00:00Now today, I have an episode inspired by the cancellation of Franklin and Bash.
00:24Those poor lawyers never had a chance, man.
00:26So, because I'm a huge Mark Paul Gosler fan, I checked out IMDb and I found out there was a show called Hyperion Bay.
00:34You ever heard of it?
00:36Me neither, because I would have been like 13 at the time and I wasn't watching WB dramas, even if they had Zack Morris in them.
00:43I decided to go on the darker sides of the internet and secure myself the 17 episodes of Hyperion Bay.
00:51Hyperion Bay is the story of Dennis Sweeney.
00:53Dennis Sweeney is played by Mark Paul Gosler.
00:55Now, I know what you're thinking.
00:57Zack Morris.
00:58And now in this show, Zack Morris is a tech genius who created amazing computer programs.
01:05Yeah, he learned it from his dad, Derek.
01:07Oh wait, it's not Saved by the Bell.
01:09Dennis Sweeney has a company called Muse.
01:12Muse is located in San Francisco, but now they're opening a location in this town, which is a very industrial town.
01:19It's accessible to San Francisco and Los Angeles without being part of the urban sprawl.
01:23Flexible zoning, adaptable facilities, and lucky for you, I knew about it because it's my hometown.
01:28As he goes back to town, Dennis also realizes that his brother Nick and Amy have a big secret.
01:33We're going to have to tell them.
01:35Uh, Nick and I went to see a lawyer.
01:38We're going to separate.
01:40On top of that, we also meet the other big star of this, Trudy.
01:45Trudy was an ex-cheerleader who Dennis had the hots for growing up, but they were from two different worlds.
01:51Did you go out with her in high school?
01:53No, I did not go out with Trudy Carson.
01:55But you wanted to.
01:57Yeah, you want a lot of things when you're a kid.
01:59Dennis at the time is going with Jennifer, and I'm team Jen.
02:03In episode one, we also meet town supervisor Bart Korver.
02:06And this guy is a dink.
02:08I hate him.
02:09And we find out early on that he's shady.
02:11Now, the tech talk is awesome.
02:13I mean, let's go right to the part where they discuss viruses.
02:17That's what I love about computers.
02:18Whatever you tell them, they think it's the truth.
02:20Remember how you said it takes 18 bytes of code to completely blank somebody's hard drive?
02:24Yeah.
02:24Peru figured a way to do it in 12.
02:27In what?
02:28It's a slower virus.
02:30It sort of eats through the data.
02:31Like the Blood and the Alien movies?
02:33The first two good ones.
02:35Of course.
02:35We're a little unclear on the concept here.
02:37We're supposed to protect people's data, not bulk erase it.
02:39Don't dismiss this idea.
02:40It's killer code.
02:41And destruction is always more interesting than creation.
02:44And what about this?
02:45This blew my mind.
02:46Is he Skyping with his boss in 1999?
02:50Could we do that?
02:51I mean, I know what I was doing in 1999.
02:53And they kind of mention it.
02:56Soon Americans will be able to safely and anonymously download all the fake celebrity nudes they can find.
03:02Fake celebrity nudes in 1999?
03:06Uh, yeah.
03:08It's really a matchup between Jennifer and Trudy.
03:12I think this dialogue needed this.
03:14I know I don't want you coming in here with any more cookies for him.
03:19And that goes for pies, cakes, crullers, and anything else you can cook up in ice.
03:23You understand?
03:25You understand?
03:27Okay.
03:31Next time it won't be cookies.
03:35I know.
03:36It's not saved by the bell.
03:38I just want it to be, okay?
03:40Listen to Dennis describe what Trudy needs in a computer.
03:43Well, to start off with, you don't need more than 32 megabytes of RAM, a 2 gigabyte hard drive, and a 166 megahertz processor.
03:50I think this video, when I export it, is going to be bigger than that hard drive.
03:54Oh, and I also kind of like this gay joke that Nelson makes about Dennis.
03:58Hey, you know, did she stay with them? You know what I mean?
04:02Yeah, they sleep together, Nelson. What, you want to watch or something?
04:06I don't think it's the wrong way, but I sort of assumed he was gay.
