00:00:00You knew him as Detective Dan, maybe Ear Boy from all that.
00:00:03My 90's kids know who I'm talking about.
00:00:05Josh Server, from Child Star to Obscurity.
00:00:09But why?
00:00:10We're gonna answer that question right now on Pop Culture Paradise.
00:00:13Let's go!
00:00:13In a world where the IT thing is always changing,
00:00:16sometimes you need a tour guide or two to help you find your way to Pop Culture's Paradise.
00:00:21If you find yourself reminiscing or in need of a good recommendation,
00:00:25these two have you covered.
00:00:26And now, here's your hosts, Joey and Jeff!
00:00:34In the history of Pop Culture, you'll get a celebrity who goes from Child Stardom
00:00:38to Ultra Mega Stardom, like your Britney Spears.
00:00:42But what happens when it's the opposite?
00:00:44Well, that's what happened to Josh Server.
00:00:46Hey everyone, my name is Josh Server.
00:00:51Hey, I'm Josh Server from Nickelodeon's All That.
00:00:55And that's why we're making today's episode.
00:00:57You see that kind of pop, and it's like, people clearly care about him.
00:01:02No, I'm not.
00:01:03Oh, definitely, dude.
00:01:04I mean, you look at those early clips of him right there in the intro of all that.
00:01:08You can tell he just had charisma.
00:01:10He had the cool, bold cut, skater cut.
00:01:14The big baggy clothes, it was so 90's.
00:01:17And he was always committed to the character he was playing.
00:01:20So, you look at him and you think,
00:01:22well, this guy had to make the transition to Adult Stardom.
00:01:25I mean, this kind of talent should be on SNL, like his brother Keenan.
00:01:30Right, and I think Keenan's about to celebrate 20 years on SNL or something like that.
00:01:36So you wonder, why is Keenan celebrating 20 years on SNL,
00:01:40and Josh Server here is doing web series?
00:01:44So weird, man.
00:01:46Dude, he very much has a physical style of comedy.
00:01:51I'm Josh Server. I'm Josh Server.
00:01:54And when I watched him back in the day, I related to him.
00:01:58Like, he was my guy because if I was on that show, he's who I would be.
00:02:02He had my style of comedy.
00:02:04I'm one of the cast members of this show. Haven't you ever seen Ear Boy?
00:02:07He looks so much older in that last little clip right there.
00:02:13You're going in the clink.
00:02:15Well, what would happen is every year, you know, like your SNL,
00:02:19a cast member might age out or they decide, well, we don't really need you anymore.
00:02:25And by the end of the run, Josh Server was the only person still from the original cast.
00:02:31Really? He lasted that long?
00:02:33Six years.
00:02:35So what I was finding is, you know, that takes us from like 1994 all the way to the millennium.
00:02:42Wow.
00:02:43So, you know, you can see him crossing over with celebrities at his time period.
00:02:47And then as he gets older and as we explore today,
00:02:50there's that peak where it's like, wow, he's like the biggest thing.
00:02:53He's all over Nickelodeon.
00:02:55And then you see somebody like Britney Spears.
00:02:57Wow. She just had that hit.
00:02:58Wow. She is having a massive tour.
00:03:00Wow. She's like the biggest thing in the world.
00:03:02And they have this cross, which is what this clip is where, well, here's Britney.
00:03:08And she's talking about, well, Josh Server?
00:03:12Hey, everybody. I'm Britney Spears.
00:03:14And I just want to congratulate all that on our 100th show.
00:03:16Oh, dude, the busted knee.
00:03:17I'm so sorry I couldn't be there.
00:03:19Hey, as we found out, maybe it wasn't in the accident.
00:03:21But hey, you know what made me feel a lot better?
00:03:23Watching my favorite character, Detective Dan.
00:03:27Detective Dan, he was the best.
00:03:29It was the voice, dude. It was so funny.
00:03:32And the fake mustache and the whole suit.
00:03:34So all child stars have to come somewhere, right?
00:03:37Yeah.
00:03:39And I found out from Josh Server's interviews
00:03:42that him and Kel Mitchell actually started from the same place.
00:03:46They were both kid actors from Chicago.
00:03:48Wow. What are the odds of that? That's kind of cool.
00:03:52And then the other thing with him is that it's almost a feeder system at Nickelodeon
00:03:56where if you're already on their radar,
00:03:59they want to find something that fits your talent.
00:04:02So he, before he was on all that,
00:04:05was already on a pilot that didn't get picked up called Scooter.
00:04:09What?
00:04:10Yeah, and I tried to find this thing because we do pilot episodes on this channel.
00:04:14And I guess he's like a boy from outer space.
00:04:18Of course he is, right?
00:04:20It kind of sounded like Alan Strange or Alex Mack
00:04:24or any of those other sci-fi, futuristic comedies they had.
00:04:27Alex Mack was legit.
00:04:29Did you know there's an Alex Mack board game?
00:04:31Really?
00:04:32Yeah.
00:04:33I mean, actually, I'm not surprised by that, but...
00:04:36Well, there's not like other Alex Mack merchandise
00:04:38other than maybe like one of those scholastic novelizations of an episode.
00:04:43And like, it would cost 80 bucks.
00:04:45And if it's not making me turn into a liquid form,
00:04:48I don't know if it's worth that price.
00:04:50If it's not turning me into a Capri Sun, I'm going to pass.
00:04:54It's all just a part of growing up Alex.
00:04:57Hey, check out his shoes.
00:04:59Thanks, girl. I just got them.
00:05:02They got pops, lights in the back, and a pull-out stereo.
00:05:06That is a kid from Chicago that definitely had a Michael Jordan poster in his room.
00:05:09Oh, dude, definitely.
00:05:11It was the poster with the globe behind him.
00:05:14Eight. One year older than Wyatt.
00:05:16That's so cool.
00:05:17So he was already like a child actor,
00:05:20probably doing commercials and different things like that,
00:05:23and then discovered by Nickelodeon.
00:05:25I got the job when I was 13 with Nickelodeon.
00:05:27They knew me because I had done a pilot for Nickelodeon.
00:05:30That's so crazy.
00:05:34What was that pilot?
00:05:35It was a pilot called Scooter.
00:05:37So the pilot when he was younger than 13?
00:05:41Because 13 he said he started with Nickelodeon.
00:05:43And that was when I was like 12.
00:05:45I had done some work for Nickelodeon already.
00:05:47Hello, I'm Josh.
00:05:49And a lot of you out there have been writing us letters and all that,
00:05:51asking us how we became cast members.
00:05:53Dude, see, this is still a dream of mine to this day,
00:05:55to be a famous child actor.
00:05:58It's never too late.
00:05:59I know.
00:06:06The OG.
00:06:08And that's a flex right there, so flex it.
00:06:13Yeah, flex because you're better than trees and garbage.
00:06:15Right.
00:06:18It's so crazy how young they look.
00:06:23And if you hear this,
00:06:25they were writing almost their own material.
00:06:28Can you imagine that?
00:06:2913 to have the responsibility,
00:06:31no, to be in front of a big crowd
00:06:34and make them laugh with like an outline of a script
00:06:38where it's very like Miss Fingerly talks to her students
00:06:41who are doing silly things.
00:06:44All right, kid, figure out what silly thing you're doing.
00:06:49Right, it's almost like come up with one line
00:06:51that's going to be funny and deliberate
00:06:53and then do it again.
00:06:55Oh, by the way, four to five million people may be watching.
00:06:58Yeah.
00:06:59For some reason, I remember that guy on his right
00:07:02from Pete and Pete,
00:07:03I remember him mostly on being on the like slime shows.
00:07:10He seemed like he was always on those.
00:07:13So with Nickelodeon,
00:07:14you actually would get a lot of that crossover,
00:07:18which we will go into a little bit later.
00:07:20The show you're thinking of.
00:07:21And if I feel like it's an episode of figure it out
00:07:24because you're like, boy,
00:07:25it reminds me of that show he used to go on.
00:07:27I'm like Billy, the answer had blank, blank show.
00:07:29He went on where he'd figure.
00:07:32Yep.
00:07:33So the thing that made us think Josh server
00:07:35was like the biggest deal in the world
00:07:37was dude was a physical comedian.
00:07:40Oh, yeah.
00:07:41There wasn't like a thing that it looked like
00:07:43he was afraid to do to get a laugh.
00:07:45No, he was.
00:07:46He was the type that would always
00:07:48as soon as you thought he crossed the line,
00:07:50he would go further.
00:07:51It was almost like you've,
00:07:53you've kind of explained it to me as like,
00:07:55almost like a kid's version of Jim Carrey.
00:07:58And I also found out from listening
00:08:00to a lot of these podcasts,
00:08:01I think Mark Paul Gosler mentioned it
00:08:03on the save by the bell one,
00:08:05where back in the day,
00:08:07there wasn't as many people on these sets
00:08:09that were like legal and like,
00:08:11oh, we can't have you fallen.
00:08:13We can't have you do this done.
00:08:14It was more of a, well, if he wants to,
00:08:17we're not going to stop him.
00:08:18Yes.
00:08:19Nowadays, they'd be like,
00:08:20all right, get the crash pad
00:08:21and get the 50 year old guy
00:08:23who looks like Josh Server.
00:08:24He's got a bowl cut
00:08:25and we're shooting from behind.
00:08:27He'll work.
00:08:29Dude just wants to make people,
00:08:31make people laugh
00:08:32and his career didn't go anywhere.
00:08:34He'll, he'll take the fall for this kid.
00:08:36Yep.
00:08:37I can bring a little bit of that
00:08:39extra energy from that comedy world.
00:08:42There goes the shirt.
00:08:43What does he get?
00:08:44Like some sort of like,
00:08:46okay.
00:08:47Now he's scratching his back on the,
00:08:48on the couch.
00:08:51He just goes all out.
00:08:55And he's down.
00:09:00His bowl cut is rocking on point right now.
00:09:04It is money.
00:09:05Absolute money.
00:09:08And he's down.
00:09:09Did he just,
00:09:10was one of his things
00:09:11he would faint a lot as, as himself?
00:09:14That was a big thing.
00:09:15And the other thing big on Nickelodeon
00:09:16was how often they do things
00:09:18that would humiliate the kids.
00:09:20Like, oh,
00:09:21let's just dump syrup on him for a laugh.
00:09:23Yeah.
00:09:24If they say though,
00:09:25pain is temporary,
00:09:26film is forever.
00:09:27Forever.
00:09:28And he's still sleeping.
00:09:31Why are they doing this?
00:09:34I remember that girl there on the right.
00:09:36She played that.
00:09:37What was the one guy she played?
00:09:40Oh, she played Ross Perot.
00:09:42Yes.
00:09:43So good.
00:09:44I remember that.
00:09:47Uh-oh.
00:09:48He's going bananas.
00:09:49Yep.
00:09:50Oh, look at the monkeys.
00:09:53Oh my God.
00:09:54He's lost it.
00:09:56Dude.
00:09:57Just whooped him up with Billy the Bass.
00:10:01I like how they don't even bother
00:10:02to get connecting hits.
00:10:04Just like, all right,
00:10:05sound effect to cover it up.
00:10:07You know what's funny about this?
00:10:08Like you see him doing all these gags
00:10:10and these bits and it's like,
00:10:12man,
00:10:13he would crush it in a full length film.
00:10:16No?
00:10:17Exactly.
00:10:18And I think at the time period,
00:10:20I think even as a kid,
00:10:21I was like,
00:10:22this seems weird.
00:10:23He's not like in one of these films
00:10:25that Nickelodeon put out.
00:10:26He's like in five minutes overall
00:10:28of the Good Burger movie as Fizz.
00:10:30Yeah.
00:10:32But even then,
00:10:33why does Fizz not have a bigger role?
00:10:38And that's him present day.
00:10:41That's how the kids view him
00:10:43as a 38 year old.
00:10:46It's so crazy
00:10:47because the newer generation of all that,
00:10:51it's like, oh, you're a legend.
00:10:52You're this, you're that.
00:10:53It's like, well, yeah,
00:10:55but they're also just like our age,
00:10:57maybe a little bit older.
00:10:59It's just weird.
