00:00:00In a world where the IT thing is always changing, sometimes you need a tour guide or two to help you find your way to Pop Culture's Paradise.
00:00:07If you find yourself reminiscing or in need of a good recommendation, these two have you covered.
00:00:12And now, here's your hosts, Joey and Jeff!
00:00:20Hi, welcome back to Pop Culture Paradise. My name is Joe.
00:00:24And I'm Jeff.
00:00:26And today, we are going to be talking about Soulja Boy.
00:00:30Specifically, Crank That Soulja Boy.
00:00:33And why are we talking about Soulja Boy?
00:00:35Well, why are we talking about Soulja Boy?
00:00:38Because I think in some weird way, we're uniquely qualified to talk about this,
00:00:42because in 2007, we hopped on the Crank That train,
00:00:46and we actually wrote and recorded Crank That Cowboys,
00:00:51which, fortunately enough, was played in Cowboys Stadium. I have on good word.
00:00:56Yeah, didn't you say it was played at Terrell Owens' birthday party or something?
00:01:00Yup, it was played at his birthday party, Marty B's party—
00:01:03No, not Marty B. Who was it?
00:01:06Marion Barber's party, parking lots while people were tailgating before the game, and even in the game, like in the stadium.
00:01:14And that's just crazy to me, dude. Still to this day, I don't understand it at all.
00:01:20So not only are we going to be talking about Soulja Boy and his influences at the time,
00:01:25but the spinoff subsection of Crank That songs that immediately followed.
00:01:31What can you tell us about that?
00:01:32There legit must have been a million of them,
00:01:35and I'm sure there's a ton that we hadn't even discovered yet.
00:01:38Everything from Crank That Batman to Spider-Man,
00:01:42which is one of the ones that I like. We'll get into that a little bit later here.
00:01:46There was Crank That Robocop, Lion King, Homeless Man, you name it.
00:01:51There was a Crank That for that, and we're going to dive into those today,
00:01:56and we're going to discuss our favorites, ones that we think are actually good,
00:02:01and ones that just did not stand the test of time.
00:02:05I'm super pumped about this.
00:02:07I mean, the thing is, is YouTube at the time was just one of these, like, throw it against the wall.
00:02:13If it sticks, it sticks. But, like, the real talented, like, people weren't all there right now.
00:02:20So this is just amateur hour at its finest.
00:02:23Oh, it was totally amateur hour, and it was just a complete wild, wild west.
00:02:26Anybody that had any type of, like, home recording, good or bad,
00:02:32we'll get into more of the bad, released their own Crank That version.
00:02:36Can you explain what the Soulja Boy craze was all about?
00:02:41It took off like wildfire, man.
00:02:44I remember when I was introduced to the song, my buddy Martise and Jeffro were out in the middle of the street in Westbrook, Maine, doing the dance.
00:02:51I was like, what is this? And back then, it was when Soulja Boy had released and recorded the song himself.
00:02:58So it was pretty rough sounding sonically, like you wouldn't want to listen to it regularly or it would make your ears hurt.
00:03:04Which is kind of what happened with most of these recordings that we also hear that are in that Crank That influences.
00:03:10They are so painful to listen to. Poor recording.
00:03:13What's the name of the software that this beat was made on?
00:03:17Acoustica. Probably.
00:03:20So what happened with this song?
00:03:22It's a crazy story. He had written and recorded the song himself,
00:03:27uploaded it just dozens and dozens of times to, like, LimeWire and BearShare and FrostWire and all those kind of kazaa,
00:03:35like all those, you know, peer-to-peer services that would screw up your computer.
00:03:39But he would label them as all of the top songs that were on the Billboard chart at that specific time.
00:03:45So you would go to download the new Mariah Carey or the new Jay-Z.
00:03:50And guess what? It was Crank That Soulja Boy.
00:03:53And it took off so big that I believe he ended up signing a deal,
00:03:57recut the song, and that's the version that we all know today.
00:04:02And from that storm, a bunch of different dances and versions and spinoffs took place.
00:04:09And you're going to hear some of those right now.
00:04:11You know how people get when they download the wrong thing.
00:04:14They're not going to like the thing that they just got tricked into downloading.
00:04:19Right. How did people just not immediately turn against Soulja Boy when they're like,
00:04:23yo, I wanted the new Jadakiss song.
00:04:25Why am I listening to this guy on his poor mic with a bad beat telling me to crank that?
00:04:32It's Roosevelt in the original version, right?
00:04:35It's RoboCop.
00:04:38It's RoboCop. I believe. Yeah.
00:04:40All of a sudden, when did you notice that suddenly it just took off?
00:04:45Like radio started playing it, clubs started playing it.
00:04:48Well, you see, I never was one of the folks that went to download a different record and got cranked at.
00:04:56Like I said, I heard about it just through my buddies doing the dance out in the street.
00:04:59And that's the part that kind of brought me to it because I was like, I love the dance.
00:05:03Me and my friends, we go out to the clubs, to the beach, we do our thing.
00:05:07And it seems pretty easy to learn.
00:05:10It was it was mostly the dance that got me into the song and it had already hit the streets in a big way.
00:05:16And like I said, I just saw my buddies doing it out in the road.
00:05:19So from there, it was in every club.
00:05:22Everybody was doing the dance and then radio followed suit.
00:05:25And it seemed like every station in our hometown of Portland was spinning it just every hour on the hour.
00:05:32And it was it was it was legitimately a craze.
00:05:36It was nuts on that note, then you've always been the guy who defends Soulja Boy,
00:05:44where I think everybody looking at this would probably say Soulja Boy, he's not a good rapper.
00:05:49The song sucks and it should be left in the dustbin of history.
00:05:54Why do we care about Soulja Boy?
00:05:56And why do you think he was underrated?
