00:00:00Everybody loves the 90s, and this guy just took off in popularity.
00:00:06His name was Sonic the Hedgehog, and he is white-hot in popularity all over again.
00:00:12Doesn't that bring you back?
00:00:13Dude, it does. So many memories playing Sonic, one specifically,
00:00:18getting to a certain level in, like, Sonic 2,
00:00:20and then Mom says,
00:00:22we gotta leave, we have this thing that we have to get to,
00:00:25and she wouldn't let me just pause the game, she turned it off,
00:00:27and said if you got here once, you'll get here again.
00:00:29So those were the pains of gaming in the 90s, and Sonic was a big part of that.
00:00:33And now, kids get to experience the exact same thing, because Sonic is back.
00:00:39I would say even right now, he's probably bigger than Mario,
00:00:42at least in the multimedia world, but it wasn't always smooth sailing.
00:00:46And on Pop Culture Paradise, we're going to do the embarrassing,
00:00:50you know, like a high school yearbook.
00:00:52You're going back, and you're seeing the early days of Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:00:55I hope some of these things we find, some of these photos in these yearbooks,
00:00:58aren't as bad as mine were.
00:01:00So, uh, let's get after it, man, I'm pumped.
00:01:02In a world where the IT thing is always changing,
00:01:04sometimes you need a tour guide or two to help you find your way to Pop Culture's Paradise.
00:01:10If you find yourself reminiscing or in need of a good recommendation,
00:01:13these two have you covered.
00:01:15And now, here's your hosts, Joey and Jeff!
00:01:23So we're not just all nostalgia on this show.
00:01:26We could be timely.
00:01:27If timely means that we're talking about something from the past that's still current.
00:01:31Yep, yep.
00:01:33And Sonic the Hedgehog is back with another movie.
00:01:37And you know, I liked the first one. How about you?
00:01:40Dude, I gotta say, I did. I definitely enjoyed it.
00:01:42I liked the actor that co-starred with Sonic.
00:01:46I thought it was cute. I thought it was fun. It was family-friendly.
00:01:50But it could also kind of, you know, it could kind of also play for, you know,
00:01:54dudes that are our age now that remember playing Sonic growing up in the 90s.
00:01:58I thought they did a great job,
00:02:00but I'm looking forward to seeing Tails and Knuckles in Part 2.
00:02:04And the thing is, too, first of all, at least at this age,
00:02:08I finally can distinguish between James Marsden,
00:02:11who's the guy in Sonic the Hedgehog and was also Cyclops in the X-Men movies,
00:02:17and Jason Marsden, who's the voice of Max Goof and in Step by Step and all this other stuff.
00:02:24And was part of another video on my channel.
00:02:27But, you know, what I like is this new movie. Have you seen the movie poster?
00:02:32It's a replica of the Sonic 2 artwork.
00:02:36Oh, it totally is, dude. They killed it.
00:02:39I thought the poster looked great and you see it and it immediately makes you feel like,
00:02:44wait, I've been here before. I know this. I recognize this.
00:02:48I feel safe with this. I'm willing to spend money on this.
00:02:50Or at least that's as deep as my brain goes sometimes.
00:02:53And the great thing is, is that, you know, a kid today is so into Sonic, like my nephew,
00:02:59and it's like, well, I was into Sonic. I love that blue hedgehog.
00:03:05Now, it wasn't always smooth sailing for Sega.
00:03:08Before Sonic the Hedgehog, they tried to push the Genesis with a different game.
00:03:13Do you know what that game was?
00:03:14Ah, dude, you know what? I don't. I think I remember hearing about it before,
00:03:17but I don't know what character it was. What was it?
00:03:20As much as I love it, I don't think you're going to make a movie franchise out of Altered Beast.
00:03:27Altered Beast was a dope game, but you're right, that could never be like a film.
00:03:32So the first look is what it was like before Sonic the Hedgehog existed.
00:03:38Jeff, this is a Nickelodeon show called Total Panic, which I honestly don't know anything about.
00:03:44Seemed pretty dry to the point where they're interviewing a guy and a girl about the new hot video game systems.
00:03:53Let's see them check out the Sega Genesis.
00:03:56Go on with this. Hey, why don't we check out this one?
00:03:58It's been singing at me since you walked out here. What is the noise?
00:04:02Dude, look at it. I love the box.
00:04:05Sega is a familiar name. They already have their Sega Master System out.
00:04:08You see there's Altered Beast right there.
00:04:10Dude, right on the cover of the console.
00:04:12That's sick.
00:04:15See, this doesn't feel like a Nickelodeon show. It feels more like an advertisement.
00:04:19Yeah, I was going to say this is like a QVC special kind of thing.
00:04:23You got to order this for your grandkids this Christmas.
00:04:27Even the hosts look like they're 10, 15 years too old to be hosting this kind of program.
00:04:33Oh, dude, totally. And this guy over here on the left looks like the blonde dude from 90210 who's just gotten into gaming.
00:04:41Dude, Altered Beast was a fun game though. It was freaking tough.
00:04:45The remote slider and there's better graphics.
00:04:49Do you recommend this? I mean, do you think this would be something you want to play for the holiday season?
00:04:54I mean, I still like my Nintendo better.
00:04:57Damn it, kid. Cut, cut.
00:05:00That's what happens when we bring the street urchins out from the crowd.
00:05:03You see how tight she was holding them?
00:05:05Like, if you don't say that Sega Genesis is the best thing ever,
00:05:10you'll be sleeping with the fishes. See, you got some mobsters off camera.
00:05:14But dude, I didn't know that the Sega launched with Altered Beast.
00:05:20Like for me, I just always remember Sonic being a part of Sega.
00:05:24Like I always thought he was there from the like the very beginning.
00:05:27No, they were trying to break over into this market and they thought the arcade game Altered Beast.
00:05:34That's what the kids want to play. And you know, I got a Funko Pop of the Altered Beast.
00:05:40But going with Sonic in your packing game makes a lot of sense.
00:05:45I'm pretty sure by this point I own like six copies of Sonic 1 just through gaming collections.
00:05:54Yeah, because you would get one and then you would get two
00:05:56and then you had to get the add-on for Sonic and Knuckles.
00:05:58And then there was like a like a cartridge with all three on them.
00:06:03It was and then you could add the Game Genie or the Game Shark in between.
00:06:06You have just a mountain of cartridges,
00:06:09but you would be like like superior level Sonic skills at that point.
00:06:14And then years later you got like the GameCube collection
00:06:17and then you have all those like cheap 30-in-one consoles
00:06:22and then you have a virtual console and then you know,
00:06:25we pick up the switch to play the Sega Genesis collection online.
00:06:28What's one of the many games in there?
00:06:31I was going to say isn't that so weird we get the new console,
00:06:35but I got it originally specifically to be able to play those old games.
00:06:38Like that just goes to show you how much we love these games
00:06:44and how much they're just like instilled in us like till to this day.
00:06:47That's why we're willing to spend money to go out and see these films.
00:06:51We could have been spending money on a different thing.
00:06:54Like I don't know. How would you feel if you won this prize on Total Panic?
00:06:58It has nothing to do with Sonic, but I just thought I would want to win this prize.
00:07:03Hey guys, find out how you can go to the Heavy D and The Boys concert with Greg and I.
00:07:08You want to go to the Heavy D and The Boys concert with Greg and her?
00:07:11Wait, I totally missed that. I thought it was going to cut down to like an actual shot.
00:07:15Like that was just like the b-roll of the crowd first.
00:07:17What is this for? A Heavy D show?
00:07:20Hey guys, find out how you can go to the Heavy D and The Boys concert with Greg and I.
00:07:26So not only do you get to go to the concert,
00:07:28but you get to go to the concert with the two hosts.
00:07:30That's pretty cool.
00:07:31I saw those two hosts. What does it have to do with Sonic?
00:07:34That's just what Total Panic was all about. I'd be totally panicking if they were like,
00:07:40Greg, you're going with Greg, the guy with the mullet.
00:07:45Not Greg. Now, what is it about Sonic the Hedgehog that makes him so cool?
00:07:49Well, first it's he's a hedgehog. He's blue. He's really fast.
00:07:53He has sweet red shoes,
00:07:55but as you get to kind of watch the cartoons and get more into Sonic,
00:07:58you start to learn about his attitude and he's just like he's a cool dude, man.
00:08:03Did you know he was, I believed,
00:08:07originally described as a Michael Jackson-like attitude?
00:08:13Like when he was being conceived? What? Yeah.
00:08:15They wanted to have an attitude and the Japanese,
00:08:18I believe, said we want him to have part attitude of your Michael Jackson
00:08:24because he's cool. It's got an edge. Okay, cool.
00:08:27I was going to say what kind of attitude does Michael Jackson have?
00:08:29He's just he's a smooth criminal. Michael Jackson was smooth as hell.
00:08:33So maybe. But maybe, according to this commercial,
00:08:38what you really liked Sonic the Hedgehog for was his cool skills as a magician.
00:08:44What? I know you love magicians or you love illusionists.
00:08:48I love, I love it all, man.
00:08:56Oh, look at that. Sonic morphed by Genesis again.
00:09:01The Mega Drive 2.
00:09:04Dude, that Sega like logo and sound will never get old.
00:09:09So essentially what that was, was a Japanese commercial of when you went from the regular Sega
00:09:17to then like the kind of like smaller one for us here in the States, right?
00:09:20Yeah, that budget one that you could get at the very tail end of its lifespan at like.
00:09:25Right. I remember Walmart had it for like 30 bucks
00:09:28and I remember thinking then the Sega Genesis.
00:09:32I got a PlayStation now. Dude, I had I had both.
00:09:36I think I think the first one that I got was the second one.
00:09:40So as you're sitting here trashing it,
00:09:42No, I'm pretty sure that's the one that I had my that's the model 3.
00:09:47Okay, my grandpa believe it or not had the original Sega
00:09:54and if I remember correctly that one had like a headphone jack on it where you could.
00:09:59I think that was the one wasn't it? Yes.
