team arrived,
16:57everybody spreads out.
17:00You've got some that are dispatched
17:02to look for the car that left.
17:04People were dispatched
17:05to try to locate the source of the flowers
17:07and the clown outfit.
17:10It's much like the tentacles go out.
17:12My questions were never about what happened,
17:15but why.
17:16Was this a hit
17:17because of the way that it was orchestrated?
17:20We just didn't know that day,
17:22but we had a lot of questions.
17:29This is archival footage from the early 90s
17:41from when our reporters were covering
17:43the murder of Marlene Warren.
17:45My name is Mike Magnoli.
17:54I've been a reporter for 20 years.
17:57I do a lot of crime stories.
18:00I like to dig up dirt on folks
18:04and scandals and controversy.
18:06That's my bread and butter.
18:07This was diving into our tape archives,
18:16a treasure hunt in a way,
18:19you know, trying to go back in time
18:21and see what happened here.
18:23This was a huge story
18:27and anytime there was a little development
18:31or something, you know,
18:32happening with the case,
18:34we're getting the camera out there
18:35and the reporter is going out there
18:37to chase down the story.
18:45The husband is suspect number one,
18:48always.
18:49And Mike was into all kinds of things.
18:52He's a renaissance man.
18:54He had a plane.
18:56He owned a racehorse.
18:58And he was starting to make
19:00some good money in that field.
19:04He had a couple of different businesses.
19:08Some of them are legit.
19:09Some of them maybe not so legit.
19:13Michael Warren had a used car dealership
19:16called Bargain Motors.
19:18He was an astute businessman,
19:20ran that business well.
19:21He had branched out from selling used cars
19:25to leasing cars.
19:27A lot of people,
19:28when they come to Florida on vacation,
19:30they need a car to rent.
19:31They find Bargain Motors.
19:34It wasn't like going into your local Mercedes
19:36or Lexus dealership.
19:38It was a pretty rough and tumble car rental.
19:41My name is Don Carter.
19:48I worked at Bargain Motors
19:50from Mike Warren
19:50back in the 1990s.
19:54I don't want to say this in front of women.
19:56We found more dildos and sex toys
19:57in these cars.
19:58We could start our own
19:59goddamn porn business.
20:02You know,
20:03it's a freaky shit these people do.
20:04I have an identical twin named Ronald.
20:13He's two minutes older than me.
20:15He also worked for Mike Warren.
20:18We didn't start off working for him.
20:20We was hanging out with him.
20:21And then we were together so much,
20:23Mike said,
20:23mother didn't work for me.
20:24So that's how we got started.
20:27But Mike is a fun-going kind of guy.
20:29You know,
20:29he's the life of the party.
20:32Get Bargain Motors.
20:33Our clientele wasn't the greatest.
20:35We took people that had credit cards,
20:37normal people.
20:38But we also took the rejects
20:40that nobody wanted.
20:41Basically,
20:42under 25 years old,
20:43bad driving record,
20:45whatever it is.
20:46You know,
20:46our clientele is bad.
20:47We'd find guns in our vehicles.
20:49I found fingers,
20:51numerous other things.
20:53Well,
20:54we found a gun.
20:54Throw the finger out,
20:55keep the gun.
20:57I mean,
20:58a basic car rental,
21:01600 bucks a week.
21:03Some of them are paying
21:036,000 a week.
21:05It made Mike Warren
21:06a wealthy person.
21:11We were making a lot of money.
21:13You know,
21:13we didn't have any kind of
21:15restrictions,
21:16law-wise.
21:17You know,
21:18we thought,
21:19good luck trying to take us down.
21:21You know?
21:21You know?
21:28We were making a lot of money.
21:29In 1990,
21:30I was a detective
21:31with the sheriff's office.
21:34We all worked independently.
21:36It was hard
21:37because you really
21:38had to do a lot of footwork.
21:40You know,
21:41we didn't have computers
21:42back then.
21:45South Florida
21:46is the fraud capital
21:47of the world.