00:11:00Wow.
00:11:01What was it like back in the day?
00:11:02Back in the day,
00:11:03I thought that was Wednesday.
00:11:04No, right?
00:11:05That was 1995.
00:11:06The 90s were 10 years ago.
00:11:08Want to redo the math?
00:11:09No, I would not like to redo the math.
00:11:11Nope.
00:11:12I hate math.
00:11:13Matter of fact,
00:11:14as a matter of fact,
00:11:15it's still 2005
00:11:16and I am going to bump
00:11:18my Sean Paul music right now.
00:11:20Yep.
00:11:21Oh, that grandpa stuff.
00:11:23You listen here,
00:11:24you little son of a...
00:11:27We listen to Big Shaq.
00:11:28Yeah, I listen to Shaq Diesel too.
00:11:30Nope.
00:11:31That's not the Shaq I'm talking about.
00:11:33You're just making me angry right now.
00:11:36That's all that's happening.
00:11:39So,
00:11:40when you looked at Josh Server,
00:11:43what comedian did you say
00:11:44he reminded you of?
00:11:46Just like a younger Jim Carrey.
00:11:48He was just super energetic,
00:11:50physical humor,
00:11:52the rolling around on the ground,
00:11:54the funny facial expressions,
00:11:56just, yeah,
00:11:57just that kind of
00:11:58over-the-top Jim Carrey stuff.
00:12:00Do you think you were alone
00:12:01in that thought?
00:12:02Maybe not.
00:12:03What about this post
00:12:04that I found on a website?
00:12:06On Thursday, September 15, 2011,
00:12:09somebody on this blog posted,
00:12:11Josh Server should
00:12:13have been the next Jim Carrey.
00:12:15So clearly I'm not alone in this.
00:12:18You've compared Jim Carrey
00:12:19to Josh Server to me before.
00:12:21But we're here to find out why.
00:12:24Why?
00:12:25Why?
00:12:27Why?
00:12:28Very simple answer.
00:12:30The clues were always there.
00:12:32He just admits that he was
00:12:33stealing from Jim Carrey
00:12:35and that everything he was doing
00:12:36was influenced by Jim Carrey
00:12:38at the time.
00:12:39No, he did not.
00:12:41I guess just steal from the best.
00:12:43Like, I pulled some clips, too,
00:12:45where you watch the reactions
00:12:47and some of the things
00:12:48that he's doing.
00:12:49You're just like,
00:12:50yeah, that's Jim Carrey.
00:12:51Oh, yeah.
00:12:52Oh, Milkman.
00:12:54Oh, that was just basically
00:12:55me stealing Jim Carrey stuff
00:12:57for two years.
00:12:58That's correct.
00:12:59So this was basically
00:13:00just me doing Jim Carrey.
00:13:01There it is.
00:13:02The Milkman.
00:13:04I feel like the whole first season
00:13:05I was just doing
00:13:06a bad Jim Carrey impression
00:13:08before I figured out
00:13:09that I was funny.
00:13:10No, you were inspired.
00:13:11Don't say you were stealing.
00:13:13That's a legal gray area.
00:13:17You've got to think,
00:13:18when I was that young,
00:13:19I didn't put two and two together.
00:13:21He was ripping off
00:13:22quote unquote Jim Carrey.
00:13:24But to me,
00:13:26this is funny as well.
00:13:28Oh, there you go.
00:13:30Perhaps you're the burglar.
00:13:32But I'm kind of like
00:13:33the Jim Carrey-ish guy
00:13:35from all that.
00:13:37He literally did.
00:13:38Liu Sahar.
00:13:40I don't know what he's going to say.
00:13:42You can't defend that.
00:13:45Can we finish the sketch, please?
00:13:49All right, now we're just
00:13:50going to put this bib on
00:13:51so you don't get a shirt off.
00:13:53Yeah, the big facial.
00:13:56I was just changing my car oil
00:13:58and I rolled around in the mud.
00:14:00Open up!
00:14:01I probably stole all his material
00:14:03for the first three or four years,
00:14:05not all that.
00:14:06I think the entire Milkman character
00:14:08was based on just being like
00:14:10and acting like Jim Carrey.
00:14:11Come and get me, you big chicken.
00:14:13I'll be waiting.
00:14:14See you later, Superdude.
00:14:15I've got to go make some more funny milk.
00:14:19Later.
00:14:22How did they not make
00:14:23a Superdude movie?
00:14:24I know!
00:14:25I mean, they made a Cable Guy movie
00:14:27Why didn't he get one?
00:14:33I remember this.
00:14:40You know how like Chris Farley
00:14:41shows up on an episode of All That
00:14:44and he's like cooking with Keaton
00:14:46for the chocolate segment?
00:14:48That's right.
00:14:53I'm really surprised
00:14:54that there wasn't one time
00:14:56where like Jim Carrey comes in
00:14:58and plays his dad.
00:15:00Right, or plays, yeah,
00:15:02like a bigger ear man.
00:15:05You know what I mean?
00:15:06Like you couldn't see a time where
00:15:09alright, maybe they have to promote
00:15:10Ace Ventura 2.
00:15:11Well, you want to go on Nickelodeon
00:15:13and talk to the kids?
00:15:14Well, he already does it
00:15:15for like a Kids' Choice Awards.
00:15:16Why wouldn't he just show up
00:15:18on this show too?
00:15:19I've decided to adopt
00:15:20each and every one of you
00:15:21as my own children!
00:15:23They'd probably give Jim Carrey
00:15:24full reign.
00:15:25The crazy thing about
00:15:26some of those clips
00:15:27that you just showed us
00:15:29is well, yeah,
00:15:31it makes perfect sense now
00:15:32that I would always,
00:15:33like he was a kid's Jim Carrey
00:15:35because one, he admits
00:15:36that he was ripping him off
00:15:38and two, the footage you just played
00:15:41admits that he was just ripping him off
00:15:44from what we saw and heard.
00:15:46But again, when I'm young,
00:15:47I can't put those two things together
00:15:49so I don't know,
00:15:51but dude, you're opening
00:15:52my freaking eyes today, Joe.
00:15:54You know, Josh Server
00:15:55does his comedy.
00:15:56His goes,
00:15:57dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
00:15:58But Jim Carrey's goes,
00:15:59dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
00:16:02It's not the same.
00:16:03It's that little bitty,
00:16:04yeah, the tin, yeah.
00:16:12That's the way theirs goes.
00:16:13Ours goes,
00:16:14dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
00:16:17So, one of the major characters
00:16:19that Josh Server had
00:16:20was Ear Boy.
00:16:22And what was Ear Boy's
00:16:23biggest quality?
00:16:25He could hear well.
00:16:27Well, when you have ears like this,
00:16:29it's hard not to.
00:16:30How could you not, right?
00:16:32Walter Ear Boy
00:16:34His ears are really big
00:16:36Hiya, girls.
00:16:37What's up?
00:16:38Really big.
00:16:42That's how distant ducks.
00:16:43Ew.
00:16:44They just walk away from him.
00:16:46With swag like that,
00:16:47how could they do that?
00:16:49For Walter with huge ears here.
00:16:53There you go.
00:16:54There's the Ross Perot.
00:16:57Oh, God.
00:16:58Ew.
00:17:06Oh, my goodness.
00:17:08Dude, Ear Boy was great.
00:17:10I don't necessarily remember
00:17:12his voice or anything,
00:17:13but I remember Ear Boy
00:17:15and Pizza Face
00:17:16and when they would always
00:17:17be together, right?
00:17:19You know, sometimes
00:17:20you feel like an outcast
00:17:21from society
00:17:22and you think, you know,
00:17:24there's something wrong
00:17:25with my looks
00:17:26and that was what they
00:17:27were playing on.
00:17:28Acne?
00:17:29Well, that's a Pizza Face.
00:17:30Yeah.
00:17:31Some sort of weird...
00:17:33I don't know.
00:17:34If you've got big ears,
00:17:35well, this guy's ears
00:17:36are absurdly huge.
00:17:37And they're just outcasts.
00:17:39Yeah.
00:17:40As great as Ear Boy was,
00:17:42he wasn't the big one.
00:17:43He wasn't the main attraction.
00:17:45We all came to see
00:17:46Detective Dan.
00:17:47Do you really think
00:17:48I pulled Detective Dan clips?
00:17:50I would hope so
00:17:51for a Josh Server episode,
00:17:52damn it.
00:17:53Well, the reason we all thought
00:17:55that Josh Server
00:17:56was the funniest thing
00:17:57in the world
00:17:58was Detective Dan.
00:17:59I remember being
00:18:00on the playground
00:18:01and everybody,
00:18:02to be funny,
00:18:03because they thought
00:18:04repeating lines
00:18:05is how you do comedy,
00:18:06would do a,
00:18:07I'm Detective Dan.
00:18:11And, you know,
00:18:13even then,
00:18:14you have some of the stuff
00:18:15go over your head.
00:18:16So, I don't realize,
00:18:17he's like a Columbo parody
00:18:20Is he?
00:18:21Detective Dan is a,
00:18:22he was a spoof,
00:18:23originally,
00:18:24of kind of like a Dick Tracy.
00:18:26And then I kind of put
00:18:27this like Columbo,
00:18:28you know, like Columbo,
00:18:29that like,
00:18:30you know,
00:18:31he had that like eye
00:18:32and he was always
00:18:33not doing well.
00:18:34He is.
00:18:35He's got the same kind of
00:18:36unkempt French coat.
00:18:38Now,
00:18:39he's not like
00:18:40directly Columbo,
00:18:42but he has that same sort of
00:18:43absent-minded,
00:18:44let me just ask you
00:18:45one more thing.
00:18:46And instead of
00:18:47playing dumb
00:18:48to outsmart the criminal,
00:18:49he's just dumb.
00:18:51So he's more
00:18:52Jim Carrey playing Columbo.
00:18:55Wow.
00:18:56No wonder I was so
00:18:57into the sketch.
00:18:58Right?
00:18:59I will do
00:19:00Detective Dan,
00:19:02fan favorite,
00:19:03love Detective Dan.
00:19:04Yup.
00:19:05I'm Detective Dan.
00:19:07I'm a big fan.
00:19:08I'm Detective Dan.
00:19:11Did he ever solve anything?
00:19:12Did someone call
00:19:13for a detective?
00:19:14No.
00:19:15He got other people arrested.
00:19:17The people who called
00:19:18for help got arrested.
00:19:19Detective Dan,
00:19:20thank heaven you're here.
00:19:21I'm Detective Dan.
00:19:23There's no need to worry, ma'am.
00:19:25Detective Dan is on the case.
00:19:29My hat.
00:19:30Someone's stolen my hat.
00:19:32Yeah, where's your hat?
00:19:34Oh, yeah?
00:19:36Well, if that's really you
00:19:38up in that painting,
00:19:39then what are you
00:19:41doing down here?
00:19:44Yeah.
00:19:45Huh?
00:19:46Yeah.
00:19:47Detective Dan
00:19:48solved nothing.
00:19:49There was no.
00:19:50It was like every other
00:19:51sketch and all that,
00:19:52like Repairman,
00:19:54man, man, man.
00:19:55I love Repairman.
00:19:58None of those people
00:19:59actually did their job
00:20:01properly.
00:20:02He didn't repair
00:20:03a single thing.
00:20:04No.
00:20:05Detective Dan didn't
00:20:06solve any mysteries.
00:20:07Repairman didn't
00:20:08repair anything.
00:20:11Walter the Ear Boy
00:20:12never got any respect.
00:20:13Ross Perot's schemes
00:20:15never worked.
00:20:16All that vital information
00:20:18was not vital or information.
00:20:21No.
00:20:22And Principal Pimpel
00:20:25wasn't ever respected
00:20:26as an authority figure.
00:20:29Oh, man, you're bringing
00:20:30me way back.
00:20:31I've forgotten about
00:20:32a lot of this stuff
00:20:33until just now.
00:20:34This is great.
00:20:35Now, the earlier seasons
00:20:36that people talk about
00:20:37of all that were like
00:20:39very almost adult
00:20:41influenced.
00:20:42They let the kids
00:20:43have their own lines.