00:10:03Yeah. Okay. So he had that one
00:10:05and then Sega Channel came into my life
00:10:08and we had it for a month because it was entirely too expensive,
00:10:10but it was incredible. Sonic got big all around the world.
00:10:14So they had to promote it in different regions.
00:10:18This is a show in Russia where honestly to me,
00:10:24it looked like cult recruitment for like you're going to worship Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:10:31Everything about it just does not translate over here.
00:10:35First, we got Sonic on his motorcycle and weird early 3D animation.
00:10:41The music though. It's so good.
00:10:45Oh, свободные люди планеты.
00:10:49What? All hail Sonic.
00:10:55Sonic is life. Yeah, everybody drink the Sonic Kool-Aid.
00:11:01And then welcome to our church.
00:11:09If you don't follow Sonic, I will shoot you with this assault rifle that I have in my hand.
00:11:15What is this dude? This is how they promoted Sonic the Hedgehog in Russia.
00:11:19And I'm sure it's just a lady. Bring your kid up here.
00:11:21We're going to sacrifice him. What did you say about comrade Sonic?
00:11:29Look at the animation down in the corner. It's great.
00:11:34So are they like playing to see which kid can get the high score to see who's the true believer
00:11:38and the true follower of Sonic? Yeah, pretty much.
00:11:43And then they have the commercial. How could you be so stupid to say that?
00:11:47Doc Brown? Mario? We got slapstick.
00:11:52There we go. And they got their Ghostbuster mobile.
00:11:55Okay, so here comes the Ecto.
00:11:59Kid, no time for illness. I know you're sick, little Jimmy.
00:12:01So here's a here's a Sega Genesis.
00:12:08Man, it's so 90s. The Sega Master System.
00:12:15Dude, why was it only called Genesis for us?
00:12:19Well, I think overseas they couldn't clear the licensing name.
00:12:24So it's something special for us Americans and they get Master System.
00:12:29And I don't know. I'm just afraid with that Russian clip.
00:12:33It's probably sweet and innocent.
00:12:35But the guy walking around his gun and his, I don't know, like it seems sweet and innocent.
00:12:41Guys walking around with his gun, terrifying children.
00:12:45Yeah, it's perfectly fine. As we find out,
00:12:48Sonic was always advertised with that quirky weirdness that Sega brought in all its advertisements.
00:12:55Now, what's one thing that you remember about Sonic 2?
00:12:59About Sonic 2, I remember the introduction of Tails or as some know him, Miles.
00:13:05And I just remember Sonic having a sidekick that just makes the game way better, right?
00:13:10And that was basically what my sister was relegated to. Here you go.
00:13:14You're Tails. If you die, you can come back.
00:13:18If you, you know, just don't know what the hell you're doing, you're not interrupting my game.
00:13:22I'll just go faster and you're off screen, but you think you're helping.
00:13:26Joe, you have to play with your sister. I am.
00:13:30She loves Sonic 2. You'll see later on. Do you remember Tails' last name?
00:13:36I don't. I just remember his name is Miles and he didn't want people to know that was his real name.
00:13:41So he went by Tails, but I learned that in the cartoons, right?
00:13:44Yes. His last name was Prower.
00:13:47Miles Prower. Oh, okay. I get it.
00:13:51Yeah, it took me a long time. But then again, I was playing at 7, 8.
00:13:56I wasn't exactly expecting great puns.
00:13:58Dude, there's nothing still to this day more like anxiety inducing
00:14:04than when you're playing Sonic 2 and you fall underwater
00:14:08and you have to try to get back to the surface.
00:14:11Oh my gosh. It just makes you feel claustrophobic
00:14:15and you're not going to make it and then you're dead!
00:14:18Oh.
00:14:21Dude, I'm triggered right now. For real.
00:14:24Well, maybe you can get this version of Sonic 2.
00:14:28It can do a whole heck of a lot more than just be a video game.
00:14:31Now, when you buy the Sega Genesis that comes with Sonic 1, you'll get Sonic 2 absolutely free.
00:14:36Sonic 2 handles stubborn stains, embarrassing vaults, but it's no problem.
00:14:41Embarrassing vault spots even cut celery and onions.
00:14:45This thing was the air fryer of the 90s. It was.
00:14:48You get two Sonics for the price of one. Sonic 2 fits easily into any taco box.
00:14:52That's exactly where I started my Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:14:55This is great advertisement, no?
00:15:02I haven't wanted to buy an advertisement like that since we watched the
00:15:06Time Life collection on the MTV episode.
00:15:09But dude, think about it. It's funny. It's out there.
00:15:13And then think about what a value that is as like a parent, right?
00:15:17You really want to get your kid a Sega,
00:15:20but you're like, oh gosh, you know, it only comes with one game.
00:15:24Even if that game is Sonic, like how long is he going to be able to play that?
00:15:27No, ma'am. It comes with two games.
00:15:30And then you're like console, controller, Sonic 1 and 2.
00:15:33Like you're in, dude. Like that's a deal.
00:15:36And if mom misplaces her knife, bam! Character chopped, celery chopped.
00:15:42Right? I think that thing can do it all.
00:15:44Now, this wasn't the only weird ad.
00:15:47Some reason cows absolutely hate Sonic.
00:15:51I'm a cow and I know trouble when I see it.
00:15:54This is Sonic Triple Trouble, new for Game Gear.
00:15:58Dude, the Game Gear, let's go!
00:16:01But that trouble ain't nothing compared to this.
00:16:05Ouch. Ouch.
00:16:08That's bizarre, dude. Sega had some weird funny commercials though, huh?
00:16:12It's like, all right, yeah, Sonic.
00:16:15That looks like the Sonic I'd expect if I was to bring it along with me if I had a Game Gear.
00:16:19But you don't get the Game Gear because the Game Gear eats batteries.
00:16:23And I'm not buying batteries all day.
00:16:25Oh my God, dude, you would go bankrupt.
00:16:27I had one trying to just keep that thing just charged.
00:16:31It was impossible, man.
00:16:33And I remember the specific movie that really made me get the Sega Game Gear.
00:16:38Do you know what that was?
00:16:42Was it Surf Ninjas?
00:16:43Surf Ninjas, exactly.
00:16:46It's like we've been best friends since sixth grade.
00:16:49I was gonna say, I was almost about to say the three ninjas,
00:16:53but I was like, maybe Surf Ninjas.
00:16:56That's a great one too.
00:16:57But yeah, it was Surf Ninjas that made me want to get that console.
00:17:03You can't control people in real life with it.
00:17:05Just gonna toss that out there.
00:17:06It eats batteries, but it was like, to me, it was the coolest thing, dude,
00:17:10because you could bring your Sega with you.
00:17:13I loved it.
00:17:13Another PSA is you can't control the Statue of Liberty
00:17:17to go bust through the museum using the NES Advantage controller.
00:17:21That also can happen.
00:17:23No, not real.
00:17:25So you mentioned it earlier.
00:17:27You're excited for this new movie because not only do you get Tails,
00:17:29but you also get who?
00:17:31Knuckles.
00:17:32He's like, dude, he's just the evil version of Sonic.
00:17:36And I remember being jealous when my friends got that add-on pack
00:17:40of Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3,
00:17:43and then they'd be like, hey, you know what also hooks onto Sonic 2?
00:17:47We could play that and go through it as Knuckles.
00:17:49And I was like, you're spoiled.
00:17:52I want this.
00:17:54Right, and then you're just like, yeah, just second-guessing your existence.
00:17:58Like, mom, why can't I play this too?
00:18:01Let's go.
00:18:06But who's Paul Heyman?
00:18:07Oh my goodness.
00:18:09Dude, is that JYD?
00:18:17Dude, it's so cool.
00:18:24What the hell was that ending all about?
00:18:27Dude, they knew how to advertise to us.
00:18:29They were so good at it, right?
00:18:30It was just like, I see that now and I'm like, I gotta friggin have it, you know?
00:18:36So here's the pitch meeting.
00:18:37We're gonna have like these two sides and like one really loves Sonic
00:18:41and then one really loves Knuckles.
00:18:43Yeah, that sounds good.
00:18:44It's like boxing. Perfect.
00:18:45Perfect. Big spectacle.
00:18:47And then at the end, a guy who looks like Jombie the Genie from Peewee Herman farts.
00:18:54The kids will love it.
00:18:56Perfect attitude.
00:18:59But Knuckles is the heel.
00:19:01So why are people on his side?
00:19:03I don't get it.
00:19:04Sometimes you just root for a cool heel.
00:19:07But is Sonic that much of a baby face?
00:19:09Look at how they advertise Sonic 3.
00:19:11They're just advertising, hey, we know it's Groundhog's Day,
00:19:15but our hero is willing to murder that groundhog for you to focus on him instead.
00:19:21Yikes.
00:19:22I don't think this scene will be in the new Sonic movie.
00:19:24It's Groundhog Day!
00:19:27Sonic 3 is coming.
00:19:28Look for the shadow!
00:19:29Oh, look out!
00:19:31It's a TV!
00:19:31Make that Hedgehog Day.
00:19:33Oh, God.
00:19:35Like Sonic, you can pick a different day.
00:19:38Sonic 3, February 2nd.
00:19:39Wow, dude, that was wild.
00:19:43What a jackass. Sonic's just like, you know what?
00:19:46I want Groundhog's Day.
00:19:48Move your station to like another day.
00:19:51Move your stuff to another day.
00:19:53There's only room for one hedgehog in this country.
00:19:56Punxsutawney Phil, never heard of her.
00:19:59It's him.
00:20:01Whatever.
00:20:02Now, you'd think maybe Sonic's the bad guy,
00:20:04but this commercial makes it perfectly clear who's good and who's bad.
00:20:08Sega presents one champion of good.
00:20:13Dude, there he is.
00:20:14Pawn of evil.
00:20:16Not only is it the greatest Sonic game ever,
00:20:18it also comes with lock-on technology.
00:20:21Dude, I was so jealous of that.
00:20:23Yeah, but can it chop celery?
00:20:25Sonic 3, but 34 megs of power.