21:48There's a lot of financial crimes.
21:50There's a lot of homicides.
21:52The sheriff's office
21:53is constantly under scrutiny
21:55by the public.
21:58Well,
21:58they were trying
21:58to solve the crime.
21:59They were trying
22:00to find a perpetrator.
22:01So,
22:02in order to do that,
22:03they immediately
22:04talked to the young people
22:05that were in the house.
22:06It was a very simple crime
22:27if you think about it.
22:28Even as crazy
22:29as everything that happened,
22:31there isn't a lot of evidence
22:33in that
22:33except for eyewitnesses.
22:35You often hear it said
23:03that an eyewitness account
23:06can be very unreliable
23:07because you've just seen
23:09this shocking,
23:11horrible thing.
23:12So,
23:13there were conflicting
23:14eyewitness accounts
23:15about the clown's attire.
23:18The hairstyle
23:19on the clown
23:20was different.
23:22Some thought
23:23the clown
23:24was wearing a mask,
23:26but some thought
23:27that it was just makeup.
23:28the perpetrator
23:30was dressing
23:30as a clown
23:31because they wanted
23:32to conceal
23:33their identity.
23:35The work.
23:37Law enforcement
23:38were trying
23:38the best that they could,
23:40but it was
23:40so unusual
23:42that the suspect
23:44could be completely
23:45disguised as a clown
23:46and not really
23:47gather attention
23:48from anybody.
23:49they have a killer,
23:51but they're
23:51in a clown costume.
23:53So,
23:53that is
23:54right out of the gate
23:55a big problem
23:56for investigators
23:57and for prosecutors.
23:5940-year-old Marlene Warren
24:09is fighting
24:09for her life
24:10here at this
24:11Palm Beach hospital.
24:12Friends and family
24:13constantly by her side.
24:19I was at the hospital
24:20and it was just hell.
24:22I didn't know
24:23how to do anything
24:24but hold her hand
24:25and try to get
24:26her attention.
24:29I just wanted
24:32to see
24:32that she was
24:33going to be okay.
24:36My grandmother
24:36had to make
24:37a big decision,
24:38you know,
24:39they,
24:39I couldn't,
24:41I wasn't going
24:41to make it.
24:42I know I wouldn't
24:43have made it
24:44if it was up to me.
24:45I would have
24:46never made it.
24:49Uh,
24:50they had to
24:52turn the machine off
24:53and my grandmother
24:54told me
24:54she was very honest
24:56with me
24:56and I kind of knew
24:57myself
24:59after the third
24:59day that
25:00we were,
25:02we were going
25:04to lose my mother
25:05and,
25:06uh,
25:08it was,
25:10it was,
25:10it was horrible.
25:18She was
25:19the best person ever.
25:21Why does it always
25:21happen to the angels?
25:22why do the demons
25:26hate the angels
25:26so bad?
25:30Joe lost his mother.
25:32He witnessed
25:33his mother
25:34being murdered.
25:35He was unable
25:36to catch the person
25:37that murdered
25:38his mother.
25:39So,
25:40ever since then,
25:42he's been
25:43basically lost.
25:44when I lost her,
25:47I,
25:47I lost a part
25:48of me.
25:50A big part
25:51of me.
25:53She's like
25:53a sister to me.
25:56And I wanted her
25:57to be godmother
25:58of my kids.
25:59I got beautiful
26:03memories though.
26:05Memories that
26:05nobody can take
26:06away from me.
26:11Ellie,
26:12she got to hold
26:13my daughter
26:13and my son,
26:15her godchild.
26:17So,
26:18they're happy
26:19memories.
26:20Every memory
26:20I have of her
26:21is happy.
26:22you couldn't
26:24help but not
26:24be happy
26:25around Marlene.
26:39The murder
26:40of Marlene Warren
26:41was definitely
26:42one of the biggest
26:43stories back
26:44in 1990
26:45for sure.
26:46It was on
26:47the front page
26:48every day
26:49of all the local
26:49papers.