00:20:44People in charge
00:20:45must have been
00:20:46very hands off.
00:20:47People point out that
00:20:48the musical acts
00:20:49of that time,
00:20:50they were really
00:20:51hip-hop heavy.
00:20:53They really were.
00:20:55It was like,
00:20:56we're going to see
00:20:57LL Cool J or Naughty by Nature
00:20:58or like Rock Him
00:21:00or something like that.
00:21:01And you're like,
00:21:02wait, what?
00:21:03Yeah, and I definitely
00:21:04remember a special
00:21:06live performance
00:21:07by TLC.
00:21:09Yeah, like those
00:21:10kind of groups, man.
00:21:11Well, it'd be like
00:21:12the most hardcore
00:21:13kind of hip-hop.
00:21:14Well, not hardcore,
00:21:15hardcore,
00:21:16but just like,
00:21:17really?
00:21:18That's the musical act
00:21:19on a kid's show?
00:21:21Yeah, like definitely
00:21:22not kids,
00:21:23like super kid friendly.
00:21:24Oh, you know
00:21:25what the kids love?
00:21:26Tribe Called Quest.
00:21:27Yeah.
00:21:28I mean,
00:21:29I think they actually do.
00:21:30That's actually
00:21:31being more in touch
00:21:32with what kids
00:21:33were sneaking off
00:21:34to listen to.
00:21:35You know what?
00:21:36Kids, don't go chasing
00:21:37waterfalls.
00:21:38Here's TLC.
00:21:40What are they going to do?
00:21:41What are they going to do?
00:21:42Shoop?
00:21:43What's that about?
00:21:44It's better you don't know.
00:21:45They're going to
00:21:46talk about sex.
00:21:47Oh.
00:21:48Whoa, wait a minute now.
00:21:50We're going to have Ice Cube on.
00:21:52Whoa, hold on now.
00:21:54No, Vaseline.
00:21:56Oh, I don't want to know
00:21:58what PRS car goes into.
00:22:00They were sneaking in
00:22:02jokes that,
00:22:03well, like Columbo
00:22:05parodies,
00:22:06and the OJ tribe
00:22:08the OJ trial?
00:22:10No.
00:22:12They wouldn't dare.
00:22:18Channel 106 B News.
00:22:28If the milk fits,
00:22:30you must acquit.
00:22:31Yep.
00:22:32Nice.
00:22:33I like that they're just like,
00:22:34yeah, we're going there.
00:22:35This is exactly a
00:22:37shot-for-shot parody
00:22:39of the verdict of OJ Simpson.
00:22:41That is so interesting
00:22:42that they would do that.
00:22:44Nowadays, it's like,
00:22:45no, we're not doing that.
00:22:46This is a kid's show.
00:22:47I mean, you would get called out
00:22:49by anybody in the world
00:22:50that has a
00:22:51Twitter account.
00:22:52Back then, it was more,
00:22:53are they really going to go
00:22:55through the trouble
00:22:56to write a letter
00:22:57to Nickelodeon, you know?
00:22:58Yeah, and then it's only like,
00:23:00well, the adult in the room
00:23:01will know what they're parodying,
00:23:02and they'll probably appreciate it
00:23:03because they're so burnt out
00:23:05on the other shows on the network
00:23:06that are just so far removed
00:23:08from what they're into
00:23:09that when they see
00:23:10a kind of a clever parody,
00:23:12they'll be like,
00:23:13you know, all that
00:23:14is actually kind of funny.
00:23:16All that kind of is all that.
00:23:18Like, you ever have that thing
00:23:19where your mom or dad
00:23:22or an uncle or somebody else,
00:23:23an older person will be like,
00:23:24yeah, I used to watch
00:23:25that show with you,
00:23:26and, you know,
00:23:27that was really good.
00:23:29Really?
00:23:30You actually liked watching
00:23:31that with me?
00:23:32What?
00:23:33Yeah.
00:23:34That's what this show was.
00:23:35So the other characters
00:23:36Josh Server had,
00:23:37you know,
00:23:38they're just as memorable.
00:23:39Maybe not as memorable
00:23:40as Detective Dan,
00:23:41but come on.
00:23:42These are just as good.
00:23:43Now, I look at acting
00:23:45as far more than just stuff.
00:23:47It's a craft,
00:23:48a discipline to be mastered.
00:23:50Wow.
00:23:51A true professional.
00:23:52So what you're telling me
00:23:53is that you're a vampire.
00:23:54Wait, was this on the show
00:23:55or was that like a real interview?
00:23:57It's a real interview.
00:23:58You always say,
00:23:59okay, do it the first pass.
00:24:00That's a good
00:24:01Jack Nicholson impression.
00:24:02Wait, what was the name
00:24:03of that host?
00:24:05Oh, that's Summer Sanders.
00:24:06I freaking knew it.
00:24:08Former Olympic swimmer.
00:24:10That's cool.
00:24:16See, the reason you think
00:24:17he could be on an SNL
00:24:20is look at how he inhabits
00:24:21these characters
00:24:22that he was playing.
00:24:23Right.
00:24:35Yeah.
00:24:36Oh, he's gonna get canceled.
00:24:41Aw, dude, that's great stuff.
00:24:43Come on.
00:24:46So that's what I loved
00:24:47about Nickelodeon.
00:24:48They just have segments
00:24:49where it's like,
00:24:50oh, this guy's just milking a cow.
00:24:51That's what he's into.
00:24:52Yeah, like after the shoot,
00:24:54he's just hanging out
00:24:55in the studio milking a cow.
00:24:57And then you'd like
00:24:58watch it from home
00:24:59and you wouldn't get
00:25:00that it's absurdity.
00:25:01See, but I guess like
00:25:03he's so, he's so out there.
00:25:04I want to hang with that guy.
00:25:06He does this stuff
00:25:07and I want to hang with a guy
00:25:09who just randomly is milking a cow.
00:25:11Yeah.
00:25:14Oh, here we go.
00:25:18You said you wanted it.
00:25:27What was this character's name?
00:25:29So this was his
00:25:30Tony Little parody
00:25:31of like the gazelle freestyle.
00:25:36Right.
00:25:37See, to me, it was like
00:25:38Ben Stiller in heavyweights
00:25:40kind of thing.
00:25:41Yes.
00:25:43Which would probably be
00:25:44a direct correlation
00:25:45with Kenan being in heavyweights.
00:25:47Yeah.
00:25:49Look at that hair, dude.
00:25:55What?
00:25:57Oh, man.
00:25:59And then there are certain
00:26:00Nickelodeon tropes
00:26:01that were around.
00:26:02Like, you notice
00:26:03how half the time
00:26:04all their sketches,
00:26:05as they pointed out,
00:26:06ended with somebody
00:26:07crashing through something.
00:26:09Always, always.
00:26:11The other thing
00:26:12I noticed with Josh Service,
00:26:13he had a few tropes of his own.
00:26:15Like a lot of times
00:26:17for some reason,
00:26:18his characters would end up
00:26:20electrocuted.
00:26:22What?
00:26:24All right, I need to see this now.
00:26:26Here we go.
00:26:28All right.
00:26:31Who's this little girl with him?
00:26:33I don't know,
00:26:34but she came prepared.
00:26:35Oh, God.
00:26:39I'm alive.
00:26:42You know,
00:26:43I kind of want to write
00:26:44just a nice Nickelodeon sketch
00:26:45where it's like,
00:26:46how do I end it?
00:26:47I'm going to electrocute you.
00:26:49He's going to get electrocuted.
00:26:50I'm going to electrocute you.
00:26:51I'm going to electrocute you.
00:26:52He's going to get electrocuted,
00:26:54and then he's going to faint
00:26:55and fall through a table.
00:26:56And then the other thing
00:26:58with Josh Server,
00:26:59and it's a little weird now
00:27:00looking back at it.
00:27:02Oh, God.
00:27:03Come on.
00:27:04What is it?
00:27:05Well,
00:27:06when you're
00:27:07the same age as them,
00:27:09them doing jokes
00:27:10where suddenly
00:27:11they just rip off their clothes,
00:27:12it's funny, right?
00:27:13But if you're going back
00:27:14and watching that,
00:27:15like your favorite story
00:27:17of me trying to work out
00:27:18and watch The Shield at the gym
00:27:20and being like,
00:27:21what's on my screen?
00:27:22Well,
00:27:23you kind of have this going on
00:27:24because,
00:27:25all right,
00:27:26now I'm just watching a show
00:27:27where a 15-year-old boy
00:27:28rips off his clothes
00:27:29in the name of comedy.
00:27:30Right.
00:27:31And you're like,
00:27:32it's of its time period.
00:27:34Right.
00:27:36Did you ever get embarrassed
00:27:37working on any scenes?
00:27:39Pretty much all of them
00:27:40consistently forever.
00:27:41Yeah, I mean,
00:27:42they were all pretty much
00:27:43to embarrass us, right?
00:27:45Because, you know,
00:27:46sketch comedy is so silly.
00:27:48Well, that was the thing
00:27:49is he was never afraid
00:27:50to go over the top
00:27:51and make a fool of himself.
00:27:52And I think that's why he
00:27:54resonated with so many of us,
00:27:58right?
00:27:59Right.
00:28:03You know how you say
00:28:04you want to be a child star?
00:28:06This is what you'd be living like.
00:28:08You'd be like,
00:28:09oh, dude, I wish.
00:28:10You're all into me.
00:28:11Whatever I do,
00:28:12I'm cool to all these girls.
00:28:14Yeah.
00:28:16Dan,
00:28:17put it back on.
00:28:18I'm touching Sarah's face.
00:28:19She might get the chicken pox.
00:28:21She might not.
00:28:22Chances are she will.
00:28:24When did you last have your underwear?
00:28:25Can you tell me what happened
00:28:26to that girl?
00:28:28Some of them just disappear.
00:28:30Yeah.
00:28:31Actually, you should see
00:28:32the pictures of her now.
00:28:33Don't tell me how to detect him.
00:28:34What the fuck?
00:28:36Where is that?
00:28:38Dude, you could not watch this
00:28:39back at the gym
00:28:40while you're doing cardio.
00:28:41No.
00:28:42They'd be like,
00:28:43you need to leave, pervert.
00:28:45I'm a snowman.
00:28:46It's true.
00:28:47I make men out of snow.
00:28:48So?
00:28:50As you can see,
00:28:51he's not wearing any pants.
00:28:53He's got double boxers on, though.
00:28:55Thank goodness.
00:28:59Hey.
00:29:00You and your drawers, dude.
00:29:02Hey, at least whoever booked the show
00:29:04made sure there's no slit in the front.
00:29:07There's no chance of anything
00:29:08leaving the barnyard.
00:29:10He wasn't afraid to be a fool, man.
00:29:12You gotta respect that.
00:29:14So what, besides the cast members
00:29:16and the sketches,
00:29:17who do you remember the most from all that?
00:29:19I almost said Coolio,
00:29:21but I remember him from Keenan & Kel,
00:29:23the theme song.
00:29:24It starts with C-O.
00:29:26Really?
00:29:27It's a big item.
00:29:30Like it's food.
00:29:31A cow?
00:29:32It's a big piece of food.
00:29:33Corn?
00:29:34The big ear of corn.
00:29:37Wait, why is that a thing?
00:29:39I thought he was just using that
00:29:40to cover himself up.
00:29:41Because the big ear of corn
00:29:43was the big thing from all that.
00:29:45Everybody loved the big ear of corn.
00:29:46The big ear of corn was a celebrity.
00:29:48I don't remember that from the show at all.
00:29:51Maybe you will
00:29:52when I play some of these clips.
00:29:54Here we go.
00:29:55Fire him up.
00:29:57It's the big ear of corn.
00:29:58So what was wrong with the corn?
00:30:00Nothing. It turns out that the big ear of corn
00:30:02wasn't even sick at all.
00:30:03Katrina.
00:30:04Really?
00:30:05Oh.
00:30:06Prepare to have your mind blown.
00:30:07The big ear of corn was a girl
00:30:09all along.
00:30:10Oh, come on.
00:30:13Look at all the baby corns.
00:30:16That was like a real gag on the show.