00:05:58I think he was underrated, not from a music standpoint.
00:06:01I think it was more underrated from online marketing and social and from a social media standpoint,
00:06:09because remember in 2007, YouTube was still kind of it's like infancy, like it was still like relatively new.
00:06:15It's only what a couple of years old at that point.
00:06:17So for somebody to have the strategy to say, I'm going to specifically do this.
00:06:23I'm going to I'm going to prepare and upload my song under all these different titles and artists
00:06:28and people have to hear my stuff, even if they don't want to.
00:06:31They're going to get familiar with it, even if they don't want to.
00:06:34And chances are a lot of those people liked it.
00:06:37So to me to be able to use YouTube and create a dance because immediately after you heard the song,
00:06:44what did you want to go do? You wanted to go to YouTube.
00:06:47You wanted to watch the video and watch the tutorial on how to do the dance
00:06:50and you wanted to film yourself doing the dance and then upload it onto YouTube.
00:06:54So it was this perfect 360 just kind of approach that was really,
00:07:00if you really, really think about it and you're honest with yourself,
00:07:03Joe, it's kind of the blueprint of everything that's used in music today.
00:07:07And I can say that with full confidence working in radio now.
00:07:11Yeah, because you kind of hear it like, I mean that silento, the Dougie.
00:07:17Yep. And as it's gone on and on these TikTok guys have to be good for 10 to 30 seconds.
00:07:24Yeah, and Soulja Boy at least carried it through a song.
00:07:28Yeah, so it's like I've almost come to the appreciation of what Soulja Boy was able to do
00:07:34and even going into some of these bad crank that's you start realizing he wasn't as lazy as a rapper
00:07:40as you were led to believe and like maybe at the level of competition.
00:07:47He was at he wasn't the good lyricist,
00:07:50but if you were comparing him to the single A double A rappers and just the hometown guys,
00:07:56this guy has the charisma to pull it off right
00:07:59and the flow to actually work with the beat,
00:08:02which many of these other guys do not know they don't and mentally
00:08:07and physically prepare yourself for that
00:08:09because we're about to indulge in what is the crank that phenomenon
00:08:15and I believe you
00:08:16and I are we're going to rank our top five or so
00:08:19and there's going to be a ton that we're going to crap on.
00:08:22So let's uh, let's dive. Let's dive into this.
00:08:26I didn't pull every crank that because like you said you can't you know,
00:08:30these are about 13 years old now.
00:08:32So some now that we don't have P2P services as active as they used to be they've faded off into history.
00:08:40So these are the ones that are from YouTube at that time period.
00:08:43So we're going to get to our very first crank that do you remember a crank that Forrest Gump,
00:08:50you know, I don't but I got a feeling once I hear it.
00:08:53I might I might it might it might hit me.
00:08:56All right. This is what we working with here people.
00:08:59This is 2007 in a nutshell run Forrest Run.
00:09:04That simple is working for me.
00:09:13No, it's not bad so far,
00:09:15but I got a feeling when the kick drum comes in.
00:09:19So we got some good vocal manipulation there.
00:09:36And like you said the sample is working like I kind of dig that.
00:09:40It's just when there when that kick drum comes in when that bass comes in.
00:09:43It's unbearable. It just sounds so bad.
00:09:47That is 128 at its finest right there.
00:09:50If that you think that's 64 it might be it's pretty rough.
00:09:56The sample works good there the lyrics are whack,
00:10:00but you got to look at this in context.
00:10:01Okay, I want to put a quick context over this this on their MySpace or their YouTube whatever it might be
00:10:08but then continually go down the list the playlist to hear their other songs.
00:10:12So this was more of the hook.
00:10:14I gotcha now check out what I really have to offer.
00:10:18So that's that's like the immediate vibe that I get from this now.
00:10:21I want to point out one of these whack lyrics that you just happen to bring up.
00:10:26He says when he sees the money he's going to run Forrest Run.
00:10:31Does that mean when there's an opportunity to get rich?
00:10:36He leaves is he going to run away from the money
00:10:39or is he going to run to the money? Good point.
00:10:44I guess we're going to have to get in touch with well,
00:10:47he didn't put his didn't put his name on this to crank that squad.
00:10:51Yeah, crank that squad.
00:11:09Well, we don't Superman no more.
00:11:16We just spider-man that with that.
00:11:19We're going to get to it, but yeah, there's no there's no reference of Forrest Gump.
00:11:24There's no references of Dan of Bubba shrimp.
00:11:28There's like none of that or even Jenny.
00:11:32It's just he immediately just want to mention Jenny though.
00:11:35No, he does immediately rips off a line from the crank that spider-man
00:11:38which we're going to hear here in a minute,
00:11:40but and that's not the first time actually honestly
00:11:44when I say that rappers are lazier than Soulja Boy.
00:11:48This is a prime example of it.
00:11:51Oh, yeah, like they just steal his stuff.
00:11:54No, they didn't just they didn't just borrow the idea.
00:11:58They looted it. No, absolutely.
00:12:01Yeah, they. All right, pause that real quick.
00:12:26I didn't I didn't catch any lyrics there because they're so muddy.
00:12:29It's so tough to even hear him.
00:12:30It's almost as if this was recorded on if you remember back in the day,
00:12:35Joe, my family had that that Hewlett-Packard computer
00:12:38that had the microphone built into the monitor.
00:12:42Now you couldn't wear headphones with it.
00:12:45You would just have to play it out loud
00:12:47and get the bleed from speakers into the mic
00:12:51and your voice into the mic and there's no EQ.
00:12:54There's no anything like this was just bare bones at the minimum
00:12:58that I can't even understand what they're saying.
00:13:01No, but I did pick up on this, though,
00:13:03and I don't even have it in my nose the first time.
00:13:05I'm pretty sure I heard the duh-duh-duh-duh-duh.