00:20:27New worlds and surprise endings.
00:20:30Sonic and Knuckles with lock-on technology.
00:20:32That's such a good logo, too.
00:20:34No, dude, it really is.
00:20:35It's like Ying and Yang, Sonic, Knuckles.
00:20:38But where's Tails in all that?
00:20:40Did he kind of take the back seat?
00:20:42Because he's Sonic's like sidekick.
00:20:44Listen, we're selling on pure Knuckles.
00:20:47Knuckles is where it's at, but he's not bad.
00:20:50He's a pawn of evil.
00:20:53That meant that face turn, you could see it a mile away.
00:20:56Right, because every bad guy actually thinks what they're doing is for good, right?
00:21:01Yeah, and then they get that one pun.
00:21:03They're like, you used me, Robotnik.
00:21:07You told me that Sonic caused all this,
00:21:10but I see now it was always you.
00:21:14I think I just spoiled the new movie,
00:21:16even though the movie's based on the old game.
00:21:18So what am I really spoiling?
00:21:20I thought you were just about to bust out.
00:21:22It was me, Austin.
00:21:23It was me all along.
00:21:25Now, do you know who actually came up with Sonic 3?
00:21:29Like, they took the time to create it.
00:21:31The folks that made Sonic 1 and 2?
00:21:34The fine folks at Sega Genesis?
00:21:36Yeah.
00:21:37No, prepare to have your mind blown.
00:21:40It was actually done by Santa's elves.
00:21:43We went to the village.
00:21:44We told them we had this great idea for a new game called Sonic and Knuckles.
00:21:48It's Knuckles in his own game.
00:21:50Plus, it has new technology.
00:21:52So you can play Knuckles in Sonic 2 and 3.
00:21:54It's revolutionary.
00:21:56He just laughed at us.
00:21:59Oh, no.
00:22:00Santa has no talent.
00:22:02Who's laughing now?
00:22:03Yeah, that's because Santa's actually an arms dealer for the Soviets.
00:22:08Sega Genesis, Sonic and Knuckles,
00:22:10and other game cartridges, each sold separately.
00:22:13Who has to worry about video game production
00:22:15when you get arms-dealing money?
00:22:19Yeah, that's an inside joke from an older episode.
00:22:23So if you're one of the 0.5 people that have actually seen both of these,
00:22:27thank you.
00:22:28Did you recognize one of those elves?
00:22:30You know, I don't think so.
00:22:32One of those was Roland,
00:22:35who occasionally, probably once a season,
00:22:37showed up to torture Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
00:22:41Nice.
00:22:41And he was in love with her, and he kept trying to kidnap her.
00:22:45And then every time Harvey would defend her, he'd be like,
00:22:47Oh, it's Harvey the farm boy.
00:22:50I don't live on a farm.
00:22:51Sure, farm boy.
00:22:54That was just his, like, go-to insult?
00:22:56Yeah.
00:22:57Oh, look who it is.
00:22:59Farm boy.
00:23:00Isn't this your aunt's friend that I met last year?
00:23:03If that's who I said he was.
00:23:04Wanna make something of it, farm boy?
00:23:07Not really.
00:23:08So to get Sonic 3, you had to convince somebody back in the day,
00:23:12can we go to the store, or can I get this for Christmas?
00:23:15And then you'd see this ad, and you'd point it, throw it right in their face.
00:23:20Look, mom, I'm gonna save you money.
00:23:22But first, let's talk about how you can reserve the game for $70?
00:23:27Is that what Sega games were going for? Seriously?
00:23:30Yeah.
00:23:31Bro, there's no way.
00:23:33There's no, that's crazy.
00:23:36Hey, if you put down that $10 reserve payment,
00:23:40you can get Sonic music CD with original music from the Sonic games.
00:23:46Hurry, while supplies last.
00:23:49I mean, that's kind of cool.
00:23:50So if you think, you get the game, and then you get the CD,
00:23:53so not only can you drive your mom crazy in the house,
00:23:55but you can make her put it into the player in the car and drive her crazy there, too.
00:23:59So, good thinking, Sega.
00:24:01And then while you're waiting for dinner, and you're super, super hungry, you just go,
00:24:05do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
00:24:09Damn it, Joe, stop it.
00:24:13Pretty early on, Sonic started breaking through into mainstream pop culture.
00:24:19You would watch something, and they would play Sonic.
00:24:21So you knew that that show was hip because you're hip,
00:24:25and you're playing Sonic, which is also hip.
00:24:28This was Hanging With Mr. Cooper,
00:24:31and Mr. Cooper knew exactly what was up.
00:24:34Yo, Geneva, could you keep the noise down?
00:24:37Because they're about to show a clip from Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:24:41Oh, okay.
00:24:42Mark, what's Sonic the Hedgehog?
00:24:43Grown-ass man, Coop.
00:24:45What's Sonic the Hedgehog?
00:24:46I don't believe you said that.
00:24:48What's Sonic the Hedgehog?
00:24:51Hey, what's Sonic the Hedgehog?
00:24:52You knew that was coming.
00:24:53You've never played Sonic the Hedgehog?
00:24:54Yeah, yeah, tell her, tell her.
00:24:56Oh, boy, where have you been?
00:24:58Nerd!
00:25:00Yeah, where have you been?
00:25:01Cartoon, right after the Wild West Cowboys in Moon Mesa.
00:25:04Yeah, don't you know anything?
00:25:07Yeah, come on.
00:25:08No wonder her dad stood her up.
00:25:12Oh!
00:25:14That's just that TGIF lifestyle that we also covered in an episode.
00:25:19But I don't see how Sonic fits into this universe.
00:25:22But can you just think of that time period where it's like,
00:25:26kids, they knew what was up. Sonic was cool.
00:25:29Sonic's now on TV. We gotta watch Sonic.
00:25:33Dude, not only would you play Sonic in the video games,
00:25:36but Sonic had his own cartoon show and his own action figures.
00:25:41And so you would play Sonic, you know, you'd watch TGIF, right?
00:25:47And then after, you would stay up late playing Sonic,
00:25:51wake up early playing Sonic.
00:25:53It was just, dude.
00:25:54And then bust open the cartoons.
00:25:56Your whole life could be Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:25:58And then you get hungry, and where are you gonna go?
00:26:00You're gonna go to the Sonic drive-thru.
00:26:02That would make almost too much sense.
00:26:04But Sonic wants to get that cash money.
00:26:07So where's he really going?
00:26:09To the bank.
00:26:11He's going to McDonald's.
00:26:13Okay, damn it.
00:26:15You said cash money.
00:26:17Who's gonna pay him?
00:26:19McD's.
00:26:21Ronald.
00:26:23That's actually live footage of me and my sister.
00:26:25Yeah.
00:26:28Dude, Knuckles, Sonic.
00:26:30Look at that thing, it flies.
00:26:32Robotnik, that son of a B.
00:26:36Holy cow, dude.
00:26:41What?
00:26:43And I have all of those.
00:26:45Dude, look at that.
00:26:47Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik.
00:26:51And let me just say how great Jim Carrey was as Robotnik in the first one.
00:26:55Like, I'm looking forward to seeing him again.
00:26:57I just saw the toys for that thing at the Target.
00:26:59Really?
00:27:01Yeah, and it was the actual Jim Carrey version of Robotnik.
00:27:03It wasn't like, oh, we can sell regular Sonic toys.
00:27:05They're actually selling Sonic movie-based toys.
00:27:07Which is kind of like when they sold the Mario toys,
00:27:09if you see down here,
00:27:11based on the movie.
00:27:13Right, right.
00:27:15And then didn't they also back in the day have like,
00:27:17you had your turtle toys for the cartoon,
00:27:19but then you also had them for the films?
00:27:21Yes.
00:27:23Yeah, those are cool.
00:27:26So those McDonald toys for Sonic the Hedgehog 3,
00:27:28I think were some of the very first instances
00:27:30of making Sonic merchandise.
00:27:32And guess who had to have those?
00:27:34You did.
00:27:36That's right.
00:27:38Me and my sister and I are sneaking those onto the bus.
00:27:40You can see in her hand,
00:27:42she's got Tails.
00:27:44And then also I think I got a Leonardo in my hand as well.
00:27:46We're bringing all the toys to school.
00:27:48Yeah, why not?
00:27:50You can cross-pollinate.
00:27:52Come on.
00:27:54That's called an extended universe,
00:27:56before Marvel got involved.
00:27:58Again, we got another picture with Tails.
00:28:00Yeah, because she got to play as the sidekick.
00:28:02So that probably became her favorite character, no?
00:28:04Exactly.
00:28:06Dude, look at the plush.
00:28:08So this is a 1993 Cal toy,
00:28:10stuffed Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:28:12And I love that thing.
00:28:14I guess so.
00:28:16It's got the freaking death grip on it,
00:28:18because it's so cool.
00:28:20It's got the death grip on it.
00:28:23It's got the freaking death grip on it,
00:28:25because I'm bringing Sonic everywhere I go.
00:28:27It's like you're saying,
00:28:29if you want to take this from me,
00:28:31you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
00:28:35Then, like every kid's toy,
00:28:37you have to have an RC car version,
00:28:39even though Sonic didn't really drive back then.
00:28:43Wasn't that always a weird thing, though?
00:28:45There always had to be an RC car version?
00:28:47Why couldn't it have just been of Sonic?
00:28:49And his feet could have spun around like it does in the game.
00:28:51That would have been dope.
00:28:53Funny enough, when I was at Target,
00:28:55when I saw the 4-pack of the Jim Carrey-based Robotnik
00:28:57when I saw the 4-pack of the Jim Carrey-based Robotnik
00:28:59with the new cast,
00:29:01next to it was Sonic on a hoverboard,
00:29:03next to it was Sonic on a hoverboard,
00:29:05kind of like a rolling spinny ball thing.
00:29:07kind of like a rolling spinny ball thing.
00:29:09That was remote-control based.
00:29:11That sounds kind of sweet.
00:29:13It looked a lot higher quality than this thing,
00:29:15which I also owned.