26:50National News
26:51was covering it.
26:53There was all
26:53sorts of buzz
26:54going around
26:54the neighborhood
26:55and we're like
26:57wow.
26:58I was very
26:59surprised
27:00that it happened
27:01in the Aero Club.
27:02I was kind
27:03of shocked.
27:04Once the public
27:05learned about
27:06the murder,
27:06one of the things
27:07that was really
27:08surprising was
27:09that there were
27:09a ton of clown
27:10sightings that
27:11just started
27:11popping up
27:12everywhere.
27:13Somebody manned
27:14a phone
27:15in the detective
27:16bureau that people
27:17were calling in.
27:18So, it was all
27:19over the media.
27:20You've seen a clown.
27:22call this number.
27:24There were so many
27:25calls from residents
27:26saying, hey, I think
27:27I saw a clown lurking
27:29in the woods.
27:30After talking to
27:31these people,
27:33some of them you
27:33could immediately
27:34dismiss.
27:36It used to drive me
27:36crazy because I'd be
27:37the one to have to go
27:38chase the leads
27:39for the sightings
27:40and they never
27:41turned into anything.
27:43People were just
27:43very fearful.
27:44I was on a committee
28:02to make the rules
28:03for the Aero Club.
28:05There was somebody
28:05from the developer
28:06and there was myself
28:07and then a man
28:09by the name
28:10Mike Warren.
28:10We would probably
28:12meet once a month
28:14in the clubhouse.
28:16We talked about
28:17what would help
28:17this be a better
28:18aviation community.
28:23A few weeks
28:23after the murder,
28:24we had a committee
28:25meeting and I went
28:26there a little early.
28:28I think Mike came
28:29in right after me.
28:30I was surprised.
28:32I thought, well,
28:32this is interesting.
28:33His wife was just
28:34murdered.
28:34I was a little
28:36uncomfortable.
28:37Didn't know what to say
28:38and I just asked him
28:40point blank,
28:42Mike, did you have
28:42anything to do
28:43with this murder?
28:45And he said no
28:46and gave me
28:48a very succinct,
28:50quick,
28:51where he was,
28:51what he was doing,
28:52where he was going
28:53and he had witnesses.
28:55Didn't say a word
28:56about Marlene.
28:57I know how
28:58I would have felt
28:59if it was my wife
29:02at the time.
29:03I wouldn't have
29:04been nonchalant.
29:04In every domestic
29:07homicide,
29:08the significant other
29:10is always a person
29:11of interest
29:12until they're excluded.
29:14On the day of the crime,
29:16law enforcement
29:16immediately interviewed
29:18Michael at the
29:18sheriff's department.
29:23With me in the
29:24interview room
29:25is a Michael
29:25Kenneth Warren.
29:26What type of
29:27relationship did
29:28you and your wife
29:29have?
29:32I've never loved
29:33anybody as much
29:34to find our love
29:35term on my life?
29:37You got a long,
29:37long?
29:38I always got a long,
29:39long.
29:41You always have
29:42your ups and downs,
29:43but, you know,
29:45we've been together
29:4520 years.
29:48From the very beginning,
29:50there wasn't a sense
29:51of any potential motive
29:53from Michael Warren
29:54because they were
29:56led to believe
29:56that, oh,
29:58this was a loving
29:59marriage,
29:59they had no problems,
30:01there were no issues.
30:03What time did you
30:03leave the house this
30:04morning?
30:04You stayed there last
30:05night.
30:05Yeah, I leave
30:06every morning
30:07about 8 o'clock.
30:10And you left this
30:11morning at that time?
30:11Same time.
30:12Where did you go
30:13from after you left
30:14the house?
30:14Straight to work.
30:16Did you stay at the
30:17business all day?
30:17Probably left about
30:1911-15, 11-20.
30:22Mr. Bush, the man
30:23that drove me over
30:25here, would travel
30:26to Miami.
30:28What were you
30:29going to Miami for?
30:30Horse races.