00:13:09I'm loving it. Yeah, OK.
00:13:11Listen to the background.
00:13:20Yeah, yeah, it's in there.
00:13:21It definitely is.
00:13:36There we go.
00:13:37There is your dated reference 2007 running backs your standard 2007 running back.
00:13:44Larry Johnson punchline.
00:13:45I'm probably guilty of using one of those back in my day,
00:13:48That's the Joe Budden influence that we were writing with of reference reference reference.
00:13:53Yeah, they aren't meant to stick around forever.
00:13:55I got a feeling the more and more we preview these tracks,
00:13:58the more I'm going to grow to appreciate
00:14:00than when we did crank that Cowboys reason being is we kept the theme the entire time.
00:14:07It was about one team this I haven't heard one Forrest Gump reference.
00:14:13I've heard him talk about Larry Johnson more than I have Forrest Gump
00:14:16in the verses anyhow.
00:14:32Is this going to be the dance? Is that like?
00:14:46And we saw we and we.
00:14:52Running for the cheese and cheddar Jack in the cold and get my wrist frozen.
00:14:56I'm balling like Kobe. All right, there we go.
00:15:00Balling like Kobe again.
00:15:02That's another sports reference to more sports references
00:15:07than there are about Forrest Gump, the laziest sports reference.
00:15:10Yeah, I mean, I've had I mean, that's about as lazy as you can say.
00:15:15Eight in your back, like Kobe Bryant or 24 in your back or,
00:15:20you know, 24 shots like, you know, it could be anything like that.
00:15:23It's not clever to like you won't make it to 19 like the Patriots.
00:15:28Dude, I don't I think I've had all I could handle of crank that Forrest Gump.
00:15:31All right, I'm going to go a little longer on this one.
00:15:37He's switching the beat. Dude, he is.
00:15:54If you pause that real quick.
00:15:56I think I just heard them use the the Mims
00:15:59synth from This Is Why I'm Hot.
00:16:02I think I did. I hear that.
00:16:04That was the Mims synth. 2007, that was a dope track.
00:16:17Yeah, speaking of copyright.
00:16:20He keeps switching the beat.
00:16:22This would be terrible to play in the club.
00:16:23Everybody be like, I'm doing the what?
00:16:26Yeah, but that is the worst thing you could do is to like,
00:16:31no trick people in the club when you're trying to get up to dance.
00:16:34No, and the subs would just be so distorted.
00:16:38But I'm telling you, man, if they if they clean that up,
00:16:42I would totally use that as a hook because it doesn't say anything about crank that.
00:16:48It's not crank that Forrest Gump.
00:16:50It's just it's almost like they had made this song
00:16:54and then they were like, let's jump on the crank that phase,
00:16:56you know that that craze rather and let's just label our song as that title.
00:17:02Not once did it ever say crank that Forrest Gump.
00:17:05It was just when it comes to the money.
00:17:07We're going to run Forrest Run and the sample worked.
00:17:09Well, it wasn't entirely terrible,
00:17:13but I'd give it maybe like a two out of five.
00:17:16I mean two out of ten, excuse me. Two out of ten.
00:17:20Yeah, two out of ten. All right, so we're going to go on the one out of five scale.
00:17:23Okay, okay. So we'll give it a one then. You're going to give it a one.
00:17:27I'm actually going to give it a two. Has the bones, the sampling works.
00:17:32There were a few parts in there where I felt like, you know, it's on to something.
00:17:37Right. You could totally you could steal this idea and make it better.
00:17:41Yeah, you got to kind of also put yourself in that 2007 mind frame.
00:17:45I mean it to kind of rate it for its time period, right?
00:17:50Number two. Are you ready to get a little religious on us?
00:17:55What? You go to the club to get religious, right?
00:17:59Sure. Crank that Jesus boy. Oh my goodness.
00:18:05What up gang? So here we go. It's about to go down.
00:18:08Okay, could have done without that.
00:18:12He didn't want him to lick the camera.
00:18:15I got some new dance y'all called the Jesus boy.
00:18:17Yeah, Jesus boy. You gotta start in the Old Testament then we left to right.
00:18:22Getting pretty lit in the Mormon Church here.
00:18:25Jesus boy up in this church. Watch me worship.
00:18:28Watch me pray. Watch me crank that Jesus boy then evangelize that.
00:18:32I want me you. He died for you.
00:18:36He died for you. Crank that Jesus boy. Jesus boy up in this church.
00:18:40What does this make you think of?
00:18:43This makes me think of Nick the way this guy's dressed,
00:18:47but at least he's staying on theme. You got you got to give him that right?
00:18:52Yeah, this feels like they went to their church and the church is like crank.
00:18:57That's really cool. And you guys are a church's rappers.
00:19:00Can you do something with like a hundred dollars
00:19:03and the congregation will love it
00:19:06and then 10 years later this guy became NF Christian rapper.
00:19:14Also, I gotta say humble beginning. I said ho.
00:19:19I like that. He died for you. It's messed up.
00:19:24Jesus hung with the sinners and he baptized them hoes.
00:19:28Jeez man. Remember these hats.
00:19:33I had a Boston one.
00:19:37He died for you. He died for you.
00:19:41He died for you. Jesus Christ up in this church.
00:19:46Watch me pray and watch him. What was this filmed on you say?
00:19:49Watch me read his holy word. He died for you.
00:19:51Super VHS camera. He died for you.
00:19:55Ryan. Yeah. We cranking up this Jesus boy all the way around the world.
00:20:02Winner. I knew it.
00:20:06Jesus Christ. He's the man.
00:20:10What's in your soul?
00:20:15The guy on the left is way too into that.
00:20:18Oh, dude, you know, this is his life. He's like guys, guys, seriously.
00:20:21This is my moment. All right.