00:29:18The original Sonic RC car.
00:29:20The original Sonic RC car.
00:29:22Yeah, that thing looks like it would break in not even a day.
00:29:24Yeah, that thing looks like it would break in not even a day.
00:29:26Oh, it was super cheap.
00:29:28You gotta love how Sonic has half a gangster grip on his car.
00:29:30You gotta love how Sonic has half a gangster grip on his car.
00:29:32Yeah.
00:29:34And his head is way too big for what would actually be sized in real life.
00:29:36And his head is way too big for what would actually be sized in real life.
00:29:38I love how you can see his picture on the front,
00:29:40I love how you can see his picture on the front,
00:29:42and then on each side, and there's probably one on the back, too.
00:29:44Oh my god, you're right.
00:29:46I love seeing that now.
00:29:48And on the side, it's normal looking.
00:29:50Yeah, he's just like normal, cruising,
00:29:52and then in the front, he's like face to the windshield.
00:29:54and then in the front, he's like face to the windshield.
00:29:56Like the only way that could actually happen
00:29:58if it's like one of those cartoon movie effects
00:30:00where he's not wearing a seatbelt,
00:30:02and then you get that.
00:30:04but not so freaking big like that.
00:30:06but not so freaking big like that.
00:30:08Here's another look at this fine piece of equipment.
00:30:10Here's another look at this fine piece of equipment.
00:30:12Nico really made a lot of money on this license.
00:30:14Nico really made a lot of money on this license.
00:30:16You like the bumper?
00:30:18Dude, do you really think so?
00:30:20Because I think it would spread amongst parents fast.
00:30:22Because I think it would spread amongst parents fast.
00:30:24Like, don't bother getting that for them.
00:30:26It was broken in half a day.
00:30:28How many Tiger electronic toys did you own?
00:30:30How many Tiger electronic toys did you own?
00:30:32Fair point, let's move on.
00:30:34They all sucked.
00:30:36And plus, this car has attitude.
00:30:38It even says so.
00:30:40Does it say attitude on the back?
00:30:42Because Sonic has attitude, okay?
00:30:44Because Sonic has attitude, okay?
00:30:46We gotta really hammer that in.
00:30:48No, he does.
00:30:50Just like Michael Jackson has attitude, right?
00:30:52Just like Michael Jackson has attitude, right?
00:30:54He's very cool.
00:30:56The Japanese know us very well.
00:30:58Dude, you didn't grow up as a kid of the 90s
00:31:00if you didn't have some resemblance of a Trapper Keeper.
00:31:02if you didn't have some resemblance of a Trapper Keeper.
00:31:04And there's many options,
00:31:06and Sonic and Knuckles is one of them.
00:31:08So, as much as I love that logo,
00:31:10I don't think I own this Trapper Keeper.
00:31:12I don't think I own this Trapper Keeper.
00:31:14Dude, that's a bummer.
00:31:16I mean, I didn't either, but I would totally want that
00:31:18because their logo is just so freaking cool, man.
00:31:20because their logo is just so freaking cool, man.
00:31:22It really is.
00:31:24What is fat body Sonic?
00:31:26Look at him!
00:31:28Why is he so plump?
00:31:30Eating a little bit too many chili dogs.
00:31:32Eating a little bit too many chili dogs.
00:31:34He loves them.
00:31:36Why does Sonic have a Buddha belly?
00:31:38It's so strange.
00:31:40Alright, we have to settle with
00:31:42I guess you could call them cheap toys from McDonald's.
00:31:44I guess you could call them cheap toys from McDonald's.
00:31:46And the Japanese get wind-up fat belly Sonic.
00:31:48And the Japanese get wind-up fat belly Sonic.
00:31:50So, you know, nobody's quite nailing
00:31:52Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise yet.
00:31:54No, it's kind of different
00:31:56anywhere in the world that you go, isn't it?
00:31:58anywhere in the world that you go, isn't it?
00:32:00So this guy actually filmed
00:32:02when Sonic the Hedgehog was used to advertise
00:32:04when Sonic the Hedgehog was used to advertise
00:32:07This is what you would get in your meal.
00:32:09I never knew that.
00:32:11I kind of want some cookie crisp right now.
00:32:13I like the sheet that he has.
00:32:15I like the sheet that he has.
00:32:17Now, is that cheap or is that cheap?
00:32:19Oh, that's so cheap.
00:32:21They could have at least turned it into a spoon.
00:32:23They could have at least turned it into a spoon.
00:32:25They didn't even bother painting it.
00:32:27They didn't even bother painting it.
00:32:29No, you only got the same color, didn't you?
00:32:31No, you only got the same color, didn't you?
00:32:33Look at that kid.
00:32:35He looks like Sonic.
00:32:37I don't know, he looks more to me like
00:32:39he's like, oh my god, I could have accidentally eaten this.
00:32:41he's like, oh my god, I could have accidentally eaten this.
00:32:43Wait, are these Pogs?
00:32:45You would get Pogs based on
00:32:47Sonic AM cartoon.
00:32:49Let's go!
00:32:51So not only are we going to sell
00:32:53cookie crisp with Sonic because
00:32:55obviously cookies and Sonic go hand in hand
00:32:57obviously cookies and Sonic go hand in hand
00:32:59that's why Keebler jumped in on the action here.
00:33:01I'm a little afraid of this advertising, though.
00:33:03You won't believe what they're
00:33:05putting inside Keebler products these days.
00:33:07Oh gosh, do we want to know?
00:33:09Oh gosh, do we want to know?
00:33:13Not what that looks like Sonic's given us.
00:33:15Yeah, it's almost like he's
00:33:17pooping in all the cookies or something.
00:33:19If you remember, I don't know, going to
00:33:21like the supermarket or
00:33:23roller skating, you could get
00:33:25cheap novelty stickers and
00:33:27they'd even come in things like
00:33:29Cracker Jacks, which is where
00:33:31we get these next three.
00:33:33Dude, I will give you $100
00:33:35I'll Venmo you right now if you get
00:33:37that as a tattoo.
00:33:41That would be sweet.
00:33:43Ooh, that could be tempting.
00:33:45I might do that.
00:33:47Sonic on the beach, just
00:33:49chillin'. That's a vibe right there.
00:33:51That's what the kids call a vibe.
00:33:53Dude, Sonic caught a vibe.
00:33:55Cause I mean, this one's kind of
00:33:57generic. I mean, if I got this, I wouldn't
00:33:59be that mad. It's still Sonic.
00:34:01Running away, yeah.
00:34:03Oh dude, you gotta have that one, right?
00:34:05Oh yeah, and you know this
00:34:07probably was on some kid's
00:34:09lunchbox or Trapper Keeper
00:34:11but it also got ripped up
00:34:13and it's half fading away.
00:34:15But you're like, this kid's cool though.
00:34:17He likes Sonic just like I like Sonic.
00:34:19Right, and you could also take all of
00:34:21those stickers and you
00:34:23could put them on your skateboard too.
00:34:25The other thing that happened in the 90s
00:34:27and we ran into it before
00:34:29is it always seemed like something was
00:34:31being created in a lab somewhere
00:34:33because it's just too damn cool.
00:34:35Right, mad science, wacky hijinks,
00:34:37there was always some sort of evil scientist
00:34:39behind there.
00:34:45That was a quest?
00:34:47Yeah.
00:34:49Really spending their time
00:34:51working on something important.
00:34:53I love the sound effects, dude.
00:34:56These kids are terrible scientists.
00:35:00Why were there so many explosions
00:35:02just to make a fruity roll-up?
00:35:08What?
00:35:10You could be president of Sega for one day.
00:35:12That's probably why they went bankrupt almost.
00:35:14Dude, that's like when
00:35:16any radio station
00:35:18will let you be a DJ
00:35:20for a day. You'll come in,
00:35:22they'll give you all the lines, they'll give you all day
00:35:24to cut them, and then you'll be on the air
00:35:26the next week. That's all that is.
00:35:28You're not pulling some BS over me over here.
00:35:30Come on.
00:35:32Let's make Sonic 4!
00:35:34We're not making Sonic 4.
00:35:36Nope.
00:35:38I'm president!
00:35:40Not really.
00:35:42No, you just get to sit in that chair for a day.
00:35:44Can't I do anything?
00:35:46Fine, you get to do one thing.
00:35:48You can shut up.
00:35:50Sonic's gonna sell some pasta.
00:35:52Alright.
00:35:54You know, I don't know if that's a wise
00:35:56idea. Hulk Hogan has the market
00:35:58cornered.
00:36:00Dude, that's a huge TV.
00:36:02Don't you love when your mom
00:36:04throws a can at you
00:36:06while you're not even paying attention?
00:36:08It's gonna hit him in the head, please.
00:36:10Oh, what a grab.
00:36:12I'm pretty sure that was
00:36:14Orange Cassidy as a teenager.
00:36:16How did he
00:36:18put it in the console?
00:36:20What are you playing for lunch?
00:36:22Dude.
00:36:24I would eat that right now.
00:36:26Straight up.
00:36:28I will Venmo you $100 if you ate some
00:36:30old pasta from Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:36:32Expired March
00:36:341993
00:36:36or 94, whatever.
00:36:38I wanna know how pissed off that mom's been
00:36:40the last week that today of all
00:36:42days is like, alright, you know what? I'm throwing this can
00:36:44right at you.
00:36:46Do you think he was like, I don't know,
00:36:48just like, I'll come out when I'm
00:36:50ready.
00:36:52Yeah, not come
00:36:54out. It's not like he was in his room. That was
00:36:56the living room, so nobody else can
00:36:58do anything in there. They can't watch
00:37:00their shows, their movies, the news.
00:37:02Nope, because
00:37:04friggin, you know, Timmy
00:37:06has got the TV occupied playing Sonic
00:37:08and now we have to make him Sonic pasta
00:37:10and we gotta listen to that
00:37:12damn Sonic CD in the car
00:37:14and do something
00:37:16about this. Jed
00:37:18Jed is dad's jet. Okay.