30:33They discovered
30:34pretty quickly that
30:35he'd been in a car
30:36in the company of
30:38other people,
30:39driving southbound to
30:40a horse race track
30:42in South Florida.
30:45So he had an
30:46airtight alibi for
30:47being present.
30:49Back in our 90s,
30:51the cell phones
30:52used to be a block
30:53about this big.
30:54Not many people
30:55had them.
30:56Their cell phones
30:56were just coming
30:57out.
30:57They were about
30:57this big.
30:59We had one.
31:01The day of the
31:02murder, I had a
31:03phone.
31:03I said I was only
31:04a couple blocks
31:05away from Bargain
31:06Motors.
31:07Mike is at the
31:08car lot.
31:09You know, he's
31:09going to call the
31:10race cars to the
31:11races.
31:12He was pissed,
31:13calling the phone
31:13every two seconds.
31:14Get your fucking
31:14ass back.
31:15I need a fucking
31:15phone now.
31:16I need you to get
31:17back in with a
31:17fucking phone now.
31:19I said I'm only
31:19a couple blocks
31:20away.
31:20I'll be right
31:20there, you know.
31:21So, fuck, I need
31:22that phone now.
31:23I can't go until
31:23you get back.
31:25And so I got
31:26back.
31:26He's real pissed,
31:27grabs it around
31:27my hand real
31:28forcefully.
31:29He takes off to
31:30the track.
31:31That makes me
31:32think that he
31:33knew he had a
31:34phone call coming
31:35in.
31:37Any other time,
31:38he wouldn't give
31:38a shit about the
31:39phone.
31:39This morning,
31:43you were headed
31:44south toward Miami?
31:45Right.
31:45And how were you
31:46contacted?
31:47I don't know,
31:47what happened
31:48there?
31:48Telephone,
31:49I got a phone
31:49call when we
31:51were down to
31:52about Wulbright
31:54Road.
31:55On your portal
31:56phone?
31:56Right.
31:57And who was
31:57that?
31:58That was Joey
31:59calling last
32:00time.
32:00He told you
32:01about that
32:01soon.
32:02And then
32:03what did
32:03you do?
32:03We turned
32:04around and
32:04went straight
32:04to the
32:05hospital.
32:05I'm
32:18Christopher
32:18DeSantis.
32:19I'm an
32:20attorney in
32:21southern Florida.
32:23I earned
32:24the nickname
32:25Mad Dog.
32:28Because I
32:28would never
32:29let go.
32:32In 1989,
32:34I was
32:34representing
32:34Joey Aaron.
32:37Joey got
32:38in some
32:38kind of
32:39trouble.
32:39He went
32:39to a
32:39party.
32:41Somebody
32:41pulled out
32:41a knife.
32:42They stabbed
32:42another kid.
32:43So they
32:43charged
32:44everybody.
32:45So Marlene
32:45had to get
32:46an attorney
32:46to represent
32:47Joey.
32:51I got
32:52into some
32:52trouble with
32:53some friends.
32:54And this
32:56lawyer, Mike
32:58asked him
32:59some questions.
33:00You know,
33:00some off-the-wall
33:01questions.
33:02We came
33:04out of a
33:04crowded
33:04courtroom
33:05and he
33:06asked me,
33:07can a
33:08husband
33:08inherit
33:09from his
33:10wife
33:11if he
33:12murdered
33:12her?
33:15I pull
33:16him aside
33:17and I
33:18leaned over
33:18to him
33:19and said,
33:20law says
33:20that if
33:21you murder
33:22your wife
33:22that you
33:24cannot inherit.
33:25However,
33:26there are
33:26other circumstances
33:27where you
33:28might inherit.
33:28then I gave
33:30him a
33:30what-if
33:30scenario.
33:31What if
33:32somebody
33:32came up
33:33to your
33:33wife
33:33dressed
33:34in a
33:34clown suit
33:35so they
33:35couldn't
33:35identify
33:36her?