04:10What are you talking about?
04:12I just figured, you know, he's always playing on the computer and moved to San Francisco.
04:16So now here's where I start to dislike Trudy.
04:19She is really trying to interfere in their relationship.
04:22I'm sending you something special.
04:23See, like right now, she's about to sext her.
04:24For your eyes only.
04:26Oh, man.
04:27I wasn't sexting.
04:28She just sent a picture of herself as a cheerleader in the yearbook.
04:32Damn it.
04:33Was there sexting in 1999?
04:35I got to imagine there was.
04:37And Amy reveals, yeah, she's the one who cheated on Nick.
04:40Sleeping with someone who is not your husband seems to me we need another word for that.
04:45I can't think of a word for how it feels.
04:47So I don't say anything.
04:48I keep my mouth shut.
04:52And people think that I'm the problem.
04:54And on top of that, Nick wants to buy this piece of land that his dad says,
04:57no, don't, don't do it.
05:00But Nick goes ahead.
05:01The bank approves of it.
05:02And he's super happy.
05:04Until it gets taken away from him.
05:07The driving.
05:08In episode four, they do change the theme song to All Wait by Hootie and the Blowfish.
05:12I'll be here for you in the morning when times have changed.
05:24I'll be there through the lies and all.
05:29I'll be standing like a soldier for you.
05:32You hold your secrets.
05:35Through the days that I need to be alone.
05:39I'll wait.
05:40I will wait for you through the rise and fall.
05:44Smell this.
05:58Oh, not a chance.
06:00I'm out of shirts.
06:01Well, take one of mine.
06:02Maybe something with some daring decolletage.
06:04Well, sends a wrong message to the staff.
06:07Well, you could be the Ed Wood of software.
06:08Jennifer goes back to San Francisco.
06:10And she meets up with this, I don't know, he's a douchey kind of guy.
06:14And I guess they dated.
06:16And he decides to test Jennifer by saying that both of them are people who run from relationships
06:21when the going gets tough.
06:22So he decides they should kiss to prove that, you know, they're not meant for each other.
06:28And that's kind of a stupid strategy.
06:30I mean, I don't put pizza in front of me while I'm dieting and say, if I don't eat this pizza,
06:37this diet's right for me.
06:38Nick Sweeney decides to join up with this other building company who the dads had a problem
06:43with because this other guy is really shady and he doesn't want his son being involved
06:48in it.
06:49But his son's like, dude, I'm my own man.
06:52Dennis and Trudy are planning for an alumni dance.
06:55And well, Dennis is kind of uncomfortable with this whole thing because he never went
06:59to the dances.
06:59He's a tech guy.
07:02Zach Morris didn't go to the dances.
07:05Man, they couldn't even see the part where Screech decides to, no, it's not Sable the Bell.
07:10It gets really 90s as they both slow dance alone to All B by Edmund McCain.
07:16Nobody put on music in this scene.
07:32So I think they're just slow dancing to crickets.
07:36Well, I thought I would bring a few things down to make life a little more tolerable for
07:50me here, assuming you still want me.
07:53Now we also meet this guy, Brian, who was, I guess, responsible for Nick meeting Amy back
08:08in the day, and Brian decides he wants Amy now that she's available.
08:13Since Amy's now available, I think Nick decides to move on and goes out with this girl, Claire.
08:19I'm Claire.
08:20You met the other day at the cannery, remember?
08:23Oh yeah, yeah, I remember.
08:24I'm working on a special project, voice recognition software.
08:28The idea is you interact with your computer by talking to it.
08:32Also, I'm pretty sure this girl, Claire, she invented Siri.
08:35Jennifer and Dennis decide to move into a house together.
08:39You've reached Dennis Sweeney and Jennifer Worth.
08:42Of the law firm of Sweeney and Worth?
08:44You're not helping.
08:44They're both planning to go to that alumni dance.
08:47Dennis and Jennifer get into a fight, and Dennis ends up going to the thing.
08:51Jennifer decides to stay home.
08:52Brian and Nick get into an argument about Amy.
08:55Now what I really like is as this is going on, Nelson keeps calling Dennis gay.