00:30:18Could you imagine the person
00:30:19who owns all those crops?
00:30:21So after a while,
00:30:22I just went to the doctor
00:30:23and had it removed.
00:30:24How many of those did they sell?
00:30:26What's going on?
00:30:27Wait, does he just have like a bar
00:30:28drinking with a big thing of corn?
00:30:30Man, he has some good times.
00:30:31Yeah, he got a lot of the big ear of corn.
00:30:33Oh, I do.
00:30:34I mean, his friend.
00:30:35Wait a minute.
00:30:36Is Josh the father
00:30:37of all those little corns?
00:30:39Oh, no.
00:30:40Don't say that.
00:30:41That last clip was from
00:30:43all that anniversary special.
00:30:45It was like the 100th episode
00:30:47cast reunion of all the old cast.
00:30:50Really?
00:30:51And then the season 7, season 8,
00:30:52season 9 cast.
00:30:54So they're like,
00:30:55oh, look at this old man, Josh Server,
00:30:57who's probably like 23 in that clip.
00:31:00Yeah, but he just looks so out of place
00:31:02because these are all kid actors
00:31:05and he's, at that point,
00:31:06a grown-ass man.
00:31:07You know what I mean?
00:31:08Right.
00:31:09And it's like,
00:31:10well, you don't see
00:31:11Kenan in that party.
00:31:12Actually, Kenan does show up
00:31:14to be Pierre Escargot
00:31:15in one of the sketches.
00:31:16He better.
00:31:17But at that point,
00:31:18you're like,
00:31:19well, he's already kind of moved on
00:31:20and he's doing us a favor
00:31:21by showing up.
00:31:22Josh was kind of like,
00:31:23oh, he's just still here.
00:31:25Yeah, it was almost like
00:31:27he needs the work.
00:31:29Like, you just actually
00:31:32brought up something cool.
00:31:34You mentioned him and Kenan, right?
00:31:36Mm-hmm.
00:31:37So let's not even talk about
00:31:38how long Kenan's been on SNL.
00:31:41Let's just talk about
00:31:42things that he's been doing
00:31:43as a child actor.
00:31:45Kenan went on to do Mighty Ducks,
00:31:48which was huge.
00:31:50Mm-hmm.
00:31:52And it's like,
00:31:53where were those roles
00:31:55for Josh Server?
00:31:56Why wasn't he landing those roles
00:31:59when he was that young?
00:32:00I don't understand.
00:32:02Like, why was it only all that?
00:32:04You know,
00:32:05it's almost like
00:32:06you look at some of these ones
00:32:07and you're like,
00:32:08well, if he failed a couple times,
00:32:09I could see them being like,
00:32:10all right,
00:32:11maybe this just isn't
00:32:12the road to go down.
00:32:13But there's not even
00:32:14that, like, failure either.
00:32:16It's just sort of a done.
00:32:17No, there was no chance.
00:32:18Yeah.
00:32:19Because Kenan is like,
00:32:20all right, we give him,
00:32:22him and Kel
00:32:23are gonna do Good Burger now
00:32:24and the Kenan and Kel show
00:32:25and then, you know,
00:32:27all right, now they've graduated
00:32:28and they gotta try to float
00:32:30and succeed on their own
00:32:31and then Kenan gets SNL
00:32:33and then that's where him and Kel
00:32:34start having separate careers.
00:32:36Yep.
00:32:37And then you start seeing,
00:32:38all right, well, Kel's doing
00:32:39B movies and things like Ganked
00:32:42and the Kel Mitchell show
00:32:45where he does a bunch
00:32:46of sketch comedy songs.
00:32:48But there's nothing
00:32:49like that for Josh.
00:32:51No, it's so weird, dude.
00:32:53It really is.
00:32:54Like, you think of all the, like,
00:32:56all right, so, I mean,
00:32:58we gotta call all that what it is.
00:33:00It's like a kid's version of SNL.
00:33:02So a lot of those, like,
00:33:04characters on SNL
00:33:05that got really over
00:33:07got their own films.
00:33:08Yes.
00:33:09And you look at all that,
00:33:10Kenan and Kel got their own film
00:33:12for Good Burger.
00:33:15But where in the world
00:33:16were those roles in those films
00:33:17for Josh Server?
00:33:19I don't understand why.
00:33:21This is crazy.
00:33:22When they're making Harriet the Spy,
00:33:24they could go to Detective Dan.
00:33:25Exactly, Harriet the Spy.
00:33:26Detective Dan the movie.
00:33:28Right, immediately after.
00:33:30Just drop it the next year.
00:33:32Like, come on.
00:33:33I would have loved
00:33:34a Detective Dan film.
00:33:36I'm pissed now.
00:33:37Now, we keep mentioning
00:33:38Kenan and Kel as the examples
00:33:40because, well,
00:33:41they were the boys club.
00:33:43They were the boys club
00:33:44of Nickelodeon at that time.
00:33:46But would you say
00:33:47the biggest star to come out
00:33:48of all that was Amanda Bynes?
00:33:50For a while, yes.
00:33:52Right.
00:33:53But when she had
00:33:54her career meltdown,
00:33:56it's gotta be Kenan
00:33:57for his longevity.
00:33:58Right.
00:33:59But, I mean, think.
00:34:00SNL was never,
00:34:02was it ever really supposed
00:34:03to be something
00:34:04that you would stay on forever?
00:34:06Or was that supposed
00:34:07to be your catapult
00:34:08to a film career?
00:34:10Most people say, like,
00:34:12you gotta do five to seven
00:34:14and then you're hanging around
00:34:15too long after.
00:34:16So Kenan's definitely
00:34:17staying around too long.
00:34:18Yeah, he's coming up on 20,
00:34:20but you have to think
00:34:21he's already done TV before SNL.
00:34:24He's already done films
00:34:25before SNL.
00:34:27So it's like,
00:34:28who's to say he needs SNL
00:34:30to catapult him to movies
00:34:31when he's already done
00:34:32successful movies
00:34:33with Disney and Nickelodeon?
00:34:35As a kid.
00:34:36He was Fat Albert.
00:34:38Okay, yep, exactly.
00:34:40We grew up, like,
00:34:41basically brothers and sisters
00:34:43because there's nobody else
00:34:44to really hang out with.
00:34:45So we were kind of forced
00:34:46to hang out with one another.
00:34:47You're making me think a lot.
00:34:49More than I anticipated
00:34:50thinking today.
00:34:54See what I see?
00:34:56I see it.
00:34:57What is it?
00:34:58Oh no.
00:34:59They just have this
00:35:00kind of chemistry together.
00:35:02No, a popcorn shark.
00:35:04Yeah, a popcorn shark.
00:35:12Yeah, more like that.
00:35:17So does anybody
00:35:18just have access to him now?
00:35:20Is that what this is?
00:35:23Because he seems to be doing
00:35:24like real low budget webcasts
00:35:26and podcasts.
00:35:35Like, do you remember me?
00:35:37Do you remember me?
00:35:38Alright, I'll do your thing.
00:35:39Now, I mean,
00:35:41transparency,
00:35:42I tried to reach out to him.
00:35:43Didn't hear a damn thing.
00:35:44So we're either not big enough
00:35:47or he just doesn't care anymore.
00:35:49Or he's a little bit more famous
00:35:51now that he's on All That again.
00:35:57So how many years
00:35:58in between his last episode
00:36:00on his first All That run
00:36:02and his first episode
00:36:04on his most current All That run?
00:36:08Gotta be 19 to 20 years.
00:36:10Golly, that's so crazy.
00:36:30The appeal of these shows
00:36:31was like you could probably
00:36:33recreate this stuff
00:36:34with your friends
00:36:35if you had super access
00:36:37to the VHS camera.
00:36:41Well, I mean, the thing was
00:36:42is like we were doing a lot of
00:36:45silly stuff like this
00:36:46even without the camera.
00:36:50And it was because
00:36:51we were influenced by these guys
00:36:53because they could do it
00:36:54and we could do it.
00:36:55Yeah.
00:36:57Look, that's him as a woman.
00:37:02No reason.
00:37:05Look at the hair.
00:37:07Dude, I gotta say,
00:37:09it's a soft spot for me
00:37:10when he does the old man.
00:37:12He has Terry Bradshaw's hairline.
00:37:15Yeah, or Holland.
00:37:20What?
00:37:21He just went off.
00:37:25You know, I kind of want to be
00:37:26Josh Server's agent
00:37:27to tell him to get on TikTok
00:37:28because I feel like
00:37:29he would crush it.
00:37:30Come on!
00:37:31With all the different characters
00:37:32and skits?
00:37:33Like, you just showed me
00:37:34Jason Marsden on TikTok.
00:37:36Yeah.
00:37:37And he's crushing it.
00:37:38And it's like...
00:37:39It's funny.
00:37:40Yeah, and it's like,
00:37:41well, Jason Marsden
00:37:42kind of falls into the same realm
00:37:43as your Josh Server
00:37:44where, all right,
00:37:45you get the initial people
00:37:46who know you,
00:37:47who'd follow you like us,
00:37:48and we'd find you first,
00:37:50and then suddenly people
00:37:51would be like,
00:37:52wait, this guy's really funny.
00:37:53Oh, yeah,
00:37:54because he's got
00:37:55the comedy background,
00:37:56obviously.
00:37:57So these people
00:37:58were just all over Nickelodeon,
00:37:59which is why I always thought
00:38:00they were more famous
00:38:01than they were
00:38:02because you work for Nickelodeon,
00:38:03you're doing
00:38:04all kinds of promotion
00:38:05for Nickelodeon.
00:38:06So that was always fun.
00:38:07They kept us busy
00:38:08doing a lot of stuff
00:38:09other than that.
00:38:10You know, Good Burger
00:38:11and things like that.
00:38:12Is that Wade Robinson?
00:38:15Yup.
00:38:16It's gotta be.
00:38:21Teaching him how to dance.
00:38:22Look at that ridiculous hat.
00:38:23That is great.
00:38:24In Orlando,
00:38:25and then we moved the show to L.A.
00:38:26Dude, he's hanging out
00:38:27with Nick Lachey.
00:38:28We talk a lot on set.
00:38:29Right?
00:38:30Nickelodeon is proud
00:38:31to present
00:38:32A Better World.
00:38:34Hey, you want to
00:38:35save the planet?
00:38:36Well, who's the best option?
00:38:37Well, we could get
00:38:38Captain Planet,
00:38:39but he's lame.
00:38:40So let's get Josh Terver.
00:38:41You're not the only one.
00:38:42Looks like big helpers
00:38:43all over have been
00:38:44busy greenifying.
00:38:45Such a little
00:38:46Amanda Fines there.
00:38:47It's crazy to me.
00:38:48Looking back at this stuff.
00:38:49Let's count how many trees
00:38:50the kids have planted.
00:38:51Would you wear
00:38:52those green leggings?
00:38:53Okay.
00:38:541,000, 5,000, 9,300.
00:38:55Uh huh.
00:38:56Big help.
00:38:58Get lost, guy.
00:39:01So then also,
00:39:02you have them at
00:39:04the Kids' Choice Awards,
00:39:05where kids make the picks.
00:39:11Of course, right?
00:39:13And you know,
00:39:14they were just raking in
00:39:15the awards, right?
00:39:18So who is that
00:39:19talking right now?
00:39:20The girl?
00:39:21Alicia Reyes.
00:39:22Why don't I remember her at all?
00:39:25Because she was on
00:39:26the first two seasons
00:39:27of all that.
00:39:28And then for some reason,
00:39:29she was gone.
00:39:31What?
00:39:32Why?
00:39:33Oh, you do, do you?
00:39:34I think they age out.
00:39:35They're no longer
00:39:36that important.
00:39:37But she stuck around
00:39:38and she was like
00:39:39doing a show
00:39:40for Playboy.
00:39:41And she's actually
00:39:42pretty hot.
00:39:44Yikes.
00:39:46I actually asked
00:39:47a question to her
00:39:48while I was
00:39:49pulling these episodes.
00:39:50Because in season 4 or 5,
00:39:51there's this cast member
00:39:52who shows up for like
00:39:53three or four episodes
00:39:54I've never seen before.