33:39This
33:39lawyer
33:40told him,
33:41be a
33:42clown.
33:43You know,
33:43you'll get
33:44away with
33:44it.
33:45And it's
33:45funny,
33:46this is
33:46exactly
33:47what
33:47happened.
33:48There's
33:49no doubt
33:49in my
33:50mind
33:50that that
33:51comment
33:51in one
33:52way or
33:52another
33:53led to
33:53her
33:53death.
33:55And I
33:55really
33:56regretted it
33:57all my
33:57life.
34:06This
34:07is
34:07Detective
34:07Kelly.
34:08I'll be
34:09interviewing
34:09Jamie
34:10Twink.
34:11Miss
34:11Twink is
34:12the
34:12stepsister
34:13of the
34:13victim,
34:14in this
34:14case,
34:14Marlene
34:15Orr.
34:17You
34:17indicated
34:17that about
34:18six to
34:18eight weeks
34:19ago you
34:19received a
34:19phone call
34:20from Marlene.
34:22Can you
34:22tell me
34:23again what
34:23that phone
34:24call is
34:24about?
34:25She
34:26just kept
34:27telling me
34:27if anything
34:29happens to
34:30me,
34:31get Joey
34:31out of
34:32the house.
34:33I'll be
34:34at Marlene
34:55Warren's funeral,
34:56the sheriff's
34:57office conducted
34:57covert surveillance.
34:59generally
35:02speaking,
35:03the
35:03arsonist
35:04always
35:04returns to
35:05the fire,
35:06the criminal
35:06always returns
35:07to the scene
35:08of the crime,
35:09and they
35:10figured if
35:11they could
35:11videotape
35:12the people
35:13that were
35:14attending the
35:14funeral,
35:15it might lead
35:16to something
35:16more to
35:18solve the
35:18crime.
35:18Oh my god,
35:21there were
35:22so many
35:22people there.
35:24A lot
35:25of law
35:25enforcement,
35:26a lot
35:27of detectives,
35:28undercovers,
35:29they even
35:29had a
35:30helicopter
35:31flying over.
35:33I'm glad
35:34they were
35:34doing that.
35:35We need
35:35to get
35:36answers.
35:38The funeral
35:39was the
35:39worst part.
35:41I couldn't
35:41stop shaking
35:42for the life
35:44of me.
35:44I just
35:44couldn't
35:44stop shaking.
35:45At that
35:48point,
35:48all my
35:49dreams
35:50were gone.
35:52I said
35:53my goodbye,
35:54told her
35:55I loved
35:55her,
35:56and that's
35:57all I
35:57could handle
35:57that day.
36:00Mike was
36:01standing outside
36:01the whole
36:02time.
36:03You would
36:04think that
36:04he would
36:05be inside
36:05by Marlene,
36:07but he
36:07wasn't,
36:08he was
36:08standing
36:08outside
36:08just BS-ing
36:09with people.
36:12The police
36:13officer is
36:13investigating.
36:14They want
36:14to know
36:15why Mike's
36:15not crying.
36:16He was
36:17there,
36:17giving his
36:18respect,
36:18but it
36:19wasn't his
36:19worst day.
36:35Marlene
36:36was sitting
36:36at my
36:37house and
36:37was having
36:38a cup of
36:38coffee and
36:39smoking our
36:39cigarettes,
36:40and her
36:41phone rang,
36:42and she
36:42got this
36:43real,
36:44like,
36:44horrid look
36:45on her
36:45face,
36:46and she
36:46screamed,
36:46oh my
36:47God,
36:48my oldest
36:49son,
36:50John,
36:51he's been
36:51in a car
36:52accident.
36:55The next
36:56day,
36:56she called
36:57me and
36:58told me
36:58that Johnny
36:59didn't make
36:59it.
37:04When I
37:04lost my
37:05brother,
37:06it was very
37:07traumatizing for
37:08me and my
37:09mother.
37:09Mike
37:12didn't care.
37:14Literally
37:15didn't care.