08:59Turn.
09:01Nelson, you want us to do something about that computer hotshot who's monopolizing your wife?
09:05Dennis Sweeney.
09:06Forget it, he's harmless.
09:09Besides that, he's gay.
09:11That explains why do women like him.
09:14Which is kind of a problem because Dennis and Trudy make out in this episode.
09:20Did you dance?
09:21I spent time on the dance floor.
09:23With?
09:25Amy, Trudy, the girl's basketball coach.
09:28If Nelson thinks Dennis is gay, he really doesn't believe his own line because he confronts Trudy about the whole thing, thinking that they slept together, when so far at this point all they've done is make out.
09:42And, well, Trudy moves out.
09:44Trudy and Nelson, they're done done.
09:47And Trudy, well, she actually gets a promotion at Muse.
09:51She's going to be running the food area because, well, Marcus figures out a way to get the mean boss lady out of their hair.
09:59She's gone.
09:59She thinks she has another job somewhere else.
10:01Because Trudy's trifling and I don't like her.
10:04She goes up to Marcus and gives him a kiss to make Dennis jealous.
10:08This would be a great opportunity for you to become a man-man.
10:11There are four kinds of men.
10:13There's boy-boy, like Leonardo DiCaprio.
10:16Boy-man, like Tom Cruise somewhere between Risky Business and Top Gun.
10:20A man-boy, like James Stewart and Mr. Smith.
10:22And a man-man, like Harrison Ford and, well, anything.
10:27Dad, Dennis wanted that Commodore computer thing that year.
10:31I don't want to give him something that would keep him alone in his room all day.
10:35Episode 10 is where the series gets crazy.
10:37And I guess this is right around the time they have the 90210 person in charge of the show.
10:43We're introduced to Carmen Electra, who plays Sarah Hicks.
10:46Some good news.
10:48The cavalry's arrived.
10:49Dennis Sweeney, my daughter, Sarah Hicks.
10:52Oh, and the theme song changes now.
10:56It's pretty amazing.
11:01Round and round we go
11:04Sometimes it feels fun
11:06We're on a rollercoaster ride
11:08Baby, don't you know
11:12It could eat you up
11:14If you try to keep it all inside
11:18Seems like hard times come easy
11:22We do a lot of hanging on these days
11:26But the heart finds a reason
11:30And love seems to file away
11:34Even if it hurts you believe it
11:37Hard times
11:41Talking about hard times
11:43Hard times
11:45Talking about hard times
11:49And now Brian and Amy are going to take a break
11:52Because, well
11:53Amy's just not feeling Brian anymore
11:56And speaking of breaks
11:58Trudy has now filed for a divorce from Nelson
12:01Now when they're at the bar
12:02Trudy and Jennifer start arguing with each other
12:04And then Nelson confronts Dennis
12:07Like, oh, hey, dude
12:08Dennis, you're ruining this town
12:09And Dennis
12:10He's sick of Nelson at this point
12:12So he's
12:12Pow
12:13Knocks him out
12:14God
12:15He hasn't landed a punch that hard
12:16Since he knocked out Slater
12:18Hodgman, the boss
12:19Wants to get more control back
12:21Of his company
12:21And he wants to put a construction job
12:24Over to that shady guy
12:25From earlier
12:25The one that Nick's now working for
12:27Well
12:28Dennis is having none of that
12:30He gave the construction job
12:32To his dad
12:33Sarah called me
12:35As soon as the contracts came in
12:36Wrong company
12:37Wrong signature
12:38Everything notarized
12:39Everything co-signed
12:40Can't do anything about it now
12:43So what was this?
12:46You being clever
12:47Or did you just spit my daughter's face
12:50To see what I would do?
12:51This kind of annoys Hodgman
12:53Who had gone down months earlier
12:55And formed relationships
12:56With the town's folks
12:58And set briberies already in place
13:01Then we find out that Brian is crazy
13:03And he's now stalking Amy
13:05And, whoa
13:07Trudy just got naked
13:09Yeah
13:10I don't like Trudy
13:11But, you know, she's hot, so
13:12Oh, damn
13:13Now they set the canary on fire
13:15And who comes out of that building?