00:39:55I'm looking through the credits.
00:39:56Who is this girl?
00:39:57I asked her.
00:39:58And she replied
00:39:59and gave me my answer.
00:40:01Nice.
00:40:02So I was like, thanks.
00:40:03Thanks for helping me out.
00:40:04Alicia Reyes.
00:40:15Dude, that's the OG crew
00:40:16right there.
00:40:17That's what I'll always
00:40:18remember.
00:40:19I love it.
00:40:26Who's enjoying
00:40:27this 100th episode?
00:40:28Dude, of course
00:40:29you would drop it.
00:40:31Now was All That
00:40:32always done
00:40:33in front of
00:40:34a live crowd?
00:40:35Yes.
00:40:36A lot of work goes into
00:40:37making an episode of All That.
00:40:38I love that.
00:40:39It's very impressive
00:40:40when they're able to do this
00:40:41in front of a live audience
00:40:42that they're kids.
00:40:43So they have even worse
00:40:44attention spans than adults.
00:40:46Yep.
00:40:47And they're probably just like
00:40:48alright, be silly
00:40:49or I'm just gonna start
00:40:50making a lot of noise.
00:40:51But then I bet
00:40:52Nickelodeon security guards
00:40:53are like
00:40:54stop making noise.
00:40:55Tackle them.
00:40:56Get them out of here.
00:40:57Alright, so with
00:40:58Nickelodeon being at
00:41:00Universal, right?
00:41:02Would they just rotate in
00:41:03a new crowd
00:41:04every couple hours
00:41:05to just continuously
00:41:06tape stuff?
00:41:09You know, I'm not sure
00:41:10with this one.
00:41:11I don't think they would
00:41:12only because each week
00:41:14is just one singular episode.
00:41:18So I believe
00:41:20they had like
00:41:21rehearsal day
00:41:23and if I remember
00:41:24the interviews
00:41:25it was like a Thursday
00:41:26or Friday
00:41:27was like one rundown
00:41:28and then Saturday
00:41:29was when they actually
00:41:30would do the show.
00:41:32Ah, okay.
00:41:33Gotcha.
00:41:34Now, the king of Nickelodeon
00:41:36and the guy who made
00:41:37a lot of these hit shows
00:41:38was Dan Schneider.
00:41:40Yeah, I was just gonna say
00:41:41is that him?
00:41:42Yeah.
00:41:43Controversial.
00:41:44Look into it on other channels.
00:41:45This isn't the place
00:41:46to find out more
00:41:47about Dan Schneider.
00:41:48No, it is not.
00:41:50But he's the guy
00:41:51who helped make all that.
00:41:53Then did Kenan and Kel,
00:41:55The Amanda Show,
00:41:56Drake and Josh
00:41:57and every,
00:41:58and iCarly.
00:42:00iCarly, yeah.
00:42:01Victorious,
00:42:02Sam and Cat,
00:42:03Game Shakers.
00:42:05He's crazy, man.
00:42:07He's like the dude
00:42:08and that's him in this clip.
00:42:10And this is just an example
00:42:12that, well,
00:42:13Josh may not have had his show.
00:42:16He was kind of on
00:42:17every Nick show.
00:42:19Yeah, it was like
00:42:20if you're gonna put him
00:42:21on every show,
00:42:22give him his own show.
00:42:23He can handle the workload,
00:42:25clearly.
00:42:26That's a bowl cut
00:42:27of a champion.
00:42:29Look at the middle part, dude.
00:42:31I wish I could get it
00:42:32to split like that.
00:42:34Dad?
00:42:35You know what's funny
00:42:36is that's how all the girls
00:42:37wear their hair
00:42:38down the middle.
00:42:39Oh, I know.
00:42:40Rules.
00:42:41Guilty as charged.
00:42:42How would they feel
00:42:43if you called them
00:42:44the Josh server?
00:42:45Well, I did a bunch of stuff
00:42:46for Nickelodeon.
00:42:47Hello and welcome
00:42:48to Good Burger,
00:42:49may I take your order, miss?
00:42:53Dude, he climbed the crack.
00:42:54We even tested our guts.
00:42:56Dude, no way.
00:42:59Let me see your working papers, Missy.
00:43:00So was it like,
00:43:01did the cast of the show
00:43:02compete on guts?
00:43:04No.
00:43:05Alex Mack.
00:43:06Hey!
00:43:07No, it was a promo.
00:43:08All right, sweetheart.
00:43:09I'm just trying to get,
00:43:10I'm gonna pay for it.
00:43:11I mean, you have access
00:43:12to the sets when you're down
00:43:13at Universal Studios.
00:43:14I'm just trying to do my job.
00:43:15That'll be 60 cents.
00:43:16See, I only had one bite.
00:43:17How about I give you a dime?
00:43:18I remember Alex Mack.
00:43:19That was like, dude,
00:43:20for a while that was
00:43:21a really popular show.
00:43:23Larissa Olnick was huge.
00:43:26I think she's one of those ones
00:43:27when you talk about
00:43:2890s crushes
00:43:29that like,
00:43:30you could pick as,
00:43:32man, that's one too
00:43:33you gotta throw in my top five
00:43:34or top ten.
00:43:35She's in love with another guy.
00:43:38It's so interesting
00:43:39seeing him go from like,
00:43:41the super young looking kid
00:43:43with the big bowl cut
00:43:45to having this kind of
00:43:46shorter hairstyle.
00:43:48And being a little bit older.
00:43:50Little gelled up,
00:43:51little cooler.
00:43:54These kids,
00:43:55they grow up so fast on TV.
00:43:57They do.
00:43:58And that's the thing,
00:43:59it's like, you know,
00:44:00maybe three, four seasons
00:44:02go by and they don't look
00:44:03anything like they did
00:44:04when they started.
00:44:06I mean, that's just, you know.
00:44:07And then you try to go back
00:44:08when you're way older
00:44:09on Ned's Declassified.
00:44:12And Drake and Josh.
00:44:16Relax, you're gonna be great.
00:44:18Can you cover up
00:44:19that pimple on his chin?
00:44:20It's huge.
00:44:22Aw, jeez.
00:44:23Which a lot of people
00:44:24have told me they've seen.
00:44:25Do you want a donut?
00:44:26It's got sprinkles.
00:44:28Um, sure, thanks.
00:44:29Well, that's kind of cool
00:44:30that he would get called back
00:44:31and, you know,
00:44:32just be able to play
00:44:33random characters
00:44:34and make cameos, right?
00:44:36Well, you can trust him
00:44:37because if you're
00:44:38booking these shows,
00:44:39he's like,
00:44:40oh, I know that kid.
00:44:41That kid's really funny.
00:44:42He's so funny.
00:44:43He'll nail this part
00:44:44because he knows my writing.
00:44:46Yeah.
00:44:47And he, yeah,
00:44:48he knows the style.
00:44:50Like if I say,
00:44:52all right, be over the top.
00:44:53This kid's,
00:44:54I mean,
00:44:55if anyone knows,
00:44:56go over the top.
00:44:57Yeah.
00:44:59Now, the one show
00:45:00that you mentioned
00:45:02that you always saw him
00:45:03and Danny Tamburelli on was...
00:45:07Figure It Out.
00:45:10You figured it out.
00:45:12Yeah.
00:45:13Josh Server was,
00:45:14I want to say
00:45:15in 10 to 15 episodes
00:45:16of Figure It Out,
00:45:18which actually
00:45:19was kind of low
00:45:20from my memory.
00:45:21It was like,
00:45:22he was always on.
00:45:23Yeah.
00:45:24It seemed like it,
00:45:25but not as much
00:45:26as I actually thought.
00:45:28But when he was on,
00:45:30he was so over the top
00:45:31and so memorable
00:45:32that, well,
00:45:33yeah,
00:45:34it makes sense
00:45:35that you would just
00:45:36picture him on the panel.
00:45:38It was like the perfect
00:45:39kind of style show for him
00:45:41because it wasn't
00:45:42sitcom style.
00:45:43But when it came time
00:45:44for the camera
00:45:45to be on him,
00:45:46for him to, you know,
00:45:47do his answer,
00:45:48he could just turn it on
00:45:49and just crush it.
00:45:52The thing with Figure It Out
00:45:53is, like,
00:45:54if the kid is kind of a dud
00:45:56or just doesn't have
00:45:57an on-camera personality,
00:45:58it's really up to the panelists
00:46:00to go over the top
00:46:01with their comedy.
00:46:03Yep.
00:46:04And one of my favorite things
00:46:06in another instance of,
00:46:07wow, they'd never get away
00:46:08with asking these questions,
00:46:10is they call and ask the kid
00:46:12if he's a member
00:46:13of the Communist Party.
00:46:16What?
00:46:17So I did a lot of those,
00:46:18a lot of the,
00:46:19a lot of stuff for Nickelodeon
00:46:21that wasn't all that,
00:46:22you know, Figure It Out.
00:46:23From all of that,
00:46:24Josh Serber.
00:46:26What's up?
00:46:27Dude, Figure It Out
00:46:28was great.
00:46:29Good to see ya.
00:46:31Are you or have you
00:46:32ever been a member
00:46:33of the Communist Party?
00:46:34I remember Michael Malley.
00:46:36Michael Malley's asking
00:46:37this kid if she's a communist
00:46:38and the answer to that
00:46:39goes off like,
00:46:40tell me yes.
00:46:41What do you think
00:46:42has ever happened?
00:46:43Oh my goodness.
00:46:44Oh wait, no,
00:46:45that was a no, right?
00:46:46You're not a communist, kid.
00:46:49Are you Little Pete's
00:46:50personal massage therapist?
00:46:53No, I'm sorry, I'm not.
00:46:54No.
00:46:55Okay, here you go.
00:46:56This is how it works,
00:46:57if she gets in a little circle.
00:46:58See, Pete was always on there.
00:46:59He gets drenched.
00:47:00Come on, bring it on!
00:47:01Bring it on!
00:47:06Aw, dude.
00:47:07The secret solution is
00:47:08looking at Josh.
00:47:10That's so mad, dude.
00:47:12Of course it is.
00:47:14Just has to look at him.
00:47:17It's over for him, dude.
00:47:18It's over for him.
00:47:19There it goes.
00:47:22Figure it out was so great, man.
00:47:24I missed that show.
00:47:27I want that sound
00:47:28to be on my shower.
00:47:29Yeah.
00:47:33Wait, who was the bald guy
00:47:34again on his left?
00:47:36On the left there?
00:47:37That was Kevin.
00:47:39Okay.
00:47:40What was he from?
00:47:42He was the stage manager
00:47:43on all that.
00:47:44Right, okay.
00:47:45And they're all getting...
00:47:46Dude, that's why
00:47:47this show was so great.
00:47:48I might have, like,
00:47:49PTSD about that sound.
00:47:51It's...
00:47:52Yeah.
00:47:53Uh-oh.
00:47:54Have you ever actually
00:47:55been slimed?
00:47:56No.
00:47:57So, up at Santa's Village...
00:47:58I've done, like,
00:48:00paint parties and stuff
00:48:01with, like,
00:48:02buckets and buckets of paint,
00:48:04but never, like,
00:48:05the actual slime.
00:48:06Oh, so we had it
00:48:07at Santa's Village.
00:48:09And there was, like,
00:48:10a little side attraction
00:48:11where they did
00:48:12a kind of a figure-it-out
00:48:13type show.
00:48:14Yeah.
00:48:15And at the very end,
00:48:16they wanted audience volunteers.
00:48:17And they picked me
00:48:18to go up and be slimed.
00:48:19And then as I'm up there,
00:48:20they're like,
00:48:21who do you want
00:48:22to have slime you?
00:48:23And I'm like,
00:48:24oh, fine.
00:48:25My sister can slime me.
00:48:26But I point,
00:48:27and my cousin thinks
00:48:28I pointed at him.
00:48:29So he's bolting
00:48:30towards the stage,
00:48:31like, all right,
00:48:32it's me.
00:48:33I get to slime you.
00:48:34And he gets pulled down.
00:48:35And it's like, no,
00:48:36Chrissy gets to slime him.