00:20:24That looks like the guy from Jersey Shore, right?
00:20:27Absolutely. That's Pauly.
00:20:30Pauly coming from humble Christian beginnings.
00:20:33He died for you. He died for you.
00:20:36Have you noticed that nobody can commit to the dance?
00:20:39No, there isn't one. They're just there.
00:20:41They're there on a cross. Jesus boy everywhere.
00:20:45I go. He died for you. He died for you.
00:20:48Where was he? He died for you. He died for you.
00:20:53He's too perfect for this world. Watch me crank and watch him.
00:20:57No joke. There's a camera.
00:21:07Just driving around showing the Bible to nobody.
00:21:16He is committed.
00:21:19You can hear those cars in the background just driving by.
00:21:21They didn't bother to edit it out.
00:21:23They're like, oh, those kids are doing the Crank That Soulja Boy.
00:21:27Yo, we're doing Jesus boy, ma'am. Kids dig that Jesus guy.
00:21:33They do. Dude, I, you know, I gotta say we're halfway through this one.
00:21:38And just for them committing to the theme and doing, you know,
00:21:44a terrible visual to go with it, which kind of adds to the charm.
00:21:48It's so 07 YouTube.
00:21:50Yeah, I gotta say, I gotta say two out of five for crank that Jesus boy.
00:21:54I'm not angry at it.
00:21:55I'm really not out of five. I think you're right.
00:21:58Oh, come to church with me.
00:22:03Like here this face to like, yeah, I said that come to church.
00:22:09There's a chin at the office. What are they working?
00:22:12What are they working at?
00:22:14EMG. Here they are on the cross. Ready?
00:22:23See, that's where the church kid actually comes in handy.
00:22:25You get to have the rec center. And we'll say it's definitely drag it on.
00:22:32Yes. I would have loved to hear a reference about holy water.
00:22:38Unless I missed it, you know, super soaked that super soaked that devil
00:22:44might be the reference right there.
00:22:46But that is so much better. Like they took it done into the holy water.
00:22:52You know, I like filled up it up and then started spraying get a devil costume
00:22:57and I'm going to go with you. That's a two out of five.
00:23:00Yeah, I'm not I'm not completely mad at it.
00:23:03No, and if you want to see more crank that Jesus boy,
00:23:07you know where to look. Yeah, you don't need 15 verses to soldier boy.
00:23:11No, you don't. That's going to dock it down at least half a point.
00:23:15It was almost like look guys, I'm going to get three verses
00:23:17and then you can have whatever's left over. Here they go.
00:23:26But Joe, nobody dressed up as Jesus or the devil.
00:23:33Oh, I would have loved to see some more theatrics.
00:23:36Yeah. Oh, we got outtakes.
00:23:42Nice. Even film the carpet.
00:23:47I was defending the people of shows the recorded and there we go.
00:23:51So our next example is crank that Lion King.
00:23:56I love Lion King. Will you love it after this is played?
00:24:00I got a feeling I won't, but let's hit it.
00:24:12So far, I'm liking the sample being used.
00:24:15I'm in.
00:24:18Lion King.
00:24:28What's my thing?
00:24:33I wish there would have been a visual to be able to see what the dance was.
00:24:38Can you just picture a man dressed up like Boomba?
00:24:41No, shaking it to this.
00:24:45In my fresh white bag, any shorts and your fresh white tea.
00:24:49What does that have to do with Simba?
00:25:00What's the K? I have no idea.
00:25:04Is it their their town, their school, their local?
00:25:08Is the K the Kroger? Are they reppin their grocery store?
00:25:12I don't know, man. I don't know what the Lion King dance looks like.
00:25:16If I did, I'd probably try it.
00:25:20But yeah, this one is not off.
00:25:23Good start with having the sample in there, but it's just been all downhill from there.
00:25:28Right? Like do you see Timon in like his baggy shorts and his white tea?
00:25:34Oh, yeah, of course.
00:25:42He used to what? He used to.
00:25:54We used to lean in force. Now we crank that Lion King.
00:25:57It's like on all fours like them.
00:26:01I have no idea what the hell he's talking about.
00:26:13OK, so at least he's not in the club fighting people.
00:26:20No, no. Rafiki would not approve.
00:26:23No, I see.
00:26:27I'd love to do the Lion King, but how?
00:26:30What is it all over the background?
00:26:35You have that one dude yelling, snap, snap.
00:26:44And it seemed like these tracks were always multiple people like, bro, you're going to get 16 bars till
00:26:50they probably all went in on like buying the even the cheapest equipment.
00:26:54So everybody wanted their little bit of fame, right?
00:26:58And they also like, yo, we got 10 downloads today.
00:27:01Everybody in the hood knows our name.
00:27:05Well, wait, who is it by?
00:27:08Nobody. So, you know, they're lucky.
00:27:13They should have called their group the circle of life.
00:27:17Circle of life, circle of death. I'm giving that a one point five.
00:27:20Definitely the lowest we're going to go is a one, right?
00:27:23So I'm going to give it a one. You can give it a zero or a point five.
00:27:28Man, I'm just going to stick with the one because there was a good there was a good
00:27:33bar, believe it or not. I can't remember it,
00:27:35but it was the way it was the way he tied in the last bar before the hook.
00:27:40And then plus that that would the sample I'm going to give it.
00:27:44I'm going to give it one one out of five.
00:27:46Well, this could be better because it's musically influenced by one of the most talented artists of all time.
00:27:53Michael Jackson by the king of pop himself.
00:27:56We're going to crank that Michael Jackson. I'm really nervous about this one.
00:28:02I want to thank everybody for coming to Neverland. Oh, my God.
00:28:05Is that a Michael Myers mask? What is this? Is that you?
00:28:09A 2007 Christmas?