00:37:20Yeah, I don't know. I'm just winging
00:37:22it, bro. Maybe
00:37:24this delicious pasta would go great
00:37:26with ranch dressing
00:37:28which Sonic is selling
00:37:30also
00:37:34What? What about Sonic says
00:37:36that guy, that hedgehog can
00:37:38sell some freaking ranch dressing.
00:37:40He knows his pasta. He knows his
00:37:42cereal. He knows his ranch.
00:37:44I mean, if I thought it was weird
00:37:46that Ric Flair was selling lotto tickets
00:37:48how do I feel about this?
00:37:54Pizza ranch? What? Is that a real thing?
00:37:56Is that disgusting or really appetizing
00:37:58sounding?
00:38:00Dude, that sounds
00:38:02like you've been in the bathroom a long
00:38:04time.
00:38:08See, are they just like sticking
00:38:10Okay, so they're not even on the actual
00:38:12Listen, kids
00:38:14eat your pizza ranch
00:38:16and you may get a game here
00:38:18and under each
00:38:20label you can get a little
00:38:22Sonic
00:38:24I don't know. Were they stamps?
00:38:26They were super little. You know what?
00:38:28I'll pass on the pizza ranch even
00:38:30if you're enticing me with the world's
00:38:32cheapest giveaway. Yeah, I
00:38:34think dude, I've never liked ranch. I'll
00:38:36never eat ranch and
00:38:38not even nacho
00:38:40Not even nacho cheese ranch or whatever
00:38:42they were advertising.
00:38:44No, but let me read this disclaimer.
00:38:46The following commercial may be shocking
00:38:48to some viewers.
00:38:50Yes, because this is some sort of
00:38:52treat that other countries got
00:38:54and honestly
00:38:56how did anyone
00:38:58eat it? I almost puked
00:39:00just hearing the ingredients
00:39:02even though it's probably just like an ice cream.
00:39:10Where are his eyeballs?
00:39:12He's just like a
00:39:14mushy face.
00:39:22Where'd you get these from? Like the ice
00:39:24cream truck, do you think?
00:39:26Milk ice with shock rocks?
00:39:30I like the whole idea with the shock
00:39:32rocks, but why couldn't it be just like a regular popsicle
00:39:34with the shock rocks?
00:39:36Because they wanted to sell you that milk
00:39:38ice, which I guess
00:39:40it's, I mean, doesn't
00:39:42sound like it would be
00:39:44awful, but also I don't like the sound of
00:39:46milk ice. Yeah,
00:39:48what the hell does that even mean?
00:39:50And shock rocks. Just frozen milk?
00:39:52And the shock
00:39:54rock is like, wait, is that just
00:39:56pop rocks somewhere else? Pop rocks, yeah
00:39:58but they can't use the name, of course.
00:40:00No, and
00:40:02it'll probably make you look like Robotnik if you have
00:40:04too many of them. Dude, Robotnik
00:40:06didn't have any eyeballs. He didn't have any teeth.
00:40:08He didn't even have a tongue. The guy has no insides.
00:40:10He's just exterior.
00:40:12That's Jim Carrey's
00:40:14look for the third film.
00:40:16Oh gosh, it'd be nightmare inducing.
00:40:18So now Sonic is popular
00:40:20enough to be put on t-shirts.
00:40:22Like this one.
00:40:24Dude, I would wear that shirt
00:40:26today. Like that's
00:40:28to me, that's cool. That
00:40:30screams 90s. It's got a great drawing.
00:40:32It's got, I don't really know what
00:40:34Sonic has to do with basketball. There's no
00:40:36team that he's wearing. The Super
00:40:38Sonics? Looney Tunes that
00:40:40we've seen. Yeah, that'd be perfect.
00:40:42But it's a dope shirt and I would
00:40:44definitely wear it. I don't
00:40:46know, to me it looks more like there could
00:40:48have been a hoop and a basket there
00:40:50but it got stolen by Robotnik
00:40:52and he's kind of landing like, wait,
00:40:54where's the hoop?
00:40:56That's not slam
00:40:58dunk. That's more of a, oh
00:41:00no. I'd
00:41:02love to see on the back
00:41:04a picture of Tails, right?
00:41:06And he has his tail spinning in the air
00:41:08and he's just holding the ball over
00:41:10the rim and he's gonna drop it in.
00:41:12That's a million dollar idea.
00:41:14Let's do it. I will contact
00:41:16Sega 30 years ago
00:41:18and I'll tell them
00:41:20I don't know, forget this promotional
00:41:22shirt right here.
00:41:24Are you up to it?
00:41:26Are you up to it?
00:41:28I get it. Sonic 2.
00:41:30That's just
00:41:32dude, I don't know, that looks
00:41:34like you have
00:41:36a cousin that can draw well
00:41:38and they did that. It's not
00:41:40exactly great but it's like, damn,
00:41:42you can draw. That's pretty good.
00:41:44And it was probably done and
00:41:46bulk ordered for the hundred employees
00:41:48who worked on the game
00:41:50and everyone gets a promotional
00:41:52shirt at the company event
00:41:54and they all get their
00:41:56copy of Sonic. Only
00:41:58one because the rest is gonna be sold at retail
00:42:00but you worked on it so
00:42:02the company's nice enough to give you at least one
00:42:04copy. Yeah.
00:42:06Now this, I totally would have
00:42:08rocked when I was little.
00:42:10You know, I like the
00:42:12all over print style shirts
00:42:14but I just don't think this one looks like it was well
00:42:16made because you can see like under
00:42:18the arms there, it's just white
00:42:20unless that's supposed to be
00:42:22pipes. I can't really tell.
00:42:24That might be part of the pipe.
00:42:26Okay, I like the
00:42:28score and the rings and all that stuff.
00:42:30It's kind of cool. It's certainly
00:42:32a lot cooler than this one here.
00:42:34Well this looks like something that they would have sold
00:42:36down in like a pier or something where
00:42:38somebody's selling bootleg
00:42:40merchandise and they're like
00:42:42kids love Sonic, I'm not
00:42:44gonna get sued because if I do I'm just gonna
00:42:46pack up this little booth and
00:42:48bolt.
00:42:50Got a juice for a chili dog.
00:42:52That means he needs to go
00:42:54get one.
00:42:56Does it? I thought it meant he was gonna
00:42:58do steroids. That's all I know
00:43:00about getting juice.
00:43:02No, juice like
00:43:04speed. Like I gotta run for
00:43:06a chili dog. I gotta go get a chili dog.
00:43:08Come on, dude.
00:43:10If he's gonna work out then
00:43:12he won't end up wearing one of those fat bellied Sonics
00:43:14that we saw earlier.
00:43:16No, those are exclusive in Japan.
00:43:18And then you could
00:43:20get your Sonic
00:43:22Shatterman jacket.
00:43:24Dude, all day, every day I would rock
00:43:26that. That is so cool. What does the back look
00:43:28like?
00:43:30Oh, dude! Go back!
00:43:32I saw this and
00:43:34I thought, man, if they made this
00:43:36on like a chalk line or something
00:43:38you would be linking it and saying
00:43:40hey, guess what I just bought?
00:43:42Oh, dude, yeah.
00:43:44I would drop like a clean 150,
00:43:46200 for that. Just because look
00:43:48at the patchwork on the
00:43:50arms and on the back.
00:43:52Ah, dude, that is sick.
00:43:54I like it's color scheme too. That red, white, and blue.
00:43:56But it's not like overly
00:43:58patriotic or anything. But it's more
00:44:00just Sonic red, white, and blue.
00:44:02Yeah, you got
00:44:04Tails over here.
00:44:06You got Robotnik with no insides.
00:44:08You got Sonic in the middle. Sega on
00:44:10the other. Dude, that's
00:44:12fire. Where can we find that?
00:44:14We're gonna look this up.
00:44:16One thing I tried
00:44:18looking up, because I owned these when I was
00:44:20younger, were Sonic
00:44:22the Hedgehog shoes.
00:44:24I remember
00:44:26Sonic having shoes.
00:44:28And this was something you'd get at
00:44:30Payless?
00:44:32And maybe like Kids R Us
00:44:34in their sections?
00:44:36I probably had these. Let's see them.
00:44:38These were the
00:44:40Sonic the Hedgehog shoes
00:44:42for the kid who really
00:44:44loved Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:44:46Dude, you know,
00:44:48at that age, I don't know.
00:44:50But now, at this age, I do
00:44:52know. And the answer is yes.
00:44:54If I could get a clean pair of those never
00:44:56worn before, are you kidding me?
00:44:58I would rock those and you would turn so many
00:45:00heads. People would be like,
00:45:02Dude, I used to think kids that
00:45:04wore those when I was
00:45:06younger were losers. But look at these now.
00:45:08And the bow biters
00:45:10on top? Are you kidding me?
00:45:12Dude!
00:45:14I think we just found your favorite homie's
00:45:16new look.
00:45:18Dude, I have shoes in my
00:45:20hold on.
00:45:26This is really important
00:45:28to me.
00:45:30Dude, at one point in my life,
00:45:32not far ago,
00:45:34I started bringing
00:45:36these back on my
00:45:38shoes. That's a cookie
00:45:40monster bow biter.
00:45:42And now, we're gonna have to
00:45:44get you Sonic bow biters.
00:45:46They're probably
00:45:48made in such bulk that you could still
00:45:50probably get it at a decent price.
00:45:52Maybe just a hint above what it was for retail
00:45:54back then. Right.
00:45:56Dude, I'm in. Now, the other thing
00:45:58you could get... Dude, you take those and you
00:46:00throw them on some brand new white Air Force
00:46:021s? Woo! All the honeys
00:46:04come flocking. Four
00:46:06VHS's with Attitude.
00:46:08So, was this...
00:46:10Were these, like, tapes of the
00:46:12cartoon show? That's right. Sonic
00:46:14got so damn big, he had to
00:46:16be on TV.
00:46:18Dude.
00:46:26On Fox 53.
00:46:28You love that hedgehog.
00:46:30Love.
00:46:32Who did Sonic's voice? Do you know?