37:17Mike
37:18wasn't very
37:18supported after
37:19Johnny died.
37:22Marlene
37:22was like a
37:23lost soul.
37:25She
37:25wasn't the
37:26happy-go-lucky
37:27person with a
37:28smile all the
37:29time.
37:32She didn't
37:33want airplanes
37:34and runways in
37:35the backyard.
37:36She wanted him
37:37to come home
37:38and be home
37:39and he had
37:40other
37:40alternatives.
37:47She was
37:48grieving.
37:48She was
37:49looking for
37:50a shoulder to
37:50cry on.
37:51She was
37:51looking for
37:52compassion and
37:53support.
37:54And Mike is
37:55busy with his
37:56businesses,
37:57so he's not
37:58there for her.
37:59You know,
38:00at the end,
38:00they fought a
38:01lot, Marlene
38:02and Mike.
38:03I'd been over
38:04and they had
38:04fights.
38:05You could hear
38:05her screaming
38:05in the bedroom,
38:07you could hear
38:07shit being
38:08thrown around.
38:09I wasn't in
38:09the bedroom to
38:11visually see it,
38:12but, you know,
38:12she comes out,
38:13she got bruises,
38:14she's bleeding.
38:15It got pretty
38:15bad at the end.
38:23This is Detective
38:24Bill Williams.
38:25The date is
38:27June 1st,
38:281990.
38:29Interview with
38:30Deborah.
38:32What can you
38:33tell me about
38:33your sister
38:34recently?
38:36I think we
38:37ought to know.
38:38About a year
38:39ago, she
38:40called me
38:41and she
38:43said that
38:44he beat her
38:45up and
38:46she threatened
38:48to leave him
38:48and he
38:50threatened her
38:51and kill
38:53her.
38:54You said
38:55he'd kill
38:55her if she
38:55left him?
38:56Yeah.
38:57For the next
39:07four to five
39:08days after the
39:09murder,
39:10we spent a lot
39:11of time trying
39:12to find out
39:12everything we
39:13could about
39:14the Warren
39:15family.
39:16And another
39:16thing we found
39:17out was that
39:18as we started
39:19doing criminal
39:20background checks,
39:21we saw that
39:22Michael Warren
39:23had been
39:23convicted in 1983
39:24for rolling
39:26back odometers
39:27of cars to
39:29show that they
39:29had less
39:30mileage to
39:30make them
39:31more valuable.
39:33What that
39:34meant was he
39:35was not allowed
39:36to continue
39:37to own the
39:37business under
39:38the laws of
39:39the state of
39:39Florida, so he
39:40had to turn the
39:41businesses over
39:42to his wife.
39:43All of the
39:44assets that
39:45Marlene and
39:46Michael owned
39:47as far as
39:47business was
39:48all under
39:49Marlene's name.
39:52Typically in a
39:53homicide, you
39:55always want to
39:55look at the
39:55motive.
39:58Did Marlene
39:59have enemies?
40:01Did somebody
40:01want her killed?
40:03Was her
40:03husband involved?
40:05So the
40:06sheriff's office
40:07detectives
40:08interviewed lots
40:09and lots of
40:10people in order
40:11to develop
40:12leads in
40:13attempting to
40:13solve the
40:14crime.
40:16You know,
40:16there were
40:16reports,
40:17Michael Warren
40:18had stated
40:19to several
40:20people that
40:21it's cheaper
40:21to have his
40:22wife killed
40:23than to
40:24divorce her
40:24because they
40:25were quite
40:25wealthy.
40:32So Detective
40:32Kelly, the
40:33date today
40:34is 621 of
40:3590, presently
40:36in every
40:36room in the
40:37sheriff's office
40:37headquarters
40:38with John
40:39Douglas Moran.
40:40When did
40:41you first
40:41meet Michael
40:41Warren?
40:42I first
40:43met Michael
40:43and I
40:43went to
40:44a 500
40:44job.
40:45At
40:45Barney
40:45Motors?
40:46At
40:46Barney
40:46Motors.