00:28:18So is this what Chris Tucker was doing on his spare time?
00:28:21I think you're on to something. This is why we don't have a rush hour for.
00:28:27No, no.
00:28:34So this definitely can't be the guy who made the song.
00:28:37No, I think it is. It's young Seth that never land while I'm smoking on some.
00:28:44See, I put my glitter glove on before I start the drill.
00:28:48Smoking on some Thrilla. That was tight.
00:28:52Yeah, but he says it twice if.
00:29:01That bubble's booty. Come on.
00:29:07Bring that hook back.
00:29:11See, that's what Michael Jackson songs are always missing.
00:29:14Talks about tits and ass. Yeah, the way you make me feel.
00:29:20Tits and ass.
00:29:30Did Haxor Jim Duggan show up?
00:29:32I'm just going to make that same joke. I swear to God.
00:29:362.75. T-Boy seven. I'm going to give it.
00:29:39I'm going to give it three stars out of five.
00:29:41I thought it was super clever.
00:29:44I thought it sounded the best out of the, you know,
00:29:47three or four that we've listened to so far.
00:29:49I really like the punchline about bubbles.
00:29:53I love the visual even though it was super low-res, of course,
00:29:57but just for him to have just one shot dancing the whole time
00:30:00and then using all the effects and like Mac's dazzle bedazzle or,
00:30:05you know, whatever I movie.
00:30:08Yeah, I'm going to I'm going to give it a solid.
00:30:11I'm coming out of the live three stars bro for crank that Michael Jackson never land.
00:30:16Okay. Now you did say that it looked like a Michael Myers mask
00:30:19and I did find old Michael.
00:30:22You did not crank that Michael Myers.
00:30:25There is no crank that Michael Myers.
00:30:28This is Michael Jackson song,
00:30:31but Myers felt the need to join in
00:30:34but Michael Myers was already dancing to the song
00:30:37and they were using that mask as Michael Jackson in the this guy this guy.
00:30:44No, this guy's just a he's a big fan of the song.
00:30:46He wanted to he wanted to add his two cents.
00:30:49This is what happens November 2nd.
00:30:53He needs a day to decompress and the next day.
00:30:56He's like, you know, we're getting back to what I do. Normally.
00:30:59He didn't kill time somehow. Is that Jeff row?
00:31:04Let's just make sure to get our stuffed animal dog in the shots.
00:31:08Yeah. And this guy never got a job again.
00:31:16Oh, no. Oh, come on. All right now that's just disrespectful Joe.
00:31:21You know what? We were both big fans of growing up aside from wrestling
00:31:26and the Dallas Cowboys. I'm gonna say we really enjoyed.
00:31:33Cranking that Power Ranger. Yep.
00:31:41That was terrible sampling. Yeah, what was that?
00:31:45It's called the Power Ranger man.
00:31:48Oh, somebody found the instrumental.
00:32:03Oh, you know,
00:32:07when I read a repulsive gets headaches on the show.
00:32:10Yeah, she probably was wearing the power.
00:32:16Jeez, dude. This is the this is as Bruce Prichard was saying.
00:32:19This is the drizzling station right here. Yeah.
00:32:23All right. So this is probably a prime example of what got lost in history.
00:32:28Right. And anything Power Ranger?
00:32:47We just power range. All right.
00:32:51Now makes you wonder what is power ranging that?
00:32:55I would have tried to work in some sort of when you're doing
00:32:59when you're doing your dance. If it's like left right arm back more.
00:33:02Like I would have done something kind of like that.
00:33:04But wow. Yeah, and you could get green like Tommy Oliver.
00:33:08Yep. And Oliver is an easy thing to rhyme.
00:33:13All these haters read with MB like Jason. Is this them?
00:33:17Hold on. Look at this picture from 2004.
00:33:22This was New Year's Day 2004.
00:33:28Myspace.com slash my money for.
00:33:33Thanks. Thank you for the WW part. Because if you had to put that in there,
00:33:35I wouldn't have known where to go, bro. Thank you.
00:33:40I don't dig. All right. This is going to be my first zero out of five
00:33:46because Power Rangers was super promising.
00:33:48We're both big fans for back in the day. I'm going to give that a big fat zero.
00:33:52I'm sorry. I'm sorry,
00:33:54but it's a four, you know, I give it a one out of five.
00:33:58It was just drizzling stage right there.
00:34:01There was there was no way deemable.
00:34:03I just want to know who of their friends were like nah dog.
00:34:08Trust me this this right here. This is fire, bro.
00:34:12Whoever that is. It's probably I blame them longer.
00:34:16This is a dead friendship to let I get out there.
00:34:18I absolutely blame them. We talked about Looney Tunes shirts.
00:34:22Yeah, what about cranking that Road Runner?
00:34:27Oh gosh official. All right. I want you to think this isn't the real.
00:34:33Which way did it go? Was that a super popular thing to say 200 on the dash?
00:34:41It might have been trying to roll Rana.
00:34:49I got to be honest. I like this meet me.
00:34:52Meet me meet me meet me meet me meet me.
00:34:56Meet me.
00:35:13A reference. Let's go.
00:35:16Let's go references.
00:35:24Let's go real fast.
00:35:28I love the crane that Road Runner real fast.
00:35:32Right now Road Runner Road Runner real fast.
00:35:41All right. Yo, so far right here, bro. Let's go.
00:35:45This is a winner. I'm into it. The guy has poise.
00:35:48Yep. The quality of my recording isn't great,
00:35:52but I'm going to say that that was because this is a rip of an old upload as opposed to just poorly recorded.
00:35:58Right? How do I do the dance though?
00:36:02Isn't it? No, that's that's the thing we whatever it is.
00:36:05It's a quick move, but I definitely would have like you said,
00:36:08I would have loved to see some sort of how to do the dance.