00:46:34Ya boy.
00:46:36Love.
00:46:38Big TGIF.
00:46:44Did Sonic do that?
00:46:46Steve Urkel did
00:46:48Sonic's voice?
00:46:50Are you lying to me?
00:46:52There's no way.
00:46:54Oh, yeah. Jaleel White
00:46:56was the OG Sonic for that
00:46:58cartoon and the more
00:47:00adult-oriented
00:47:02version of it.
00:47:04Joe by himself is
00:47:06watching adult-oriented Sonic
00:47:08shows. I just want to put that out to the universe
00:47:10right now and clear that right up.
00:47:12It's the difference between
00:47:14Y and Y7. Not
00:47:16the difference between Y
00:47:18and, uh, dark
00:47:20sections of the internet.
00:47:22Whatever helps you sleep,
00:47:24brother. I don't judge ya.
00:47:28Okay, he did
00:47:30say juice. Let's juice.
00:47:32Dude, I'm
00:47:34blown away. I didn't know that was Jaleel White
00:47:36all these years. You just opened up my eyes, man.
00:47:38And Sonic is apparently working with
00:47:40Freedom Fighters. Just
00:47:42sort of a term that was different back then
00:47:44than it's associated with now.
00:47:46And he's also working with
00:47:48Ronald McDonald. Well, yeah. How are we
00:47:50going to advertise Sonic the Hedgehog stuff
00:47:52in France?
00:47:54You gotta
00:47:56bring in the heavy hitters. You gotta bring in Ronald.
00:47:58Pop it and lock it, Ronald.
00:48:02You unhappy me,
00:48:04weird animatronic kid reacher?
00:48:06Yeah. There he is.
00:48:12I thought he was about to take a selfie.
00:48:14No, just give him a
00:48:16cheap electronic. I know,
00:48:18that really did look like...
00:48:20Yep.
00:48:22But if it was really Sonic, he probably would
00:48:24have taken 50 pictures at once.
00:48:26Yeah, because he's really fast.
00:48:28And then, in Italy,
00:48:30he was so popular that people would buy
00:48:32his animation cells.
00:48:34His what?
00:48:36You know when you'd
00:48:38watch a cartoon, they have to
00:48:40hand draw every kind of frame back in the
00:48:42day? Right.
00:48:44So you could own an individual frame
00:48:46that they were no longer using anymore.
00:48:48Dude, that is cool.
00:48:54I would totally buy that.
00:48:56Oh, dude, are you kidding me?
00:48:58Now that I'm adult,
00:49:00and I can waste my money on what I want,
00:49:02absolutely.
00:49:04I mean, if you had good, solid
00:49:06wall art, I've actually looked into it.
00:49:08Like, you could get
00:49:10real Ghostbusters,
00:49:12or, like,
00:49:14Garfield and friends.
00:49:16And they're not that expensive.
00:49:18No, after we're done
00:49:20with this, can you do a shot of me
00:49:22here, with my
00:49:24palm out, and put Sonic in my palm?
00:49:26I'll make that the thumbnail for the
00:49:28YouTube page.
00:49:30Please do.
00:49:32And then in Japan, they decided,
00:49:34Hey, Sonic
00:49:36animation? No way.
00:49:38We're going with this look for Sonic, which
00:49:40didn't work for me.
00:49:42He's not Plump again, is he?
00:49:46Oh, he's like Claymation.
00:49:48Yeah, it's like Celebrity
00:49:50Deathmatch over here.
00:49:52That's that Michael Jackson
00:49:54attitude they were talking about.
00:49:56Oh, totally.
00:49:58Thriller!
00:50:00You know, I
00:50:02respect all the effort, and
00:50:04all the time, for sure, that probably
00:50:06went into making that.
00:50:08You know what I mean?
00:50:10But gosh, it's just unsettling.
00:50:12And, like, what was that hopping around that he did?
00:50:14I've never...that looked like he was doing the stanky
00:50:16leg. Yeah, I think they
00:50:18ran out of frames, and they couldn't get him to run
00:50:20across and back. So, like, we're just gonna have him
00:50:22hop over and come right back.
00:50:24Unfortunately,
00:50:26us bashing on the Japanese
00:50:28commercial kind of made me feel like this jackass,
00:50:30who was
00:50:32part of a special promotion
00:50:34where they were
00:50:36going to show you what it was like for
00:50:38the world premiere of the
00:50:40Sonic Adventure series
00:50:42on the Dreamcast.
00:50:44This guy is straight out of
00:50:46the 99, 2000,
00:50:482001, some 41 wannabe
00:50:50catalog. Well, look at him.
00:50:52He's wearing a New York shirt. He's not from
00:50:54New York. He doesn't like any New York
00:50:56teams. He got that t-shirt
00:50:58at American Eagle. I think I used to have
00:51:00the same one.
00:51:08Gosh, could you put a little excitement into
00:51:10it? We're trying to sell video games here, dog.
00:51:14His only excitement is getting more hair gel.
00:51:16Yeah, the Dreamcast
00:51:18is still slept on, dude. That was a cool
00:51:20console.
00:51:24It was just too little, too
00:51:26late.
00:51:28Are you?
00:51:30Because you look like you're gonna
00:51:32murder somebody.
00:51:34Super, super excited.
00:51:38If I kill somebody in Japan,
00:51:40they'll never know, because I'm
00:51:42on the next flight back home to New
00:51:44York.
00:51:46They'll never know where I live.
00:51:50Oh, boy. And what was he listening to?
00:51:52All killer, no filler.
00:51:54I was gonna say, he's listening to Sub-41.
00:51:56Absolutely, bro.
00:51:58Who I'm going to see in another month.
00:52:00Cross another one of those bands off the list.
00:52:02I expect a full review, bro.
00:52:04Now old Derek
00:52:06from Sub-41 is able to get himself
00:52:08an interview with our boy Sonic.
00:52:10Excuse me, excuse me.
00:52:12Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions about your new game?
00:52:16I thought that was
00:52:18his voice for a second.
00:52:22Yeah, screw you
00:52:24too, buddy.
00:52:26Get your programs here.
00:52:28Dude, look at all
00:52:30the press, though. Look at those cool magazines.
00:52:36You gotta love that he's
00:52:38insulting them, like, I can't believe they're all
00:52:40speaking Japanese. Well, yeah, you're in Japan, buddy.
00:52:42Yeah, like, dude, what do you want, man?
00:52:46God, doesn't anyone speak English?
00:52:48No.
00:52:50No, dude, this isn't New York.
00:52:52Forget about it.
00:52:54So this is
00:52:56Sonic Adventures on the Dreamcast.
00:52:58I was going to say, this is Dreamcast
00:53:00gameplay, right? Yeah, but I know
00:53:02you used your Dreamcast for something completely
00:53:04different. Yeah, we had
00:53:06LOA, Log On America.
00:53:08We had the bootleg America
00:53:10Online.
00:53:16Dude, it's so weird-looking,
00:53:18isn't it? It's like 3D,
00:53:20but it's... It's so weird-looking,
00:53:22the host.
00:53:24Yeah.
00:53:26Dude, Robotnik.
00:53:28It's funny, too, because
00:53:30they always refer to all this stuff as
00:53:32cutting-edge, which it was,
00:53:34but it's not cutting-edge now,
00:53:36so it feels like...
00:53:38Oh, God.
00:53:40Sonic and Dreamcast
00:53:42will be introduced in Japan on December 27.
00:53:44This guy definitely worked in radio at some point
00:53:46in his life, I can promise you.
00:53:48That's actually your boss.
00:53:50I bet you didn't know that.
00:53:52Right.
00:53:54Hey, can you tell me about these
00:53:56Japanese commercials? No, no, no!
00:53:58Don't bring those up! I don't want to get cancelled!
00:54:02And maybe, if he was lucky, he could
00:54:04have hosted the Starkids
00:54:06events, which I had to pull this clip
00:54:08for this episode. If you want to see the rest
00:54:10of Starkids, go to this part.
00:54:12That was a fun one, yeah. This is
00:54:14when all the kids got to play
00:54:16Sonic the Hedgehog, because
00:54:18if the cool celebrities are
00:54:20doing it, well then, I
00:54:22got to.
00:54:24In our video portion of the games here with Sonic the Hedgehog,
00:54:26concentration is gonna be
00:54:28the critical element, guys. Dude, step by
00:54:30step. I could watch that show any day of the
00:54:32week.
00:54:38Hayley Johnson's no good
00:54:40at Sonic. Pass me the stick.
00:54:42You know the Lamberts
00:54:44and the Fosters were all playing
00:54:46Sonic the Hedgehog. Oh, dude, they were all
00:54:48gamers. Oh, yeah.
00:54:52But he's the type, Cody, to have never
00:54:54played before, but then he just picks up
00:54:56the stick and he breaks the, like, world record.
00:54:58Dudezy!
00:55:00I'm totally
00:55:02good at Sonic!
00:55:04After this episode, I might have to bust out
00:55:06the Switch and just...
00:55:08No, matter of fact, I still
00:55:10have my Sega console
00:55:12stored away.
00:55:14I don't know how I'm gonna hook it up to my
00:55:16flat screen, but...
00:55:18You might need one of them HDMI cables.
00:55:20Yeah.
00:55:22See, it's so weird to watch somebody
00:55:24fail at, like, the first few levels of Sonic.
00:55:26Yeah, it's like, come on.
00:55:28Pass it to Brittany Murphy!
00:55:30She's a Sonic savant.
00:55:32Nah, man, you gotta have the...
00:55:34Matthew Lawrence!
00:55:36You gotta have Jack Hunter play.
00:55:38Yeah.
00:55:40Major Dad.
00:55:42Is she important enough to be playing Sonic? Nah.
00:55:44No, but you know what's important?
00:55:46That snapback, dude. Look at that
00:55:48Sonic snapback.
00:55:50And you know there's gotta be, like, somebody out there
00:55:52who buys this memorabilia,
00:55:54and they'll probably be like, how do I get
00:55:56this promotional Sonic hat?