13:18Nelson
13:19I knew he hated the canary
13:20I didn't think he'd burn it down, though
13:22Nelson is suspected for arson
13:24And Prime Cop
13:26Which is a technologist
13:27That they'd been working on
13:28Has now been leaked
13:29The dad is pretty sure
13:31That wordsman did it
13:32He's never been caught
13:33He's too slippery
13:34Besides, it's not like
13:35He's robbing banks
13:36Hell, the man used to carry on
13:37About arson being the perfect crime
13:39Because the evidence goes up in smoke
13:41Dennis' boss wants to humiliate him
13:43Because, you know
13:45You gotta oust Dennis
13:46My daughter tells me
13:48That the police think
13:49The arsonist was motivated
13:50By revenge against you
13:52Because you had a relationship
13:55With a low-level employee
13:56Around here
13:57And that low-level employee
13:59Just happens to be married
14:00To the man who lit the match
14:01If your pathetic sex life
14:03Caused this
14:04You'll be facing
14:05A level of public exposure
14:06That will embarrass
14:07Even your most distant relatives
14:10And while all this is going on
14:12Brian is losing his mind
14:14Well, it does get Amy and Nick
14:17Back together
14:17This guy's nuts
14:19No wonder he gets knocked out here
14:21I'd knock him out too
14:23Brian is
14:24Well, he's completely lost it
14:26And he tries to break into their house
14:27And, well
14:28I'm pretty sure he just got
14:30Whooped by girl power
14:32Jesus, what is it?
14:34Talk about boys
14:35Eat pizza
14:36Take out a psychopath
14:38You know, at the end of the episode
14:40Jennifer and Dennis
14:41Have this argument
14:42And she thinks, you know
14:43He's into Trudy
14:44And he just snaps
14:46Dennis is like
14:47I'm not interested in you, okay?
14:48Trudy, not into you
14:49Get lost
14:50Get the bricks
14:51I never thought you were
14:52Well
14:52You know, giving that
14:54Connor development to my dad
14:55Instead of you
14:55What a pissant thing to do that was
14:57Yeah, especially since
14:58I'm the one that tipped
14:59Borden Hicks to that drive-in property
15:01Another good thing is
15:03Somebody always profits
15:04From the cleanup
15:05You started the fire?
15:15Frank, I wanted to let bygones be bygones
15:17Bygones?
15:19The heck did I ever do to you
15:20Besides refuse to go along with the schemes
15:22You lost me two million dollars
15:23You smug, self-satisfied son of a bitch
15:26I told you he'd come
15:33Wordgeman is off the jail
15:36And guess what?
15:36So is Brian
15:37Just like that
15:39They're gone
15:39They're out of the story
15:40Muse is now losing 32%
15:42Because of their software being leaked
15:45It was a voice recognition thing
15:47And it went to this company
15:48Leaco?
15:49So Sarah's planning for a hostile takeover
15:52To get her dad out of the company
15:54Because, well, she hates her dad
15:56If all I wanted to do was get rid of you
15:58I'd have had you packing up your floppies
16:00The moment I walked in
16:01Okay, if I'm not your target
16:03Then why are you systematically taking blows
16:05At this company?
16:06I'm not saying that I am
16:07However, if one were to leak inside information
16:10Who do you think would be the obvious objective?
16:12Espionage for personal profit
16:14Come on
16:16Even with the deflated stock
16:17You know what I'm worth
16:18Try again
16:19Why do you devalue your own company?
16:22It's not my company
16:24It's my father's
16:25A hostile takeover
16:27Why?