00:36:10But then again, we didn't actually have a dance for the crank that Cowboys.
00:36:15It wasn't a dance as it was throwing motion as much as it was Tony Romo in this.
00:36:20Oh, right, but dog this one right here.
00:36:24This is the one so far.
00:36:27Oh, can you keep the momentum up?
00:36:31A year later, still spinning, burning hot paper.
00:36:34You can know me to you know that I'm a certified star.
00:36:37A theater agent. We quit.
00:36:40The day before and crack it on me.
00:36:44Do right here. Go hang your baby back in on a quick show.
00:36:48Now go crack it.
00:36:52Now, let me do it.
00:36:56Let me let me try that roll run a real bad.
00:37:01This is club worthy, right?
00:37:02Roar. Oh, dude, you said it is.
00:37:09It's recorded a lot better than some of the ones we've listened to so far.
00:37:13Now that meet me is a winner.
00:37:15Oh, it's so infectious.
00:37:19I need you now. I mean, I thought that now I'm cranking.
00:37:23Let me ride. Yeah, I think that's over.
00:37:25Run up on the honey's man. Try to try to crank it.
00:37:28But this ain't the running man.
00:37:30Oh, so it's not the running man.
00:37:32No, I just dance.
00:37:34It ain't nothing to do.
00:37:36I can't be at your local party.
00:37:38Roadrunner. Why me?
00:37:39Crank. Hey, look at man.
00:37:41What they do.
00:37:43This is a winner. This is a winner right here.
00:37:47Wait a minute.
00:37:54Is that Elmer Fudd?
00:37:56That's Daffy.
00:38:13How do I do it?
00:38:15Do it on beat till.
00:38:19Yes, brought the hook back one more time for us real fast.
00:38:24Meet me, meet me, meet me.
00:38:27Meet me.
00:38:32So we are going to go over a little bit.
00:38:35I put that a three point seven five out of five.
00:38:39Man, I know there's not a lot of room to go up from from a four,
00:38:45but I'm leaning four stars right now.
00:38:49I just thought I mean, just think if you were able to take these guys
00:38:53and actually record this song legit,
00:38:57dude, I like in that time frame that would have been banging the clubs.
00:39:01I think the only thing holding it back was the quality of the vocals.
00:39:07You know what I mean? But I mean, it's definitely listenable.
00:39:10It's probably right on par with the original soldier boy.
00:39:13Exactly. Exactly. It's it's it's homemade.
00:39:16Can we go two for two? I doubt it.
00:39:20Because it's 2007. The Tide the Simpsons movie came out.
00:39:23Oh, no, you're pink, spider, pink,
00:39:27minor, big, whatever it is.
00:39:30Swing from a web.
00:39:34He's a pig. Look out.
00:39:36Where's this going, Joe? Do the spider.
00:39:40Do the spider. Do the spider.
00:39:43Do the spider. Do the spider.
00:39:45And I'm immediately let down immediately.
00:39:50But you're big.
00:39:56At least I got Homer on beat.
00:39:59It's like if Homer was in the same room as like an alien.
00:40:04Yeah, like weird distortion effect.
00:40:07Yeah, the the crank that's that are coming in so heavy from the left and the right.
00:40:12They're just they're just distorted. They're just so loud.
00:40:17But here's the good thing about a Simpson rap is there's a lot to work with.
00:40:21A lot of references. There's a there better be something about Ralph Wiggum.
00:40:26I got a old school and I call it grandpa Simpson.
00:40:29And she 21 like me. I said it's on the lookout.
00:40:32You can call me Ned Flanders.
00:40:35Oh, I get all close. I get them snitching ass chickens.
00:40:39Yeah, we call him Chief Wiggum and I left any of you don't sit high like March.
00:40:43Your bottom yellow top blue making any bra.
00:40:45I'm convinced this was recorded in Jeff Rose bedroom the same day.
00:40:49He recorded. Come on, girl.
00:40:52Do the dead man, woman, child, or some key?
00:40:55Oh, no, no.
00:41:01He's got like the sample, but there's so roughly worked in.
00:41:06Yeah, it's like the audio file just cuts off.
00:41:10Oh, yeah.
00:41:13Crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank
00:41:43it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it
00:41:51All right, tell me how do you do the spider peg.
00:41:54Somebody like, lift you
00:41:55up and you walk on the ceiling and they help you ..
00:41:57I was gonna say tell me what this is?
00:42:01See, this is what we do with these crank dats.