40:47How long
40:47did you
40:47work for
40:47him?
40:48About a
40:48year and
40:48a half.
40:51You say
40:51you were
40:51pretty close?
40:52I would
40:52say yes,
40:53real close.
40:56And what
40:57kind of
40:57conversation
40:57did he
40:58make with
40:58you as
40:58far as
40:59his wife
40:59was
40:59concerned?
41:00He wished
41:00he'd
41:01get rid
41:01of the
41:01bitch,
41:01wished
41:02he'd
41:02never
41:02married
41:02the
41:03lady,
41:03sick and
41:05fed up
41:06with her
41:06shit.
41:07Did he
41:08ever make
41:08any direct
41:10statements
41:10that he
41:10wanted to
41:11get rid
41:11of?
41:12Oh,
41:12sure.
41:13But I
41:14asked Mike
41:14one time,
41:15you know,
41:15why don't
41:15you just
41:16divorce
41:16the lady,
41:17you know,
41:17if you're
41:17that
41:17miserable?
41:19What did
41:20he say
41:20as far
41:21as the
41:22divorce
41:22thing about
41:23him?
41:23He
41:23couldn't
41:23divorce
41:24her
41:24because
41:24he
41:24couldn't
41:24afford
41:25to
41:25give
41:25her
41:25half
41:25of
41:25what
41:25he
41:26had.
41:28So
41:29it
41:29was
41:29a
41:29money
41:29thing?
41:30It
41:30was
41:30a
41:30money
41:30thing,
41:30strictly
41:31money.
41:31Everything
41:32for
41:32Mike
41:32is
41:33money.
41:33Everything.
41:43Michael
41:44Warren
41:44had an
41:44airtight
41:45alibi
41:45for being
41:46physically
41:46present,
41:47but he
41:48still was
41:49included as
41:50a suspect
41:50because of
41:51the financial
41:52reward that
41:53he would get
41:53by Marlene
41:54being murdered
41:55as opposed
41:55to a
41:56divorce,
41:56which would
41:56be very
41:57costly.
41:58So
41:58clearly he
41:59was still
42:00in the
42:00mix.
42:01They
42:01just
42:02knew
42:02that
42:02they
42:02couldn't
42:03place
42:03him
42:04there
42:04physically.
42:07All
42:08he
42:08had
42:08to
42:08do
42:08was
42:08say,
42:09give
42:09me
42:09a
42:09divorce.
42:10She
42:10would
42:10have
42:10given
42:11it
42:11to
42:11him.
42:11But
42:12she
42:13was
42:13worth
42:13a
42:13lot
42:13more
42:14to
42:14him
42:14dead
42:14than
42:15alive.
42:21Two
42:21weeks
42:21before
42:22the
42:22murder,
42:23my
42:23mom sat
42:24me
42:24down
42:24and
42:24said,
42:24hey,
42:25you
42:25know,
42:26I
42:26got to
42:26talk
42:27to
42:27you.
42:28And
42:28she
42:28was
42:28telling
42:29me
42:29pretty
42:29much
42:30that
42:30she
42:30was
42:30going
42:30to
42:30leave
42:31Mike.
42:31At
42:32that
42:32point,
42:33when
42:33she
42:34knew
42:34she
42:34was
42:35going
42:35to
42:35leave
42:35him,
42:36she
42:36started
42:36organizing.
42:37She
42:37started
42:38planning.
42:38I
42:38said,
42:38let's
42:38go.
42:39Let's
42:39go now.
42:40She
42:41said,
42:41I
42:41have
42:42things
42:42I
42:42have
42:42to
42:42do
42:43first.
42:46She
42:46come
42:47up and
42:47asked
42:47me,
42:48if
42:48I
42:48was
42:48to
42:49leave
42:49Mike,
42:49will
42:49you
42:50take
42:50me
42:50to
42:50the
42:50airport,
42:51Joey
42:52and
42:52I?
42:52And
42:53I
42:53said,
42:53sure,
42:53no
42:53problem.