16:28Because it should be my company
16:30Her dad was a terrible person to her mother
16:32And Sarah is out for revenge
16:33Now that Wordgeman's in jail
16:35Nick's jobless again
16:36But he might be back together with Amy
16:38Maybe
16:39And now this is where I lose
16:41Sympathy for Jen
16:43Dude, look at her
16:44She is dish throwing insane at Dennis
16:46And she stepped on one
16:48She stepped on one
16:49What a clumsy gal
16:50Now Jennifer has decided to pack and leave
16:53She's going
16:54Sarah decides to overthrow her dad in the company
16:58Now she wants my company
16:58She fires Dennis' dad
17:00While trying to get Dennis on her side
17:02That's not going to work out too well
17:04Well, I guess there is going to be a union
17:06Because, well
17:07Trudy wins
17:09Her and Dennis get together on a boat
17:11Jen's out of the picture
17:13Man
17:14I guess you don't take Trudy lightly, apparently
17:18Marcus starts having a thing for Trudy
17:21Dennis doesn't know how to go about that
17:24Because now he's kind of with Trudy
17:26And now Sarah is kind of into the net
17:29I am sick
17:32To death
17:33Of the two of you
17:35You don't give a damn about passion for the work
17:38The code
17:40You're both too busy playing your cat and mouse games
17:43It's just business, son
17:45No
17:45No, it's not
17:47I love my work
17:49He doesn't really want to choose between Sarah and the dad
17:51But he chooses Sarah
17:52We put in the hours with me
17:53Amusing me
17:54And I won't let you destroy that
17:55Dennis and Marcus decide to call a truce over the Trudy thing
17:59That, you know, Dennis is with her
18:00And he should have been more forthcoming
18:02The old boss comes near the boat
18:04And says, Dennis
18:05You made a deal with the devil
18:07Welcome to hell
18:09No, he actually says
18:11Welcome to hell
18:11You've made a pact with the devil
18:13Welcome to hell
18:21And Nick is now taking a job to work for Sarah
18:26And we find out that Sarah is being extorted
18:29By the guy, Korver, from earlier
18:33The town supervisor
18:34Apparently my father had some kind of payoff deal with him
18:38He threw Korver consultant money
18:40And Korver let my father build
18:42I mean, this goes back as far as the cannery
18:45I guess there's a couple smaller people involved as well
18:48Well, Korver's having none of it
18:51And he's also gonna play hardball
18:53And, well, this gets big
18:56Because Nelson goes to the job site
18:59And, you know, he's just walking around
19:02He's checking out some of the stuff that's happening on the site
19:05Oh, man
19:05Walks out to an edge
19:06And Korver is responsible
19:08To get the power shut off of the building
19:10Well, now Nelson can't see
19:12And he falls to death
19:15Well, Dennis
19:17He's not cool with that
19:19He, at the funeral
19:21Confronts the town supervisor
19:23And he's like
19:24Listen
19:24You're responsible for murder
19:26Well, I just had a little talk
19:28With our incredibly corrupt town supervisor
19:30Bart Korver
19:31Who thought I already knew what you were up to
19:32Which, of course, you hid from me
19:33Since you're also incredibly corrupt
19:35Guess what, Sarah?
19:37I'm going to San Francisco
19:38To report to the board
19:38You're shifting up funds
19:39Covering up with the aid of an employee
19:41And bribing a city official
19:42Congrats
19:43You're losing the company
19:45And joining the other embezzlers in Lompoc
19:47And that pressures pretty much everyone
19:49His old boss
19:51Sarah
19:51The board
19:52Nick
19:53The town supervisor
19:55They're all in it
19:56You know, Nick goes to the bar
19:57And he just snaps about the whole situation
19:59But hey
20:00It does get him in bed with
20:02Carmen Electra
20:03So, you know
20:04That's a good thing
20:06Oh my god, Nick
20:08We're being sued
20:09What?
20:11Why?
20:11What for?
20:12Seven million dollars
20:14By Trudy Tucker
20:15For the wrongful death of Nelson Tucker
20:18Trudy is now getting legal counseling
20:22From the town supervisor
20:24And the town supervisor
20:25Is being bribed by Dennis' old boss
20:28And everyone's putting pressure on each other
20:30To settle
20:30Or keep somebody on the payroll
20:32Or just back off
20:34You can resign
20:35Retire
20:37Take a permanent vacation
20:38Out of the country
20:39And live off those fees you've earned
20:41No one will press charges
20:43And all this crap will go away
20:44You shouldn't have made that offer, Dennis
20:50Because you almost had me convinced
20:53You really were willing to go to jail
20:55But this
20:55Resign and retire hogwash
20:57Is just a bluff
20:59You're looking for a way out
21:01And you're no more willing to go to jail
21:04Any more than I am
21:06Don't call my bluff
21:08Don't
21:12I'm going to bring the pressure
21:13I'm Zach Morris
21:15You don't tell me what to do
21:17And he says
21:19You know what?