00:55:58Right.
00:56:04Gotta love that stereotype.
00:56:06Yeah, but he's missing every coin!
00:56:08What's that?
00:56:10Oh, the stereotype. If you have your hat on
00:56:12backwards, you've meant business.
00:56:14Oh, yeah, you're gaming.
00:56:16Dude, spin down...
00:56:18Come on!
00:56:22These kids are no good, Joe.
00:56:24No, they need to do
00:56:26better than this.
00:56:28Where are you going?
00:56:32Get in the stance! And power!
00:56:34I know, just...
00:56:36Look, Zach just took the stick from him.
00:56:38I'll show you, kid.
00:56:40I've been playing Sonic for four years.
00:56:42What do you think he was skipping out on classes
00:56:44at Bayside to do?
00:56:46Yeah.
00:56:48Dude, he looks like he's mesmerized.
00:56:52Did you hear the announcer?
00:56:54They've been watching Michael Jordan.
00:56:56What?
00:56:58What does Michael Jordan have to do with playing Sonic?
00:57:00Nothing at all.
00:57:02Joey Lawrence, dude.
00:57:04He's a gamer. Extraordinaire.
00:57:06Follow his Twitch.
00:57:10You know how dangerous it would have been
00:57:12if back in the day there was a Twitch channel
00:57:14and it was hosted by Mark-Paul Gosler?
00:57:16Oh, gosh, dude.
00:57:18That'd be gangbusters, huh?
00:57:22How many...
00:57:24What is it, bits or something that you can donate?
00:57:26How many bits did you just donate to Mark-Paul?
00:57:28He's rich enough!
00:57:30Oh, he read my message!
00:57:34Dude, I love this game.
00:57:36You know me.
00:57:38I'm just a sucker for the old-school side-scrollers, man.
00:57:40I just love it.
00:57:42So you told me you wanted to see a little Nick Arcade, right?
00:57:44Yeah, what was the name of the host again?
00:57:46He was in the...
00:57:48Star Kids episode?
00:57:50That would be Phil Moore,
00:57:52and Phil Moore has two more celebrities for us,
00:57:54and one of them is Melissa Jodehart,
00:57:56and then the other one is the kid
00:57:58who played Ferguson on Clarissa Explains It All.
00:58:00Oh.
00:58:04Oh, here we go, dude.
00:58:06Let's go.
00:58:08The music on this show is highly underrated.
00:58:10Yeah.
00:58:12Dude, I like this show a lot.
00:58:16Have you ever actually played with the technology
00:58:18that they did the final battles with on the show?
00:58:20No.
00:58:22So when I was younger,
00:58:24we went out to Seattle,
00:58:26and they had that green-screen gaming technology.
00:58:28Yeah?
00:58:30But it was so hard.
00:58:32You couldn't register a lot of touches,
00:58:34so when you yell at the kids on the show
00:58:36for not knowing where they're going
00:58:38or not hitting something properly,
00:58:40you can be touching or thinking you're making contact
00:58:42and not actually register a response.
00:58:44Ah, right, right. Okay.
00:58:46And one of the things I remember
00:58:48was there was a game
00:58:50where I think you played against Sean Kemp
00:58:52at the time.
00:58:54Like the real Sean Kemp, or just in the game?
00:58:56It was like a virtual Sean Kemp.
00:58:58And you'd shoot a basket,
00:59:00and, God, you try to register a motion,
00:59:02and you couldn't get any kind of action going.
00:59:04And I remember thinking,
00:59:06this sucks.
00:59:08Right.
00:59:10So with this round that they're doing,
00:59:12she has to get or higher the score
00:59:14that he wrote down on the board, right?
00:59:16Yes.
00:59:1825 rings.
00:59:20Yeah, it's going to be how many rings can you get.
00:59:2225 rings is nothing.
00:59:24No, you get that in the first 20 seconds.
00:59:26But again, she's probably not a gamer
00:59:28and doesn't really even understand the controls.
00:59:30Look.
00:59:32And she's done
00:59:34because she doesn't know how to spin out.
00:59:36Yeah, because that was something they introduced
00:59:38into the second game.
00:59:40So maybe she's familiar with the first one
00:59:42and she remembered you have to gain speed,
00:59:44but it ain't explaining.
00:59:46You actually hold down and do it.
00:59:48So we saw a bunch of the 90s teens
00:59:50fail at Sonic the Hedgehog,
00:59:52but maybe a more modern gamer
00:59:54understands how Sonic the Hedgehog
00:59:56is actually supposed to work.
00:59:58A man that we all kind of like to make fun of,
01:00:00but also made some of the best
01:00:02rap music I've ever heard,
01:00:04Mr. Kanye West.
01:00:06This is my son's favorite character
01:00:08at Sonic.
01:00:10Oh, really?
01:00:12Now, he could gain 25 coins pretty easily.
01:00:14Oh, yeah.
01:00:16Ferguson should have had Kanye on his team.
01:00:20Ferguson? Nah, I think
01:00:22Kanye would rather hang out with Melissa Joan Hart.
01:00:24Right.
01:00:26What a cheap-ass chair, though.
01:00:28Yeah.
01:00:30But dude, that's a dope setup.
01:00:32It's like right
01:00:34into the wall, man.
01:00:36Oh, crap. Kanye versus
01:00:38Robotnik. Round one.
01:00:40Fight.
01:00:42Like, everybody always makes it seem like
01:00:44Kanye is constantly grumpy and mad,
01:00:46but he seems in pure bliss right now.
01:00:48I was gonna say, this is like
01:00:50the happiest he's probably been
01:00:52since his children were born.
01:00:56So,
01:00:58do you wanna, like, make a beat?
01:01:00Nope.
01:01:02Let's just play this, dude.
01:01:04I'm in. Got him.
01:01:08Couldn't think I'd beat him because I was out of rigs.
01:01:10And then all the
01:01:12bunnies come out.
01:01:14Sonic loved rescuing the bunnies.
01:01:16Now, isn't that amazing? It's like
01:01:18they have those articles.
01:01:20They're just like us.
01:01:22Well, in that case, I would've said the same thing.
01:01:24You celebrate the small victories
01:01:26in a video game.
01:01:28Oh, dude, always. You find happiness
01:01:30anywhere you can get it.
01:01:32Even if it comes in small quantities.
01:01:34Do you think Kanye West ever thought,
01:01:36hey, what does Sonic the Hedgehog
01:01:38look like if he was a human?
01:01:40Dude, I don't even wanna think about that.
01:01:42This image that you're showing me
01:01:44is just...
01:01:46It almost looks like Hawk from Cobra Kai.
01:01:50Why does he have a belly shirt?
01:01:52Why, when they thought of Sonic the Hedgehog
01:01:54as a human, they thought
01:01:56Sonic as a human would totally wear
01:01:58a belly shirt.
01:02:00With a belt, and he has on white gloves.
01:02:02But his hair
01:02:04looks pretty sweet, man.
01:02:06Yeah, but he's got the face of
01:02:08a 40-year-old New York man.
01:02:10Yeah, but he's only actually
01:02:1211.
01:02:14Yeah, they're not wrong. The strangest Sonic story
01:02:16ever told.
01:02:18Do you believe? I don't want to.
01:02:20No, I don't. This is just
01:02:22nightmare-inducing.
01:02:24So it wasn't just us
01:02:26who loved Sonic, the ladies loved him too.
01:02:28Dude, the girls
01:02:30loved them some Sonic the Hedgehog.
01:02:32And who can blame them? He's a cool guy.
01:02:34He's got attitude.
01:02:36And that's why they invited him to Toys R Us openings.
01:02:38Dude, is that Lamb Chops
01:02:40with him?
01:02:42Yep, and they've got biker mice from Mars.
01:02:44Yeah, I was gonna say, who's that guy?
01:02:46He's got Peach. I didn't know
01:02:48Geoffrey the Giraffe had a family.
01:02:50I think there's Gigi and
01:02:52Baby G?
01:02:54Yeah, dude, he's
01:02:56got a whole family. Come on now, you didn't know that?
01:02:58No, and that's a
01:03:00fat-bellied Sonic.
01:03:02Yeah, they
01:03:04imported that costume from Japan.
01:03:06And either the shadows
01:03:08are hitting him too hard on this picture, or he has
01:03:10hairy forearms.
01:03:12Yeah, I think the hair's starting
01:03:14to come out of the suit.
01:03:16There's something a little off about that Lamb Chop too.
01:03:18Yeah, it looks like it
01:03:20but it's made to look like the
01:03:22actual puppet, so it looks just like it.
01:03:24Dude, Getty Images.
01:03:26Okay, what event was
01:03:28this from?
01:03:30It had to be some
01:03:32Sonic press event.
01:03:34I mean, does it get more 90s
01:03:36than JTT in a denim vest
01:03:38hanging around
01:03:40fat-bellied tails?
01:03:42Dude, that is
01:03:44that picture right there. If anybody came
01:03:46down from outer space
01:03:48or from somewhere
01:03:50in the future, and they were like,
01:03:52what were the 90s like? I would show them this
01:03:54picture on my phone.
01:03:56It wasn't even a professional photo.
01:03:58They're in the Christmas aisle.
01:04:00Yeah, somebody's mom
01:04:02snapped that and then did the whole
01:04:04click, click, click, click.
01:04:06Click, click, click, click.
01:04:08Ah, dude, it's
01:04:10Sonic with the man,
01:04:12the king of pop, the guy that he was based off
01:04:14of, I guess.
01:04:16Ho, ho, ho,
01:04:18ho, ho.
01:04:20He's just so thrilled to have Michael there.
01:04:22Well, if you
01:04:24remember in the games, if you would leave Sonic
01:04:26idle long enough, he would
01:04:28do, like, Michael Jackson moves.
01:04:30And he'd tap his watch
01:04:32to let you know that he's waiting.
01:04:34He's waiting on you. Come on.
01:04:36Now, look at, get the cow toy,
01:04:38stuffed animals there,
01:04:40their little standy display,
01:04:42and Michael gets to play the game.