42:56But
42:56I
43:00was
43:00supposed
43:01to
43:01leave.
43:01That's
43:01when
43:01she
43:02was
43:02murdered.
43:05And
43:05I
43:08never
43:09got to
43:09see her
43:09again.
43:22The
43:22clown
43:23had
43:23given
43:23Marlene
43:24Warren
43:24a
43:25basket
43:25with
43:26flowers
43:26and
43:27some
43:27balloons.
43:28That
43:28was the
43:29only
43:29evidence
43:30left
43:30by
43:31the
43:31shooter.
43:32Typically
43:33now
43:33we'd
43:34look at
43:34the
43:34balloons
43:35and
43:35get
43:35a
43:35little
43:35SKU
43:36number
43:36and
43:37you
43:37could
43:37trace
43:37down
43:38where
43:38that
43:38balloon
43:38was
43:38sold.
43:40But
43:40back
43:40then
43:41you
43:41had
43:41the
43:42phone
43:42book.
43:43So
43:43they
43:43went
43:44and
43:44called
43:44all
43:44the
43:44florists,
43:45all
43:45the
43:45people
43:45that
43:46sold
43:46flowers
43:46in
43:47the
43:48area
43:48to
43:49find
43:49the
43:50articles
43:50that
43:51were
43:51involved
43:51in
43:51the
43:51crime.
43:53The
43:54only
43:54one
43:54that
43:54they
43:54could
43:54find
43:55nearby
43:55was
43:56a
44:00Warren's
44:00home
44:00and
44:01downtown
44:02West Palm
44:02Beach
44:02and
44:03they
44:04went
44:04to
44:04confirm
44:04for
44:05themselves
44:05if
44:06that
44:06Publix
44:07had
44:07sold
44:07such
44:08an
44:08arrangement.
44:12A clerk
44:13at the
44:13Publix
44:14described
44:14selling
44:15the
44:15flowers
44:16and
44:16the
44:16balloons
44:17to
44:17a
44:17woman
44:18with
44:18long
44:19dark
44:19hair.
44:23She
44:24paid
44:24cash.
44:25They
44:25actually
44:25were
44:26able
44:26to
44:26provide
44:27the
44:27receipt
44:27for
44:28the
44:28arrangement.
44:30Cashier
44:31in the
44:31grocery
44:32store
44:32gave
44:32a
44:32decent
44:33description
44:33of
44:34the
44:34female.
44:36The
44:36sheriff's
44:36office
44:37was
44:37working
44:38on
44:38very
44:38few
44:39leads.
44:40The
44:40Publix
44:40grocery
44:41store
44:41information
44:42was
44:42huge
44:43because
44:43it
44:43opened
44:43up
44:44another
44:44avenue
44:44for
44:45them
44:45to
44:45investigate
44:46whoever
44:46this
44:47woman
44:47was.
44:56In
44:57the
44:57early
44:57phases
44:58of
44:58the
44:58investigation,
44:59even
45:00though
45:00Mike
45:00had
45:01an
45:01alibi
45:01and
45:02was
45:02not
45:02there
45:03when
45:03the
45:03crime
45:03was
45:04committed,
45:05there
45:06were
45:06these
45:06rumors
45:07about
45:07him
45:08having
45:08an
45:08affair.
45:13On
45:14the
45:14day
45:14of
45:14the
45:14homicide,
45:15within

45:21Right
45:21away,
45:22they were
45:23given the

45:24that this

45:25we need

45:26sure

45:35Yes,
45:36it is.
45:36There's no

45:40No.
45:41What's the

45:43Marlee Warren
45:44was just shot
45:45earlier today.
45:48I'm afraid to say
45:49this, I'm afraid
45:50they'll use it
45:50and they'll know
45:51it was me.
45:52Um, I think
45:55you just need
45:56to ask Sheila
45:59Jean and
46:00Mike Warren
46:00a few
46:01questions.
46:01We'll see you