21:19If I try to expose the town supervisor
21:22He'll cave
21:23Well they go to court
21:25And he does exactly that
21:26And the town supervisor caves
21:28And the lawsuits are dismissed
21:32And the town supervisor is not going to represent Trudy anymore
21:36And he retired
21:37That also causes Nick and Sarah to continue their relationship
21:42And not worry about having to go to jail
21:43So they do it on a truck bed
21:45Well in episode 16
21:46They continue doing it
21:48And Dennis walks in on them
21:50So to help out his brother
21:53They hire a private investigator
21:55And Dennis is about to go tell
21:57Everything he knows about Trudy to this PI
22:00When he goes to the bar
22:01He sees Amy
22:02And he's like
22:03You know what?
22:04This is too scummy
22:05I don't like it
22:06I'm just going to talk to Amy
22:07At the end of the episode
22:08We see that Trudy is getting advice
22:11And bribed from Dennis' old boss
22:14This guy
22:15This guy's freaking scum
22:16Okay
22:18The cannery is barely operational anymore
22:20Now I am doing my best to cover
22:21But this is supposed to be your baby
22:23And now you are so busy with Sarah
22:25And lawyers
22:26And deals
22:26I don't even see you around here anymore
22:28I know
22:28I know
22:29We got to get back to business
22:30The cash flow will dry up
22:31Screw the cash flow
22:32Dennis
22:32Who cares?
22:34Man this is about code
22:35Right?
22:36About making programs
22:37And applications that blow our minds
22:39And Dennis is like
22:40You know what?
22:40Yeah you're right
22:41Sarah and Dennis
22:42Get pulled out of the office
22:43Because they're not allowed to be there anymore
22:46The old boss is like
22:47Kick them both out
22:49Get them out of this building
22:50Dennis decides
22:51You know what?
22:52I'm going to go see Trudy
22:53And I'm going to say exactly what happened
22:54I'm just going to throw all the cards out on the table
22:56And hope that Trudy is rational
22:58Which
22:59You know
22:59I haven't seen so far
23:01You know I didn't
23:03Nelson died because he was in the wrong place
23:06At the wrong time
23:07While my company was up to its neck
23:08In a bribery and cover up scheme
23:10That if it goes public
23:11I'll never be able to work in the business again
23:13Anyway Trudy's like
23:15Whoa
23:16I'm being used
23:17He is going to close down the company
23:20Just like you said
23:21But in the end
23:23I thought about Nelson
23:23And the kind of person
23:25That he always thought I was
23:27Wouldn't be doing these things
23:28He may lose his temper sometimes
23:31But he was honorable
23:32And he had a forgiving heart
23:34And I don't want to do anything
23:36To tarnish that
23:37Are you thinking of dropping a suit?
23:41More than that Dennis
23:42I have some information for you
23:48I don't know
23:49Sound like fun?
23:50Yeah actually it does
23:52Hello
23:55What's that?
23:58That is more trouble on the way
24:00So basically Hyperion Bay
24:02Ends with Dennis revealing
24:03He loves Amy
24:04And Amy kind of
24:06Loves him back
24:07But they decided not to go forward with it
24:09Because
24:10That would have been weird
24:12But I assume in future episodes
24:13They probably would have gone further
24:14Nick and Sarah are back together
24:16And hey
24:17Wet Carmen Electra
24:20Alright
24:21Anyway that's Hyperion Bay
24:23This is Joe's Nostalgia Overload
24:24If you'd like to see me talk about
24:26Another obscure show
24:27Subscribe
24:28Maybe
24:29I mean I talked about Hyperion Bay for you
24:32You owe me
24:33Eh you don't owe me
24:35I actually enjoyed Hyperion Bay
24:36It was like
24:37One Tree Hill
24:38With Zach Morris