00:48:37And you see this look
00:48:38at his face like,
00:48:39I am so mad right now.
00:48:40You have ruined
00:48:41the perfect opportunity
00:48:42for me.
00:48:43Yeah.
00:48:44It's, uh,
00:48:45it's like wet goop,
00:48:46basically.
00:48:47Yeah.
00:48:48Like,
00:48:49you ever do those
00:48:50craft projects?
00:48:51Like Gak or something.
00:48:52Like a wetter,
00:48:53kind of more fluid-y Gak.
00:48:55Is it warm
00:48:56or is it cold?
00:48:57It's cold.
00:48:58Okay.
00:48:59It's got a very
00:49:00jello-y texture
00:49:01if it's the same
00:49:02as what they're using there.
00:49:04Ugh.
00:49:05You know what I,
00:49:06you know,
00:49:07there's one clip
00:49:08that I've seen
00:49:09going around TikTok
00:49:10recently,
00:49:11and I have no idea why.
00:49:12It's Katy Perry
00:49:13at a Nickelodeon
00:49:14kids award show.
00:49:16And she opens up the box
00:49:18to get the name
00:49:19of the person who won.
00:49:21And the slime
00:49:22just shoots out
00:49:24and knocks the wig
00:49:25off her head.
00:49:26It's just
00:49:27the funniest thing.
00:49:29Like, man,
00:49:30they packed a punch
00:49:31on that one.
00:49:33You know,
00:49:34it kind of reminds me
00:49:35of when you're watching
00:49:36the, uh,
00:49:37God, what the heck
00:49:38is that show?
00:49:39Double Dare.
00:49:40And it's like,
00:49:41all right,
00:49:42reach into this giant nose
00:49:43for all the fake boogers
00:49:44and everything else.
00:49:45And like,
00:49:46they're climbing
00:49:47inside of that nose.
00:49:48Great show.
00:49:49They're literally
00:49:50being swallowed up
00:49:51by booger.
00:49:52At a certain point,
00:49:53what happens
00:49:54to every child star?
00:49:55Ah,
00:49:56you age out of that role.
00:49:57You know,
00:49:58it's,
00:49:59you get to a certain age,
00:50:00you start to look
00:50:01a certain way,
00:50:02and it's like,
00:50:03do you transition
00:50:04into different stuff
00:50:05or do you go away
00:50:06for a while
00:50:07and learn,
00:50:08you know,
00:50:09learn a new hold,
00:50:10as Jim Ross would say.
00:50:11Well,
00:50:12the end was starting
00:50:13to feel near
00:50:14for Josh Server
00:50:15when it came to
00:50:16season six.
00:50:17And, um,
00:50:18by the time
00:50:19I was in my 20s,
00:50:20we had done
00:50:21over six seasons,
00:50:22100 plus episodes
00:50:23where I got to
00:50:24bring to life
00:50:25a lot of different characters,
00:50:26all sketch,
00:50:27all fun.
00:50:28In his 20s.
00:50:29So he was in his 20s.
00:50:30He still got to be
00:50:31on all that.
00:50:32Very funny, Josh.
00:50:33See,
00:50:34I don't remember,
00:50:35I remember Amanda Bynes,
00:50:36but I don't remember
00:50:37any of these other kids, dude.
00:50:38Do you?
00:50:39Yes.
00:50:40But at this point,
00:50:41I was aging out as well.
00:50:42Yeah.
00:50:43And I was like,
00:50:44I like my OGs.
00:50:45I only like Josh Server.
00:50:46The rest of these kids suck.
00:50:47Yeah.
00:50:48And that's why
00:50:49they kept showing up
00:50:50and they wanted me to leave
00:50:51but I wouldn't.
00:50:52Josh,
00:50:53cut it out.
00:50:54We're trying to watch
00:50:55Leon eat peanuts.
00:50:56Like you watch these kids
00:50:57and I guess they're
00:50:58probably funny too,
00:50:59the kids who grew up
00:51:00with them.
00:51:01But it was like,
00:51:02no, I don't like them.
00:51:03I don't like these kids.
00:51:04And where were you
00:51:05January 40, 1931?
00:51:06I don't like you.
00:51:07I wasn't born yet.
00:51:08And besides,
00:51:09there's no such thing
00:51:10as January 40.
00:51:11I guess they're funny as well
00:51:12but they're not as funny
00:51:13as my cast members.
00:51:14You know,
00:51:15I feel like the later season
00:51:16Even Josh agrees.
00:51:17felt more comfortable.
00:51:18It's crazy that he was
00:51:19on the show
00:51:20that freaking long, man.
00:51:21As a performer.
00:51:22So I think I enjoyed those.
00:51:23But I definitely still liked
00:51:24when everyone was still there.
00:51:25You know,
00:51:26the later season,
00:51:27some of my older cast mates
00:51:28had gone
00:51:29and I was like,
00:51:30Yeah,
00:51:31they had kind of moved on
00:51:32and he was kind of like
00:51:33the Lone Ranger.
00:51:34Do we really need to be
00:51:35adding more cast members?
00:51:36I mean,
00:51:37she's okay.
00:51:38Yes,
00:51:39this is what I asked.
00:51:40I said,
00:51:41who is this girl,
00:51:42Tricia?
00:51:43Leon and Mark
00:51:44No idea.
00:51:45and Mark and Nick Cannon
00:51:46and Amanda.
00:51:47They were all great.
00:51:48I definitely kind of
00:51:49remember Nick Cannon
00:51:50coming onto the show
00:51:51because I used to be
00:51:52a big Nick Cannon fan
00:51:53way back in the day.
00:51:54where everyone was
00:51:55still together.
00:51:56But here's the one
00:51:57that people don't remember.
00:51:58Yeah,
00:51:59everyone was still together.
00:52:00But here's the one
00:52:01that blew my mind.
00:52:02Gabrielle Iglesias
00:52:03was a cast member.
00:52:04Hey guys,
00:52:05I think Josh really
00:52:06saved his detective dad.
00:52:07Was she really?
00:52:08Not Gabrielle Iglesias.
00:52:09What the heck?
00:52:10The guy who plays Fluffy.
00:52:11The comedian.
00:52:12The big fat guy.
00:52:13No,
00:52:14he was not.
00:52:15Cast member for season six.
00:52:16Yeah.
00:52:17Someone in the room
00:52:18just hit me with this
00:52:19flying pen
00:52:20and I'm going to find out who.
00:52:21Guys,
00:52:22what are we going to do?
00:52:23The show's about to start.
00:52:24Yeah,
00:52:25that's a poopy show.
00:52:26I hate them.
00:52:27So long,
00:52:29see Jimmy Bond.
00:52:30See,
00:52:31like even Jimmy Bond.
00:52:32Alright,
00:52:33now you're just
00:52:34a little too old
00:52:35now to be that character as well.
00:52:36Yeah,
00:52:37it's a little...
00:52:38What?
00:52:39There he is,
00:52:40for real.
00:52:41You eat it.
00:52:42You're just saying that.
00:52:43No,
00:52:44I'm not.
00:52:45You ate my whole fast.
00:52:46What kind of a person
00:52:47eats another person's
00:52:48whole fast?
00:52:49So,
00:52:50how was he in the school?
00:52:51He's just too cool to leave.
00:52:52Yeah.
00:52:53Well,
00:52:54man,
00:52:55he was so good at it
00:52:56for so long.
00:52:57All you kids on the show
00:52:58seem so nice.
00:52:59I don't think he's going to
00:53:00turn back into Josh.
00:53:01So,
00:53:02Kel was still there
00:53:03up until season five,
00:53:04and even then,
00:53:05he was splitting duties.
00:53:06Like,
00:53:07he wasn't even on
00:53:08half the episodes.
00:53:09See,
00:53:10I did it again.
00:53:11Hey, guys.
00:53:12Right.
00:53:13Wait a minute.
00:53:14Detective Dan and Josh
00:53:15are two different people?
00:53:16Don't worry.
00:53:17What?
00:53:18Detective Dan's
00:53:19on the case.
00:53:20Geronimo!
00:53:25Geronimo!
00:53:27Was that, like,
00:53:28one of his catchphrases?
00:53:36No.
00:53:37So,
00:53:38you can tell
00:53:39he's pretty much
00:53:40aging out at this point
00:53:42because I pulled
00:53:43this press conference
00:53:44from, like,
00:53:45one of those news junkets,
00:53:46and,
00:53:47like,
00:53:48his style of humor
00:53:49and just what he thinks
00:53:50is funny
00:53:51is so much different
00:53:52than his cast members
00:53:53who kind of get offended
00:53:54by his jokes
00:53:55and it's like,
00:53:56What?
00:53:57Okay.
00:53:58Fine.
00:53:59I guess
00:54:00he's a little more adult now
00:54:01and that's not cool.
00:54:02Right.
00:54:03Get lost.
00:54:04So,
00:54:05this looks like
00:54:06Kids' Choice Awards 2000.
00:54:13That's not funny.
00:54:14Oh, gosh.
00:54:15That's not funny.
00:54:24Yikes.
00:54:25See?
00:54:26He's just like,
00:54:27pfft.
00:54:28You could tell
00:54:29he's sick of these kids.
00:54:30Like,
00:54:31they're not his pals.
00:54:32No.
00:54:33Like,
00:54:34that's like when you're at a job
00:54:35or someplace too long
00:54:36and all your friends are gone
00:54:37and you're like,
00:54:38I hate all these new people.
00:54:39They all suck.
00:54:40Get lost.
00:54:41Well, dude,
00:54:42it was like,
00:54:43you know,
00:54:44it was like,
00:54:45I don't know.
00:54:46The creators of the show thought,
00:54:47well, damn,
00:54:48we have to have Josh on here still
00:54:49so the show can still be funny.
00:54:50So, we get to the point now,
00:54:51it's time for him to leave.
00:54:52It's over.
00:54:53The party is done.
00:54:54So,
00:54:55instead of becoming like,
00:54:56transitioning into more adult roles,
00:54:57he decides just to leave
00:54:58and become a real estate agent?
00:54:59What?
00:55:00You know,
00:55:01it was like,
00:55:02all right,
00:55:03it's time for you
00:55:04to either leave
00:55:05or become a real estate agent.
00:55:06It was like,
00:55:07all right,
00:55:08it's time for you
00:55:09to either leave
00:55:10or become a real estate agent.
00:55:11It was like,
00:55:12all right,
00:55:13it's time for you
00:55:14to either become
00:55:15the big-time celebrity
00:55:16or find that other thing
00:55:17that you're passionate about.
00:55:18And he even satirizes that
00:55:19in a web series later on
00:55:20where he plays
00:55:21an aging child sitcom star
00:55:22who's in an
00:55:23all-that-type parody show.
00:55:24Really?
00:55:25Yeah.
00:55:26And he makes fun of
00:55:27the very thing
00:55:28that happened to him
00:55:29where he's an older celebrity kid
00:55:30being aged out of a show
00:55:31and being pushed out
00:55:32for a fake
00:55:33kind of Amanda Bynes type.
00:55:34Yeah.
00:55:35But, you know,
00:55:36it was like,
00:55:37all right,
00:55:38it's time for you
00:55:39to either leave
00:55:40or become a real estate agent.
00:55:41It was like,
00:55:42all right,
00:55:43it's time for you
00:55:44to either leave
00:55:45or become a real estate agent.
00:55:46Yup.
00:55:47But then, you know,
00:55:48you have rumors like this
00:55:49that you're seeing right here.
00:55:50He quit the business
00:55:51to become a real estate agent?
00:55:52No, no, no.
00:55:53Well, that's the thing
00:55:54is his kind of
00:55:55after all that casting,
00:55:56I was probably a punk, honestly,
00:55:57when I was younger
00:55:58and on the show.
00:55:59It's tough to figure out
00:56:00what exactly he did
00:56:01because it's very vague
00:56:02even with research.
00:56:03And just a lot
00:56:04of life experiences
00:56:05has tried to keep me humble.
00:56:06I'm glad YouTube
00:56:07didn't exist
00:56:08when we did that.
00:56:09Oh, my God.
00:56:10I will say,
00:56:12like when you're a kid,
00:56:13you can get away with stuff.