00:42:03Yeah
00:42:05Crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it, crank it
00:42:12Oh you do yeah
00:42:13yeah this one this one was off the rails from the beginning I understand trying
00:42:18to capitalize on crank that soldier boy and then the craze that was the spider
00:42:22pig scene in the Simpsons movie yeah man that one I'm just gonna give it a I'm
00:42:28gonna give it a one star honestly a one a one out of five one I you know I'm
00:42:33gonna give it a two I thought there were points for the rap was on point and he
00:42:37was trying some stuff and the samples they could have worked they didn't on to
00:42:43our next one and this starts with the ones that you actually did remember
00:42:46getting played in the club this is crank that spider-man now the the funny thing
00:42:54about this one is not only what I get it played in the club but I would try to
00:42:56make it into a whole scene I would sneak a spider-man mask in my back pocket
00:43:01secretly have the DJ play this and I would come out of nowhere and it was the
00:43:09black-and-white spider-man 3 mask right no it was the red mask but I had the
00:43:13the black shirt it was literally a mask out of like a cereal box from when the
00:43:20film came out
00:43:32now does this sound like unsolved mysteries if it was crank that it kind
00:43:37of does it's all hitting me back I totally remember the dance now
00:43:48I ain't trying to save a home the only thing I say the show I don't Superman a
00:43:53bitch I just bought a man oh god I caught up in my way climbing oh dang
00:43:58whoa whoa okay hold on buddy
00:44:11okay so now you just pick it any old superhero he's not sticking to spider-man
00:44:17like somebody should just said hey here spider-man 1 through 3 yeah in there
00:44:22there's like five villains Wolverine yeah see what I'm dancing to this in the
00:44:29club I don't remember any of the verses just this dance on that hope we don't
00:44:34Superman no mo and I learned the dance right from watching this again this is a
00:44:40lot of these haven't had an actual visual that taught us the dance but this
00:44:44one does so to me this looks just like cranking that isn't yeah is there any
00:44:56difference yeah well you're doing the web shooters with your hands
00:45:14right be mr. fantastic okay no you're not I'm thinking of like I'd not think
00:45:29of a fantastic for cuz then you think of the thing and then who played the thing
00:45:33you think of Vic Mackey and who wants to think of Vic Mackey during all that move
00:45:39right do your dance on that flow yeah see this is giving me a headache yeah
00:45:46it's recorded really poorly I can't believe I convinced the DJ to spin this
00:45:50for me so many times because it's just so distorted but let me say this it's
00:45:58you even have what you even have the you know Superman part of the soldier boy
00:46:05dance in it and when you come out you do the cross on your neck and then you
00:46:10go into the spider-man web blaster so for some reason that was one that always
00:46:15always stood out to me just cuz I learned the dance and it was one that I
00:46:20could do and I could turn it into a whole theatric I guess 2.75 yeah I'm
00:46:27gonna go I'm gonna go to I'm gonna go to on it it's one that I always remembered
00:46:35you ready to crank that Mario big Mario fan what's my mama what what is that I
00:46:48don't wait I thought we do the Mario change his mind it's this right here
00:47:05no apparently you have to blow you have to have gas if the videos to be yikes
00:47:09dude bitch oh what's
00:47:17it's almost like a rock and roll version or something oh come on there's kids
00:47:23watching this he does not Carol carry pistols all right so we've been told to
00:47:33hit like three different things and if anybody acts up hit the Donkey Kong all
00:47:39right took him a minute to reference a different system yikes
00:47:44they mentioned Sega before they mentioned Nintendo this may be the worst
00:47:54mixed one of the toss up your thumbs down and this is our thumbnail right
00:47:59here this guy didn't do Mario justice and I'm gonna hold a grudge yeah I
00:48:11actually wrote down 2.5 out of 5 what the hell was I smoking on this you must
00:48:16have been listening to this at like 3 in the morning yeah I'm gonna go with the
00:48:20one on this again you get you get your whole crew on the track you want
00:48:26everybody to shine but if you can't make it past the first verse you're not
00:48:31gonna get heard yikes dude I don't know about this no end of that one crank that
00:48:44article okay 50 cent this is by 50 right yeah you remember what 50 cent recorded
00:48:50the article dance I love I love the done done the Jeopardy reworking yeah
00:48:57exactly this is already awesome already way better good palate cleanser right
00:49:11here you have suspenders in the club you need them absolutely need them and
00:49:25like that's the picture this needs a video yeah you know what somebody should
00:49:35have done they should have took that scene when Steve actually does the
00:49:39article dance and mashed it up with this song no when he's up on the rooftop
00:49:46and he's doing the dance you know what I mean absolutely yeah whoa okay no or a
00:49:58Glock I feel like I feel like I'm waiting to like answer a question yeah
00:50:15thinking why is there no mention about Carl why is there no mention about Laura
00:50:19Stefan it wasn't Laura okay okay oh there we go pulling hose a Eddie Eddie
00:50:28pull hose I seem to he did okay but he wasn't like him why didn't they use
00:50:38Oracle saying when it brings back right here then I do that I guess they didn't
00:50:45have the family matters DVD then no either that is I didn't want to hang
00:50:50around watching ABC family and get a clip you see with this one I don't so
00:50:54much mind I don't so much mind the hook because I have the did I do that and
00:50:58that parts catchy and then the you know Jeopardy sample but the rest of it's
00:51:02pretty awful three two one article that's not bad okay they brought topping
00:51:27like I'm Carl they probably should have put this guy first okay I should have
00:51:37put this guy first he probably didn't own the equipment no you know what I
00:51:52noticed about some of these crank that's it's like they're just vulgar is
00:51:55all get out yeah it's like you want to record a regular rap song but then
00:52:00they're like well yeah it's kind of like a who's the guy who does Hannah Montana
00:52:05Hannah Montana Hannah Montana yeah I think that's amigos yeah I'm gonna go
00:52:12one and a half on this one just because that third verse I thought was the best
00:52:16out of the bunch and the other reasons that I said a minute ago yeah all right
00:52:23now we got a sorry ass receiver like Crabtree oh gosh this is our competition
00:52:29this is our sports competition so this is when Crabtree Crabtree was coming
00:52:33into the NFL right this was his draft year 2007 yes no I think he's 0809 okay
00:52:42yeah all right is it this is his college recruitment video it's not bad