01:04:44Dude. Wait,
01:04:46so isn't there some story about how
01:04:48Michael was responsible for
01:04:50some of the, like, soundtrack? Is that
01:04:52true? So he was originally commissioned
01:04:54to make the music for
01:04:56Sonic 3.
01:04:58And then right at the very
01:05:00midpoint, he got, like,
01:05:02all those allegations and everything.
01:05:04So then
01:05:06all his pre-recorded work
01:05:08supposedly got
01:05:10tossed.
01:05:12But what happened from there
01:05:14is it
01:05:16kinda got used or reworked.
01:05:18And then people started matching up.
01:05:20Like, if you hear this song from
01:05:22his history album, or you hear this
01:05:24song from Invincible,
01:05:26it's this subsection that you hear in this
01:05:28part in the original Sonic 3.
01:05:30And then Sonic 3
01:05:32for a while got pulled from all those, like,
01:05:3430-pack re-releases because
01:05:36then people were like, oh, shoot.
01:05:38Who does own different parts of the soundtrack?
01:05:40We can't legally sell this
01:05:42part if we're using these tracks,
01:05:44which may or may not still be original
01:05:46Michael Jackson compositions.
01:05:48So, dude, it got messy, huh?
01:05:50Everything
01:05:52about Michael Jackson got messy.
01:05:54So you have to be a little bit more child-
01:05:56friendly, and
01:05:58you can't use somebody with an image
01:06:00like Michael Jackson.
01:06:02What big pop star would you use instead
01:06:04from the 90s?
01:06:06Vanilla Ice.
01:06:08Well, close. They also were making
01:06:10hits in the very beginning of the 90s.
01:06:12MC Hammer.
01:06:14No, you gotta think bigger.
01:06:16Boys to Men.
01:06:18Even bigger. They were men
01:06:20alright.
01:06:22New Kids on the Block.
01:06:24I think you meant to say Right Said Fred.
01:06:26No.
01:06:28I did not.
01:06:30Stop! Not you.
01:06:32Sonic 3!
01:06:34How bizarre is it that here we are
01:06:36in 2022 and Drake
01:06:38sampled Right Said Fred's
01:06:40biggest hit for his album?
01:06:42That's because Right Said Fred was
01:06:44big enough to sell Sonic.
01:06:46So Drake, I mean, that's not even the same
01:06:48league as Sonic.
01:06:50Right.
01:06:52So this is Sonic 3?
01:06:54Yup.
01:06:56Dude.
01:06:58I like the beats though.
01:07:00I'm into that. I like it.
01:07:02It even got so 90s
01:07:04that did you know Sonic the Hedgehog
01:07:06had a rave CD?
01:07:08A rave CD?
01:07:10Yeah. Like Eurodance.
01:07:12Like that
01:07:14Trance House.
01:07:16The kind of stuff that you would get. Happy hardcore
01:07:18that you would find when you download off LimeWire
01:07:20and it's so just
01:07:22in your face.
01:07:24It's so peppy.
01:07:26You're gonna have to hear it in a second.
01:07:28I need it.
01:07:42So when you get that big
01:07:44you get invited to Ronald McDonald's birthday party
01:07:46because, you know, you're already selling stuff for him
01:07:48in France.
01:07:50Is that Barbie?
01:07:53Are those the
01:07:55Berenstain Bears?
01:07:57It's the Avengers and McDonald's toys.
01:07:59I still got that.
01:08:01That's Kermit
01:08:03and Miss Piggy.
01:08:05And E.T.?
01:08:07Dude.
01:08:09Sonic's there.
01:08:11Oh, look! It's Bugs and Lola.
01:08:13Babs
01:08:15and Buster Bunny.
01:08:17Because you get it.
01:08:19I mean, you know, you gotta have the kid
01:08:21version of it.
01:08:23So you gotta sell a whole other set of Toons.
01:08:25Yeah, I just thought it was them
01:08:27as young bunnies.
01:08:29But it's not. They're just different people.
01:08:31No.
01:08:33As you remember from Looney Toons,
01:08:35Acme U,
01:08:37they were teachers to help the next
01:08:39generation of Toons.
01:08:41I don't remember that, Joe,
01:08:43but now I do. Thank you.
01:08:45March 2022.
01:08:47It is, because I don't know a lot.
01:08:49And the last thing that
01:08:51basically cemented that Sonic was here
01:08:53to stay was when he was part
01:08:55of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
01:08:57But it didn't go so well
01:08:59his first year.
01:09:01No, I remember this. What was the first year
01:09:03he was a part of the parade?
01:09:0593.
01:09:07Dude.
01:09:11Oh, gosh.
01:09:13Dude, these winds are just tearing these
01:09:15things apart.
01:09:17Not Garfield.
01:09:19No.
01:09:21Look out, look out, look out!
01:09:25So she knows that people were there
01:09:27for like, oh, it could go wrong.
01:09:29Ooh, I gotta pee if it sucks.
01:09:31Let's have some beers and go watch the parade.
01:09:33Hopefully something will pop.
01:09:35You don't even have to be, like, a jaded adult.
01:09:37There's a kidney here that I definitely
01:09:39know is an anarchist.
01:09:41Oh, dude.
01:09:43No!
01:09:45Not Nesquik Bunny!
01:09:47Is that Peter
01:09:49Cottontail?
01:09:51So my parents actually
01:09:53did the 98 one for Big Bird.
01:09:55Did they?
01:09:59Dude,
01:10:01the Dr. Seuss hats, let's go!
01:10:03Oh, look at that jacket,
01:10:05dude!
01:10:07Look at our little anarchist here.
01:10:09Sister, no, I don't want to see anything
01:10:11have any harm happen to it,
01:10:13little brother.
01:10:17A good fart noise?
01:10:19What is he saying?
01:10:23Uh, let's see.
01:10:25Let's rewind the tape here.
01:10:31I think he said pop,
01:10:33but you might be right with fart.
01:10:35Make a good fart noise.
01:10:41You might be right.
01:10:43I think it was fart noise.
01:10:45But hey,
01:10:47like any good player,
01:10:49you have your bounce back year.
01:10:5194, no incidents.
01:10:57Oh, damn, dude,
01:10:59he's massive!
01:11:01Massive!
01:11:03They call him Sonic,
01:11:05because he is way off the ground.
01:11:07He weighs probably 300 pounds.
01:11:09Dude,
01:11:11so does Shaq.
01:11:13Has Sonic been a part of the parade
01:11:15every year since?
01:11:17No,
01:11:19I think he's kind of faded in and out.
01:11:21Is that going to change now
01:11:23with the new films, do you think?
01:11:25Yeah.
01:11:27Well, you know how you watch the parade
01:11:29and they're like,
01:11:31this is Garfield's 32nd appearance
01:11:33at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
01:11:35And then you have all the other people
01:11:37at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
01:11:39And then you have other ones where it's like,
01:11:41this is the Pets.com mascot,
01:11:43his first appearance
01:11:45in five years
01:11:47in a new design.
01:11:49Dude, I don't care how old I get,
01:11:51I'll always watch this.
01:11:55I don't know that I could actually
01:11:57go to it, though.
01:11:59No, I was told it was blisteringly cold out
01:12:01and that you spent a lot of time
01:12:03waiting for specific instructions.
01:12:05Yeah, seems like it'd be a lot.
01:12:07So that's some of the earliest Sonic
01:12:09the Hedgehog memories. A lot of growing pains,
01:12:11a lot of weirdness right there.
01:12:13But you know what?
01:12:15Sonic is an institution.
01:12:17Yeah, dude, Sonic will always be
01:12:19part of my life. I don't care how
01:12:21old I get, I'll always go back
01:12:23and enjoy those games.
01:12:25I'll always once in a while
01:12:27watch the old cartoons, and I'm definitely
01:12:29going to see the new movie
01:12:31because I liked the first one a lot.
01:12:33I didn't care what anybody said.
01:12:35I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to this one.
01:12:37What about you?
01:12:39Oh, I think I have to see this movie.
01:12:41But what I really want is the promotional standee
01:12:43where it's the plane that's based
01:12:45off one of the final levels of Sonic 2.
01:12:47I don't know how I'd fit it into
01:12:49the vehicle, but
01:12:51you know, I kind of want it,
01:12:53even though I have no space for it.
01:12:55No, right? Me either, but I might have to
01:12:57take to the air. See if I can find
01:12:59an employee or a manager at like
01:13:01an EMC or a Marcus Theater,
01:13:03whatever we have here,
01:13:05and see if I can't try to pull some strings
01:13:07and score one.
01:13:09Yes, that would be amazing.
01:13:11Because, I mean,
01:13:13if I have these powers, why not
01:13:15use them for good, right?
01:13:17Is that good? Yes!
01:13:19It's good for us. Yes!
01:13:21I've had success just being like,
01:13:23hey, that Tony Romo promotional standee
01:13:25or that Mystery Science Theater reunion special,
01:13:27what are you guys doing with that
01:13:29after the event's over? I don't know.
01:13:31Toss it? Write my name on it?
01:13:33Yeah, here's my name,
01:13:35my number, I'll be back for it, trust me.
01:13:37But it'll just fall apart.
01:13:39I don't care.
01:13:41This thing is crazy. I need it.
01:13:43I have all this other junk.
01:13:45You don't understand, okay?
01:13:47You don't know my life.
01:13:49What's your life? Don't ask questions!
01:13:51They call me Sonic.
01:13:53Well, if they
01:13:55like this video and want to see more,
01:13:57and also, I think we've mentioned
01:13:59four or five other past episodes, what do they do?
01:14:01Please like, comment,
01:14:03and or subscribe, all three,
01:14:05if you're feeling up to it.
01:14:07Just, thank you so much for watching.
01:14:09You know, this is a really cool thing
01:14:11that I get to do with one of my best friends.
01:14:13Every week, we get to hop on camera
01:14:15and on the mic and we get to talk about
01:14:17cool 90s things and then that's all I really have to say.
01:14:19So, see you later!
01:14:21Gotta juice!