00:56:14You can get away
00:56:15with not knowing
00:56:16because they're like,
00:56:17oh, well, he's a kid.
00:56:18He's a teenager or whatever.
00:56:19And now as an adult,
00:56:20you can't show up
00:56:21and make those mistakes.
00:56:22So it does.
00:56:23He's a kid.
00:56:24He doesn't understand.
00:56:25No.
00:56:26I think it prepares you
00:56:27to be a professional, right?
00:56:28Because you have a learning curve
00:56:29when you're young.
00:56:30Sometimes you have to
00:56:31step away from something
00:56:32to understand
00:56:33how good you've got it.
00:56:34Man, I wish,
00:56:35I really wish Cal
00:56:36would have accomplished more.
00:56:37Because it's true
00:56:38what they say.
00:56:39When you're doing
00:56:40what you are passionate about.
00:56:41I like him so much.
00:56:42You never work a day
00:56:43in your life.
00:56:44I remember,
00:56:45I used to do that.
00:56:46So there's a Josh Server
00:56:47Facebook fan page.
00:56:48Clearly, you pulled
00:56:49some of this from.
00:56:50No, it's your guy's show.
00:56:51I couldn't.
00:56:52Come on.
00:56:53Well, I'm not alone
00:56:54in wondering what happened
00:56:55to this guy.
00:56:56Right.
00:56:57He's one of the biggest
00:56:58mysteries of where'd he go.
00:56:59And even in these clips,
00:57:00it's very vague of like,
00:57:01all right, I was gone.
00:57:02Well, how'd you disappear
00:57:03for like five years
00:57:04without doing anything?
00:57:05You're a great artist.
00:57:06A showman.
00:57:07You're a showman.
00:57:08You're a great artist.
00:57:09A showman.
00:57:10I was just around.
00:57:11And where was he?
00:57:12Just hanging around Nickelodeon.
00:57:13Ed was like
00:57:14a small little part.
00:57:15But I knew some people
00:57:16over at Nickelodeon
00:57:17who kind of brought me in.
00:57:18So it's like,
00:57:19was he living off royalties
00:57:20to just,
00:57:21all right,
00:57:22every once in a while
00:57:23I'll show up on a Nick show.
00:57:24We had a lot of fun
00:57:25shooting that.
00:57:26And the Drake and Josh thing
00:57:27was a little bit more,
00:57:28a little bit more
00:57:29time intensive.
00:57:30But those guys are great.
00:57:31I mean,
00:57:32that was a fun set to work on.
00:57:33So right at the end
00:57:34of his career
00:57:35with Nickelodeon,
00:57:36he was just kind of
00:57:37showing up on other shows
00:57:38just doing little cameo roles.
00:57:39Those guys are both
00:57:40really talented guys.
00:57:41And they're both really funny.
00:57:42Yeah.
00:57:43That's kind of,
00:57:44he was just like
00:57:45a utility player
00:57:46maybe doing spot shows.
00:57:47A lot of people
00:57:48talk to me about
00:57:49the Drake and Josh.
00:57:50You know,
00:57:51that's kind of
00:57:52what makes you wonder.
00:57:53He's too young
00:57:54to disappear and do spot shows.
00:57:55This is like a position
00:57:56of 40 year old
00:57:57or 50 year old
00:57:58or like guy who had
00:57:59like a 200 episode
00:58:00huge sitcom does.
00:58:01Yeah.
00:58:02Yeah.
00:58:03Yeah.
00:58:04Yeah.
00:58:05a lot of really great
00:58:06and really funny characters.
00:58:07Yup.
00:58:08Oh,
00:58:09that is so funny.
00:58:10Like,
00:58:11you know who does
00:58:12this type of thing?
00:58:13Have been
00:58:14like Michael J Fox
00:58:15show-up on a sitcom
00:58:16for like an episode or two
00:58:17in pinch hit.
00:58:18Oh,
00:58:19and a moment though.
00:58:20Because he has money
00:58:21to not do this.
00:58:22I love you, man.
00:58:24We just came
00:58:25to wish you good luck
00:58:26on your show
00:58:27tonight sweety.
00:58:28Yeah,
00:58:29break a leg.
00:58:30Thanks.
00:58:31You have a
00:58:32I just finished
00:58:33a good show
00:58:34Aww.
00:58:35Ah!
00:58:36Thank you!
00:58:37They're like, hey, we got to bring in Kenan and Josh
00:58:40to co-sign her new show.
00:58:41The thing you're wondering is, you know, he's not a retiree,
00:58:46and he's clearly able to host things or be part of a sitcom.
00:58:51So why are there more and more clips of Nickelodeon
00:58:54giving him half a chance, half of a show,
00:58:57one-time hosting gigs?
00:59:00Right.
00:59:01It's time for Oh Yeah!
00:59:03Cartoons!
00:59:04Oh Yeah!
00:59:05Cartoons!
00:59:06From the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,
00:59:07here's your host, Josh Server!
00:59:09I don't remember this.
00:59:10I am Josh, and this is Oh Yeah!
00:59:12Cartoons.
00:59:13And you know,
00:59:14Oh Yeah!
00:59:15Cartoons, from what I researched,
00:59:16because honestly, it wasn't a big hit for them either,
00:59:19was like a collection of one-off cartoons
00:59:23put into like a package every week of like,
00:59:25oh, this artist made this abstract cartoon,
00:59:28and it's eight minutes long,
00:59:30and it's not a series or anything,
00:59:34but you might enjoy it.
00:59:35Yeah.
00:59:36And maybe down the road,
00:59:37it could become a cartoon series.
00:59:40I mean, I could see them picking Josh to host it.
00:59:42He has great slapstick, like,
00:59:45physical kind of humor.
00:59:47Bring us to...
00:59:48Even in these more current clips.
00:59:52See, Ariana Grande loves it.
00:59:53Dude, I don't even recognize him.
00:59:55That was him?
00:59:57Yeah, that was him.
00:59:59And he doesn't look that old.
01:00:01Is he kind of more now just playing adult roles
01:00:03for Nickelodeon?
01:00:05Because I always thought that could be kind of cool too.
01:00:07Like, I looked at the guy that played Crazy Steve
01:00:10and played, you know, Carly's older brother.
01:00:14I'm like, that seems like a pretty cool role,
01:00:16and he's funny in those shows.
01:00:18It is kind of that perfect role that,
01:00:20like, yeah, Jerry Traynor,
01:00:21he does that kind of thing.
01:00:22And then, all right,
01:00:23he might voice some things on a Nickelodeon cartoon
01:00:26and just stay in their infrastructure of,
01:00:30we got this project.
01:00:31You're a guy.
01:00:32We know what you can do.
01:00:33Go.
01:00:34Yep.
01:00:35So like I mentioned,
01:00:36he wanted to try to keep his relevancy
01:00:38by doing web series and web comedy,
01:00:41which is quite a drop-off
01:00:43for somebody who was getting a big studio
01:00:47to back his projects.
01:00:48You're telling me that almost nobody
01:00:50wants to take a shot at him?
01:00:52Yeah, that's the part that doesn't make sense to me.
01:00:54It's like, he has like a what?
01:00:56A six, seven, eight year track record
01:01:00of doing extremely well on a big hit show,
01:01:04but yet no studio anywhere
01:01:06wants to give him a shot at his own show
01:01:09or a feature-length film.
01:01:12Like, why?
01:01:13I don't get it.
01:01:14Or even just being the sixth guy
01:01:16on like a sitcom somewhere.
01:01:17Like, all right,
01:01:18maybe he could depend on a Parks and Recreation
01:01:21as some eccentric character,
01:01:24as maybe like, you know,
01:01:25you have one or two scenes every show,
01:01:27and you're really funny in it,
01:01:28and then you're gone,
01:01:29and maybe it feels like a step down,
01:01:31but it's a consistent career.
01:01:33Yep.
01:01:34That's a bummer, dude.
01:01:35I don't get it.
01:01:37So like I said,
01:01:37his web series was called Laugh Out Loud,
01:01:40and it was early MySpace comedy.
01:01:43No.
01:01:44And I wanted to go back and find these episodes
01:01:46because I watched them when they first came out,
01:01:49but it's like they'd been erased from the internet.
01:01:51No.
01:01:53From my summary of what I remember
01:01:55was Josh plays basically himself
01:01:59in the last season of all that,
01:02:00but the show's called Laugh Out Loud.
01:02:03Yeah.
01:02:04And then he's basically confronted that,
01:02:07all right, you're off the show.
01:02:08We're transitioning to this young girl character
01:02:10who's in a Meredith Bynes parody.
01:02:12So he's pretty much taking the scenario
01:02:14that's happening to him in real life
01:02:16and making a web series about it.
01:02:17Yes.
01:02:18And then-
01:02:19That's kind of smart, right?
01:02:20Yep.
01:02:21And it goes in that same vein
01:02:22as like Curb Your Enthusiasm,
01:02:24where they blend reality
01:02:25with a fictionalized version of the character.
01:02:28So he's trying to figure out how do I make this transition,
01:02:31which is what the whole episode today is about.
01:02:33Wow.
01:02:34And he goes to seek out advice from fictional Kenan,
01:02:38who's still his pal and working on SNL
01:02:40and becoming a bigger star.
01:02:41No, fictional Kenan.
01:02:43And it's the real Kenan who's part of this web series.
01:02:46And then he also has Nick Cannon make a guest appearance.
01:02:50Wow.
01:02:51And I want to say there's like another cast member or two
01:02:53that show up somewhere in one of the six episodes.
01:02:56That's so cool.
01:02:58Is this, so is this kind of like the first,
01:03:00like I remember, didn't Drake Bell do something like this?
01:03:05Yes.
01:03:06A web series?
01:03:07He did.
01:03:08But obviously much after this.
01:03:10It was called Where's Walter,
01:03:11where he reunited a bunch of the cast
01:03:13and did inside jokes.
01:03:15And this, yeah, this is almost,
01:03:17this was way before it, before something like that.
01:03:20So it's like, Josh is trying again.
01:03:23So I don't, now I'm really confused
01:03:26because did he not want to be a celebrity
01:03:28or did he want to be a celebrity and stayed in
01:03:30and nobody wanted him?
01:03:31Yeah.
01:03:33You, Kenan and Kel need to join Kenan on SNL for one night.
01:03:36A lot of fans want it.
01:03:38From your lips to God's ears.
01:03:42You're probably saying to yourself,
01:03:44who the hell is this handsome man?
01:03:47He looks like he could be on the movies.
01:03:50So then in later years,
01:03:52he's done like sketch comedy with David Panarelli.
01:03:55Really?
01:03:57And they're just, you know,
01:03:59reminiscing on the golden years
01:04:02and having some fun together.
01:04:03There's nothing wrong with that.
01:04:04Exactly.
01:04:05So look at this, 2007 MySpace page.
01:04:08What's like?
01:04:09Wow.
01:04:10The intros and, oh, we got funny MySpace guys
01:04:13and there's a chicken suit man.
01:04:15And there's fake Amanda Bynes
01:04:17in part three of the episode.
01:04:20Oh, this was what it was like on all that
01:04:22behind the scenes for me.
01:04:25Man, I never knew about any of this.
01:04:28Maybe he should have followed more Jim Carrey.
01:04:31He should have figured out how to transition
01:04:34to being funny Jim Carrey to serious Jim Carrey.
01:04:37Yeah, he was still trying to act
01:04:40and, you know, making little attempts here and there
01:04:43that just didn't seem to go anywhere.
01:04:45Well, of course he was still trying to act.
01:04:47He's not just gonna hang it up completely, right?
01:04:49What about you, Josh?
01:04:50I mean, if he's been doing it for so long.
01:04:51I got out of the business for a while,
01:04:53but now I'm getting back in.
01:04:54I'm excited to do some acting again
01:04:56and, you know, make a comeback.
01:04:58My fans have always seen me do comedy
01:05:01and I love comedy.
01:05:03I love being funny and I do pretty good at it.
01:05:05He's not always just comedy.
01:05:06Now I'm getting back in.
01:05:07And so I'm working on some projects now.
01:05:10I can't really talk about it.