00:52:55recording now no it's not this has to be like affiliated with Crabtree right I
00:53:10think this guy probably should have put more highlight videos of Crabtree in
00:53:14there and less him recording it but out of all of them so far is probably
00:53:22recorded the best honestly well yeah Crabtree's paying for it
00:53:41and if you want 35 to 40 catches a season yeah oh that was tight call it
00:53:59mr. Saturday watch him take another bowl that's dope I think we got the idea
00:54:09of that yeah I want to know who is who is hype men are in the background are
00:54:16they are they also rappers or are they just his hype team that's Brian Crabtree
00:54:22Steve Crabtree yeah it's just this guy and his friends dancing backing him up
00:54:27it's Doug Crabtree yeah they all get paid once Crabtree signed that deal so
00:54:35I'm gonna say again this one's definitely recorded the best so far has
00:54:39some pretty decent wordplay honestly but I just I don't know it doesn't
00:54:46necessarily made me really care about Michael Crabtree yeah I'm gonna go I'm
00:54:54gonna go to on this one I'm gonna keep it a solid two now earlier you did
00:54:57mention Robocop let's take a listen to Robocop crank that Robocop let's do it
00:55:09now is this actually Soulja Boy I think that's a picture of Soulja Boy yeah yeah
00:55:16but is this him recording this no so somebody used a Soulja Boy tactic to get
00:55:25their Soulja Boy played the more you know
00:55:32beats not too bad no the beats not terrible but off the
00:55:36bat I kind of hate it well let's give it a minute to breathe here
00:55:55oh they got fans off of myspace video they've got everything going for them
00:56:01don't they yeah they got something going for him all right see another
00:56:09example just there's so much to work with in the Robocop genre but yeah
00:56:15nothing yeah it's like let's just crank that insert the blank but then we're
00:56:22gonna just do our best braggadocious raps right right kind of makes me want
00:56:27to do it crank that time cop you should
00:56:40but the dance is like going that way this way he has a gun in the van and
00:56:52then he's going back to the club which is completely against like the point of
00:56:55Robocop because Robocop was made to stop this type of senseless violence yeah
00:57:02not go to the club shoot somebody and then you know I'll go back yeah and I
00:57:06just go back to dancing like nothing happened one out of five yeah dude I'm
00:57:13gonna give it a one as well all right Roy's here who is who is Roy am I gonna
00:57:19find out wow there's a lot of build-up
00:57:35who's Roy someone went to the yin-yang school of crank dad they did
00:57:50all hail Roy yeah they don't dance they just Roy they could have at least made
00:57:57this about Roy Williams but no it's their friend Roy from school Roy I got
00:58:05something for you you're gonna love it yeah you know that weird thing you
00:58:09always do with the school dances where you're not really dancing yeah we're
00:58:13gonna call it the Roy and we're gonna crank that they don't Superman either a
00:58:19lot of people don't he doesn't Superman nor spider-man nor Batman he just does
00:58:25the Roy yeah you know I like to think that this is a track that Roy's friends
00:58:37made about him but the truth is it's probably a track Roy made about Roy so
00:58:42I'm gonna give it one star really because I gave this to our glorious
00:58:47leader 3.5 Roy Roy Roy Roy Roy Roy Roy Roy Wow 3.5 you must have you must be
00:58:58into it it's a Roy out of five no okay
00:59:03this makes me want to want to tie a rope around my neck and crank it up no
00:59:21offense yourself Roy Roy Roy Roy all hail Roy this ain't Soulja Boy this is
00:59:34Soulja Roy what is Soulja Boy's real name was Roy now you're talking this is how
00:59:43you find somebody then you find Statehouse like 13 years later just be
00:59:46like oh yeah what is he doing he hasn't said anything for 13 years we haven't
00:59:53been able to reach him it's like he's playing hopscotch or something he
01:00:00doesn't eat he doesn't drink he doesn't talk he doesn't watch TV he certainly
01:00:05doesn't dance it's Roy's our last competitor can he beat the reigning
01:00:12champ who at this point I don't even remember it this is I think the reigning
01:00:16champ is the is the Roadrunner right for me anyway yeah yeah and then Batman
01:00:26for me and then Roy no not Roy at all this is crank that homeless man all
01:00:37right all right we'll have this is my will hatcher so this guy actually put
01:00:42his name in the title so that's good I'm gonna be early days of YouTube
01:00:47comedy yeah looks like a Kells Mitchell live video yeah gosh audio so loud
01:01:08compared to the beat and that may be the worst of the bunch look at my feet
01:01:39no I would tip him to I would not tip him but I would give him money to stop
01:01:45right now you know this guy like watch your pillow show and he goes Dave's got
01:01:52a hire me man I'm good yeah oh yeah this is comedy yes this is demo real right
01:01:58yeah I don't know dude it was zero out of five yeah I'm gonna give it a big
01:02:17goose egg as well at least he went as far as to try to have some skits in the
01:02:21beginning and an end and try to tie it together but gosh it's just bad that
01:02:29this looks like that that one dude on YouTube that was like unforgivable
01:02:33unforgivable this video unforgivable unforgivable yeah let me do it it's by
01:02:45comedy myspace.com slash I will ingest rose spray to stop listening to that
01:02:57gosh what tell me Joe in in your opinion what what was that recorded on please
01:03:03tell me a Divx camera yeah had the best rendering for its time period you can
01:03:09upload in 480 whoo he was gonna crush myspace yeah so those were cranked ads
01:03:17we owe Soulja Boy a huge apology and then we also need to run him out of town
01:03:21again just for allowing that to happen you know it's so it's so crazy where
01:03:26look the I don't even know how many 1015 that we just went over here real quick
01:03:31today doesn't even scratch the iceberg of how many there actually are these are
01:03:36ones that we could locate still to this day I don't even know what how many
01:03:41years later geez um but yeah it's it makes you realize okay crank that Soulja
01:03:48Boy is kind of dope I always thought it was but it makes you even as a person
01:03:53that doesn't that doesn't like that kind of music or Thor think oh no that's
01:03:56corny that was just lame stuff back in the day listen to that now after hearing
01:04:01some of the BS that you just listened to now it is leaps and bounds ahead even
01:04:07when I drop crank that at proms and stuff when I DJ they still lose their
01:04:12friggin minds lose their minds it's just it's gonna be one of those timeless
01:04:16tracks you know what I mean and you're telling me that if you were to play
01:04:20crank that homeless man at one of these proms they wouldn't go nuts no I would
01:04:25never get booked again straight up and that has been pop culture paradise as