01:05:11I'm sorry.
01:05:12It's weird when these actors always have the,
01:05:13I'm working on a project and you never see the projects.
01:05:16I hope the fans will get to see me.
01:05:17Like they're being strung along.
01:05:18Yeah, and I can't talk about it.
01:05:20It's almost like they know nothing's gonna come of it.
01:05:22This is a serious film
01:05:23and I am literally playing two crazy roles.
01:05:27All right, maybe the parts he did got paid for and done,
01:05:31but nobody ever edited it or released it.
01:05:32Just recently kind of just getting back into it.
01:05:34But I have a new project
01:05:36that actually I can't really talk about yet
01:05:38that's getting picked up,
01:05:39which is like a behind the scenes thing,
01:05:41a pilot where I'm gonna be writing,
01:05:43potentially acting, directing.
01:05:44Oh my God.
01:05:46You see, this is why I'm always a believer
01:05:49in don't talk about it, be about it.
01:05:52Let people see it after you do it.
01:05:56I hate this.
01:05:57Oh, I got this project on the way
01:05:58that I can't really talk about.
01:06:00Nothing's for certain yet.
01:06:01Then don't talk about it, period.
01:06:03Just don't.
01:06:04You know what I mean?
01:06:05Because he's already cool on the panels.
01:06:08Like the guy, it's like, that's my dude.
01:06:10Oh, I have this thing.
01:06:11You may not say, that doesn't sound very cool.
01:06:13Yeah, you're almost like setting yourself up for failure.
01:06:17It's like, don't do that.
01:06:19Yeah, because you look important
01:06:21because everyone's like, oh my God,
01:06:22that's the guy I used to watch.
01:06:24He's the coolest.
01:06:25Oh, he's struggling pretty hard.
01:06:27Yeah.
01:06:28And it kills the kayfabe of them being this guy.
01:06:32Like, I bet you started today's episode thinking,
01:06:34wow, massive kid star.
01:06:35And after seeing this, you're kind of like,
01:06:38oh, he's just sort of like me, isn't he?
01:06:41Yeah, I mean, he had a lot of success.
01:06:44I would say as a child actor, a lot of success.
01:06:48Again, that's something that I always wanted to be,
01:06:50even to this day.
01:06:53But I mean, you have to think a lot more
01:06:56probably don't transition and have the kind of success
01:07:00comparatively to the, you know what I mean?
01:07:02Like it's very few and far between
01:07:05for those who can take this and then skyrocket
01:07:08and then have the same or bigger success as an adult.
01:07:11Like that's just super, super rare.
01:07:14But I think you answered a lot of the questions
01:07:17that I had today, which was...
01:07:21Actually, you didn't answer anything today
01:07:23because I still do not understand
01:07:25why he didn't get a shot at anything.
01:07:27So please tell me there's some sort of happy ending
01:07:29to this story, please.
01:07:31Oh, of course there is.
01:07:33We're all about happy endings here on Pop Culture Paradise.
01:07:37Josh Server, Kenan and Kel,
01:07:39they all kind of realized that we all
01:07:42have this nostalgia for all that.
01:07:44Yeah.
01:07:45And like everything lately,
01:07:47they cashed in and all that came back.
01:07:50So you gotta have the OGs run it.
01:07:53You need it, yep.
01:07:54It's almost like everywhere
01:07:56has just run out of original ideas.
01:07:59And it's like, well, it's been long enough.
01:08:02Let's just reboot this thing and people will watch it.
01:08:05They're not wrong though,
01:08:06because it's like, hey, all that's coming back
01:08:09and we're gonna do some of your old favorite sketches
01:08:11just with these new kids.
01:08:13Well, I don't care about the new kids, but all right.
01:08:16Yeah.
01:08:17There's only one new kids I care about.
01:08:19Maybe one day we can talk about the reboot done wrong,
01:08:22which was the new Saved by the Bell.
01:08:24Oh God, the new Saved by the Bell sucks.
01:08:26But I'm not gonna get you started on that right now.
01:08:28God, it sucks.
01:08:29It sucks so bad.
01:08:31Yeah, there are some complete winners for reboots
01:08:35and some total fricking losers.
01:08:37Loser.
01:08:40Nice Josh Surfer impression.
01:08:42I was going for a Jim Carrey.
01:08:44It's a high school reunion for kids
01:08:46who didn't get to go to high school.
01:08:48It's all just huge right now.
01:08:49Nice.
01:08:50Couple moments of joy and then you feel alone.
01:08:53Everything okay, guys?
01:08:54Josh Surfer?
01:08:57Oh, there he is.
01:08:58Legend.
01:09:00How they treat the legends.
01:09:01Yeah, no, it was a pretty big deal,
01:09:03meaning that it was pretty big for kids in the 90s.
01:09:06You're a little too young for it.
01:09:08Oh God.
01:09:10That resurgence of the 90s and all the 90s kids,
01:09:12I think that would be considered like-
01:09:14Yeah, you're definitely ahead of me.
01:09:16Look who it is.
01:09:17Seriously?
01:09:18I'm freaking out.
01:09:19I love the big year of corn.
01:09:21It's the big corn thing again.
01:09:22I'm also here.
01:09:24One of the original cast members of all that.
01:09:26Now we don't know you.
01:09:27Yeah, Kenan.
01:09:28Josh Surfer.
01:09:28Show some respect.
01:09:30Respect, Dan.
01:09:32My brothers.
01:09:33This is crazy.
01:09:35We haven't all been in a room together in like, what?
01:09:3720 years?
01:09:39Wow.
01:09:39I'm so grateful.
01:09:40I think we all are.
01:09:41They look good though, right?
01:09:42We talked about 20 years later.
01:09:43Honestly, yeah.
01:09:44You really don't realize-
01:09:44It's kind of like the Full House reboot
01:09:46where it's like, all right,
01:09:48I'd rather see more Stephanie DJing and everything
01:09:50because they're older,
01:09:52but they're not like the age where I wouldn't expect them
01:09:55to be in their own sitcom anyway.
01:09:56I'll be proud of you either way.
01:09:58Thanks for always believing in us, Coach Clampett.
01:10:00Hey, my pleasure, bud.
01:10:02Either way.
01:10:03That is a powerful thing.
01:10:03Like, he's Nickelodeon.
01:10:04That's how old it is.
01:10:05Not like sitcom old.
01:10:07Very powerful.
01:10:08I love how he gets in his face.
01:10:09My pleasure, bud.
01:10:10You know, thank you for bringing such hard work
01:10:12into the show.
01:10:13So we love you.
01:10:14It's so crazy to think.
01:10:15It's like, oh, this is the old cast.
01:10:17But when they come back to do the show,
01:10:19they're still in their thirties.
01:10:21Yeah, and now you get something that it's like,
01:10:25oh, we're going to go back and visit Detective Dan.
01:10:27Oh yeah, Detective Dan, that's the Columbo parody.
01:10:30And you know, he was playing an old man or an older man.
01:10:34Well, now he's basically the age of the older man,
01:10:36but it's still the same character.
01:10:38And now he has a family?
01:10:41Yeah, a family.
01:10:43You didn't realize that Detective Dan procreated?
01:10:46No.
01:10:48Did you want to know that?
01:10:49No.
01:10:50I'm Detective Dan.
01:10:52Oh boy, what the, no, no, no, no, no.
01:10:56I mean, he was already showing up in his underwear
01:10:58in some of the scenes we were watching earlier.
01:11:00Yep.
01:11:01God, that wedding night.
01:11:04Well, Detective Dan has a daughter, Detective Anne.
01:11:07I had a feeling it was Detective Anne.
01:11:11I wondered if he dated and married a Detective Jan or Pam.
01:11:16I'm Detective Dan.
01:11:20That voice still crushes it.
01:11:23Detective Dan, what's your name, now, mate?
01:11:25Oh no, that's even higher and squeakier.
01:11:28Well, isn't that convenient, little Miss Boite Pants?
01:11:31And where were you when the money was stolen?
01:11:35Isn't that convenient?
01:11:36Or another hanky, or another hanky, or another hanky.
01:11:40It's like the tiling's still there.
01:11:42Oh, it is.
01:11:43Even with this gag right here,
01:11:44he's pulling out the long handkerchief.
01:11:46There's something hidden under this decorative paper
01:11:48and fancy bows.
01:11:50Well, there's something on it.
01:11:51He's like a good player coach.
01:11:54Oh, what do you say we get out of here?
01:11:57Out of where?
01:11:57Yeah, let's just open all their gifts.
01:12:00Honey, I can't understand you with that accent.
01:12:02You must have gotten that from your mother.
01:12:04Uh, come on, pops, let's go.
01:12:05Yeah, what are you saying?
01:12:08Get that from your mother.
01:12:10That was great stuff, man.
01:12:11That was the story of Josh Server,
01:12:13the forgotten cast member from all that.
01:12:18Honestly, you kind of, you still look at it.
01:12:21I don't know if we solved this mystery.
01:12:23You're right.
01:12:24No, I think there's only one man that can solve this case.
01:12:29And he's Detective Dan.
01:12:32Absolutely.
01:12:34Yeah, man, definitely a trip down memory lane.
01:12:38I learned a lot of things that I had no idea about.
01:12:41I still can't figure out why he didn't really have that,
01:12:47you know, that secondary career
01:12:49after the Nickelodeon stuff.
01:12:52I'm happy that he got the second go around with the reboot
01:12:55because as we saw in that last clip,
01:12:57the timing is still there.
01:12:58Everything, he's just, he's still funny.
01:13:00You know?
01:13:01You still got it.
01:13:02You still got it.
01:13:03You still got it.
01:13:04Exactly, yeah.
01:13:05But unless we can talk to him
01:13:08and really, you know, ask the questions
01:13:11and try to get the answers from his mouth,
01:13:12I don't think we'll ever really know
01:13:15why he didn't transition into becoming
01:13:18a bigger star as an adult
01:13:20because all the tools were there, if you ask me.
01:13:23Five tool prospects.
01:13:25He had the physical comedy.
01:13:26He had the delivery.
01:13:27He could do the sitcom.
01:13:29He could host.
01:13:30He could entertain.
01:13:33And he was a handsome dude.
01:13:34Like, you know, he was, he had charisma.
01:13:37He like, yeah, I thought he was good.
01:13:41That's somebody who should have been
01:13:42on one of those WB sitcoms like Amanda Bynes was.
01:13:45Like, you're telling me there wasn't like a,
01:13:47what I like about you or something else offered to him?
01:13:50He could have totally been on the OC.
01:13:53Yeah, he could have.
01:13:54He's not that far off.
01:13:55Yeah, like one of those.
01:13:57When you watch those 2001, 2002 clips of him
01:14:00with his overly gelled up hair
01:14:02and the shades and everything,
01:14:03like he could have played like a good kind of scummy kid
01:14:06or he could have played the nerd.
01:14:07He's kind of, he was kind of all characters
01:14:10just depending on what wardrobe he wore.
01:14:12Yeah.
01:14:13Or he could have been on like,
01:14:15have you ever seen Kenan and Kel on,
01:14:17what is it like Steve Harvey or Cedric the Entertainer?
01:14:20That show.
01:14:21Yeah.
01:14:22I think Lori Betts is also on that.
01:14:24Like how was he not invited on?
01:14:26Yeah, man.
01:14:27I don't know.
01:14:28We're going to have to,
01:14:29hopefully this episode can reach him
01:14:31and we can try to get these answers from him himself.
01:14:34Well, that is our promise here.
01:14:36Pop culture paradise.
01:14:39We are going to find out.
01:14:40We're going to send this to Josh
01:14:41and hopefully Josh gives us answers
01:14:44and just doesn't ignore us.
01:14:46What do they do if they like this episode
01:14:47and want to hear us talk more
01:14:49about maybe people who disappeared?
01:14:50Maybe things that, I don't know.
01:14:52You're just still wondering even about to this day.
01:14:56Please like, comment and subscribe all three
01:14:59if you're feeling up to it.
01:15:00For Joe, I'm Jeff and we'll catch you next week
01:15:03right here on pop culture paradise.
01:15:05Peace.
01:15:06All right guys, that's all the show we have for you.
